Comunidad se puso de pie

pesar de tiempos difíciles la campaña de “Toys for Tots” de los Marines ha tenido un resultado bueno. Los recolección de juguetes y donativos fue productiva este año 2010. El pasado 11 diciembre el Servicio de Transporte Público (VTA) puso a su disposición unidades móviles para colectar los donativos. Como es tradicional dos semanas antes de navidad, las unidades ofrecen su servicio para ser utilizados como medio de transporte hacia los almacénes. “Hemos tenido bastante éxito. Nos ha sorprendido gratamente la respuesta de la comunidad. Se logró completar dos autobuses llenos de regalos” explicó a EO el Sargento Timoteo Santibañez. n estos tiempos tan díficiles de desempleo, la situación de las familias de menos recursos ha sido golpeada fuertemente. Las organizaciones no lucra-

tivas como “Sacred Heart Community Services” se han visto afectadas también por la escasez de donativos. Recientemente la organización estaba enfrentando un gran dilema. Ellos estaban tratando de suplir las necesidades de 6,000 personas que se había inscrito para recibir alimentos y regalos en estas fiestas navideñas. Como los milagros existen, la agencia bancaria “Comerica Bank” no dudó en donar 14 mil dólares a esta noble causa. La entrega tuvo lugar el pasado 10 de diciembre. Mike Fulton Presidente de Comerica Bank entregó a Poncho Guevara, Director Ejecutivo de Sacred Heart Community Services esta cantidad que por cierto cae en el momento de mayor necesidad. “Cuando me enteré que miles de familias dependían de Sacred Heart, decidí que debíamos ayudarlos. Comerica Bank es una agencia bancaria que ha hecho negocios en San José por 20 años, entonces me pregunté por qué no ayudar a la organización que generosamente ayuda a quienes menos tienen”, dijo Fulton a EO. Por su parte el Director Ejecutivo de “Sacred Heart” agradeció enormemente este donativo. "Esto no podría haber llegado en este mejor momento", dijo Guevara. "Estamos pensando en repartir 3,000 cajas de Navidad con alimentos y 15,000 juguetes en las próximas semanas. Nunca hemos visto tanta necesidad, y aquí están llegando nuevas familias. Lamentablemente, todavía hay un gran número de desempleados, y no pueden darse el lujo de poner comida en sus mesas, y mucho menos pagar los gastos extras, como una cena de pavo y juguetes debajo de un árbol de Navidad. La gene rosidad de Comerica Bank es muy apreciada en esta Navidad. Según se nos informa que a diario hay un promedio de mil personas esperando por comida en este centro. Esta gente está esperanzada en los donativos de esta agencia, tales como alimentos, ropa así como ayuda en vivienda y empleos.Δ

lthough its welcome news that the economy is slowly on the mend, many of our family members and friends are still struggling to survive day to day. If you or someone you know is among those who have been hit hardest by the recession, or even those who have been creatively balancing your budget for the past few years, relief may still be a ways off. Fortunately, the county, in partnership with several community based agencies, has put together a network of resources that may be helpful during these trying times. Do you know anyone in need of housing? The recent cold snap reminds us of the need to keep a roof over our heads. If you know anyone who is looking for affordable housing, you can use a FREE online tool to help them search for it. This tool is located at www.scchousingsearch.com. This tool is a collaboration of a number of local entities, government and nonprofits. It lets you search by the type of housing you are looking for, price of housing you can afford, and special housing needs that must be met. It is a great resource for those looking for affordable housing in Santa Clara County. Do you know anyone in need of food? There are a number of agencies that can help provide food services. If you know someone who needs help paying for groceries, you can help them find out more information on California’s Food Stamp program. This program has a local application service through the Santa Clara County Social Services Department and can be reached through the following link http://bit.ly/sccfoodstamp. You could also help them reach out to Second Harvest Food Bank. This organization provides FREE food for qualified individuals and families. If you are, or know of, a senior looking for food assistance options, there are a two different programs run through Santa Clara County’s Department of Aging and Adult Services. These include Meals on Wheels, where food can be delivered directly to homes of seniors and the disabled as well as a number of congregate (community) meal sites that serve low-cost meals to seniors in a social and fun atmosphere. A High Speed Rail Service Alternative Concept By Hilbert Morales

very good objective is being missed altogether by the current CA High Speed Rail Authority (CAHSRA). Actually, several current needs of the CA economy and its peoples would be addressed: creation of jobs, enhancement of the development of areas now ‘underdeveloped’ and the encouragement of people to reside in the Central Valley. The long term objective would be the connection of California’s high speed rail system to the one being developed to the north. The final outcome would be a high speed rail service from San Diego all the way north to Seattle, Washington. Is this not a reasonable project which qualifies for federal funding? It would be similar to the establishment of the national U.S. Highway system under the Eisenhower Administration after World War II. Why not have the CAHSRA have as its first objective the establishment of high speed rail service from San Diego up the Central Valley all the way north to Sacramento and beyond to Red Bluff, Redding, Chico and Cresent City? Then the CAHSRA trains will go from nowhere to somewhere. Know that if built along this route “they will come”…businesses, contractors, jobs, people and government agencies. The economic development of Northern CA would become enhanced. The current extension from San Jose to San Francisco can be deferred to a later date. The resources to be used there would have a higher return on investment when applied to areas having lower right of way costs. An upgrade of the current CalTrans commuter services from San Jose to San Francisco is possible at much lower costs and without the disruption of the Mid peninsula urban area which contains Silicon Valley whose ecosystem would not be impacted for the present time. If this addition to the current mission of the CAHSRA requires going back to the voters, the possibility of approval is very high when presented as the needed economic development of the entire state. Demographic growth projects require the development now of future living areas for those additional 20 million Californians projected to reside here. Why not prepare the lower population density areas for them? The high speed railway service could go north from Sacramento, to Chico, Redding, and all the way to Crescent City at the northern

CA border. Its construction would be analogous to the intercontinental railroad which connected America’s Midwest with its western coast during the Abraham Lincoln administration. In this case CA would install a high speed rail service from San Diego in the South to Crescent City in the north. The outcome would encourage settlement and development of Northern CA where there is low cost land, more potable water, and Shasta’s Dam electric generation capability would be put to full use. Let’s establish the goal of encouraging CA’s population growth to settle in Northern CA. High speed rail service could be used to encourage development of ‘empty’ Northern CA rather than continual growth of the existing megapolis at San Diego, Los Angeles and the San Francisco Bay Area. Additional beneficial outcomes are that the peripheral canal around the Sacramento Delta may not have to be built; The American and Californian Aqueducts would not have to be enlarged. Because of high speed rail service which encourages development of Northern CA, a higher resident population there would mean that certain services could be provided at lower and reasonable costs. The long term objective would be to connect San Diego with Seattle to the north with high speed rail services. This is a planning and development concept that may be evaluated now prior to the disruptive proposals required for the San Jose to San Francisco high speed rail service. Think of the many legal challenges to eminent domaine proceedings for site acquisitions, years of disruptive construction and excavation, etc. All that can be done in Northern CA with a minimum level of disruptions and cost of right of ways Let’s get the biggest return on investment in Northern California. Let’s redefine the purpose of CA High Speed Rail Service to connect the southern limit with its northern limits in the interest of facilitating future development of California and enabling the future growth in population and economic capability. This alternative high speed rail service concept serves the national interest. It is worthy of being evaluated and implemented before establishing high speed rail service between San Jose and San Francisco.Δ

The generous TWFK grant gave Somos Mayfair the opportunity to fulfill the holiday wishes of many children, while providing them with a gift that promotes physical activity and healthy lifestyles, furthering their work of fostering family health and wellness. “ I am constantly in awe of people’s generous spirits! Almost 200 children in Mayfair received gifts of new bikes that I’m sure they will remember forever. No More Plastic Bags

AN JOSE, CA –– San Jose – the largest city in the Bay Area and the third largest city in California, passed landmark legislation to ban plastic bags that will reduce the amount of plastic pollution that is clogging our creeks and San Francisco Bay. As the policy with the most coverage proposed anywhere in California, this ordinance would ban plastic bags and require a small charge on recycled-content paper bags at most retailers. The ban that passed with a 10-1 vote, will take effect in 2012 and also requires retailers to charge 10 cents for paper bags starting January 2012 and increase that to 25 cents in 2013. Bay Area residents use an estimated 3.8 billion plastic bags per year and discard over one hundred plastic bags per second. The average use time of a plastic bag is only 12 minutes. Plastic bags are a major component of urban litter. Even when placed in trash cans, these lightweight bags are often picked up by wind and blown into the gutters – where they flow into creeks and storm drains and then into the Bay and the ocean. Plastic bags are among the most harmful, ubiquitous and preventable types of pollution. San Jose waterways threatened by trash and plastic pollution In 2007, the San Francisco Regional Water Quality Control Board declared three waterways in San Jose – Guadalupe River, Coyote Creek and Silver Creek – so polluted with trash that they violate the federal Clean Water Act. As part of Coastal Cleanup Day, volunteers reported removing over 1,000 plastic bags from Coyote Creek in 2008. Just this past summer, per new regulations outlined in the Water Board’s municipal stormwater permit, the City of San Jose identified 43 “trash hot spots” that the City will now be required to clean up. The City anticipates it will cost them $4 million over five years to comply with stricter trash discharge requirements in the new regulations. Further, both Coyote Creek and Guadalupe River repeatedly make Save The Bay’s annual list of Bay Trash Hot Spots. Plastic trash solutions Tough policies and regulations are needed to reduce plastic trash flowing to the Bay and ocean. Smartly crafted ban or charge policies, such as the one proposed in San Jose, are proven ways to create a mass switch to reusable bags to clean up our communities and San Francisco Bay, and save cities money. Washington D.C.’s five cent charge on bags has resulted in an estimated 80 percent decrease in plastic and paper bag distribution, and 66 percent fewer plastic bags found in the Anacostia River. San Jose city staff estimates that it costs the City at least $3 million annually to collect plastic bags that litter creeks and clog storm drains. The City’s recycling contractors also support this policy, as plastic bags jam machinery, causing work flow stoppages and threatening worker safety.

Estos libros son distribuidos por la organización sin fines de lucro “Hesperian Foundation” cuya misión es llevarlos a comunidades aisladas. Este material es fácil de leer y está dirigido a personas que por primera vez se conectan con libros cuyas ilustraciones les permite entender temas tan complejos como el cuidado del asma o qué hacer en caso una persona se lastima. David Werner fundó Hesperian Foundation. Entre él y otras personas escribieron e ilustraron uno de los primeros libros basado en su trabajo con la salud y programas de rehabilitación en zonas rurales de México. Aunque ya no está en la fundación,su trabajo inspiró para que se continuara con esta tarea de educar fácilmente a través de estos libros donde surgieron otros temas también de salud. Aunque estos libros son destinados a luga-

res remotos del mundo, no podemos pasar por alto que aquí, en el Valle del Silicio hayan personas que necesiten de esta material informativo. “El material es fácil de leer y entender. Está dirigido para todos los latinos que necesiten este tipo de información, especialmente las personas que no han tenido acceso a una educación superior. El libro es valioso porque es material preventivo de salud”, explicó Karla Reyes. A nivel local estos libros se distribuyen a través de la Libreria La Rosa localizado en el centro comercial “La Tropicana” del este de San José. El material está completamente en español, educa informa y explica a través de gráficos el cuidado dental entre otras cosas. Reyes que se ha unido a este proyecto quiere que estos libros sean distribuidos a muchas personas. “Queremos que la gente compre libros, deseamos que las personas tengan acceso a esta información de la misma manera que otros la tienen”. Keep Kids Learning During Winter Break

If you're a teacher, make it a holiday assignment. That's right. Not just play another video game -- design and develop one. Developing video games is a great way to keep your kids learning over the holidays and when indoors during the cold winter months -in a way that is fun and appealing to them. Video game design has been proven to help advance kids' critical science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) skills, and it also teaches them invaluable 21st-century skills like problem solving and critical thinking. And, it's a great way to spend quality time with your kids to help them learn. So now that you're bought into the idea, how do you get started? Boys & Girls Clubs of America (BGCA) offers two options: * Find your local Boys & Girls Clubs.

Many of the 4,000 Clubs across the country offer the Club Tech program, which promotes technology literacy and access. Si su hijo todavía no tiene una idea clara de cómo va a lograr sus metas, dedique esa hora a ofrecerle algunas sugerencias de dónde puede encontrar información al respecto que lo puede ayudar. La página de ACT para estudiantes es un buen punto de partida. Dedique más tiempo para familiarizarse con los estándares de las destrezas que su hijo necesita dominar en inglés, matemáticas, ciencias, lectura y redacción, así como para entender la forma en que estas destrezas se relacionan con lograr el éxito en el examen ACT de admisión a la universidad. Los estándares de apresto para la universidad (College Readiness Standards) representan la relación directa entre lo que los estudiantes han aprendido y lo que están preparados para aprender. Por su parte, las actividades sugeridas representan la relación entre los estándares (o normas)

Cuando haga su listado de regalos navideños, ¿por qué no regalar a sus hijos “más y mejores oportunidades” en la vida? Ya que las oportunidades llegan como resultado de la preparación adecuada, mientras mejor preparados estén sus hijos para las próximas etapas de la vida, más oportunidades tendrá. Una manera en la que usted puede asegurar que sus hijos estén debidamente preparados para aprovechar las oportunidades que le esperan en la vida, es involucrándose más en los asuntos de la educación de su hijo. Dedicar más de su tiempo para los asuntos de la escuela es un regalo que tendrá resultados a corto y a largo plazos. Aquí ofrecemos algunas ideas para que usted regale a su hijo más de las oportunidades que necesita para salir adelante en su vida. Coordine por lo menos una visita más por semestre a la escuela de su hija, una reunión más con sus maestros, y haga todo lo posible por conocer y reunirse con el consejero escolar. Probablemente pueda hacer todo en un mismo día si lo planifica bien. Cuando visite la escuela, pregunte a los maestros y consejeros escolares si su hija o hijo está tomando los cursos necesarios para prepararse para la universidad. Pregunte al maestro si su adolescente está preparado para tomar los cursos rigurosos necesarios para estudiar en la universidad. Si no lo está, pregunte a la maestra qué puede hacer

usted, como padre, para ayudarlo a prepararse para tomar dichos cursos. Este tipo de cursos son los que su adolescente necesita para prepararse para estudiar en la universidad. Dígale a su hijo que los cursos fáciles, aunque piense que ayudan a subir el promedio de calificaciones, no necesariamente lo ayudan a encaminarse para la universidad, y tampoco lo ayudarán a lograr sus metas. Es importante que su hijo o hija sepa que los cursos correctivos no compensan lo que no ha aprendido en la escuela y que no hay garantía de que éstos lo ayuden a ser admitido en la universidad. Motive a su hija a participar de las actividades que auspicia la escuela, ya sea deportes, las artes, e incluso competencias académicas. Así como es de importante que su hijo esté activo en la escuela, también lo es que usted participe y esté activo en los asuntos académicos. Este semestre, planifique participar de por lo menos una o más actividades de la escuela, incluso reuniones de padres y maestros. A los hijos les encanta ver a los padres participar; el suyo le agradecerá que usted haya dedicado tiempo para sus cosas. Si su hijo cursa la escuela media (entre los grados 6 y 9, depende de la escuela que asista), éste es el mejor momento para que usted comience a conversar con sus maestros (en especial la de inglés, ciencia y matemática) acerca de su progreso en estas importantes destrezas académicas. Pregunte a los maestros los pasos que su hijo debe tomar para que cuando se gradúe de secundaria, esté encaminado para proseguir estudios universitarios y para una profesión que le abra las puertas de la oportunidad. a Oficina del Sheriff del Condado de Santa Clara en colaboración con el Departamento Correccional hizo entrega de 400 juguetes elaborados por los presos de Elmwood al programa de los Marinos llamado “Toys for Tots”. Por décimo año consecutivo, personas que están cumpliendo condena por delitos menores decidieron participar en un programa que les permitía trabajar, aprender y obtener un certificado por su participación. “Todos los años en el mes de julio el programa se pone en marcha para entregar estos juguetes. Alrededor de 10 a 15 presos que están cumpliendo una corta condena pasan por este programa. Esto es voluntario y ellos deciden participar y al final de 60 días reciben su certificado de carpintería”, dijo el Capitán Troy Beliveau. “Prefiero estar ocupado. He pasado seis horas participando en este programa y en febrero estoy saliendo de aquí”, dijo Robert. Me he sentido muy útil al contribuir en nuestra comunidad. También me llamó la atención las razones de este programa. Hay personas que lo necesitan y me siento contento de haber hecho algo”, agregó otro interno de nombre Bob. El Jefe del Correccional de Elmwood dijo que en los últimos 9 años, los presos han participado en clases de carpintería, también han construido y elaborado más de 3,000 juguetes

para el programa “Toys for Tots”. Por su parte el Sargento Juan Montes de Oca agradeció a los presos del Correccional Elmwood en Milpitas. “Estos juguetes serán distribuidos a doscientas diferentes organizaciones que se encargarán de repartir juguetes a todos los residentes del Condado de Santa Clara. Nosotros los recogemos, los transportamos y nos encargaremos de hacer llegar todo este lote de juguetes a esos lugares”. “Me siento orgulloso de retribuir de alguna manera a mi comunidad. Me siento contento ayudando a otros y por su puesto, no quiero estar de regreso en este lugar. Uno aprende muchas cosas positivas aquí. Mientras pasé mis horas en este lugar, tuve tiempo de pensar y reaccionar en muchos aspectos de mi vida”, expresó el interno Randy. “Los presos tienen la oportunidad de desa rrollar sus habilidades y destrezas en el campo de la carpintería. Muchos de ellos cuando salen de prisión van directamente a buscar trabajos relacionados a carpintería y construcción. Para algunos, esto es algo nuevo y saliendo de prisión ya tienen en mente trabajar y arreglar o refaccionar sus casas”, dijo John Del Conte, quien tiene 18 años trabajando en la correccional y que ha sido instructor en este programa. En este programa han participado un total de 27 reclusos. Los participantes son personas de bajo riesgo, que están presos por delitos menores y que debido a explorar el lado positivo tienen la oportunidad de salir de la cárcel. Δ

ennis Nahat continua con éxito presentando desde 1,986 la obra “The Nutcracker” (“Los Cascanueces” en español) en la ciudad de San José. Hasta el 26 de diciembre las familias tienen la oportunidad de presenciar este espectáculo preparado por el Ballet de San José. En el primer acto, la presencia de los pequeños en esta obra musical le dio mucha vida. Los pequeños que representaron a los ratones encantaron a todos los espectadores. El cierre del primer acto sobre la nieve fue impresionante y embelleció a lo largo y ancho los escenarios del “San Jose Center for the Performing Arts”. Cuentan los productores que se usaron cuatro máquinas de humo y un total de

400 libras de hielo seco para lograr el efecto de la tormenta maravillosa de nieve, esto al final del primer acto. Los escenarios colgantes fueron muy creativos y muy visuales. Nahat como coreógrafo aprovechó al máximo un escenario no muy grande pero que le dio la oportunidad de cambiarlo 74 veces durante las dos horas y media de presentación. Otra de las escena ques mostró la habilidad y agilidad de los danzantes fue el viaje a Rusia. “El Kremlin”, como escenario de fondo ilustró el contexto, y los bailarines dieron vida a esta parte de la presentación. What type of holiday gifter are you? (ARA) - For millions of Americans, Thanksgiving signals the start of holiday shopping madness. For others, it's a year-long journey, with presents carefully and thoughtfully selected along the way. Mirac-

ulously, others manage to get it all done in just one day. Just what type of holiday gifter are you and what exactly does it say about your personality? According to a new na-

tional survey of American women on the psychology of gifting by Kelton Research, commissioned by eBay, the majority of women identify with one of four gifter profiles: emotional gifter, convenience

gifter, practical gifter and lastminute gifter. And, regardless of the gifter profile - and despite popular belief - 60 percent of women say holiday shopping brings more joy than stress. "That number surprised me, especially since so many women do the lion's share of holiday shopping," says Lisa Cavanaugh, USC professor and expert in consumer psychology. "More than 80 percent of married women said that they were responsible for 75 to 100 percent of their household's holiday shopping - that is a lot of shopping. The prevalence of happy holiday shoppers may be due, at least in part, to the increased number of possible gift options and ease of shopping online." Based on the profiles identified, Cavanaugh offers insights on how to embrace your inner gifter by finding the best shopping resources and how to keep stress levels in check during the holiday shopping season. The emotional gifter: This profile resonates with more women than any other profile. Forty-two percent of women consider themselves emotional gifters. They put a tremendous amount of effort into the gifting experience, buying unique, thoughtful gifts for each person on their list to show they really understand that person. They plan ahead, take time to wrap their own presents and handwrite a card to accompany each gift. "The emotional gifter loves to give. A lot of time and energy goes into choosing one-ofa-kind gifts for everyone on your list. If this is you, sites like eBay can be particularly helpful in finding something unique for friends and family," says Cavanaugh. In fact, eBay has more than 200 million listings, which makes it easy to find that just-right gift. The convenience gifter: Sixteen percent of women identified with this one-stop shopper profile. These women

approach holiday shopping with maximum efficiency, getting shopping done early and usually all at once. This type of gifter prefers to find one great item and buy it for more than one person on the list. "Convenience gifters rarely take joy in the shopping process," says Cavanaugh. If you're a convenience gifter, Cavanaugh says more shopping creates more stress. It may be helpful to identify a single store or website that allows you to complete your shopping efficiently so you can move on to holiday activities that bring you more joy. The practical gifter: Do you often feel that no one knows better what they want than themselves? Like 21 percent of women, this profile tends to give gift cards or cash as presents and allow the gift recipient to make the decision of what to buy. "Despite their popularity, each year a large percentage of gift cards are not redeemed," says Cavanaugh. "To avoid this, consider giving gift cards

from a mall so the recipient can use it at any store of their choosing, or purchase a gift card from a favorite shop or website you know they frequent." The last-minute gifter: Thirteen percent typically find themselves buying gifts quite close to the holidays, even the day before. These gifters don't plan ahead and often rush, hoping to find things family and friends will like. According to Cavanaugh, last minute gifters should do their best to protect themselves against overspending in a last minute shopping panic. To reduce stress, know your budget and keep it simple by going where family and friends commonly like to shop. No matter what type of gifter you are, enjoy the holiday season. Children at Risk with Secondhand Smoke

ANTA CLARA COUNTY, CALIF.—A study released yesterday shows that secondhand smoke exposure for children living in multi-unit housing has serious health consequences. The study illustrates that even with very low levels of secondhand smoke exposure children are at a much greater risk for a variety of illnesses ranging from asthma to cognitive impairments to sudden infant death syndrome. The risk of secondhand smoke to children exists even if no one smokes in their particular unit. “Kids who are exposed to cigarette smoke are inhaling pollution directly into their lungs. This can cause illnesses and conditions like asthma. These children often miss school and aren’t always able to participate in normal activities,” stated Steve Harris, Chairman, Department of Pediatrics, Santa Clara Valley Medical Center and President, California Chapter 1 of the American Academy of Pediatrics. “Secondhand smoke exposure is completely preventable and we should do everything we can to stop this from happening to kids.” The “Tobacco Smoke Exposure in Children Who Live in Multiunit Housing” study found that among children who live in households where no one smokes inside, those who live in apartments have a 45 percent increase in cotinine levels (a common marker of tobacco smoke exposure) compared with children who live in detached homes. This increase could be caused by smoke seeping

through walls or shared ventilation systems. “This is the first study to take a look at the exposure to secondhand smoke in multiunit housing, and it shows there is no safe level of secondhand smoke exposure for children,” commented Dr. Marty Fenstersheib, Health Officer for Santa Clara County. “This information should motivate all of us to do more to stop exposure to secondhand smoke, especially when children are affected.” The study was conducted by the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) Julius B. Richmond Center, the University of Rochester Medical Center and Mass General Hospital for Children. It is the first study to show significant evidence of increased tobacco smoke exposure in the blood of children who live in multi-unit housing. Santa Clara County Public Health Department’s Chronic Disease & Injury Prevention Division, in partnership with local public and private agencies, has focused local efforts on reducing exposure to secondhand smoke. Recently, the County of Santa Clara Board of Supervisors adopted comprehensive tobacco prevention policies impacting the unincorporated areas of the county, including a MultiUnit Residences Ordinance.

“The residents of this county deserve strong policies to safeguard their health,” said President Ken Yeager, County of Santa Clara Board of Supervisors, who brought the ordinance to the Board. “These ordinances make Santa Clara County a national leader in blocking tobacco sales to minors and protecting residents from secondhand smoke.” The Multi-Unit Residences Ordinance bans smoking in common areas of all multiunit residences, and in all units of apartments, condominiums, and townhouses. The ordinance allows for designated smoking areas for multi-unit residences. These areas must not be enclosed and at least 30 feet away from doors, windows and other openings. The other comprehensive tobacco prevention policies adopted by the Board of Supervisors were a Smoking Pollution Control Ordinance and a Tobacco Retailer Permit Ordinance. The passage of all three ordinances lays a foundation to inspire cities within Santa Clara County to adopt similar comprehensive tobacco control policies. In addition to the ordinances, the Santa Clara County Public Health Department is using grant funds to increase stop smoking resources, raise awareness about secondhand smoke and provide information to young people about not smoking. These combined tobacco prevention activities serve to protect the health of all residents of Santa Clara County.
