In the 70s, a Grey Cup final was called the ‘Staple Bowl’. Why was that? (Answer on page 5) September 24-30, 2020 Oktoberfest This year’s Oktoberfest is happening this Saturday, September 26, from 11 am to 5 pm in a mix of venues. There will be a farmers and artisans market happening in the parking lot behind the arena and the beer gardens and barbecue will be at the Invermere Legion. Beginning at 2 pm, the music will go on the road, starting from the Legion and will visit neighbouhoods in the community. There will be live bands (L8 & European Touch) travelling around until 5 pm. It should be great. A huge thanks to the Invermere Legion, the District of Invermere and Home Hardware for hosting this event.

Outdoor Pantry Near my house is an outdoor food pantry containing a few food essentials. It is set up for use by the public based on a program in Cranbrook and Kimberley. They have 14 locations there and also have started in the Trail/ Fruitvale area. The idea is for the community members who are able to make sure it has food in it for those that are in need. It is like a 24community food bank. It is pretty new to the area so it will take a while for people to get used to it. The pantry is located near Laird school, at 1313 10 St. Check it out if you’re in the area and please help any way that you can.

It will be held in the main ice area as the season is beginning a bit later this year and the ice will not be in yet. The executive has been working hard to make sure curling can proceed in a safe manner so there will be some covid-related changes. I am sure everything will be fine and the season should be lots of fun.

Robservations We are approaching Thanksgiving, a time of giving thanks. For me, some gratitude every day is a better way to go. I have received and continue to receive a lot of support through my cancer and kidney failure. Without that support I would not likely be here I would definitely not be in Invermere where there is no actual support for dialysis patients through the health system (other than bloodwork-our lab treats me well). I am lucky to not be in Cranbrook or Trail for treatments. I am one of only 4 people in all of the Kootenays doing this at home and I am the only one living alone. It is pretty important to have someone check on my well-being during dialysis sessions. So I thank all those folks, including my new card partner/opponent. I also get some help with The Valley Peak with deliveries and a bit of writing. A shout out to my summer student helpers, Kayla and Ben for taking care of downtown deliveries all summer. There is also Sue, Charlie and Jen helping with that every week. And Dorothy proofing. Thanks also to the folks delivering food, sometimes meals and other times fresh produce and to those supporting my efforts to mobilize dialysis. Life is so much easier and more meaningful when we are helping and being helped by others. Being aware and grateful for the help we receive is important.
Tough Times It is hard to describe the feeling of sitting alone for 4 hours, watching your blood leave your body, go through a machine, and then return into your chest. It is an intense moment when things are starting up and you see the first bit of blood flowing out the arterial line. My head is constantly considering all the things that can go wrong. Really, infection is the most common issue so just making sure I am using good sterile technique is important. Other than that, it is all about not panicking for a few hours.

There may be some short interruptions in the water service and temporary discoloration of water as a result of the sediment and organic materials that are being flushed from the water mains. During this period, disinfection by chlorination will be continued. To assist the Public Works Department during the flushing operation, users are advised that if they are experiencing persistent discoloration or odour problems with the water, to immediately notify the Municipal Office and explain the nature of the problem. block, a bit crowded was kind of fun. Everyone wanted to tell me I was handsome and give me a bit of a rub. Children enjoy rubbing my back and everyone thinks my huge ears are cute. I meet lots of strangers. But now, we see a lot less activity during our walks. Rob and I bump into a lot less people and dogs and they are almost always familiar. It is the beginning of local season in the valley. I love the familiarity of everyone. This is a very friendly valley. I am unsure about the quietness but really do love the peacefulness. I am also glad about the cooler weather. It is much easier for Rob to take me places, both in the vehicle and walking. I am full of energy when I am not overheating. I hope everyone has a wonderful autumn season.
What Year Was It? The Beatles, then known as ‘The Quarrymen’ had their first recording session, Elvis was inducted to the army, John Diefenbaker became Prime Minister, the Avro Arrow had its debut flight and the first U.S. passenger jet flights began with a Boeing 707. The Hula Hoop, the TV remote control and the microchip were invented, the Great Chinese Famine began (30 million died), NASA was formed, Sir Edmund Hillary reached the South Pole and 14 year-old Bobbie Fischer became the U.S. chess champion. What year was it? See page 7.

So I was able to try my dialysis machine on the old school bus sitting in the driveway. I stayed hooked up to the house power source as I just wanted to see how the machine worked with the different system. In house I need 60 litres of water but that is not available in the bus so I hang a bunch of 5-litre bags of dialysate fluids. It all worked pretty well so the next move is to try it with a generator. For that I will have to have someone along with me making sure nothing shuts down. The whole process requires about 5 hours of smooth power delivery. It is hard to describe the excitement of the thought of actually going out camping again. Before dialysis I was a very regular camper indeed. Just a couple more barriers to overcome and I will get out this fall. During the 1977 Grey Cup game, the field froze over so the Montreal Allouettes put staples in their cleats, hence the name ‘the Staple Bowl’.
Keep It Close With all the new quarantine restrictions… I will only be telling inside jokes.
Waste Management A truck dropped off a pretty fancy garbage bin in front of my house this afternoon. They were dropping them off at all the homes on my street. The gentleman said they were actually microchipped for each address. Invermere is getting involved in a more extensive recycling program. I have not looked at it yet as most of my garbage is medical waste that I take to the bins myself. I shall learn more for next week.

Social Media Talk Facebook is updating its terms and policies to protect its community standard. What will that bring to its users? Facebook Groups: For admins who would repeatedly approve post that violates code of conduct, the group will get removed by Facebook. For personal accounts, keep it real and clean, use your real name and delete any fake accounts. Watch what you are posting as Facebook will remove all posts that are violating their standard. This could include posts about racism, hatred, posts that are not supported by facts and much more. Overall, it is best if you read the new updates and make sure you obey all rules if you do not want to get removed.

Big Week This is an important week in my little world. I will be meeting with the cancer specialist on Thursday to find out where all of that is at. If my bloodwork is still strong, that will be 3 years of having my cancer ‘under control’. They have told me that 3 years is the minimum to qualify for a donated kidney transplant. That means only one more year before I am begging all of you for a kidney. Most of you do have an extra one and there are many folks who could use one. Anyway, I am hoping for a good report and really hoping to maintain my current health.

Beautiful Cars
(From page 4) In 1958, a house cost $12,750 and the average income was $4,600. The Peace Symbol was designed, Jamie Lee Curtis was born, the SS Edmund Fitzgerald was launched, the first Toyota and Datsun vehicles were sold in the U.S. and Visa and American Express were introduced.
There was no official car show this year but many classic car drivers showed up anyways and spent the weekend touring around the valley. Thanks to those folks as we all got to see some very nice vehicles around. Hopefully things get back to where they should be next year.
Firewood Season
Monday morning was beautiful. Watson and I did our usual pre-dialysis walk and the sky was smoke-free. Mount Nelson looked so wonderful with the golden sun hitting it. We met another walker and her puppy and they were just as cheerful as we were. Thank you for that Lord.
It is definitely time to make sure you are stocked up with firewood for the winter. We are pretty lucky to live in an area that firewood can be sourced with varying degrees of difficulty. It has been tough on my end as I am not as strong as I used to be and I have very little endurance. Last year I had some amazing gifts of firewood that really made the difference. If any of you are out there gathering and have some extra, you are welcome to drop it off here. Cheers.
