Message from Ms Wilcox

As we prepare to harvest our potatoes in a couple of weeks, your help checking at home whether you have any old wellies, washing up tubs or other containers that you are able to donate would be invaluable. Any container that it is possible to drill some drainage holes in will do! We want to put the soil currently in our potato grow bags, which will be nutrient rich from the potatoes, straight into receptacles that can be used to grow more things in. Please bring any containers you have either to the school office or to me in Fitzgerald Class. Many thanks in advance.

Cat's Cradle! It’s been great watching the pupils play ‘Cat’s Cradle’ with each other at every opportunity in the playground and observing how expertly they create each of the patterns and combinations. From such a simple game I have witnessed our pupils helping each other, teaching each other and certainly using a range of BRIDGES dispositions to continue to improve their skills.

As you can see from the pictures, the pupils were extremely brave and happy to touch the animals and for some to even have the snake placed around their shoulders!

Pupil Progress Meetings and Reports The Pupil Progress Reports will be sent out this term on Friday 12th July, these will include the SATs scores and converted levels for Year 2 pupils and the Phonics Screening Scores for Year 1. The Parent Progress Meetings will take place on Tuesday 16th July sign up times will be live from Friday 5th July at 5pm and will close on Wednesday 10th July at 12pm. School will finish at 12.15pm on Tuesday 16th July as well as the last day of term on Tuesday 23rd July.

Wonderful Writing Week In the aim of raising the profile of writing across the school we hold a ‘Wonderful Writing Week’ once each half term. This of course does not mean that we would not expect wonderful writing every week but thought it would be great way to encourage the pupils to really show us what they can do. We ask that you encourage and support your child at home during these weeks and get them to do as much writing as possible, this could be in the form of a shopping list, a letter, story writing or instructions for a recipe or game – anything at all. We are looking for neat writing and sentences with capital letters and full stops. Pupils now need to read their own writing to ensure it makes sense and that they are beginning to use a range of punctuation and taking care of their spellings. Year 3 upwards need to ensure they are beginning to use a wide range of punctuation, spelling with increased accurately both familiar and unfamiliar words and ensuring their handwriting is clearly and neatly formed. At the end of the week two children from each class will be awarded a certificate in recognition of their hard work and effort. Thank you for your support! 28 June 2019

BRIDGES in the Primary Phase “We build too many walls and not enough bridges. Isaac Newton BRIDGES are habits of mind or learning characteristics that develop a pupil's character and learning power and enable him/her to grow into a well-rounded individual and resilient learner. There are seven BRIDGES habits that we will be working on, which will rotate on a weekly cycle throughout the year. The BRIDGES habit of the week will always be introduced at the beginning of the week during the Monday assembly and reinforced throughout the week across the curriculum. Each class teacher will award a certificate to a pupil that they feel has demonstrated the BRIDGES focus for the week. Each week we will update you on the BRIDGES habit that will be introduced in the coming week and offer some top tips on how to reinforce the habit at home too. Please also refer to the Primary BRIDGES wheel below.

Bravery

Bravery comprises five dispositions: Leadership Risk-taking Courage Optimism Experimentation

At School •

We encourage the children to try new things and experiment every day whether it is a food that they have not tried before or new activities that they may not normally choose during the afternoon sessions. For Year 1 and 2 we would encourage the children to try different reading books or authors/topics they might not normally consider reading or to experiment with the paint during art – trying to create different effects etc.

We always encourage the children to have courage when they fall over and hurt themselves and to remain as calm as possible while we help them.

We aim for all pupils to demonstrate their leadership skills by helping others, being smart in their appearance, being kind, having good manners and generally demonstrating all their BRIDGES characteristics.

We encourage some of the quieter pupils to have the courage to share their ideas in class and to have work with optimism and develop a real ‘can do’ attitude.

At Home •

Encourage your child to try as many different things as possible – whether it is food, different enrichment clubs, books etc.

Support your child to develop their own mind and not just follow what everyone else is doing. It is important that the pupils are able to try things without worrying about getting it wrong or worrying about what other people think.

Celebrate the fact that by making mistakes we are always learning. Give examples of times when you have had to be brave and try something for the first time, or when something did not go so well the first time but you learned from the mistakes you made and got better.

Help remind your child at home about being smart in their appearance and rolemodelling good behaviour through their leadership skills.

Allow your child to help with jobs and roles at home, taking on the responsibility for cleaning their room, keeping their books or toys organised etc.
