Safeguarding Children As part of their curriculum, the children learn how to keep themselves safe. The following website has been set up by the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children (NSPCC) to offer parents and schools advice on how to raise safeguarding awareness with children. There is a notable section called ‘The Underwear Rule’ which is of particular support and guidance to parents. The website also offers advice regarding ‘online safety’ and how to obtain support or advice regarding the safeguarding of children. www.nspcc.org.uk

From Tam Broadway – Primary Headteacher It has been a busy week with lots of lovely, interactive learning and ‘Discovery’ work going on. Our Black History Month celebrations are well underway, and the pupils have voted for their new School Council members. The children are eagerly learning songs for the Harvest Festival Assembly. Ms West has now put up Harvest Festival posters around the school and on the gates to advise us of the best items to donate over the coming weeks.
National Child Measurement Programme The NELFT Redbridge 0-19 Children’s Universal Services (who work as part of the NHS) will shortly be coming to the school and measuring children’s height and weight of pupils in Reception Year. This is as part of the National Child Measurement Programme. If you have a child in Reception Year you will receive a letter with information to explain about this in advance of when the measurements are taken. Result letters are sent out to parents approximately 6 weeks after the measurements have been taken. If attached to your results letter you receive an invite to a healthy lifestyle session we encourage you to attend.

After tough competition and lots of applications of interest, pupils from Year 2, 3, 4 and 5 were invited to prepare a 30 second speech to present in the assembly on Monday. They were asked to introduce themselves to the rest of the school, discuss their ideas for making the school even better and explain why they would make a great School Council member. Every pupil delivered a speech to be extremely proud of, but had they done enough to convince everyone else that they were the right people for the job? During the day classes had the opportunity to cast their vote by ticking the name of the person they wanted to choose and placing their vote in the ballot box. Congratulations to the following students:
Year 2 Hong Yip Zara Ijaz Year 3 Alisha Ali Avani Tathgar Year 4 Maryam Nawaz Jeevan Hunjan
Aryan Lakhani
Year 5 Faheem Ahmedabadi Ali Ullah
Avneet Chaggar
I am looking forward to my first meeting with the council and looking forward to hearing about all the exciting and creative ideas that they will have over the course of the next academic year to make the school even better.

Lovely Learning this week! Last week, Year 4 visited Mountfitchet Castle to support their learning on ‘What happened in 1066?’ The pupils investigated the different features of the castle and its functions as well as exploring what life would be like living in a Norman Village. A big thank you to all the parents and carers that were able to help out on the day!

Multicultural Dress Up Day Friday 18th October To celebrate the amazing diversity of our school community, we will be holding a Multicultural Food Fayre and Dress Up day on the last day of the half term, Friday 18th October. To raise funds for the school we are inviting the staff and children to pay £1 to wear traditional or cultural dress for the day. The staff are equally excited about dressing up and are planning their costumes as we speak! The children need to wear clothes that are practical, as they will still need to continue with their day-to-day routines and play. The Reception children will continue with their PE lesson in the afternoon, but the activities will be adapted to enable them to take part in their traditional costumes, so please help them choose clothing that will allow for them to do so.
Call for containers!
Year 1 would welcome any donations of old boxes you have – especially boxes that are cubes, cuboids, pyramids, cones or spheres – for our 3D shape learning in a couple of weeks’ time. Please drop them off either in Reception or directly to Britten, Fitzgerald or Glennie Class at the end of the day. With many thanks in advance.

Football Results
On Wednesday 25th September the Year 5 INA football team had their first ever football fixture against St Anthony’s Catholic Primary School. The team started strong, with Hari making some incredible saves and our defence putting in some strong and important challenges to keep the score low at the first whistle. Our attack was able to show off their skilfulness in the second half and a superb strike from Aqeel secured INA’s first ever primary school goal! The team worked extremely hard to maintain the pressure throughout the second half, but unfortunately could not withstand the experience and strength of St Anthony’s. The boys played very well and should be extremely proud of their first game!

Year 1 Reading This week you will be receiving reading books to enjoy at home with your child. Please make sure you bring these back each week on the correct day so they can be changed. (If your child’s book gets lost, your support in meeting the cost of its replacement would be appreciated. Please see your child’s class teacher so we can ascertain cost.) We hope you enjoy the stories and information texts and have lots of fun reading together over the week. Please read the book with your child more than once. Here are some ideas of ways you can get as much as possible from your book! 1. practise reading for accuracy, then speed and finally with expression 2. ask questions about the book – what has happened/What new facts have been discovered? Which character/fact did they like most and why? etc 3. spot words that begin with or contain given letters or sounds 4. consider what experience you have had that is similar to something in the book. 5. Think about what life lessons can be learnt from the book 6. Create a different ending for the story 7. Find 5 interesting words in the text, write down their meanings and use them in sentences of your own throughout the week… Reading Book Return and Change Days Britten – Monday Fitzgerald – Tuesday Glennie – Wednesday
Absences immediately before or after a school holiday If your child is absent before or after a school holiday we must see evidence for the absence. This may be medical evidence if your child is unwell, or evidence of flight delays or circumstances beyond your control. We cannot authorise any absences before or after a holiday without this evidence and you risk being issued with a penalty notice. 4 October 2019 Primary Newsletter

BRIDGES in the Primary Phase “We build too many walls and not enough bridges. Isaac Newton BRIDGES are habits of mind or learning characteristics that develop a pupil's character and learning power and enable him/her to grow into a well-rounded individual and resilient learner. There are seven BRIDGES habits that we will be working on, which will rotate on a weekly cycle throughout the year. The BRIDGES habit of the week will always be introduced at the beginning of the week during the Monday assembly and reinforced throughout the week across the curriculum. Each class teacher will award a certificate to a pupil that they feel has demonstrated the BRIDGES focus for the week. Each week we will update you on the BRIDGES habit that will be introduced in the coming week and offer some top tips on how to reinforce the habit at home too. Please also refer to the Primary BRIDGES wheel below.

Grit
Grit comprises seven dispositions: Perseverance Distractions Concentration Managing Resilience Determination Patience At School
• At part of our 6 pillars we continuously stress the importance to the children about managing distractions and concentrating during their learning time. • It is essential that from Reception upwards that the children become better at managing distractions and demonstrate that they can work on a task for a sustained period of time. • We always encourage a ‘can do’ resilient attitude and talk to the children about the importance of not giving up on a task too easily, even when it presents as a challenge, learning that ‘practice makes perfect’. • We discuss that having patience and trying something again, even though we may find it difficult, will lead to success. We also explain that patient can also mean not having what we want instantly and that sometimes we have to wait our turn.
At Home
• Encourage your child to try and complete things more independently – when they say they can’t do something – tell your child to have a go and to try a little harder. If then they are still completely stuck with a task, then offer a small amount of help to get them started. Offer encouragement and praise your child’s effort. • Talk to your child about how you learned to do things and how hard some things were for you too but through not giving up, being determined and practising you got better.
