Southern Entrance
We would like to remind parents and carers that the gate at the southern entrance will be locked at 08:23 each morning. Students arriving after this time should enter via the main entrance in Cricklefield Place.
Safeguarding The welfare and safety of our students is our priority. We do everything possible to ensure our students’ safety, both within the school community and outside of school, including working with relevant agencies to address any issues related to child protection. Students are informed of who they should go to should they have a concern about their own safety or the safety of others. At INA, all staff have regular safeguarding training to ensure that they are able to meet their statutory responsibilities. Dear Parents and Carers, Last week Mr Robinson hosted the Year 9 Battle of the Bands competition which is the culmination of the three year Big Band project. There were some fantastic performances and evidence of some great collaboration between students and lots of purposeful practice! Thanks to Mr Robinson for organising this great event. This week I have been delivering assemblies to Years 7 to 10 on the importance of revision and purposeful practice. The internal exams are over and students are now receiving feedback from their teachers. It is really important that students reflect on the detailed feedback they are given by teachers and are clear about what they need to do to fill any gaps in knowledge or skills. They can then use some of the time during the summer to review their learning, revise key knowledge, and practise and hone their skills. Next week, teachers will also be giving students their Summer Learning. Students will be able to access their Summer Learning over the holidays via the ‘Summer Learning’ tab on the INA website http://isaacnewtonacademy.org/secondary/summer-independent-learning If you are going away for a significant period over the holiday, please ensure that your child can access the Summer Learning tasks whilst away. During the assembly, I showed a short video of some sixth form students talking about how they review their learning and organise their time to ensure that revision is on-going (and therefore deep learning), not last minute (and therefore superficial learning). I will make this video available on Fronter for students to view over the holidays. On Monday, Team PE ran the final sports day of the year for Year 10 who have just returned from their work experience. Many thanks go to Mr Beattie and Team PE for organising the events and to staff for supporting this event.

Finally, six of our students (two Year 8s and four Year 12s) have travelled to Boston, USA to commence their five week summer school at Phillips Exeter University. We are looking forward to hearing all about their amazing experiences on their return but, in the meantime, here are some photos of them on their way out to the USA:

SAVE THE DATE!
Year 9 - End of Key Stage 3 Awards Ceremony Thursday 19th July, 5:00-6:30pm We are holding a special awards ceremony for Year 9 to mark the end of Key Stage 3. Students go home at the end of school and return at 5:00pm, dressed formally in their finest outfits. There will be refreshments served between 5:00pm and 5:30pm in the Key Stage 3 Hall. Following this, there will be the formal awards ceremony in the Dining Hall. Please note that Year 9 students will have an Independent Learning Day on the last day of term (20th July). Ms Spencer, Interim Principal

A Warm Invite to
INA’s Awards Assemblies Friday 20th July 2018 On Friday 20th July we will be holding our end of year awards assemblies. This is an important opportunity for the staff, students, governors and parents/carers to formally celebrate our students’ achievements at the end of the academic year. There will be a separate assembly for each year group. Please note the times as follows: 11:05-12:00 Year 7 assembly

At the assemblies we will be presenting awards in recognition of students’ academic progress and attainment, personal progress and the development of their BRIDGES dispositions. Excellent attendance and punctuality will also be celebrated. It is also a great opportunity for you to see some examples of the activities and events your child has been participated in this term. We believe that it is important that every student is represented by a parent at the Awards assembly for their year group. If you would like to attend, please ask your son/daughter to collect tickets for the awards assembly from his/her form tutor. Please request your tickets by Monday 9th July. Due to limited capacity, we are unable to accommodate very many additional family members. However, if you would like additional places, please notify the school office and we will do our best to allocate an additional ticket. I look forward to seeing you on 20th July. London Enterprise Adviser of the year is working with INA
As part of INA’s continued careers and guidance programme we work closely with London Enterprise Advisors. Paula Arkell-Waller who is INA ‘s advisor has been awarded the title of Advisor of the year.
Accessibility Plan The Accessibility Plan identifies the ongoing actions to increase access to education for pupils in the following three areas: • increasing the extent to which disabled students can participate in the school curriculum • improving the environment of the Academy to increase the extent to which disabled pupils can take advantage of education and associated services Parents are invited to comment on the current Accessibility Plan which can be found on the website under the Secondary Policies section. Year 7 Summer Humanities Activities Broaden your knowledge and extend your Humanities thinking skills with these suggested activities. You should attempt to do at least one of these activities
History • Research a Tudor monarch and create a fact file. (Henry VII, Henry VIII, Edward VI, Mary I, Elizabeth I) • Visit Hampton Court palace and write a diary account of Henry VII. (You could include details about his staff and day to day life) • Visit the National Maritime Museum in Greenwich and look round the Empire exhibition • Travel out of London as a family and visit Mountfitchet Castle near Stansted. This is a unique open-air museum where you can witness life in a Motte and Bailey Castle – something we will be looking at next term in History.
Geography • Visit Epping Forest and go for a walk – have a look at what flora and fauna you can spot – create a nature spotting diary. • Check the news regularly and follow any stories relating to Geography – e.g. floods or storms – write a report. • Watch David Attenborough’s Natural Curiosities on ‘W’
Religious Studies • Follow developments in the Middle East on the news – write down what you watch • Visit Westminster Abbey or St Pauls Cathedral or another church close to you to explore a Christian place of worship.

History • Create a fact file into either Gandhi or Nelson Mandela • Take the time to watch award winning films such as ‘The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas’ or ‘Gandhi’ to aid your understanding of the periods of History we are studying. • Visit the Imperial War Museum and take a look at the WW1 exhibition • Read Michael Morpogo’s Private Peaceful – a novel about a soldier on the Front Line during WW1
Geography • Explore Kew Gardens and visit the tropical rainforest exhibition (£6 entry) • Take a trip to the Thames Barrier to see how the government is managing floods. • Conduct an environmental survey in your local area. 1. Count how many cars you see from one spot over a set period of time. 2. Note down all the litter you seen in one area and categorise it into different types. 3. Count how many bins are available. Produce your findings in a report.

Sports Report CRICKET SEASON REVIEW As the cricket season has come to an end, here is Mr Marecar’s review on what turned out to be a busy Summer of fixtures.
Year 7/8 Team This team played a total of five matches this season and won two out of those of five games, narrowly losing the other three. The team played really well to beat the likes of Caterham and Wanstead. The players have to be credited for their versatility and adaptability as they had to play indoors, outdoors and sometimes with a red ball. Usman Ul-Haq and David Marion’s leadership has been impressive and they are already looking forward to next season. My personal highlight of the season came in the last match when Subhaan Imran took a brilliant, diving one-handed catch off the wall!
Year 9/10 Team The Year 9 and 10 team played three matches and won one out of those three matches. They started off with a comprehensive win against Caterham but then narrowly lost to Woodbridge and Valentines. Captain Zain Islam starred with the bat and ball and was aided well by Ali Hassan, his Vice-Captain. Like the Year 7/8 team, this team also had to experience different conditions and modifications but they managed well and impressed. We look forward to another busy season next Summer!

Praise and Recognition At INA, we aim to provide a stimulating, challenging and rewarding learning environment which supports learning, celebrates achievement and encourages everyone. Awarding merits, informal praise in class and the end of term awards assemblies are all part of this. Please speak to your child/children on a regular basis to see how many merits they have and how they are working towards the different awards at school.

Ahmed Al-Khafaji Award (Peer Commendation Award)
Ahmed was well known for being kind, for helping others and for being extremely polite. He was also someone known for his hard work and absorption; the idea, therefore, is that the winner should be someone who encapsulated one of these qualities in that week. Good Deed Feed Every week we ask teachers to nominate students who have been role models by carrying out good deeds for others and the INA community. A big well done for those who have been nominated this week! Ali Ali and Khadija Raja 7A - for giving up their time to rehearse and present their roles as comperes for the Isaac’s Word event on Wednesday afternoon. Year 9 – Spanish trip Visit to the exhibition Frida Kahlo: Making Her Self Up at the V&A on the 11th July
Before coming on the trip I knew nothing on Frida Kahlo. At the exhibition I saw many paintings of her and read a lot about her life. It was all interesting, intriguing and surprising. What made it fun to learn about her was the treasure hunt we undertook and the questions both in English and Spanish about her. I found fascinating that a whole exhibition was about her but she is truly inspiring as she didn’t conform to society’s norms and was a real feminist. Her appearance was testament of this as she had a monobrow and facial hair and didn’t care what other people thought about it. She also experienced an accident at 18 and couldn’t study yet this didn’t stop her pursuing her dreams. I can now understand why a whole exhibition was based on her as she is a truly inspiring individual and it has helped me for the future. I am glad I came to this trip. Saarah Chaudhry 9S 13 July 2018
