Southern Entrance
We would like to remind parents and carers that the gate at the southern entrance will be locked at 08:23 each morning. Students arriving after this time should enter via the main entrance in Cricklefield Place.
Safeguarding
The welfare and safety of our students is our priority. We do everything possible to ensure our students’ safety, both within the school community and outside of school, including working with relevant agencies to address any issues related to child protection. Students are informed of who they should go to should they have a concern about their own safety or the safety of others. At INA, all staff have regular safeguarding training to ensure that they are able to meet their statutory responsibilities. We also have a number of staff who are designated to respond to any child protection concerns and to liaise with social services:
Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL) Jo Spencer Vice Principal Deputy Designated Safeguarding Lead (DDSL) Tam Broadway Primary Headteacher Eleanor Seale Office Manager Designated Child Protection Officers Leanne Abbott-Jones Assistant Principal Gareth Marshall-Jones Primary Deputy Headteacher Patrick Ball Pastoral Leader
You can find the INA Safeguarding policy, Child Protection policy and other related policies and procedures on the Academy’s website.

Dear Parents and Carers, I hope that you all enjoyed a good break over half term. Sadly the terrible events in Central London on the night of Saturday 3rd June overshadowed the holiday. We are very aware at the current time that our students may be experiencing feelings of anxiety, confusion and anger. They will have questions and concerns and it is our job to provide a safe space for those who wish to do so to raise queries and to discuss their feelings. Our number one priority is to ensure that our students feel safe and supported and our procedures in school are designed to enable this. Staff will be especially vigilant for any signs of distress or tension in the coming weeks. We have a number of school trips due to go out in the last weeks of term. Several of these are GCSE related or have been designed to recognise students for notable achievements. We are keen that these opportunities are not denied to our students. However we have redone risk assessments in the light of the recent terror attacks and increased staffing levels for trips going into Central London. We would also understand if any parent wished to remove their child from a particular out of school learning experience (although we cannot guarantee a refund of monies paid in advance). Please contact me if you would like to discuss such a request. Many of our families will be celebrating Eid on 25th June. In the event that Eid falls on Monday 26th June, a leave of absence request will need to be made (and submitted to the school in advance) by any parent who would like their child to be granted time off school for religious observation for part or all of this day. Please note that exams are scheduled for Years 7 and 10 on Monday 26th June; these exams will go ahead regardless of when Eid falls and any student who misses an exam will take it on their return.

INA MOCK ELECTION RESULTS
To mark the General Election, on Thursday this week the students of INA took to the polls themselves. Every student in Years 7 – 10 was given a ballot slip and 667 of them submitted a vote, giving us a massive 92.7% turnout. Of the five main parties, Labour emerged as the clear winner with 75% of the vote, exactly mimicking the share of the vote won by the local Labour MP. It was really great to see so much political engagement and we hope that the experience has encouraged our students to be engaged in democracy in the future! 9 June 2017

PHYSICAL EDUCATION DURING RAMADAN
INA and the Physical Education department have the same expectations of all students participating in physical education during Ramadan that we have for each and every school day. Where possible, teachers will consider the sports, activities and tasks being undertaken in the lesson but students are expected to continue with their physical education. In the event that students are feeling unwell, they will be supported and monitored in the normal manner. In previous years, students at INA have maintained an excellent level of effort and have continued to participate fully in lessons during Ramadan. We as a department look forward to seeing this again this year. The department would like to thank all parents and carers for their continued support. Mr Beattie Head of P.E.

Praise and Recognition
At INA, we aim to provide a stimulating, challenging and rewarding learning environment which supports learning, celebrates achievement and encourages everyone. Awarding merits, informal praise in class and the end of term awards assemblies are all part of this. Please speak to your child/children on a regular basis to see how many merits they have and how they are working towards the different awards on offer.
Merits
We are now in the final half term of the inter-form competition, and it is very tight so far. Well done to all the students who have achieved 25/50/100 merits so far this year. The totals below are how many merits your form has achieved so far in this term. Keep working hard so that you can achieve your personal bronze/silver/gold/platinum merit award, and to also help your form climb up the merit league towards the top! YEAR 7

Ahmed Al-Khafaji Award (Peer Commendation Award) Ahmed was well known for being kind, for helping others and for being extremely polite. He was also someone known for his hard work and absorption. The idea, therefore, is that the winner should be someone who encapsulated one of these qualities in that week.

Please find below an invitation to our whole school “Travel and Tea” Community Event which will be held in the secondary dining hall. We have been working really hard to raise awareness and seek solutions for reducing the number of cars that are driven into the Car Park, thus reducing pollution. This is a great opportunity for parents to see some of the work the secondary Travel Ambassadors have been doing and support them in their initiatives.
We look forward to seeing you! INA Youth Travel Ambassadors

Hon Maya Angelou Maya Angelou [1928- 2014] is one of the
world’s greatest poets and a highly influential female role model. With the publication of her first autobiography in ‘I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings’, Angelou openly and honestly shared huge parts of her personal life. She bravely bared her soul and her personal history in this book, and in six subsequent autobiographies, telling of a lifetime full of highs and lows.
Let’s tell the truth to people. When people ask, ‘How are you?’ have the nerve to answer truthfully. Maya Angelou
‘To know her life story is to simultaneously wonder what on earth you have been doing with your own life and feel glad that you didn’t have to go through half the things she has.’ Gary Younge, The Guardian Newspaper
Top tips
Students
• Be honest with yourself. Acknowledge your own strengths and areas for development. • Be aware of who your real friends are, the ones who you can trust, and be open with. • Do the ‘right’ thing even when no one is watching. • Be honest about your learning challenges. Tell your teacher if you are confused by the Learning Objective or don’t understand the Independent Learning. Put your hand up to ask for clarification when you need it.
Parents • Discuss the importance of honesty with your son/daughter, sharing times and situations where your honesty was tested and how you responded. Discuss what you learned from this experience. • Tell your child about times when you have demonstrated honesty, even when it wasn’t to your advantage. • Discuss the impact of dishonest choices on a person’s life.
• Mentor/support a younger student to make better choices.

nesty Honesty Being truthful and sincere and approaching every situation with good intentions. Saying what you think and know is true, while respecting others. Honesty means being trustworthy, loyal and fair.
Behaviours Taking a conscious decision never to lie, being trust worthy, being able to admit to mistakes, being able to share problems and emotions, being able to think about and recognise the consequences of your actions.
students who are great role models for Honesty Shakim Samie-Martin 8N, is always very honest regarding his behaviour, even if he sometimes gets things wrong and knows he made a mistake, he will discuss it with honesty and not try to deceive. He shows real sincerity when he carries out an apology as he understands the consequences of his behaviour and can reflect effectively on situations.
Ramel Shakespeare 8A and Meera Mistry 8A also demonstrate great honesty. They are great role models for others and stand by what they know is right. They are supportive of staff when they are trying to resolve difficult situations and show respect to their friends, the community and teachers by approaching situations with often honest and unbiased input. They always stand up for what they know is correct.
