Dear Parents and Carers, Welcome back and Happy New Year! I hope that 2020 is a good year for you and your family. This week, our full schedule of Progress meetings commenced, starting with Year 9 on Thursday from 2.30-6.30pm. For the most part, progress meetings are scheduled on alternate weeks during the spring term. We always achieve 100% attendance and we know this has a significant impact on student outcomes. Your child will bring a completed appointment form home prior to the meeting. On the day of the progress meeting all students will leave school at 1.15pm and only return if it is their progress meetings. It is our expectation that students learn independently from home on the afternoon of progress meetings. Teachers will set Independent Learning for periods 5 and 6. It is also a good opportunity for students to revise and consolidate their prior learning. Further details and dates of the other progress meetings can be found later in the newsletter. This is a short but very busy half term. Full Year 11 mock exams start next week on Monday 13th January for two weeks. We know that Year 11 have been hard at work revising and preparing for their mocks over the holiday and we are looking forward to reviewing their progress once the exams are over. Year 11 enrichment will continue as normal to support targeted students through the exam period. The mock exam timetable is included later in the newsletter. On Tuesday evening next week, the options process for Year 9 commences with the Options Evening. Mr Clift-Matthews has provided further details later in the newsletter. It is vital that all students and their parents attend the event in order to gain a full understanding of the process and the subject choices on offer so that students can make informed decisions. With all best wishes,

Lynette Yiadom-Boakye

8

Widely considered to be one of the most important painters of her generation, Lynette Yiadom-Boakye is a British artist acclaimed for her enigmatic portraits. In the summer of 2020 she will have an exhibition at the Tate Britain art gallery that will bring together over 80 paintings. Yiadom-Boakye has been awarded various prestigious prizes for her art. including the Carnegie Prize in 2018. In her early career Yiadom-Boakye had to work different jobs during the day to earn money before immersing herself in art in the evening. When evening time came it required an incredible amount of energy and focus to undertake her painting. Furthermore, it took extra effort for Yiadom-Boakye to fully engage in her artwork. It is sometimes difficult to undertake evening activities and IL after a day at school. Take inspiration from Yiadom-Boakye… the hard work does pay off. Secondary Newsletter

INA Attendance and Punctuality Regular attendance is a crucial factor in students’ educational development and success in achieving their full potential. Missing out on education and learning leaves students vulnerable to falling behind, putting them under unnecessary pressure. At Isaac Newton Academy every student is expected to maintain 100% attendance.

Punctuality

All students need to be present on site and ready for line up no later than 8.25am each day and as such we advise students to be through the school gates (side entrance and southern entrance) no later than 8.23am.

Reporting of child’s absence

In line with INA attendance policy it is the parent/ carer's responsibility to phone the school by 8.15am on each day of an absence. If you fail to contact the school to inform us of your child’s absence we may take the necessary steps to ensure your child is safe. Please take the time to familiarise yourself with the INA Attendance policy.
