Southern Entrance
We would like to remind parents and carers that the gate at the southern entrance will be locked at 08:23 each morning. Students arriving after this time should enter via the main entrance in Cricklefield Place.
Safeguarding The welfare and safety of our students is our priority. We do everything possible to ensure our students’ safety, both within the school community and outside of school, including working with relevant agencies to address any issues related to child protection. Students are informed of who they should go to should they have a concern about their own safety or the safety of others. At INA, all staff have regular safeguarding training to ensure that they are able to meet their statutory responsibilities. Dear Parents and Carers, With the GCSE exam now well underway, we are very impressed with the way that Year 11students are approaching their exams. This is where students need to draw heavily on their BRIDGES dispositions, using the skills of resilience and determination to tackle the most testing of questions and staying optimistic and focused during the forthcoming weeks. We are confident that they will be able to demonstrate these important qualities. On wednesday, we held our Art Exhibition. The GCSE art work produced by Year 11 was fantastic, as can be seen from the photo on the front cover. Our work experience evening for Year 10 students and their parents takes place on Tuesday next week from 5.30-6.30pm. This is an important meeting in which Mr Crowther-Green will be sharing information about Year 10’s work experience which takes place in the week beginning 1st July. On Wednesday we will be welcoming Year 6 pupils who will be starting at INA in September and their parents for our Year 6 Information Evening. There were over seven applications for every place in Year 7 this year and we are looking forward to meeting all of the successful children and their parents.

Last term, the Humanities departments took 180 year 7 students to the medieval town Rochester, which is more than 800 years old. This was a chance for students to visit one of the best-known Norman cities in England. The annual trip, which now in its seventh year, seems like a rite of passage for INA students. It has given students the opportunity to discover the magnificent cathedral and dominating castle up close. Students were able to walk in the footsteps of religious pilgrims and were able to explore the ruins of the castle & castle grounds. Thank you to all the staff and parents for their support in making this a great trip for the students.
Student reviews I enjoyed the trip to Rochester as we got to explore many places I have not seen before. Despite not going into the castle, I listened very carefully to Mr Smith’s intriguing story about the castle. When we arrived into the sweet shop, the variety of smells wafted in the air. I do hope we go on another Humanities trip! – Hannah Chaudhury 7N The Rochester trip was very exciting and fun. Everyone enjoyed it. It was interesting looking at the castle and cathedral. I really enjoyed visiting the cathedral the most. I enjoyed learning about the different parts to the cathedral. I also really liked the highway. It was more better than the highway in Ilford. There were no cars, a lot of charity shops and book shops. It was very clean and peaceful. – Hassan Mughal 7S The thing I enjoyed when I went to the Rochester trip was when we were learning about how William the conqueror built the motte and bailey castle and was in control of the country very well. I also enjoyed completing the booklet received from the humanities team and the geography activity where we were counting the number of people entering the shops per minute for the pedestrian count. – Khashaia 7C

During the Second World War her family were forced to hide from the Nazis in cramped conditions. During this time Anne kept a diary of her experiences and thoughts. After the war this diary was discovered by her father who decided to publish it. Anne Frank’s diary has become one of the most famous records of the Holocaust, providing a human story behind the dreadful statistics. What is truly incredible is that despite the unthinkable hardship and trauma, Anne still maintained her optimism and a positive view of humanity:

YEAR 11 NEWS Year 11 and 13 Study Leave – Summer 2019 The exam season starts on Monday 13th May and ends on Wednesday 19th June.
Half term is 27th - 31st May Normal lessons for all students will continue until and including Friday 10th May. From Monday 13th May til Friday 24th May all Year 11 students will be in school all day and expected to attend their normal lessons if they are not in a GCSE exam. This will include pm lessons where they have an am exam, am lessons where they have a pm exam and lessons between am and pm exams, where applicable.
Morning exams GCSE Each am exam session will start at 8am. A 30 minute revision session (usually based in the dining hall) will occur from 8-8:30. At 8.30am a free breakfast will be provided for all Year 11 students taking the GCSE that morning.
A Level Each am exam session will start at 8am. A 30 minute revision session (usually based in the KS4 hall) will occur from 8-8:30. At 8.30am a free breakfast will be provided for all Year 11 students taking the GCSE that morning.
Afternoon exams GCSE Each pm exam session will start at 1pm (following KS4 lunch). A 30 minute revision session (The venue is dependent on the size of the cohort and Hods will advise. Hods who wish to use the sports hall are to liaise directly with DB) will occur from 1-1:30.
A Level Each pm exam session will start at 1pm (Students may choose to use the Y12 lunch slot or make other provisions). If a student has a lesson between an am and pm exam, he/she should go to the lesson but the teacher will allow him/her to study for his/her pm exam rather than take part in the lesson.

Teachers will continue with their Year 11/13 lessons right up until the final exam for that subject has been taken. Once the final exam has taken place, the student coming to the lesson will be allowed to get on with independent study for upcoming exams. The teacher will supervise and ensure that there is an atmosphere conducive to private study. From Monday 20th May, there will be study leave for Year 13 students. From Monday 3rd June, there will be study leave for Year 11 students. There will be a programme of revision lessons offered in the subjects where exams have not finished. Students will be expected to attend revision sessions that apply to them (although for some students who are good at revising independently these sessions will be optional and for others an invite will be issued and they will be required to attend.) There will be signing up arrangements so that staff know who they are expecting in advance of the session. Students will sign in and out at reception. At times when they do not have a revision lesson or an exam Y11 students will be expected to leave site to go home to revise, Year 13 students may choose to use the Sixth Form Study Centre following the procedures outlined by Ms Patel. GCSE Examinations Contingency Day
The Joint Council for Qualifications (JCQ) have announced a contingency date of the 26th of June 2019. A contingency date is a day specifically set aside “in the event of widespread, sustained national or local disruption to examinations during the June 2019 examination series�. This decision comes following the tragic events of last summer, in particular the Manchester attack and the Grenfell Tower fire. It may be necessary to postpone an exam in the event of such an incident to allow all students a fair and equal chance. This means that all candidates taking GCSE or A Level exams must be available to sit exams from the date of their first exam until the 26th June 2019. We understand that once your exams are over you will probably want to celebrate, but in light of this new rule please do
not organise a holiday or plan to be any distance from school until after the 26th June. This decision is not one that has been taken by INA, it has been imposed on all schools by JCQ and does apply to all candidates in all schools in the UK. Mr Crowther-Green, Assistant Principal

Message from the maths team for all Year 11 students

All Year 11 students should be aware of the resources they can use to revise for their maths GCSE. Below is a checklist of things they should be doing over the Easter period. 1. Completing the booster pack tasks on MyMaths . All students should know their log-in details. • 11Alk, Ban, Eul complete booster packs for grades 6, 7, 8 & 9 (should complete 5 if needed) • 11Can and Fer complete booster packs for grades 4, 5, 6, 7 (should complete 3 if needed) • 11Dri and Gor complete booster packs for grades 3, 4, 5
2. All students to complete Practice Paper 6 (A5 booklet containing 3 papers). The expectation is for all students to complete and hand in first lesson back so that their teacher can collect check and mark. From this, a paper analysis will be completed which will give all students the topics they are strong at and those that require more practise. Students should then be using resources (mathswatch, mymaths etc) to revise over these areas to close their knowledge gap. 3. Students should complete the problem solving packs located on Fronter on the Year11 page under the “general revision resources” table. These packs are divided into units that are the same as the book and contain thought provoking questions within that unit e.g. unit 12H are problem solving questions to unit 12 in the higher book. Year 10 Computer Science NEA Year 10 Computer Science GCSE students have started their Non-Examined Assessment (NEA) programming project (controlled assessment). This is a core part of their GCSE that will be completed in class-time over 20 hours that will finish near the end of June. The students have been given a task sheet with questions on it that they must complete that must remain in school. They are not permitted to complete the actual assessment at home, but can do research for it in preparation for completing it in class. Although the NEA does not count towards their grade, the skills that they will develop and practice during it are vital for success in written Paper 1 (worth 50% of their overall GCSE grade) and is a great opportunity to develop their programming skills through solving a real-life problem. Students must also demonstrate to the exam board (AQA) that they have shown 20 hours' worth of work and the NEA is treated like an exam. Alongside preparation for the NEA, students must also be preparing for their End of Year written exams (14th June and 20th June) using their revision guide. Revising for Exams: Tips to Help You Get it Right
With exam season looming, every student in the land is looking for a magic bullet to help them get through their exams unscathed. Sadly there is no magic to be had here other than hard work, but there are a few strategies you can employ to ensure that the time you spend revising is spent as well as possible.
Think carefully about how to prioritise time When planning your revision timetables, you should think carefully about how your time would be best spent. This will vary from person to person but a few key questions you can ask yourself to help you prioritise are: • What’s next? What will you do after these exams and are some subjects more important than others? If, for example, a college or university offer is dependent on reaching a particular grade in a specific subject then you must ensure you’re confident about attaining that grade. • Where can you make the biggest gains? You only have a finite number of hours, how do • you think these would best be spent? • What order should you tackle your revision in, in order to be at your peak for each exam on exam day?
Tackle the tough stuff The amount of effort it takes to get from fail to pass is often far less than the amount of effort it takes to get from pass to outstanding, so it makes sense to ensure you are relatively competent across the board before you spend many hours perfecting your knowledge in subjects you’re already stronger in. It can be tempting to work on subjects you’re already good at but this is often a less good investment of your time than working on a subject you’re weaker in.
Revisit and revise revision timetables Once you’ve written your revision timetable, expect to revisit and change it. This is not a document that’s set in stone and you’re unlikely to completely stick to it. As you gain a better understanding about what can be achieved within your revision slots, revisit your 17 May 2019

timetable and tweak it. Otherwise, you can risk getting further and further behind and find yourself in the classic situation of having prepared very much better for the first few exams than the last few.
Practice under exam conditions The more you can practice under exam conditions, the better prepared you’ll be for the day itself. Set yourself timed activities without access to your books – just like the real thing. You’ll very rapidly get an understanding about what you don’t know and you’ll get used to how quickly you can work and how best to manage your time. Often, this can give you a bit of a confidence boost too as you’ll realise you know more than you think you do. Your teachers will be able to give you past exam papers or sample questions to work from and many will be happy to mark them and provide feedback too if you want them too.
Understand the mark scheme As well as asking your teacher to mark your work, have a go yourself or work with friends to mark each others’ work. Really understanding the mark scheme, especially in the context of your own practice papers can give you a really clear steer on how best to spend your time in exams in order to gain as many marks as possible.
Learn from each other You have to be confident in your knowledge about something in order to teach someone else about it, so teaching your friends can be great revision in itself. Additionally, having our friends explain concepts we’re struggling with, can often help to improve our understanding as they may have developed a slightly different way of explaining it than our teacher or text books or have found ways to overcome similar barriers to understanding.
Know where to find help Identify sources of both emotional and academic support. Some of these will be face to face via your teachers, friends or family. Others will be online. There is some great support available and it’s a good idea to know where to find it and how to access it before you need it rather than when you reach breaking point.
Create a great space for learning It’s hard to learn in a space that’s noisy or cluttered so it’s worth taking a bit of time to get your working space organised. Make sure you have a space to work in that is comfortable and free from distraction and that you have everything you need to hand. If you get in the habit of working in the same place, or places, then you’ll soon find that your brain kicks into gear the moment you sit downto work as your body recognises this as your revision space. Take proper breaks Many students fail to realise the importance of breaks when revising. Proper breaks are important and we’ll often find that we are suddenly able to understanding a difficult concept better when we’ve taken a bit of time out and we revisit it afresh. We need to find a careful balance between revision and rest, but all revision and no rest will often result in burnout before exams.
Eat and sleep well Again, many students are tempted to forfeit sleep for revision, this is rarely a good strategy. You can work better and more quickly when you’ve had enough sleep. Depriving yourself of sleep is not sustainable. It can work well to have set working hours and set sleeping hours (and set downtime hours). This removes the guilt sometimes associated with not working and will help to ensure that you look after your body and brain by getting enough sleep. We often eat a lot less well in the run up to exams as well as we forfeit mealtimes for revision. But snacking can never replace meals and the time we take to sit down and eat a healthier meal is often a good chance for our brain to relax a little. If you are going to snack, try to have nutritious snacks on hand rather than crisps and chocolate.
Get active Physical exercise is another thing that tends to fall by the wayside as we enter exam season with team sports and gym sessions make way for revision. It may be that you need to do less sport than before if you were heavily involved, but you’ll find that doing a little sport and exercise is a great break from your revision and helps to keep both your mind and body sharp. It can also be a great way to deal with the difficult emotions and frustrations sometimes brought about during revision which is far healthier than letting them stew whilst you continue revising. Even small amounts of fresh air and exercise can make a big difference when you’re stagnating at your desk. Small targets, like going for a short walk or getting ten minutes of fresh air a day can help you to feel better overall.
Compare yourself only to yourself You’re revising so that you can be the best you can be. Do chart your progress and set realistic goals and targets for yourself, but don’t spend your whole time comparing yourself and your revision with your friends’. This can be tempting but usually makes you more aware of what you don’t know and what’s not going well rather than the progress you have made and what you have achieved. Watching yourself progress and walking into your exams knowing that you’ve tried hard can be really satisfying. You may have done twice as much or half as much work as a friend and you may be expecting better or worse grades, but the key thing is that you’ve done what works for you.

It’s never too late to start The final piece of advice here goes out to all those students who have given up before they’ve started. Who are joining the revision party too late or who realise that they’ve neglected some subjects in favour of others and feel unprepared. It’s never too late. There’s always something you can do to ensure you are better prepared for your exams. If you feel you’ve left things too late and don’t have enough time just be honest withyourself about how much time you actually have and which areas are most worth focusing on. Forget all the stuff you’re already okay at and think instead about how you can change some fails to passes. It sounds like a mountain to climb but if you’re really motivated, you can make a surprising amount of progress in a short amount of time. Good luck and never forget that you’re not in this alone. Seek help and support from your teachers, your friends and your parents. Any time it all feels a bit too hard, just pause fora moment to picture the moment when you walk out of your final exam. It will feel GOOD!

INA Attendance and Punctuality Regular attendance is a crucial factor in students’ educational development and success in achieving their full potential. Missing out on education and learning leaves students vulnerable to falling behind, putting them under unnecessary pressure. At Isaac Newton Academy every student is expected to maintain 100% attendance.
Punctuality All students need to be present on site and ready for line up no later than 8.25am each day and as such we advise students to be through the school gates (side entrance and southern entrance) no later than 8.23am.
Reporting of child’s absence In line with INA attendance policy it is the parent/ carer's responsibility to phone the school by 8.15am on each day of an absence. If you fail to contact the school to inform us of your child’s absence we may take the necessary steps to ensure your child is safe. INA Goes Greener! Inspired by the work of the Eco-Ambassadors in the Primary School, who the Secondary Student Council Steering Group visited at the end of the Spring Term, Secondary students are now preparing to play their part in helping make INA a cleaner, greener and more environmentally-friendly place to study and relax. Our aim, as part of a whole school project, is to improve the natural environment of the school by developing our outdoor spaces through planting flowers, shrubs and trees around the Secondary school campus. Every Year Group from Years 7-10 will be playing their part in the Summer Term, with a different focus for each Year Group: • Year 7 will be focusing on planting and gardening around campus • Year 8 will be helping to develop an outdoor classroom • Year 9 will be developing a bird and bee-friendly school • Year 10 will be focusing on developing a seed bank and plant nursery. Every Thursday this term Mr Barber is running Gardening Club from 4-5pm for students interested in helping out with the project and already we have planted some plants, shrubs and trees around campus, but plan to plant much more over the next two months. We have designated May 20th-24th as Gardening Week here at Secondary – all forms in Years 7-10 will be planting seeds for an inter-form gardening competition, and we are looking for donations to help build the school’s resources to make gardening and improving the school’s environment a permanent focus for the school.
Calling All Parents and Carers! Do you have any spare gardening equipment or seeds? We are looking for donations of seeds, pots, gardening gloves, trowels, gardening forks, spades, watering cans, bamboo canes or any other gardening equipment that you may have spare at home or laying unused in your garden shed.
