Southern Entrance
We would like to remind parents and carers that the gate at the southern entrance will be locked at 08:23 each morning. Students arriving after this time should enter via the main entrance in Cricklefield Place.
Safeguarding The welfare and safety of our students is our priority. We do everything possible to ensure our students’ safety, both within the school community and outside of school, including working with relevant agencies to address any issues related to child protection. Students are informed of who they should go to should they have a concern about their own safety or the safety of others. At INA, all staff have regular safeguarding training to ensure that they are able to meet their statutory responsibilities. We also have a number of staff who are designated to respond to any child protection concerns and to liaise with social services: Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL) Leanne Abbott-Jones Assistant Principal Deputy Designated Safeguarding Lead (DDSL) Tam Broadway Primary Headteacher Sugra Alibhai Head of Sixth Form Designated Child Protection Officers Patrick Ball (Online safety) Pardeep Chaggar Jody Lapish Gareth Marshall-Jones

Dear Parents and Carers, On Saturday we held our Summer Fayre. It was an absolutely brilliant day, with hundreds of families coming to spend the afternoon browsing the many and varied stalls, tasting the fabulous food, listening to the students performing music and engaging in lots of fun activities. This day took a huge amount of organisation and hard work. I am indebted to Ms Broadway, Head of Primary, who led on the event and whose passion for working with parents and the school community shone through during the lead up to the fayre and on the day. I would also like to extend my deep gratitude to the members of FOINA (Friends of INA) who worked tirelessly to organise and run the event; their energy and community spirit has been inspiring! To all the parents and local businesses who contributed gifts, raffle prizes and food – many thanks. Many thanks also to all of the staff and students from primary, secondary and sixth form who ran activities and stalls on the day or just came along to help. And finally, thank you to all for coming along and being part of this great community event. I’m delighted to say that, apart from bringing the community together, the summer fayre raised over £6000 for the school! On Wednesday last week our choir was invited to perform at a Gala Charity Concert at St. John’s Smith Square, Westminster. It was a fantastic opportunity for our students to present their hard work to a larger audience outside the school and gain a real-life experience as performers. The INA choir was the only British choir to perform at the event, along with two American Choirs, which was a great privilege and honour. I would like to thank Ms Zembron for organising the event and providing such an incredible opportunity for our choir. Finally, I need to inform you that an IT refresh will be taking place over the summer holidays. There will be no IT in the school from the 26th July until 9th August. The website will be unaffected by this.
With all best wishes,
Jo Spencer

At the assemblies we will be presenting awards in recognition of students’ academic progress and attainment, personal progress and the development of their BRIDGES dispositions. Excellent attendance and punctuality will also be celebrated. We believe that it is important that every student is represented by a parent at the Awards assembly for their year group. Tickets will be distributed in the lead up to the awards assemblies. Due to limited capacity, we are unable to accommodate very many additional family members. However, if you would like additional places, please notify the school office and we will do our best to allocate an additional ticket. I look forward to seeing you during these special celebrations. Summer Independent Learning
Students in Years 7-10 have been receiving feedback on their summer exams. It is vitally important it is that students in Years 7 to 10 use the feedback they have received from teachers on their recent exams to gain a clear understanding of the gaps in their knowledge and the questions/ question types that they find the most challenging. From this, students will gain a clear picture of the topic areas they most need to revise and work on further. We highly recommend that students devise an independent study/revision programme over the summer and that they space out their learning, rather than rushing it at the end of the holidays. They will consolidate their learning from this year, delve deeper into some topics they have studied and complete pre-learning in preparation for next year. Every subject will be supporting this by providing plenty of high-quality summer IL. The learning will be posted on our school website under the tab Secondary >Summer Independent Learning. There is a section for each year group and Independent Learning will be posted under separate subject headings. Please can I ask that you take some time to look at the website to look at the IL that has been set for your child and support them in planning out and adhering to their study programme? Ms Spencer, Interim Principal
Year 9 - End of Key Stage 3 Awards Ceremony Monday 22nd July 5:00-6:30pm We are holding a special awards ceremony for Year 9 to mark the end of Key Stage 3. Students will go home at the end of the school day and return to school at 5:00pm, dressed formally in their finest outfits. There will be refreshments served between 5:00pm and 5:30pm in the Key Stage 3 Hall, providing students and parents/carers with a chance to mingle and reflect on the three years that have passed. Following this, there will be the formal awards ceremony in the Dining Hall. During the ceremony we will be celebrating progress and success over the entire key stage. Please note that Year 9 students will have an Independent Learning Day on the last day of term (Tuesday 23rd July).

Josephine Baker [1906–1975]
8
Josephine Baker was an American-born French entertainer, activist, and French Resistance agent. Throughout her career Baker transferred knowledge and skills from one area of performance to another, thus creating a truly unique style. Her dancing was rooted in popular Jazz Age dancing like the Charleston. However, she used her understanding of different dances (such as of ballet, tap and African dance styles) to create a unique blend. In addition to this, Baker was renowned for incorporating comedy and singing into her performance to create a style truly unique. This was only possible as she learnt to apply skills and knowledge from one performance area across to another. Baker also made a stance against injustice, refusing to perform for segregated audiences (when an audience is separated based on race) in the United States. Furthermore, during World War 2 she supported the Resistance Movement to fight against the Nazi occupation of France. She smuggled messages in sheet music, housed refugees in her own home, performed in hospitals for the wounded and gathered information for the French intelligence services. Secondary Newsletter

Primary BRIDGES Mentoring – Session 2 On Thursday 4th July students from Year 3 and Year 4 experienced BRIDGES mentoring with 30 volunteer mentors from Year 9. The Year 9s had received mentor training and learnt about different questioning techniques such as how to encourage mentees to expand on their points. The primary students had prepared extremely well and were very confident in sharing their use of the Discovery BRIDGES dispositions. Haris Shaukat, a Year 9 mentor, has reflected on the experience: “We were impressed with how confident the Year 3 and Year 4 students were, for example they knew what all of the dispositions meant and had prepared examples of when they used them inside and outside of school. Even when we asked them tougher questions which they had not pre-prepared they were giving strong answers. The discussions often covered the importance of Discovery in different careers, and one of my mentees was explaining how he will use it in his future job as a palaeontologist. For the Year 9s it was tiring (we did 6 mentoring sessions back-to-back!) but very rewarding. I liked being on the side of the mentoring table. I would recommend other students to take on the role as BRIDGES mentors if they get the chance.” - Haris Shaukat, 9S “The mentoring was excellent because I got to distinguish between each of the dispositions and understand their meanings better. Also the mentors shared their own experiences which gave me a better understanding of the BRIDGES habits.” - Nadia Khan, Mirzakhani “I enjoyed the BRIDGES mentoring because it helped me heighten my understanding of the different dispositions. For example, the mentors told me how they used open mindedness and how this has helped them and now I know how I can be more open minded.” Ibrahim Ijaz, Mirzakhani

INA attends QUB’s annual Teachers Conference
As a growing sixth form we are always keen to forge strong links with Russell group universities and one such institution is Queens University Belfast (QUB). For the past two years QUB has been kind enough to reach out and support our Medical Society with information, advice & guidance for medicine and dentistry applications. More recently this partnership work continued when I was invited to attend a Teachers Conference in Belfast; this was a fantastic opportunity to explore the QUB campus and see their various facilities first-hand, including the school of Medicine and Health Sciences. It was an absolute pleasure to meet the university staff and students, all of whom were incredibly welcoming and it was clear to see the on-going investment in state of the art teaching and learning facilities. QUB has a long standing history, established in 1845 and it was one of the founding members of the Russell group universities in 2007. The medical, dental & pharmacy schools are ranked amongst the best in the UK, and along with all the usual perks of a prestigious university it also offers strong pastoral support for all students. Furthermore, they offer a very attractive scholarship for eligible students from Great Britain which comes with a reduction in fees and free flights home, which take just over 1 hour from London City Airport! Although QUB isn’t always an obvious choice for most students, I would strongly recommend visiting during one of their Open days before dismissing it. INA Attendance and Punctuality Regular attendance is a crucial factor in students’ educational development and success in achieving their full potential. Missing out on education and learning leaves students vulnerable to falling behind, putting them under unnecessary pressure. At Isaac Newton Academy every student is expected to maintain 100% attendance.
Punctuality All students need to be present on site and ready for line up no later than 8.25am each day and as such we advise students to be through the school gates (side entrance and southern entrance) no later than 8.23am.
Reporting of child’s absence In line with INA attendance policy it is the parent/ carer's responsibility to phone the school by 8.15am on each day of an absence. If you fail to contact the school to inform us of your child’s absence we may take the necessary steps to ensure your child is safe. Please take the time to familiarise yourself with the INA Attendance policy.
