Safeguarding
The welfare and safety of our students is our priority. We do everything possible to ensure our students’ safety, both within the school community and outside of school, including working with relevant agencies to address any issues related to child protection. Students are informed of who they should go to should they have a concern about their own safety or the safety of others. At INA, all staff have regular safeguarding training to ensure that they are able to meet their statutory responsibilities. We also have a number of staff who are designated to respond to any child protection concerns and to liaise with social services:

Dear Parents and Carers, This week the Year 7s have been battling against each other in the Inter-Form Maths Challenge, the Year 10s Football Team were in the semi-finals of the borough cup, Anushri competed against other regional finalists in the Redbridge Schools Speak Out Challenge and the Year 11 PE students had their practical GCSE assessment. All of theme rose admirably to the challenge and coped with the pressure like professionals! I am sure that the Year 8s will do the same tomorrow when they compete against each other at the annual Big Band Competition – good luck everyone! Many thanks to the staff who made these rich opportunities possible. I am delighted to announce the winner of the Year 7 Student Council poster competition on online bullying. This is Eashar Kaur Rihal (7N), with Safa Noor Kayani (7S) and Diya Rajput (7E) as runners up. Well done and thank you to all entrants! I should like to introduce you to our newest member of the English teaching team, Ms Khatun:
Saleha Khatun, English Teacher It has been a pleasure to be accepted into the community of INA. I have been teaching here for just over a month now and I have enjoyed every day. I completed my PGCE in 2016 and joined INA at the start of January as an English teacher. I’ve been asked by many of my students why I wanted to become a teacher and why English out of all subjects. I didn’t fall in love with English in primary school, or secondary school; it was actually my A Levels that drew me to the subject. I always had a love for books but it was studying one particular novel during my time at college that changed the game for me. The novel is called “The Colour Purple” by Alice Walker. It was studying this book that made me fall in love with English, and my teacher Mrs Moran who made me want to be a teacher. I always thought that if she could teach as amazingly as she did and make someone like me fall in love with a subject, I could do that as well. So, many years later here I am, teaching at an amazing school, with lovely students and incredible staff! 24 March 2017 Secondary Newsletter

In the final week of term, we will be holding our second set of awards assemblies of the year. This is an opportunity for the staff, students, governors and parents/carers to formally celebrate our students’ achievements at the end of the spring term. There will be a separate assembly for each year group. Please note the dates and times as follows:
Monday 27th March 8.55-9.45
Year 8 Awards assembly
Friday 31st March
11.05am Y7 Awards Assembly (KS3 hall) Y9 Awards Assembly (Dining hall) 12.00pm Y10 Awards Assembly (KS3 hall) Y11 Awards Assembly (Dining hall) 1.00pm Students dismissed At the assemblies we will be presenting awards in recognition of students’ academic progress and attainment, personal progress and the development of their BRIDGES dispositions. Excellent attendance and punctuality will also be celebrated. It is also a great opportunity for you to see some examples of the activities and events your child has participated in this term. We believe that it is important that every student is represented by a parent at the Awards Assembly for their year group and would like to invite one parent to attend on behalf of the family. If you would like to attend, please ask your son/daughter to collect a ticket for the awards assembly from his/her form tutor. Please request your ticket by Monday 20th March. Due to limited capacity, we are unable to accommodate very many additional family members. However, if you would like a second place, please notify the school office and we will do our best to allocate an additional ticket. I look forward to seeing you on the Monday 27th March (Year 8) and Friday 31st March (Years 7, 8, 9 & 10) Ms Spencer, Vice Principal 24 March 2017 Secondary Newsletter

Praise and Recognition
At INA, we aim to provide a stimulating, challenging and rewarding learning environment which supports learning, celebrates achievement and encourages everyone. Awarding merits, informal praise in class and the end of term awards assemblies are all part of this. Please speak to your child/children on a regular basis to see how many merits they have and how they are working towards the different awards on offer.
Merits
We are one week ago from the end of the Spring term merit race! A massive well done to all the students who have worked hard to get merits so far! Remember that there is merit awards for you gaining 25/50/100/150 merits over the academic year, so set yourself a target to achieve! Also your merits help push your form up to the top of the leader board, so it will be interesting to see which forms win in each year group this term! If you are owed merits, make sure you remember to get them and good luck! YEAR 7

The Youth Travel Ambassadors of INA had to give a pitch to the organisers of the Youth Travel Ambassadors scheme to explain to them what our travel issues were and what their travel plan was. If they thought it was good enough, with all the issues and solutions well explained, they then would agree to give them £250, to implement the solutions. This is how it went... Ishan:
Good Morning, we are the youth travel ambassadors from Isaac Newton Academy in Seven Kings, and we all determined to make our school a better place.
Salma:
We are all in year 8, and here to pitch about the travel issues in our school.
Simra :
This year the issues we have targeted and want to work on are ▪ Cars stopping suddenly, meaning that parents don’t park properly in the spaces provided but stop outside the entrance for their convenience. ▪ We have lots off congestion with an over-flow off cars.. ▪ Pollution, having a lot of congestion means there is a lot of pollution, creating a non- eco-friendly environment. ▪ Double and Triple parking. ▪ Cars speeding around the car park, making it unsafe to cross

Kisanth:
We would like to address the fact that our target audience is secondary students, as they make their own way to school as well as addressing primary and secondary parents.
Ria:
Here is a pie chart representing the results from a survey we did in year 8 about travel issues. As you can see, one of the main concerns was pedestrians crossing.
Salma:
We have all created a video that we would like to show you and in this video we are addressing the main issues in our car park.
Nahar:
We are still waiting for the results from our experiment, and once we have received them we are going to survey parents and students on how shocked they are by the results.
Shama:
The community event. In the summer term, most likely May, we would like to run a community event. This would include inviting parents and local members of the community to join us on a Tuesday at around 6pm in our school hall to discuss the local issue of pollution and to inform them on the ways the car park is being used and how it should be used. This would give people a great opportunity to discuss this issue with the local community. This would allow us to get feedback from the public as well as informing them on the issues we have, to hopefully resolve our issue. Things we would need would be: ▪ posters ▪ banners- from www.banners.co.uk ▪ food ▪ a speaker (most likely from TFL) ▪ Activities, such as a smoothie blender bicycle. The way we would measure the impact it has on the car park is by filming before and after the event, then watching it over and seeing the difference it has in terms of, if it is still congested and people are still double parking.
Shama:
Another event that we would like to run is a competition. We would like to run this through year 8, in April. It would be a competition that would require groups of 5 or 6 to invent a product that will reduce the pollution in their daily life. This would mean that they would have to research about pollution that would then inform them on the bad impact it has which would also encourage them to stop using cars to get to school but instead walk or cycle. The prize and motivation for this competition, if we were given the money, would Nandos’ vouchers worth £30. The way we will measure our success is to have a survey asking year 8 students what they know about pollution and its effects before and after the competition.

Shama:
Thank you for listening and we hope you take our issues and money needed into consideration.
Kisanth: We would like to ask if you have any questions. The pitch took place in our school hall and we were joined by four other schools, five schools in total. We also had three judges, judging everyone’s pitch to see it they deserved the £250. The order in which the schools presented their pitch was very fair and was simply picked out of a hat. Isaac Newton Academy was called out to pitch last, but they definitely saved the best till last! The Youth Travel Ambassadors gave a confident pitch, explaining all that they wanted to do and the effect it would have on the school. They then presented a video to visually show the issues and it was a big success. We were asked for the video to be shown to the schools that attended the event and it has also been shown to years 7, 8, 9 and 10 in assembly, to give them a wakeup call. Whilst the judges deliberated, the YTA members got to socialise with members from other schools, discussing with them their issues as well as ours. It was a very successful day and all five schools ended up going home with £250. Shama Daula

Year 11 Study Leave - Summer 2017 The exam season starts on Monday 15th May and ends on Friday 23rd June. Half term is 29th May – 2nd June. Normal lessons for all students will continue until and including Friday 12th May. From Monday 15th May until Friday 26th May all Year 11 students will be in school all day and expected to attend their normal lessons if they are not in a GCSE exam. This will include pm lessons where they have an am exam, am lessons where they have a pm exam and lessons between am and pm exams, where applicable. Morning exams Each morning exam session will start at 8am. A 30 minute revision session (usually based in the dining hall) will occur from 8-8:30. At 8.30am a free breakfast will be provided for all Year 11 students taking the GCSE that morning. Afternoon exams Each afternoon exam session will start at 1pm (following KS4 lunch). A 30 minute revision session (usually based in the KS4 hall) will occur from 1-1:30. If a student has a lesson between a morning and afternoon exam, he/she should go to the lesson but the teacher will allow him/her to study for his/her afternoon exam rather than take part in the lesson. Teachers will continue with their Year 11 lessons right up until the final exam for that subject has been taken. Once the final exam has taken place, the student coming to the lesson will be allowed to get on with independent study for up-coming exams. The teacher will supervise and ensure that there is an atmosphere conducive to private study. From Monday 5th June, there will be study leave for Year 11 students. There will be a programme of revision lessons offered in the subjects where exams have not finished. Students will be expected to attend revision sessions that apply to them (although for some students who are good at revising independently these sessions will be optional and for others an invite will be issued and they will be required to attend.) There will be signing up arrangements so that staff know who they are expecting in advance of the session. Students will sign in and out at reception. At times when they do not have a revision lesson or an exam they will be expected to leave site to go home to revise. The last exam is on Friday 23rd June. We are planning to hold a pm Year 11 assembly on that day. The Graduation Ball is on the evening of Monday 10th July. Mr Crowther-Green, Assistant Principal

Oxbridge Interview Questions In anticipation of our upcoming first cohort of sixth form students in September; it is pertinent that our students begin to think more deeply about universities and the route they would like to take in higher education. It’s well known that Cambridge and Oxford have gruelling entrance examinations and would-be Oxbridge undergraduates are invited to attend an interview, to be asked “unanswerable” questions - brain-teasers designed to explore the far reaches of their mind, test their lateral thinking and expose weaknesses in their ability to argue, process and reason. In order to prepare our students for such daunting tasks we are offering students the chance to their skills at such “unanswerable questions” and every week we will ask what is now known as an “Oxbridge question”. This competition is open to all students from all year groups; please answer the question on a typed A4 sheet of paper. The answer should be no more than one side and should be submitted either via email to info@ isaacnewtonacademy.org or a printed copy can be left in G.43 (clearly addressed to Mr. Dewal). The following link should help students if they are struggling or wish to research on how to answer these tough questions: www.telegraph.co.uk/education/universityeducation/11284676/Could-youanswer-the-toughest-Oxbridge-question.html This week’s question goes as follows: How would you describe a human to a person from Mars? (Asked in interviews for Medicine at Cambridge) Get your thinking caps on and get those brain cells firing! Good luck and best wishes, Mr. A. Dewal, Mathematics teacher/Ambassador for Higher Attainers

Attendance Regular attendance is a crucial factor in students’ educational development and ability to achieve their full potential. At Isaac Newton Academy every student is set the target of 100% attendance. We know that attendance has a direct link to progress, and would urge you to really consider if a day off school is necessary. Congratulations to 8W, 10I and 10S for 100% attendance last week. Year 9 are the top year group for the week with 98.1% 7A

Charity at Isaac Newton Academy In the run up to the spring holiday, our charity council at Isaac Newton Academy are having a drive to collect goods for a local foodbank. This is a wonderful opportunity for the INA community to help support the most vulnerable people in our wider local community. From now until the last day of term, each form room will have a box for the collection of donated goods from members of the form. It would be great if students could look for any extra goods that may be donated to a good cause and bring them in for the collection. Particularly suitable goods are: ✽✽ Tinned Meats ✽✽ Tinned Fish ✽✽ Milk (UHT/Powdered) ✽✽ Tinned Rice Pudding ✽✽ Fruit Juice (Long Life) ✽✽ Toiletries (e.g. Soap/ Toothpaste) ✽✽ Nappies (Size 5 & 6) ✽✽ Perishable goods cannot be collected. We are always bowled over by the enthusiasm and generosity of our community in supporting charitable events. Thank you for all your continued support with our charitable endeavours this year.
