September 7-13, 2017 Mrs. Holmes Many of us knew her as Lorraine, Peter’s awesome wife and partner. Many more knew her as ‘Mrs. Holmes’, that incredible teacher who took the extra time to reach into your child’s heart and help them through their school days. We lost Lorraine back in July and there is a celebration of her life this Sunday, September 10 at 2 pm at the new community centre in Invermere. You are invited to join her friends and family as they share stories of a wonderful lady. Remember that donations can be made in Lorraine’s name to the Invermere Companion Animal Network (ICAN).

Human nature is quite the adventure and with social media available we get to see a lot of examples of human kind (or unkind). We all think we are right about everything. Actually, we know that we are right. And usually that means that every other person out there is wrong. They are doing something wrong or saying something wrong. They are just not right. And it is each of our responsibilities to decide what they should be doing that is different. We feel we have to judge and correct other peoples’ behaviors until they fall in line with our thoughts and beliefs. I know that I do it. Not as often or intensely as I used to, but I still think I know what is best for everyone. It is a bad feature. Like most people, I should look within myself to seek changes. I don’t really need to worry about whether or not other folks are doing something ‘wrong’. It is not really my business and it makes me unsettled and stressed. What if their behavior is affecting my life? Well, is it really or am I just letting it get to me? That is all within me. It is just something that I have to learn to control. Let it go. Pick my battles. Etc. Reduce stress by working on my own life and attitudes.
Camp Fire Did you hear about the wildfire that took out the campground? They say the flames were intense.
Final Farmers’ Market Summer is pretty much done. The Labour Day weekend generally indicates the unofficial end of it all. But there is still one more Invermere Farmers’ and Artisans’ Market in downtown Invermere. It will be this Saturday, September 9, from 9 am to 1 pm. Food is abundant, whether picking up fresh produce, baking or meats for a meal at home or enjoying one of the many awesome edibles available during the market. The skill of the artisans and crafts folk is also amazing. There are so many things to choose from. Get down there this weekend for a final fun shopping session. The Dandelions will be performing at the market from 10 am to 1 pm. They are a super-talented duo that everyone will really enjoy.

Well, for a hound dog, I have had a great weekend. I hung out with a lot of cool people, got lots of love and lots of naps. Rob and I did night security on the fire fighters’ camp in Invermere. I was loved up by about 45 people every night. Those folks are putting in long hard days away from their loved ones (and their pets). They pretty much get back to camp after dinner, have a quick shower and hit the hay. A few hang out and chat for a bit but most are pretty much exhausted. But they all would take the time to sneak in a few little rubs for me. I am pretty cute and handsome with these big, loving eyes and huge soft ears. It is hard not to pet me. It was great for me and for them. Sharing love is always good. I could tell that they felt good when they were petting me and making me feel good. That is a very nice feeling. I had an awesome moment of pride when a couple deer tried to come into the area. The crews were impressed by how fast I could move when I needed to. They all had a good chuckle at my proud trot back after chasing them away. So this is my ‘howl out’ to those folks. I enjoyed our visits. Be safe out there.
What Year Was It? The United States and others boycotted the Moscow Olympic Summer Games, Mount St. Helens erupted, John Lennon was shot and Alfred Hitchcock passed away. Ronald Reagan became U.S. President, Pierre Trudeau returned to office, Terry Fox began his ‘Marathon of Hope’, PacMan was released and camcorders were sold for the first time. What year was it? See page 9.
Disillusioned I bought a really lousy book about magic. Obviously no one did a spell check.

At the Seniors’ Centre September is a busy month at the Invermere Seniors’ Centre, which is the blue building located adjacent to J A Laird Elementary School field. The Centre is pleased to announce the start of bridge lessons for beginners. The time is Tuesdays and Wednesdays, 10 am to noon on September 12, 13, 19, 20, 26 and 27. The cost is $10 for the 6 lessons. There is still time to register. Just call Anita, the instructor, at 250-341-8491. A note to those who have signed up for the lessons - bridge is just a game, have fun, enjoy meeting new people, and may you have bridge hands with lots of aces, kings and queens!
Sports Snacks For years, hot dogs were the only food served at sporting events. The fans complained to management until concessions were made.
Sad Endings With the abundance of ripe fruit in the area, the bears are out and about trying to fatten up for winter hibernation. They love fruit, but they also love barbecues, garbage and more. Last week a bear was put down in Fairmont as it found its way into a home. It was living well off of fruit and garbage until someone left a patio door open. Please deal with your bear attractants. Pick your fruit, store your garbage properly and all of that stuff. There are already too many sad endings for bears in our area.

Evacuation Prepared Are you prepared to evacuate? There are a lot of communities in British Columbia that are being cleared out because of wildfires. We have been fortunate so far in the valley but you never know when that can change. Things are happening very fast. Did you see the thick cloud of smoke on Sunday evening up towards White Swan Lake? That indicated some pretty intense fire activity up in the mountains. It is pretty tricky terrain for suppression activities.

Tomatoes The tomato is a great example of a delicious fresh food from the garden. I was never a huge fan of tomatoes during my youth. Then I tasted a fresh tomato from my friend’s garden. What a difference. Now I love this time of year when there is an abundance of fresh tomatoes in gardens all around. I just finished a toasted tomato sandwich from my neighbours’ garden. They are very generous people. And their tomatoes are very fleshy and very sweet. There are actually times when I am craving such a sandwich. Harvest time is a good time of year.

Tough Days
RADIUM OUTDOOR MOVIE LEGENDS FIELD SAT. SEPT. 9
I did some security work with the Fire Camp last weekend. It was an interesting experience listening to the fire crews discuss their days on the mountains trying to get things under control. These folks have to be so aware. When the wind changes, so does the fire activity and direction. There are a few incidents of crews evacuating areas so quickly that they are having to leave gear behind. It is crazy. Thanks to all these fire crews for doing their best to keep us safe. Thanks also to the locals who are providing services to help them out. Especially those who have dropped off treats, helped with laundry and stuff like that. The crews appreciate it.

So the back country has been closed down due to wildfire risk. Things are tinder-dry out there and it is a very volatile situation. Every activity in the backcountry is considered high risk as a wildfire can easily be started by a hot exhaust system or a simple spark from a piece of machinery. I cannot give all the details of the closure as it is still being modified daily as they figure out what is needed. It is both entertaining and depressing seeing all the people who think it should not apply to them. There are a lot of entitled, selfish folks in this world who feel that their need to go fishing, hunting, hiking, floating, etc. outweighs the safety of the general population. They all know better. Please be respectful of the closure. It is impossible to monitor every spot in every area and enforcement staff is a bit limited.

Sweet Memories
Curling
September 7 was my Father’s birthday. He has been gone for several years now (seems like yesterday) but he has left his mark on me forever. He loved to stop and chat with anyone, exchanging energy with friends and strangers alike. He was a hard worker (I think I missed that part), honest, loving, forgiving, caring and more. Happy birthday Dad. I still totally think about you and miss you and I am grateful for all you did for all of us.
Everyone enjoys throwing a stone, drawing, a good take-out and especially a raise. Those are all just some of the everyday pleasures that are incorporated into the game of curling. How about sweeping? Everyone loves that at home so of course we want to pick up some of that recreationally haha. It is a lot of fun. Social, healthy, competitive and more. Come to the AGM and registration evening in early October.
Power Smart
Canadiana
Are you in a position of ‘power’? Are you a manager or owner who supervises others? How do you approach your power? It is pretty important that you are respected by the folks that work for (with) you. How do you gain respect? By giving respect. Show your people that they have value for you. Everyone is important in this world of ours and it is critical that they know it. Be grateful and appreciative of everything and everyone and you will develop a great team.
In 1912, Charles Saunders jumped out of a plane at Hastings Park in Vancouver. He was the first Canadian and only the third person in history to jump from a plane. And he was only the second non-fatal jumper in history.
Yes Sir “Are you two twins?” I asked. “Why?” “Because your mommy dressed you the same.” “That’s enough sir. Hand me your driver’s license.”
Go Wild B.C. On Saturday, September 16, as part of ‘Let’ Go Wild, B.C.’ weekend, WildsafeBC is hosting a Camping Tips and Bear Spray demonstration. Get down to Pothole Park from 10 am to 1 pm for a ‘Bare Camping’ presentation and a Bear Spray demonstration. It will be a fun event for people of all ages.
Search Fore Food I like food. I think that is very apparent by reading The Valley Peak or by looking at how big I am right now. Now that nice weather is upon us, several restaurants open up that many folks don’t even consider checking out. Golf courses all offer food services and most of the courses in the valley have tremendous food. So if you are thinking about heading out for a meal, consider visiting a golf course. You will be pleasantly surprised.
