Safeguarding Children As part of their curriculum, the children learn how to keep themselves safe. The following website has been set up by the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children (NSPCC) to offer parents and schools advice on how to raise safeguarding awareness with children. There is a notable section called ‘The Underwear Rule’ which is of particular support and guidance to parents. The website also offers advice regarding ‘online safety’ and how to obtain support or advice regarding the safeguarding of children. www.nspcc.org.uk

End & Start of the School Day Arrangements Please be reminded that Year 3 & 4 children are expected to start their day 10 minutes earlier than other year groups at 8.35am and finish their day 10 minutes earlier at 3.35pm. It is important that this valuable 10 minutes is not lost every day as this soon mounts up to a considerable amount of learning time lost each week. As we are now finding ourselves in the winter months there is an increased chance that it will be raining at the end of the day. Therefore, when we encounter rain, we have put in place the following plan to dismiss the Year 2 and 3 children from the stairwells and hall doors rather than have them lining up on the playground

Year 2 Year 2 will be dismissed at their usual time with Pythagoras exiting from the double doors by the hall. Fibonacci will use the stairwell nearest to the library and Al-Kashi will use the stairwell nearest to the Reception classes.

Years 3 and 4 Year 3 will be dismissed at their usual time with Ellington and Nicks exiting from the stairwell by the reception classes. Shankar and Ramanujan will exit from the stairwell by the library and Lovelace and Mirzakhani exiting by the double doors nearest the hall. This will take longer to give out the children as the teachers will only be able release one child at a time, so we ask that you remain patient while we check everyone goes home safely. Thank you in advance for your support.

Absences immediately before or after a school holiday If your child is absent before or after a school holiday we must see evidence for the absence. This may be medical evidence if your child is unwell, or evidence of flight delays or circumstances beyond your control. We cannot authorise any absences before or after a holiday without this evidence and you risk being issued with a penalty notice.

Message from the Year 4 Team Next half term, Year 4 will be designing and creating their own chocolate boxes in line with our topic: What are the origins of chocolate? For the first topic lesson of the term, the classes will be evaluating pre-existing chocolate box designs. In order to do this, we would greatly value any donated, empty chocolate boxes that you have spare. Due to pupils with nut allergies in our year group, we would ask that we only receive empty chocolate boxes for chocolates without nuts.

Breakfast and Afterschool Club Every parent has Wisepay details and a password, which will enable you to book a place for ‘Breakfast Club’ or ‘After School Club’. Payments must be made in advance. If you experience any problems, please contact Ms Chaggar who will be happy to help. Breakfast is available each day from 7.45am and costs just £2.50 per day. The children enjoy a range of cereals, toast and different topping, juice or milk and fruit. Any child attending must be brought to the main reception area by 8.20am at the latest. After School Club runs from 3.45pm – 6.00pm (3.00pm – 6.00pm on Tuesdays) and costs just £5.50 per hour. The children enjoy a range of snacks each evening and a variety of games and activities.

Lovely Learning Reception – Ginger Bread Making The Reception children were very busy this week making Ginger Bread Men in the cooking room. They had great fun measuring and weighing out the ingredients whilst developing their fine motor skills of mixing. The best and most fun part will be getting to eat them! Year 1 – Great Fire of London Science Lesson To wrap up their learning about the Great Fire of London in an exciting way, Year 1 pupils visited the Secondary school to watch an experiment comparing the burning rates of wood, brick and metal. From this memorable experience, the children found out that one of the main reasons for the quick and wide spread of the Great Fire of London was that the houses were built out of wood, a material that catches light easily and burns quickly. A huge thank you to the Science department for organising such an informative and exciting lesson!

O

NEWS

n Thursday 10th December, 2018, the children in Year 3 and 4 got together to perform a KS2 Winter Concert. There was a huge range of performances – we can’t believe we fit so much in! Below, we will take you through the amazing array of performances that took place, and the wonderful instruments that we got to use!

Big Band The trumpet performance was amazing! Mr Beasley taught us the trumpet, and he did a fantastic job with his teaching of the song ‘Love Yourself’ by Justin Bieber. This performance was loved by all – many thanks to Mr Beasley. The trombone performance was very enthusiastic and energetic, due to the fact that a few children did an introduction, and seemed really happy about their performance. Beforehand, Year 4 had been learning all about how to manipulate the trombone’s sound. The Year 4 students played ‘Oh When The Saints’ – which was joined by lots of big movements and gestures! Thank you to Mr Coughlin for helping Year 4 students with this. The dhol drum performance was very loud, but was very good! Mr Kampanos did a fantastic job of teaching the dhol group different beats (such as the ‘cool’ beat!).

Enrichment Club Performances The Djembe performers (who were taught by Mr Mansell) performed a sequence of tapping, rubbing and hitting. Everyone performed a drumming pattern of their own, and they made an exquisite sound! The recorder club (taught by Ms West) performed Christmas songs, such as Jingle Bells (which got some audience participation!) they also used egg shakers to add to the recorder joy. Thank you to Ms West and Mr Mansell who have worked really hard this term to perfect these performances.

21 December 2018 Individual Year Group Performances During the winter concert, the Year 4 song was ‘Sweet Child O’ Mine’. Six students from Mirzakhani class made up their own moves, they also had their own stage! During the Year 3 performance, the children performed ‘Jingle Bells’ using egg shakers, glockenspiels and ukuleles. Mr Morgan taught each year group their songs, so a big thanks to him for making the performances as amazing as they were! Mr Morgan also created the ‘BRIDGES of INA’ song which was a great addition to the concert and a very informative song.

Joint Performances We also had some joint KS2 performances. We really loved the way that everyone remembered the tricky moves during the Waka Waka song. We also loved how everyone at the end punched the air in unison, we thought that looked great! As a joint group, we also performed ‘We Wish You a Merry Christmas’ together, which was very exciting and a great way to end the show. We think all of the music teachers worked very hard to help us to create this amazing winter concert, and we would like to congratulate them as without them, it would not be possible. Also, a huge thank you to everyone who was involved, including teachers, students, and parents.

BRIDGES in the Primary Phase “We build too many walls and not enough bridges. Isaac Newton BRIDGES are habits of mind or learning characteristics that develop a pupil's character and learning power and enable him/her to grow into a well-rounded individual and resilient learner. There are seven BRIDGES habits that we will be working on, which will rotate on a weekly cycle throughout the year. The BRIDGES habit of the week will always be introduced at the beginning of the week during the Monday assembly and reinforced throughout the week across the curriculum. Each class teacher will award a certificate to a pupil that they feel has demonstrated the BRIDGES focus for the week. Each week we will update you on the BRIDGES habit that will be introduced in the coming week and offer some top tips on how to reinforce the habit at home too. Please also refer to the Primary BRIDGES wheel below.

Week commencing 8th January 2019

Bravery Bravery comprises five dispositions: Leadership Optimism

Risk-taking

Courage Experimentation

At School •

• •

We encourage the children to try new things and experiment every day whether it is a food that they have not tried before or new activities that they may not normally choose during the afternoon sessions. For Year 1 and 2 we would encourage the children to try different reading books or authors/topics they might not normally consider reading or to experiment with the paint during art – trying to create different effects etc. We always encourage the children to have courage when they fall over and hurt themselves and to remain as calm as possible while we help them. We aim for all pupils to demonstrate their leadership skills by helping others, being smart in their appearance, being kind, having good manners and generally demonstrating all their BRIDGES characteristics. We encourage some of the quieter pupils to have the courage to share their ideas in class and to have work with optimism and develop a real ‘can do’ attitude.

At Home • •

• •

Encourage your child to try as many different things as possible – whether it is food, different enrichment clubs, books etc. Support your child to develop their own mind and not just follow what everyone else is doing. It is important that the pupils are able to try things without worrying about getting it wrong or worrying about what other people think. Celebrate the fact that by making mistakes we are always learning. Give examples of times when you have had to be brave and try something for the first time, or when something did not go so well the first time but you learned from the mistakes you made and got better. Help remind your child at home about being smart in their appearance and rolemodelling good behaviour through their leadership skills. Allow your child to help with jobs and roles at home, taking on the responsibility for cleaning their room, keeping their books or toys organised etc.
