Michael Charles Monday
We are constantly inundated with advertising convincing us to buy new things. Today’s society is all about spending money and upgrading. But there are always other options. There is a new program in town. The Columbia Valley Makerspace Society is a group that wants to help people learn to repair their broken items rather than discarding and purchasing new. We all have favourite items that are broken and wish that we could afford to have repaired. As it turns out, sometimes it is a very simple fix that we are capable of doing ourselves. This Saturday, September 23, bring your broken item to the Invermere Legion between 1 pm and 6 pm and they will help you take a look at it and fix it. This is a free event and includes free coffee and treats.
This coming Monday, September 25, get to the Horsethief Creek Pub to catch ‘Michael Charles’ live. Michael Charles is a Chicago blues legend and is a member of the Blues Hall of Fame. He is touring for the tenth straight year and will visit the corners of Canada, USA and Australia. This is an incredible opportunity to see a world-class musician here in the valley. It will be a fantastic ‘Live Music Monday’ that you should not miss.
Have you heard about those new corduroy pillows? They are really making headlines.

Meanwhile the Rockies are trying to find their groove, taking only a single point on the weekend road trip with a 3-3 tie in Nelson. Get down to the Eddie Mountain Memorial Arena and support the Rockies. It is a fun evening with some chances to win great prizes in the stands, including Timbits, pizza and more. Last week brought 350 fans to the arena and the 50/50 draw was $400. It makes for an exciting time with so many folks cheering on the team. Be part of it all.

Robservations I am not really sure that I understand the purpose of government anymore. I had always thought (hoped really) that it was all about figuring out what is best for the citizens and developing programs based on that. But it turns out that I was very wrong. It seems that it is all about taking away the money of the citizens and randomly spending it on whatever they like. Huge salaries and pay raises, huge pensions, huge expense accounts and more. The average Canadian citizen is living week to week, dollar to dollar and they just get hit by more and more taxes while the overall cost of living skyrockets. The education system is failing, the health system is failing, insurance is brutal, electricity is brutal, gas prices are brutal and income taxes are brutal. Opposition parties are always a total joke. They just oppose everything from the government, whether it is a good policy for the people (which very few are) or not. Overall, we the people of this province and country are really getting screwed by our rich, entitled government officials and their friends. Just work your butt off and pay your money to the government. Can’t afford new tires or a decent vehicle? Too bad, you have to pay the government first. I am not sure how or when, but at some point, all of this has to change. Citizens are not meant to be slaves of the government.

September 21-27, 2017 Watson’s Waddle You humans should be a lot more like us dogs. I mean, most dogs are like, twice as happy as they should be. We open our eyes first thing in the morning to give you that big grin that says, “I love you, man. Really, I mean it. You are the greatest thing in my life”. You try to ignore us but all you get is, “Seriously, I love you. Now get out of bed so I can go take a leak”. Then I do a series of stretches before too much moving around. You should try that. I begin my day with some exercise and finish with a little stroll before retiring. It is nice. I love to just be silly a few times a day, sliding on my back, rolling around or running after nothing. Try it, you will like it. And the excitement I show when you get home. If you wiggled your butt and made excited noises every time a friend or family came to the door, you would have a lot of visitors. I eat healthy and water is my number one beverage. Everyone should try that. So you see, dogs are happy but we keep things very simple. Lots of love, lots of fun. Humans should give it a try.
Time Change I just realized that a one-hour walk for me is like a seven-hour walk for the dog.
What Year Was It? Lance Armstrong won his sixth Tour de France, Martha Stewart went to prison, a tsunami in South Asia killed 290,000 people, a NASA jet (the Scramjet) reached a speed of mach 9.6 and Taipei 101 opened as the tallest skyscraper in the World. Oil companies registered the highest profits in history, Ken Jennings dominated Jeopardy for $2.5 million and Facebook was launched. What year was it? See page 9.

Poutine Palooza Where in this valley do you find the best poutine? There are a lot of food establishments to choose from and they all can put together some pretty tasty products. What is poutine? Poutine is taste bud heaven. Standard poutine is French fries smothered in cheese curds and gravy. The gravy melts the cheese and it is a gooey, delicious mess. Restaurants are invited to ‘invent’ their own versions with special toppings and get involved in Poutine Palooza. We get to sample as many as we wish and to vote on our favourites. There will be a final Poutine Palooza Party on Saturday, October 21.

Fall Equinox The Sun will be centered exactly over the Equator on Friday, September 22, at 2:02 pm our time. That is the day the Northern and Southern Hemispheres share the same amount of sunlight, known as the ‘Equinox’. On that day, the Sun will rise exactly due East and set exactly due West so it is a good day to orient yourself at your house or wherever. Our daylight each day shall get shorter and shorter and the Sun will cross the sky further and further south until December 21. It is pretty much officially autumn.

September 21-27, 2017
It has been a crazy hot and dry summer. One of the driest ever. We need some rain. All these windy days are not helping much. As I write this, the backcountry has been opened up but there are still lots of restrictions in place. Including a fire ban. It is tough as it is hunting season and it is very chilly overnight. Things are still very dry in the soil. Fire danger is still very high. Hopefully we will see enough precipitation soon to get things opened right up so the hunters and wood cutters can have their days.
WRITING SERVICE Always wanted to write your memoir but don’t have a clue where to start? Have an idea but can’t type? Don’t do computers? Need a eulogy, toast to the bride or similar? Would really just prefer to give someone else the info and let them do it? Find the whole idea stressful and detrimental to your health? Help is available at your home or over the phone. New Job I was just hired to help a one-armed typist do capital letters. It is a lot of shift work.
Vanity Apparently I have a lot of issues with vanity. It has been an incredible few weeks of compliments and comments about The Valley Peak. I have a lot of readers and so many of them are full of appreciation. I am very grateful for all the positive feedback. But I also get disappointed when I meet a non-reader. I met a gentleman the other day who was a long-term resident and had never heard of The Valley Peak. I went through feelings of judgment and disappointment. It was bad. I learned that I have to get over myself. I have a long ways to go to learn to appreciate everyone for exactly who they are.

Christmas Parties We are well into September. Time really flies. This summer was a quick one with all the wildfire activity and high temperatures in the province. But winter is coming and that brings Christmas. Are you planning a party for Christmas this year? Check out Bighorn Meadows for the perfect space in Radium. Give them a call at 250-347-2323.
Camping Season For many folks, camping season is pretty much done. It is a sad thought really. I love getting out to a beautiful lake for a few days of peace and quiet. Make sure that you winterize your RV. You don’t want the pipes freezing. ‘Cresteel RV Service’ can winterize your RV for you. 250 -342-6312.

An Apple A Day Remember that apples are good for you. They may not ‘keep the doctor away’ but they do provide great taste and nutrition. Apples contain enzymes that stimulate brain activity even more so than caffeine. An apple in the morning will have you ‘thinking straight’ in no time. Make eating an apple, or any piece of fruit, really, part of your daily lifestyle. This is the time of year when apples and pears are in abundance. As it turns out, I really love pears when they are that perfect ripeness. Tender and sweet, but not mushy. Harvest season is fantastic.

Cooled Quickly Well these have been some crazy temperature changes. It seems like yesterday that it was 35 degrees out there. Now we are hitting zero overnight with highs in the mid teens. It is pretty chilly in the mornings. This is my first year renting this house which has a wood stove for heat. I am looking forward to not paying huge bills to

B.C. Hydro. But I am a bit stressed about firewood. It’s going to take a bit to keep this place warm if it is a harsh winter. I do love the comfort of wood heat though. A fireplace is so cozy.
Do you want to know what is remarkable? A dry-erase board. I am doing my usual Monday scramble to get things done. Every Monday requires a lot of time on the computer trying to get a lot of writing done. I need nearly 10 pages of a word document to fill The Valley Peak. After about 6 pages (where I am at now), I find myself checking to see how much more I need to come up with. And nodding off lots (I hate waking up in my desk chair). It is tricky being responsible for my own stuff. Thanks for taking time to read The Valley Peak.
