Safeguarding The welfare and safety of our students is our priority. We do everything possible to ensure our students’ safety, both within the school community and outside of school, including working with relevant agencies to address any issues related to child protection. Students are informed of who they should go to should they have a concern about their own safety or the safety of others. At INA, all staff have regular safeguarding training to ensure that they are able to meet their statutory responsibilities. We also have a number of staff who are designated to respond to any child protection concerns and to liaise with social services: Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL) Leanne Abbott-Jones Assistant Principal Deputy Designated Safeguarding Lead (DDSL) Tam Broadway Primary Headteacher Sugra Alibhai Head of Sixth Form Designated Child Protection Officers Gabriel Ayerh Patrick Ball (Online safety) Pardeep Chaggar Jody Lapish Gareth Marshall-Jones

Dear Parents and Carers, By the time you read this, we will have broken up for the year. I know how hard the staff and students have worked this year and know that they are all looking forward to a well-deserved break! This week has been full of exciting learning opportunities, including the Year 8 Speaking Challenge and the annual visit by the Bug Man and his menagerie of reptiles and insects to Year 7. We also had a lovely afternoon at the primary fete which was really well supported by secondary and sixth form students. There were some great student music performances. Thanks go to all involved. We also celebrated the end of two Key Stages this week, with the KS3 Graduation and the Graduation Ball for Year 11 students. The students looked absolutely fantastic at both events! Thanks to Mr Ayerh for organising the Grad Ball and to Mr Ball for organising the KS3 Graduation. I would like to remind you that, in addition to reviewing and revising their learning from this year over the summer, students have also been given Summer Learning for each of their subjects. Students can access their Summer Learning over the holidays via the ‘Summer Learning’ tab on the INA website: http://isaacnewtonacademy.org/secondary/summer-independentlearning If you are going away for a significant period over the holiday, please ensure that your child can access the Summer Learning tasks whilst away. We also said goodbye to a number of colleagues at the end of term: Ms Hines, Ms Arrowsmith, Ms Sabir, Ms Aouane, Ms Khatun, Ms Gohil, Ms Nakedar, Mr Chapman, Ms Roberston, Ms Morten, Ms O Rourke, 20 July 2018

Ms Hussain, Ms Davies, Ms Girard, Ms Vidal, Ms Sonagara. They are heading off to a range of new opportunities and we wish them well and thank them for all they have contributed to INA. In their place we welcome a fantastic team of new teachers. Finally, I would like to thank you for all of your support this year, and, in particular, many thanks for your support of me in my first term as Interim Principal. With all best wishes,
Jo Spencer
CAN YOU HELP? Dear Parents/Carers, As it comes to the end of the school year, we would like to make a plea! We keep a small supply of uniform in school as a spare in case we need to provide this for a student without an item of uniform. If you are replacing your child’s uniform in September because it no longer fits them, and you would be happy to donate any items of uniform that you are no longer using to the school, we would be very grateful for your support! Many thanks Ms Abbott-Jones

KS4 Science Summer IL Summer is a really important time for students to consolidate what they have done in Year 9 and Year 10. To support this, the Science department has set some summer learning tasks for students. Subject Folder: Students should be compiling revision notes, flash cards, concept maps, etc. in an organised subject folder. A ringbinder would be appropriate, with one for each Science being most beneficial. Students should bring this in for their first Science lesson of the year. Fronter: This has lesson Power Points, exam papers, checklists, handouts and worksheets with answers, including to questions in the textbooks. These are found under the student resources section of the relevant year group landing page.
Go to Year 9 or Year 10 Science, then Student Resources and look for the “Summer Learning 2018” folder Here you will find: • A copy of the Summer IL Power Point • All the check lists ready to print out
AQA Specification: The AQA website contains guidance material and specimen assessments as well as the specification for your course. This is really useful to see what content you have covered and what is coming up next. Students should print this out and keep in their subject folder. https://www.aqa.org.uk/subjects/science/gcse (NB: for Combined Science, choose the Trilogy spec) Exam Papers: Students in Year 10 should print off and complete a Paper 1 exam for each Science subject (however it is still always useful for Year 9 students to try these too). They can be accessed from the AQA website: • • • •
https://www.aqa.org.uk/subjects/science/gcse/biology-8461/assessment-resources https://www.aqa.org.uk/subjects/science/gcse/chemistry-8462/assessment-resources https://www.aqa.org.uk/subjects/science/gcse/physics-8463/assessment-resources https://www.aqa.org.uk/subjects/science/gcse/combined-science-trilogy-8464/assessment-resources
Revision Guides: These are hugely important resources for all students to have. All Year 10s (going into 11) should have purchased Collins revision guides. These will be made available to new Year 10s after the summer, with payment being made on Wise Pay. Other guides and workbooks are available, but always check that they are suitable for the AQA course. Revision videos: There are many out there on You Tube but make it clear in your search that you are looking for AQA resources. KS4 Mathematics Summer Learning The maths department have set summer IL for the Year 10 in preparation for their start of Year 11 and also to consolidate learning carried out this year. Students will have been given a pack of three papers (PIXL) in class this week. They are to complete all three papers which are due in on the first Friday back (7th September). If students are struggling with any questions there are lots of resources out there for you to use in order to help answer the question such as mymaths, mathswatch videos, youtube etc. On top of this, students will have been given IL online on mathswatch. Teachers have given students some pre learning to complete so that more time is given in class to practice and extend learning. Students are to go to https://vle.mathswatch.co.uk/ and log in using their fronter password or the password they created the first time they logged in e.g. Joe Bloggs; username – jbloggs@ ina. Once logged in just click on “assignments” and click the relative topic (Higher – using the sine & cosine rule and using the sine rule to calculate an area. Foundation – Venn diagrams). There are video links to every question if students are struggling, any working out should be shown in their orange books. Have a lovely summer and see you in September.

Isaac’s Word ‘A collection of prose, poetry and illustrations from staff and students at INA’ On Wednesday 11th of July, students from Primary and Secondary showcased their creativity and impressive artistic skills in a whole school writing competition. The entries submitted for the competition were incredible and really made it difficult for the judging panel to decide which entries should be shortlisted! After a gruelling few weeks of discussions and some heated arguments, my panel of respected judges came to their decision *drum roll please* PRIMARY

The evening was hosted by none other than Ali Ali and Khadija Raja (7A) who demonstrated excellent dispositions of ‘bravery’ and ‘confidence’. This evening would not have been as great if we did not have the support of parents and staff, so THANK YOU for attending Isaac’s word award assembly and celebrating with us! The turnout was amazing! Students were delighted that our Principal, Jo Spencer, came to see their outstanding pieces of work and was ‘…so impressed with the range of different forms of written work and illustrations to reflect the theme of hopes and dreams’ They are now eager for the competition to return next year – it will be bigger and better! Stay posted! Ms Begum

Saturday Stretch
Medicine
7th July 2018 On Saturday 7th of July, INA hosted the final Saturday Stretch session of the year when we welcomed Omar Jamil, a Medical student from Cambridge University. Omar has the student jump in right away by asking for a student volunteer. This volunteer then became a patient in a hospital and was given a script to follow. The goal was to treat the patient and prevent her from dying. The students were then challenged to think of appropriate questions to ask and decide what information was relevant or not. It was revealed that important details needed involved age, symptoms, how long the symptoms existed, if the symptoms were getting worse or staying the same, location of symptoms, medications currently being taken, past medical needs, and family history. The patient was complaining of stomach pain, so the students needed to decide what to do with that information. Because the patient was a female, they eventually asked if there was any possibility that she could be pregnant. Her mother was in the room, so it was possible that the patient would be inclined to lie. Omar discussed what can be done in this situation, because

instances like this are likely to occur in the hospital. While a doctor could ask the mom to leave the room, it may be better to create a more discreet situation, like telling the patient they need a urine sample, guiding them to the bathroom, and then also letting them know a pregnancy test was needed just to rule it out. At this point, the mother wouldn’t be around and the patient may be more willing to open up. If not, the test will let the hospital know if pregnancy is involved or not. It did turn out that the patient was pregnant and there was a reason for the pain. It was a very unique and rare situation, so Omar took the time to explain what was causing the pain and how the body might handle the situation on its own. Furthermore, Omar talked about how lower abdomen pain can also be associated with the appendix. Students then had the opportunity to see a laparoscopic appendectomy which also identified various other organs of the body as the camera worked its way around the body. It was amazing to see how different the inside of a body actually looks compared to the diagrams seen in textbooks. Omar then introduced a second patient, and students had the opportunity to look at real x-rays and identify any abnormalities. The topic of symmetry came up, which is often used when looking for any oddities in an x-ray, and Omar explained some of the few instances where symmetry will not be found among the left and right sides of the body. It honestly seemed like the session only lasted for about 10 minutes, because Omar was really engaging and students were wrapped up in their investigations of their patients. As the session came to a close, Omar shared what it’s like to study medicine at Cambridge and talked a bit about applying to university and what universities typically looks for in an applicant. While it was a shame to see Omar go, everyone was grateful for the opportunity they received to learn more about medicine in such an engaging way.

Walton-on-the-Naze 2018
Year 10 GCSE Geography Fieldtrip 2018 Last week the Year 10 geography students went on a trip to Walton-onthe-Naze to complete compulsory fieldwork for their current course. This fieldwork links to the UK’s physical landscape and the investigation in which they carried out will be examined in the GCSE exam. Students had a wonderful time exploring a part of the country in which they would not ordinarily see. The weather was delightful which made the day even more enjoyable. The students were very flexible on the day as when we arrived the tide was high and we responded to the challenge that nature gave us.

As you can see from the photos the students worked with lots of complex equipment such as ranging poles and clinometers. The students felt well prepared as they used the equipment beforehand in the classroom. All students participated in a focused way and completed the work they needed to do in a timely manner. This allowed them to have some free time to enjoy the seaside and have an ice-cream! The Geography Department are very proud of the Year 10 cohort!

Ahmed Al-Khafaji Award (Peer Commendation Award)
Ahmed was well known for being kind, for helping others and for being extremely polite. He was also someone known for his hard work and absorption; the idea, therefore, is that the winner should be someone who encapsulated one of these qualities in that week. Year 7: Kamile Sniokaite 7W Year 8: Adam Niaz 8A Year 9: Shakim Martin 9N Year 10: Avinash Desai 10A
Good Deed Feed Every week we ask teachers to nominate students who have been role models by carrying out good deeds for others and the INA community. A big well done for those who have been nominated this week! Taukir Kazim 8S in the recent Year 7 vs 8 game Taukir organised and led his team really well before and during the match, showing great support to his team. Well done Taukir. - Mr Marecar Ramel Shakespeare 9A who has come in on Tuesday mornings to help me coach the Girls Basketball team and has also offered his service to help officiate the Basketball games they have had over the last few weeks. A great help. - Mr Healey Keshan Beckett-Edwards 9S and Jay Gohil 12N are always keen to stay behind after school and during free periods to help out. They have helped KS3 reception daily for the last year (with registers, badges count, carrying phone boxes, lost property and so on) and have been really efficient and trustworthy with any tasks given. Thanks for all the help! - Ms Verhasselt Mr Barber, Pastoral Leader Year 7 20 July 2018
