Safeguarding The welfare and safety of our students is our priority. We do everything possible to ensure our students’ safety, both within the school community and outside of school, including working with relevant agencies to address any issues related to child protection. Students are informed of who they should go to should they have a concern about their own safety or the safety of others. At INA, all staff have regular safeguarding training to ensure that they are able to meet their statutory responsibilities. We also have a number of staff who are designated to respond to any child protection concerns and to liaise with social services: Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL) Leanne Abbott-Jones Assistant Principal Deputy Designated Safeguarding Lead (DDSL) Tam Broadway Primary Headteacher Sugra Alibhai Head of Sixth Form Designated Child Protection Officers Patrick Ball (Online safety) Amreen Patel Pardeep Chaggar Jag Singh Gareth Marshall-Jones David Wilson Mariam Mayet You can find the INA Safeguarding policy, Child Protection policy and other related policies and procedures on the Academy’s website.

Dear Parents and Carers, We hosted our Year 7 Open Evening on Tuesday evening. We welcomed hundreds of families to INA to share our vision with them and what it is like to be a learner at INA. Many thanks to the hundredplus students who helped with the event on the night - we had some great feedback on how confident and positive our students are from the visiting families. It was great to see so many of parents and their children at the Year 7 Settling in Evening on Wednesday. We know how important the partnership we have with parents is and the positive impact that it has on students’ learning. We are delighted with how Year 7 have settled into life at INA and how they are focusing on their learning. The slides from the Year 7 Settling In evening are now available on the website. On Thursday Year 11 students participated in a Careers, Advice and Guidance event with around 50 staff from Barclays Bank. They were taught how to write an effective CV and took part in 1:1 mock interviews and received individual feedback. Many thanks to Ms Alibhai and Ms McEvoy for organising this really valuable day and to the Barclays colleagues for giving up their time to work with our year 11s. And, finally, our Sixth form Open evening is being held on Tuesday 8th October for Year 11 students and their parents. This is a really important evening for our Year 11 students as they start to make decisions about the subjects they will study at Key Stage 5. Further details can be found later in this newsletter.
With all best wishes,

John Edmonstone [1793-1822]
John Edmonstone, who lived from 1793-1822, was a very important figure in the world of scientific research. He was born into slavery, but when he gained his freedom, he moved to Scotland. Edmonstone had a vast amount of knowledge about the animals of South American rainforests and the power of its plants. He was also an expert taxidermist (research this word and see what it means!). Edmonstone became a teacher at Edinburgh University and taught Charles Darwin. He was influential in helping Darwin develop his ideas of evolution. Edmonstone is also noted for educating people in the scientific world about the racist ideas that polluted the social environment. Many scientists were inspired these teachings, and Charles Darwin himself spent the rest of his life as a committed anti-slavery activist. Think about the level of understanding Edmonstone demonstrated. Not only did he use this to further the world of science, but he also helped make the world a fairer and just place for us all.

Splendid Theatre Return to INA with their production of Doctor Faustus On Thursday 26th September our Year 10 and 11 GCSE Drama cohort were treated to a performance of Doctor Faustus performed by the brilliant, whacky and unapologetic theatre company, Splendid Theatre. The story was an exploration of sin and sacrifice and delved into a complex story told with humour, clowning and free skittles… The story was told through the eyes of Lucifer himself, presented as three silhouettes who took us on a whistle stop tour of the story through song, dance and silliness, whilst implicitly exploring the social implications of greed, pride and gluttony. The company posed questions, allowed big statements to hang in the air for a little too long, and made every effort to tempt our students into making some sinful choices. Year 11 took part in a post-show workshop where they were given some excellent advice and gifted some take-away tricks for devising their political pieces this term. I can’t wait to see how Splendid Theatre have inspired their own creative work, both personally and academically. - Ms Rayner

INA visits The Old Vic and there’s still a spy in our midst…
On Wednesday 25th September our Year 10 GCSE Drama cohort visited The Old Vic to see Lucy Prebble’s A Very Expensive Poison. We were lucky enough to have participated in a pre-show workshop the day before, so we were arriving with some expectations about what we might experience. We knew that we were going into enter a world of many genres, audience interaction and political themes, which helpfully ties in very nicely with the practitioner we are exploring in our own drama this term. What we weren’t prepared for was how delicate the love story between Alexander and Marina Litvinenko was going to be examined, or just how comically villainous President Putin was going to be presented. Our students left the theatre with mixed reviews but plenty of takeaway and actionable ideas for their own pieces. As well as beginning to develop their taste in theatre, our Year 10 students enjoyed the opportunity to socialise as a cohort and celebrate theatre-making. 4 October 2019

INA Attendance and Punctuality Regular attendance is a crucial factor in students’ educational development and success in achieving their full potential. Missing out on education and learning leaves students vulnerable to falling behind, putting them under unnecessary pressure. At Isaac Newton Academy every student is expected to maintain 100% attendance.
Punctuality
All students need to be present on site and ready for line up no later than 8.25am each day and as such we advise students to be through the school gates (side entrance and southern entrance) no later than 8.23am.
Reporting of child’s absence
In line with INA attendance policy it is the parent/ carer's responsibility to phone the school by 8.15am on each day of an absence. If you fail to contact the school to inform us of your child’s absence we may take the necessary steps to ensure your child is safe. Please take the time to familiarise yourself with the INA Attendance policy.
