Dear Parents and Carers, In the final week of this half term, senior staff completed options interviews with Year 9 students. We were very impressed with their level of preparation and confidence in explaining their choices. Thanks to Mr Clift-Matthews and Ms Patel for the smooth organisation of the interviews. It has been a short but action-packed half term. The weeks are flying by and I am struck by how close the GCSE exams are for Year 11 (Just 10 school weeks until the written exams commence)! There are also some Year 11 revision lessons taking place in school (your child should be aware of the ones that apply to them). On their return the GCSE practical exams begin, with the GCSE PE practical taking place on Thursday 27th and Friday 28th February and the dress rehearsal for the drama practical taking place the following week. Year 7-10 and 12 spring term assessments start on Monday 2nd March. I am sure that the students will welcome the opportunity to revise and consolidate their learning in preparation. I would like to wish you all a good half term break. With all best wishes,

Jo Spencer

What is Det

Having an unshakab goal.

Homero Gómez Every year, around 200 million butterflies migrate 2,800 miles from Canada to Mexico. This is the longest migration of any insect. Many of the butterflies fly to the Monarch Butterfly Biosphere Reserve in Michoacán. It creates a natural wonder as clouds of butterflies land on the trees and turn the entire forest a vibrant orange. Unfortunately, the forest (and the butterflies) are at risk from illegal deforestation and global warming. Homero Gómez dedicated his life to protecting the forest for the butterflies. He educated as many people as possible through conducting tours and sharing social media posts. Gómez had a firm belief he would reach his goal, but also knew it would take a long time and a great deal of hardwork from all involved. Gómez and a team of activists stand up for justice for nature, and this fight will continue as a result of their determination.

Careers Fair

On Friday 7th February students from Years 11-13 participated in the Isaac Newton Academy Careers Fair. The event was split into two halves: the careers fair and the speed networking session. The speed networking session consisted of over 30 business professionals from the world of finance and trading. Students had a couple of minutes at each station to talk to the professionals before they moved on to the next station. This gave students the opportunity to interact and engage with trading professionals and ask questions about the industry. The careers fair comprised of numerous company stands, where students could approach the professionals and find out more about the industry and their company in particular. A wide range of organisations attended, including the Ministry of Justice, Deloitte, the Competitions Market Authority, KPMG, ENGIE, Morgan Stanley and many more. “I feel like today was a really good opportunity I feel like our whole year group gained knowledge about what to do next. For example I haven’t had an idea of what I want to do with my future but the advisers they said to do lots of research and try and get work experience. Through work experience you can get lots of insight and realise what you like and don’t like. It was very useful.” - Tanisha Rahaman, Year 11

“I found today really helpful. I wasn’t too sure about what I wanted to do in the future but I have spoken to a couple of people at the different tables and they have given me lots of ideas. For example, the Engineering advisers were really interesting and helpful and now I am considering going into engineering. It was really beneficial”. - Jordan Singh, Year 11 “It has been a really useful event, a once in a lifetime opportunity, to get a real insight into how things work and different career paths we can choose. It has helped me get an idea of what I want to do. I have spoken to people in careers that I wasn’t necessarily interested in, and people in careers I am interested in and it has given me an idea of what direction I might want to go in. At the moment I am quite interested in finance as a career. I made a comment to one of the visitors about a company I predict taking over another company and he was really impressed and shook my hand.” - Krishna Gohil, Year 11 “I think it was quite interesting talking to lots of different people in lots of different careers. I have always been interested in Science as a career but today has opened my eyes up to other options such as law and how there are lots of opportunities for work experience in different industries.” - Dhruvika Divecha, Year 11

The students were praised by the visiting professionals for their engagement and inquisitive minds. Some students displayed fantastic BRIDGES dispositions and secured work experience placements with the companies there and then. “We have all really enjoyed today and think that the students have engaged with us well and hopefully we have opened their mind as to what accountancy is, and the variety of different options within the industry. We hope to have inspired some of the students to join the industry.” - Rob Pullen, Blick Rothenberg “It has been interesting talking to the students today. They are young and enthusiastic; it is a good stage to introduce career options to them. The students were particularly inquisitive and asking lots of good questions.” - Kostas Tsoris, KPMG

Thank you to all the companies that attended and made it such a successful event.

INA Attendance and Punctuality Regular attendance is a crucial factor in students’ educational development and success in achieving their full potential. Missing out on education and learning leaves students vulnerable to falling behind, putting them under unnecessary pressure. At Isaac Newton Academy every student is expected to maintain 100% attendance.

Punctuality

All students need to be present on site and ready for line up no later than 8.25am each day and as such we advise students to be through the school gates (side entrance and southern entrance) no later than 8.23am.

Reporting of child’s absence

In line with INA attendance policy it is the parent/ carer's responsibility to phone the school by 8.15am on each day of an absence. If you fail to contact the school to inform us of your child’s absence we may take the necessary steps to ensure your child is safe. Please take the time to familiarise yourself with the INA Attendance policy.

Literacy boosting tips for parents One of the best ways you can help your child do well at school is by helping them to enjoy reading for pleasure – whether they like magazines, newspapers, novels or comics. Recent research into the reading skills of 15 year olds across the world found that children who are more interested in reading do better at school than those who don’t read for pleasure. Research shows that children who enjoy reading do better at school, and that parents play a key role in helping to develop this love of reading. The study also found that parents who talk to their children about books, TV programmes and films help to keep their children interested in reading. Having books, newspapers and magazines around at home also made a difference to how interested children were in reading.

Instant ideas for helping your child to love reading

đ&#x;“š Help your child to find books they will enjoy by joining the public library,

if you are not already members. It is free to join and many libraries have CDs and DVDs that can be borrowed very cheaply, as well as many different types of books that can be borrowed for free.

đ&#x;“š Let your child choose what to read, rather than choosing what you think they should read. đ&#x;“š Encourage your child to read magazines, comics, newspapers and the internet as well as books. đ&#x;“š Talk to your child about books or magazines you haven’t enjoyed, as well as things you love. đ&#x;“š Make time to read together if you can, even ten minutes a day is helpful. đ&#x;“š Buy books as presents. Don’t forget TV tie-ins and books about interests such as computer games or bands.
