Southern Entrance
We would like to remind parents and carers that the gate at the southern entrance will be locked at 08:23 each morning. Students arriving after this time should enter via the main entrance in Cricklefield Place.
Safeguarding
The welfare and safety of our students is our priority. We do everything possible to ensure our students’ safety, both within the school community and outside of school, including working with relevant agencies to address any issues related to child protection. Students are informed of who they should go to should they have a concern about their own safety or the safety of others. At INA, all staff have regular safeguarding training to ensure that they are able to meet their statutory responsibilities. We also have a number of staff who are designated to respond to any child protection concerns and to liaise with social services:
Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL) Jo Spencer Vice Principal Deputy Designated Safeguarding Lead (DDSL) Tam Broadway Primary Headteacher Designated Child Protection Officers Eleanor Seale Office Manager Leanne Abbott-Jones Assistant Principal Gareth Marshall-Jones Primary Deputy Headteacher
Patrick Ball Pastoral Leader
You can find the INA Safeguarding policy, Child Protection policy and other related policies and procedures on the Academy’s website.

Dear Parents and Carers, We have had a great week of end of term celebrations, starting on Monday with the Year 8 Awards Assembly. Last night we were entertained by the primary children’s Spring Spectacular PE and Dance show. Congratulations to all the performers and many thanks to Ms Hutson and all the secondary sports helpers. It was a great event! Tonight is the Spring Concert which will showcase performances from a huge number of students from all year groups. I look forward to seeing lots of you there. And then tomorrow we have our Awards Assemblies for Years 7, 9, 10 and 11. As always, these ceremonies will be a great reminder of all that has been achieved by the students through hard work, commitment, great teaching and the support and dedication of their families. We break up at 1.15pm on Friday and the summer term starts at 8.25am on Tuesday 18th April. I should like to wish you all a very happy holiday. With all best wishes,
Rachel Macfarlane

Isaac Newton Academy End of Spring Term Awards Assemblies On Monday 27th and Friday 31st March we held our end of spring term awards assemblies. At the assemblies we presented awards in recognition of students’ academic performance, attitude to learning, personal progress and the development of their BRIDGES dispositions. Excellent attendance and punctuality was also celebrated. The assemblies were a great opportunity for staff, students and parents/carers to come together to formally celebrate our students’ achievements at the end of term. Many thanks to all of the parents/carers who attended. Congratulations to all of the award winners and to all students at INA for a fantastic term!

Awarding merits, informal praise in class and the end of term awards assemblies are all part of this. Please speak to your child/children on a regular basis to see how many merits they have and how they are working towards the different awards on offer.
Merits We have completed another term for the merit race. Congratulations to all of the winning forms who won the inter-form competition. Also congratulations to those students who achieved bronze, silver and gold awards. The final league positions are below and good luck for the merit competition for the summer term! YEAR 7

Ahmed Al-Khafaji Award (Peer Commendation Award) Ahmed was well known for being kind, for helping others and for being extremely polite. He was also someone known for his hard work and absorption. The idea, therefore, is that the winner should be someone who encapsulated one of these qualities in that week.

Year 11 Study Leave - Summer 2017 The exam season starts on Monday 15th May and ends on Friday 23rd June. Half term is 29th May – 2nd June. Normal lessons for all students will continue until and including Friday 12th May. From Monday 15th May until Friday 26th May all Year 11 students will be in school all day and expected to attend their normal lessons if they are not in a GCSE exam. This will include pm lessons where they have an am exam, am lessons where they have a pm exam and lessons between am and pm exams, where applicable. Morning exams Each morning exam session will start at 8am. A 30 minute revision session (usually based in the dining hall) will occur from 8-8:30. At 8.30am a free breakfast will be provided for all Year 11 students taking the GCSE that morning. Afternoon exams Each afternoon exam session will start at 1pm (following KS4 lunch). A 30 minute revision session (usually based in the KS4 hall) will occur from 1-1:30. If a student has a lesson between a morning and afternoon exam, he/she should go to the lesson but the teacher will allow him/her to study for his/her afternoon exam rather than take part in the lesson. Teachers will continue with their Year 11 lessons right up until the final exam for that subject has been taken. Once the final exam has taken place, the student coming to the lesson will be allowed to get on with independent study for up-coming exams. The teacher will supervise and ensure that there is an atmosphere conducive to private study. From Monday 5th June, there will be study leave for Year 11 students. There will be a programme of revision lessons offered in the subjects where exams have not finished. Students will be expected to attend revision sessions that apply to them (although for some students who are good at revising independently these sessions will be optional and for others an invite will be issued and they will be required to attend.) There will be signing up arrangements so that staff know who they are expecting in advance of the session. Students will sign in and out at reception. At times when they do not have a revision lesson or an exam they will be expected to leave site to go home to revise. The last exam is on Friday 23rd June. We are planning to hold a pm Year 11 assembly on that day. The Graduation Ball is on the evening of Monday 10th July. Mr Crowther-Green, Assistant Principal

MATHS RELAY CHAMPIONS
Last week the Year 7 took part in their second INA maths relay. They were competing against other forms to see who could be crowned maths relay champions! Their points from the relay were added to their mathematician of the moment points to give an overall score. These were the top three forms:
1st – 7I = 802 2nd – 7C = 791 3RD – 7N = 790 A massive well done to 7I who are now the ones to beat!
Year 8 also took part in their second INA maths relay. They were competing against other forms to see who could be crowned maths relay champions! Their points from the relay were added to their mathematician of the moment points to give an overall score. These were the top three forms:
1st – 8W = 1006 2nd – 8N = 932 3RD – 8I = 838 A massive well done to 8W who are now the ones to beat!
Well done to all students who participated and made the maths relay such a great event. Students really used and developed many of their BRIDGES dispositions including collaboration, imagining, reasoning, perseverance and remembering. 31 March 2017 Secondary Newsletter

Year 7 and 8 Social Club Spring term Activity Trip On Saturday 25th March, Mr Davoll and Miss Kristiansen took eleven Year 7 and 8 students to an outdoor activity centre in South London. The students were extremely eager to get involved in a range of activities such as archery, blindfolded rope walks, shelter building and pond dipping. They also demonstrated great communication and teamwork skills to complete a number of competitive tasks, including a closelycontested tug of war. A special mention goes to Ram Solanky (7W) and Imran Miah (7W) for working collaboratively during all of their tasks. Finishing the day by toasting marshmallows on the camp fire, each member of the group was able to reflect on how they had developed the disposition of bravery by trying something new. We are all now looking forward to the Summer term trip!

Year 8 Girls Second HPV Vaccination Wednesday 19th April 2017 I would like to make parents of year 8 girls aware that their second HPV vaccination to protect against cervical cancer will take place at the school on Wednesday 19th April. Only those girls that returned their completed consent form prior to the first vaccination being given and have opted to have the vaccination will be given it. Please be aware that this vaccination is not available from your GP. I would appreciate it if your daughter could wear a short sleeve shirt or to bring their PE polo shirt into school on that day so they can change into it before having their vaccination. Please ensure that your child has breakfast that morning. Ms Seale Office Manager
Y10 students are thinking about Work Experience placements. They want to gain experience that will support them with their future careers. Can you support them by offering a placement at your place of work? We need placements in all work areas for 5 consecutive days from 3rd-7th July 2017. If you can support INA students please contact: Anu Patel (a.patel@isaacnewtonacademy.org) 31 March 2017 Secondary Newsletter

Half Term Humanities Hotspots! The Easter Holidays are a perfect opportunity to enrich and extend your Humanities knowledge. Why not take the chance to discover something new by partaking of one of the following activities. All will feed your curiosity, broaden your mind and tick off some features of your Cultural Passport. The suggestions are related to what we are currently studying in Humanities and you’ll be able to show off your knowledge in class on your return. They are easy to do and a lot are completely free!
Year 7: Travel out of London as a family
and visit Mountfitchet Castle near Stansted. This is a unique open-air museum where you can witness life in a Motte and Bailey Castle – something we will be looking at next term in History. If you want to stay in London, visit Westminster Abbey – lots of people we study in Humanities are buried here.
Year 8: Develop the knowledge you gained this term
by visiting the Maritime Museum in Greenwich to look at the Empire exhibition. You’ll get to see the Cutty Sark ship too and the first ever foot tunnel under the Thames.
Year 9 Religious Studies: Find out when your local Mosque or Church is holding an open day and take a visit. Follow events in the news involving women’s rights around the world. Year 9 History: Go and visit a secret Cold War nuclear
bunker hidden in Brentwood – The Kelvedon Hatch was built in the 1960s and can fit 600 people inside.

Year 9 Geography: Explore Kew Gardens and visit the
tropical rainforest exhibition (£6 entry)
Year 10/11 Religious Studies: Visit St Paul's
Cathedral – it’s got a great view of London from the roof too. (If you go during Choral Evensong, you’ll avoid the entrance fee.)
Year 10 Geography: Why not watch Slumming It
(Kevin McCloud) or the BBC Four programme Mumbai High: The Musical. You could also take a trip to The Crystal to learn about sustainable living.
Year 10 History: Visit the
Queen’s House in Greenwich to see the famous Elizabeth Armada portrait – how many symbols can you spot?
If none of these take your fancy, London is full of many more interesting and exciting museums and activities, mostly free of charge that you could explore.
We look forward to hearing about your adventures!

The Jack Petchey Speak Out Challenge Regional Final On Thursday 22nd March, myself, Aliya and several other students along with Mr Taylor and Ms Begum attended the Jack Petchey Speak Out Regional Finals. We attended to support Anushri Menon who was our INA representative. The event was held at Loxford School of Science and Technology, with competitors coming from all over Redbridge. The prize on offer was the possibility of being shortlisted to compete in the Grand Final in a Theatre in central London, alongside winning a cash prize. The competition was attended by the Mayor of Redbridge and judged by a panel of six judges, each from different backgrounds around the local area. The speeches covered a huge range of topics, from recent issues, political issues like Donald Trump’s presidency, sexism in schools and even one on the importance of tea drinking. The speeches were both entertaining and inspiring and kept the audience engaged for two hours, along with some great entertainment at half time. Although sadly Anushri didn’t win, it was an amazing evening and Anushri’s speech, with the title ‘The Secret Life of Teenagers’, was exceptional! The event was intriguing and made us think about some key social issues as we laughed, cringed and cried our way through each individual speech. We had an enlightening and an amazing experience, and would encourage the Year 9 students to start thinking about what they’re going to bring to the competition next year! Medical Activity Day
It was with pleasure that we accompanied a group of 18 Year 9 & 10 students to Kings College medical school for a medical activity day. It was a very informative day and students had the opportunity to work with medical students in interactive workshops, with a focus on the Heart, Lungs and dietary choices. The highlight of the day was when the students took Mr Darkin’s blood pressure during clinical skills and thankfully gave him a clean bill of health! We’re sure the experience on campus and the interaction with medical students will have inspired several students to consider a career in Medicine in the future. Mr Singh & Mr Darkin
