Southern Entrance

We would like to remind parents and carers that the gate at the southern entrance will be locked at 08:23 each morning. Students arriving after this time should enter via the main entrance in Cricklefield Place.

Safeguarding

The welfare and safety of our students is our priority. We do everything possible to ensure our students’ safety, both within the school community and outside of school, including working with relevant agencies to address any issues related to child protection. Students are informed of who they should go to should they have a concern about their own safety or the safety of others. At INA, all staff have regular safeguarding training to ensure that they are able to meet their statutory responsibilities. We also have a number of staff who are designated to respond to any child protection concerns and to liaise with social services:

Dear Parents and Carers, In this edition you will find an update from Ms Alibhai on our Sixth Form Applications. We are delighted by the number! We have been busy in the past few days recruiting teachers of new A level subjects: Psychology, Politics and Economics. I am also delighted to announce that the Year 12 will have two Pastoral Leaders: Mr Singh (their Year 11 Pastoral Leader) and Ms Mayet, who is currently an A level teacher at Sir John Cass School in Tower Hamlets. The Year 11 exam timetable is included in this week’s edition of the newsletter. We will be holding a GCSE Exam Preparation Evening for all Year 11s and their parents on Tuesday 14th March. It is essential that every family is represented at this meeting by an adult. I wanted to give you advance notice of our next Independent Learning Day, on Monday 27th February. On this day all students will study from home, on assignments that have been set up by their teachers, using resources on Fronter and/or the website. Your child will have expectations explained by their teachers in their subject lesson in next two school weeks. And lastly, I should like to introduce you to my new PA:

Sam Jones, PA to the Principal I joined INA in December as Ms Macfarlane’s Personal Assistant (PA). I have been working as a PA for a couple of years now and enjoy the variety that the role brings, but this is my first time working within a school. I am very impressed with all the students I come across who are always respectful, polite and helpful. A little bit about me: I grew up and went to school in Cambridge; my favourite subjects included P.E, English and Geography, and I represented the county in both Hockey and Rugby for several years. At school I

was always interested in anatomy and how the body works and with all the sport I played I wanted to understand more about sports injuries, which led me on to study a Sports Therapy degree at university. After that I started work with a National League rugby team which I still do alongside my role here at INA. I have grown fond of Isaac Newton Academy and the principles and values that lie at its core as a school. It has been a pleasure to have been accepted into the INA family; everybody has made me feel very welcome and I look forward to working with more of you in the future. With best wishes,

Year 8 Progress meeting is calendared for Tuesday 7th February 2017 from 2:30-6:30pm. All students will complete lessons P1 – 4a (Year 10 and Year 11 students will complete lesson 4a as per KS3 timings). P4a will finish for all students at 1:05pm. Students will return to tutor groups from 1:05-1:15pm. Students who are eligible for Free School Meals who request lunch in advance (via form tutors) can collect a lunch bag from the KS3 desk area as they leave. Tutors will escort students to the KS3 gate at 1:15 where students are expected to go directly home. Year 8 students will return between 2:30-6:30pm with parents/carers/adult family member. Students are expected to attend with an adult family member in full school uniform. The progress meeting will take place in the KS3 Hall. The last appointment is 6:25pm for a 6:30pm finish. Staff will set independent learning for Years 7, 9, 10 and 11 in advance for P5 and 6. The school will be closed to Years 7, 9, 10 and 11 from 1:15. Enrichments and detentions will not take place. INA Sixth Form Interviews Monday 27th February 2017

As you may be aware, the deadline for the applications was on Friday 27th January. We are pleased to announce that we have received approximately 320 applications. We are delighted that almost 90% of our Year 11 cohort have applied and we have received applications from students from Seven Kings, Beale, Valentines, Mayfield, Walthamstow School for Girls, Ilford Grammar, Little Ilford School and Woodford County. We are delighted to announce that a number of interviews will take place on Monday 27th February 2017 during the Independent Learning Day. All internal applicants will be invited in to interview on this day and we will have some external applicants on this day too. Interviews will take approximately 20 minutes. Students will be receiving details of their appointments in due course however please can I take this opportunity to give parents and carers advance notice of this date. Unfortunately we are unable to issue offers to students who do not attend with a parent/carer as this is a key meeting to support with students’ transition to the Sixth Form. We look forward to meeting with you and supporting your son/daughter through to the Sixth Form.

Monday 27th February is an Independent Learning day This day is the second Independent Learning day of the year when students will complete their learning independently at home. Students will not attend the Academy on this day unless requested by to do so by a Head of Department for some intensive revision or learning . The purpose of the day is for students to consolidate and extend their learning in their various subjects. This will help to develop students’ BRIDGES skills of self-discipline, independence, discovery, organisation and adaptability and other important learning dispositions. Teachers have given careful consideration to the tasks they are setting for the day which can be accessed remotely on Fronter. There will be opportunities to practise key skills, elaborate upon prior learning, explore concepts and knowledge in more depth, revise for upcoming exams and assessments and to do some pre-learning tasks. Stretch and challenge tasks will be also available. It would be helpful if parents can ensure that the learning set by teachers is completed to a high standard.

Praise and Recognition

At INA, we aim to provide a stimulating, challenging and rewarding learning environment which supports learning, celebrates achievement and encourages everyone. Awarding merits, informal praise in class and the end of term awards assemblies are all part of this. Please speak to your child/children on a regular basis to see how many merits they have and how they are working towards the different awards on offer.

Merits

It has been a great start to the merit race for 2017. A massive well done to all the students who have worked hard to get merits so far! Remember that there are merits awarded for gaining 25/50/100/150 merits over the academic year, so set yourself a target to try to achieve! Also your merits help push your form up to the top of the leaderboard, so it will be interesting to see which forms wins in each year group for this term! Ahmed Al-Khafaji Award (Peer Commendation Award) Ahmed was well known for being kind, for helping others and for being extremely polite. He was also someone known for his hard work and absorption. Remembering & Ma Sir Isaac Newton Sir Isaac Newton [1643 - 1727] was an English physicist, mathematician, astronomer, natural philosopher, alchemist and theologian. He is considered by many to be the greatest and most influential scientist who ever lived. He made connections between the world of maths, physics and astrology to propose the three laws of motion. He also invented the mathematical branch of calculus, proved light was made up of a spectrum of all colours, designed the reflecting telescope (which we still mostly use today) and is even rumoured to be the inventor of the cat flap! Newton had an incredible memory which enabled him to produce work at an extraordinary level. He also kept meticulous notes (a technique he used for remembering and making connections) using a logical filing system which made them easy to find.

Attendance Regular attendance is a crucial factor in students’ educational development and ability to achieve their full potential. How to support your son/daughter with their exams Each week we will post tips on how you can support your son/daughter's exam preparation and revision building up to their exams from May 2017 onwards

Tips of the Week • Find out what support the school offers for revision (e.g. additional classes after school) via the school website or by asking the subject teacher or Year Head. • Support your child in choosing one good revision aid - book, app or website - for each subject. It's the best investment you will make. There are lots around so check with the teacher yourself if your child isn't aware of any guidance the school has offered (it may not seemed important to your child at the time!)

THIS WEEK IN P.E……………… AT INA Year 7 Netball Match Report On Monday 30th January 2017 the Year 7 girls’ netball team played a match against Ursuline Academy. Ursuline played extremely well but INA used their netball skills and determination to defend their goal. Even though we did not score as many goals as them we showed great grit and energy to get the ball into their circle on numerous occasions. All of us did our best to play our part throughout the game, ending the match feeling very proud of ourselves for limiting them to fewer and fewer shots as the match progressed. We learnt a lot throughout the game and our defending skills greatly improved, learning a lot from each quarter and rectifying our mistakes. Year 7 Basketball Team have a good first game, despite loss The Year 7 Basketball team came up against an immensely strong Mayfield team in their first game. The guys had trained hard before their first game and showed a great performance level considering it was their first game. Certainly in the second half the team really grew into the game with strong performances from the likes of Dawud Bakari. Despite the team’s best efforts they unfortunately could not stop the very strong Mayfield side.

INA gains Sainsbury’s School Games Gold Award!

The Sainsbury’s school games awards are given to schools for their commitment to extra-curricular sports, enrichment and sports leadership. It is great to see that the INA P.E. department have been awarded with the “Gold” award for this after their immense commitment to these areas. A big thank you on behalf of Mr Beattie has to go to the P.E. staff for the large amount of time they dedicate to extra-curricular sport and enrichment, particularly to Mr Healey who was in charge of this area during the last academic year. We would like to thank all students who participate in teams and sports enrichment clubs for their huge contribution too. 3 February 2017

On Saturday 21st January, a group of KS4 students, myself included, travelled all the way across London to visit the Playhouse Theatre by Embankment. We were a small group, consisting of only four students – Aliya Vahora (10W), Natasha Mahmood (10W), Rajveer Aytan (10W), Simran Bilku (11N) – and two teachers – Mr Taylor and Ms Rudd. We travelled on the underground, and indulged ourselves in the surroundings. The train journey was interesting, including everything from conversations about Donald Trump to a pigeon on the train. But we weren’t just going for the journey; we were going to watch live theatre of Stephen Daldry’s Olivier Award Winning production of J.B. Priestley’s classic thriller, An Inspector Calls. It was an exhilarating experience! The play is darkly sinister and deeply mysterious. It all starts when a wealthy upper-middle class family’s dinner party is interrupted by an unexpected visit from a mysterious man. The man, who calls himself ‘Inspector Goole’, sets quickly to work, questioning the entire family about their potential involvement in the death of a young and innocent working-class woman, who he says has committed suicide. Following a lengthy interrogation, not only is each character forced to examine their own conscience, but each member of the audience is as well.

The actors were amazing. The whole ambiance of being in a theatre, watching people taking interest and watching actors act, made the whole event worthwhile. I loved the whole experience; it was something new, and, as I had not watched nor read the play before, it was exciting. And although we went there to help us fill our cultural passports, we saw many protesters of the ‘Women’s March’, which was yet another great experience, even if we didn’t get to see many. And so the day was spent well exploring London and enhancing our drama and social skills, on a Saturday afternoon, thanks to Ms. Rudd. By Aliya Vahora
