Dear Parents and Carers, On Saturday we held our Summer Fayre. It was an absolutely brilliant day, with hundreds of families coming to spend the afternoon browsing the many and varied stalls, tasting the fabulous food, listening to the students performing music and engaging in lots of fun activities. This day took a huge amount of organisation and hard work. I am indebted to Ms Broadway, Head of Primary, who led on the event and whose passion for working with parents and the school community shone through during the lead up to the fayre and on the day. I would also like to extend my deep gratitude to the members of FOINA (Friends of INA) who worked tirelessly to organise and run the event; their energy and community spirit has been inspiring! To all the parents and local businesses who contributed gifts, raffle prizes and food – many thanks. Many thanks also to all of the staff and students from primary, secondary and sixth form who ran activities and stalls on the day or just came along to help. And finally, thank you to all for coming along and being part of this great community event. I’m delighted to say that, apart from bringing the community together, the summer fayre raised around £6000 for the school! Jo Spencer, Interim Principal

Primary BRIDGES Mentoring – Session 2 On Thursday 4th July students from Year 3 and Year 4 experienced BRIDGES mentoring with 30 volunteer mentors from Year 9. The Year 9s had received mentor training and learnt about different questioning techniques such as how to encourage mentees to expand on their points. The primary students had prepared extremely well and were very confident in sharing their use of the Discovery BRIDGES dispositions. Haris Shaukat, a Year 9 mentor, has reflected on the experience: “We were impressed with how confident the Year 3 and Year 4 students were, for example they knew what all of the dispositions meant and had prepared examples of when they used them inside and outside of school. Even when we asked them tougher questions which they had not pre-prepared they were giving strong answers. The discussions often covered the importance of Discovery in different careers, and one of my mentees was explaining how he will use it in his future job as a palaeontologist. For the Year 9s it was tiring (we did 6 mentoring sessions back-to-back!) but very rewarding. I liked being on the side of the mentoring table. I would recommend other students to take on the role as BRIDGES mentors if they get the chance.” - Haris Shaukat, 9S “The mentoring was excellent because I got to distinguish between each of the dispositions and understand their meanings better. Also the mentors shared their own experiences which gave me a better understanding of the BRIDGES habits.” - Nadia Khan, Year 4 “I enjoyed the BRIDGES mentoring because it helped me heighten my understanding of the different dispositions. For example, the mentors told me how they used open mindedness and how this has helped them and now I know how I can be more open minded.” Ibrahim Ijaz, Year 4

Sports Day On Wednesday we enjoyed our Sports Day events. I am sure you will all agree when I say that it was a fantastic day! It was great to see so many parents and carers supporting the children and it certainly helped them to feel a sense of audience and purpose as you walked around the events with them. Seeing so many willing parents take part in the races was superb and highlights what great role models you are to the children every day. I know you were all immensely proud of the children and their great sporting attitude throughout the events, I also know that the children were equally proud watching their parents and carers demonstrating their BRIDGES habit too.

Eco-Ambassador Trip On Tuesday our Eco-Ambassadors stepped into MuRFy’s World, an interactive education centre in Beckton, to discover what really happens to our rubbish. After an informative presentation about the importance of Reducing, Reusing and Recycling, they had fun putting their learning to use practically in a carousel of activities. They used magnets to sort steel from aluminium for correct recycling. They reused scraps of fabric to create personalized bunting. They dressed up and role-played sorting rubbish along a conveyor belt into papers, metals, plastics and compostable food waste and hunted around for ingeniously recycled objects. Among the discoveries they found most fascinating was a pencil case made from a rubber tyre, a pot and jewellery made from newspaper and a bowl made from old keys! Enormous thanks to Mrs Chand, Mrs Master and Mrs Kamothi who kindly lent their support and were a fantastic help on our trip.

BRIDGES in the Primary Phase “We build too many walls and not enough bridges. Isaac Newton BRIDGES are habits of mind or learning characteristics that develop a pupil's character and learning power and enable him/her to grow into a well-rounded individual and resilient learner. There are seven BRIDGES habits that we will be working on, which will rotate on a weekly cycle throughout the year. The BRIDGES habit of the week will always be introduced at the beginning of the week during the Monday assembly and reinforced throughout the week across the curriculum. Each class teacher will award a certificate to a pupil that they feel has demonstrated the BRIDGES focus for the week. Each week we will update you on the BRIDGES habit that will be introduced in the coming week and offer some top tips on how to reinforce the habit at home too. Please also refer to the Primary BRIDGES wheel below.

Integrity

Integrity comprises six dispositions: Citizenship Justice Humility Honesty Fairness Humanity

At School •

• •

• •

At school we encourage the pupils to make sure they play in a kind and thoughtful way and ensure that they include others in their games. Games where ‘turn-taking’ is needed are great at helping the children to understand that everyone has fair turn. It is also important that the children learn how to win and lose a game graciously and show humility when they win or congratulate the winner and say well done if they lose. The children need to learn and understand the importance of telling the truth even when it feels uncomfortable when we have to admit that we have done something wrong. They also need to learn to take responsibility for their actions and not get into a habit of blaming others. It is important that the children have a moral sense of right and wrong. Each half term the class teacher chooses two ambassadors to help the pupils develop their citizenship skills and by helping with jobs in their class or at lunchtimes. We encourage every child to help keep the school environment clean by clearing away plates or cups after lunch or tidying up their own table place after activities in class.
