San José se une a la “Ocupación de Wall Street” Por Rosario Vital El Observador

H

ace tres semanas una docena de estudiantes universitarios iniciaron una protesta denominada “Ocupación de Wall Street”. Esta protesta se ha extendido por lo menos a 83 ciudades en los Estados Unidos, entre ellas San Francisco y San José donde jóvenes continúan organizándose para protestar contra la desigualdad y la injusticia.

Las redes sociales movilizaron a decenas de personas en la ciudad de San José e hicieron una demostración en el Valle del Silicio. Con pancartas como “Ocupemos San Jose” o “Banqueros de Wall Street han robado nuestro futuro” personas dedicaron un par de horas a su domingo para alzar su voz de protesta.

La reunión fue convocada por un grupo de estudiantes de De Anza College.

“Estamos aquí para expresar nuestra solidaridad con los

La ocupación de Wall Street, que en un principio parecía enfocarse contra el sistema financiero en Estados Unidos, se ha convertido en una protesta sin líderes que lucha en general contra la injusticia y la falta de oportunidades, contra la corrupción, el racismo, contra la guerra entre otras cosas.

El movimiento se está extendiendo y la razón es porque los estadounidenses están cansados de la falta de empleo.

“Economía Pacífica” “Necesitamos una economía pacífica. Debemos negarnos al militarismo y lo-

grar que nuestros jóvenes tengan oportunidades”, dijo David Ledesma, un activista de San José que en los últimos años se ha dedicado a que los jóvenes se informen sobre el sistema de reclutamiento a militares antes de que tomen la decisión de sumarse a las filas militares.

“Lo que tenemos todos los manifestantes en común es que somos el 99 por ciento de la población que no tolerará por más tiempo la avaricia y la corrupción del uno por ciento”, afirmó Jon Chaney estudiante del Colegio Comunitario de De Anza y lo dijo en referencia al porcentaje de millonarios que existe en Estados Unidos.Δ

Alearn Foundation Helps Latino Students T he recent “College Catalyst Breakfast,” which was held at the Sharon Heights Golf and Country Club on September 28th was attended by 220 supporters. Of great interest was an inspirational speech given by featured speaker, Dr. Emmett Carson, CEO and President, Silicon Valley Community Foundation, on “The Importance of Education in Transforming our Region”.

Dr. Carson described the current education system of San Mateo and Santa Clara Counties as being so complex that it was difficult for anyone to know who is accountable and responsible for effective teaching and parent-school relationships. There are over 50 school districts in these two counties, each with its superintendent and executive/administrative staff. The result is that

local education systems are ‘very top heavy’ and need to be simplified. The challenge is in the accomplishment of that goal if our children are to be educated for their futures in the current global economy, which requires that America, especially Silicon Valley, effectively teach its own youth to levels of education and expertise which permit effective competitive superiority.

Kathryn Hanson, PhD., founder and CEO, of ALearn Foundation just some five years ago, did an analysis establishing that proficiency in math was an indicator of future college success. So ALearn focused on remedial math training needed by students who were not being encouraged to learn math at existing schools.

ALearn’s mission is to help under-represented students get to and succeed in college.

Its academic and enrichment programs increase achievement and thereby raise student’s aspirations for college success in their future.

ALearn’s focus has been on Latino students who become exposed to effective enjoyable

math learning programs which results in an enthusiastic and successful outcome. Over 4,000 students have taken summer remedial programs offered by ALearn. This “College Catalyst Breakfast” meeting was a joyful celebration of their success in a math acceleration program plus two additional programs which encouraged students to succeed by staying in school. The two programs are “Catalyst to High School” and “Zoomz”. In the Zoomz program students interact with college students on ALearn’s social network for mentoring and advice regarding how to prepare for, and succeed, in college.

Eastside Union School District’s Overfelt (152 students) and Yerba Buena (40 students) participated successfully in these three programs. A student panel was part of the program. The students presented their personal experiences wit enthusiastic feelings very well.

EO will post a link to ALearn’s website to permit the entire community to view the videos of the student panel, Dr. Emmett Carson’s comments,

and comments by Dr. Kathryn Hanson and Board Chair Diane Frankle, Esq. Judge for yourselves what happens when effective teaching is provided to our Latino students.

One might ask “Why don’t all school districts elevate the learning performance of their school’s students?” A key element is that superior teaching occurs when the teacher or mentor takes a personal interest in the learning needs of a student and is able to provide positive remedial support. The students respond to the expression of interest, and the challenge to achieve excellence, when they are exposed to the successful learning methods which exist today but are not uniformly made available.

An essential factor to student success is the involvement of parents who take time to learn and know what is going on with their kids while they are attending school. Parents of kids who successfully learn are engaged and informed. It is the parents, as guides of their own kids, who must insist on accountability

Over 70% of ALearn’s students were placed in higher level math courses as an outcome of its math acceleration program. In many ways Dr. Hanson’s efforts are supported by the Chair of Alearn’s Board, Ms. Diane Frankle, Esq., and all board members. his week the world was told that Steve Jobs (1955-2011) had died of pancreatic cancer. In 2009, he had a liver transplant. He is survived by his wife and four children. The world has lost a creative innovative genius.

At the 2005 Stanford University Commencement ceremony, Steve Jobs stated the following prophetic words: “Remembering that I will be dead soon is the most important tool I encountered which helped me make the most important decisions in life. Almost everything, all expectations, all pride, all fear of embarrassment of failure falls away in the face of death leaving only what is truly important.

To die is the best way I know to avoid the trap that you have something to lose. You are already naked. There is no reason not to follow your heart.

I recall, as does the EO staff, back in 1987, when El Observador became the first Hispanic owned and operated publication to use word processing and graphics technology in this area to produce the product known as EL OBSERVADOR. Rebecca Valdez, the editor at that time and Monica Amador, Director of Advertising, complained, “We have no time to study and master it! My reply was “Just go do it because the MacIntosh is very user friendly.

The next issue of EO was produced totally using the computer, which enabled the discarding of glues, solvents, set-up boards, etc. Now, almost anyone with a computer can access all the knowledge that is recorded and made available on Wikipedia and other Internet sites. Access to information by anyone is now possible if you have a computer. What a change!

“NO ONE WANTS TO DIE. EVEN PEOPLE WHO WANT TO GO TO HEAVEN DON’T WANT TO DIE TO GET THERE. YET DEATH IS THE DESTINATION WE ALL SHARE. No one has ever escaped it. And that is as it should be and death is the best invention of life. It is life’s change agent. It clears out the old to make room for the new. And right now the new is you (this year’s graduates).

In his memory, we, as a community must address the sad state of our local educational institutions, which are not preparing Latino youth for full participation in future endeavors. Too many of our local public schools do not use IT and computers to the fullest advantage possible. Not enough of IT and computer assisted education is used to prepare our youth for future success. As a community we must address that challenge by looking at everything and changing it to focus on obtaining the best education for our youth. The use of special programs such as ALearn and Rocketship charter schools is not enough. In his memory, we must begin using computerized education programs to enhance traditional education processes very soon. May Steve Jobs’ soul rest in peace. May we remember and be grateful for his innovative genius, which continues to change our world.

Despite all of medical information and its technology, Steve Jobs passed on. We, who are of Mexican heritage, have traditionally celebrated the “Day of the Dead (Halloween, “El Dia de los Muertos ) and this year it would be appropriate to remember Steve Jobs and contemplate his soul, his creative genius, and his contributions, which transformed our world by making the personal computer and its technology available to all.

State Attorney General Harris breaks with 50-state bank settlement negotiations

his week, California Attorney General Kamila Harris announced that her office is breaking from pending 50-state bank settlement negotiations over unfair foreclosures.

Settlement negotiations between the 50 attorney generals and the nation’s five largest banks -- Bank of America, JPMorgan Chase and Co., Wells Fargo, Citigroup and Ally Financial, began last fall. Beginning over allegations of robo-signing, or the practice of bank employees notarizing or signing sworn documents without verifying or understanding them, they later expanded to include other abuses related to mortgage servicing and foreclosure practices.

"It's a really important point to recognize this is not just about the person who is losing their home, it is also about those who are keeping their homes," said Attorney General Harris.

In 2010, nearly 4 million foreclosure filings were reported. Currently there are 2.2 million homes that are unable to meet the requirements of their mortgage, 55% of the foreclosures are Latino. There are 50,000 homes that have been foreclosed. The homes that are being foreclosed not only affect families, but they also affect the value of the homes nearby and impact the commu-

nity they are in.

“We applaud Attorney General Harris for pulling out of this proposed “settlement.”

We believe a thorough investigation that leads to real relief for California homeowners is what we need,” said Richard Hopson, Chair of the Board of Alliance of Californians for Community Empowerment (ACCE). “The banks need to pay for what they have done.”

Harris has found out that there is a residual issue which is that of the predators who are taking advantage of those homeowners that don’t know what to do or where to go.

Those predators take on the form of broke creditors or attorneys, who pretend to help the homeowner out of their foreclosure, but they are charging the homeowner a fee and producing nothing in return.

The Attorney General has proposed a three courses of action that includes litigation, investigation, and reforming the system (involving forms). There will be investigations that are necessary to disclose and uncover the activities that led to the situation, as well as potentially litigating a legislative fix.

“As it relates in particular to the settlement negotiations of the banks, I decided that California will chart its own course and independent path that will include perusing the truth,” said Harris.

Now, thanks to an initiative by ASCD, one of America’s leading education associations, anyone interested in preparing today’s youth for success can check whether schools make the grade.

“The Grade Your School resource really gets you thinking about what an effective, even ideal, learning environment should be.

I will use this tool to open the conversation with my child’s school on how parents could work collaboratively with school officials and others to create an even better learning community, says Sioban Maslar, Silver Spring, Md. Composed of 14 short multiple choice questions, the Grade Your School tool helps anyone quickly find out how well a school and community are doing to prepare children for the future. ASCD then provides a report card and some tips on how to use the results.

“Each community has educators, families, administrators and counselors working hard to support the success of each learner, says Molly McCloskey, managing director of Whole Child Programs at ASCD. “The Grade Your School tool is a starting point for anyone to check how these groups are working to support the whole child approach to education, and open a dialogue about how to work together.

A

lmost a month ago I was waving a huge silk flag, celebrating Mexico’s Independence Day at the PAL stadium with over 7,000 other people.

It’s the second time I attended this huge cultural event that only keeps growing. All throughout the day there were performances. One of my favorites was the all-girl band that got the crowd dancing and singing along with them. There were also mariachi bands, folklorico, and a grito con-

test (when they shout Viva Mexico).

There was a Culture Camp area for the little ones, where they were offered a chance to make red, green, and white flowers, along with paper flags. It’s touching to see children learn about their culture during a major event like Mexican Independence Day. Parents seemed to enjoy having that time to spend with them, explaining to them what it means and encouraging them to be proud to be Mexican American.

All along the stadium were other booths, like the anchors from local Spanish lan-

guage TV channels and members of print media. One of my favorite booths was Safeway’s. I enjoy free stuff so when I realized that Safeway was giving away samples of their products, I grabbed my brother and headed that way. I had all the samples I could handle and even got a calendar that I won by playing basketball.

The Consul General of Mexico in San Jose was also giving away educational books first to sixth grade level to children or anyone interested in learning about the country’s landscape and traditions. Some

families visited the booths, some ate traditional Mexican food, and others watched every performance. They all had one thing in common. They were waiting patiently for the Grito.

The moment finally came. The new consul Carlos Martinez Ponce presented the flag to the crowd. They remembered the heroes and sang the national anthem together, while fireworks were going off.

Mexicanos inscribanse para votar Por Rosario Vital El Observador os consejeros electorales del Instituto Federal Electoral (IFE), Francisco Guerrero y Marco Antonio Baños, visitaron las ciudades de San Francisco y San José, para informar a los mexicanos radicados en Estados Unidos del inicio de registro en la Lista Nominal de Electores Residentes en el Extranjero (LNERE).

Los representantes informaron a los mexicanos radicados en estas ciudades que tal como lo indica la ley, hasta el 15 de enero, podrán inscribirse para ejercer su derecho ciudadano en la elección

presidencial.

“Quien no se inscriba durante este periodo no podrá participar en las elecciones. Más adelante llegará la boleta y esa boleta tendrá que enviarse y llegar a México por lo menos un día antes de la jornada electoral, que es el primero de julio. Nosotros revisamos que la documentación esté en orden y luego se puede votar posteriormente”, explicó Guerrero.

Hay un número relevante de mexicanos en EU. Hay alrededor de 12 millones y de ellos 4 a 5 mi llones tienen credencial para votar.

En las últimas elecciones de 2006 solo votaron 32 mil personas. Fue la primera vez, esperamos que

este número se incremente con toda la tecnología que hay.

“Las personas solo tienen que descargar un formulario de la página del IFE en internet, (www.votoextranjero.mx) o bien acudir a las oficinas consulares, habrá personal del IFE que ayudará a personas a bajar los formularios, los cuales se llenarán con letra de molde o a máquina, para enviarla a las instalaciones del ente a través de un porte postal pagado por el Instituto”, explicó Baños a EO. Las boletas llegarán entre el 15 de abril y 15 de mayo al domicilio que registró en los formularios y tienen que hacerlas llegar hasta el 30 de junio del próximo año.

Las personas que quieran sufragar en el mes de julio de 2012, tendrán que anexar al formulario copia de su credencial para votar con fotografía firmada al derecho y al revés, incluidas aquellas con terminación 03, informaron los representantes del IFE. En el formulario, los mexicanos radicados en el exterior deberán señalar algún domicilio cierto y bajo protesta de decir verdad, ya que posterior al proceso de inscripción se les hará llegar la boleta electoral para que puedan votar, igualmente con porte pagado por el IFE. a Fiscal General del estado de California Kamala Harris dijo que no estĂĄ acuerdo sobre los abusos de exclusiĂłn que los funcionarios federales y los abogados del estado general estĂĄn negociando con los principales bancos de Estados Unidos. El anuncio lo hizo en una conferencia telefĂłnica.

El acuerdo suponĂ­a resolver las quejas de las malas prĂĄcticas de la hipoteca y ejecuciĂłn hipotecaria, incluyendo la falsificaciĂłn de documentos conocidos como “robo-firmaâ€?la aprobaciĂłn de los documentos de las ejecuciones hipotecarias sin leerlos.

Sin embargo, Harris dijo que el acuerdo estĂĄ pendie nte “es inadecuado para los propietarios de California y da a los funcionarios del banco demasiada inmunidad legalâ€?.

El Estado pide, como parte de la soluciĂłn “ justificar una conducta que no ha sido debidamente investigadaâ€?, dijo la fiscal de California.

What is the most important information I should know about DIOVAN? Taking DIOVAN during pregnancy can cause injury and even death to your unborn baby. If you get pregnant, stop taking DIOVAN and call your doctor right away.

Talk to your doctor about other ways to lower your blood pressure if you plan to become pregnant.

What is DIOVAN? DIOVAN is a prescription medicine called an angiotensin receptor blocker (ARB). It is used in adults to: U lower high blood pressure (hypertension) in adults and children, 6 to 16 years of age.

U treat heart failure in adults. In these patients, DIOVAN may lower the need for hospitalization that happens from heart failure.

U improve the chance of living longer after a heart attack (myocardial infarction) in adults.

DIOVAN is not for children under 6 years of age or children with certain kidney problems.

High Blood Pressure (Hypertension). Blood pressure is the force in your blood vessels when your heart beats and when your heart rests. You have high blood pressure when the force is too much. DIOVAN can help your blood vessels relax so your blood pressure is lower.

High blood pressure makes the heart work harder to pump blood throughout the body and causes damage to the blood vessels. If high blood pressure is not treated, it can lead to stroke, heart attack, heart failure, kidney failure and vision problems.

Heart Failure occurs when the heart is weak and cannot pump enough blood to your lungs and the rest of your body. Just walking or moving can make you short of breath, so you may have to rest a lot.

Heart Attack (Myocardial Infarction): A heart attack is caused by a blocked artery that results in damage to the heart muscle.

What should I tell my doctor before taking DIOVAN? Tell your doctor about all your medical conditions including whether you: U have any allergies. See the end of this leaflet for a complete list of ingredients in DIOVAN. U have a heart condition U have liver problems U have kidney problems U are pregnant or planning to become pregnant. See “What is the most important information I should know about DIOVAN?�

U are breast-feeding. It is not known if DIOVAN passes into your breast milk. You and your doctor should decide if you will take DIOVAN or breast-feed, but not both. Talk with your doctor about the best way to feed your baby if you take DIOVAN. Tell your doctor about all the medicines you take including prescription and nonprescription medicines, vitamins and herbal supplements. Especially tell your doctor if you take: U other medicines for high blood pressure or a heart problem U water pills (also called “diuretics�)

Keep a list of your medicines with you to show to your doctor and pharmacist when a new medicine is prescribed. Talk to your doctor or pharmacist before you start taking any new medicine. Your doctor or pharmacist will know what medicines are safe to take together.

How should I take DIOVAN? U Take DIOVAN exactly as prescribed by your doctor.

U For treatment of high blood pressure, take DIOVAN one time each day, at the same time each day.

U If your child cannot swallow tablets, or if tablets are not available in the prescribed strength, your pharmacist will mix DIOVAN as a liquid suspension for your child. If your child switches between taking the tablet and the suspension, your doctor will adjust the dose as needed. Shake the bottle of suspension well for at least 10 seconds before pouring the dose of medicine to give to your child.

U For adult patients with heart failure or who have had a heart attack, take DIOVAN two times each day, at the same time each day. Your doctor may start you on a low dose of DIOVAN and may increase the dose during your treatment.

U DIOVAN can be taken with or without food.

U If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it is close to your next dose, do not take the missed dose. Take the next dose at your regular time.

U If you take too much DIOVAN, call your doctor or Poison Control Center, or go to the nearest hospital emergency room.

What are the possible side effects of DIOVAN? DIOVAN may cause the following serious side effects: Injury or death to an unborn baby. See “What is the most important information I should know about DIOVAN?�

Low Blood Pressure (Hypotension). Low blood pressure is most likely to happen if you also take water pills, are on a low-salt diet, get dialysis treatments, have heart problems, or get sick with vomiting or diarrhea. Lie down, if you feel faint or dizzy.

Call your doctor right away.

Kidney problems. Kidney problems may get worse in people that already have kidney disease. Some people will have changes on blood tests for kidney function and may need a lower dose of DIOVAN. Call your doctor if you get swelling in your feet, ankles, or hands, or unexplained weight gain. If you have heart failure, your doctor should check your kidney function before prescribing DIOVAN. The most common side effects of DIOVAN used to treat people with high blood pressure include: UĂŠÂ…i>`>VÂ…iĂŠ UĂŠvÂ?Ă•ĂŠĂƒĂžÂ“ÂŤĂŒÂœÂ“Ăƒ ĂŠ UĂŠĂƒĂŒÂœÂ“>V…Ê­>L`œ“ˆ˜>Â?ĂŠÂŤ>ˆ˜Ž UĂŠ`ÂˆĂ˘Ă˘ÂˆÂ˜iĂƒĂƒĂŠ UĂŠĂŒÂˆĂ€i`˜iĂƒĂƒ Side effects were generally mild and brief. How do I store DIOVAN? U Store DIOVAN tablets at room temperature between 59° to 86°F (15°C-30°C).

U Keep DIOVAN tablets in a closed container in a dry place.

U Store bottles of DIOVAN suspension at room temperature less than 86°F (30°C) for up to 30 days, or refrigerate between 35°F-46°F (2°C-8°C) for up to 75 days.

proper arch support, a firm heel and thick, flexible soles. * Wear clothes that will keep you dry and comfortable. Look for synthetic fabrics that absorb sweat and remove it from your skin. * Divide your walk into sections. Warm up by walking slowly for five minutes. Then, increase your speed and do a fast walk. Finally, cool down by walking slowly again for five minutes. Do light stretching after your warm-up and cool-down. * Try to walk as often as possible. To avoid stiff or sore muscles and joints, start gradually.

Over several weeks, begin walking faster, going farther, and walking for longer periods of time.

Aim for 30 minutes of walking a day on most, if not all, days of the week. * Set goals and rewards. A goal might be participating in a fun walk or walking continuously for 30 minutes. Reward yourself when you meet a goal, but not with high-calorie foods.

Los organizadores explicaron que este festival surgió por la inquietud de compartir con el público joven su música y con aquella que no ha tenido oportunidad de conocer a las agrupaciones, las cuales son consideradas entre las más importantes del género.

Además de contar con muchos artistas de otros países como Colombia y de República Dominicana, también México presentó a Santa, que es una de las pocas exponentes mujeres de salsa.

Para mayo de 2012 se prepara también la primera edición el Rumba Fest, el cual estará dedicado a alguna agrupación, en este caso a El Gran Combo, que festejará medio siglo de música: “Estamos pensando que sea un festival de talla internacional y tenemos en la mira a ocho figuras que tienen gran peso dentro de la escena”, adelantó.
