Southern Entrance
We would like to remind parents and carers that the gate at the southern entrance will be locked at 08:23 each morning. Students arriving after this time should enter via the main entrance in Cricklefield Place.
Safeguarding The welfare and safety of our students is our priority. We do everything possible to ensure our students’ safety, both within the school community and outside of school, including working with relevant agencies to address any issues related to child protection. Students are informed of who they should go to should they have a concern about their own safety or the safety of others. At INA, all staff have regular safeguarding training to ensure that they are able to meet their statutory responsibilities. We also have a number of staff who are designated to respond to any child protection concerns and to liaise with social services: Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL) Leanne Abbott-Jones Assistant Principal Deputy Designated Safeguarding Lead (DDSL) Tam Broadway Primary Headteacher Sugra Alibhai Head of Sixth Form Designated Child Protection Officers Patrick Ball (Online safety) Pardeep Chaggar Jody Lapish Gareth Marshall-Jones
Mariam Mayet Amreen Patel Jag Singh David Wilson
You can find the INA Safeguarding policy, Child Protection policy and other related policies and procedures on the Academy’s website.

Dear Parents and Carers, We have welcomed many educationalists from around the globe this year who have asked to see INA in action and talk to our staff and students about our ethos, curriculum, and teaching and learning. Last week, we hosted senior leaders from a school in Australia who were keen to understand how we develop learning power and character at INA as they are starting to develop a similar programme in their school. On Wednesday, we welcomed 28 school Principals from Spain to look at our BRIDGES programme in both primary and secondary as part of their UK study tour. Each time we have visitors, they comment on how articulate and confident our students are (both primary and secondary) and that has to be in part due to their engagement with the BRIDGES programme. On the flip side, we always learn something from our visitors and we get to reflect on how we can improve further. I’d like to say a huge thank you to Mr Ball and Ms Broadway for organising and hosting the visitors. Speaking of BRIDGES, we held our second BRIDGES mentoring session of the year on Wednesday and we were very impressed with the students’ level of preparation and their ability to reflect upon their learning dispositions and character development. School will be closed for the Bank Holiday on Monday, leaving only nine school days until the start of the GCSE exams. I hope that Year 11 students will use the extended weekend to concentrate on exam preparation. There is a vast amount of revision materials and question papers available on Fronter that students can access to support their revision.
With all best wishes,

Our ref: HPzone 1666919 Date 25/04/2019 Dear Parent or Guardian, I am writing to inform you that two children attending Isaac Newton Academy have been diagnosed with probable whooping cough. Although your child may have been in contact with the cases, there is no need to exclude your child from school if they are well. Whooping cough is a bacterial infection which causes coughing that may be followed by a whoop or vomiting. The coughing can last for a few months, but the child is not infectious to others after 48 hours of treatment with antibiotics or, if untreated, 21 days after the start of the illness. This letter is to advise you that virtually all children who have been fully immunised against whooping cough should be protected against this disease, and there is no increased risk to them or their families. Children should receive 3 doses of whooping cough vaccine between 2-4 months of age and then receive a further immunisation in their pre-school boosters. If your child has received all these immunisations, then you need to take no further action. If your child has not been immunised against whooping cough, or if you are unsure, then please take your child to see your GP who will arrange immunisation, if this is appropriate. You may have been advised in the past that your child should not receive immunisation against whooping cough, but this advice may no longer apply. No other member of your family is at increased risk of the disease and they do not need to see their GP. If you have any worries about this you can speak to a member of the Health Protection team on 020 3326 1658. More information can be found in the attached factsheet as well as the following website at NHS Choices: http://www.nhs.uk/conditions/whooping-cough/pages/introduction.aspx Yours sincerely, Alix Johnson Health Protection Pracitioner

Ramadan and Summer Exams We are aware that the public GCSE exams fall during Ramadan this year as they did last year. Subsequent year groups’ GCSE exams will also be affected. Some of the INA internal summer exam season will also fall during Ramadan. We appreciate the benefits that observing Ramadan brings to individuals and communities and the obligation to fast under Islamic tradition when a child becomes an adult. We understand that the decision to fast is very personal. We are also aware that observing the fast and late-night prayers may lead to tiredness, low energy, dehydration, reduced focus, memory or concentration. Islamic law does offer the flexibility for a person to delay or exempt themselves from fasting and late-night prayers if they believe their performance in exams could be affected. We would advise students that it is important not to spend all night praying during the exam period to avoid tiredness. If your son/daughter will be fasting during this period, you will need to write a letter to confirm it. Please write a letter explaining this and ask your son/ daughter to hand it in at the Student Reception by Wednesday 1st May. This letter should be headed for the attention of Ms Chamberlain. This allows the school to have an accurate picture of numbers in order to prepare food in appropriate quantities. Your son/daughter will be excused from lunch and will not be expected to go to the dining hall during Ramadan. Your Wisepay account will not be charged for school lunches if we receive written confirmation that your child is fasting. Our Prayer and Contemplation rooms are available during lunchtime for students who wish to pray. Please note that, during Ramadan, students are expected to participate fully in all lessons and enrichment activities as normal, including PE. Mr Ball, Acting Assistant Principal 3 May 2019

Raheem Sterling Taking people on. Setting up goals for his teammates. Scoring. This is what we have come to expect from Raheem Sterling. Regardless of whether he is playing for Man City or England, Sterling has been simply incredible this season. However, many would argue his largest achievement has been how he has raised awareness about racism in sport. Unfortunately, around the world and in the UK black footballers can receive racist abuse from fans. In addition to this, some people argue that newspapers report differently depending on the race of the footballer. Through his sense of justice and fairness, Sterling has used his Instagram posts and other interviews to condemn discrimination and point out culprits. In doing this he educates people and tries to change people’s mindset. “It’s 2019 now ... we can only bring awareness and light to the situation,” Sterling said. Be a leader, stand up for justice and fairness; we can all make a difference. What can you do?

Moumita and Amani demonstrate both justice and fairness in Harkness lessons. YEAR 11 NEWS Revision Resources Departments have produced a wide array of revision materials for students to use independently outside of lessons and over the Easter holiday. They are available in hard copy and on Fronter.
Maths All students have received the document printed later in the newsletter outlining the resources available and the expectations of students over the holiday. This will also be posted on Fronter. Students will take away with them exam papers for Easter IL and they should also have a bank of exam papers from the lessons since January (all on Fronter).
English English is setting a practice question/paper for all elements of Literature and Language because students need to do more exam practice outside of lessons in order to improve their grades. Teachers will check completion and mark them after Easter. These are all going out in hard copy and will also be available on Fronter.
Science All students have received the documents for each science they study (hard copies). These contain the revision programme for each Science and a guide to where resources are on Fronter. We have been regularly adding resources to Fronter and guiding students to what is there and where to find them.
Drama Drama students have been given a hard copy of a 74 page revision booklet. It can also be found on Fronter.
History
• All students will be given in-house copies of revision guides. • Topics on the exams are as follows: • Paper 1: Medicine Through Time 1250-present and Medicine on the Western Front, 1914-1918; • Paper 2: Superpowers and Cold War 1945-1991 and Early Elizabethan England 1558-1588, Paper 3: The USA: Conflict at Home and Abroad 1954-1975 - Civil Rights and Vietnam.

Geography Year 11s have been given a hard copy of the revision booklets for Paper 1 and 2 with lots of practice questions. A copy is also available on Edmodo where students can access coloured resources like maps, graphs etc. In addition to this they have been doing some practice papers in lessons which they can look over and improve their answers. Most students have been given access to a digital textbook (was given before mock exams) which has a range of questions at the end of each lesson (if they don’t have access details and would like to request, they can see Ms Gurm). On Edmodo, students can also send some practice questions/answers to their teachers if they would like these marked or if they would like to ask or clarify any questions. These are also now on fronter, although many Year 11s use Edmodo rather than fronter.

Message from the maths team for all Year 11 students
Login: isaac Password: success
Login e.g. Joe Bloggs : Jbloggs@ina Password: newton
All Year 11 students should be aware of the resources they can use to revise for their maths GCSE. Below is a checklist of things they should be doing over the Easter period. 1. Completing the booster pack tasks on MyMaths . All students should know their log-in details. • 11Alk, Ban, Eul complete booster packs for grades 6, 7, 8 & 9 (should complete 5 if needed) • 11Can and Fer complete booster packs for grades 4, 5, 6, 7 (should complete 3 if needed) • 11Dri and Gor complete booster packs for grades 3, 4, 5
2. All students to complete Practice Paper 6 (A5 booklet containing 3 papers). The expectation is for all students to complete and hand in first lesson back so that their teacher can collect check and mark. From this, a paper analysis will be completed which will give all students the topics they are strong at and those that require more practise. Students should then be using resources (mathswatch, mymaths etc) to revise over these areas to close their knowledge gap. 3. Students should complete the problem solving packs located on Fronter on the Year11 page under the “general revision resources” table. These packs are divided into units that are the same as the book and contain thought provoking questions within that unit e.g. unit 12H are problem solving questions to unit 12 in the higher book. Please note: If your Mathswatch doesn’t log in and the first letter and surname are common for example Daniel Malik then your username may be DMalik1@ina.
Final message from the maths team; the best way to revise maths…is to do maths. 3 May 2019

GCSE Examinations Contingency Day
The Joint Council for Qualifications (JCQ) have announced a contingency date of the 26th of June 2019. A contingency date is a day specifically set aside “in the event of widespread, sustained national or local disruption to examinations during the June 2019 examination series. This decision comes following the tragic events of last summer, in particular the Manchester attack and the Grenfell Tower fire. It may be necessary to postpone an exam in the event of such an incident to allow all students a fair and equal chance. This means that all candidates taking GCSE or A Level exams must be available to sit exams from the date of their first exam until the 26th June 2019. We understand that once your exams are over you will probably want to celebrate, but in light of this new rule please do
not organise a holiday or plan to be any distance from school until after the 26th June. This decision is not one that has been taken by INA, it has been imposed on all schools by JCQ and does apply to all candidates in all schools in the UK. Mr Crowther-Green, Assistant Principal

INA Attendance and Punctuality Regular attendance is a crucial factor in students’ educational development and success in achieving their full potential. Missing out on education and learning leaves students vulnerable to falling behind, putting them under unnecessary pressure. At Isaac Newton Academy every student is expected to maintain 100% attendance.
Punctuality All students need to be present on site and ready for line up no later than 8.25am each day and as such we advise students to be through the school gates (side entrance and southern entrance) no later than 8.23am.
Reporting of child’s absence In line with INA attendance policy it is the parent/ carer's responsibility to phone the school by 8.15am on each day of an absence. If you fail to contact the school to inform us of your child’s absence we may take the necessary steps to ensure your child is safe. Please take the time to familiarise yourself with the INA Attendance policy.

Absences immediately before or after a school holiday If your child is absent before or after a school holiday we must see evidence for the absence. This may be medical evidence if your child is unwell, or evidence of flight delays or circumstances beyond your control. We cannot authorise any absences before or after a holiday without this evidence and you risk being issued with a penalty notice.
