Southern Entrance
We would like to remind parents and carers that the gate at the southern entrance will be locked at 08:23 each morning. Students arriving after this time should enter via the main entrance in Cricklefield Place.
Safeguarding
The welfare and safety of our students is our priority. We do everything possible to ensure our students’ safety, both within the school community and outside of school, including working with relevant agencies to address any issues related to child protection. Students are informed of who they should go to should they have a concern about their own safety or the safety of others. At INA, all staff have regular safeguarding training to ensure that they are able to meet their statutory responsibilities. We also have a number of staff who are designated to respond to any child protection concerns and to liaise with social services:
Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL) Jo Spencer Vice Principal Deputy Designated Safeguarding Lead (DDSL) Tam Broadway Primary Headteacher Designated Child Protection Officers Eleanor Seale Office Manager Leanne Abbott-Jones Assistant Principal Gareth Marshall-Jones Primary Deputy Headteacher Patrick Ball Pastoral Leader
You can find the INA Safeguarding policy, Child Protection policy and other related policies and procedures on the Academy’s website.

Dear Parents and Carers,
On Tuesday this week we were visited by 20 Head teachers from a range of schools in Lambeth and Southwark. They toured both the secondary and primary phases and met with many students to discuss their learning experience at INA. They were very impressed with our students (as visitors always are!) and said they were especially struck by the positive relationships they witnessed and the wide range of opportunities our students have. During the Easter holidays many of our teachers are kindly running revision sessions for the Year 11s. Some are invite-only and others are open access (with a requirement for students to sign up in advance).  Please see the details in this week’s newsletter. Yesterday I met with all the Year 11s to explain arrangements for Study Leave. This is detailed in the exams booklet that parents collected on Tuesday evening and is also outlined in a letter that was given to Year 11s to take home after the assembly. Please do ask if you have any questions. Thank you to those of you who have already completed and submitted the survey monkey parent questionnaire. If you have not yet had a chance to but can find time in the next few days that would be greatly appreciated! And finally, I should like to introduce you to Sandyha Venu, our new Learning Assistant, who joined our SEND team two weeks ago:
Sandyha Venu, Learning Assistant I consider myself very fortunate to be a part of INA community. I am thrilled and ecstatic to the prospects of working as a Cover Supervisor within the school. I have been amazed since day one with the principles and values the school follows, along with it being a school that is focused on child development.

The INA community has been very welcoming and it feels like I have joined a big happy family. I started my career in India with a Masters in Geology, and Bachelor degree in Education, after which I worked as a Science teacher in a wonderful school for secondary school kids. Since moving to the UK, two exciting years have passed: I started with volunteering in libraries for summer reading, rhymes and story time activities for young children and most recent have been a Learning Assistant in a school. I have always wanted a career in education because I believe that it is one of the most important functions in life. I strongly believe that teachers, individually and collectively, can not only change the world but shape the future. I spend most of my free time travelling and trying out cuisines with my husband. With best wishes,
Rachel Macfarlane

A Warm Invite to
INA’s End of Spring Term Awards Assemblies Monday 27th March — Year 8 Friday 31st March — Years 7, 9, 10 & 11
In the final week of term, we will be holding our second set of awards assemblies of the year. This is an opportunity for the staff, students, governors and parents/carers to formally celebrate our students’ achievements at the end of the spring term. There will be a separate assembly for each year group. Please note the dates and times as follows:
Monday 27th March 8.55-9.45
Year 8 Awards assembly
Friday 31st March
11.05am Y7 Awards Assembly (KS3 hall) Y9 Awards Assembly (Dining hall) 12.00pm Y10 Awards Assembly (KS3 hall) Y11 Awards Assembly (Dining hall) 1.00pm Students dismissed At the assemblies we will be presenting awards in recognition of students’ academic progress and attainment, personal progress and the development of their BRIDGES dispositions. Excellent attendance and punctuality will also be celebrated. It is also a great opportunity for you to see some examples of the activities and events your child has participated in this term. We believe that it is important that every student is represented by a parent at the Awards Assembly for their year group and would like to invite one parent to attend on behalf of the family. If you would like to attend, please ask your son/daughter to collect a ticket for the awards assembly from his/her form tutor. Please request your ticket by Monday 20th March. Due to limited capacity, we are unable to accommodate very many additional family members. However, if you would like a second place, please notify the school office and we will do our best to allocate an additional ticket. I look forward to seeing you on the Monday 27th March (Year 8) and Friday 31st March (Years 7, 8, 9 & 10) Ms Spencer, Vice Principal 17 March 2017 Secondary Newsletter

Praise and Recognition
At INA, we aim to provide a stimulating, challenging and rewarding learning environment which supports learning, celebrates achievement and encourages everyone. Awarding merits, informal praise in class and the end of term awards assemblies are all part of this. Please speak to your child/children on a regular basis to see how many merits they have and how they are working towards the different awards on offer.
Merits
We are two weeks ago from the end of the Spring term merit race! A massive well done to all the students who have worked hard to get merits so far! Remember that there is an award for you gaining 25/50/100/150 merits over the academic year, so set yourself a target to achieve! Also your merits help push your form up to the top of the leader board. It will be interesting to see which form wins in each year group this term! If you are owed merits, make sure you remember to get them and good luck! YEAR 7

Budding Scientists in Years 8, 9 and 10 attend Science Live On Friday 10th March, 60 students, including me, had the amazing opportunity to travel to the Apollo Victoria Theatre and listen to many famous scientists talk about their area of expertise at Science Live, including Prof. Robert Winston, Prof. Andrea Sella, Prof. Jim Al-Khalili and Prof. Alice Roberts. I thought that all their talks were extremely inspiring and eye-opening, not only because of the subjects they were talking about but also their great passion throughout their talks. I would say my strong interest in science was expanded into different aspects of science even more. My favourite talk was by Dr Maggie Aderin-Pocock. Her talk entitled “Can you really reach your dreams?” was very inspiring and her aspiration of “Big Brother on Mars” could definitely be the next best thing. Overall, it was an amazing experience which I loved. Kaiya Greenidge 9S A huge well done to goes to all students for their participation and volunteering questions to the speakers following the talks. It was also great to see so many taking notes of the interesting information that the speakers were giving, as well as the top GCSE exam tips dispensed by the examiner. We’re looking forward to next year already! Dr Mounsey
Y10 students are thinking about Work Experience placements. They want to gain experience that will support them with their future careers. Can you support them by offering a placement at your place of work? We need placements in all work areas for 5 consecutive days from 3rd-7th July 2017. If you can support INA students please contact: Anu Patel (a.patel@isaacnewtonacademy.org) 8 Secondary Newsletter

Year 11 Study Leave - Summer 2017 The exam season starts on Monday 15th May and ends on Friday 23rd June. Half term is 29th May – 2nd June. Normal lessons for all students will continue until and including Friday 12th May. From Monday 15th May until Friday 26th May all Year 11 students will be in school all day and expected to attend their normal lessons if they are not in a GCSE exam. This will include pm lessons where they have an am exam, am lessons where they have a pm exam and lessons between am and pm exams, where applicable. Morning exams Each morning exam session will start at 8am. A 30 minute revision session (usually based in the dining hall) will occur from 8-8:30. At 8.30am a free breakfast will be provided for all Year 11 students taking the GCSE that morning. Afternoon exams Each afternoon exam session will start at 1pm (following KS4 lunch). A 30 minute revision session (usually based in the KS4 hall) will occur from 1-1:30. If a student has a lesson between a morning and afternoon exam, he/she should go to the lesson but the teacher will allow him/her to study for his/her afternoon exam rather than take part in the lesson. Teachers will continue with their Year 11 lessons right up until the final exam for that subject has been taken. Once the final exam has taken place, the student coming to the lesson will be allowed to get on with independent study for up-coming exams. The teacher will supervise and ensure that there is an atmosphere conducive to private study. From Monday 5th June, there will be study leave for Year 11 students. There will be a programme of revision lessons offered in the subjects where exams have not finished. Students will be expected to attend revision sessions that apply to them (although for some students who are good at revising independently these sessions will be optional and for others an invite will be issued and they will be required to attend.) There will be signing up arrangements so that staff know who they are expecting in advance of the session. Students will sign in and out at reception. At times when they do not have a revision lesson or an exam they will be expected to leave site to go home to revise. The last exam is on Friday 23rd June. We are planning to hold a pm Year 11 assembly on that day. The Graduation Ball is on the evening of Monday 10th July. Mr Crowther-Green, Assistant Principal

Talk by Aneeta Prem On Monday during our BRIDGES lesson, girls in Years 7, 8 and 9 had an extended assembly on female genital mutilation led by the author and human rights campaigner, Aneeta Prem. Aneeta is founder and President of Freedom Charity, which campaigns against forced marriage and female genital mutilation (FGM). She was instrumental in changing government policy on forced marriage in 2013. Aneeta is also a magistrate and chairs adult, family and youth courts in some of the busiest courts in London. At the end of the assembly, Aneeta gave every girl a gift of a copy of her new novel about FGM, Cut Flowers. Here’s what some of the girls wrote about Aneeta’s in their reflections: ‘This practice disgusts me and I think as a school we should create a campaign to put an end to FGM.’ Year 7 ‘It was extremely overwhelming because we discussed some things that were not easy. I now know the signs and am much more aware of the issues regarding FGM ‘ Year 7 ‘FGM is not acceptable. Learning about FGM and how 200 million women have gone through FGM worldwide is heart-breaking.’ Year 8 ‘I believe that I can make a change to stop FGM and forced marriages. I would like to make a change and be a young ambassador.’ Year 8 ‘I think that openly talking about FGM and forced marriages is good and that helping girls to understand and will benefit a lot of people.’ Year8 ‘I think that the assembly was very helpful and informative. The statistics were shocking, I’m very passionate about human rights and believe in feminism so I would like to find some way to help spread the message in school or in general.’ Year 9

Charity at Isaac Newton Academy In the run up to the spring holiday, our charity council at Isaac Newton Academy are having a drive to collect goods for a local foodbank. This is a wonderful opportunity for the INA community to help support the most vulnerable people in our wider local community. From now until the last day of term, each form room will have a box for the collection of donated goods from members of the form. It would be great if students could look for any extra goods that may be donated to a good cause and bring them in for the collection. Particularly suitable goods are: ✽✽ Tinned Meats ✽✽ Tinned Fish ✽✽ Milk (UHT/Powdered) ✽✽ Tinned Rice Pudding ✽✽ Fruit Juice (Long Life) ✽✽ Toiletries (e.g. Soap/ Toothpaste) ✽✽ Nappies (Size 5 & 6) ✽✽ Perishable goods cannot be collected. We are always bowled over by the enthusiasm and generosity of our community in supporting charitable events. Thank you for all your continued support with our charitable endeavours this year.
