INTRODUCTION TO PEDAGOGY A basic understanding of how the mind works is an important part of training. A clarity on how to effectively train the mind, requires an understanding of how God designed it. Memory is designed to fade, and we believe that God has designed the mind that way, to ensure that Man does not dwell on his past but slowly forgets the past, and remains focussed on his life in the present. The amazing thing about the forgetful mind, is that it does not completely forget what we learned in the past, but retains certain things about what we learned in the past.. So the big question is, how can we remember the things that we really want to remember? ު First thing, that you need to know is this. Anything that is well UNDERSTOOD, is retained by the mind, in one form or the other. But how can we make sure that we understood? ު Anything learnt, if we are able to apply, independent of where we learned it, we can conclude, that we have understood it. ު The more you understand what you learnt, the more you can associate and apply it elsewhere. So, try to associate and apply what you have learnt, in another place, and circumstance. ު You can test whether you have understood what you learned, by answering questions, teaching someone and checking whether you got it right. ު Secondly, mind uses 5 senses to understand, things around you. These senses of perception, are sight, sound, taste, smell and touch. ު Sight: Close your eyes and think of your HOUSE. What did you see? You did not see, the letters H-O-U-S-E but your own house. That’s because, this is how the mind stores information. It stores them as pictures, that you saw. Words have no meaning to the mind, unless you associate it with a picture. This is why we many a time, forget people’s name though we recognize their face. Also use your imagination. Imagination is something that will help you remember by creating images(pictures) in your mind. ު Sound: When we hear a song, we are able to recognize the tune, though we may not be able to recollect the lyrics. ު Also, this is why listening to your teacher in class is so important. What teacher says, gets heard and remains etched in the mind. And it requires less effort to remember, than the words you read out of your textbook. ު Listening in class, also helps you understand and remember, what the teacher demonstrated(through sight and imagination). ު All of the above works best, if you associated what you heard(understood),& connected it in your mind(using imagination), while you listened to your teacher. This way, you will notice that your lesson becomes very easy to recollect. ު Taste, Smell and Touch also works the same way, with your mind. Therefore, any training should consist of a systematic teaching style with activities, that involve all of the above. ު Thirdly, all the above, while effective, cannot yield results, unless and until the third pillar of learning is done, systematically. If what is learnt is not revised systematically, it will be forgotten. ު Revise through association: while learning, try to create colorful notes, with pictures on them. We recommend a systematic revision, using personally drawn Mind Maps as notes. ު Regular revision: A time table should be kept for revision. Ideally, the first revision should be done in an hour. And the next within, 24 hours. Third can be within a week, and the next within a month. The last should be within 6 months. Keep developing your Mind Map, every time you revise. Anything revised, over 6 months is likely to stay in your memory for a very long time.

Dear parents… For most parents, their life’s biggest investment, is on their children. Be it their education, health, marriage or future; Meeting these expenses, remains the most important investment, a parent usually makes in his or her lifetime. And usually, Sunday schools and kids church get sidelined, as an option to keep kids busy, while parents relax and get ready for church. If you are one of these parents, THINK AGAIN... you couldn’t be farther from the truth. A good kid’s church might be your best aid to securing your biggest investment(Your Child). Let’s think about a child’s future and, think of some possibilities where their future might lead them… WHAT IF… Your child secured a good education but lost direction and his/her moral compass, and made some wrong choices and ends up in Jail, for crime? [And possibly spend,an eternity in HELL?] WHAT IF… Your child is well settled in life but ends up in a divorce or an extra marital affair, that wrecks his/her family?[And possibly spend,an eternity in HELL?] WHAT IF… You gave your children a lot of love and a good education; they get married and settled in life, and go their way but fail to love you back? Even if they love you back and fulfilled all your dreams, what if they lose their own eternity? God forbid, any of this happens to any of you reading this or your children. We agree, that even a child who knows God and His word, can make wrong choices in life. But a child who knows God, knows his/her way back, even if they took a wrong turn in life. So what’s our solution to ensure your kids get the best in life? We believe, a child who has got a relationship with God and, a moral compass pointed in the right direction, will remain a happy child, and lead a fulfilling life, even if he/she does not manage great success in the present life. The yardstick of success is not education or wealth or talent, but a life secured in God!! We invite you to send your kids to EGMC Kids church. It's not just a Sunday school, but a kids club, where your kids will make friends with other kids, who have the right values; These friendships when nurtured becomes their support system, counsels and aids them to make right choices in life; (A sharp contrast from some of the friends, they find in school and neighborhood, who may lead them astray). Help your child choose the right friends for themselves, and they will resist every peer pressure and stand up for what’s good and whats right.

The Creed - Statement of Faith I believe in one God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, and of all things visible and invisible. And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only begotten Son of God, begotten of the Father before all worlds; God of God, Light of Light, very God of very God; begotten, not made; being of one substance with the Father, by whom all things were made. Who, for us men and for our salvation, came down from heaven, and was incarnate by the Holy Spirit of the Virgin Mary, and was made man; and was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate. He suffered and died and was buried; and the third day He rose again, according to the Scriptures, and ascended into heaven, and sits at the right hand of the Father; and He shall come again, with glory, to judge the living and the dead; whose Kingdom shall have no end. And I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord and Giver of Life; who proceeds from the Father; who with the Father and the Son, together is worshiped and glorified; who spoke by the prophets. And I believe in one, holy and apostolic church. I believe in the Scriptures, confirmed by our Lord Jesus Christ; as the true Word of God, inspired, by the Spirit of God. I acknowledge, one baptism for the remission of sins; in the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit; And I hope for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

What is Salvation? John 3:16 - “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. The simplest definition of salvation is to be delivered (or rescued) from peril/danger. God made Adam and Eve and they sinned. And because they sinned, we all became sinners through them. God sent Jesus Christ to rescue us from the consequence of our sin, and everybody falls into the category of sinner.
Why be Saved? John 3:5 - Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and [of] the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. Though life on earth is temporary, life is eternal and it never ends. The decision we all have to make is whether, we will spend it, either, in hell or heaven. Romans 3:23 - For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God; The real problem is sin and guilt. That's the issue. It doesn't matter whether you're among the haves or the have-nots, whether you have great expectations or none at all, whether you're consumed by your passions or exhibit a degree of self-control and discipline-you are still a sinner. You have broken the law of God and He's angry about it. Unless something happens to change your condition, you're on your way to eternal hell. You need to be rescued from the consequences of your sin.
How Can I be Saved? Romans 10:9-10 - That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. Beauty of salvation is that it is the free of God to mankind and available to all who are willing to accept it and obey His commandments in the Word of God. Repeat the prayer below, earnestly and sincerely from the heart and the Lord will save you.
Prayer of Salvation Father in heaven, I admit that I am a sinner. I have done many things that does not please you. I have lived my life for myself only. I am sorry, and I repent for my ways. I ask you to forgive me all my sins and cleanse me by the blood of your Son, Jesus Christ.. I believe that your Son, Jesus Christ, died on the cross of Calvary for me, to save me and You raised Him up from the dead. You did what I could not do for myself. I come to you now and ask you to take control of my life; I give it to you. From this day forward, You are the Lord of my life and my Saviour. Help me to live every day for you, and in a way that pleases you. I love you, Lord, and I thank you that I will spend all eternity with you. In the name of Jesus Christ I pray, Amen.

Why should I get baptised? Following Christ: In order to understand the reason for being water baptised, it is important to carefully consider what the Bible says about it… Jesus himself was baptised. He was not a sinner, yet he humbled himself in obedience to identify with us and give us an example to follow. At this time, Jesus came from Nazareth in Galilee and was baptised by John in the Jordan. The moment he came out of the water, he saw the sky split open and God’s Spirit, looking like a dove, come down on him. Along with the Spirit, a voice: “You are My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.” Mark 1:9 NKJV An Act of Obedience: Water baptism is an act of faith and obedience to the commands of Christ. 19 Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” Amen. Matthew 28:19-20 NKJV A Public Declaration: Baptism declares that you are a follower of Jesus Christ. It is a public confession of your faith in, and commitment to, Jesus Christ. It is the next step after salvation through repentance and faith and is an important foundation for the Christian life. 15 And He said to them, “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature. 16 He who believes and is baptized will be saved; but he who does not believe will be condemned. Mark 16:15-16 New King James Version (NKJV) What is the meaning and significance of baptism? A Move From Death to Life: Baptism is a symbol of Christ’s burial and resurrection. Our entrance into the water during baptism identifies us with Christ’s death on the cross, His burial in the tomb, and His resurrection from the dead. 12 buried with Him in baptism, in which you also were raised with Him through faith in the working of God, who raised Him from the dead. 13 And you, being dead in your trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh, He has made alive together with Him, having forgiven you all trespasses, 14 having wiped out the [a]handwriting of requirements that was against us, which was contrary to us. And He has taken it out of the way, having nailed it to the cross. Colossians 2:12-14 New King James Version (NKJV)
A Brand New Life: It is a symbol of your new life as a Christian. We bury the ‘old life’ and we rise to walk in a ‘new life’.It is the outward symbol of the commitment you made in your heart, a commitment that has to be followed through and lived out on a daily basis. Here is one simple way to explain baptism: Baptism is a symbol. It’s meant to show the world that that you love, trust, and have put your hope in Christ. If I have trusted Christ to save me from sin, and He is the lord and joy of my life, then I’ll want everyone to know about it. So baptism is a statement to everyone who sees it, that I have trusted Christ for my salvation and I’m committed to living for Him. 17 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new. 2 Corinthians 5:17 New King James Version (NKJV) 4 Therefore we were buried with Him through baptism into death, that just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.Romans 6:4 New King James Version (NKJV) Baptism does not make you a believer; it shows that you already are one! Baptism does not ‘save’ you; only your faith in Christ does that. 8 For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, 9 not of works, lest anyone should boast.” Ephesians 2:8-9 New King James Version (NKJV) A Blessed Life: In baptism, the believer has the triune name of the triune God placed upon them, ‘Father’, ‘Son’ & ‘Holy Spirit’. The name of the Lord Jesus Christ is the name of the Godhead (one God in three persons). The Gospels tell us to baptise believers “… in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,., Matthew 28:19.New King James Version (NKJV) Baptism confirms our position ‘in Christ’ and affirms the blessings of the Father on us as his children. A New family: Baptism, connects us to the ‘body of Christ’, his people in the earth. In baptism there is a real sense of being joined with other believers, not just participating in an individual act of our own spiritual journey. 13 For by one Spirit we were all baptized into one body—whether Jews or Greeks, whether slaves or free—and have all been made to drink into one Spirit. 1 Corinthians 12:12-13 New King James Version (NKJV)
How are we to be baptised? As per the example of Jesus – by being immersed in water. The word “baptise” comes from the Greek word “baptise” which means “to immerse or dip under water”. 16 When He had been baptized, Jesus came up immediately from the water; Matthew 3:16.New King James Version (NKJV) Every baptism in the Bible was by immersion under water. The book of Acts shows us that this was the norm for every believer. 38 So he commanded the chariot to stand still. And both Philip and the eunuch went down into the water, and he baptized him. 39 Now when they came up out of the water,.... Acts 8:38-39 New King James Version (NKJV) Who should be baptised? Every person who has made the decision to believe in Christ. When Paul writes to the believers in Rome, he assumes that all of them have been baptized (Romans 6). The one requirement for baptism is belief in Christ! 41 Then those who gladly received his word were baptized; and that day about three thousand souls were added to them. Acts 2:41.New King James Version (NKJV) “But when they believed Philip as he preached the good news of the kingdom of God and the name of Jesus Christ, they were baptised, both men and women.” Acts 8:12. We believe in baptising children when they are old enough to understand what it means and make a personal declaration of belief. (Usually, the age of 12 years old is sometimes a good benchmark.) When are we to be baptised? Believers in the New Testament were baptised the same day. As soon as a person decides to believe in Christ, he can be, and is encouraged to be baptised. 41 Then those who gladly received his word were baptized; and that day about three thousand souls were added to them. Acts 2:41.New King James Version (NKJV). 35 Then Philip opened his mouth, and beginning at this Scripture, preached Jesus to him. 36 Now as they went down the road, they came to some water. And the eunuch said, “See, here is water. What hinders me from being baptized?” 37 Then Philip said, “If you believe with all your heart, you may.” And he answered and said, “I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God.” 38 So he commanded the chariot to stand still. And both Philip and the eunuch went down into the water, and he baptized him. 39 Now when they came up out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord caught Philip away, so that the eunuch saw him no more; and he went on his way rejoicing.” Acts 8:35-39.New King James Version (NKJV).

STUDY GUIDE WHY SHOULD I STUDY GOD’s WORD? God’s Words are in the Bible. This is the most important subject you will ever learn. All that you study in school and life, ends with this life. What you study here, stays with you in this life and in the next, all throughout eternity. The Bible contains the mind of God, the state of man, the way of salvation, the doom of sinners, and the happiness of believers. Its doctrines are holy, its precepts are binding, its histories are true, and its decisions are immutable. Read it to be wise, believe it to be safe, and practice it to be holy. It contains light to direct you, food to support you, and comfort to cheer you. It is the traveler’s map, the pilgrim’s staff, the pilot’s compass, the soldier’s sword and the Christian’s charter. Here too, Heaven is opened and the gates of Hell disclosed. Christ is its grand subject, our good its design, and the glory of God its end. It should fill the memory, rule the heart and guide the feet. Read it slowly, frequently and prayerfully. It is a mine of wealth, a paradise of glory, and a river of pleasure. It is given you in life, will be opened at the judgment, and be remembered forever. It involves the highest responsibility, rewards the greatest labor, and will condemn all who trifle with its sacred contents.
HOW SHOULD I STUDY? Your school textbooks change and the information keeps changing as new things come along. God’s word does not change. God’s word has been written with you and your life in mind. It will speak to you. ު

Behold He comes, riding on the clouds, Shining like the sun, at the trumpet call; Lift your voice, it's the year of jubilee, Out of Zion's hill salvation comes. These are the days of Ezekiel, The dry bones becoming as flesh; And these are the days of Your servant David, Rebuilding the temple of praise. These are the days of the harvest, The fields are as white in the world, And we are the laborers in the vineyard, Declaring the word of the Lord. There's no one like Jehovah !!...(X4) 25. 31. Beautiful Lord, wonderful Savior I know for sure all of my days are held in Your hand And crafted into Your perfect plan You gently called me into Your presence Guiding me by Your Holy Spirit Teach me dear Lord, to live all of my life Through Your eyes And I'm captured by Your Holy calling Set me apart, I know You're drawing me to Yourself Lead me Lord, I pray Take me and mold me, use me, fill me I give my life to the Potter's hand Call me, You guide me, lead me, walk beside me I give my life to the Potter's hand You gently call me into Your presence Guiding me by Your Holy Spirit Teach me dear Lord, to live all of my life Through Your eyes I'm captured by Your Holy calling Set me apart, I know You're drawing me to Yourself Lead me Lord, I pray Take me and mold me, use me, fill me I give my life to my Potter's hand Call me, guide me, lead me, walk beside me I give my life to the Potter's hand Take me and mold me, use me, fill me I give my life to the Potter's hand Call me, guide me, lead me, walk beside me I give my life to the Potter's hand 32. When you're up against a wall And your mountain seems so tall And you realize that life's not always fair You can run away and hide Let the old man decide Or you can change your circumstances with a prayer When everything falls apart Praise his name When you have a broken heart Just raise your hands and say Lord, you're all I need You're everything to me And he'll take the pain away When you feel you're all alone Praise his name And you feel all hope is gone Just raise your hands and say Greater is he that is within me And you can praise the hurt away If you'll just praise his name Ohhh, You can overcome By the blood of the lamb And by the word of your testimony You'll see the darkness go As your faith begins to grow You're not alone, so how can you be lonely
33. We are here to praise You Lift our hearts and sing We are here to give You The best that we can bring And it is our love Rising from our heart Everything within us cries Abba Father. Help us now to give You Pleasure and delight Heart and mind and will that say, I love You, Lord.
34. In the darkness, where ev'rything is unknown, I faced the power of sin on my own. I did not know of the place I could go, where I could find a way to heal my wounded soul. He said that I could come into His presence without fear, into the holy place where His mercy hovers near. I'm running, I'm running, I'm running to the mercy seat where Jesus is calling. His grace will be my covering, His blood will flow freely, it will provide my healing. I'm running to the mercy seat. Are you living where hope has not been? Lost in the curse of a lifetime of sin? Lovely illusions, they never come true, But I know where there's a place of mercy for you. He said that you could come into His presence without fear, into the holy place where His mercy hovers near. Come running, come running, come running to the mercy seat where Jesus is calling, His grace will be your covering. His blood will flow freely, it will provide your healing. Come running to the mercy seat. He said that I could come into His presence without fear, into the holy place where His mercy hovers near. I'm running, I'm running, I'm running to the mercy seat where Jesus is calling, His grace will be my covering. His blood will flow freely, it will provide my healing. I'm running to the mercy seat. I'm running to the mercy seat. Come running to the mercy seat. I'm running to the mercy seat. Page 17 of 143

38.There is no problem too big God cannot solve it There is no mountain too tall God cannot move it There is no storm too dark God cannot calm it There is no sorrow too deep He cannot soothe it Oh, if He carried the weight of the world upon His shoulders I know my brother that He will carry you Oh, if He carried the weight of the world upon His shoulders I know my sister that He will carry you He said, "Come on to me all who are weary And I will give you rest…(rest, rest, rest" rest, rest, rest) Oh, if He carried the weight of the world upon His shoulders Oh, I know my brother that He will carry you Oh, if He carried the weight of the world upon His shoulders Oh, I know my sister that He will carry you I know my brother and I know my sister that Jesus will carry you
39 .In Christ alone my hope is found He is my light, my strength, my song This cornerstone, this solid ground, Firm through the fiercest drought and storm. What heights of love, what depths of peace, When fears are stilled, when strivings cease! My comforter, my all in all Here in the love of Christ I stand. In Christ alone, Who took on flesh, Fullness of God in helpless babe! This gift of love and righteousness, Scorned by the ones He came to save. 'Til on that cross as Jesus died, The wrath of God was satisfied For ev'ry sin on Him was laid Here in the death of Christ I live. There in the ground His body lay, Light of the world by darkness slain Then bursting forth in glorious day, Up from the grave He rose again! And as He stands in victory, Sin's curse has lost its grip on me For I am His and He is mine Bought with the precious blood of Christ. No guilt in life, no fear in death This is the pow'r of Christ in me From life's first cry to final breath, Jesus commands my destiny. No pow'r of hell, no scheme of man, Can ever pluck me from His hand 'Til He returns or calls me home Here in the pow'r of Christ I'll stand. ϰϬ͘ ǀĞƌLJŽŶĞ ŶĞĞĚƐ ĐŽŵƉĂƐƐŝŽŶ͕ ǀĞƌLJŽŶĞ ŶĞĞĚƐ ĐŽŵƉĂƐƐŝŽŶ͕ >ŽǀĞ ƚŚĂƚΖƐ ŶĞǀĞƌ ĨĂŝůŝŶŐ͖ >Ğƚ ŵĞƌĐLJ ĨĂůů ŽŶ ŵĞ͘ ǀĞƌLJŽŶĞ ŶĞĞĚƐ ĨŽƌŐŝǀĞŶĞƐƐ͕ dŚĞ ŬŝŶĚŶĞƐƐ ŽĨ Ă ^ĂǀŝŽƵƌ͖ dŚĞ ,ŽƉĞ ŽĨ ŶĂƚŝŽŶƐ͘ ^ĂǀŝŽƵƌ͕ ,Ğ ĐĂŶ ŵŽǀĞ ƚŚĞ ŵŽƵŶƚĂŝŶƐ͕ DLJ 'ŽĚ ŝƐ DŝŐŚƚLJ ƚŽ ƐĂǀĞ͕ ,Ğ ŝƐ DŝŐŚƚLJ ƚŽ ƐĂǀĞ͘ &ŽƌĞǀĞƌ͕ ƵƚŚŽƌ ŽĨ ƐĂůǀĂƚŝŽŶ͕ ,Ğ ƌŽƐĞ ĂŶĚ ĐŽŶƋƵĞƌĞĚ ƚŚĞ ŐƌĂǀĞ͕ :ĞƐƵƐ ĐŽŶƋƵĞƌĞĚ ƚŚĞ ŐƌĂǀĞ͘ ^Ž ƚĂŬĞ ŵĞ ĂƐ zŽƵ ĨŝŶĚ ŵĞ͕ ůů ŵLJ ĨĞĂƌƐ ĂŶĚ ĨĂŝůƵƌĞƐ͕ &ŝůů ŵLJ ůŝĨĞ ĂŐĂŝŶ͘ / ŐŝǀĞ ŵLJ ůŝĨĞ ƚŽ ĨŽůůŽǁ ǀĞƌLJƚŚŝŶŐ / ďĞůŝĞǀĞ ŝŶ͕ EŽǁ / ƐƵƌƌĞŶĚĞƌ͘ DLJ ^ĂǀŝŽƵƌ͕ ,Ğ ĐĂŶ ŵŽǀĞ ƚŚĞ ŵŽƵŶƚĂŝŶƐ͕ DLJ 'ŽĚ ŝƐ DŝŐŚƚLJ ƚŽ ƐĂǀĞ͕ ,Ğ ŝƐ DŝŐŚƚLJ ƚŽ ƐĂǀĞ͘ &ŽƌĞǀĞƌ͕ ƵƚŚŽƌ ŽĨ ƐĂůǀĂƚŝŽŶ͕ ,Ğ ƌŽƐĞ ĂŶĚ ĐŽŶƋƵĞƌĞĚ ƚŚĞ ŐƌĂǀĞ͕ :ĞƐƵƐ ĐŽŶƋƵĞƌĞĚ ƚŚĞ ŐƌĂǀĞ͘ ^ŚŝŶĞ LJŽƵƌ ůŝŐŚƚ ĂŶĚ ůĞƚ ƚŚĞ ǁŚŽůĞ ǁŽƌůĚ ƐĞĞ͕ tĞΖƌĞ ƐŝŶŐŝŶŐ ĨŽƌ ƚŚĞ ŐůŽƌLJ ŽĨ ƚŚĞ ƌŝƐĞŶ <ŝŶŐ͘͘͘:ĞƐƵƐ ;džϮͿ DLJ ^ĂǀŝŽƵƌ͕ ,Ğ ĐĂŶ ŵŽǀĞ ƚŚĞ ŵŽƵŶƚĂŝŶƐ͕ DLJ 'ŽĚ ŝƐ DŝŐŚƚLJ ƚŽ ƐĂǀĞ͕ ,Ğ ŝƐ DŝŐŚƚLJ ƚŽ ƐĂǀĞ͘ &ŽƌĞǀĞƌ͕ ƵƚŚŽƌ ŽĨ ƐĂůǀĂƚŝŽŶ͕ ,Ğ ƌŽƐĞ ĂŶĚ ĐŽŶƋƵĞƌĞĚ ƚŚĞ ŐƌĂǀĞ͕ :ĞƐƵƐ ĐŽŶƋƵĞƌĞĚ ƚŚĞ ŐƌĂǀĞ͘ ;ϮͿ Page 18 of 143

The Parable of the Sower Matthew 13:1-23
The farmer spreads seed. It falls on the path, rocks, thorns, and in good soil.
Parable of the Sower Matthew 13:1-23 Matthew 13 1 That same day Jesus went out of the house and sat by the lake. 2Such large crowds gathered around him that he got into a boat and sat in it, while all the people stood on the shore. 3Then he told them many things in parables, saying: “A farmer went out to sow his seed. 4As he was scattering the seed, some fell along the path, and the birds came and ate it up. 5Some fell on rocky places, where it did not have much soil. It sprang up quickly, because the soil was shallow. 6But when the sun came up, the plants were scorched, and they withered because they had no root. 7 Other seed fell among thorns, which grew up and choked the plants. 8Still other seed fell on good soil, where it produced a crop—a hundred, sixty or thirty times what was sown. 9 He who has ears, let him hear.” 10 The disciples came to him and asked, “Why do you speak to the people in parables?” 11 He replied, “The knowledge of the secrets of the kingdom of heaven has been given to you, but not to them. 12Whoever has will be given more, and he will have an abundance. Whoever does not have, even what he has will be taken from him. 13This is why I speak to them in parables: “Though seeing, they do not see; though hearing, they do not hear or understand. 14 In them is fulfilled the prophecy of Isaiah: “‘You will be ever hearing but never understanding; you will be ever seeing but never perceiving. 15 For this people’s heart has become calloused; they hardly hear with their ears,
and they have closed their eyes. Otherwise they might see with their eyes, hear with their ears, understand with their hearts and turn, and I would heal them.’ 16
But blessed are your eyes because they see, and your ears because they hear. 17For I tell you the truth, many prophets and righteous men longed to see what you see but did not see it, and to hear what you hear but did not hear it. 18 “Listen then to what the parable of the sower means: 19When anyone hears the message about the kingdom and does not understand it, the evil one comes and snatches away what was sown in his heart. This is the seed sown along the path. 20The one who received the seed that fell on rocky places is the man who hears the word and at once receives it with joy. 21But since he has no root, he lasts only a short time. When trouble or persecution comes because of the word, he quickly falls away. 22The one who received the seed that fell among the thorns is the man who hears the word, but the worries of this life and the deceitfulness of wealth choke it, making it unfruitful. 23But the one who received the seed that fell on good soil is the man who hears the word and understands it. He produces a crop, yielding a hundred, sixty or thirty times what was sown.”

As Jesus sat by the lake, a large crowd gathered around him. Jesus got on a boat and taught the people as they listened from the shore. Jesus told the crowd a parable. A parable is a story with an earthy and heavenly meaning. Jesus told the story of a farmer who went out and planted seeds. As he did so, some of the seed fell on the path and the birds ate it up. Other seed fell on rocky soil where there was no soil so the seed sprang up quickly but then died. Other seed fell among thorns which choked the plants. And finally, some seed fell on good soil where it grew and grew. Jesus then explained the heavenly meaning: “When anyone hears the message about the kingdom and does not understand it, the evil one comes and snatches away what was sown in his heart. This is the seed sown along the path. The one who received the seed that fell on rocky places is the man who hears the word and at once receives it with joy. But since he has no root, he lasts only a short time. When trouble or persecution comes because of the word, he quickly falls away. The one who received the seed that fell among the thorns is the man who hears the word, but the worries of this life and the deceitfulness of wealth choke it, making it unfruitful. But the one who received the seed that fell on good soil is the man who hears the word and understands it. He produces a crop, yielding a hundred, sixty or thirty times what was sown. For more details, please read Matthew 13:1-23 in the Bible.

Jesus Makes a Dead Girl Live Mark 5:35-43 Mark 5 35
While Jesus was still speaking, some men came from the house of Jairus, the synagogue ruler. “Your daughter is dead,” they said. “Why bother the teacher any more?” 36 Ignoring what they said, Jesus told the synagogue ruler, “Don’t be afraid; just believe.” 37 He did not let anyone follow him except Peter, James and John the brother of James. 38When they came to the home of the synagogue ruler, Jesus saw a commotion, with people crying and wailing loudly. 39 He went in and said to them, “Why all this commotion and wailing? The child is not dead but
asleep.” 40But they laughed at him. After he put them all out, he took the child’s father and mother and the disciples who were with him, and went in where the child was. 41He took her by the hand and said to her, “Talitha koum!” (which means, “Little girl, I say to you, get up!”). 42 Immediately the girl stood up and walked around (she was twelve years old). At this they were completely astonished. 43He gave strict orders not to let anyone know about this, and told them to give her something to eat.

JESUS MAKES A DEAD GIRL LIVE Jesus was speaking to the crowd when some men from the house of Jairus came and told the synagogue ruler that his daughter was dead. Jesus ignored what the men said to Jairus and told him, “Don’t be afraid; just believe.” Jesus, Peter, James, and John went to the home of Jairus. When they arrived, people were crying and wailing loudly. Jesus said to the crowd, “Why all this commotion and wailing? The child is not dead, but asleep.” The people just laughed at Jesus. After Jesus cleared out the house, he took the child’s father and mother and the disciples that were with him, and went in where the child was. Jesus said, “Little girl, I say to you, get up!” Immediately the 12 year old girl stood up and walked around. At this they were completely amazed. Jesus told them not to tell anyone what had just happened. Then Jesus told them to give the girl something to eat. To find out more, read Mark 5:35-43 in your Bible.

Jesus Heals A Deaf & Mute Man Mark 7:31-37 Mark 7
31
Then Jesus left the vicinity of Tyre and went through Sidon, down to the Sea of Galilee and into the region of the Decapolis. 32 There some people brought to him a man who was deaf and could hardly talk, and they begged him to place his hand on the man. 33 After he took him aside, away from the crowd, Jesus put his fingers into the man’s ears. Then he spit and touched the man’s tongue. 34He looked up to heaven and with a deep sigh said to him, “Ephphatha!” (which
means, “Be opened!”). 35 At this, the man’s ears were opened, his tongue was loosened and he began to speak plainly. 36 Jesus commanded them not to tell anyone. But the more he did so, the more they kept talking about it. 37People were overwhelmed with amazement. “He has done everything well,” they said. “He even makes the deaf hear and the mute speak.”

But she gave everything she had.” For more on this story, read Mark 12:41-44 in your Bible.

The End of the Age Mark 13:1-13
Jesus teaches the people what to look for at the end of the age
Page 49 of 143
The End of The Age Mark 13:1-13 Mark 13 1 As he was leaving the temple, one of his disciples said to him, “Look, Teacher! What massive stones! What magnificent buildings!” 2 “Do you see all these great buildings?” replied Jesus. “Not one stone here will be left on another; every one will be thrown down.” 3 As Jesus was sitting on the Mount of Olives opposite the temple, Peter, James, John and Andrew asked him privately, 4 “Tell us, when will these things happen? And what will be the sign that they are all about to be fulfilled?” 5 Jesus said to them: “Watch out that no one deceives you. 6 Many will come in my name, claiming, ‘I am he,’ and will deceive many. 7When you hear of wars and rumors of wars, do not be alarmed. Such things must happen, but the end is still to come. 8Nation will rise against
nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be earthquakes in various places, and famines. These are the beginning of birth pains. 9 “You must be on your guard. You will be handed over to the local councils and flogged in the synagogues. On account of me you will stand before governors and kings as witnesses to them. 10 And the gospel must first be preached to all nations. 11 Whenever you are arrested and brought to trial, do not worry beforehand about what to say. Just say whatever is given you at the time, for it is not you speaking, but the Holy Spirit. 12 “Brother will betray brother to death, and a father his child. Children will rebel against their parents and have them put to death. 13All men will hate you because of me, but he who stands firm to the end will be saved.

THE END OF THE AGE As Jesus was leaving the temple, one of his disciples said, “Look, Teacher! What massive stones! What magnificent buildings!” Jesus replied, “Do you see all the great buildings? Not one stone here will be left on another.” Jesus’ disciples wanted to know when this would happen. Jesus began teaching the disciples of things to come. Jesus told the disciples that the end of the age will come when certain things happen. One of the signs will be wars and rumors of wars. Jesus warned to watch out for people who will pretend to be the Messiah. Other signs will include earthquakes and famines. Finally, the gospel must also be preached to all nations. Jesus told his disciples that they should be on their guard. They may be arrested and beaten because they follow after Jesus. Some other things that will happen at the end of the age will include brother betraying brother, children rebelling against their parents and having them put to death. Also, others will hate believers of Jesus. But Jesus promised that those who stand firm until the end will be saved. To find out more details about this story, read Mark 13:1-13 in your Bible.

The Weeds and the Wheat Matthew 13:24-30 & 36-43 Matthew 13 24
Jesus told them another parable: “The kingdom of heaven is like a man who sowed good seed in his field. 25But while everyone was sleeping, his enemy came and sowed weeds among the wheat, and went away. 26When the wheat sprouted and formed heads, then the weeds also appeared. 27 “The owner’s servants came to him and said, ‘Sir, didn’t you sow good seed in your field? Where then did the weeds come from?’ 28 “‘An enemy did this,’ he replied. “The servants asked him, ‘Do you want us to go and pull them up?’ 29 “‘No,’ he answered, ‘because while you are pulling the weeds, you may root up the wheat with them. 30Let both grow together until the harvest. At that time I will tell the harvesters: First collect the weeds and tie them in bundles to be burned; then gather the wheat and bring it into my barn.’”
36
Then he left the crowd and went into the house. His disciples came to him and said, “Explain to us the parable of the weeds in the field.” 37 He answered, “The one who sowed the good seed is the Son of Man. 38The field is the world, and the good seed stands for the sons of the kingdom. The weeds are the sons of the evil one, 39and the enemy who sows them is the devil. The harvest is the end of the age, and the harvesters are angels. 40 “As the weeds are pulled up and burned in the fire, so it will be at the end of the age. 41The Son of Man will send out his angels, and they will weed out of his kingdom everything that causes sin and all who do evil. 42They will throw them into the fiery furnace, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth. 43Then the righteous will shine like the sun in the kingdom of their Father. He who has ears, let him hear.

THE WEEDS AND THE WHEAT Jesus told a parable. A parable is a story with two meanings. There is an earthly meaning and a heavenly meaning. This parable was about a man who planted seeds in his field. While everyone was sleeping, his enemy came and planted weeds among the wheat. Both the weeds and the wheat began to grow. The owner’s servants came to him and asked where the weeds came from. The owner told the servants that his enemy planted the weeds. The servants asked the owner if he wanted them to pull out the weeds. The owner wanted to wait until harvest time to separate the weeds from the wheat. Then the weeds would be burned and the wheat would be taken into his barn. Then Jesus explained what the heavenly meaning of the story is. Jesus said that he is the farmer who planted the good seed. The good seeds are Christians. The field is the world. The one who planted weeds is the devil. The followers of the devil are the weeds. Harvest time is the end of the age. The followers of the devil will be thrown into a fiery furnace while the Christians will have a place in heaven with Jesus. For additional details about this story, please read Matthew 13:24-30 & 36-43 in your Bible.

Jesus Feeds 5,000 Matthew 14:13-21 Matthew 14 13
When Jesus heard what had happened, he withdrew by boat privately to a solitary place. Hearing of this, the crowds followed him on foot from the towns. 14 When Jesus landed and saw a large crowd, he had compassion on them and healed their sick. 15 As evening approached, the disciples came to him and said, “This is a remote place, and it’s already getting late. Send the crowds away, so they can go to the villages and buy themselves some food.” 16 Jesus replied, “They do not need to go away. You give them something to eat.” 17 “We have here only five loaves of bread and two fish,” they answered.
18
“Bring them here to me,” he said. 19And he directed the people to sit down on the grass. Taking the five loaves and the two fish and looking up to heaven, he gave thanks and broke the loaves. Then he gave them to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the people. 20They all ate and were satisfied, and the disciples picked up twelve basketfuls of broken pieces that were left over. 21The number of those who ate was about five thousand men, besides women and children.

Jesus Walks on Water Matthew 14:22-33 Matthew 14 22
Immediately Jesus made the disciples get into the boat and go on ahead of him to the other side, while he dismissed the crowd. 23After he had dismissed them, he went up on a mountainside by himself to pray. When evening came, he was there alone, 24but the boat was already a considerable distance from land, buffeted by the waves because the wind was against it. 25 During the fourth watch of the night Jesus went out to them, walking on the lake. 26 When the disciples saw him walking on the lake, they were terrified. “It’s a ghost,” they said, and cried out in fear. 27 But Jesus immediately said to them: “Take courage! It is I. Don’t be afraid.”
28
“Lord, if it’s you,” Peter replied, “tell me to come to you on the water.” 29 “Come,” he said. Then Peter got down out of the boat, walked on the water and came toward Jesus. 30But when he saw the wind, he was afraid and, beginning to sink, cried out, “Lord, save me!” 31 Immediately Jesus reached out his hand and caught him. “You of little faith,” he said, “why did you doubt?” 32 And when they climbed into the boat, the wind died down. 33Then those who were in the boat worshiped him, saying, “Truly you are the Son of God.”

Clean and Unclean Matthew 15:1-20
Jesus teaches the people that your heart makes you unclean, not what you eat
Page 69 of 143
Clean and Unclean Matthew 15:1-20 Matthew 15 1 Then some Pharisees and teachers of the law came to Jesus from Jerusalem and asked, 2“Why do your disciples break the tradition of the elders? They don’t wash their hands before they eat!” 3 Jesus replied, “And why do you break the command of God for the sake of your tradition? 4For God said, ‘Honor your father and mother’ and ‘Anyone who curses his father or mother must be put to death.’ 5But you say that if a man says to his father or mother, ‘Whatever help you might otherwise have received from me is a gift devoted to God,’ 6he is not to ‘honor his father’ with it. Thus you nullify the word of God for the sake of your tradition. 7You hypocrites! Isaiah was right when he prophesied about you: 8 “‘These people honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me. 9 They worship me in vain; their teachings are but rules taught by men.’” 10
Jesus called the crowd to him and said, “Listen and understand. 11 What goes into a man’s mouth does
not make him ‘unclean,’ but what comes out of his mouth, that is what makes him ‘unclean.’” 12 Then the disciples came to him and asked, “Do you know that the Pharisees were offended when they heard this?” 13 He replied, “Every plant that my heavenly Father has not planted will be pulled up by the roots. 14Leave them; they are blind guides. If a blind man leads a blind man, both will fall into a pit.” 15 Peter said, “Explain the parable to us.” 16 “Are you still so dull?” Jesus asked them. 17“Don’t you see that whatever enters the mouth goes into the stomach and then out of the body? 18But the things that come out of the mouth come from the heart, and these make a man ‘unclean.’ 19 For out of the heart come evil thoughts, murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false testimony, slander. 20These are what make a man ‘unclean’; but eating with unwashed hands does not make him ‘unclean.’”

QUESTIONS
1. What makes a man “unclean?”
Some Pharisees and teachers of the law asked why the disciples didn’t wash their hands before they ate. Jesus explained that what goes into your mouth does not make you “unclean,” but what comes of your mouth can make you “unclean.” Peter still did not understand what Jesus was talking about. Jesus told Peter, “What enters the mouth goes into the stomach and then out of the body. But the things that come out of your mouth come from the heart. Those things are what make you ‘unclean.’ Out of the heart come evil thoughts, murder, stealing, lying, etc. Eating with unwashed hands does not make you ‘unclean.’” For more details, please read Matthew 15:1-20 in your Bible.

The Good Samaritan Luke 10:25-37 Luke 10 25
On one occasion an expert in the law stood up to test Jesus. “Teacher,” he asked, “what must I do to inherit eternal life?” 26 “What is written in the Law?” he replied. “How do you read it?” 27 He answered: “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind’ ; and, ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’” 28 “You have answered correctly,” Jesus replied. “Do this and you will live.” 29 But he wanted to justify himself, so he asked Jesus, “And who is my neighbor?” 30 In reply Jesus said: “A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, when he fell into the hands of robbers. They stripped him of his clothes, beat him and went away, leaving him half dead. 31A priest happened to be going down the same road, and when he saw the man, he passed by on the other side. 32So too, a Levite, when he came to the place and saw him,
passed by on the other side. 33But a Samaritan, as he traveled, came where the man was; and when he saw him, he took pity on him. 34He went to him and bandaged his wounds, pouring on oil and wine. Then he put the man on his own donkey, took him to an inn and took care of him. 35The next day he took out two silver coins and gave them to the innkeeper. ‘Look after him,’ he said, ‘and when I return, I will reimburse you for any extra expense you may have.’ 36 “Which of these three do you think was a neighbor to the man who fell into the hands of robbers?” 37 The expert in the law replied, “The one who had mercy on him.”

QUESTIONS
1. What did the expert in the law ask Jesus?
An expert in the law tried to test Jesus by asking, “What must I do to inherit eternal life?” Jesus asked the expert what the law said. The expert said, “Love the Lord your God with all your heart, strength, and mind and love your neighbor as yourself. Jesus replied, “You have answered correctly. Do this and you will live.” The expert in the law wanted to justify himself so he asked, “Who is my neighbor?” Jesus told the expert a story about a man who fell into the hands of robbers. They stripped him of his clothes and beat him up and went away leaving him half dead. Both a priest and a Levite just walked past the hurt man. But a Samaritan took pity on the man and bandaged his wounds. The Samaritan put the man on his own donkey and took the man to an inn and took care of him. The next day he gave the innkeeper two silver coins to look after the man. Then Jesus asked the expert in the law, “Which of these three was a neighbor to the man who got hurt?” The expert in the law replied, “The one who had mercy on him.” For more details, please read Luke 10:2537 in your Bible.

many years. Take life easy; eat, drink and be merry.”’ 20 “But God said to him, ‘You fool! This very night your life will be demanded from you. Then who will get what you have prepared for yourself?’ 21 “This is how it will be with anyone who stores up things for himself but is not rich toward God.”

THE PARABLE OF THE RICH FOOL Jesus told a story called a parable. A parable is a story with two meanings. There is an earthly meaning and a heavenly meaning. Jesus told this story: A rich man had land that produced a good crop. He thought to himself, “What shall I do? I have no place to store my crops.” So the rich man decided to tear down his barns and build bigger ones to store his grain. Then the man decided to relax because he had plenty of good things stored up for himself. But that very night the rich man would die. Jesus asked who would get the riches he stored up for himself. Jesus explained the parable by saying, “This is how it will be with anyone who stores up things for himself but is not rich toward God.” For more details, please read Luke 12:16-21 in the Bible.

They traveled from Mount Hor along the route to the Red Sea, to go around Edom. But the people grew impatient on the way; 5 they spoke against God and against Moses, and said, “Why have you brought us up out of Egypt to die in the desert? There is no bread! There is no water! And we detest this miserable food!” 6 Then the LORD sent venomous snakes among them; they bit the people and many Israelites died. 7The people came to Moses
and said, “We sinned when we spoke against the LORD and against you. Pray that the LORD will take the snakes away from us.” So Moses prayed for the people. 8 The LORD said to Moses, “Make a snake and put it up on a pole; anyone who is bitten can look at it and live.” 9 So Moses made a bronze snake and put it up on a pole. Then when anyone was bitten by a snake and looked at the bronze snake, he lived.

THE BRASS SERPENT
QUESTIONS
The Israelites continued to travel through the desert from Mount Hor to the Red Sea. They traveled that route because the king of Edom would not let them pass through his land. The Israelites grew impatient and started to complain once again. They spoke against God and Moses saying, “Why have you brought us out of Egypt to die in the desert? There is nothing good to eat and no water out here!” Then the Lord sent poisonous snakes to bite the people. Many of the Israelites died. Some of the people came to Moses and said, “We sinned when we spoke against the Lord and you. Pray that the Lord will take the snakes away from us.” Then the Lord told Moses to make a bronze snake and put it up on a pole. Anyone who got bit by a snake could look up at the snake and live. This is a good lesson for us today. Anytime we have trouble, we can look up too. Today, we don’t look up at a bronze snake. We look to God! To find out more details about this story, read Numbers 21:4-9 in your Bible.

The Israelites Are Victorious Numbers 21:21-35
The Israelites are victorious over the Amorites
Page 94 of 143
The Israelites Are Victorious Numbers 21:21-35 Numbers 21 21 Israel sent messengers to say to Sihon king of the Amorites: 22
“Let us pass through your country. We will not turn aside into any field or vineyard, or drink water from any well. We will travel along the king’s highway until we have passed through your territory.” 23
But Sihon would not let Israel pass through his territory. He mustered his entire army and marched out into the desert against Israel. When he reached Jahaz, he fought with Israel. 24Israel, however, put him to the sword and took over his land from the Arnon to the Jabbok, but only as far as the Ammonites, because their border was fortified. 25Israel captured all the cities of the Amorites and occupied them, including Heshbon and all its surrounding settlements. 26Heshbon was the city of Sihon king of the Amorites, who had fought against the former king of Moab and had taken from him all his land as far as the Arnon. 27 That is why the poets say: “Come to Heshbon and let it be rebuilt; let Sihon’s city be restored. 28 “Fire went out from Heshbon, a blaze from the city of Sihon. It consumed Ar of Moab, the citizens of Arnon’s heights. 29 Woe to you, O Moab!
30
You are destroyed, O people of Chemosh! He has given up his sons as fugitives and his daughters as captives to Sihon king of the Amorites. “But we have overthrown them; Heshbon is destroyed all the way to Dibon. We have demolished them as far as Nophah, which extends to Medeba.” 31
So Israel settled in the land of the Amorites. 32 After Moses had sent spies to Jazer, the Israelites captured its surrounding settlements and drove out the Amorites who were there. 33Then they turned and went up along the road toward Bashan, and Og king of Bashan and his whole army marched out to meet them in battle at Edrei. 34 The LORD said to Moses, “Do not be afraid of him, for I have handed him over to you, with his whole army and his land. Do to him what you did to Sihon king of the Amorites, who reigned in Heshbon.” 35 So they struck him down, together with his sons and his whole army, leaving them no survivors. And they took possession of his land.

Balaam and the Donkey Numbers 22:1-35
Balaam rides his donkey to visit Balak, king of Moab
Page 99 of 143
Balaam and the Donkey Numbers 22:1-35 Numbers 22 1
Then the Israelites traveled to the plains of Moab and camped along the Jordan across from Jericho. 2 Now Balak son of Zippor saw all that Israel had done to the Amorites, 3and Moab was terrified because there were so many people. Indeed, Moab was filled with dread because of the Israelites. 4 The Moabites said to the elders of Midian, “This horde is going to lick up everything around us, as an ox licks up the grass of the field.” So Balak son of Zippor, who was king of Moab at that time, 5sent messengers to summon Balaam son of Beor, who was at Pethor, near the River, in his native land. Balak said: “A people has come out of Egypt; they cover the face of the land and have settled next to me. 6Now come and put a curse on these people, because they are too powerful for me. Perhaps then I will be able to defeat them and drive them out of the country. For I know that those you bless are blessed, and those you curse are cursed.” 7
The elders of Moab and Midian left, taking with them the fee for divination. When they came to Balaam, they told him what Balak had said. 8 “Spend the night here,” Balaam said to them, “and I will bring you back the answer the LORD gives me.” So the Moabite princes stayed with him. 9 God came to Balaam and asked, “Who are these men with you?” 10 Balaam said to God, “Balak son of Zippor, king of Moab, sent me this message: 11‘A people that has come out of Egypt covers the face of the land. Now come and put a curse on them for me. Perhaps then I will be able to fight them and drive them away.’” 12 But God said to Balaam, “Do not go with them. You must not put a curse on those people, because they are blessed.” 13 The next morning Balaam got up and said to Balak’s princes, “Go back to your own country, for the LORD has refused to let me go with you.” 14 So the Moabite princes returned to Balak and said, “Balaam refused to come with us.” 15 Then Balak sent other princes, more numerous and more distinguished than the first. 16They came to Balaam and said: “This is what Balak son of Zippor says: Do not let anything keep you from coming to me, 17because I will reward you handsomely and do whatever you say. Come and put a curse on these people for me.”
18
But Balaam answered them, “Even if Balak gave me his palace filled with silver and gold, I could not do anything great or small to go beyond the command of the LORD my God. 19Now stay here tonight as the others did, and I will find out what else the LORD will tell me.” 20 That night God came to Balaam and said, “Since these men have come to summon you, go with them, but do only what I tell you.” 21 Balaam got up in the morning, saddled his donkey and went with the princes of Moab. 22But God was very angry when he went, and the angel of the LORD stood in the road to oppose him. Balaam was riding on his donkey, and his two servants were with him. 23When the donkey saw the angel of the LORD standing in the road with a drawn sword in his hand, she turned off the road into a field. Balaam beat her to get her back on the road. 24 Then the angel of the LORD stood in a narrow path between two vineyards, with walls on both sides. 25When the donkey saw the angel of the LORD, she pressed close to the wall, crushing Balaam’s foot against it. So he beat her again. 26 Then the angel of the LORD moved on ahead and stood in a narrow place where there was no room to turn, either to the right or to the left. 27When the donkey saw the angel of the LORD, she lay down under Balaam, and he was angry and beat her with his staff. 28Then the LORD opened the donkey’s mouth, and she said to Balaam, “What have I done to you to make you beat me these three times?” 29 Balaam answered the donkey, “You have made a fool of me! If I had a sword in my hand, I would kill you right now.” 30 The donkey said to Balaam, “Am I not your own donkey, which you have always ridden, to this day? Have I been in the habit of doing this to you?” “No,” he said. 31 Then the LORD opened Balaam’s eyes, and he saw the angel of the LORD standing in the road with his sword drawn. So he bowed low and fell facedown. 32 The angel of the LORD asked him, “Why have you beaten your donkey these three times? I have come here to oppose you because your path is a reckless one before me. } 33 The donkey saw me and turned away from me these three times. If she had not turned away, I would certainly have killed you by now, but I would have spared her.” 34 Balaam said to the angel of the LORD, “I have sinned. I did not realize you were standing in the road to oppose me. Now if you are displeased, I will go back.” 35 The angel of the LORD said to Balaam, “Go with the men, but speak only what I tell you.” So Balaam went with the princes of Balak.

BALAAM AND THE DONKEY The Israelites traveled to the plains of Moab near the Jordan river. Balak, the king of Moab, was scared of the Israelites because they had already taken the land of the Amorites and the land of Bashan. Balak was afraid that the land of Moab would be attacked too. Balak sent messengers to a man named Balaam to have him come and put a curse on the Israelites. God spoke to Balaam and told him not to put a curse on the Israelites because they were blessed. Balak sent even more messengers to Balaam to convince him to put a curse on the Israelites. The next morning, Balaam got on his donkey to go see the king. God was angry with Balaam. He sent an angel with a sword to keep Balaam from speaking to the king. Balaam, however, did not see the angel, but his donkey did. His donkey would not go forward. Balaam began to beat his donkey. The Lord opened the donkey’s mouth and she said, “What have I done to you to make you beat me three times?” Balaam answered, “You have made a fool of me.” Then the Lord opened Balaam’s eyes, and he saw the angel of the Lord standing in the road. Balaam bowed low and fell facedown. Balaam realized that he had sinned. The Lord was trying to keep Balaam from doing something foolish on his own. Balaam was going to turn around and go home but the Lord allowed Balaam to go to the king after all. The Lord told Balaam, “Speak only what I tell you.” The Lord would give Balaam the words to speak. To find out more, read Numbers 22:1-35 in your Bible.

Joshua is Chosen as Leader Numbers 27:12-23 & Deuteronomy 34:1-12 Numbers 27 12 Then the LORD said to Moses, “Go up this mountain in the Abarim range and see the land I have given the Israelites. 13After you have seen it, you too will be gathered to your people, as your brother Aaron was, 14for when the community rebelled at the waters in the Desert of Zin, both of you disobeyed my command to honor me as holy before their eyes.” (These were the waters of Meribah Kadesh, in the Desert of Zin.) 15 Moses said to the LORD, 16“May the LORD, the God of the spirits of all mankind, appoint a man over this community 17to go out and come in before them, one who will lead them out and bring them in, so the LORD’S people will not be like sheep without a shepherd.” 18 So the LORD said to Moses, “Take Joshua son of Nun, a man in whom is the spirit, and lay your hand on him. 19Have him stand before Eleazar the priest and the entire assembly and commission him in their presence. 20Give him some of your authority so the whole Israelite community will obey him. 21He is to stand before Eleazar the priest, who will obtain decisions for him by inquiring of the Urim before the LORD. At his command he and the entire community of the Israelites will go out, and at his command they will come in.” 22 Moses did as the LORD commanded him. He took Joshua and had him stand before Eleazar the priest and the whole assembly. 23 Then he laid his hands on him and commissioned him, as the LORD instructed through Moses.
Deuteronomy 34 1 Then Moses climbed Mount Nebo from the plains of Moab to the top of Pisgah, across from Jericho. There the LORD showed him the whole land—from Gilead to Dan, 2all of Naphtali, the territory of Ephraim and Manasseh, all the land of Judah as far as the western sea, 3the Negev and the whole region from the Valley of Jericho, the City of Palms, as far as Zoar. 4Then the LORD said to him, “This is the land I promised on oath to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob when I said, ‘I will give it to your descendants.’ I have let you see it with your eyes, but you will not cross over into it.” 5 And Moses the servant of the LORD died there in Moab, as the LORD had said. 6He buried him in Moab, in the valley opposite Beth Peor, but to this day no one knows where his grave is. 7Moses was a hundred and twenty years old when he died, yet his eyes were not weak nor his strength gone. 8The Israelites grieved for Moses in the plains of Moab thirty days, until the time of weeping and mourning was over. 9 Now Joshua son of Nun was filled with the spirit of wisdom because Moses had laid his hands on him. So the Israelites listened to him and did what the LORD had commanded Moses. 10 Since then, no prophet has risen in Israel like Moses, whom the LORD knew face to face, 11 who did all those miraculous signs and wonders the LORD sent him to do in Egypt— to Pharaoh and to all his officials and to his whole land. 12For no one has ever shown the mighty power or performed the awesome deeds that Moses did in the sight of all Israel.

JOSHUA IS CHOSEN AS LEADER The Lord told Moses go up to the top of Mount Nebo. He wanted Moses to see the land that he was giving the Israelites. This was the land that the Lord had promised to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. Moses, however, would not get to enter the land because he and Aaron had disobeyed God. The Lord told Moses that he was about to die. So Moses asked the Lord to choose a man to lead the Israelites after his death. The Lord told Moses to lay his hand on Joshua in front of Eleazar, the priest, and the Israelite community. The Lord wanted the Israelites to see that Joshua would be their next leader. After seeing the Promised Land from Mount Nebo, Moses died in Moab. The Israelites mourned for 30 days. Joshua took over as leader of the Israelites. The Israelites listened to Joshua and did what he said to do. For more details, please read Numbers 27:12-23 & Deuteronomy 34:1-12 in the Bible.

The Tribes of Reuben and Gad Numbers 32:1-33 Numbers 32 1 The Reubenites and Gadites, who had very large herds and flocks, saw that the lands of Jazer and Gilead were suitable for livestock. 2So they came to Moses and Eleazar the priest and to the leaders of the community, and said, 3“Ataroth, Dibon, Jazer, Nimrah, Heshbon, Elealeh, Sebam, Nebo and Beon—4the land the LORD subdued before the people of Israel—are suitable for livestock, and your servants have livestock. 5If we have found favor in your eyes,” they said, “let this land be given to your servants as our possession. Do not make us cross the Jordan.” 6 Moses said to the Gadites and Reubenites, “Shall your countrymen go to war while you sit here? 7Why do you discourage the Israelites from going over into the land the LORD has given them? 8 This is what your fathers did when I sent them from Kadesh Barnea to look over the land. 9After they went up to the Valley of Eshcol and viewed the land, they discouraged the Israelites from entering the land the LORD had given them. 10The LORD’S anger was aroused that day and he swore this oath: 11 ‘Because they have not followed me wholeheartedly, not one of the men twenty years old or more who came up out of Egypt will see the land I promised on oath to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob— 12 not one except Caleb son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite and Joshua son of Nun, for they followed the LORD wholeheartedly.’ 13The LORD’S anger burned against Israel and he made them wander in the desert forty years, until the whole generation of those who had done evil in his sight was gone. 14 “And here you are, a brood of sinners, standing in the place of your fathers and making the LORD even more angry with Israel. 15If you turn away from following him, he will again leave all this people in the desert, and you will be the cause of their destruction.” 16 Then they came up to him and said, “We would like to build pens here for our livestock and cities for our women and children. 17But we are ready to arm ourselves and go ahead of the Israelites until we have brought them to their place. Meanwhile our women and children will live in fortified cities, for protection from the inhabitants of
the land. 18We will not return to our homes until every Israelite has received his inheritance. 19We will not receive any inheritance with them on the other side of the Jordan, because our inheritance has come to us on the east side of the Jordan.” 20 Then Moses said to them, “If you will do this—if you will arm yourselves before the LORD for battle, 21and if all of you will go armed over the Jordan before the LORD until he has driven his enemies out before him—22then when the land is subdued before the LORD, you may return and be free from your obligation to the LORD and to Israel. And this land will be your possession before the LORD. 23 “But if you fail to do this, you will be sinning against the LORD; and you may be sure that your sin will find you out. 24Build cities for your women and children, and pens for your flocks, but do what you have promised.” 25 The Gadites and Reubenites said to Moses, “We your servants will do as our lord commands. 26 Our children and wives, our flocks and herds will remain here in the cities of Gilead. 27But your servants, every man armed for battle, will cross over to fight before the LORD, just as our lord says.” 28 Then Moses gave orders about them to Eleazar the priest and Joshua son of Nun and to the family heads of the Israelite tribes. 29He said to them, “If the Gadites and Reubenites, every man armed for battle, cross over the Jordan with you before the LORD, then when the land is subdued before you, give them the land of Gilead as their possession. 30 But if they do not cross over with you armed, they must accept their possession with you in Canaan.” 31 The Gadites and Reubenites answered, “Your servants will do what the LORD has said. 32We will cross over before the LORD into Canaan armed, but the property we inherit will be on this side of the Jordan.” 33 Then Moses gave to the Gadites, the Reubenites and the half-tribe of Manasseh son of Joseph the kingdom of Sihon king of the Amorites and the kingdom of Og king of Bashan—the whole land with its cities and the territory around them.

The Bible Times Herald A Special Report on Numbers 32:1-33
THE TRIBES OF REUBEN AND GAD Long ago, the Lord made a promise to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob that the land on the west side of the Jordan River would someday be theirs. This special land was called Canaan. Canaan was known as the Promised Land. Unfortunately, any of the men 20 years or older who came up out of Egypt would not be able to live in Canaan because they disobeyed God. God made the Israelites wander in the desert for 40 years because of their disobedience. Caleb and Joshua, however, obeyed God and would be able to enter Canaan. Two of the twelve tribes wanted to stay on the east side of the Jordan instead of living in Canaan. They thought the land was suitable for their animals. They asked Moses if they could live there instead of living in Canaan. Moses was hesitant but agreed as long as the tribes of Reuben and Gad helped the rest of the Israelites enter Canaan. The Lord promised the Israelites the land of Canaan. Men who were 5 years or older could not enter Canaan. Two tribes did not want to live in Canaan. Moses said that all of the tribes had to live in Canaan. The tribes of Reuben and Gad had to help the rest of the Israelites enter Canaan. God made the Israelites wander in the desert because it was good for their health.

Rahab and the Spies Joshua 2:1-24 Joshua 2 1
Then Joshua son of Nun secretly sent two spies from Shittim. “Go, look over the land,” he said, “especially Jericho.” So they went and entered the house of a prostitute named Rahab and stayed there. 2 The king of Jericho was told, “Look! Some of the Israelites have come here tonight to spy out the land.” 3So the king of Jericho sent this message to Rahab: “Bring out the men who came to you and entered your house, because they have come to spy out the whole land.” 4 But the woman had taken the two men and hidden them. She said, “Yes, the men came to me, but I did not know where they had come from. 5At dusk, when it was time to close the city gate, the men left. I don’t know which way they went. Go after them quickly. You may catch up with them.” 6 (But she had taken them up to the roof and hidden them under the stalks of flax she had laid out on the roof.) 7So the men set out in pursuit of the spies on the road that leads to the fords of the Jordan, and as soon as the pursuers had gone out, the gate was shut. 8 Before the spies lay down for the night, she went up on the roof 9and said to them, “I know that the LORD has given this land to you and that a great fear of you has fallen on us, so that all who live in this country are melting in fear because of you. 10We have heard how the LORD dried up the water of the Red Sea for you when you came out of Egypt, and what you did to Sihon and Og, the two kings of the Amorites east of the Jordan, whom you completely destroyed. 11When we heard of it, our hearts melted and everyone’s courage failed because of you, for the LORD your God is God in heaven above and on the earth below. 12Now then, please swear to me by the LORD that you will show kindness to my family, because I have shown kindness to you. Give me a sure sign 13that you will spare the lives of my father and mother, my brothers and sisters, and all
who belong to them, and that you will save us from death.” 14 “Our lives for your lives!” the men assured her. “If you don’t tell what we are doing, we will treat you kindly and faithfully when the LORD gives us the land.” 15 So she let them down by a rope through the window, for the house she lived in was part of the city wall. 16Now she had said to them, “Go to the hills so the pursuers will not find you. Hide yourselves there three days until they return, and then go on your way.” 17 The men said to her, “This oath you made us swear will not be binding on us 18unless, when we enter the land, you have tied this scarlet cord in the window through which you let us down, and unless you have brought your father and mother, your brothers and all your family into your house. 19 If anyone goes outside your house into the street, his blood will be on his own head; we will not be responsible. As for anyone who is in the house with you, his blood will be on our head if a hand is laid on him. 20But if you tell what we are doing, we will be released from the oath you made us swear.” 21 “Agreed,” she replied. “Let it be as you say.” So she sent them away and they departed. And she tied the scarlet cord in the window. 22 When they left, they went into the hills and stayed there three days, until the pursuers had searched all along the road and returned without finding them. 23Then the two men started back. They went down out of the hills, forded the river and came to Joshua son of Nun and told him everything that had happened to them. 24They said to Joshua, “The LORD has surely given the whole land into our hands; all the people are melting in fear because of us.”

RAHAB AND THE SPIES Joshua secretly sent two spies to the Promised Land to check it out. This was the land that the Lord was giving to the Israelites. The spies stayed at Rahab’s house. When the king of Jericho found out that spies were in Jericho, he sent a message to Rahab. The king wanted Rahab to bring the spies to him. Rahab made up a story about the spies running out of the city when it began to get dark. The spies were actually hiding on Rahab’s roof. Rahab talked with the spies and said, “I know that the Lord has given this land to the Israelites. Everyone is scared including me. Please show kindness to my family because I hid you from the king. We do not want to be killed when the Israelites take over our city.” The spies agreed. Because Rahab was kind to them, the spies would keep Rahab’s family safe. Rahab let the spies down by a rope through the window because the house she lived in was part of the city wall. The spies hid for three days and then went back to Joshua. They told Joshua, “The Lord has surely given the whole land into our hands. All of the people are melting in fear because of us.” Later, when the Israelites entered the city of Jericho, Rahab’s family was spared. For more details, please read Joshua 2:1-24 in your Bible.

Crossing the Jordan Joshua 3-4:7

Crossing the Jordan Joshua 3-4:7 Joshua 3 1
Early in the morning Joshua and all the Israelites set out from Shittim and went to the Jordan, where they camped before crossing over. 2 After three days the officers went throughout the camp, 3giving orders to the people: “When you see the ark of the covenant of the LORD your God, and the priests, who are Levites, carrying it, you are to move out from your positions and follow it. 4Then you will know which way to go, since you have never been this way before. But keep a distance of about a thousand yards between you and the ark; do not go near it.” 5 Joshua told the people, “Consecrate yourselves, for tomorrow the LORD will do amazing things among you.” 6 Joshua said to the priests, “Take up the ark of the covenant and pass on ahead of the people.” So they took it up and went ahead of them. 7 And the LORD said to Joshua, “Today I will begin to exalt you in the eyes of all Israel, so they may know that I am with you as I was with Moses. 8Tell the priests who carry the ark of the covenant: ‘When you reach the edge of the Jordan’s waters, go and stand in the river.’” 9 Joshua said to the Israelites, “Come here and listen to the words of the LORD your God. 10This is how you will know that the living God is among you and that he will certainly drive out before you the Canaanites, Hittites, Hivites, Perizzites, Girgashites, Amorites and Jebusites. 11 See, the ark of the covenant of the Lord of all the earth will go into the Jordan ahead of you. 12 Now then, choose twelve men from the tribes of Israel, one from each tribe. 13And as soon as the priests who carry the ark of the LORD—the Lord of all the earth—set foot in the Jordan, its waters flowing downstream will be cut off and stand up in a heap.” 14 So when the people broke camp to cross the Jordan, the priests carrying the ark of the covenant went ahead of them. 15Now the Jordan is at flood stage all during harvest. Yet as soon as the priests
who carried the ark reached the Jordan and their feet touched the water’s edge, 16the water from upstream stopped flowing. It piled up in a heap a great distance away, at a town called Adam in the vicinity of Zarethan, while the water flowing down to the Sea of the Arabah (the Salt Sea ) was completely cut off. So the people crossed over opposite Jericho. 17The priests who carried the ark of the covenant of the LORD stood firm on dry ground in the middle of the Jordan, while all Israel passed by until the whole nation had completed the crossing on dry ground.
Joshua 4 1
When the whole nation had finished crossing the Jordan, the LORD said to Joshua, 2“Choose twelve men from among the people, one from each tribe, 3and tell them to take up twelve stones from the middle of the Jordan from right where the priests stood and to carry them over with you and put them down at the place where you stay tonight.” 4 So Joshua called together the twelve men he had appointed from the Israelites, one from each tribe, 5and said to them, “Go over before the ark of the LORD your God into the middle of the Jordan. Each of you is to take up a stone on his shoulder, according to the number of the tribes of the Israelites, 6to serve as a sign among you. In the future, when your children ask you, ‘What do these stones mean?’ 7tell them that the flow of the Jordan was cut off before the ark of the covenant of the LORD. When it crossed the Jordan, the waters of the Jordan were cut off. These stones are to be a memorial to the people of Israel forever.”

QUESTIONS
CROSSING THE JORDAN
1. What were the Israelites supposed to follow?
Early in the morning, the Israelites traveled to the Jordan River where they camped. After three days, the officers went through the camp telling the people to get themselves ready to follow the ark of the covenant across the river. The Lord said to Joshua, “Take up the ark of the covenant and go ahead of the people. Today I will exalt you in the eyes of Israel so they may know that I am with you.” The priests carried the ark of the covenant ahead of the people all the way to the edge of the Jordan River. When the priests’ feet touched the water, it stopped flowing. It piled in a heap a great distance away. The priests stood in the middle of the Jordan River as the Israelites crossed on dry ground. When the whole nation of Israel had crossed the Jordan River, the Lord told Joshua to choose one man from each of the twelve tribes to gather stones from the Jordan River. So the twelve men gathered one stone each from the middle of the Jordan River and brought them to where they were staying. These stones would help their children remember what the Lord did by stopping the Jordan River so that the Israelites could safely cross it. For more details, please read Joshua 3-4:7 in the Bible.
2. What happened when the priests’ feet touched the water? 3. Why did Joshua have the 12 men pick up stones from the Jordan River?

The Walls of Jericho Fall Joshua 6:1-27

The Walls of Jericho Fall Joshua 6:1-27 Joshua 6 1 Now Jericho was tightly shut up because of the Israelites. No one went out and no one came in. 2 Then the LORD said to Joshua, “See, I have delivered Jericho into your hands, along with its king and its fighting men. 3March around the city once with all the armed men. Do this for six days. 4Have seven priests carry trumpets of rams’ horns in front of the ark. On the seventh day, march around the city seven times, with the priests blowing the trumpets. 5When you hear them sound a long blast on the trumpets, have all the people give a loud shout; then the wall of the city will collapse and the people will go up, every man straight in.” 6 So Joshua son of Nun called the priests and said to them, “Take up the ark of the covenant of the LORD and have seven priests carry trumpets in front of it.” 7And he ordered the people, “Advance! March around the city, with the armed guard going ahead of the ark of the LORD.” 8 When Joshua had spoken to the people, the seven priests carrying the seven trumpets before the LORD went forward, blowing their trumpets, and the ark of the LORD’S covenant followed them. 9The armed guard marched ahead of the priests who blew the trumpets, and the rear guard followed the ark. All this time the trumpets were sounding. 10But Joshua had commanded the people, “Do not give a war cry, do not raise your voices, do not say a word until the day I tell you to shout. Then shout!” 11So he had the ark of the LORD carried around the city, circling it once. Then the people returned to camp and spent the night there. 12 Joshua got up early the next morning and the priests took up the ark of the LORD. 13The seven priests carrying the seven trumpets went forward, marching before the ark of the LORD and blowing the trumpets. The armed men went ahead of them and the rear guard followed the ark of the LORD, while the trumpets kept sounding. 14So on the second day they marched around the city once and returned to the camp. They did this for six days. 15 On the seventh day, they got up at daybreak and marched around the city seven times in the same manner, except that on that day they circled the city seven times. 16The seventh time around, when the
priests sounded the trumpet blast, Joshua commanded the people, “Shout! For the LORD has given you the city! 17The city and all that is in it are to be devoted to the LORD. Only Rahab the prostitute and all who are with her in her house shall be spared, because she hid the spies we sent. 18But keep away from the devoted things, so that you will not bring about your own destruction by taking any of them. Otherwise you will make the camp of Israel liable to destruction and bring trouble on it. 19All the silver and gold and the articles of bronze and iron are sacred to the LORD and must go into his treasury.” 20 When the trumpets sounded, the people shouted, and at the sound of the trumpet, when the people gave a loud shout, the wall collapsed; so every man charged straight in, and they took the city. 21They devoted the city to the LORD and destroyed with the sword every living thing in it—men and women, young and old, cattle, sheep and donkeys. 22 Joshua said to the two men who had spied out the land, “Go into the prostitute’s house and bring her out and all who belong to her, in accordance with your oath to her.” 23So the young men who had done the spying went in and brought out Rahab, her father and mother and brothers and all who belonged to her. They brought out her entire family and put them in a place outside the camp of Israel. 24 Then they burned the whole city and everything in it, but they put the silver and gold and the articles of bronze and iron into the treasury of the LORD’S house. 25But Joshua spared Rahab the prostitute, with her family and all who belonged to her, because she hid the men Joshua had sent as spies to Jericho—and she lives among the Israelites to this day. 26 At that time Joshua pronounced this solemn oath: “Cursed before the LORD is the man who undertakes to rebuild this city, Jericho: “At the cost of his firstborn son will he lay its foundations; at the cost of his youngest will he set up its gates.” 27
So the LORD was with Joshua, and his fame spread throughout the land.

THE WALLS OF JERICHO FALL
QUESTIONS
1. What did the Israelites do for seven days?
The city of Jericho was kept locked up because they feared the Israelites. They didn’t want the Israelites to take over their city. The people of Jericho didn’t know that the Lord had given the city of Jericho to his people, the Israelites. The Lord said to Joshua, “March around the city once each day for six days. Have the priests carry trumpets in front of the ark. On the seventh day, march around the city seven times with the priests blowing the trumpets. Then have the people shout. The wall of the city will fall down and you can enter.” On the seventh day, the Israelites marched around the city seven times and then shouted. The walls came crashing down. The Israelites took the city. Every living thing in Jericho was killed by the Israelites except Rahab and her family. They were not killed because she had helped the spies who were sent into Jericho by Joshua. Joshua gave instructions to save the silver, gold, and bronze for the Lord’s treasury. Then the Israelites burned the city. The Lord was with Joshua and his fame spread throughout the land. For more details, please read Joshua 6:1-27 in the Bible.

Achan’s Sin Joshua 7:1-26 Joshua 7 1 But the Israelites acted unfaithfully in regard to the devoted things; Achan son of Carmi, the son of Zimri, the son of Zerah, of the tribe of Judah, took some of them. So the LORD’S anger burned against Israel. 2 Now Joshua sent men from Jericho to Ai, which is near Beth Aven to the east of Bethel, and told them, “Go up and spy out the region.” So the men went up and spied out Ai. 3 When they returned to Joshua, they said, “Not all the people will have to go up against Ai. Send two or three thousand men to take it and do not weary all the people, for only a few men are there.” 4So about three thousand men went up; but they were routed by the men of Ai, 5who killed about thirty-six of them. They chased the Israelites from the city gate as far as the stone quarries and struck them down on the slopes. At this the hearts of the people melted and became like water. 6 Then Joshua tore his clothes and fell facedown to the ground before the ark of the LORD, remaining there till evening. The elders of Israel did the same, and sprinkled dust on their heads. 7And Joshua said, “Ah, Sovereign LORD, why did you ever bring this people across the Jordan to deliver us into the hands of the Amorites to destroy us? If only we had been content to stay on the other side of the Jordan! 8O Lord, what can I say, now that Israel has been routed by its enemies? 9The Canaanites and the other people of the country will hear about this and they will surround us and wipe out our name from the earth. What then will you do for your own great name?” 10 The LORD said to Joshua, “Stand up! What are you doing down on your face? 11Israel has sinned; they have violated my covenant, which I commanded them to keep. They have taken some of the devoted things; they have stolen, they have lied, they have put them with their own possessions. 12That is why the Israelites cannot stand against their enemies; they turn their backs and run because they have been made liable to destruction. I will not be with you anymore unless you destroy whatever among you is devoted to destruction. 13 “Go, consecrate the people. Tell them, ‘Consecrate yourselves in preparation for tomorrow; for this is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: That which is devoted is among you, O Israel. You cannot stand against your enemies until you remove it.
14
“‘In the morning, present yourselves tribe by tribe. The tribe that the LORD takes shall come forward clan by clan; the clan that the LORD takes shall come forward family by family; and the family that the LORD takes shall come forward man by man. 15 He who is caught with the devoted things shall be destroyed by fire, along with all that belongs to him. He has violated the covenant of the LORD and has done a disgraceful thing in Israel!’” 16 Early the next morning Joshua had Israel come forward by tribes, and Judah was taken. 17The clans of Judah came forward, and he took the Zerahites. He had the clan of the Zerahites come forward by families, and Zimri was taken. 18Joshua had his family come forward man by man, and Achan son of Carmi, the son of Zimri, the son of Zerah, of the tribe of Judah, was taken. 19 Then Joshua said to Achan, “My son, give glory to the LORD, the God of Israel, and give him the praise. Tell me what you have done; do not hide it from me.” 20 Achan replied, “It is true! I have sinned against the LORD, the God of Israel. This is what I have done: 21 When I saw in the plunder a beautiful robe from Babylonia, two hundred shekels of silver and a wedge of gold weighing fifty shekels, I coveted them and took them. They are hidden in the ground inside my tent, with the silver underneath.” 22 So Joshua sent messengers, and they ran to the tent, and there it was, hidden in his tent, with the silver underneath. 23They took the things from the tent, brought them to Joshua and all the Israelites and spread them out before the LORD. 24 Then Joshua, together with all Israel, took Achan son of Zerah, the silver, the robe, the gold wedge, his sons and daughters, his cattle, donkeys and sheep, his tent and all that he had, to the Valley of Achor. 25 Joshua said, “Why have you brought this trouble on us? The LORD will bring trouble on you today.” Then all Israel stoned him, and after they had stoned the rest, they burned them. 26Over Achan they heaped up a large pile of rocks, which remains to this day. Then the LORD turned from his fierce anger. Therefore that place has been called the Valley of Achor ever since.

ACHAN’S SIN
QUESTIONS
Some of the Israelite men traveled from Jericho to spy on the people living in a place called Ai. When the Israelites returned, they told Joshua that they did not need many people to fight against the people in Ai. They told Joshua to send only two or three thousand men. Joshua sent his men to fight the people of Ai. The Israelites should have won, but they didn’t. In fact, 36 of the Israelites were killed. Joshua was so upset that he tore his clothes and fell facedown before the ark of the Lord. The elders of Israel did the same. Joshua couldn’t understand why the people of Ai defeated the Israelites. Joshua called out to the Lord to find out why the Israelites were chased out of Ai. The Lord told Joshua that the Israelites had sinned. They had taken devoted things that did not belong to them. The devoted things belonged to the Lord. Joshua was instructed to find out who stole the items and kill him. Each tribe had to stand before Joshua to find out who stole the devoted things. Achan admitted to stealing a beautiful robe, silver, and gold and was hiding them in his tent. Messengers were sent to get the stolen items. Achan and his family were stoned to death and then burned. Over Achan, they heaped up a large pile of rocks. For more details, please read Joshua 7:1-26 in the Bible.

Joshua Builds an Altar Joshua 8:30-35 Joshua 8 30
Then Joshua built on Mount Ebal an altar to the LORD, the God of Israel, 31 as Moses the servant of the LORD had commanded the Israelites. He built it according to what is written in the Book of the Law of Moses—an altar of uncut stones, on which no iron tool had been used. On it they offered to the LORD burnt offerings and sacrificed fellowship offerings. 32 There, in the presence of the Israelites, Joshua copied on stones the law of Moses, which he had written. 33All Israel, aliens and citizens alike, with their elders, officials and judges, were standing on both sides of the ark of the covenant of the LORD, facing those who carried it—the priests, who
were Levites. Half of the people stood in front of Mount Gerizim and half of them in front of Mount Ebal, as Moses the servant of the LORD had formerly commanded when he gave instructions to bless the people of Israel. 34 Afterward, Joshua read all the words of the law—the blessings and the curses—just as it is written in the Book of the Law. 35There was not a word of all that Moses had commanded that Joshua did not read to the whole assembly of Israel, including the women and children, and the aliens who lived among them.

Joshua remembered what Moses had instructed the Israelites to do once they crossed the Jordan river. So Joshua built an Altar to the Lord. He built the altar with uncut stone, on which no iron tool had been used. Once the altar was completed, the Israelites offered burnt offerings and fellowship offerings to the Lord. The burnt offerings symbolized the worship and prayers of the Israelites going up to God. Fellowship offerings were to show that the Israeiletes wanted to live at peace with God. On the stones of the altar, Joshua copied the law of Moses. All of the Israelites stood on both sides of the Ark of the Covenant which reminded them of the Lord being with them. When he was finished, Joshua read the all of the words of the law. This was a good reminder to the people to obey the Lord’s commands. Page 139 of 143
Joshua is Tricked Joshua 9:3-27 Joshua 9 3 However, when the people of Gibeon heard what Joshua had done to Jericho and Ai, 4they resorted to a ruse: They went as a delegation whose donkeys were loaded with worn-out sacks and old wineskins, cracked and mended. 5 The men put worn and patched sandals on their feet and wore old clothes. All the bread of their food supply was dry and moldy. 6Then they went to Joshua in the camp at Gilgal and said to him and the men of Israel, “We have come from a distant country; make a treaty with us.” 7 The men of Israel said to the Hivites, “But perhaps you live near us. How then can we make a treaty with you?” 8 “We are your servants,” they said to Joshua. But Joshua asked, “Who are you and where do you come from?” 9 They answered: “Your servants have come from a very distant country because of the fame of the LORD your God. For we have heard reports of him: all that he did in Egypt, 10and all that he did to the two kings of the Amorites east of the Jordan—Sihon king of Heshbon, and Og king of Bashan, who reigned in Ashtaroth. 11 And our elders and all those living in our country said to us, ‘Take provisions for your journey; go and meet them and say to them, “We are your servants; make a treaty with us.”’ 12 This bread of ours was warm when we packed it at home on the day we left to come to you. But now see how dry and moldy it is. 13And these wineskins that we filled were new, but see how cracked they are. And our clothes and sandals are worn out by the very long journey.” 14 The men of Israel sampled their provisions but did not inquire of the LORD. 15Then Joshua made a treaty of peace with them to let them live, and the leaders of the assembly ratified it by oath.
16
Three days after they made the treaty with the Gibeonites, the Israelites heard that they were neighbors, living near them. 17So the Israelites set out and on the third day came to their cities: Gibeon, Kephirah, Beeroth and Kiriath Jearim. 18But the Israelites did not attack them, because the leaders of the assembly had sworn an oath to them by the LORD, the God of Israel. The whole assembly grumbled against the leaders, 19but all the leaders answered, “We have given them our oath by the LORD, the God of Israel, and we cannot touch them now. 20 This is what we will do to them: We will let them live, so that wrath will not fall on us for breaking the oath we swore to them.” 21They continued, “Let them live, but let them be woodcutters and water carriers for the entire community.” So the leaders’ promise to them was kept. 22 Then Joshua summoned the Gibeonites and said, “Why did you deceive us by saying, ‘We live a long way from you,’ while actually you live near us? 23You are now under a curse: You will never cease to serve as woodcutters and water carriers for the house of my God.” 24 They answered Joshua, “Your servants were clearly told how the LORD your God had commanded his servant Moses to give you the whole land and to wipe out all its inhabitants from before you. So we feared for our lives because of you, and that is why we did this. 25 We are now in your hands. Do to us whatever seems good and right to you.” 26 So Joshua saved them from the Israelites, and they did not kill them. 27That day he made the Gibeonites woodcutters and water carriers for the community and for the altar of the LORD at the place the LORD would choose. And that is what they are to this day.

QUESTIONS
JOSHUA IS TRICKED
1. How did the Gibeonites trick Joshua?
The people of Gibeon found out what Joshua had done to Jericho and Ai. They decided to try to trick Joshua. They dressed up in old clothes and brought dry and moldy food with them. The people of Gibeon came to Joshua and said, “We have come from a distant country; make a treaty with us. This bread we brought was warm when we packed it. See how dry and moldy it is now. Our clothes are worn out because of the long journey.” The people of Gibeon wanted Joshua to think that they were from a country far, far away. The men of Israel did not pray to the Lord for guidance. So Joshua made a treaty of peace with them. This meant that the Israelites could not attack the Gibeonites. Three days later, the Israelites found out that they were neighbors with the Gibeonites! Joshua had been tricked! Joshua asked the Gibeonites why they had tricked him. They said, “We heard how the Lord had given you the whole land and that you were supposed to kill all the people who lived in the land. We were afraid. Do to us whatever seems right to you.” So Joshua made the Gibeonites woodcutters and water carriers for the Israelites because they had tricked him. To find out more, read Joshua 9:3-27 in your Bible.
