Dear Parents and Carers, By the time you read this, we will have broken up for the year. I know how hard the staff and students have worked this year and know that they are all looking forward to a well-deserved break! I am immensely grateful to all of our staff, both teaching and operational, for all they have contributed to Isaac Newton Academy this year. This past week or so has been full of exciting learning opportunities including a trip to Berlin for Year 12 History students, a Year 8 science trip to Kew gardens, a medical activity day at Kings College, a Bio Security Trip for Year 12 students at the Houses of Parliament, a KS3 trip to Southend and a BRIDGES trip to Greenwich for some Year 8 students. We also celebrated the end of two Key Stages this week, with the KS3 Graduation and the Graduation Ball for Year 11 students. The students looked absolutely fantastic at both events! Thanks to Mr Atwal for organising the Grad Ball and to Mr Griffith and Mr Ball for organising the KS3 Graduation. Students and staff enjoyed listening to some fantastic original music devised by our Year 9 students in the Big Band competition on Tuesday evening. Many thanks to Mr Robinson for organising it. I would like to remind you that, in addition to reviewing and revising their learning from this year over the summer, students have also been given Summer Learning for each of their subjects. Students can access their Summer Learning over the holidays via the ‘Summer Learning’ tab on the INA website. http://isaacnewtonacademy.org/secondary/summerindependent-learning. If you are going away for a significant period over the holiday, please ensure that your child can access the summer learning tasks whilst away. Please also see the more detailed item about Summer Learning later in the newsletter.

We said goodbye to a number of colleagues at the end of term: Ms Lapish, Mr Davoll, Ms Atkinson, Ms Begum, Ms Watkins, Ms Kaur, Mr Dukes, Ms Epler, Ms Anwar, Mr Muhammed, Ms Saleh-Jehromi, Ms Ditta, Mr Kampanos, Ms Bhutta and Ms Verhasselt. They are heading off to a range of new opportunities and we wish them well and thank them for all they have contributed to INA. In their place we welcome a fantastic team of new teachers and operational staff. Ms Chamberlain, our founding Finance and Resources Director, has also moved on to a new position. We wish her equal success in her new role. Ms Chamberlain’s replacement, Mr Morton-Kemp startet at INA on 22nd July and we wish him well in the role, newly titled Director of Operations. Finally, I would like to thank you for all of your support for INA this year, and, in particular, many thanks for your support of me in my role as Interim Principal.

With all best wishes,

Jo Spencer Community Exams Community language exam deposits - Any students that have paid a deposit to sit a community language exam can come and see me in G17 for their refund If any students wish to take a community exam next year we will organise a meeting towards the end of the autumn term Mr Crowther-Green

Summer Independent Learning Students in Years 7-10 have been receiving feedback on their summer exams. It is vitally important it is that students in Years 7 to 10 use the feedback they have received from teachers on their recent exams to gain a clear understanding of the gaps in their knowledge and the questions/ question types that they find the most challenging. From this, students will gain a clear picture of the topic areas they most need to revise and work on further. We highly recommend that students devise an independent study/revision programme over the summer and that they space out their learning, rather than rushing it at the end of the holidays. They will consolidate their learning from this year, delve deeper into some topics they have studied and complete pre-learning in preparation for next year. Every subject will be supporting this by providing plenty of high-quality summer IL. The learning will be posted on our school website under the tab Secondary >Summer Independent Learning. There is a section for each year group and Independent Learning will be posted under separate subject headings. Please can I ask that you take some time to look at the website to look at the IL that has been set for your child and support them in planning out and adhering to their study programme? Ms Spencer, Interim Principal

KS4 Science - Summer Learning Revision mats to help consolidate Science learning from last year can be downloaded from the INA website for all new Year 10 and Year 11 students All Year 10 students (and Year 11s who have not purchased one) should be prepared to buy a revision guide and work book after the summer. These are packed with revision notes and practice questions to help students through their GCSE Science course. 23 July 2019

rchitecture INA students gain valuable insight into a career in architecture On Friday 12th July INA were fortunate enough to welcome Alex Bauman-Lyons to the school to speak to students from Year 7, Year 9 and Year 10 about a career in industry. Alex started the day with an assembly about architecture. This was an inspiring assembly which highlighted the range of dispositions and skills utilised by architecture – creativity, noticing, perseverance and hard-work to name a few. We learnt about some amazing architectural feats and also the path into the industry. Following the assembly, a smaller group of students from Year 9 and Year 10 attended a workshop. Students had volunteered as they had a shown an interest in a career in architecture.

The discussion was fast-flowing and the quality of questioning from INA students exceptional – What is the future role of artificial intelligence in architecture? Is the job recession-proof? What is the span of project from concept to construction completion?

Following the visit Alex shared his reflections with Mr Ball and specifically asked to pass on his thanks to the students of INA:

“Everything about INA impressed me. From the beautiful design of the school building, to the friendliness of the students, my visit was a pleasure from start to finish. The students listened to the presentation carefully and intently. The maturity and insight of their subsequent questions belied their years. All the children that I spoke to showed fantastic qualities and I know they have bright futures ahead of them. Thank you to everyone at INA for inviting me to their fantastic school and making me feel so welcome. - Alex Bauman-Lyons

INA students visit KCL for Medical Activity Day On Wednesday 17th July, 40 budding medical students from Years 9, 10 and 12 visited King’s College London (KCL) to hear more about what it takes to study and medicine as well as some other aspects of university life. They then completed the day by participating in a rotation of hands-on activities practicing clinical skills. Some of their reflections are below: During the day we had the opportunity for a campus tour where we got to see all the different facilities and social hang-out places for students. The KCL medicine ambassadors and Outreach for Medicine team provided a lot of information regarding medicine and uni life, which increased my passion to study at King’s. We also took part in clinical skills where we practiced CPR, suturing and bandaging. All of which were incredibly fascinating and gave a good insight into simple medical skills needed. - Sawda Khan The taster day was very beneficial for me: from being able to talk to medical students to learning about clinical skills and life at university as a student. Talking to the medical students allowed me to understand the challenges of applying to medicine and also the preparation required for UCAT and for interviews. The clinical skills also gave us an idea of the basic skills we need when starting as a medical students. Overall the day was informative but also enjoyable. - Akhil Pillai Being at KCL was a great experience and I learned a lot. I really loved the way we worked as groups to do different tasks. It was amazing and a lot of fun. - Sumandeep Kaur I really enjoyed this trip! Going to KCL was a great experience because I was able to try out some new clinical skills. My favourite part was when we were moving around different stations between practicing CPR, bandaging a broken arm and suturing. For me, suturing was the hardest but I managed it towards the end, which made me extremely proud. I also liked leaning about the Student Union and the different societies you can join. It was very interactive. Overall, I found the whole experience very educational and I am glad I was able to have this opportunity to explore more about the medical field. I think I’m now more open-minded about my career choices. - Nada Aweis

I learnt lots about medicine on this trip, including the options at university and beyond. The most enjoyable part was the clinical skills session which involved bandaging, CPR and suturing. I could also get a very good insight into medicine at King’s, where we were taken on a campus tour and shown computer rooms, lecture theatres and some labs, where students spend lots of their time. UCAT is an extremely important exam and I was shown and given a book with practice questions that would help me prepare. It was an extremely trip and will be beneficial for me in the future.- Jay Amin I enjoyed the trip to KCL as it was a great experience. Upon arrival we had a tour of the campus and got to see what it was like being a university student. We were shown all the different facilities such as the library and group rooms. Afterwards we were introduced to an average student’s timetable and found out about the different societies students can join to de-stress and for leisure. Overall it was an extremely valuable experience. - Safa Hassan We hope the students feel both inspired and informed about the next steps in their path to potentially studying medicine! Dr Mounsey

INA Attendance and Punctuality Regular attendance is a crucial factor in students’ educational development and success in achieving their full potential. Missing out on education and learning leaves students vulnerable to falling behind, putting them under unnecessary pressure. At Isaac Newton Academy every student is expected to maintain 100% attendance.

Punctuality All students need to be present on site and ready for line up no later than 8.25am each day and as such we advise students to be through the school gates (side entrance and southern entrance) no later than 8.23am.

Reporting of child’s absence In line with INA attendance policy it is the parent/ carer's responsibility to phone the school by 8.15am on each day of an absence. If you fail to contact the school to inform us of your child’s absence we may take the necessary steps to ensure your child is safe. Please take the time to familiarise yourself with the INA Attendance policy.
