Southern Entrance

We would like to remind parents and carers that the gate at the southern entrance will be locked at 08:23 each morning. Students arriving after this time should enter via the main entrance in Cricklefield Place.

Safeguarding The welfare and safety of our students is our priority. We do everything possible to ensure our students’ safety, both within the school community and outside of school, including working with relevant agencies to address any issues related to child protection. Students are informed of who they should go to should they have a concern about their own safety or the safety of others. At INA, all staff have regular safeguarding training to ensure that they are able to meet their statutory responsibilities. We also have a number of staff who are designated to respond to any child protection concerns and to liaise with social services: Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL) Leanne Abbott-Jones Assistant Principal Deputy Designated Safeguarding Lead (DDSL) Tam Broadway Primary Headteacher Sugra Alibhai Head of Sixth Form Designated Child Protection Officers Patrick Ball (Online safety) Pardeep Chaggar Jody Lapish Gareth Marshall-Jones

Mariam Mayet Amreen Patel Jag Singh David Wilson

You can find the INA Safeguarding policy, Child Protection policy and other related policies and procedures on the Academy’s website.

Dear Parents and Carers, On Tuesday, we held our exam meeting for all students about to sit GCSEs or A levels and their parents to go through the exam regulations and to share the exam timetables. It was great to see such a fantastic turnout. The PowerPoint that Mr Crowther-Green and Mr Rothnie talked through is available for you to re-read on the website: Community>Resources for Parents. It is now only six school weeks to the start of the GCSE exams. Year 11 students are focused and working very hard. Some Year 11 students may be asked to attend revision classes during the Easter holidays. We will publish further details shortly. I hope that all students will take full advantage of any additional support offered at this crucial stage. Finally, a reminder that on Tuesday Year 10 progress meetings take place from 2:30-6:30pm.

With all best wishes,

Jo Spencer Friends of Isaac Newton Academy Next meeting

Wednesday 20th March 7pm in the Secondary building All Primary and Secondary parents are welcome to attend and find out how to get involved in some fundraising events for the school.

Maths Feast On Tuesday 12th March eight Year 10 students went to compete in the “Maths Feast” which was held at Eastbury Community School in Barking and run by the Advanced Maths Support Programme (AMSP). The “Feast” was split into four rounds; starter, main, dessert and “petit four”. Each round had a particular focus and students had to work together to solve the problem which would then help them in the next round. We entered two teams into the competition: team one comprised of Waseem Dudhia, Younus Taher, Eleanor Brant and Harkirat Singh; team two was made up of Amarah Hosenee, Shama Daula, Jay Amin and Aathavan Kandeepan. As there were four rounds there were four winning teams. A big congratulations to team one who won the first round (starter) which comprised of some “merry-go-round” style questions. Both teams really enjoyed the day as the maths problems were a little different to their standard GCSE learning. They worked collaboratively and showed good resilience especially when it came to creating their own network (a little bit of A level maths!) A special shout out to Manraj Gill (Y12) for helping out on the day. Well done everyone!

Year 9 Investment Competition Update The Year 9 cohort were treated to a special assembly on Friday 8th February from special guests from Olive Tree in London, where they learned about how the stock market functions and how we can invest in companies in the FTSE 100. The Year 9 students enthusiastically got into small groups to choose stocks in four companies and measure the price of an initial “£1000” investment spread across the companies. This information was entered into a competition across five schools, which is currently running and is due to complete on March 26th. This is particularly exciting as students can really feel the effects of Brexit and how it affects the companies they have chosen to invest in. This week has seen Isaac Newton as a whole slip down the charts but another individual team has made it in to the top 10 so well done to Team Mo and Team Turbo for keeping our scores respectable! Details of individual groups are shared weekly by their maths teachers and the following summary is up to date for this week:

James Dyson

Sometimes we use every-day items, like a vacuum cleaner, without thinking too much about it. But everything around us has an interesting story with BRIDGES dispositions involved somewhere. Your vacuum cleaner may have been designed by the British inventor James Dyson. His most famous invention is the bagless vacuum cleaner. Dyson showed tremendous resilience and patience during the development of his product. Before reaching the final design, he built 5,126 prototypes. During this time, he used all of his savings and was continuously being rejected by manufacturing companies who told him it will never work. Now, Dyson vacuum cleaners are commonplace - perhaps you have one at home? His company is now worth $5.7 billion and Dyson grants awards and funding to inspire young inventors. Dyson was asked about the time it took to reach success, he replied ‘it was worth the wait’.

This is to allow enough time for marking and moderation before work is sent off to the exam board. Until the deadline, students must continue working on theory in their independent time – some of this will be set through IL tasks. INA Attendance and Punctuality Regular attendance is a crucial factor in students’ educational development and success in achieving their full potential. Missing out on education and learning leaves students vulnerable to falling behind, putting them under unnecessary pressure. At Isaac Newton Academy every student is expected to maintain 100% attendance.

Punctuality All students need to be present on site and ready for line up no later than 8.25am each day and as such we advise students to be through the school gates (side entrance and southern entrance) no later than 8.23am.

Reporting of child’s absence In line with INA attendance policy it is the parent/ carer's responsibility to phone the school by 8.15am on each day of an absence. If you fail to contact the school to inform us of your child’s absence we may take the necessary steps to ensure your child is safe. Please take the time to familiarise yourself with the INA Attendance policy.

Absences immediately before or after a school holiday If your child is absent before or after a school holiday we must see evidence for the absence. This may be medical evidence if your child is unwell, or evidence of flight delays or circumstances beyond your control. We cannot authorise any absences before or after a holiday without this evidence and you risk being issued with a penalty notice. 15 March 2019

Praise and Recognition At INA, we aim to provide a stimulating, challenging and rewarding learning environment which supports learning, celebrates achievement and encourages everyone. Awarding merits, informal praise in class and the end of term awards assemblies are all part of this. Please speak to your child/children on a regular basis to see how many merits they have and how they are working towards the different awards at school.

Merits The inter-form merit competition is heating up – with more and more merits being given out each week. Each merit you gain will increase your individual total and also your form’s overall total. So make sure you are keeping up the fantastic work to gain merits! Also if you are owed a merit go and collect it and make sure it gets recorded on your form’s spreadsheet! YEAR 7

Ahmed Al-Khafaji Award (Peer Commendation Award)

Ahmed was well known for being kind, for helping others and for being extremely polite. He was also someone known for his hard work and absorption; the idea, therefore, is that the winner should be someone who encapsulated one of these qualities in that week. Year 7: Afifa Ahmedabadi 7W Year 8: Qasim Qadir 8W Year 9: Huzaifa Mughal 9S Year 10: Atif Khan 10T Year 11: Omeir Khan 11C

Good Deed Feed Every week we ask teachers to nominate students who have been role models by carrying out good deeds for others and the INA community. A big well done for those who have been nominated this week!

Thank you to Ram Solanky in year 9 for always being so helpful to myself and all the other Pastoral Leaders. - Mr Athwal Mr Athwal, Pastoral Leader for Year 11, i/c of Praise and Recognition
