Southern Entrance
We would like to remind parents and carers that the gate at the southern entrance will be locked at 08:23 each morning. Students arriving after this time should enter via the main entrance in Cricklefield Place.
Safeguarding The welfare and safety of our students is our priority. We do everything possible to ensure our students’ safety, both within the school community and outside of school, including working with relevant agencies to address any issues related to child protection. Students are informed of who they should go to should they have a concern about their own safety or the safety of others. At INA, all staff have regular safeguarding training to ensure that they are able to meet their statutory responsibilities. Dear Parents and Carers, In the next two weeks we have a fabulous array of end of term events, concerts and functions TT On Tuesday 11th December all students (except for those Year 11 students who have mock French and Spanish exams and GCSE D&T non-exam assessment) will leave school at lunchtime as we are hosting our annual Community Party for OAPs in the local area. TT On Friday 14th December it is our Christmas Jumper day. Everyone is encouraged to wear a Christmas jumper and to pay £1.00 for the privilege. It is also our Christmas Lunch day! TT Our Winter Concert is on Wednesday 19th December. It’s an event not to be missed! Students are very welcome to attend this concert as members of the audience. However, all students must be accompanied by a parent/carer whom they sit with. Mr Coughlin has written to the parents of all performers with details of how to get tickets. Tickets will also be available for parents to purchase directly from main reception and will go on sale on Monday 10th December. Please note that entry is by ticket only and, to comply with health and safety regulations about capacity, we are unable to admit anyone without a ticket, including small children and babies. TT The Year 7 awards assembly is on Monday 17th December at 8.55am. We look forward to seeing all of our Year 7 parents at this event. TT Awards assemblies for Years 8-11 take place on Thursday 20th December (details later in the newsletter) and students will be dismissed after the final awards assemblies at 1.00pm.

Friends of Isaac Newton Academy I am hoping to get parents from both Primary and Secondary together who would be interested in setting up a new FOINA (Friends of Isaac Newton Academy) group, with the purpose of planning fundraising events for the school throughout the year. If you are interested and hadn't done so before, in the summer term, I ask that you sign up with either the Primary or Secondary reception. Ms Broadway
At Isaac Newton Academy we like to ensure we celebrate the festive season in good spirit. On Friday 14th December we will be having our traditional Christmas lunch for all staff and students. We invite all students to join in the festive spirit by wearing a Christmas jumper or suitably festive colours on that day. Please note all students will still need to be wearing their lanyards. There is a suggested donation of £1 which will be made into the buckets at the school gates. The donations will support the school’s charitable endeavours and support events which enrich our school’s curriculum. Community Party 2018 Tuesday 11 December 3pm - 4:30pm
Due to our annual community party on Tuesday 11th of December there will be alterations to the usual school day. Unless a student has a Year 11 Languages speaking exam , Year 11 DT Controlled Assessment or is involved in supporting the community party, all students will finish lessons at 13:05 and will be dismissed from school. There will be no after school enrichments, interventions or clubs on that day and no lunch will be provided to students unless they are eligible for free school meals. Winter Concert 2018 The INA Winter Concert will take place this year on Wednesday 19th December at 6:30pm. It promises to be a fantastic festival of music making, inspired by music from around the world, which celebrates some of the wonderful performances that the students of INA have been rehearsing this term. Performers will need to arrive at INA by 6:00pm at the latest. The performance will run until approximately 8:30pm. Please note that audience members will not be allowed to enter the school building until 6:20pm and I would recommend not arriving before then as I don’t want you to have to wait outside in the cold! The dress code for student performers is all black (smart) with a red accessory. Shoes must be smart and may only be trainers if they are entirely black. Shirt, trousers, suits, dresses, skirts and ties are all acceptable forms of smart dress. The accessory could be a belt, tie, braces, head-scarf, jewellery, laces etc. Your child will find out if they are performing in the concert by Monday 10th December. Students are very welcome to attend this concert as members of the audience. However, all students must be accompanied by a parent/carer whom they sit with. We believe that this will really enhance the experience for both the audience and the performers and allow everyone to focus completely on the performers who have worked so hard to make the Winter Concert happen. Any students/children who turn up without an adult supervisor or who move to sit away from their parent/carer will be removed from the performance, even if they have a ticket. Tickets: Tickets will be available from KS3 reception when your child returns the reply slip below. Student performers will be eligible for 2 tickets each. There is not enough space in the hall for every performer to have 2 tickets so they will be issued on a first come first served basis. A small number of tickets will also be available for parents to purchase directly from main reception and will go on sale on Monday 10th December. I am sure that you are all aware that times are hard at the moment for school budgets. After 8 years of austerity we are so proud that we are still able to offer our ground-breaking music programme at INA. However, to support the long term sustainability of our big band project we are charging £2 for adult tickets and £1 for student tickets. Not only will you be hard pressed to find such a high quality, varied and enjoyable evening of musical entertainment for this price anywhere in London, by purchasing tickets, you will also be supporting the INA music programme for years to come. Phillips Exeter Academy Summer School
“If you are a serious student, intellectually curious, creative, eager to embrace new
challenges and opportunities, then Phillips Exeter Summer School may be for you.� This week Ms Abbott-Jones spoke to Year 8 and Year 12 students about a fantastic opportunity for six students to attend the Phillips Exeter Summer School from July 1st to August 2nd 2019. This is a prestigious programme of Harkness lessons, sports and cultural excursions at one of the top independent schools in the USA. Any student wishing to apply to be considered for this amazing opportunity MUST attend a meeting with their parent/carer at the school on Tuesday 18th December 2018 at 5.30pm prompt, where there will be the opportunity to find out much more and to ask questions. Application forms will be live on the Academy website following this meeting, with a deadline of 4.00 pm 8th January 2019 for returns. Interviews are being held the week commencing 14th January 2019. A Warm Invite to INA’s End of Autumn Term Awards Assemblies Monday 17th December - Year 7 Thursday 20th December - Years 8, 9, 10 & 11 On Monday 17th December and Thursday 20th December, we will be holding our end of term awards assemblies. This is an important opportunity for the staff, students, governors and parents/carers to formally celebrate our students’ achievements. There will be a separate assembly for each year group. Please note the times and locations as follows:

If you would like to attend, please ask your son/daughter to collect tickets for the awards assembly from his/her form tutor. Please request your tickets by Friday 7th December. Due to limited capacity, we are unable to accommodate very many additional family members. However, if you would like additional places, please notify the school office and we will do our best to allocate an additional ticket. I look forward to seeing you during these special celebrations.

Important Information for
Year 11 Design & Technology Students In the upcoming weeks all year 11 DT students will complete the NEA (non-exam assessment) part of their GCSE. This piece of coursework represents 50% of their final DT GCSE grade. In order to give our students the best possible chance of success, we have arranged for year 11 DT students to be off-timetable for these 4 days to complete this very important component of their DT GCSE course. This will take place on Tuesday 11th, Wednesday 12th, Friday 14th and Monday
17th December.
Break and lunch times will be as normal and students will be finished at the end of the normal school day. Students will not need their normal books for the day but should bring their organiser and equipment as normal. It is imperative we have 100% attendance on this day as any student who is absent will not have the same access to support and guidance as the other students in completing this aspect of the course and will be required to attend six hours’ worth of sessions after school to complete their NEA. Only the gravest of emergencies will be tolerated for absence or lateness on this day. Any appointments or commitments, medical or otherwise should be rearranged for an alternative day. Failure to attend this day will significantly impact the performance of any student in obtaining the best GCSE result possible. I cannot emphasise strongly enough how important it is that your child attends this day of school. The ADT department is committed to ensuring every student achieves the maximum grade possible in this component of their GCSE qualification and we really appreciate your support in this endeavour. Rowling’s success came with relentless hard-work and belief in her writing. But at times she had to take risks. As a single-parent trying to finish her first book she was told many times to ‘give up’ or ‘get a proper job’. Times were very hard for Rowling and her daughter. Regardless, Rowling took a risk and continued to follow her passion. When Rowling finally finished the first three chapters of her book, she sent the manuscript off to a publisher – it was quickly rejected. In fact, Rowling faced rejection from 12 different publishers. Eventually the book was accepted when the editor at Bloomsbury Publishing allowed their 8-year-old-daughter to read the first three chapters. She loved it and rest is history! Rowling became the first female billionaire author. She demonstrated bravery and perseverance - and took a big risk which paid off.

Praise and Recognition At INA, we aim to provide a stimulating, challenging and rewarding learning environment which supports learning, celebrates achievement and encourages everyone. Awarding merits, informal praise in class and the end of term awards assemblies are all part of this. Please speak to your child/children on a regular basis to see how many merits they have and how they are working towards the different awards at school.
Merits The inter-form merit competition is heating up – with more and more merits being given out each week. Each merit you gain will increase your individual total and also your form’s overall total. So make sure you are keeping up the fantastic work to gain merits! INA Attendance and Punctuality Regular attendance is a crucial factor in students’ educational development and success in achieving their full potential. Missing out on education and learning leaves students vulnerable to falling behind, putting them under unnecessary pressure. At Isaac Newton Academy every student is expected to maintain 100% attendance.
Punctuality All students need to be present on site and ready for line up no later than 8.25am each day and as such we advise students to be through the school gates (side entrance and southern entrance) no later than 8.23am.
Reporting of child’s absence In line with INA attendance policy it is the parent/ carers responsibility to phone the school by 8.15am on each day of an absence. If you fail to contact the school to inform us of your child’s absence we may take the necessary steps to ensure your child is safe. Please take the time to familiarise yourself with the INA Attendance policy.

Merry Christmas 25th December
Christmas is a religious festival that celebrates the birth of Jesus Christ. • It is a time for sharing food, sending cards and giving presents. • Many people decorate their houses with Christmas trees and lights. • Many Christians remember the story of the nativity and think about the miracles that happened in the story. • Christmas is a festival that is celebrated today by nonreligious people and also people of other faiths.
What can I do? • Share some kind words, buy a present or send a card to someone in the school. • Give money to charity or donate unwanted items to charity. You could volunteer and help the homeless. • Help those who might be lonely at this time of year. Visit an elderly member of your family.
