Southern Entrance

We would like to remind parents and carers that the gate at the southern entrance will be locked at 08:23 each morning. Students arriving after this time should enter via the main entrance in Cricklefield Place.

Safeguarding

The welfare and safety of our students is our priority. We do everything possible to ensure our students’ safety, both within the school community and outside of school, including working with relevant agencies to address any issues related to child protection. Students are informed of who they should go to should they have a concern about their own safety or the safety of others. At INA, all staff have regular safeguarding training to ensure that they are able to meet their statutory responsibilities. We also have a number of staff who are designated to respond to any child protection concerns and to liaise with social services:

Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL) Jo Spencer Vice Principal Deputy Designated Safeguarding Lead (DDSL) Tam Broadway Primary Headteacher Eleanor Seale Office Manager Designated Child Protection Officers Leanne Abbott-Jones Assistant Principal Gareth Marshall-Jones Primary Deputy Headteacher Patrick Ball Pastoral Leader

You can find the INA Safeguarding policy, Child Protection policy and other related policies and procedures on the Academy’s website.

Dear Parents and Carers, The KS3 and KS4 students are coping very well with the rigours of the end of year exams. As teachers mark the papers and students write their summative reports, we are all reflecting on the progress made during, and achievements of, the last school year. All of our students have developed enormously in their academic knowledge and skills but also in their learning dispositions and character traits. We look forward to the Year 9 End of Key Stage 3 Graduation Ceremony on 20th July, and to the last day of term Awards Assemblies on 21st July. We hope to see all of you there to join us in congratulating the students. This last week I have spent three days in appeals for families who were desperate to get a Year 7 place for their child but were unsuccessful (as nearly 1000 families were). It was sad to see their disappointment but also very affirming to hear them talk of INA's special qualities. On a happier note, I have also been visiting families of the new intake for Home Visits and picking up the Year 6 students’ evident excitement at starting at secondary school. Next week we host our first GCSE Art exhibition. Please feel free to come to the school on Wednesday evening to view the Year 11s’ final exam pieces, regardless of whether your son/daughter's work is on display. With all best wishes,

Rachel Macfarlane

Dear Parents/Carers, As it comes to the end of the school year, we would like to make a plea! We keep a small supply of uniform in school as a spare in case we need to provide this for a student without an item of uniform. If you are replacing your child’s uniform in September because it no longer fits them, and you would be happy to donate any items of uniform that you are no longer using to the school, we would be very grateful for your support! Many thanks Ms Abbott-Jones, Assistant Principal

Year 7 Castle Competition

Year 7s showed off their creative flair this week with some fantastic entries into the annual castle competition. Students were tasked with creating their own castle models and, as you can see from the pictures, there were some brilliant designs. The Humanities teachers were really impressed with the time and effort spent on these projects and it was incredibly hard to pick one winner. After much debate, the overall winners were Sakinah Choudhury and Aisha Patal for the most realistic Motte and Bailey model. Special mentions also go to Yaseen Alam, Raymond Charles and Luca Tancua for great effort. Well done to everyone who took part!

Praise and Recognition

At INA, we aim to provide a stimulating, challenging and rewarding learning environment which supports learning, celebrates achievement and encourages everyone. Awarding merits, informal praise in class and the end of term awards assemblies are all part of this. Please speak to your child/children on a regular basis to see how many merits they have and how they are working towards the different awards on offer.

Merits

We are now in the final half term of the inter-form competition, and it is very tight so far. Well done to all the students who have achieved 25/50/100 merits so far this year. The totals below are how many merits your form has achieved so far in this term. Keep working hard so that you can achieve your personal bronze/silver/gold/platinum merit award, and help your form climb up the merit league towards the top! YEAR 7

Ahmed Al-Khafaji Award (Peer Commendation Award) Ahmed was well known for being kind, for helping others and for being extremely polite. He was also someone known for his hard work and absorption. The idea, therefore, is that the winner should be someone who encapsulated one of these qualities in that week.

Good Deed Feed Ms Bridge: I would like to nominate Adriana Chiturlas 7S. The reasons are, she consistently works hard and always tries her best. She is always offering to help others without my having to be asked, I have seen her do this not just during lessons but around the school. Ms Hutson: Jodie King 9I – Raised £200 for Cancer research for cutting her hair and donated it to the charity. An amazing demonstration of her kindness and compassion. Ms Akhter: Zavier Khan 7I deserves to be mentioned in the Good Deed feed for voluntarily helping another student with his student report. Mr Ball: Kyle Bladwin 10W is always ready to line up to lessons 5 minutes early. As a result I often ask him to help out preparing the classroom by distributing resources or wiping down the board.

Cross Phase Enrichment (Debate Club) The skill of persuasion is a powerful tool; and the ability to convince people of your argument is an important life skill. Yet, how do you actually convince people to agree with you? How do you persuade people to agree with your line of argument? Well, that is what we have been looking at over the past three terms with Year 8 and 9 in debate club. It has been great to see so many students taking part in debate club – some of the debaters liked it so much the first term, that they signed up to the club Shama Daula for a second term! It’s been wonderful to have them back in the club, showing their grit and perseverance by refining and perfecting the skills that they’ve learned. Debate club has been a real journey of discovery, and our debating topics have ranged from ‘this house would lower the voting age to 16’ to the controversial Remy Adams topic of ‘this house would ban home learning’. It was especially difficult for the debaters when they were given a side of the argument to defend that they didn’t particularly agree with. I fondly remember Shama doing a fantastic job convincing others that home learning should, in fact, be banned - even though she disagreed with the statement! However, 16 June 2017

she showed great resourcefulness when preparing her argument, and made sure that she researched and found facts to support her case (although ironically, she did a lot of this learning at home!). Initially students found it daunting speaking in front of others and making their voice heard, but that quickly changed. All of the debate club members have shown incredible Hanifah Jalil bravery by standing up amongst their peers and expressing their views. The key to having a good debate is to understand others’ point of views in a respectable manner, even if you really disagree with it. Remy, Hanifah and Hafsah all demonstrated their emotional intelligence and integrity by listening constructively to the other points made, and were able to provide great examples of rebuttal during each and every debate. It was great to see such fantastic effort during the debating sessions, and I encourage all of the members to keep working on the skills that they have learnt. It is an essential Hafsah Suleman skill to communicate and persuade others and there is clearly a real talent and passion for it at INA. Well done to all of the INA students who have put their all into their debating! I am incredibly proud of all that you have achieved. Ms Howard

Hon Maya Angelou Maya Angelou [1928- 2014] is one of the

world’s greatest poets and a highly influential female role model. With the publication of her first autobiography in ‘I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings’, Angelou openly and honestly shared huge parts of her personal life. She bravely bared her soul and her personal history in this book, and in six subsequent autobiographies, telling of a lifetime full of highs and lows.

Let’s tell the truth to people. When people ask, ‘How are you?’ have the nerve to answer truthfully. Maya Angelou

‘To know her life story is to simultaneously wonder what on earth you have been doing with your own life and feel glad that you didn’t have to go through half the things she has.’ Gary Younge, The Guardian Newspaper

Top tips

Students

• Be honest with yourself. Acknowledge your own strengths and areas for development. • Be aware of who your real friends are, the ones who you can trust, and be open with. • Do the ‘right’ thing even when no one is watching. • Be honest about your learning challenges. Tell your teacher if you are confused by the Learning Objective or don’t understand the Independent Learning. Put your hand up to ask for clarification when you need it.

Parents • Discuss the importance of honesty with your son/daughter, sharing times and situations where your honesty was tested and how you responded. Discuss what you learned from this experience. • Tell your child about times when you have demonstrated honesty, even when it wasn’t to your advantage. • Discuss the impact of dishonest choices on a person’s life.

• Mentor/support a younger student to make better choices.

students who are great role models for Honesty Shakim Samie-Martin 8N, is always very honest regarding his behaviour, even if he sometimes gets things wrong and knows he made a mistake, he will discuss it with honesty and not try to deceive. He shows real sincerity when he carries out an apology as he understands the consequences of his behaviour and can reflect effectively on situations.

Ramel Shakespeare 8A and Meera Mistry 8A also demonstrate great honesty. They are great role models for others and stand by what they know is right. They are supportive of staff when they are trying to resolve difficult situations and show respect to their friends, the community and teachers by approaching situations with often honest and unbiased input. They always stand up for what they know is correct.
