Last week I went on a bit of a rant about our government and the money they take from us. It seems that a lot of folks are feeling the same way. A lot of folks are living day to day and dollar to dollar, hoping nothing goes wrong as they just can’t afford a health issue or a vehicle repair. Many are building up a debt load. Taxes are crushing them. Anyway, on a lighter note, it looks like we are in for a few days of great fall weather. It was awesome being out on the day of the fire ban being lifted. The ban came off at 1pm our time and by 1:15 pm I was coming across folks with a campfire and others gathering wood. Happy campers. I have to admit that I really prefer having a campfire while camping. But yes, now is the perfect time to get out hiking, biking, camping, gathering firewood, fishing, hunting or whatever takes you into the backcountry. We have a lot of beautiful areas around the valley so take the time to explore. I have been very lucky to get to tour some wonderful spots this summer. There are so many lakes and streams out there as well as magnificent vista views. Take advantage of it.

Happy anniversary. Sunday, October 1 brings the 2-year anniversary of me being picked up from the shelter in Creston and coming to my new home in Invermere. What a blessing that day has turned out to be. I was nervous as this was my fourth ‘family’. The first group chained me up outside for 7 years. It helped me develop a barking issue as I wanted attention from anyone or anything. The next family couldn’t handle the barking and the third family lost their jobs and had to move into a small apartment. So you can see why it took a little while to develop trust in Rob. As a dog, you never know what to expect. I hit the jackpot. I am loved intensely. I get lots of exercise (lost 12 pounds the first year). It is much easier to get around now that I am healthier. I am well-fed and I get some amazing massages, usually upon waking up in the morning. I get to go everywhere in the valley and out as a Fire Warden. Lots of folks chat me up and pet me. Life is good. Thanks to everyone who love their dogs and show them a great life. Thanks to all the folks who add to my life.

Rockies Hockey The Columbia Valley Rockies had a great weekend with a 6-2 victory over the undefeated Kimberley Dynamiters followed by a great golf tournament at The Ridge at Copper Point. Thanks to everyone who supported the golf tournament. This Saturday, September 30, the Spokane Braves are in town. Creston Valley will be here next Saturday. Let’s get out there and cheer on our hockey team. Fan support has been great with 350 fans each game. Let’s bump that up a bit. The 50/50 draw was more than $400 for the last game. That is a great prize for anyone in the stands. There are plenty of prizes for the fans plus it is fast-paced, exciting hockey. I hope to see you there.

These trivia nights are always lots of fun. I practice all year with Brain Drain questions but still seem to struggle with many of their questions.

I see a lot of businesses invest a lot of money into large, colouful ads in other publications. Often the ads just blend in with all of the large, colorful ads. Did you know that a $250 ad must bring in 10 clients for every one brought in by a $25 ad to be considered as effective? Ads in The Valley Peak are very affordable and very effective. I am always amused by new clients who are surprised to be getting results from their ads. But it nearly always happens because so many people read this little paper from cover to cover. Most ads come with write-ups about your business or event. And if you are reading this, you already know how effective it can be. Give effective advertising a try. Call 250-341-7243.
Employment Enjoyment My least favourite thing about staff parties is trying to find a new job the next day.
Poutine Palooza Poutine was first invented in 1957 in Quebec by restaurateur Ferand Lachance of Warwick. He would heap cheese curds and French fries into a plastic to-go bag for his customers. They loved it. Eventually a customer asked for gravy to be added and locals loved that even more. Now it can be found on the menu of many restaurants across Canada. Who makes the best poutine in the Columbia Valley? Find out on October 21. There will be several categories, including ‘People’s Choice’. Make sure you get out there and sample a few poutines and review them the week of October 15.

It is a gorgeous home and a great example of their product. The sales centre is open Friday to Monday, 10 am to 4 pm each day. Stop in on any weekend. They are located in the Lakeview area south of Copper Point Golf Course. Check their website at www.ANTLERRIDGE.ca.
Where I Was The photo on page 6 is a fairly generic one of a beautiful stream in the valley. There are lots of them around. Spend an afternoon exploring. This one is the Skookumchuk River.
Defined I am told that I am condescending. That means I talk down to people.

For the past two years, advertising has really slowed down for The Valley Peak. It leaves a bunch of open ad space in the paper. I filled it with a full page ‘Where’s the Puck?’ feature contest. This year is a bit different so far. Many advertisers have determined that The Valley Peak is the place to be so I have not had the usual drop off. This is an important time of year to reach the locals and the visitors. ‘Where’s the Puck?’ will appear in The Valley Peak in a few weeks. Until then, enjoy the great read every week.
Super Sleeper One of the best traits of Watson the Basset Hound is his ability to sleep. He lives a very active life with lots of walks and runs but when it is time to rest, he is ready. He likes to go to bed much earlier than I do and he doesn’t seem to care much about getting up in the morning (unless he knows that I am ready to walk out the door). Even more amazing is the size of his bladder. He can easily go 16 hours without needing to go pee. It is crazy. For me, between sleep apnea and a tiny bladder, I am lucky if I can get in two straight hours of sleep. I wake up gasping for breath an needing pee breaks.

September 28-October 4, 2017 Monday Night Live The Horsethief Creek Pub puts on live music every Monday evening from 7 pm to 9 pm. There have been some amazing musicians performing there. This Monday, October 2, Ted Alexander will be lighting up the stage. Ted is a great musician and very entertaining. On October 9, ‘The Raven & the Fox’ will be performing. It will be another great show.
Fire Ban Lifted The campfire ban has been lifted. That means that we can have small campfires (50 cm by 50 cm) again. The backcountry restrictions have also been lifted although there are a couple of areas still closed to the public due to fire suppression activities. Things are still pretty dry out there so please be very careful with everything. The bush is busy with hunters and firewood gatherers. I am hoping that everyone is respectful and good stewards of the back country.

brightly highlighted. Mount Nelson catches my eye nearly every morning. We see the same thing with the peaks to the East as the sun is setting. The Fairmont range is outstanding. Life is so much better for me when I take the time to notice the beauty of nature as often as possible. We are actually starting to get fresh snow in the mountains. The Farmer’s Almanac is calling for a lot of snow this winter.
Meteorites Recently a bright light crossed the sky and finished with a bang and a really bright flash. It was determined to be a meteorite, a piece of debris from space that has entered our atmosphere. Did you know that Canadian soil gets hit by at least one 100-gram meteorite every day, but fewer than 75 have ever been found because in most areas no one is around to see or hear them fall.

Why didn’t the dinosaur cross the road? Because there were no roads in the Jurassic Period. Have you ever visited the Purple Cow Gift Shop in Fairmont? It is a beautiful store with lots of unique items. They have games, puzzles, books, t-shirts, fire pots, home décor and so much more. The store is very classy.
