Southern Entrance
We would like to remind parents and carers that the gate at the southern entrance will be locked at 08:23 each morning. Students arriving after this time should enter via the main entrance in Cricklefield Place.
Safeguarding The welfare and safety of our students is our priority. We do everything possible to ensure our students’ safety, both within the school community and outside of school, including working with relevant agencies to address any issues related to child protection. Students are informed of who they should go to should they have a concern about their own safety or the safety of others. At INA, all staff have regular safeguarding training to ensure that they are able to meet their statutory responsibilities. We also have a number of staff who are designated to respond to any child protection concerns and to liaise with social services: Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL) Leanne Abbott-Jones Assistant Principal Deputy Designated Safeguarding Lead (DDSL) Tam Broadway Primary Headteacher Sugra Alibhai Head of Sixth Form Designated Child Protection Officers Patrick Ball (Online safety) Pardeep Chaggar Jody Lapish Gareth Marshall-Jones

Dear Parents and Carers, The exceptional performance of INA in the 2017 public GCSE exams has been honoured by the Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan. The school was invited to the Schools for Success awards ceremony at City Hall, to celebrate its achievements in supporting students to fulfil their potential. The Schools for Success network represents approximately 6% of London Schools, those which have made high levels of progress with low prior attaining students and have a strong whole school performance. Now in its second year, Schools for Success has created a network through which schools can share experiences and best practice with others across London. The Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, said: ‘I’d like to congratulate Isaac Newton Academy for the fantastic work of its staff and pupils in the last year. Our Schools for Success programme shows the significant difference that a supportive and inclusive teaching environment can make for all pupils. London has some of the best schools in the country in the capital and by working together we can make sure that every young Londoner is given the opportunity to reach their full potential.’ On Wednesday we were delighted to welcome Piers Torday, author of 'The Last Wild' which all Year 7 students read over the summer. Piers talked to Year 7 about his writing and viewed some of their summer Independent Learning projects on 'The Last Wild'. He was blown away by the quality of their responses. It was great to see so many of you this week, either at the Year 7 Settling in Evening or the Sixth Form Open Evening. The slides from the Year 7 Settling In evening are now available on the website. And I am pleased to announce that applications for the sixth from are now open – again via the website. With all best wishes,

Online Safety & Secret Agent Opportunity Isaac Newton Academy are looking for enthusiastic Year 7 and 8 students to join Mr Dewal after school on a Thursday for two lessons based on the new Johnny English film. The cross-curricular lessons take students on an immersive learning journey through Johnny English’s school for Secret Agents in training. At the start of the programme, Johnny will set a mission for the class to protect their school and personal information from an incoming cyber-attack. Students aged 8 to 12 will then engage with STEM (science, technology, engineering and maths) subjects, learn about cyber-attacks and how to stay safe online, breaking codes and communicating secretly using science, all whilst developing the necessary skills to become a secret agent during the course of the two lessons before having the opportunity to take part in an exciting design competition. Each lesson is broken up into the following sections: 1. Briefing or Debrief – introduction 2. Mission Prep – development 3. Mission Task – individual or small group work 4. Task Debrief – plenary 5. Field Mission – homework Students that are interested please contact Mr Dewal in G42 to see if you can be accepted on the mission.

SOCIAL MEDIA SAFEGUARDING We have been made aware of social media accounts showing young people from Redbridge fighting and acting inappropriately by encouraging violence. We are working with the local council and other schools in the community to address these videos and any accompanying safeguarding issues. Safeguarding students is our most important priority. As you will be aware, we actively teach our students how to stay safe online and not to engage with inappropriate social media accounts. Bullying of any kind and physical aggression is not tolerated at INA and we make clear to students our expectations of the way they should conduct themselves in the local community. We educate our students about the importance of self-discipline and having respect for others. We will continue to work with our students on these very important values. We will be speaking again to all students about online safety and the legal framework concerning the posting of videos online which encourage violence. Of course, the most important partnerships in tackling bullying or violence (including online) are with you as parents and the students themselves. Any inappropriate behaviour of INA students in relation to this will not be tolerated, including any students promoting or following social media accounts that glorify or encourage violence and bullying. We will, of course, act on any information presented to us regarding INA students involved with posting on or following such social media accounts, in partnership with parents/carers, and in conjunction with our Positive Behaviour for Learning policy and our Safer use of ICT policy, both of which are available on our website. Any parents with any concerns should contact the school. Students are being encouraged to speak out and seek advice if they need it. Further details of our PSHE and BRIDGES programme which covers such issues, our Positive Behaviour for Learning Policy and Safer us of ICT Policy can be found on our website. Jo Spencer

Praise and Recognition
At INA, we aim to provide a stimulating, challenging and rewarding learning environment which supports learning, celebrates achievement and encourages everyone. Awarding merits, informal praise in class and the end of term awards assemblies are all part of this. Please speak to your child/children on a regular basis to see how many merits they have and how they are working towards the different awards at school.
Merits
The inter-form merit competition is heating up – with more and more merits being given out each week. Each merit you gain will increase your individual total and also your form’s overall total. So make sure you are keeping up the fantastic work to gain merits! Also if you are owed a merit go and collect it and make sure it gets recorded on your form’s spreadsheet! YEAR 7

Ahmed Al-Khafaji Award (Peer Commendation Award) Ahmed was well known for being kind, for helping others and for being extremely polite. He was also someone known for his hard work and absorption; the idea, therefore, is that the winner should be someone who encapsulated one of these qualities in that week. Good Deed Feed Every week we ask teachers to nominate students who have been role models by carrying out good deeds for others and the INA community. A big well done for those who have been nominated this week! Jeevan Bhamber and Feizan Akhtar were fantastic when helping out in the Maths department during Open Evening! - Mr Dukes (correction to information printed last week) Year 10, 11 & 13 Drama Students “I was just on a train from Stratford to Seven Kings on my journey home from work. Some of your pupils and their teacher were in the same carriage and I just wanted to say what great ambassadors they were for your school. The group were clearly having fun but were polite and articulate, and it was so nice to see a really diverse group together like that. Their teacher seemed really fun and friendly, but clearly had their respect. I had never heard of your school, but they made me want to look it up and find out more about you - well done!” - Michelle (a member of the public) Rajpreet Singh 7E - She’s helped me trawl around the school looking for the Summer Reading Projects for about an hour on Monday! - Mr Hanson Hamoud Ahmed 9E and Pritom Borhan Uddin 9I. Pritom greeted the school we were playing and brought them out to me. Hamoud helped in collecting kit whilst waiting for his brother. - Mr Marecar Keanna Bhalla Year 13 – She demonstrated great passion for languages and citizenship in taking over both the A level French and Spanish boards for sixth form open evening without being asked and doing a great job of tirelessly promoting the subject that evening. She really stepped up without being asked, including bringing along all learning across the 2 years to help students see what they too could do. - Ms McEvoy

Citizenship in action
At INA we are proud of the citizenship we show. This may be as individuals or as an entire school community. One example of how we role model citizenship is through our student council. The student council makes positive changes for the entire school community. Every student can apply to be on the student council, and the final representatives are elected using DEMOCRACY. This is one of the key

INA BRIDGES 9
INA Attendance and Punctuality Regular attendance is a crucial factor in students’ educational development and success in achieving their full potential. Missing out on education and learning leaves students vulnerable to falling behind, putting them under unnecessary pressure. At Isaac Newton Academy every student is expected to maintain 100% attendance.
Punctuality All students need to be present on site and ready for line up no later than 8.25am each day and as such we advise students to be through the school gates (side entrance and southern entrance) no later than 8.23am.
Reporting of child’s absence In line with INA attendance policy it is the parent/ carers responsibility to phone the school by 8.15am on each day of an absence. If you fail to contact the school to inform us of your child’s absence we may take the necessary steps to ensure your child is safe. Please take the time to familiarise yourself with the INA Attendance policy.
