Dear Parents and Carers, It was lovely to see so many of you at our Awards assemblies this week. We had a great turnout from Year 7 parents on Monday morning for their first awards assembly. It was wonderful to hear Mr Griffiths, Year 7 Pastoral Leader, talk about how well Year 7 have settled into life at INA and the Year 7 form tutors describing how students are developing their BRIGDES dispositions. The Winter Concert on Thursday was packed full of wonderful performances. We are very grateful to Mr Coughlin, Head of Music, and all of the music team for their hard work and dedication. Students have been provided with independent learning over the Christmas break and they should also spend some time reviewing their learning from the autumn term. Year 11 students have been provided with revision for each subject and need to ensure that they adhere to their revision programme and spread their revision over the holiday. Parents can view the revision provided on the INA website isaacnewtonacademy.org/secondary/year-11-revision. The PowerPoint from the Revision Workshop for parents held last week is also on the website isaacnewtonacademy.org/secondary/year-11-revision. Please take a look at it if you were unable to attend. I would like to thank you all for your support this term and to wish you all a fantastic holiday. We look forward to seeing the students back on Tuesday 7th January at 8.25am. With all best wishes,

Lynette Yiadom-Boakye

Widely considered to be one of the most important painters of her generation, Lynette Yiadom-Boakye is a British artist acclaimed for her enigmatic portraits. In the summer of 2020 she will have an exhibition at the Tate Britain art gallery that will bring together over 80 paintings. Yiadom-Boakye has been awarded various prestigious prizes for her art. including the Carnegie Prize in 2018. In her early career Yiadom-Boakye had to work different jobs during the day to earn money before immersing herself in art in the evening. When evening time came it required an incredible amount of energy and focus to undertake her painting. Furthermore, it took extra effort for Yiadom-Boakye to fully engage in her artwork. It is sometimes difficult to undertake evening activities and IL after a day at school. Take inspiration from Yiadom-Boakye… the hard work does pay off. Secondary Newsletter

Shadow Games An interactive drama experience for Year 10 students
On Wednesday 4th December the Second Wave Youth Arts Centre visited INA to perform for students in Year 10. It was an extremely memorable experience which highlighted the risks associated with online grooming. Ian Nelson-Harding 10N, reviewed the afternoon for the newsletter: A group of university students and actors performed an exciting drama about a boy who had amazing computer and programming skills. The boy had a difficult childhood and there were flashbacks to times when he was mistreated by his father. The boy was vulnerable and was groomed online by a businessman who convinced him that violence brings peace. The drama showed him befriending a girl who protested for justice. The boy joins a march and ends up attempting to commit an act of mass violence. It was a very gripping story. My favourite part was at the end of the performance when we had to pretend to be lawyers. We had to defend the characters and then we switched roles and acted as prosecuting lawyers. This workshop was very useful as it helped us understand the dangers of the world and how easy it might be to be persuaded into joining gangs. Also, we learnt about how some people pretend to be nice but might in fact have different agendas.

Saturday Stretch Medicine – December 2019
The latest Saturday Stretch was presented by James, a medical student/ambassador at Kings College London, and it was a great success! James explained the core skills required to become a good doctor, such as good communication. The students completed role play activities and a questionnaire about the medical profession. James gave valuable advice to the students about extra-curricular activities they can be taking part in outside of their education and how to work on personal development. James shared his journey into medicine to encourage INA students. James was born in London but moved to a rural part of Jamaica very soon after. He lived there until was around 7 years old before he moved back to the UK. He was born with severe asthma so was in and out of hospital for a long time. When he moved back to the UK, he grew up with his mother and older sister. While at school, James faced several obstacles and it certainly wasn’t a straightforward journey for him. From a young age he was set on studying Medicine and nothing could change his mind. An example of this dedication can be seen in 2015. During his gap year, James spent three months in The Gambia where he assisted with the PROLIFICA Project. The project’s aim was to show that with effective screening, treatment and prevention of Hepatitis B, the incidence of liver cancer would decrease. During this time, he developed his laboratory and clinical skills, while also teaching Mathematics and English to students in various different orphanages. Yahya commented, “I found the session full of knowledge and I enjoyed myself, however, I wish it could be longer!”. Bilkis said, “ I really enjoyed this workshop as it taught me skills needed to study Medicine that I would never had thought of, for example, the last activity where we had to explain to our partners how to tie a shoelace!”. Ramzi said “I enjoyed the workshop, Medicine is something I am considering to study at university in the future. I learnt a lot from James.” Saturday Stretch Club is open and beneficial for all year groups. The next Saturday Stretch will be in January. Please see Mr Osmani for more information. 20 December 2019

INA Attendance and Punctuality Regular attendance is a crucial factor in students’ educational development and success in achieving their full potential. Missing out on education and learning leaves students vulnerable to falling behind, putting them under unnecessary pressure. At Isaac Newton Academy every student is expected to maintain 100% attendance.
Punctuality
All students need to be present on site and ready for line up no later than 8.25am each day and as such we advise students to be through the school gates (side entrance and southern entrance) no later than 8.23am.
Reporting of child’s absence
In line with INA attendance policy it is the parent/ carer's responsibility to phone the school by 8.15am on each day of an absence. If you fail to contact the school to inform us of your child’s absence we may take the necessary steps to ensure your child is safe. Please take the time to familiarise yourself with the INA Attendance policy.

This may be medical evidence if your child is unwell, or evidence of flight delays or circumstances beyond your control. We cannot authorise any absences before or after a holiday without this evidence and you risk being issued with a penalty notice.

Dear Parent/Carer As you will be aware, the INA Attendance Policy states it is the parent/carer's responsibility to phone the school by 8.15am on each day of an absence. When leaving a message on our attendance line, please state clearly the name of your child, their tutor group and the reason for absence. It is important ant to provide us with as much detail as possible for their absence and refrain from using vague terms like ‘ill’ or ‘not well’. If you fail to contact the school to inform us of your child’s absence this becomes a safeguarding concern. Please also remember that all medical evidence should be handed in to reception prior to an appointment. Alternatively, you can email us at info@isaacnewtonacademy.org. Please take the time to familiarise yourself with the INA Attendance Policy, which is available on the school website. Many thanks, Ms S Bhatti

The Ladder Project at Imperial College Since October 2019 a group of 15 Year 9 & 10 students have engaged in the Ladder Project facilitated by medical students - Barbara and James, from Kings College London. The aim of the programme is to expose students to higher education and develop holistic skills through a series of workshops. On Tuesday 10th December the students attended an ‘insight day’ at Imperial College, London - a STEM specialist university, to continue and conclude the programme. They were introduced to the courses on offer at Imperial College and higher education in general. The students also engaged in workshops including ‘Intentional learning’, ‘Entrepreneurship’ and ‘Vision planning’. The students have gained a lot through their involvement in the programme and we’re sure it will add huge value as they move into their GCSE studies. Here’s what some of the students have said about the programme: ‘The workshops have been great and have helped us develop essential life skills’ - Ayesha 9W. ‘In assembly we’ve been encouraged to explore options beyond GCSE’s and I feel I’ve already done some of this through today’s visit to Imperial’ - Ahlam 9I. We are grateful to Barbara and James from the Ladder Project for facilitating the workshops and Imperial College for hosting the day, and we look forward to continuing this partnership in the future.
