ACLU Sues Sonoma Co. Sheriff and ICE for Unlawful Detentions and Racial Profiling

AN FRANCISCO— A federal judge in San Francisco issued an order Friday that an American Civil Liberties Union of Northern California’s (ACLU-NC) lawsuit charging unlawful collaboration between the Sonoma County Sheriff’s Department and the U.S. Bureau of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to unlawfully target, arrest, and detain Latinos in Sonoma County can move forward.

“As the nation repudiates Arizona’s racial profiling law, we continue to challenge the same type of profiling in our own backyard,” said Julia Harumi Mass, ACLU-NC staff attorney. “No matter where they happen, violations of fair and common-sense legal protections like due process put all U.S. residents at risk – citizen and non-citizen alike.”

The lawsuit charges that the Sonoma Sheriff’s department and its officers have collaborated with ICE to stop and search people who appear to be Latino, interrogate them about their immigration status based on their perceived race, and detain them in the county jail without lawful authority. The Sheriff’s Department and ICE have failed to notify individuals who they have targeted of their rights under the law and the charges against them, among other violations of due process.

Sheriff’s Department and ICE motions for reconsideration of a March 10, 2010 ruling that allowed the plaintiffs to seek evidence in support of their constitutional and statutory claims.

Leaving in place an unchallenged legal ruling that the Sonoma County Sheriff’s and ICE’s use of immigration detainers was not per se unlawful, this order gives the green light to plaintiff Committee for Immigrant Rights of Sonoma County’s claims that the County and ICE are violating equal protection, due process, search and seizure, and statutory requirements in their use of immigration detainers to arrest persons on suspected civil—as opposed to criminal— immigration violations and hold them in the county jail without criminal charges.

“Public safety and crime fighting suffer when we overburden local and state law enforcement agencies with federal immigration authority,” said Richard Coshnear of the Committee for Immigrant Rights of Sonoma County, a group devoted to educating the public about immigrants’ legal rights under the Fourth, Fifth, and Sixth Amendments of the U.S. Constitution. “Instead of making our communities safer, the Sheriff’s actions distract deputies from their crime-fighting duties, create a climate of fear, and decrease the willingness of residents to report crimes.”

Union Members Are Key To Balancing the Deficit Budget

DREAM Act:

¿Cuántos Eric Balderas antes de que el Senado actúe?

By Hilbert Morales - El Observador Por Maribel Hastings America’s Voice ASHINGTON, D.C. – “Tengo la aspiración de encontrar una cura para el cáncer… Ojalá algún día pueda lograrlo porque de esa manera me gustaría contribuir”.

Esto dijo a America’s Voice Eric Balderas, de 19 años de edad, un estudiante de biología celular y molecular en la Universidad de Harvard, detenido por las autoridades migratorias el 7 de junio cuando se disponía a viajar de San Antonio, Texas, a Boston, Massachusetts. Fue a Texas a visitar a su familia. Regresaba a Boston a seguir estudiando. Perdió su pasaporte mexicano y traía consigo la matrícula consular y su identificación de estudiante.

Ahora encara una potencial deportación.

Su audiencia ante un juez de inmigración será el 6 de julio, casi exactamente a un año de la fecha en la cual el gobierno retrasó la deportación de otro estudiante, Walter Lara, quien como Eric acaparó la atención nacional con su lucha para evitar su repatriación a un lugar que no conocía; un año en el cual otros jóvenes han enfrentado órdenes de deportación o han vivido con el temor a enca rarlas; un año en el cual estos jóvenes han desafiado la deportación para atraer atención a su causa participando en actos de desobe diencia civil o caminando 1,500 millas de Miami a Washington, D.C. para que los escuchen. Un año en el cual no ha habido ni reforma migratoria con DREAM Act, ni DREAM Act. Balderas indicó que precisamente espera que su caso contribuya a ejercer la presión necesaria para que el Senado apruebe la medida DREAM Act que concedería una vía de legalización a los estudiantes que como él prosigan estudios universitarios, o que se enlisten en el servicio militar.

“Ojalá que la gente que me apoya llame a los senadores y a los representantes para poder lograr algo porque la DREAM Act es lo que nos salvaría a todos. Lo que pase durante mi audiencia, sea bueno o malo, es sólo una solución temporal porque no me permitiría obtener mi residencia”, agregó.

Cada año se gradúan de las escuelas secundarias del país 65,000 jóvenes sin documentos para seguir estudiando o trabajando.

quedaron más allá del tiempo autorizado por sus visas por su propia cuenta. Los trajeron sus padres o familiares.

Balderas fue traído por su mamá desde México cuando tenía cuatro años de edad. Escaparon de una situación de violencia doméstica.

“No tengo ningún recuerdo de México.

No recuerdo no hablar el inglés. Todo lo que sé, todo lo que he visto es de Estados Unidos”, señaló.

La medida DREAM Act se presentó ori ginalmente hace casi una década y volvió a someterse en esta sesión del Congreso. En el Senado presentaron el proyecto S. 729 los senadores Richard Durbin y Richard Lugar, demócrata de Illinois y republicano de Indiana, respectivamente. La medida tiene 39 coauspiciadores. El proyecto bipartidista acompañante en la Cámara Baja es el H.R. 1751 y cuenta, hasta ahora, con 120 coauspiciadores.

El grupo de Facebook que se creó en apoyo a Balderas, ya cuenta con miles de seguidores. Un denominador común de muchos de los comentarios es el argumento básico de que se trata de un joven traído por su familia a Estados Unidos cuando apenas tenía cuatro años; un joven cuya inteligencia y talento lo llevan a ser aceptado con una beca total por una de las universidades privadas más prestigiosas del país y del mundo. Como dice su página de Facebook, “su deportación nos privará a todos de un potencial ciudadano cuya valentía, compromiso y deseo sincero de ayudar a otros a través de la ciencia sólo hará de nuestra nación un mejor lugar”.

La Universidad de Harvard emitió una declaración señalando que “Eric Balderas ya ha demostrado la disciplina y la ética laboral requerida para el riguroso trabajo universitario y al igual que muchos de nuestros estudiantes de licenciatura, ha expresado su interés de marcar una diferencia en el mundo”.

D

uring the past several decades organized labor (i.e., unions and professional associations) representing public employees (police, firefighters, social service workers, public health workers, teachers, etc.) have experienced the best of times as labor negotiations led to contracts which provided for generous hourly wages, health benefits, and retirement plans. These union contracts were negotiated during very favorable economies plus the synergistic alignment of both the public’s and unions’ quest for transparency and accountability in all governmental affairs.

This situation applies to both the County of Santa Clara and the City of San Jose. It also applies to many state and federal agencies. From this point on, the focus of these comments applies to the local county and city jurisdictions. Both jurisdictions face serious deficits ($250 million and $120 million respectively).

These deficits, when analyzed categorically, reveal that 70% or more of the deficit is related to the cost of employee wage, retirement and health care benefits which were negotiated when the economy was healthy and robust.

Today that is definitely not the case, and has been so for several years. Management’s approach seems to fall into three actions: 1) Reduce the labor force and therefore the personnel costs incurred. This results in service cuts. 2) Define more work which can be outsourced to the private sector using a competitive bid process. Presumably lower costs of services results. And 3) Ask the union leadership to voluntarily agree to a reduction of hourly wages, benefits, and retirement programs. Of course, union leadership has opposed these solutions.

It is essential that public employee unions find some way to maximize current employment levels without exceeding available funding levels. In the past union leadership has used their clout to have legislation passed which today impedes the informed involvement of the public.

Unions have favored keeping contract negotiation information away from public scrutiny and inquiry. However, that information has become public as a consequence of lawsuits by a nonprofit organization called the “First Amendment Coalition.” Their website is www.firstamendmentcoalition.org. Go there for information which provides an compelling perspective.

ing up to Unions” authored by San Jose Mayor Chuck Reed (San Jose Mercury News, Editorial page, June 13, 2010). Here we are reminded that in his 2007 State of the City address, Mayor Reed stated, “We cannot become a great city unless we eliminate our structural budget deficit. This is the greatest challenge. The budget deficit is public enemy number one, an enemy that will steal our hopes and kill our dreams of becoming a great city if we ignore it.”

Well, hardly any progress has been made in the past several years. Nothing will happen until the unions step forward with a method of maximizing the number of employees who ‘stay on the job’. It seems obvious that the union membership must convey to their leadership that sharing jobs is preferable to layoffs.

To avoid layoffs, the union membership might want to consider sharing the work that can be paid for by the monies available. It is not an option to demand full employment when tax revenues are not realized in the needed quantity because of a nonperforming economy. Those who pay taxes are experiencing total unemployment (12%+), underemployment, and reduced taxable revenues. The Mayor makes a good point: voter’s are aware of those elected officials who favor accountability and fiscal responsibility. Unionbacked candidates did not fare well in the recent primary election.

If unions representing public employees are to retain their clout, their membership must support their negotiating leadership to fully participate in accepting reduced employment levels forced on all of us by an economy that is recovering from a ‘near collapse’.If your union leadership will not provide a formula for sharing the work, then the membership must push their leadership towards a viable option.

The outcome is that when all agree to accept a lower income level, more, if not all, union members may remain employed. Job-sharing is a better option than having a few become totally unemployed. Think about this option. The choice is yours. If you do not make that choice, then the City Council will vote to do what it must do to reach a balanced budget. Keep in mind that personnel expenses are 70% of the solution. Union members sharing their jobs are the key to lowering personnel expenses.Δ

Habrá otro retén en San José

l pasado 12 de junio el Departamento Policial de San José hizo un retén en las esquinas de la Tully Rd y la avenida Galveston. Un total de 772 vehículos fueron inspec-

cionados y 7 conductores fueron procesados por estar bajo la influencia del alcohol.

Un total de 32 personas fueron citadas por no portar sus licencias de conducir. Cinco de estas fueron citadas por portar

licencias suspendidas. En total 20 vehículos fueron incautados en este retén. Se tiene programado un retén elpara este sábado 19 de junio.

Student Enrollment Open for Summer Music & Dance & Meals Program

T

he Mexican Heritage Corporation invites eligible children between the ages of 6 and 17 to join the summer nutrition, music and dance program at one of the three camp locations: San Jose State University School of Music and Dance, Mayfair Community Center and the Latino College Prep Academy on the campus of National Hispanic University.

Participating students will be served breakfast, lunch and two snacks each day. They will also receive lessons in music and dance from experienced teachers in many styles, attend concerts, meet professional musicians from all over the world, and learn to play instruments, sing and perform in ensembles and choirs. The meals and music camp classes and activities are absolutely free for all eligible participants.

The camps will run Mondays through Fridays, June 21 - August 13, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at each of the three locations.

To be eligible, participant families must be on CalWORKs, Food Stamps or fall under federal low-income guidelines. Qualifications require no experience in music or dance and all levels of experience are welcome.

New Emergency Phone Towers on VTA Platforms

The Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority (VTA) has installed new, highly visible emergency phone towers to provide VTA customers with access to emergency communications and VTA information via the Customer Call Center.

In addition to providing direct contact to 911 and VTA Customer Service, the towers provide a high profile, easy-to-use, ADA compliant structure that is easily identifiable during an emergency. The towers have a blue light at the top that is always on and goes into high power strobe mode when a call to 911 is placed.

The tower and phone are designed to hold up to the elements and are highly vandal resistant.

Customers may see a working payphone on a few platforms but VTA’s transition into the new emergency phone tower will provide the riding public a better means to emergency and customer services.

Brocoli ayudaría a prevenir cancer de mama ANN ARBOR, Michigan.— Un compuesto derivado del brócoli podría ayudar en la prevención o el tratamiento del cáncer de mama enfocándose en las células madre del cáncer, esto es el pequeño número de células que genera el crecimiento de un tumor, según un nuevo estudio de investigadores en el Centro Integral del Cáncer de la Universidad de Michigan.El estudio probó el sulforafano, un componente del brócoli y los retoños de brócoli en ratones y en cultivos de células.Los investigadores encontraron que el sulforafano ataca y mata a lascélulas madre del cáncer e impide que crezcan nuevos tumores.Las quimioterapias actuales no son eficaces contra las células madre de cáncer y por ello es que el cáncer recurre y se propaga. Los investigadores creen que la eliminación de las células madre del cáncer es la clave para controlar el cáncer.

En el estudio actual los investigadores tomaron ratones con cáncer de mama y les inyectaron diferentes concentraciones de sulforafano del extracto de brócoli. Los investigadores usaron luego varios métodos establecidos para evaluar el número de células madre de cáncer en los tumores. Estas

mediciones mostraron una disminución notable de la población de células madre de cáncer después del tratamiento con el sulforafano, y con poco efecto sobre las células normales.

La obesidad atrae a los abusadores ANN ARBOR, Michigan.— Los niños obesos tienen más probabilidades de ser víctimas de prepotencias y abusos, sean cuales sean su género, grupo étnico, situación socioeconómica, destrezas sociales o logros académicos.

Estas son las conclusiones del estudio "Weight status as a predictor of being bullied in third through sixth grades", (El peso corporal como indicador de la vulnerabilidad al abuso y prepotencia del tercer al sexto grado escolar).

La obesidad infantil y el abuso y la prepotencia infantiles son ambos problemas muy comunes de salud pública. La obesidad entre los niños en Estados Unidos ha aumentado a proporciones epidémicas y se calcula que el 17 por ciento de los niños y niñas de 6 a 11 años de edad eran obesos entre 2003 y 2006. Además este estudio es único en el sentido de que observó específicamente la gama de edades en la cual el abuso y la prepotencia alcanzan sus mayores proporciones, de los 6 a los 9 años.

Los autores llegaron a la conclusión de que el ser obeso, por sí mismo, aumenta la probabilidad de ser víctima de la prepotencia. Las intervenciones para encarar el abuso y la prepotencia en las escuelas se necesitan y mucho. Δ

Type O negative and type B negative blood supply drops to critically low levels

AKLAND, The supply of type O negative and type B negative blood at the American Red Cross has dropped to critically low levels.

Type O negative blood is always in high demand because it can be transfused to patients with any blood type, especially in emergency situations.

Type O negative and type B negative donors are needed now to help prevent the type O negative and type B negative blood supply from declining further.

“The American Red Cross is extending blood drive hours and reaching out to eligible blood donors, sponsors and community leaders to ask them to help recruit type O negative and type B negative blood donations to help make up for this shortfall,” says Sara O’Brien, spokesperson for the American Red Cross Blood Services – Northern California Region “While all blood types are needed during the summer months, we urge those eligible donors with O negative or B negative blood types to make and keep appointments to give blood in the upcoming days to help restore the inventory level,” O’Brien added.

“The Red Cross monitors the blood inventory on a daily basis and when we see a trend or shortage emerging, we communicate the need to our generous blood donors to help us make up the shortfall,” said O’Brien.

Excessive Patient Wait Times, Understaffing Spark Week of Caregiver Protests at HCA Hospitals Across California

AN JOSE– Caregivers at HCA, (the world’s largest private for-profit healthcare operator) lead a week of action at the corporation’s California hospitals to protest understaffing and excessive patient wait times.

Picket lines went up at the first of five hospitals on Monday, June 14.

Caregivers included certified nurse assistants, ER techni-

cians and respiratory care practitioners. All of which are members of Service Employees International Union-United Healthcare Workers West (SEIU-UHW), the state’s largest union of healthcare workers. As frontline staff, the caregivers are pushing HCA to heed their proposals to reduce the harm to patient care caused by chronic understaffing.

“We’re committed to mak-

ing sure our patients come first and we need HCA to invest in quality care. Patients shouldn’t have to wait for care because we don’t have enough staff,” said Michelle Parker, a licensed vocational nurse at HCA’s Riverside Community Hospital.

During the week of action, caregivers revealed survey results that demanded dramatic improvements in patient safety and hospital cleanliness.

A shortage of type O negative and type B negative blood often occurs during the summer months when fewer donors are giving because of summer vacations and schools approaching summer break are hosting fewer drives.

Every two seconds, someone in the United States needs blood. The Red Cross Northern California Blood Services Region provides lifesaving blood to 30 hospitals and must have 300 people give blood each weekday to meet hospital demand. Accident victims as well as patients with cancer, sickle cell disease, blood disorders and other illnesses receive lifesaving transfusions every day. There is no substitute for blood and volunteer donors are the only source.

Individuals who are 17 years of age (16 with parental permission in some states), meet weight and height requirements (110 pounds or more, depending on their height) and are in generally good health may be eligible to give blood. menudo nos enteramos de noticias horrorosas sobre niños que son victimizados por otros niños en la escuela, el vecindario, y en la Internet. Existen programas escolares intentando mejorar el clima en los planteles educativos, y hay padres de familia supervisando las redes sociales, mas no hablamos lo suficiente acerca de los niños que acosan, y sobre lo que podemos hacer para prevenir que nuestros hijos se conviertan en unos de ellos.

He aquí unas consideraciones a tomar en cuenta: Comprenda los estilos de comportamiento individuales de sus hijos y tenga expectativas realistas basadas en el temperamento de cada cual. * Cuando los niños son sensitivos, ayúdeles a navegar las aguas de la amistad y la vida escolar. * A los niños activos e impulsivos les encanta ser el centro de atención. Proporcióneles oportunidades de expresar sus energías.

Pase tiempo con sus hijos y sus amistades. * Conozca las amistades de sus hijos y preste atención a los

valores que demuestran. ¿Se siente su hija atraída a los niños "problemáticos"? * Trate de entender por qué sus hijos son amigos de los niños que son crueles con otros.

Establezca límites y consecuencias para la conducta inapropiada. * No excuse el mal comportamiento de sus hijos. Implemente consecuencias razonables, y demuéstreles que espera que la próxima vez se porten mejor. * Preste atención a las conductas positivas. * Busque la manera de disciplinar sin castigos severos.

Norma Rodriguez Named 2010 National Distinguished Principal

AN JOSE, CA – On June 4, 2010, Norma Rodriguez, Dorsa Elementary School Principal, was surprised by a cafeteria full of students, parents, teachers, colleagues, family members and friends. All had been invited to share in the joy of a very special announcement. Mr. Mike Bossi, Elementary Executive with the Association of California School Administrators and ACSA’s Director of Leadership Coaching, joined Alum Rock Superintendent José L. Manzo to unveil a very special and well-deserved recognition. On behalf of the National Association for Elementary School Principals (NAESP), Mr. Bossi and Superintendent Manzo recognized Norma Rodriguez as 2010 National Distinguished Elementary

School Principal (NDP) representing California. Through this award, Norma joins a prestigious cadre of exemplary site administrators from throughout the country. Dorsa’s student body includes 95% Latinos, 100% of whom qualify for the school lunch program; 70% of Dorsa’s students are English learners and the school annually experiences a 40% student mobility rate. Since Norma joined Dorsa in 2004, the school has gained 174 API points and there has been a jump in the proficient/advanced rate to 41% in language arts and a jump to 50% proficient/advanced rate in Mathematics. Dorsa’s current API is 730.

L

a magia, el color, la atracción, la imaginación, los efectos especiales se innovan día a día en el centro de atraccciones de Disney. Para este verano miles y miles de visitantes podrán apreciar los fuegos artificiales combinados en fuentes de agua e increíbles animaciones a través del agua.

“World of Color” es una exhibición de fuentes de agua que sirven de pantalla para presentar las imágenes de los personajes de Disney. En una exhibición de 25 minutos los visitantes podrán apreciar el juego de luces, la magia que sale debajo del agua y el impecable sonido sincronizado con las fuentes y los personajes de Disney.

El reciente lanzamiento en el parque Disney California Adventure cuenta con ese espíritu vanguardista que cada año estrena Disney. "'World of Color' es un testamento a la creatividad, pasión, innovación y talento de las personas en toda nuestra organización", dijo Iger. "La combinación de agua, luz, fuego y música hace de 'World of Color' un evento verdaderamente mágico que muestra a los queridos personajes de Disney de una forma completamente nueva", dijo Robert A. Iger, presidente y jefe ejecutivo de The Walt Disney Company.

Por su parte Thomas O. Staggs, presidente de Walt Disney Parks & Resorts dijo que “World of Color “ transforma el panorama del Disneyland Resort y marca un hito en la expansión de Disney California Adventure. Es un espectáculo sensacional que es distintivamente Disney, y muy diferente a cualquier atracción que hayamos creado en el pasado”.

Lo cierto es que es cada año el parque de atracciones trae cambios y en esta oportunidad la tecnología se suma en esta presentación que sorprenderá a más de uno.

Esta zona de casi un acre de extension es propicia para gigantescas proyecciones, efectos rayos laser, niebla y hasta el lenguas de fuego que salen desde el lago.

Para hacer realidad esta presentación se trabajó por 5 años y se utilizaron 30 proyectores de alta definición, 14 de ellos bajo el agua. Se contó con 1,200 poderosas fuentes que se pueden programar con alturas de 30 a 200 pies. Cada fuente tiene múltiples puntos de control para dirigir la luz, intensidad del color, el ángulo y altura del agua.

SANTA CLARA COUNTY, CALIF – Joined by cities and counties from around the nation, the County of Santa Clara, California filed an amicus curiae brief today in Arizona urging a federal district court to block enforcement of the State of Arizona’s new anti-immigrant law. The brief was filed in Friendly House et al. v. Whiting et al., a case brought by labor, business, domestic violence, human services, social justice, and religious organizations, as well as a class of individuals who will be subject to harassment or arrest under the law, seeking to have the law invalidated. Santa Clara County and several other local governments joining its brief—the counties of Monterey and Los Angeles and the cities of Baltimore, Berkeley, Los Angeles, Minneapolis, New Haven, Palo Alto, Portland (OR), Saint Paul, San Francisco, San Jose, and Seattle—filed the brief in support the plaintiffs’ request for an injunction that would prevent the law from taking effect while the

court considers its constitutionality.

The local governments filing the brief provide essential services to local residents, including maintaining safe communities through the funding, operation, and oversight of local law enforcement agencies.

They argue that Arizona’s law “imposes vague and unworkable requirements” on local law enforcement officers. As a structural matter, they say, Arizona’s law essentially requires officers to engage in racial profiling and other unconstitutional conduct, leading to serious repercussions for law enforcement relationships with people of color and long-term negative effects on the ability of local governments to protect their residents’ safety.

The lawsuit names as defendants the Arizona County Attorneys and Sheriffs who are required to enforce SB 1070 if it is permitted to take effect on July 29, 2010. The State of Arizona has intervened to defend the law. Δ

Joan Sebastián llora la muerte de su hijo

os Angeles, (Notimex).- El hijo del cantautor mexicano fue asesinado este fin de semana en un bar de Cuernavaca, Morelos, y con ello la tragedia volvió a impactarlo luego de que su otro hijo, Trigo, falleció en 2006 en condiciones similares.

Trigo fue asesinado por un desconocido al término de un concierto de su padre en Texas y después de enfrascarse en una discusión aparentemente por el acceso al sitio.

Juan Sebastián Figueroa, de 32 años, fue asesinado a tiros en la entrada de un bar, después de involucrarse en una aparente disputa con personal del sitio, señalaron las primeras versiones.

Aunque la familia no ha respondido a llamados telefónicos, fuentes cercanas a ésta han confirmado que el sepelio se efectuará este martes en el cementerio Pacific View Memorial Park.

En el cementerio localizado en el centro Este de Los Ángeles se reporta una gran presencia de medios de comunicación locales a fin de obtener primeras impresiones.

he city of San Jose has been selected by USA Gymnastics and the U.S. Olympic Committee to host the 2012 U.S. Olympic Team trials for men and women’s artistic gymnastics. The weeklong event will turn S an Jose into a primary sports focus and is important to the economic development of the city.

“Many of the world’s top companies will be looking at San as a possible investment opportunity because of this event,” said San Jose Mayor, Chuck Reed.

“The event will also get kids excited about gymnastics and other sports and activities.”

The effort to get the Gymnastics Olympic trials to San Jose was headed by the San Sports Authority and HP Pavilion, including a commitments from the C ity of San Jose, San Jose Hotels, Inc., and the S an Jose Convention and Visitor’s Bureau.

“San Jose is known for its support of USA gymnastics throughout the years,” said Patricia Ernstrom, executive director of the S an Jose Sports Authority.

“It is fitting that the city host the 2012 Olympic Gymnastics trials.”

Recently, San Jose hosted the 2007Visa Champi-

onships, the 2008 P acific Rim Gymnastics Championships, the 2009 U.S. Trampoline and Tumbling Junior Olympic Championships and the 2004 U.S. Olympic Team Trials for rhythmic gymnastics and trampoline.

In addition, the U .S. Olympic Committ ee processed the 2008 U.S. Olympic Team in San Jose before heading to Beijing.

Two-time Olympic medalist in gymnastics (1996 team gold medal, and silver medalist in the uneven bars) and San Jose native Amy Chow said she was very excited to see USA Gymnastics hold their trials in San Jose.

“When I was trying to make it on the Olympic team, I would have to travel to different parts of the country to do so,” Chow said. “The Olympic trials is were dreams come true and San Jose has shown a lot support f or Americ an gymnasts throughout the years.”

The event will be conducted at HP Pavilion in San Jose, June 28 – July 1. The USA Gymnastics National Congress and Trade Show will be staged a t the San Jose McEnery Convention Center.

n Thursday, June 10, Bay Area soccer fans had the chance to meet San Jose Earthquakes midfielder Arturo Alvarez at the Verizon Wireless store in San Francisco to help celebrate the kick off of the 2010 FIFA World Cup soccer tournament.

“I’m really happy to be here to start off the World Cup and I know Verizon is affiliated with them in regards to streaming the actual live game to customers through the v-cast and I think it’s really cool for all the soccer fans out there,” said Arturo Alvarez, Earthquakes’ midfielder.

The soccer fans had the opportunity to get an autographed postcard and a photo with the midfielder. They also learned how to stream Univision’s live broadcast of the soccer matches from South Africa, exclusively on VCAST from Verizon.

“I want the US to do well,” said Alvarez.

“But I think Argentina might be one of the strong teams to go all the way.”

No matter the home country, customers will be able to see their favorite teams compete in the world’s most important soccer tournament featuring players from 32 nations, the culmination of qualifying matches among 208 countries.

“I love this game, I think I’m pretty lucky and blessed that I get to do this for a job,” said Alvarez. “It’s amazing to be playing for your country and knowing that you have a chance to play in a World Cup, the biggest sporting event

in the world. Hopefully 2014 we (El Salvador) will qualify.”

San Jose hasn’t always been a place to call home for Alvarez. He has played for FC Dallas and for El Salvador, learning things on and off the fields since he began his career fresh out of high school.

“Something that I always tell the kids in high school is to chase their dream and keep working hard and listen to your parents and family because they want the best for you,” stated Alvarez. “Dreams do come true, I’m living mine and I’m really happy.”

n las esquinas de San Fernando y Market en la ciudad de San José los restaurantes estaban repletos de comensales presenciando el encuentro entre México y Francia. El partido dominado en su mayoría por México terminó en un 2 a 0.

Por primera vez la Selección Mexicana de fútbol derrotó a la de Francia, por 2-0, y dio un paso importante en su clasificación a octavos de final de la Copa del Mundo Francia 2010.

Javier Hernández, al minutio 63, y Cuauhtémoc Blanco, de penal al 79, marcaron los goles del triunfo en la cancha del estadio Peter Mokaba que registró una excelente en entrada de aficionados mexicanos.

El Tricolor tiene ahora cuatro puntos, mismos que posee Uruguay, mientras que Francia y Sudáfrica se quedaron con una unidad en el Grupo A. El siguiente y último encuentro es el próximo 22 ante los "Charrúas" y hay una expectativa por este gran encuentro.Δ
