Southern Entrance
We would like to remind parents and carers that the gate at the southern entrance will be locked at 08:23 each morning. Students arriving after this time should enter via the main entrance in Cricklefield Place.
Safeguarding The welfare and safety of our students is our priority. We do everything possible to ensure our students’ safety, both within the school community and outside of school, including working with relevant agencies to address any issues related to child protection. Students are informed of who they should go to should they have a concern about their own safety or the safety of others. At INA, all staff have regular safeguarding training to ensure that they are able to meet their statutory responsibilities. We also have a number of staff who are designated to respond to any child protection concerns and to liaise with social services: Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL) Leanne Abbott-Jones Assistant Principal Deputy Designated Safeguarding Lead (DDSL) Tam Broadway Primary Headteacher Sugra Alibhai Head of Sixth Form Designated Child Protection Officers Patrick Ball (Online safety) Pardeep Chaggar Jody Lapish Gareth Marshall-Jones
Mariam Mayet Amreen Patel Jag Singh David Wilson
You can find the INA Safeguarding policy, Child Protection policy and other related policies and procedures on the Academy’s website.

Dear Parents and Carers, Ms Robson, Head of ADT, went to the Biomedia Awards last Thursday evening with some Year 7 students and their parents. The Biomedia competition gave Year 7 students the opportunity to show off their understanding of science using their creative skills. Although, on this occasion, the INA students who reached the final were not awarded any prizes, we were delighted to hear that Ms Robson was awarded the Teacher Partner Award. Congratulations to Ms Robson and all the students who were involved!
It was lovely to see so many of you at our Spring Concert on Thursday evening this week. It was a wonderful event, involving so many of our students. Many thanks to Mr Coughlin and the music team for organising a truly uplifting concert. Finally, thank you to all the parents who attended the Awards Assemblies this week to celebrate our students’ achievements. Details of the award winners can be found later in the newsletter. I hope that you enjoy a lovely Easter holiday.
With all best wishes,
Jo Spencer 5 April 2019

Stop norovirus spreading this winter Norovirus, sometimes known as the ‘winter vomiting bug’, is the most common stomach bug in the UK, affecting people of all ages. It is highly contagious and is transmitted by contact with contaminated surfaces, an infected person, or consumption of contaminated food or water. The symptoms of norovirus are very distinctive – people often report a sudden onset of nausea followed by projectile vomiting and watery diarrhoea. Good hand hygiene is important to stop the spread of the virus. People are advised to: • Wash their hands thoroughly using soap and water and drying them after using the toilet, before preparing food and eating • Not rely on alcohol gels as these do not kill the virus An infection with norovirus is self-limiting and most people will make a full recovery in 1-2 days. It is important to keep hydrated – especially children and the elderly. Do not visit either A&E or GPs with symptoms as this may spread the virus. Further information and advice is available from NHS 111, including an online symptom checker at nhs.uk. Gateway Number: 2013189

1 April 2019 Dear Parents/Carers, I want to update you on our efforts to find a successor to Rachel Macfarlane as Principal at INA. We’ve had two goals in mind during the search process: to find a person with the leadership qualities and experience necessary to ensure that INA would not only maintain its high standards but continue to set new records for achievement; and to keep disruption to the school to a minimum. I am happy to report progress in this effort. I hope you will agree that the steps described below ensure that INA continues to be a vital learning community for students, teachers and staff alike: First, Jo Spencer, who had been due to retire this spring, has agreed to return next year as Interim Principal. Second, we will be appointing Jane Witheford as Executive Principal, beginning in September. Jane is a superb school leader. She joins us from an outstanding school, Ark John Keats, where she will also serve as Executive Principal. Third, we will continue the search for the permanent Principal position next year – and expect that the opportunity to work with Ms. Witheford at INA will be highly attractive to talented, up-and-coming school leaders. This plan would not have been possible without Ms. Spencer’s willingness to defer her retirement by a year, nor would it have been achievable without the considerable help of Ark Schools. I hope you will join me in thanking Ms. Spencer for her exceptional commitment to INA, in welcoming Ms. Witheford, and in looking forward to the exciting next chapter for INA. Very truly yours, Gerard Griffin Chair of the Isaac Newton Academy Board of Governors

YEAR 11 NEWS Revision Resources Departments have produced a wide array of revision materials for students to use independently outside of lessons and over the Easter holiday. They are available in hard copy and on Fronter.
Maths All students have received the document printed later in the newsletter outlining the resources available and the expectations of students over the holiday. This will also be posted on Fronter. Students will take away with them exam papers for Easter IL and they should also have a bank of exam papers from the lessons since January (all on Fronter).
English English is setting a practice question/paper for all elements of Literature and Language because students need to do more exam practice outside of lessons in order to improve their grades. Teachers will check completion and mark them after Easter. These are all going out in hard copy and will also be available on Fronter.
Science All students have received the documents for each science they study (hard copies). These contain the revision programme for each Science and a guide to where resources are on Fronter. We have been regularly adding resources to Fronter and guiding students to what is there and where to find them.
Drama Drama students have been given a hard copy of a 74 page revision booklet. It can also be found on Fronter.
History
• All students will be given in-house copies of revision guides. • Topics on the exams are as follows: • Paper 1: Medicine Through Time 1250-present and Medicine on the Western Front, 1914-1918; • Paper 2: Superpowers and Cold War 1945-1991 and Early Elizabethan England 1558-1588, Paper 3: The USA: Conflict at Home and Abroad 195401975 - Civil Rights and Vietnam.

• They can use purple revision guides from Edexcel (most already have these) – can borrow from G19 for use in school. • Edmodo - class teachers provide exam questions/quizzes for students regularly. • Target 5/ 9 books are being used as IL for students also.
Geography Year 11s have been given a hard copy of the revision booklets for Paper 1 and 2 with lots of practice questions. A copy is also available on Edmodo where students can access coloured resources like maps, graphs etc. In addition to this they have been doing some practice papers in lessons which they can look over and improve their answers. Most students have been given access to a digital textbook (was given before mock exams) which has a range of questions at the end of each lesson (if they don’t have access details and would like to request, they can see Ms Gurm). On Edmodo, students can also send some practice questions/answers to their teachers if they would like these marked or if they would like to ask or clarify any questions. These are also now on fronter, although many Year 11s use Edmodo rather than fronter.
RE

Message from the maths team for all Year 11 students
Login: isaac Password: success
Login e.g. Joe Bloggs : Jbloggs@ina Password: newton
All Year 11 students should be aware of the resources they can use to revise for their maths GCSE. Below is a checklist of things they should be doing over the Easter period. 1. Completing the booster pack tasks on MyMaths . All students should know their log-in details. • 11Alk, Ban, Eul complete booster packs for grades 6, 7, 8 & 9 (should complete 5 if needed) • 11Can and Fer complete booster packs for grades 4, 5, 6, 7 (should complete 3 if needed) • 11Dri and Gor complete booster packs for grades 3, 4, 5
2. All students to complete Practice Paper 6 (A5 booklet containing 3 papers). The expectation is for all students to complete and hand in first lesson back so that their teacher can collect check and mark. From this, a paper analysis will be completed which will give all students the topics they are strong at and those that require more practise. Students should then be using resources (mathswatch, mymaths etc) to revise over these areas to close their knowledge gap. 3. Students should complete the problem solving packs located on Fronter on the Year11 page under the “general revision resources” table. These packs are divided into units that are the same as the book and contain thought provoking questions within that unit e.g. unit 12H are problem solving questions to unit 12 in the higher book. Please note: If your Mathswatch doesn’t log in and the first letter and surname are common for example Daniel Malik then your username may be DMalik1@ina.
Final message from the maths team; the best way to revise maths…is to do maths. 5 April 2019

GCSE Examinations Contingency Day
The Joint Council for Qualifications (JCQ) have announced a contingency date of the 26th of June 2019. A contingency date is a day specifically set aside “in the event of widespread, sustained national or local disruption to examinations during the June 2019 examination series. This decision comes following the tragic events of last summer, in particular the Manchester attack and the Grenfell Tower fire. It may be necessary to postpone an exam in the event of such an incident to allow all students a fair and equal chance. This means that all candidates taking GCSE or A Level exams must be available to sit exams from the date of their first exam until the 26th June 2019. We understand that once your exams are over you will probably want to celebrate, but in light of this new rule please do
not organise a holiday or plan to be any distance from school until after the 26th June. This decision is not one that has been taken by INA, it has been imposed on all schools by JCQ and does apply to all candidates in all schools in the UK. Mr Crowther-Green, Assistant Principal 5 April 2019

INA Attendance and Punctuality Regular attendance is a crucial factor in students’ educational development and success in achieving their full potential. Missing out on education and learning leaves students vulnerable to falling behind, putting them under unnecessary pressure. At Isaac Newton Academy every student is expected to maintain 100% attendance.
Punctuality All students need to be present on site and ready for line up no later than 8.25am each day and as such we advise students to be through the school gates (side entrance and southern entrance) no later than 8.23am.
Reporting of child’s absence In line with INA attendance policy it is the parent/ carer's responsibility to phone the school by 8.15am on each day of an absence. If you fail to contact the school to inform us of your child’s absence we may take the necessary steps to ensure your child is safe. Please take the time to familiarise yourself with the INA Attendance policy.

Absences immediately before or after a school holiday If your child is absent before or after a school holiday we must see evidence for the absence. This may be medical evidence if your child is unwell, or evidence of flight delays or circumstances beyond your control. We cannot authorise any absences before or after a holiday without this evidence and you risk being issued with a penalty notice.

A day out at the seaside... Year 10 students went to investigate coastal areas in Walton-on-the-Naze on 22nd and 25th March. Students collected primary data to find out the impacts of coastal management on coastal processes and communities. Students worked in groups to collect the necessary data by using the equipment like ranging poles and clinometers with accuracy and following the health and safety guidelines. Some students were able to link the investigation with science as well. They brought a sample of water from the sea and will use the pH value to check the acidity of the sea-water. They have been working really hard to compile the data they collected by critically reflecting on their practice.

Hola, amigos The MFL department is excited to report that last week as part of our brand-new Spanish exchange with La Fundación Ribera in Banyeres de Mariola Alicante 13 Spanish students and two of their teachers spent three days at INA. In the morning our visitors shadowed either a year 9 or 10 student whilst their teachers got to know the MFL department, Maths and Music! Lunch was eaten together in the lunch hall where students and their teachers alike experienced the tradition of family dining. The buzz created around the school was echoed by the Spanish being spoken by both INA student and teachers. The visit culminated in another INA tradition with a Spanish Harkness led by Awais Seyyard and Rawdah Hosenee from Year 13 Many thanks to all staff and students who assisted in making the trip a success. We can’t wait for the return leg in May! ¡Hasta Luego! Ms Coates, 2i/c MFL
