Dear Parents and Carers, We held our Next Steps interviews on Tuesday when all Year 11 students had a 1-to-1 with a member of the senior team to explore their future career aspirations and their current thinking around KS5 courses and degree courses. We were all very impressed with the students’ level of maturity and the serious thought that they are giving to their KS5 courses and beyond. It is clear that they have been talking to our sixth form students and have picked up a lot of advice from them. We are looking forward to reading their applications for INA’s sixth form. The deadline for applications is Friday 24th January 2020. On Wednesday, we held our first Progress meeting of the year for Year 11 students and their parents. The turnout was excellent. Thanks to all parents of Year 11 students for their support at this important time. As we head towards the end of term, there are numerous events coming up, including our Community Party on 10th December and the Winter Concert on 19th December. Please check the newsletter for further details. With all best wishes,
Jo Spencer
A group of Year 8 and 9 students were lucky enough to be the very first visitors to SPACE Studio Ilford. Their remit is to convert London buildings into art installations. The students were impressed with the intricate and unique sculptures on view and were particularly interested in the artists' back story/commentaries as inspiration for their work. The students learnt that every piece of artwork is trying to convey a message and stimulate conversation. That you don’t need to be able to draw to be involved in the art world as other career paths and potential jobs were explored. Art is a lot more than just painting and drawing. SPACE Ilford grand opening is on Saturday 7th December 12-4pm. Mr Crowther-Green, Assistant Principal

Layegha Marfat Layegha Marfat is 22 and works in an all-female team that clears land-mines in Bamiyan, Afghanistan. After four decades of conflict, Afghanistan is one of the most heavily land-mined countries in the world. Almost 700 square miles of Afghan soil remains contaminated by mines and other explosives, and they cause innocent people injuries and can be fatal. Marfat’s job is extremely dangerous but she is committed to making the region safe for the local population. Marfat is highly skilled and uses a demining probe to detect explosives. A key disposition to use is self-regulation. When an explosive is found it is crucial to stay clam, think rationally and use reasoning skills to decide the correct course of action. This selfregulation allows the team to dispose of explosives whilst also keeping themselves safe.

Remembrance Day Remembrance Day is a time to pay tribute to those who died during the First and Second World Wars. It is a time to be grateful for all the liberty we have and remember all the soldiers who gave their lives, so we could keep our freedoms. These soldiers are heroes and should never be forgotten. Remembrance Day is a way to keep these brave soldiers’ memories alive.
When do we celebrate Remembrance Day? Remembrance Day is nationally celebrated on the 11th day, of the 11th month, on the 11th hour. However, the UK is known to celebrate Remembrance Day on a Sunday. This is called Remembrance Sunday. Although Remembrance Day is celebrated on a Sunday, a two minutes silence is still held on the day itself to symbolise the end of wars and honour all those that have died. A veteran is a term referred to a person who was alive during a war and is still alive now. Queen Elizabeth II played a part in the Second World War as well; she trained in London as a mechanic and military truck driver. The queen remains the only female member of the royal family to have entered the armed forces during World War II and is the only living head of state who served in World War II. On the 11th of November (Remembrance Day), headlines such as ‘’Queen wiped away a single tear as the entire nation fell silent to commemorate all those who have died in the war’’ appeared all over the internet, as the queen sat at the Cenotaph memorial, and recalled the times of Britain at war.
What did INA do to commemorate Remembrance Day? The school does many things to commemorate the wars. One of these things is that Pastoral Leaders give assemblies to create greater awareness for all students. This encourages students to work on projects of their own and inspires children to go away and research these points of history in their spare time. Year 9 students also create memorials to honour the soldiers who sadly passed away. Other activities include children reading poems aloud linked to the war and carrying out the two-minute silence on the day itself. Ishaal Hassan 8N

Christmas Party 2019 Tuesday 10 December 3pm - 4:30pm We are delighted to announce this year’s Christmas Community Party on Tuesday 10th December 2019. Every year, we host a Christmas themed afternoon team for older members of our local community, governors and VIP guests. As part of our charitable endeavours and our commitment to community spirit, we ask each form group to donate two Christmas gifts to present to our guests. Please encourage your son or daughter to contribute. Due to the Christmas Community Party, there will be an early closure for secondary students; unless a student is involved in supporting the Community Party, the school day will end at 1.15pm. There will be no after school enrichments or interventions on that day and there will be no lunch for students, other than students who return consent slips as a helper for the party. Students eligible for free school meals will be given a packed lunch on request. KS3 & Y13

INA Attendance and Punctuality Regular attendance is a crucial factor in students’ educational development and success in achieving their full potential. Missing out on education and learning leaves students vulnerable to falling behind, putting them under unnecessary pressure. At Isaac Newton Academy every student is expected to maintain 100% attendance.
Punctuality
All students need to be present on site and ready for line up no later than 8.25am each day and as such we advise students to be through the school gates (side entrance and southern entrance) no later than 8.23am.
Reporting of child’s absence
In line with INA attendance policy it is the parent/ carer's responsibility to phone the school by 8.15am on each day of an absence. If you fail to contact the school to inform us of your child’s absence we may take the necessary steps to ensure your child is safe. Please take the time to familiarise yourself with the INA Attendance policy.

Dear Parents / Carers,
Re: Punctuality We are writing to all families to emphasise the importance of being in school on time. Students are expected to be in school by 8.20am. Children who arrive late are greatly disadvantaged as they miss out an integral part of the day. Important announcements are made in lineup by Pastoral Leaders every day that are extremely useful for students. Assemblies are used to cover a range of topics. Tutorials provide the opportunity for tutors to engage with our students and this is key to delivering pastoral care. This is also the time for our students to engage in tutorial activities (such as revision planning, discussing current affairs, organising themselves in regards to IL detentions and much more). By missing out on this part of the day can often lead to students being unsettled about the day ahead of them. Any appointments should be reported via our email address info@isaacnewtonacademy.org with the medical evidence attached (or reported into reception) prior to the appointment. High levels of unauthorised absences or poor punctuality can result in a referral to the Educational Welfare Service or other agencies which have a duty to investigate further and could result in legal action, including Penalty Notices being taken against you. Yours sincerely
