From Tam Broadway – Primary Headteacher It was great to see so many of you at the coffee morning on Thursday. I spent time talking through some of the events that will be taking place for the remainder of the term and some of the highlights of the year to date that we are proud of. Some time was given to parents to give feedback on what they are happy with in the school but equally some areas for us to continue to develop. As always, we are very grateful for your time and suggestions. Minutes from the Coffee Morning will follow shortly. Please be reminded that there is no school for children on Friday 14th February due to staff training. This means that the children will break up for half term on Thursday 13th February at the usual time.

Enrichment Enrichment bookings will now be made through Wisepay and will go live at 5.00pm on Friday 7th February. The app will help make bookings and payments simpler by storing your log in and card details. This will not only be useful to make quick payments for trips and clubs. It will also be the new way in which we make Enrichment bookings. If you have lost or misplaced your Wisepay log in details, please contact the primary office before 5:00pm on Friday 7th Feb to avoid any disappointment.

Absences immediately before or after a school holiday If your child is absent before or after a school holiday we must see evidence for the absence. This may be medical evidence if your child is unwell, or evidence of flight delays or circumstances beyond your control. We cannot authorise any absences before or after a holiday without this evidence and you risk being issued with a penalty notice. Year 5 Why? Who? What?

Where?

When?

The home learning for Year 5 now includes an additional ‘unseen’ comprehension text for pupils to read and answer questions about. We have incorporated this into home learning to support pupils with the test expectations that we expect for the reading papers in Year 5 and 6. Pupils should aim to read the excerpt of text in 2 minutes or less and then answer the questions in timed conditions of 5-6 minutes. Full sentences are not required for the answers, but it is important that pupils are in the practice of timing themselves to these specifications.

Breakfast and Afterschool Club Every parent has Wisepay details and a password, which will enable you to book a place for ‘Breakfast Club’ or ‘After School Club’. Payments must be made in advance. If you experience any problems, please contact Ms Chaggar who will be happy to help. Breakfast is available each day from 7.45am and costs just £2.50 per day. The children enjoy a range of cereals, toast and different topping, juice or milk and fruit. Any child attending must be brought to the main reception area by 8.20am at the latest. After School Club runs from 3.45pm – 6.00pm (3.00pm – 6.00pm on Tuesdays) and costs just £5.50 per hour. The children enjoy a range of snacks each evening and a variety of games and activities.

Year 5 pupils visit Greenwich Royal Observatory Last week Year 5 pupils travelled to Greenwich Royal Observatory to continue their learning based around the topic of: What’s Out of This World? Pupils had the opportunity to explore the observatory museum, learning about the different planets, their individual features and identifying facts about the galaxies surrounding us. The highlight of the trip was the ‘Universe on your Doorstep’ workshop that all classes attended which gave them an interactive insight into our solar system and initiated some interesting discussions between pupils. We also saw a fantastic view of London from the top of the hill which made the steep climb very worthwhile!

Indoor Athletics On Thursday 30th January 2020, twelve of our Year 5 pupils represented INA in the Redbridge Indoor Athletics competition at Beal High School. The pupils all performed in two field events (jumping or throwing) and at least one running event, and competed against ten other schools. All of our athletes showed hard work and independence, but above all they displayed incredible grit when competing against mostly Year 6 pupils from other schools within the borough. Ms Bashir and I are extremely proud of the pupils and were particularly impressed by the encouragement and support the pupils showed one another both before and after their competitions. All field events were joint scores between 2 athletes.

Coronavirus Advice The government is closely monitoring the spread of the Coronavirus and is taking action at home and abroad. The overall risk of Coronavirus to the UK remains moderate. However we understand that people may be concerned where there are children, students or staff returning from or visiting China. Public Health England and the Foreign Office have issued advice for anyone travelling to the area. This can be found at: • •

https://www.gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice/china https://www.gov.uk/government/news/wuhan-novel-coronavirus-and-avian-flu-advice-fortravel-to-china

NHS ADVICE

If you have recently travelled to a high-risk area - or if you've been in contact with somebody who has - and you develop symptoms, you should contact NHS 111 for advice. You should not go to the doctor or to hospital, as if you have the virus, you may risk spreading it to others. The NHS is asking anybody who has recently travelled to Wuhan to self-quarantine themselves for 14 days. Latest information and advice can also be found at: • https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/wuhan-novel-coronavirus/ • https://www.gov.uk/coronavirus

ADVICE FOR PARENTS/GUARDIANS

You should not be unduly worried about the possibility of your children catching the Coronavirus. There is no reason why your children should not continue to attend their early years, school or further education setting as normal. We recognise that some families or children may be planning to travel to China during the forthcoming half term period. If so, please refer to the FCO’s latest travel advice via the link above.

BRIDGES in the Primary Phase “We build too many walls and not enough bridges. Isaac Newton BRIDGES are habits of mind or learning characteristics that develop a pupil's character and learning power and enable him/her to grow into a well-rounded individual and resilient learner. There are seven BRIDGES habits that we will be working on, which will rotate on a weekly cycle throughout the year. The BRIDGES habit of the week will always be introduced at the beginning of the week during the Monday assembly and reinforced throughout the week across the curriculum. Each class teacher will award a certificate to a pupil that they feel has demonstrated the BRIDGES focus for the week. Each week we will update you on the BRIDGES habit that will be introduced in the coming week and offer some top tips on how to reinforce the habit at home too. Please also refer to the Primary BRIDGES wheel below.

Emotional Intelligence

Emotional Intelligence comprises seven dispositions: Empathy Sociability Reflectiveness Listening Collaboration Understanding Openness At School •

At school we always remind the children to treat others in the way that they would like to be treated in return.

At school we talk about having good listening skills and that we must look at the person who is talking to us to show respect for them and that we are listening to them properly.

During every lesson the children are encouraged to develop their sociability by talking to their talk partner, when some children find this hard to do; an adult will sit and help facilitate paired talk. During the course of the year the children will be moved around and will have been encouraged to have different reading partners, maths partners etc.

We discuss the importance of working together as one big team or family at school and that we need to take care of everybody – we use the phrase ‘kind hands, kind feet’ to remind children that we do not hurt others.

When a child hurts someone or makes a poor behaviour choice, it is important that they reflect on their behaviour and if another person is involved, that they apologise to them.

Through wider reading and research the children are able to extend their understanding of the world around them, reflecting on what makes things different and what are the common thread through life.

Though reading stories the children can develop their skills of empathy through their comprehension of the characters, their motivations etc.

At Home • Having consistent boundaries between home and school is very important. • Talk to your child about the importance of not hurting or hitting other children and that we need to treat everyone kindly and respectfully. • We know that you have equally high expectations of your child at home as we at school and working in partnership has great strength in supporting your child to make good choices each day.
