The Creed - Statement of Faith I believe in one God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, and of all things visible and invisible. And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only begotten Son of God, begotten of the Father before all worlds; God of God, Light of Light, very God of very God; begotten, not made; being of one substance with the Father, by whom all things were made. Who, for us men and for our salvation, came down from heaven, and was incarnate by the Holy Spirit of the Virgin Mary, and was made man; and was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate. He suffered and died and was buried; and the third day He rose again, according to the Scriptures, and ascended into heaven, and sits at the right hand of the Father; and He shall come again, with glory, to judge the living and the dead; whose Kingdom shall have no end. And I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord and Giver of Life; who proceeds from the Father; who with the Father and the Son, together is worshiped and glorified; who spoke by the prophets. And I believe in one, holy and apostolic church. I believe in the Scriptures, confirmed by our Lord Jesus Christ; as the true Word of God, inspired, by the Spirit of God. I acknowledge, one baptism for the remission of sins; in the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit; And I hope for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

What is Salvation? John 3:16 - “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. The simplest definition of salvation is to be delivered (or rescued) from peril/danger. God made Adam and Eve and they sinned. And because they sinned, we all became sinners through them. God sent Jesus Christ to rescue us from the consequence of our sin, and everybody falls into the category of sinner.
Why be Saved? John 3:5 - Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and [of] the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. Though life on earth is temporary, life is eternal and it never ends. The decision we all have to make is whether, we will spend it, either, in hell or heaven. Romans 3:23 - For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God; The real problem is sin and guilt. That's the issue. It doesn't matter whether you're among the haves or the have-nots, whether you have great expectations or none at all, whether you're consumed by your passions or exhibit a degree of self-control and discipline-you are still a sinner. You have broken the law of God and He's angry about it. Unless something happens to change your condition, you're on your way to eternal hell. You need to be rescued from the consequences of your sin.
How Can I be Saved? Romans 10:9-10 - That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. Beauty of salvation is that it is the free of God to mankind and available to all who are willing to accept it and obey His commandments in the Word of God. Repeat the prayer below, earnestly and sincerely from the heart and the Lord will save you.
Prayer of Salvation Father in heaven, I admit that I am a sinner. I have done many things that does not please you. I have lived my life for myself only. I am sorry, and I repent for my ways. I ask you to forgive me all my sins and cleanse me by the blood of your Son, Jesus Christ.. I believe that your Son, Jesus Christ, died on the cross of Calvary for me, to save me and You raised Him up from the dead. You did what I could not do for myself. I come to you now and ask you to take control of my life; I give it to you. From this day forward, You are the Lord of my life and my Saviour. Help me to live every day for you, and in a way that pleases you. I love you, Lord, and I thank you that I will spend all eternity with you. In the name of Jesus Christ I pray, Amen.

STUDY GUIDE WHY SHOULD I STUDY GOD’s WORD? God’s Words are in the Bible. This is the most important subject you will ever learn. All that you study in school and life, ends with this life. What you study here, stays with you in this life and in the next, all throughout eternity. The Bible contains the mind of God, the state of man, the way of salvation, the doom of sinners, and the happiness of believers. Its doctrines are holy, its precepts are binding, its histories are true, and its decisions are immutable. Read it to be wise, believe it to be safe, and practice it to be holy. It contains light to direct you, food to support you, and comfort to cheer you. It is the traveler’s map, the pilgrim’s staff, the pilot’s compass, the soldier’s sword and the Christian’s charter. Here too, Heaven is opened and the gates of Hell disclosed. Christ is its grand subject, our good its design, and the glory of God its end. It should fill the memory, rule the heart and guide the feet. Read it slowly, frequently and prayerfully. It is a mine of wealth, a paradise of glory, and a river of pleasure. It is given you in life, will be opened at the judgment, and be remembered forever. It involves the highest responsibility, rewards the greatest labor, and will condemn all who trifle with its sacred contents.
HOW SHOULD I STUDY? Your school textbooks change and the information keeps changing as new things come along. God’s word does not change. God’s word has been written with you and your life in mind. It will speak to you. ❏
Seek to Understand :
- Try to understand the Word of God. Ask
God to speak to you through His Word and He will.
❏
Memorize It
: - God’s word has no expiry. It is your guide and lamp,
on your way to eternity. The more you remember, better you understand His will. Steps to memorizing God’s Word a. Start by reading the verse you want to memorize atleast 5-10 times b. Try to recall and repeat the verse you want to learn. c. Read again and check if you were correct d. Repeat the steps from step ‘a’ If you follow the above listed steps, you will develop ability to memorize easily and quickly, ❏
Revise It
: - Regularly read and revise, what you learned, to ensure
that you don’t forget them. a. Repeat at least 3 times, whenever you revise the memorised verse. b. If you systematically revise, you’ll never forget what you learned.

34. In the darkness, where ev'rything is unknown, I faced the power of sin on my own. I did not know of the place I could go, where I could find a way to heal my wounded soul. He said that I could come into His presence without fear, into the holy place where His mercy hovers near. I'm running, I'm running, I'm running to the mercy seat where Jesus is calling. His grace will be my covering, His blood will flow freely, it will provide my healing. I'm running to the mercy seat. Are you living where hope has not been? Lost in the curse of a lifetime of sin? Lovely illusions, they never come true, But I know where there's a place of mercy for you. He said that you could come into His presence without fear, into the holy place where His mercy hovers near. Come running, come running, come running to the mercy seat where Jesus is calling, His grace will be your covering. His blood will flow freely, it will provide your healing. 39 .In Christ alone my hope is found He is my light, my strength, my song This cornerstone, this solid ground, Firm through the fiercest drought and storm. What heights of love, what depths of peace, When fears are stilled, when strivings cease! My comforter, my all in all Here in the love of Christ I stand. In Christ alone, Who took on flesh, Fullness of God in helpless babe! This gift of love and righteousness, Scorned by the ones He came to save. 'Til on that cross as Jesus died, The wrath of God was satisfied For ev'ry sin on Him was laid Here in the death of Christ I live. 19 So are the ways of everyone who is greedy for gain; It takes away the life of its owners. 20 Wisdom calls aloud outside; She raises her voice in the open squares.
17 Surely, in vain the net is spread; In the sight of any bird; 18 But they lie in wait for their own blood,They lurk secretly for their own lives.
15 My son, do not walk in the way with them, Keep your foot from their path; 16 For their feet run to evil, And they make haste to shed blood.

25 Because you disdained all my counsel, And would have none of my rebuke, 26 I also will laugh at your calamity;I will mock when your terror comes,

31 Therefore they shall eat the fruit of their own way,And be filled to the full with their own fancies. 32 For the Proverbs 1:31-33 turning away of the simple will slay them,And the complacency of fools will destroy them; 33 But whoever listens to me will dwell safely, And will be secure, without fear of evil.”

21 “You have heard that it was said to those of old, ‘You shall not murder, and whoever murders will be in danger of the judgment.’
20 For I say to you, that unless your righteousness exceeds the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees, you will by no means enter the kingdom of heaven.
19 Whoever therefore breaks one of the least of these commandments, and teaches men so, shall be called least in the kingdom of heaven; but whoever does and teaches them, he shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven.
18 For assuredly, I say to you, till heaven and earth pass away, one [b]jot or one [c]tittle will by no means pass from the law till all is fulfilled.
17 “Do not think that I came to destroy the Law or the Prophets. I did not come to destroy but to fulfill.
16 Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.
14 “You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden. 15 Nor do they light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house.
13 “You are the salt of the earth; but if the salt loses its flavor, how shall it be seasoned? It is then good for nothing but to be thrown out and trampled underfoot by men.
12 Rejoice and be exceedingly glad, for great is your reward in heaven, for so they persecuted the prophets who were before you.
11 Blessed are you when they revile and persecute you, and say all kinds of evil against you falsely for My sake.
7.The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge, But fools despise wisdom and instruction. 8.My son, hear the instruction of your father, And do not forsake the law of your mother;
5.A wise man will hear and increase learning, And a man of understanding will attain wise counsel, 6.To understand a proverb and an enigma, The words of the wise and their riddles.
3.To receive the instruction of wisdom,Justice, judgment, and equity; 4.To give prudence to the simple,To the young man knowledge and discretion—
1.The proverbs of Solomon the son of David, king of Israel: 2.To know wisdom and instruction, To perceive the words of understanding,
16 With long life I will satisfy him, And show him My Salvation.
15 He shall call upon Me, and I will answer him;I will be with him in trouble; I will deliver him and honor him.
14 “Because he has set his love upon Me, therefore I will deliver him; I will set him on high, because he has known My name.
13 You shall tread upon the lion and the cobra,The young lion and the serpent you shall trample underfoot.
12 In their hands they shall bear you up, Lest you dash your foot against a stone.
11 For He shall give His angels charge over you, To keep you in all your ways.
10 No evil shall befall you, Nor shall any plague come near your dwelling;
9 Because you have made the Lord, who is my refuge, Even the Most High, your dwelling place,
8 Only with your eyes shall you look, And see the reward of the wicked.
7 A thousand may fall at your side, And ten thousand at your right hand; But it shall not come near you.

As Jesus went on from there, he saw a man named Matthew sitting at the tax collector’s booth. “Follow me,” he told him, and Matthew got up and followed him. 10 While Jesus was having dinner at Matthew’s house, many tax collectors and “sinners” came and ate with him and 11 his disciples. The Healing at the Pool John 5:1-15 John 5 1
Some time later, Jesus went up to Jerusalem for a feast of the Jews. 2Now there is in Jerusalem near the Sheep Gate a pool, which in Aramaic is called Bethesda and which is surrounded by five covered colonnades. 3Here a great number of disabled people used to lie—the blind, the lame, the paralyzed. 5One who was there had been an invalid for thirtyeight years. 6When Jesus saw him lying there and learned that he had been in this condition for a long time, he asked him, “Do you want to get well?” 7 “Sir,” the invalid replied, “I have no one to help me into the pool when the water is stirred. While I am trying to get in, someone else goes down ahead of me.” 8 Then Jesus said to him, “Get up! Pick up your mat and walk.” 9 At once the man was cured; he picked up his mat and walked.
The day on which this took place was a Sabbath, 10and so the Jews said to the man who had been healed, “It is the Sabbath; the law forbids you to carry your mat.” 11 But he replied, “The man who made me well said to me, ‘Pick up your mat and walk.’” 12 So they asked him, “Who is this fellow who told you to pick it up and walk?” 13 The man who was healed had no idea who it was, for Jesus had slipped away into the crowd that was there. 14 Later Jesus found him at the temple and said to him, “See, you are well again. Stop sinning or something worse may happen to you.” 15The man went away and told the Jews that it was Jesus who had made him well.

THE HEALING AT THE POOL In Jerusalem, there was a very special pool that disabled people used to go to. Some of the people were blind, lame, or paralyzed. This pool could make the people well. One man had been sitting by the pool for 38 years. He could not walk. Jesus saw the man and asked him, “Do you want to get well?” “Sir,” the man said, “I have no one to help me into the pool when the water is stirred. While I am trying to get in, someone else goes down ahead of me.” Jesus told the man, “Get up! Pick up your mat and walk.” At once, the man was healed. He picked up his mat and walked. Some Jews that were watching were upset to see the man carrying is mat on the Sabbath. On the Sabbath people were not supposed to work. Carrying a mat was considered work. The Jews wanted to know who told the man to pick up his mat and walk. Later, Jesus saw the man in the temple and told him to stop sinning or something worse may happen to him. The man left and told the Jews that it was Jesus who healed him. For more details, please read John 5:1-15 in your Bible.

The Bread of Life John 6:32-40 John 6 32
Jesus said to them, “I tell you the truth, it is not Moses who has given you the bread from heaven, but it is my Father who gives you the true bread from heaven. 33For the bread of God is he who comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.” 34 “Sir,” they said, “from now on give us this bread.” 35 Then Jesus declared, “I am the bread of life. He who comes to me will never go hungry, and he who believes in me will never be thirsty. 36But as I told you, you have seen me and still you do not believe. 37All that the Father gives me will come
to me, and whoever comes to me I will never drive away. 38For I have come down from heaven not to do my will but to do the will of him who sent me. 39 And this is the will of him who sent me, that I shall lose none of all that he has given me, but raise them up at the last day. 40 For my Father’s will is that everyone who looks to the Son and believes in him shall have eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day.

For a Short Time John 7:25-44 John 7 25
At that point some of the people of Jerusalem began to ask, “Isn’t this the man they are trying to kill? 26Here he is, speaking publicly, and they are not saying a word to him. Have the authorities really concluded that he is the Christ? 27But we know where this man is from; when the Christ comes, no one will know where he is from.” 28 Then Jesus, still teaching in the temple courts, cried out, “Yes, you know me, and you know where I am from. I am not here on my own, but he who sent me is true. You do not know him, 29but I know him because I am from him and he sent me.” 30 At this they tried to seize him, but no one laid a hand on him, because his time had not yet come. 31Still, many in the crowd put their faith in him. They said, “When the Christ comes, will he do more miraculous signs than this man?” 32 The Pharisees heard the crowd whispering such things about him. Then the chief priests and the Pharisees sent temple guards to arrest him. 33 Jesus said, “I am with you for only a short time, and then I go to the one who sent me. 34You will look for me, but you will not find me; and where I am, you cannot come.”
35
The Jews said to one another, “Where does this man intend to go that we cannot find him? Will he go where our people live scattered among the Greeks, and teach the Greeks? 36What did he mean when he said, ‘You will look for me, but you will not find me,’ and ‘Where I am, you cannot come’?” 37 On the last and greatest day of the Feast, Jesus stood and said in a loud voice, “If anyone is thirsty, let him come to me and drink. 38Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, streams of living water will flow from within him.” 39By this he meant the Spirit, whom those who believed in him were later to receive. Up to that time the Spirit had not been given, since Jesus had not yet been glorified. 40 On hearing his words, some of the people said, “Surely this man is the Prophet.” 41 Others said, “He is the Christ.” Still others asked, “How can the Christ come from Galilee? 42Does not the Scripture say that the Christ will come from David’s family and from Bethlehem, the town where David lived?” 43Thus the people were divided because of Jesus. 44Some wanted to seize him, but no one laid a hand on him. QUESTIONS
FOR A SHORT TIME
1. Who was the one who sent Jesus to the people?
Jesus was teaching the people in the temple courts. Some of the people in the crowd did not know that Jesus was God’s son. Jesus told the crowd that he was sent from God. Some of the people put their faith in Jesus while others tried to arrest him. Jesus said, “I am with you for a short time and then I will go to the one who sent me. You will look for me, but you will not find me.” The crowd did not understand that Jesus was going back to heaven to be with his father. The people would not be able to find Jesus in heaven. Jesus also told the crowd, “If anyone is thirsty, let him come to me and drink. Whoever believes in me, as Scripture has said, streams of living water will flow from within him.” Jesus was using colorful language to describe the Holy Spirit that they would receive later. Anyone who believed in Jesus would receive the Holy Spirit after he went back to heaven. For more details, please read John 7:25-44 in the Bible.
2. What did Jesus mean when he said: "You will look for me, but you will not find me"?

Jesus Heals a Man Born Blind John 9:1-34 John 9 1
As he went along, he saw a man blind from birth. 2His disciples asked him, “Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?” 3 “Neither this man nor his parents sinned,” said Jesus, “but this happened so that the work of God might be displayed in his life. 4As long as it is day, we must do the work of him who sent me. Night is coming, when no one can work. 5While I am in the world, I am the light of the world.” 6 Having said this, he spit on the ground, made some mud with the saliva, and put it on the man’s eyes. 7“Go,” he told him, “wash in the Pool of Siloam” (this word means Sent). So the man went and washed, and came home seeing. 8 His neighbors and those who had formerly seen him begging asked, “Isn’t this the same man who used to sit and beg?” 9Some claimed that he was. Others said, “No, he only looks like him.” But he himself insisted, “I am the man.” 10 “How then were your eyes opened?” they demanded. 11 He replied, “The man they call Jesus made some mud and put it on my eyes. He told me to go to Siloam and wash. So I went and washed, and then I could see.” 12 “Where is this man?” they asked him. “I don’t know,” he said. 13 They brought to the Pharisees the man who had been blind. 14Now the day on which Jesus had made the mud and opened the man’s eyes was a Sabbath. 15Therefore the Pharisees also asked him how he had received his sight. “He put mud on my eyes,” the man replied, “and I washed, and now I see.” 16 Some of the Pharisees said, “This man is not from God, for he does not keep the Sabbath.” But others asked, “How can a sinner do such miraculous signs?” So they were divided. 17 Finally they turned again to the blind man, “What have you to say about him? It was your eyes he opened.” The man replied, “He is a prophet.”
18
The Jews still did not believe that he had been blind and had received his sight until they sent for the man’s parents. 19“Is this your son?” they asked. “Is this the one you say was born blind? How is it that now he can see?” 20 “We know he is our son,” the parents answered, “and we know he was born blind. 21But how he can see now, or who opened his eyes, we don’t know. Ask him. He is of age; he will speak for himself.” 22His parents said this because they were afraid of the Jews, for already the Jews had decided that anyone who acknowledged that Jesus was the Christ would be put out of the synagogue. 23That was why his parents said, “He is of age; ask him.” 24 A second time they summoned the man who had been blind. “Give glory to God,” they said. “We know this man is a sinner.” 25 He replied, “Whether he is a sinner or not, I don’t know. One thing I do know. I was blind but now I see!” 26 Then they asked him, “What did he do to you? How did he open your eyes?” 27 He answered, “I have told you already and you did not listen. Why do you want to hear it again? Do you want to become his disciples, too?” 28 Then they hurled insults at him and said, “You are this fellow’s disciple! We are disciples of Moses! 29We know that God spoke to Moses, but as for this fellow, we don’t even know where he comes from.” 30 The man answered, “Now that is remarkable! You don’t know where he comes from, yet he opened my eyes. 31We know that God does not listen to sinners. He listens to the godly man who does his will. 32Nobody has ever heard of opening the eyes of a man born blind. 33If this man were not from God, he could do nothing.” 34 To this they replied, “You were steeped in sin at birth; how dare you lecture us!” And they threw him out.

JESUS HEALS A MAN BORN BLIND As Jesus was traveling with his disciples, they came upon a man who was born blind. His disciples thought that sin was the cause of his blindness. Jesus told his disciples that this happened so that the work of God might be displayed in his life. Then Jesus spit on the ground and made mud with the saliva and put the mud on the man’s eyes. Jesus told the man to wash in the Pool of Siloam. When the man came home he could see! The man told his neighbors what had happened. The neighbors brought the man to the Pharisees. The Pharisees had a hard time believing that Jesus had healed the man. They even asked the man’s parents if he was born blind. Jesus used this story to teach the people that when you don’t see the things of God, it is like you are blind. Jesus, however, can heal your spiritual blindness. The Good Shepherd John 10:1-21
Jesus takes care of us like a shepherd takes care of his sheep Page 45 of 133
The Good Shepherd John 10:1-21 John 10 1 “I tell you the truth, the man who does not enter the sheep pen by the gate, but climbs in by some other way, is a thief and a robber. 2The man who enters by the gate is the shepherd of his sheep. 3The watchman opens the gate for him, and the sheep listen to his voice. He calls his own sheep by name and leads them out. 4When he has brought out all his own, he goes on ahead of them, and his sheep follow him because they know his voice. 5But they will never follow a stranger; in fact, they will run away from him because they do not recognize a stranger’s voice.” 6Jesus used this figure of speech, but they did not understand what he was telling them. 7 Therefore Jesus said again, “I tell you the truth, I am the gate for the sheep. 8All who ever came before me were thieves and robbers, but the sheep did not listen to them. 9I am the gate; whoever enters through me will be saved. He will come in and go out, and find pasture. 10The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full. 11 “I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for
the sheep. 12The hired hand is not the shepherd who owns the sheep. So when he sees the wolf coming, he abandons the sheep and runs away. Then the wolf attacks the flock and scatters it. 13The man runs away because he is a hired hand and cares nothing for the sheep. 14 “I am the good shepherd; I know my sheep and my sheep know me— 15 just as the Father knows me and I know the Father—and I lay down my life for the sheep. 16I have other sheep that are not of this sheep pen. I must bring them also. They too will listen to my voice, and there shall be one flock and one shepherd. 17The reason my Father loves me is that I lay down my life—only to take it up again. 18No one takes it from me, but I lay it down of my own accord. I have authority to lay it down and authority to take it up again. This command I received from my Father.” 19 At these words the Jews were again divided. 20Many of them said, “He is demon-possessed and raving mad. Why listen to him?” 21 But others said, “These are not the sayings of a man possessed by a demon. Can a demon open the eyes of the blind?” Page 46 of 133

QUESTIONS
THE GOOD SHEPHERD
1. Who is “the good shepherd”?
Jesus taught the crowd about shepherds. He said a shepherd loves and cares for his sheep. The sheep know the shepherd’s voice and they follow him. The shepherd knows each of the sheep by name. The sheep do not follow a stranger because they do not recognize the stranger’s voice. Then Jesus compared himself to a shepherd and his followers to sheep. Jesus said, “I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep. I know my sheep and my sheep know me. I lay down my life for the sheep”. The Jewish people who were listening to Jesus did not understand what Jesus was saying. Many of them thought Jesus was crazy or demon-possessed. Jesus Makes Lazarus Live John 11:1-44 John 11 1
Now a man named Lazarus was sick. He was from Bethany, the village of Mary and her sister Martha. 2This Mary, whose brother Lazarus now lay sick, was the same one who poured perfume on the Lord and wiped his feet with her hair. 3So the sisters sent word to Jesus, “Lord, the one you love is sick.” 4 When he heard this, Jesus said, “This sickness will not end in death. No, it is for God’s glory so that God’s Son may be glorified through it.” 5Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus. 6Yet when he heard that Lazarus was sick, he stayed where he was two more days. 7 Then he said to his disciples, “Let us go back to Judea.” 8 “But Rabbi,” they said, “a short while ago the Jews tried to stone you, and yet you are going back there?” 9 Jesus answered, “Are there not twelve hours of daylight? A man who walks by day will not stumble, for he sees by this world’s light. 10It is when he walks by night that he stumbles, for he has no light.” 11 After he had said this, he went on to tell them, “Our friend Lazarus has fallen asleep; but I am going there to wake him up.” 12 His disciples replied, “Lord, if he sleeps, he will get better.” 13Jesus had been speaking of his death, but his disciples thought he meant natural sleep. 14 So then he told them plainly, “Lazarus is dead, 15 and for your sake I am glad I was not there, so that you may believe. But let us go to him.” 16 Then Thomas (called Didymus) said to the rest of the disciples, “Let us also go, that we may die with him.” 17 On his arrival, Jesus found that Lazarus had already been in the tomb for four days. 18Bethany was less than two miles from Jerusalem, 19and many Jews had come to Martha and Mary to comfort them in the loss of their brother. 20When Martha heard that Jesus was coming, she went out to meet him, but Mary stayed at home. 21 “Lord,” Martha said to Jesus, “if you had been here, my brother would not have died. 22But I know that even now God will give you whatever you ask.” 23 Jesus said to her, “Your brother will rise again.” 24 Martha answered, “I know he will rise again in the resurrection at the last day.” 25 Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will live, even though he dies; 26and whoever lives and believes in me will never die. Do you believe this?”
27
“Yes, Lord,” she told him, “I believe that you are the Christ, the Son of God, who was to come into the world.” 28 And after she had said this, she went back and called her sister Mary aside. “The Teacher is here,” she said, “and is asking for you.” 29When Mary heard this, she got up quickly and went to him. 30Now Jesus had not yet entered the village, but was still at the place where Martha had met him. 31When the Jews who had been with Mary in the house, comforting her, noticed how quickly she got up and went out, they followed her, supposing she was going to the tomb to mourn there. 32 When Mary reached the place where Jesus was and saw him, she fell at his feet and said, “Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died.” 33 When Jesus saw her weeping, and the Jews who had come along with her also weeping, he was deeply moved in spirit and troubled. 34“Where have you laid him?” he asked. “Come and see, Lord,” they replied. 35 Jesus wept. 36 Then the Jews said, “See how he loved him!” 37 But some of them said, “Could not he who opened the eyes of the blind man have kept this man from dying?” 38 Jesus, once more deeply moved, came to the tomb. It was a cave with a stone laid across the entrance. 39 “Take away the stone,” he said. “But, Lord,” said Martha, the sister of the dead man, “by this time there is a bad odor, for he has been there four days.” 40 Then Jesus said, “Did I not tell you that if you believed, you would see the glory of God?” 41 So they took away the stone. Then Jesus looked up and said, “Father, I thank you that you have heard me. 42I knew that you always hear me, but I said this for the benefit of the people standing here, that they may believe that you sent me.” 43 When he had said this, Jesus called in a loud voice, “Lazarus, come out!” 44The dead man came out, his hands and feet wrapped with strips of linen, and a cloth around his face. Jesus said to them, “Take off the grave clothes and let him go.”

Jesus Washes His Disciples’ Feet John 13:1-17 John 13 1
It was just before the Passover Feast. Jesus knew that the time had come for him to leave this world and go to the Father. Having loved his own who were in the world, he now showed them the full extent of his love. 2 The evening meal was being served, and the devil had already prompted Judas Iscariot, son of Simon, to betray Jesus. 3Jesus knew that the Father had put all things under his power, and that he had come from God and was returning to God; 4so he got up from the meal, took off his outer clothing, and wrapped a towel around his waist. 5 After that, he poured water into a basin and began to wash his disciples’ feet, drying them with the towel that was wrapped around him. 6 He came to Simon Peter, who said to him, “Lord, are you going to wash my feet?” 7 Jesus replied, “You do not realize now what I am doing, but later you will understand.” 8 “No,” said Peter, “you shall never wash my feet.” Jesus answered, “Unless I wash you, you have no part with me.”
9
“Then, Lord,” Simon Peter replied, “not just my feet but my hands and my head as well!” 10 Jesus answered, “A person who has had a bath needs only to wash his feet; his whole body is clean. And you are clean, though not every one of you.” 11For he knew who was going to betray him, and that was why he said not every one was clean. 12 When he had finished washing their feet, he put on his clothes and returned to his place. “Do you understand what I have done for you?” he asked them. 13“You call me ‘Teacher’ and ‘Lord,’ and rightly so, for that is what I am. 14Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another’s feet. 15I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you. 16I tell you the truth, no servant is greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him. 17Now that you know these things, you will be blessed if you do them.

While the meal was being served, Jesus got up and took off his outer clothing and wrapped a towel around his waist. Then he poured water into a basin and began to wash his disciples’ feet. Jesus used the towel that was wrapped around his waist to dry the disciples’ feet. Simon Peter did not want Jesus to wash his feet. But Jesus told Simon Peter that unless he washed his feet, Simon would not have any part of Jesus. Simon Peter said, “Then, Lord, not just my feet but my hands and my head as well!” Jesus washed his disciples’ feet as an example of what his disciples should do for others. Jesus wanted his disciples to serve others just as Jesus served them. To find out more, read John 13:1-17 in your Bible.

Jesus Heals a Man’s Hand Matthew 12:1-16
The man no longer has a shriveled hand Page 60 of 133
Jesus Heals a Man’s Hand Matthew 12:1-16 Matthew 12 1 At that time Jesus went through the grainfields on the Sabbath. His disciples were hungry and began to pick some heads of grain and eat them. 2 When the Pharisees saw this, they said to him, “Look! Your disciples are doing what is unlawful on the Sabbath.” 3 He answered, “Haven’t you read what David did when he and his companions were hungry? 4He entered the house of God, and he and his companions ate the consecrated bread—which was not lawful for them to do, but only for the priests. 5Or haven’t you read in the Law that on the Sabbath the priests in the temple desecrate the day and yet are innocent? 6I tell you that one greater than the temple is here. 7If you had known what these words mean, ‘I desire mercy, not sacrifice,’ you would not have condemned the innocent. 8For the Son of Man is Lord of the Sabbath.”
9
Going on from that place, he went into their synagogue, 10and a man with a shriveled hand was there. Looking for a reason to accuse Jesus, they asked him, “Is it lawful to heal on the Sabbath?” 11 He said to them, “If any of you has a sheep and it falls into a pit on the Sabbath, will you not take hold of it and lift it out? 12 How much more valuable is a man than a sheep! Therefore it is lawful to do good on the Sabbath.” 13 Then he said to the man, “Stretch out your hand.” So he stretched it out and it was completely restored, just as sound as the other. 14But the Pharisees went out and plotted how they might kill Jesus. 15 Aware of this, Jesus withdrew from that place. Many followed him, and he healed all their sick, 16 warning them not to tell who he was.

JESUS HEALS A MAN’S HAND
QUESTIONS 1. What did Jesus’ disciples do as they went through the grain fields?
It was the Sabbath and Jesus and his disciples were walking through a grain field. His disciples were hungry and began to pick and eat some of the grain. The Pharisees were watching and told Jesus that they were breaking the law because they were working on Sabbath. No work was to be done on the Sabbath. The Sabbath was a day for resting. Jesus said, “The Son of Man (Jesus) is Lord of the Sabbath.” Jesus then went into the synagogue and saw a man with a shriveled hand. The Pharisees wanted to see if Jesus would heal the man’s hand on the Sabbath. Jesus knew they were testing him. Jesus asked them, “If any of you has a sheep and it falls into a pit on the Sabbath, will you not take hold of it and lift it out? How much more valuable is a man than a sheep! You are not breaking the law if you do good on the Sabbath.” Jesus told the man to stretch out his hand. So the man stretched out his hand and it was healed. To find out more, check out Matthew 12:1-16 in your Bible.

God Protects Baby Moses Exodus 2:1-10 Exodus 2 1
Now a man of the house of Levi married a Levite woman, 2 and she became pregnant and gave birth to a son. When she saw that he was a fine child, she hid him for three months. 3 But when she could hide him no longer, she got a papyrus basket for him and coated it with tar and pitch. Then she placed the child in it and put it among the reeds along the bank of the Nile. 4His sister stood at a distance to see what would happen to him. 5 Then Pharaoh’s daughter went down to the Nile to bathe, and her attendants were walking along the river bank. She saw the basket among the reeds and sent her slave girl to get it. 6She opened it and saw the baby. He was crying, and she felt sorry for him.
“This is one of the Hebrew babies,” she said. 7 Then his sister asked Pharaoh’s daughter, “Shall I go and get one of the Hebrew women to nurse the baby for you?” 8 “Yes, go,” she answered. And the girl went and got the baby’s mother. 9Pharaoh’s daughter said to her, “Take this baby and nurse him for me, and I will pay you.” So the woman took the baby and nursed him. 10When the child grew older, she took him to Pharaoh’s daughter and he became her son. She named him Moses, saying, “I drew him out of the water.”

GOD PROTECTS BABY MOSES Pharaoh, the king of Egypt, wanted all the baby boys killed by throwing them into the Nile River. Pharaoh didn’t want the boys to grow up and fight against him. A boy named Moses was born during this time. Moses’ mother worried that he would be killed. She hid Moses for three months until she could hide him no longer. She got a basket and covered it with tar and pitch to keep the water out. Next, she placed Moses inside the basket and hid the basket in the Nile River among the reeds. Moses’ sister watched from a distance to see what would happen to him. Then, when Pharaoh’s daughter went to take a bath in the river, she saw the basket with Moses crying inside! Pharaoh’s daughter felt sorry for Moses so she had her servant take Moses out of the river. Moses’ sister asked Pharaoh’s daughter if she should get someone to take care of the baby. Pharaoh’s daughter agreed. Moses was taken back to his own mother to be cared for. Pharaoh’s daughter even paid Moses’ mother to care for him. When Moses grew up, his mother brought him to Pharaoh’s daughter to live with her. So Moses became the son of Pharaoh’s daughter. For more on this story, read Exodus 2:1-10 in your Bible.

Moses Grows Up Exodus 2:11-25 Exodus 2 11 One day, after Moses had grown up, he went out to where his own people were and watched them at their hard labor. He saw an Egyptian beating a Hebrew, one of his own people. 12Glancing this way and that and seeing no one, he killed the Egyptian and hid him in the sand. 13 The next day he went out and saw two Hebrews fighting. He asked the one in the wrong, “Why are you hitting your fellow Hebrew?” 14 The man said, “Who made you ruler and judge over us? Are you thinking of killing me as you killed the Egyptian?” Then Moses was afraid and thought, “What I did must have become known.” 15 When Pharaoh heard of this, he tried to kill Moses, but Moses fled from Pharaoh and went to live in Midian, where he sat down by a well. 16 Now a priest of Midian had seven daughters, and they came to draw water and fill the troughs to water their father’s flock. 17Some shepherds came along and drove them away, but Moses got up and came to their rescue and watered their flock.
18
When the girls returned to Reuel their father, he asked them, “Why have you returned so early today?” 19 They answered, “An Egyptian rescued us from the shepherds. He even drew water for us and watered the flock.” 20 “And where is he?” he asked his daughters. “Why did you leave him? Invite him to have something to eat.” 21 Moses agreed to stay with the man, who gave his daughter Zipporah to Moses in marriage. 22Zipporah gave birth to a son, and Moses named him Gershom, saying, “I have become an alien in a foreign land.” 23 During that long period, the king of Egypt died. The Israelites groaned in their slavery and cried out, and their cry for help because of their slavery went up to God. 24God heard their groaning and he remembered his covenant with Abraham, with Isaac and with Jacob. 25So God looked on the Israelites and was concerned about them.

MOSES GROWS UP God protected Moses by having his mother hide him in a basket in the Nile River. When Moses was about 40 years old, he saw an Egyptian beating up one of his own people. Moses didn’t like how the Egyptians treated the Hebrews. Moses was a Hebrew. When no one was looking, Moses killed the Egyptian and hid him in the sand. The next day, two of his own people were fighting. Moses asked why they were fighting. “Are you going to kill me as you killed the Egyptian?” one man asked. Moses was scared because even Pharaoh knew what Moses had done. Moses hid a place called Midian near a well. There was a priest who had seven daughters and they came to water their father’s flock. Some shepherds came and drove them away. Moses came to they girls’ rescue and watered the flock for them. The girls told their father what had happened. Their father invited Moses to stay with them. Later, Moses married one of the daughters and cared for his father-in-law’s flocks. But the Israelites in Egypt cried out to God for help. Pharaoh, the king of Egypt, had died, but the Israelites were still being treated poorly. God had not forgotten about his people. He was going to use Moses to help get his people out of Egypt! To find out more details about this story, read Exodus 2:11-25 in your Bible.

God Talks To Moses Exodus 3:1-22 Exodus 3 1
Now Moses was tending the flock of Jethro his father-in-law, the priest of Midian, and he led the flock to the far side of the desert and came to Horeb, the mountain of God. 2There the angel of the LORD appeared to him in flames of fire from within a bush. Moses saw that though the bush was on fire it did not burn up. 3So Moses thought, “I will go over and see this strange sight—why the bush does not burn up.” 4 When the LORD saw that he had gone over to look, God called to him from within the bush, “Moses! Moses!” And Moses said, “Here I am.” 5 “Do not come any closer,” God said. “Take off your sandals, for the place where you are standing is holy ground.” 6Then he said, “I am the God of your father, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob.” At this, Moses hid his face, because he was afraid to look at God. 7 The LORD said, “I have indeed seen the misery of my people in Egypt. I have heard them crying out because of their slave drivers, and I am concerned about their suffering. 8So I have come down to rescue them from the hand of the Egyptians and to bring them up out of that land into a good and spacious land, a land flowing with milk and honey—the home of the Canaanites, Hittites, Amorites, Perizzites, Hivites and Jebusites. 9And now the cry of the Israelites has reached me, and I have seen the way the Egyptians are oppressing them. 10So now, go. I am sending you to Pharaoh to bring my people the Israelites out of Egypt.” 11 But Moses said to God, “Who am I, that I should go to Pharaoh and bring the Israelites out of Egypt?” 12 And God said, “I will be with you. And this will be the sign to you that it is I who have sent you: When you have brought the people out of Egypt, you will worship God on this mountain.” 13 Moses said to God, “Suppose I go to the Israelites and say to them, ‘The God of your
fathers has sent me to you,’ and they ask me, ‘What is his name?’ Then what shall I tell them?” 14 God said to Moses, “I AM WHO I AM.This is what you are to say to the Israelites: ‘I AM has sent me to you.’” 15 God also said to Moses, “Say to the Israelites, ‘The LORD, the God of your fathers— the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob—has sent me to you.’ This is my name forever, the name by which I am to be remembered from generation to generation. 16 “Go, assemble the elders of Israel and say to them, ‘The LORD, the God of your fathers—the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob—appeared to me and said: I have watched over you and have seen what has been done to you in Egypt. 17And I have promised to bring you up out of your misery in Egypt into the land of the Canaanites, Hittites, Amorites, Perizzites, Hivites and Jebusites—a land flowing with milk and honey.’ 18 “The elders of Israel will listen to you. Then you and the elders are to go to the king of Egypt and say to him, ‘The LORD, the God of the Hebrews, has met with us. Let us take a three-day journey into the desert to offer sacrifices to the LORD our God.’ 19But I know that the king of Egypt will not let you go unless a mighty hand compels him. 20So I will stretch out my hand and strike the Egyptians with all the wonders that I will perform among them. After that, he will let you go. 21 “And I will make the Egyptians favorably disposed toward this people, so that when you leave you will not go empty-handed. 22Every woman is to ask her neighbor and any woman living in her house for articles of silver and gold and for clothing, which you will put on your sons and daughters. And so you will plunder the Egyptians.

QUESTIONS
GOD TALKS TO MOSES
1. What happened while Moses was caring for the flocks in the desert?
God decided to use Moses to help his people escape from Egypt. One day, Moses was taking care of his father-in-law’s flocks. God appeared to him from inside of a burning bush! Even though the bush was on fire, it did not burn up. Moses went over to see why the bush was not burning up. God called to Moses from inside the bush. “Moses! Moses! Don’t come any closer. Take off your sandals. The place where you are standing is holy ground,” said God. God told Moses that he had heard the cries of the Israelites living in Egypt. God knew that they were being treated badly. God wanted them to live in a special land that he had chosen for them. Then God said, “I am sending you, Moses, to Pharaoh to bring the Israelites out of Egypt. I will be with you.” God told Moses to talk to the elders of Israel. They would listen to him. God also told Moses that Pharaoh would not let the Israelites go easily. Ten bad things would have to happen to the Egyptians before Pharaoh would let the Israelites leave Egypt. For additional details about this story, please read Exodus 3:1-22 in your Bible.

Bricks Without Straw Exodus 5:1-21 Exodus 5 1 Afterward Moses and Aaron went to Pharaoh and said, “This is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: ‘Let my people go, so that they may hold a festival to me in the desert.’” 2 Pharaoh said, “Who is the LORD, that I should obey him and let Israel go? I do not know the LORD and I will not let Israel go.” 3 Then they said, “The God of the Hebrews has met with us. Now let us take a three-day journey into the desert to offer sacrifices to the LORD our God, or he may strike us with plagues or with the sword.” 4 But the king of Egypt said, “Moses and Aaron, why are you taking the people away from their labor? Get back to your work!” 5Then Pharaoh said, “Look, the people of the land are now numerous, and you are stopping them from working.” 6 That same day Pharaoh gave this order to the slave drivers and foremen in charge of the people: 7“You are no longer to supply the people with straw for making bricks; let them go and gather their own straw. 8But require them to make the same number of bricks as before; don’t reduce the quota. They are lazy; that is why they are crying out, ‘Let us go and sacrifice to our God.’ 9Make the work harder for the men so that they keep working and pay no attention to lies.” 10 Then the slave drivers and the foremen went out and said to the people, “This is what Pharaoh says: ‘I will not give you any more straw. 11Go and get your
own straw wherever you can find it, but your work will not be reduced at all.’” 12So the people scattered all over Egypt to gather stubble to use for straw. 13The slave drivers kept pressing them, saying, “Complete the work required of you for each day, just as when you had straw.” 14 The Israelite foremen appointed by Pharaoh’s slave drivers were beaten and were asked, “Why didn’t you meet your quota of bricks yesterday or today, as before?” 15 Then the Israelite foremen went and appealed to Pharaoh: “Why have you treated your servants this way? 16Your servants are given no straw, yet we are told, ‘Make bricks!’ Your servants are being beaten, but the fault is with your own people.” 17 Pharaoh said, “Lazy, that’s what you are—lazy! That is why you keep saying, ‘Let us go and sacrifice to the LORD.’ 18 Now get to work. You will not be given any straw, yet you must produce your full quota of bricks.” 19 The Israelite foremen realized they were in trouble when they were told, “You are not to reduce the number of bricks required of you for each day.” 20When they left Pharaoh, they found Moses and Aaron waiting to meet them, 21and they said, “May the LORD look upon you and judge you! You have made us a stench to Pharaoh and his officials and have put a sword in their hand to kill us.” Page 81 of 133

BRICKS WITHOUT STRAW God spoke to Moses from a burning bush. God wanted Moses to talk to Pharaoh, king of Egypt. God heard the cries of the Israelites who were living as slaves in Egypt. Moses and Aaron went to Pharaoh and said, “Let my people go so the may hold a festival to the Lord in the desert.” Pharaoh said, “I do not know the Lord and I will not let them go. You are keeping the people from doing their work. Get back to work!” Pharaoh was angry and ordered the people to work even harder. Pharaoh told his slave drivers to make the people find their own straw to make bricks with. But the Israelites still had to make the same number of bricks as they did before. The Israelite foremen were beaten. The Israelites were unable to make the same number of bricks as they had before. The foremen complained to Pharaoh, but he said they were just lazy. The foremen were upset with Moses and Aaron for making Pharaoh angry. To find out more, read Exodus 5:1-21 in your Bible.

Is this why you sent me? 23Ever since I went to Pharaoh to speak in your name, he has brought trouble upon this people, and you have not rescued your people at all.” Exodus 6 1 Then the LORD said to Moses, “Now you will see what I will do to Pharaoh: Because of my mighty hand he will let them go; because of my mighty hand he will drive them out of his country.” 2 God also said to Moses, “I am the LORD. 3I appeared to Abraham, to Isaac and to Jacob as God Almighty, but by my name the LORD I did not make myself known to them. 4I also established my covenant with them to give them the land of Canaan, where they lived as aliens. 5Moreover, I have heard the groaning of the Israelites, whom the Egyptians are enslaving, and I have remembered my covenant. 6 “Therefore, say to the Israelites: ‘I am the LORD, and I will bring you out from under the yoke of the Egyptians. I will free you from being slaves to them, and I will redeem you
with an outstretched arm and with mighty acts of judgment. 7I will take you as my own people, and I will be your God. Then you will know that I am the LORD your God, who brought you out from under the yoke of the Egyptians. 8And I will bring you to the land I swore with uplifted hand to give to Abraham, to Isaac and to Jacob. I will give it to you as a possession. I am the LORD.’” 9 Moses reported this to the Israelites, but they did not listen to him because of their discouragement and cruel bondage. 10 Then the LORD said to Moses, 11 “Go, tell Pharaoh king of Egypt to let the Israelites go out of his country.” 12 But Moses said to the LORD, “If the Israelites will not listen to me, why would Pharaoh listen to me, since I speak with faltering lips?”

GOD PROMISES DELIVERANCE
1. What made Pharaoh upset?
Moses told Pharaoh, “Let my people go.” This upset Pharaoh and he made the Israelites work even harder than they had before. Moses complained to the Lord, “Ever since I talked with Pharaoh, he has brought trouble to my people.” The Lord said to Moses, “Now you will see what I will do to Pharaoh. He will let the Israelites leave Egypt because of me. I have heard my people’s complaints.” The Lord told Moses to tell the Israelites that God would bring them out of Egypt. The Israelites would live in a special land that was chosen for them by God. Moses told the Israelites what the Lord had said. The Israelites did not believe Moses because of all the trouble they were in with Pharaoh. Pharaoh made them work as slaves making bricks. Then the Lord said to Moses, “Tell Pharaoh to let the Israelites leave Egypt.” But Moses said to the Lord, “If Israelites won’t listen to me, why would Pharaoh?” For more details, please read Exodus 5:22-6:12 in the Bible.

The Passover Exodus 12:1-30 Exodus 12 1 The LORD said to Moses and Aaron in Egypt, 2 “This month is to be for you the first month, the first month of your year. 3Tell the whole community of Israel that on the tenth day of this month each man is to take a lamb for his family, one for each household. 4 If any household is too small for a whole lamb, they must share one with their nearest neighbor, having taken into account the number of people there are. You are to determine the amount of lamb needed in accordance with what each person will eat. 5The animals you choose must be year-old males without defect, and you may take them from the sheep or the goats. 6Take care of them until the fourteenth day of the month, when all the people of the community of Israel must slaughter them at twilight. 7Then they are to take some of the blood and put it on the sides and tops of the doorframes of the houses where they eat the lambs. 8That same night they are to eat the meat roasted over the fire, along with bitter herbs, and bread made without yeast. 9Do not eat the meat raw or cooked in water, but roast it over the fire—head, legs and inner parts. 10Do not leave any of it till morning; if some is left till morning, you must burn it. 11This is how you are to eat it: with your cloak tucked into your belt, your sandals on your feet and your staff in your hand. Eat it in haste; it is the LORD’S Passover. 12 “On that same night I will pass through Egypt and strike down every firstborn—both men and animals—and I will bring judgment on all the gods of Egypt. I am the LORD. 13The blood will be a sign for you on the houses where you are; and when I see the blood, I will pass over you. No destructive plague will touch you when I strike Egypt. 14 “This is a day you are to commemorate; for the generations to come you shall celebrate it as a festival to the LORD—a lasting ordinance. 15For seven days you are to eat bread made without yeast. On the first day remove the yeast from your houses, for whoever eats anything with yeast in it from the first day through the seventh must be cut off from Israel. 16On the first day hold a sacred assembly, and another one on the seventh day. Do no work at all on these days, except to prepare food for everyone to eat—that is all you may do.
“Celebrate the Feast of Unleavened Bread, because it was on this very day that I brought your divisions out of Egypt. Celebrate this day as a lasting ordinance for the generations to come. 18In the first month you are to eat bread made without yeast, from the evening of the fourteenth day until the evening of the twenty-first day. 19For seven days no yeast is to be found in your houses. And whoever eats anything with yeast in it must be cut off from the community of Israel, whether he is an alien or native-born. 20Eat nothing made with yeast. Wherever you live, you must eat unleavened bread.” 21 Then Moses summoned all the elders of Israel and said to them, “Go at once and select the animals for your families and slaughter the Passover lamb. 22 Take a bunch of hyssop, dip it into the blood in the basin and put some of the blood on the top and on both sides of the doorframe. Not one of you shall go out the door of his house until morning. 23When the LORD goes through the land to strike down the Egyptians, he will see the blood on the top and sides of the doorframe and will pass over that doorway, and he will not permit the destroyer to enter your houses and strike you down. 24 “Obey these instructions as a lasting ordinance for you and your descendants. 25When you enter the land that the LORD will give you as he promised, observe this ceremony. 26And when your children ask you, ‘What does this ceremony mean to you?’ 27then tell them, ‘It is the Passover sacrifice to the LORD, who passed over the houses of the Israelites in Egypt and spared our homes when he struck down the Egyptians.’” Then the people bowed down and worshiped. 28The Israelites did just what the LORD commanded Moses and Aaron. 29 At midnight the LORD struck down all the firstborn in Egypt, from the firstborn of Pharaoh, who sat on the throne, to the firstborn of the prisoner, who was in the dungeon, and the firstborn of all the livestock as well. 30Pharaoh and all his officials and all the Egyptians got up during the night, and there was loud wailing in Egypt, for there was not a house without someone dead. 17

QUESTIONS
THE PASSOVER God’s people, the Israelites, were still in Egypt. God made bad things happen to the Egyptians so that Pharaoh would let his people go. The Lord told Moses and Aaron to have the Israelites kill perfect lambs. Then they were to smear the blood on the sides and the top of their doorframes. That same night, they were to roast the meat and eat it. They were also to bake bread without yeast. They were to be dressed and ready to leave at any time. During the night, the Lord would kill every firstborn – both men and animals. The Lord would see the blood on the doorframes of the Israelites and pass over their homes. None of their firstborn would die. But the Egyptians’ firstborn men and animals would die because they would not have blood on their doorframes. There was much crying when the Egyptians saw their firstborn animals and men dead. This got Pharaoh’s attention. He was now ready to let God’s people leave Egypt. For more details, please read Exodus 12:1-30 in your Bible.

31
During the night Pharaoh summoned Moses and Aaron and said, “Up! Leave my people, you and the Israelites! Go, worship the LORD as you have requested. 32 Take your flocks and herds, as you have said, and go. And also bless me.” 33 The Egyptians urged the people to hurry and leave the country. “For otherwise,” they said, “we will all die!” 34So the people took their dough before the yeast was added, and carried it on their shoulders in kneading troughs wrapped in clothing. 35 The Israelites did as Moses instructed and asked the Egyptians for articles of silver and gold and for clothing. 36The LORD had made the Egyptians favorably disposed toward the people, and they gave them what they asked for; so they plundered the Egyptians. 37 The Israelites journeyed from Rameses to Succoth. There were about six hundred thousand men
on foot, besides women and children. 38Many other people went up with them, as well as large droves of livestock, both flocks and herds. 39With the dough they had brought from Egypt, they baked cakes of unleavened bread. The dough was without yeast because they had been driven out of Egypt and did not have time to prepare food for themselves. 40 Now the length of time the Israelite people lived in Egypt was 430 years. 41At the end of the 430 years, to the very day, all the LORD’S divisions left Egypt. 42 Because the LORD kept vigil that night to bring them out of Egypt, on this night all the Israelites are to keep vigil to honor the LORD for the generations to come.

MOSES LEADS THE PEOPLE OUT OF EGYPT The Israelites had been slaves in Egypt for 430 years. Ten plagues, or bad things, came upon the Egyptians. The last plague was death to every firstborn Egyptian male. Even Pharaoh’s own son died! Finally, Pharaoh was ready to let the Israelites go into the desert to worship God. Pharaoh said to Moses and Aaron, “Leave my people. Go worship the Lord. Take your flocks and herds with you. And also bless me.” The Israelites were in such a hurry to leave Egypt, that they didn’t even have time to finish baking their bread. They had to take the dough with them. Moses told the Israelites to take gold, silver, and clothing from the Egyptians. The Egyptians wanted the Israelites to leave their country. They were afraid that other bad things might happen to them if the Israelites stayed. There were more than six hundred thousand men who left Egypt that night. That is not even counting the women and children! The Israelites also took their animals with them into the desert. For more details, please read Exodus 12:31-42 in the Bible.

Moses and the Israelites cross through the Red Sea and out of Egypt Page 104 of 133
Through the Red Sea Exodus 14:1-31 Exodus 14 1 Then the LORD said to Moses, 2“Tell the Israelites to turn back and encamp near Pi Hahiroth, between Migdol and the sea. They are to encamp by the sea, directly opposite Baal Zephon. 3Pharaoh will think, ‘The Israelites are wandering around the land in confusion, hemmed in by the desert.’ 4And I will harden Pharaoh’s heart, and he will pursue them. But I will gain glory for myself through Pharaoh and all his army, and the Egyptians will know that I am the LORD.” So the Israelites did this. 5 When the king of Egypt was told that the people had fled, Pharaoh and his officials changed their minds about them and said, “What have we done? We have let the Israelites go and have lost their services!” 6So he had his chariot made ready and took his army with him. 7He took six hundred of the best chariots, along with all the other chariots of Egypt, with officers over all of them. 8The LORD hardened the heart of Pharaoh king of Egypt, so that he pursued the Israelites, who were marching out boldly. 9The Egyptians—all Pharaoh’s horses and chariots, horsemen and troops— pursued the Israelites and overtook them as they camped by the sea near Pi Hahiroth, opposite Baal Zephon. 10 As Pharaoh approached, the Israelites looked up, and there were the Egyptians, marching after them. They were terrified and cried out to the LORD. 11They said to Moses, “Was it because there were no graves in Egypt that you brought us to the desert to die? What have you done to us by bringing us out of Egypt? 12 Didn’t we say to you in Egypt, ‘Leave us alone; let us serve the Egyptians’? It would have been better for us to serve the Egyptians than to die in the desert!” 13 Moses answered the people, “Do not be afraid. Stand firm and you will see the deliverance the LORD will bring you today. The Egyptians you see today you will never see again. 14The LORD will fight for you; you need only to be still.” 15 Then the LORD said to Moses, “Why are you crying out to me? Tell the Israelites to move on. 16 Raise your staff and stretch out your hand over the sea to divide the water so that the Israelites can go through the sea on dry ground. 17I will harden the hearts of the Egyptians so that they will go in after them. And I will gain glory through Pharaoh and all
his army, through his chariots and his horsemen. 18The Egyptians will know that I am the LORD when I gain glory through Pharaoh, his chariots and his horsemen.” 19 Then the angel of God, who had been traveling in front of Israel’s army, withdrew and went behind them. The pillar of cloud also moved from in front and stood behind them, 20coming between the armies of Egypt and Israel. Throughout the night the cloud brought darkness to the one side and light to the other side; so neither went near the other all night long. 21 Then Moses stretched out his hand over the sea, and all that night the LORD drove the sea back with a strong east wind and turned it into dry land. The waters were divided, 22and the Israelites went through the sea on dry ground, with a wall of water on their right and on their left. 23 The Egyptians pursued them, and all Pharaoh’s horses and chariots and horsemen followed them into the sea. 24During the last watch of the night the LORD looked down from the pillar of fire and cloud at the Egyptian army and threw it into confusion. 25He made the wheels of their chariots come off so that they had difficulty driving. And the Egyptians said, “Let’s get away from the Israelites! The LORD is fighting for them against Egypt.” 26 Then the LORD said to Moses, “Stretch out your hand over the sea so that the waters may flow back over the Egyptians and their chariots and horsemen.” 27 Moses stretched out his hand over the sea, and at daybreak the sea went back to its place. The Egyptians were fleeing toward it, and the LORD swept them into the sea. 28The water flowed back and covered the chariots and horsemen—the entire army of Pharaoh that had followed the Israelites into the sea. Not one of them survived. 29 But the Israelites went through the sea on dry ground, with a wall of water on their right and on their left. 30That day the LORD saved Israel from the hands of the Egyptians, and Israel saw the Egyptians lying dead on the shore. 31And when the Israelites saw the great power the LORD displayed against the Egyptians, the people feared the LORD and put their trust in him and in Moses his servant.

QUESTIONS
THROUGH THE RED SEA The Israelites were finally free from being slaves in Egypt. The Lord told Moses to have the Israelites camp by the Red Sea. The Lord warned Moses that Pharaoh would come after the Israelites, but that the Israelites would not be harmed. Pharaoh chased after the Israelites with more than 600 chariots. Pharaoh didn’t want to loose the Israelites as slaves. The Israelites saw the Egyptians getting closer and closer. The Israelites started to complain to Moses, “Why did you bring us out to the desert to die?” The Lord told Moses to raise up his staff and stretch out his hand over the sea to divide the water. Moses obeyed and the water divided. The Israelites crossed through the Red Sea on dry ground. The Egyptians followed the Israelites into the middle of the Rea Sea. When the Israelites were safely across the river, Moses stretched out his hand over the sea. The Egyptians were still crossing the sea when the walls of water crashed down on them. The Egyptians drowned in the Red Sea. They all died! The Israelites feared the Lord and put their trust in him and in Moses. For more details, please read Exodus 14:1-31 in the Bible.

Bitter Water Turns Sweet Exodus 15:22-27 Exodus 15 22
Then Moses led Israel from the Red Sea and they went into the Desert of Shur. For three days they traveled in the desert without finding water. 23 When they came to Marah, they could not drink its water because it was bitter. (That is why the place is called Marah.) 24 So the people grumbled against Moses, saying, “What are we to drink?” 25 Then Moses cried out to the LORD, and the LORD showed him a piece of wood. He threw it into the water, and the water became sweet. There the LORD made a decree and a law for them,
and there he tested them. 26 He said, “If you listen carefully to the voice of the LORD your God and do what is right in his eyes, if you pay attention to his commands and keep all his decrees, I will not bring on you any of the diseases I brought on the Egyptians, for I am the LORD, who heals you.” 27 Then they came to Elim, where there were twelve springs and seventy palm trees, and they camped there near the water.

God Gives Manna To Eat Exodus 16:1-36 Exodus 16 1
The whole Israelite community set out from Elim and came to the Desert of Sin, which is between Elim and Sinai, on the fifteenth day of the second month after they had come out of Egypt. 2In the desert the whole community grumbled against Moses and Aaron. 3The Israelites said to them, “If only we had died by the LORD’S hand in Egypt! There we sat around pots of meat and ate all the food we wanted, but you have brought us out into this desert to starve this entire assembly to death.” 4 Then the LORD said to Moses, “I will rain down bread from heaven for you. The people are to go out each day and gather enough for that day. In this way I will test them and see whether they will follow my instructions. 5On the sixth day they are to prepare what they bring in, and that is to be twice as much as they gather on the other days.” 6 So Moses and Aaron said to all the Israelites, “In the evening you will know that it was the LORD who brought you out of Egypt, 7and in the morning you will see the glory of the LORD, because he has heard your grumbling against him. Who are we, that you should grumble against us?” 8 Moses also said, “You will know that it was the LORD when he gives you meat to eat in the evening and all the bread you want in the morning, because he has heard your grumbling against him. Who are we? You are not grumbling against us, but against the LORD.” 9 Then Moses told Aaron, “Say to the entire Israelite community, ‘Come before the LORD, for he has heard your grumbling.’” 10 While Aaron was speaking to the whole Israelite community, they looked toward the desert, and there was the glory of the LORD appearing in the cloud. 11 The LORD said to Moses, 12“I have heard the grumbling of the Israelites. Tell them, ‘At twilight you will eat meat, and in the morning you will be filled with bread. Then you will know that I am the LORD your God.’” 13 That evening quail came and covered the camp, and in the morning there was a layer of dew around the camp. 14 When the dew was gone, thin flakes like frost on the ground appeared on the desert floor. 15When the Israelites saw it, they said to each other, “What is it?” For they did not know what it was. Moses said to them, “It is the bread the LORD has given you to eat. 16This is what the LORD has commanded: ‘Each one is to gather as much as he needs. Take an omer for each person you have in your tent.’” 17 The Israelites did as they were told; some gathered much, some little. 18And when they measured it by the omer, he who gathered much did not have too much, and he who gathered little did not have too little. Each one gathered as much as he needed.
19
Then Moses said to them, “No one is to keep any of it until morning.” 20 However, some of them paid no attention to Moses; they kept part of it until morning, but it was full of maggots and began to smell. So Moses was angry with them. 21 Each morning everyone gathered as much as he needed, and when the sun grew hot, it melted away. 22On the sixth day, they gathered twice as much—two omers for each person—and the leaders of the community came and reported this to Moses. 23He said to them, “This is what the LORD commanded: ‘Tomorrow is to be a day of rest, a holy Sabbath to the LORD. So bake what you want to bake and boil what you want to boil. Save whatever is left and keep it until morning.’” 24 So they saved it until morning, as Moses commanded, and it did not stink or get maggots in it. 25“Eat it today,” Moses said, “because today is a Sabbath to the LORD. You will not find any of it on the ground today. 26Six days you are to gather it, but on the seventh day, the Sabbath, there will not be any.” 27 Nevertheless, some of the people went out on the seventh day to gather it, but they found none. 28Then the LORD said to Moses, “How long will you refuse to keep my commands and my instructions? 29Bear in mind that the LORD has given you the Sabbath; that is why on the sixth day he gives you bread for two days. Everyone is to stay where he is on the seventh day; no one is to go out.” 30So the people rested on the seventh day. 31 The people of Israel called the bread manna. It was white like coriander seed and tasted like wafers made with honey. 32Moses said, “This is what the LORD has commanded: ‘Take an omer of manna and keep it for the generations to come, so they can see the bread I gave you to eat in the desert when I brought you out of Egypt.’” 33 So Moses said to Aaron, “Take a jar and put an omer of manna in it. Then place it before the LORD to be kept for the generations to come.” 34 As the LORD commanded Moses, Aaron put the manna in front of the Testimony, that it might be kept. 35The Israelites ate manna forty years, until they came to a land that was settled; they ate manna until they reached the border of Canaan. 36

God used Moses to lead the Israelites out of Egypt where they were slaves. The people complained about not having any water and God provided water. Next, the Israelites complained that they didn’t have anything to eat. The Lord said to Moses, “I will rain down bread from heaven for you. Each morning the people may gather as much bread as they need for that day. On the sixth day, they are to gather twice as much bread as they would on normal days. No manna would come from heaven on the Sabbath (the day of rest). In the evenings I will give them quail to eat.” Moses told the Israelites, “No one is to keep any manna until the next morning.” Some people did not listen and the manna went bad by morning. God wanted to test the Israelites to see if they would obey. The manna was white and tasted like wafers made with honey. Moses told Aaron to keep some manna in a jar and save it to show people in the future. The people would see how God provided manna to eat in the desert. The Israelites ate manna for 40 years. Water From a Rock Exodus 17:1-7 Exodus 17 1
The whole Israelite community set out from the Desert of Sin, traveling from place to place as the LORD commanded. They camped at Rephidim, but there was no water for the people to drink. 2So they quarreled with Moses and said, “Give us water to drink.” Moses replied, “Why do you quarrel with me? Why do you put the LORD to the test?” 3 But the people were thirsty for water there, and they grumbled against Moses. They said, “Why did you bring us up out of Egypt to make us and our children and livestock die of thirst?” 4 Then Moses cried out to the LORD, “What am I to do with these people? They
are almost ready to stone me.” 5 The LORD answered Moses, “Walk on ahead of the people. Take with you some of the elders of Israel and take in your hand the staff with which you struck the Nile, and go. 6I will stand there before you by the rock at Horeb. Strike the rock, and water will come out of it for the people to drink.” So Moses did this in the sight of the elders of Israel. 7And he called the place Massah and Meribah because the Israelites quarreled and because they tested the LORD saying, “Is the LORD among us or not?”

Moses Holds Up His Hands Exodus 17:8-16 Exodus 17 8
The Amalekites came and attacked the Israelites at Rephidim. 9Moses said to Joshua, “Choose some of our men and go out to fight the Amalekites. Tomorrow I will stand on top of the hill with the staff of God in my hands.” 10 So Joshua fought the Amalekites as Moses had ordered, and Moses, Aaron and Hur went to the top of the hill. 11As long as Moses held up his hands, the Israelites were winning, but whenever he lowered his hands, the Amalekites were winning. 12When Moses’ hands grew tired, they took a stone and put it under him and he sat on it. Aaron and Hur held his hands up—one on one side, one on the
other—so that his hands remained steady till sunset. 13 So Joshua overcame the Amalekite army with the sword. 14 Then the LORD said to Moses, “Write this on a scroll as something to be remembered and make sure that Joshua hears it, because I will completely blot out the memory of Amalek from under heaven.” 15 Moses built an altar and called it The LORD is my Banner. 16He said, “For hands were lifted up to the throne of the LORD. TheLORD will be at war against the Amalekites from generation to generation.”

MOSES HOLDS UP HIS HANDS A group of people called the Amalekites came and attacked the Israelites. Moses told Joshua to choose some of the Israelites to fight against the Amalekites. The next day, Moses stood on top of the hill with a staff in his hand. Two other people went with Moses to the top of the hill. Their names were Aaron and Hur. As long as Moses had his hands up, the Israelites were winning the battle. But when Moses lowered his hands, the Amalekites were winning. When Moses got tired of holding up his hands, Aaron and Hur helped. They kept Moses’ hands up so that the Israelites would win. By the time the sun began to set in the evening, the Israelites had won! Then the Lord said to Moses, “Write down what happened on a scroll.” After that, Moses built an altar to the Lord. To find out more, check out Exodus 17:8-16 in your Bible.

Jethro Advises Moses Exodus 18:1-27 Exodus 18 1
Now Jethro, the priest of Midian and fatherin-law of Moses, heard of everything God had done for Moses and for his people Israel, and how the LORD had brought Israel out of Egypt. 2 After Moses had sent away his wife Zipporah, his father-in-law Jethro received her 3 and her two sons. One son was named Gershom, for Moses said, “I have become an alien in a foreign land”; 4and the other was named Eliezer, for he said, “My father’s God was my helper; he saved me from the sword of Pharaoh.” 5 Jethro, Moses’ father-in-law, together with Moses’ sons and wife, came to him in the desert, where he was camped near the mountain of God. 6 Jethro had sent word to him, “I, your father-inlaw Jethro, am coming to you with your wife and her two sons.” 7 So Moses went out to meet his father-in-law and bowed down and kissed him. They greeted each other and then went into the tent. 8Moses told his father-in-law about everything the LORD had done to Pharaoh and the Egyptians for Israel’s sake and about all the hardships they had met along the way and how the LORD had saved them. 9 Jethro was delighted to hear about all the good things the LORD had done for Israel in rescuing them from the hand of the Egyptians. 10 He said, “Praise be to the LORD, who rescued you from the hand of the Egyptians and of Pharaoh, and who rescued the people from the hand of the Egyptians. 11Now I know that the LORD is greater than all other gods, for he did this to those who had treated Israel arrogantly.” 12 Then Jethro, Moses’ father-in-law, brought a burnt offering and other sacrifices to God, and Aaron came with all the elders of Israel to eat bread with Moses’ father-in-law in the presence of God. 13 The next day Moses took his seat to serve as judge for the people, and they stood around him from morning till evening. 14When his father-in-
law saw all that Moses was doing for the people, he said, “What is this you are doing for the people? Why do you alone sit as judge, while all these people stand around you from morning till evening?” 15 Moses answered him, “Because the people come to me to seek God’s will. 16Whenever they have a dispute, it is brought to me, and I decide between the parties and inform them of God’s decrees and laws.” 17 Moses’ father-in-law replied, “What you are doing is not good. 18You and these people who come to you will only wear yourselves out. The work is too heavy for you; you cannot handle it alone. 19Listen now to me and I will give you some advice, and may God be with you. You must be the people’s representative before God and bring their disputes to him. 20Teach them the decrees and laws, and show them the way to live and the duties they are to perform. 21But select capable men from all the people—men who fear God, trustworthy men who hate dishonest gain— and appoint them as officials over thousands, hundreds, fifties and tens. 22Have them serve as judges for the people at all times, but have them bring every difficult case to you; the simple cases they can decide themselves. That will make your load lighter, because they will share it with you. 23 If you do this and God so commands, you will be able to stand the strain, and all these people will go home satisfied.” 24 Moses listened to his father-in-law and did everything he said. 25He chose capable men from all Israel and made them leaders of the people, officials over thousands, hundreds, fifties and tens. 26They served as judges for the people at all times. The difficult cases they brought to Moses, but the simple ones they decided themselves. 27 Then Moses sent his father-in-law on his way, and Jethro returned to his own country.

JETHRO ADVISES MOSES Moses had a father-in-law named Jethro. Jethro had heard of all that the Lord was doing for Moses and the Israelites. One day, Moses was serving as judge for the people of Israel. If the people had a problem, and could not solve it, they came to Moses for help. The people stood around from morning until evening. They were waiting for Moses to help them. Moses decided who was wrong and who was right. Jethro watched as Moses helped all his people. Jethro said to Moses, “This is not good. You will wear yourself out doing this. You should choose other leaders who can serve as judges. Then, if there is something that they cannot handle, they can come to you. That way, you can be the people’s representative before God.” Moses took Jethro’s advice and chose many leaders who could serve as judges. But Moses still helped when a big problem came to his attention. For more on this story, read Exodus 18:1-27 in your Bible.
