L os jóv enes podemos ayudar a esa gr an transformación”, dijo Geor ge Ortiz (15) quien integra “Comunidad con Corazón”.

Diversity Conference By Hilbert Morales

Hmorales@el-observador.com

T

he New American Alliance, a spinoff group of the Hispanic Association f or C orporate E xecutive Responsibility (HACER) organized and conducted a “C ORPORATE BO ARD DIVE RSITY CONFERENCE” at U.C. Berkeley School of Business on July 8, 2011. These days most concerned individuals are thinking about ‘jobs’, the national debt, ending the Middle East wars, the housing industry issues, and each of us can name a few more issues near and dear to each of us personally. Let me suggest that you read the full report of this conference posted on www.elobservador.com because this summary does not convey the full importance of the need to have full diversity present on the corporate boards of the top Fortune 500 corporations. In fact, the top 1,000 co rporation boar ds were examined. The feder al go vernment can prime the economy only with r egards to publicly funded infr astructures (education, r oads, bridges, harbors, airports, river dams, etc.). it is the priv ate sector corporations which currently hav e enormous cash reserves stashed in off-shor e banks which ar e not being used “to dev elop markets nor cr eate jobs”. It is these monies which need to be considered w hen d ealing w ith t he c urrent domestic low employment crisis (or, if you will, the high unemployment level). Today Congress is debating the need to ‘extend the debt limit’ a few trillion dollars. The Republican House majority is r eluctant to agr ee to this if coupled with ‘ new tax rates’ for the v ery wealthy and with entitlements (tax credits, subsidies, and other en titlements). What does this have to do with current corporate boards? Everything….because current corporate boards are primarily operated by ‘white males’….only 184 of 1,000 corporate boards have included a woman or any ethnic individual as a m ember. Therefore, current boards make the policy which emphasizes profits made to be distributed to shareholders. In the past, corporations were concerned not only with profits, but also with the d evelopment o f m arkets a nd e mployment of the domestic labor for ce. If these policies are to be changed, then it is essential that corporate boards become diversified enough to include individuals who bring to the board specialty knowledge of developing markets and include the perspectiv es of women, the various races. cultures amd cus-

toms, and get input from the gay, lesbian, and transgender community. Corporations, whose policies are approved by corporate boards, must become very concerned with the maintenance and development of a middle class consumer society on a global basis. To do this, the benefits o f robotics and automation must be balanced w ith the need for individuals to have gainful emplo yment which permits them t o b e c onsumers. E mployment, prouducts & services, markets, and available resources must be all orchestrated to enable all of us to live a good life. A good life cannot be the reward enjoyed on this earth only by the very wealthy, powerful and influential. It is ther efore v ery essential that corpor ate boards become diversified to enable incorporation of new perspectiv es which may help achiev e a new economic equilibrium wherein the gr eatest number enjo y the greatest good that is possible. Gr eed, exploitation, and pr ofiteering must be mitigated for the achiev ement of the gr eatest good. This will not happen soon, but the diversification of corporate boards must become a serious work in pr ogress. American corporate boards can no longer just be managed by White males….they must become diversified. These boar ds cannot focus o n profits alone, but must also become ex cellent stewards of all the r esources this earth provides which they did not cr eate. With input f rom a ll s egments o f h umanity, i t i s very possible that corporations can do much more ‘good’ than just earn profits which are ‘stashed’ until the next great profiteering opportunity presents itself. Corporations need consumers who have discretionary money to spend. Their view of the business universe in which they do business must be expanded by the perspectives and expertise brought to the board room table by individuals coming from diverse sources. The long term resolution of the curr ent ‘job crisis’ will be impacted by what corporate boards are willing to do to become engaged, involved and committed to for the benefit of all. L et’s get corporate boards diversified. Do read the ful l report on ‘Corporate Board Diversity Conference’ and then do your part to implement whatever you may be able to do today . Remember that “God will help those who help themselves as well as their brothers and sisters.” ∆

ders. In response Police Chief Moore has incorporated two Immigration Customs and Enforcement (ICE) agents into the city’s police depar tment as par t of a Depar tment of Homeland Security P rogram called Operation Community Shield. “Our or ganized faith community is very concerned about the violence in our streets. We agr ee with the Chief of Police that gang violence is a problem, bringing in ICE is not the solution,” said Sheilah Lane, PACT member. PACT fears that the pr ogram can exacerbate r acial profiling, increase the already existing distrust between immigrant communities and law enforcement, and, as a result, cause t he c ommunity to b e less safe. They also fear that innocent people will be taken away from the community. “What we’re trying to do is combat a very specific gang problem with a v ery specific small number of people, two people fr om the homeland security depar tment to help us with some gang pr oblems,” said Police Chief Chris Moore. “If I se e for a second they are engaging in anything other than what w e hav e asked th em t o d o, I’ ll a sk them to leave.” There is an understanding that crime is a crucial con-

cern, but some fear that bringing in ICE will not solv e the problem, nor will it help to build trust with law enforcement. The pr ayer vigil focused on the concern that the announcement o f O peration Community S hield h as caused fear in communities, and the communiti es desire to have a relationship built on trust with the San Jose Police Department. “This is a community that cares, this is a community that is watching, and I appreciate the trust that they have, that we’ve built up so far,” said Moore. “I’m hoping that they can help me explain to people what w e’re trying to accomplish.” The criminal enfor cements agents are not administrative r emoval agents of ICE. If they aren’t working out, the Chief will send them back but he has to try everything to solve the gang problem. The addition of agents has been done in Santa Cruz. “We’re losing a lot of young people in our community so its our r esponsibility to take whatev er actions w e can to r educe the violence,” said Moor e. “ At the same time make sure that we don’t have that blurring of the line between i mmigration a nd local enforcement.”

EDUCATION

Navigating the student loan maze: Five questions you must ask

(ARA) ollege costs ar en’t limited to just tuition. You need to consider room and board, books, meals, transportation and more. After you’ve applied for scholarships, grants and feder al loans, it’ s not uncommon to need additional funding for a complete college education. This is where a private student loan can help. If you’re exploring w hat p rivate l oan i s right for you, here are some important questions to ask so you can make the right decision for today and your financial future. What is the interest rate? You must decide if y ou want a fixed-rate loan or a variable-rate loan. A fixed-rate loan will typically have a higher interest rate, but the rate will not fluctuate o ver the life of the loan, so you’re protected from large interest rate swings. For example, U.S. Bank offers two types of student loans. The fixed-rate student loan option offe rs an inter est r ate of 7.99 percent (7.80 to 8.46 percent APR) for appr oved applicants. This pr ovides security because the inter est rate will never change. The variable loan rate option has no fees and can range anywher e fr om a 3.45 percent to a 10.95 percent interest rate (3.39 to 10.22 per cent

APR)., This rate and APR may increase after consummation and can change over the life of the loan. All applications ar e subject to normal cr edit approval. It’s important to weigh your options to determine what is right for you. Is co-signing beneficial? Because eligibility, interest rates and reserve fees for private loans are based on your credit, a co-signer may help you get the loan y ou need at the rates you want. This is particularly true for y ounger students who may not hav e an established credit history. A co-signer may be a parent, guardian or close relative who has an established credit history and stable income. It’ s impor tant for any co-signer to understan d that if the student borr ower cannot pay the loan for any reason, the co-signer is then r esponsible for any remaining loan obligations. What can you afford to borrow? It can be difficult to predict the future, but one way to help determine w hat amount you should b orrow i s t o e stimate your future earnings. It’s wise to be c onservative i n y our e stimates. For help determining average earnings for specific careers, visit the U.S. Depar tment of Labor, Bureau of Labor

Statistics website. A good general rule to follow is your monthly student loan payment should not be more than 8 percent of your monthly salary. Remember that if you borrow too much and have late or missed payments, this will be reflected on your credit history (and any co-signer’s credit history). What are the repayment terms? Every l oan ha s d ifferent terms and it’s important to understand all the detai ls before you sign the paperwork. Some things to consider include how long you have to pay back the entire loan, is there a grace period betw een gr aduation and when payments star t, and is there a discount for an y autopayment plans? If y ou don ’t completely understand the terms, make sure to ask lots of questions. Any time y ou take out a college loan, only take out as much money as y ou need for education-related expenses. Start by learning your options when y ou apply at www .usbank.com/student-loans; an application takes five minutes or less. Once you find the right loan for y ou, you’ll be able to get the degree you want and set yourself up for financial success in the future. ∆

alancing work and the commitment of earning an advanced degree can be daunting. But it is a reality many adult learners face as they continue their education while juggling personal, family and financial responsibilities. The good news is that there are many tips and resources available to help ease str ess and make balancing work and school manageable. 1. Capitalize on flexible class scheduling. An increasing number of colleges and universities are tailoring education to suit working students’ schedules. DeVry University, for example, offers flexible scheduling in a “mix and match” format that allows students to enroll in a combination of onsite or online courses during the day or evening, based on convenience. 2. Make a schedule and stay organized. A calendar t hat o utlines u pcoming w ork a nd school p rojects, m eetings a nd d eadlines takes l ittle time to create and can m ake a busy schedule feel under control. “Time management is an essential quality and core competency for most professionals, and this will be a good test of one’s mettle,”

explained Jeffrey Greenberg, director of career services for DeVry University. “This skill gets easier o ver t ime a nd w ill e nsure t hat y our work does not pile up , preventing you from meeting deadlines.” 3. Address your stress. The weight of multiple obligations can be overwhelming. It’s important to take br eaks to obtain a fr esh perspective. Exercise and social inter action provide the perfect oppor tunity to r elieve stress a nd refocus your t houghts, a llowing you to return to coursework with a clear mind and renewed sense of energy. 4. Take adv antage of y our school’ s r esources. The network of classmates and professors y our s chool o ffers c an p rovide support and advice for balancing work and school. The economic recession has led many schools to launch car eer ser vices depar tments or strengthen existing ones. 5. Create a support network. Harness the support of friends and family, and see if they can help you accomplish your goals. This support could be something as simpl e as meeting w ith a r oommate t o p lan h ousehold chores or meals for the month. It is important to remember that the hard work and sacrifice r equired to balance work and school often lead to career success.

See the Light: Protect Your Eyes From (NewsUSA) s you slather on sunscreen to protect your skin this summer, don’t forget to protect your eyes. Unlike other parts of your body, your eye’s lens does not repair itself when damaged by the sun’s rays — eventually this can lead to permanent eye damage. “While intense UV exposur e can cause temporary ‘sunburn’ on the ey e’s surface, an ev en graver concern i s c umulative, l ong-term e ffects,” s aid Richard P. Mills, M D in Seattle, Wash. “UV-A and B rays actually penetrate the cornea and damage the lens and retina, leading to increased risk for cataract and macular degeneration, so protection and getting an eye exam are vitally important.” EyeCare America, a public service program of the Foundation of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, provides eye exams and care at no out-of-pocket cost to people 65 and older. The eye exams are provided by a corps of nearl y 7,000 volunteer ophthalmologists across the U.S. and in Puerto Rico. To see if you are eligible to receive a referral for an eye exam and care, visit www.eyecareamerica.org. This online referral center also enables friends and family members to find out instantly if their loved ones are eligible to be matched with one of E yeCare America’s volunteer ophthalmologists. “I’m a low-income senior who needed an eye

exam after many years of neglecting myself. Economically embarrassed, I was referred by EyeCare America, a nd r eceived e xcellent, f ast an d c ourteous service,” said, Mr. Hansen, a recent EyeCare America patient. “I worked hard all my life and never dreamed I would be in a position of not being able to affor d a simple exam.” To protect your eyes this summer, EyeCare America offers the following advice: When to wear sunglasses Sunglasses should be worn anytime you are outdoors, particularly under these circumstances: • During the summer, when the level of ultraviolet radiation (UVA and UVB) is at least thr ee times higher than during the winter; • When at the beach or in the water; • When participating in winter sports, especially at high altitudes; • When using medications that can cause photosensitivity. Taking measures to protect your eyes from the sun, as well as getting eye conditions detected early through an eye exam, can help slow or prevent total vision loss from diseases such as macular degeneration and cataracts. But not everyone has insurance or can afford eye exams, so visit eyecareamerica.org to see if you are eligible for an eye exam and care at no out-of-pocket cost.

n July 13, the Therapeutic Recreation Program held its annual barbecue at Santa Clar a Valley Medical Center (SCVMC) in San Jose. “All the proceeds from this event go towards the patient pr ograms we do. We do a lot of outings, we do a lot of education about life after injury,” said Scott Shields, recreation therapy supervisor. Recreational pr ograms incl ude wheelchair sports and community outings. Patients with spinal cord or brain injuries go out to dinner, the mo vies, or San Jose Giants games. The funds raised are also used to pur chase adaptive equipment., which ar e not covered by insurance or current funding. “They love it, they absolutely love it,” said Shields. The rehabilitation center treats more tan 550 patients ev ery y ear, helping them develop the skills needed to get closer to independence.

“They really push you. Its very important to go to all the classes to benefit fr om every aspect of the program,” said Nicholas Smith, rehab patient. Smith suffered a motorcycle accident that left hi m par alyzed. He shatter ed his arm, broke his neck and injured his spinal cord. “I’ve been to a dinner and a car show outing. They were great, anytime you can get out is great and it teaches you.” Said Smith. Activities ar e impor tant in helping patients develop a healthy and satisfying leisure time lifestyle. Throughout the outing, patients learn how to deal with anything that comes up. Staff is there to assist and instruct in case they can’t figure something out. The barbecue used to be a celebr ation and in the last coupl e of y ears it became a fundraiser due to budget cuts. It’s also a way to celebrate the r ehab patients, who got to enjoy a hot dog, chips, and a drink in the front lawn of SCVMC.
