Healthy Communities Start at Home

The Columbia Valley Rockies are off to a strong start winning their home opener 3-2 against the Osoyoos Coyotes last Friday. The Rockies next two home games are on the next two Fridays. This Friday, September 20 they are hosting the Creston Thunder Cats at 7:30 pm at the Eddie Mountain Arena. Creston is one of our divisional rivals. Next Friday, the 27th, we host the Fernie Ghostriders, another strong team in our division. Come on out and support these guys. There is lots of fun for the fans. Just ask Dave Gaspar who won the 50/50, plus a second period score prize and some golf at Greywolf. He had a great night. Most of the fans did (maybe not the Osoyoos fans as much haha). I hope to see you all out supporting the Rockies. They played exciting, fast hockey the last game.

They say that the best gift you can give someone is your time. I don’t know who they are but they are right. At least in my world. I have become a bit of a whiner lately as I have had such high expectations of the people I know in this valley. When I think of all the time I have spent with lonely, sick or elderly people, especially when Watson is in tow, I am reminded of how easy it is to just stop in and see someone. Last week we stopped in Ivy House and Columbia House so Watson could say ‘Hi’ to the residents. It was an amazing experience and I had tears in my eyes a couple times as I watched the hound interacting with the folks in the facilities. Lately I have been writing a bit about my own depression. I am stuck on the dialysis machine for ¼ of my waking hours and it is very lonely and that brings on the depression. Knowing that my days are numbered due to cancer and spending half of them hooked up to dialysis, isolated from the real world, really sucks. In six months of this I can list my visitors on my hands. Every one has walked away saying it was an amazing experience learning what dialysis actually is while playing crib or chess or whatever. There are many lonely people like me out there that are craving a visit from you. What are you doing about that? What are you giving back to this world?

Two Jobs My neighbourhood barber was just arrested for selling drugs. I have been his client for 2 years and had no idea he was a barber.

Many of us are very caught up in our work life and will do this at the expense of our family life. We forget that work is neverending and will always be there, but our friends and family may not. If you fail in life, neither your boss or your clients will help you, but your family will. Work is important but so is entertainment, socializing, exercise and relaxation. Without relationships life can be quite meaningless. So prioritize living your life for enjoyment, love and relationships. Do not let your work overpower everything else in your world.

Watson’s Waddle You humans should be a lot more like us dogs. I mean, most dogs are like, twice as happy as they should be. We open our eyes first thing in the morning to give you that big grin that says, “I love you, man. Really, I mean it. You are the greatest thing in my life”. You try to ignore us but all you get is, “Seriously, I love you. Now get out of bed so I can go take a leak”. Then I do a series of stretches before too much moving around. You should try that. I begin my day with some exercise and finish with a little stroll before retiring. Nice. I love to just be silly a few times a day, sliding on my back, rolling around or running after nothing. Try it, you will like it. And the excitement I show when you get home. If you wiggled your butt and made excited noises every time a friend or family member came to the door, you would have a lot of visitors. I eat healthy and water is my number one beverage. Everyone should try that. So you see, dogs are happy but we keep things very simple. Lots of love, lots of fun. Humans should give it a try.

What Year Was It? ‘Rain Man’ won Best Picture, Windows 2.1 was released, the Iran-Iraq war ended, the Surgeon General stated that nicotine is as addictive as heroin and cocaine, Prozac was introduced and laser eye surgery became available. A new drug, ‘crack cocaine’ hit the streets, and the U.S. unveiled the Stealth Bomber. What year was it? See page 10.

Camping Season For many folks, camping season is pretty much done. It is a sad thought really. I love getting out to a beautiful lake for a few days of peace and quiet. Mental Health Well it has been a 14 day countdown since bloodwork to find out where my multiple myeloma is at. I meet with my cancer specialist in Cranbrook this week, Wednesday, September 18. This is also my one-year anniversary since completing chemotherapy. Definitely a big week for me. Multiple myeloma is a tricky adventure. There are not a lot of clear symptoms but every pain in the body could be a sign. And I am at the age that I have lots of little aches and pains. My shoulder has been sore for a few days. Is it from stacking firewood or is it from bone marrow cancer? That is a constant thought process for me. I have had a couple of visitors during dialysis lately, including some chess. What a difference that makes in my life. Sitting on the dialysis machine for a few hours at a time is very lonely and depressing. Very lonely. Thanks so much to the folks who have come by during sessions to help break up the time for me. Meeting with a counselor has given me a chance to figure out some of my part in all this. We are all on quite the journey.

As I look at myself I realize that I am a very selfish person. Five years ago I had no idea what was involved in kidney failure and dialysis. And I did not care to know any more about it. I knew a couple folks on dialysis but that was really just a medical word to me. So here I am on dialysis and wishing that more people understood what that actually means to me as a patient. No one really gets it. Very few of our medical personnel have ever even seen hemodialysis. The same with our first responders and paramedics. Or you, my reader. It is just something I write about. Which reminds me of the reality that everyone has problems that are very personal and no one else understands how they are affected by them. I want you all to see and understand dialysis but there are so many other things to see and understand. Dialysis is only important to me. I wish we could all be there for each other when it is needed. There are so many issues that could be lightened by love, kindness and caring.

My Progress

ROCKIES HOCKEY CRESTON THUNDER CATS FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 20

My health seems pretty stable these days. Just trying to keep gaining strength. It is sad when I try to move firewood or swing a golf club. The differences in my body become very apparent. Basically my progress there is learning to accept my limitations and teaching them to my friends. As for progress on my bus, I have yet to hear from many folks willing to step up and help. I was hoping there might be at least one community-oriented electrician, plumber, renovations person, etc that would step up to that plate. I guess everyone is pretty busy with life. But I have found a bus and talked to the health authorities about what is needed to put this together. Imagine a mobile dialysis unit that changes the lives of hundreds of patients.

There are many opportunities in this valley and another reason I love living here. You just need to read the paper to find something that works for you. Maybe you are pursuing a career in the Health Related Fields. Did you know that the Invermere Health Care Auxiliary Society (who own the Invermere Thrift Store) is giving Scholarships for College/University Students? It was That Year (From page 4) In 1988, a new home cost $92,000, a new car was $10,500 and average annual income was $24,500. Ben Johnson won the gold in Seoul but was stripped of it for steroid use, the Hubble Space Telescope was put into operation and the Winter Olympics were held in Calgary.

Pancake Breakfast This Saturday, September 21, the Radium Fire Department is hosting a pancake breakfast for everyone, whether or not you attend the car show. It is happening at the new Radium Centre from 7:30 am to 10:30 am. It will be a great way to start the day.

Fall Equinox The Sun will be centered exactly over the Equator on Sunday, September 22. That is the day the Northern and Southern Hemispheres share the same amount of sunlight, known as the ‘Equinox’. On that day, the Sun will rise exactly due East and set exactly due West so it is a good day to orient yourself at your house or wherever. Our daylight each day shall get shorter and shorter and the Sun will cross the sky further and further south until December 21. It is pretty much officially autumn.

My Toaster

Mountain Hub is offering up a ‘Small Business Booster Course’ to help you make your business grow. It begins on October 8. Check www.mountainhub.ca/academy to learn more.

I love toast and eat some of it every second day or so. Bread is not the healthiest thing for most people but in moderation it is okay. For me, it is something that is low enough in potassium and phosphorous that it is okay with my kidney situation. Anyways, I don’t understand my toaster. I like my toast on the dark side so the dial is maxed out. Yet sometimes the toast is barely warm and tanned. Then another time, same loaf of bread, it toasts to a deliciously dark tone. I don’t know if it is a form of OCD but I find that inconsistency quite disturbing.

Day of Peace Saturday September 21 is the International Day of Peace, dedicated to world peace, and specifically the absence of war or violence. We’re pretty lucky to live in this beautiful valley, in a relatively peaceful country. Sure, life’s not all unicorns and lollipops, but we’re luckier than many other people in the world. Let’s appreciate how good we have it, and do what we can to help those who aren’t as blessed.

Where Watson Was The photo on page 6 shows Watson out for a walk with Kootenay Kritters. They are down by Pynelogs Cultural Centre and Dorothy Lake.

Party Rentals Are you having a party? Large or small, M7 Party Rentals has everything you need to be a host. Dishes, linen, chairs, tables, centerpieces, lighting, a dance floor, huge tents, a bouncy castle and more. They can help you out. Give them a call at 250-347-9238.

Cozy Comfort Well it seems that the cooler season is upon us. For me that sucks as I am always a bit cold from my kidney and blood issues. I have started burning wood already. It keeps the furnace from kicking in as often. Propane and electricity are expensive. Wood heat is fantastic and Diamond Heating & Spas is your wood stove go-to place. They carry lots of models including the most efficient ones out there. Stop in at their showroom across from Dairy Queen and take a look.

Halt Production Apparently they are not going to be making yardsticks any longer.

Concrete Work Guy is the man. If you need concrete work done in the valley, talk to Guy Concrete at 250-341-5115. He does forming, finishing, grinding, polishing, repairs and demolition. He can work with new and existing concrete. He makes it look good. Give Guy a call.

A Bit Interesting The Zodiac sign that begins on the equinox is Libra, which has the symbol of scales. Some folks say that the balanced scales are representative of the balance of daylight and darkness on the equinox.
