PUBLISHER’S LETTER
Extra Extra
T
his month’s feature is about movies and television shows that were filmed locally. Through the years, many of our neighbors have appeared as “extras” in movies that were shot in the Golden Isles. Extras, also known as background artists, are the people you see in the background of a scene. They frequently appear in crowd scenes such as a restaurant, bar, or sporting event. As anyone who has been an extra on a movie set will attest, the hours are long, with a lot of standing around waiting. And the pay isn’t exactly movie star wages. Most extras earn around $45 per day, which can run 10-12 hours. But, of course, no one does it for the money. They do it to experience the magic of movie making. Lucky extras may get upgraded to what’s known as a “featured extra,” which usually means standing next to one of the stars of the film. I actually got fired from a movie once for trying to go from a featured extra to a speaking role.

As an extra in a movie, there are two basic rules: 1.) Do not ever look at the camera, and 2.) NEVER, EVER talk to the star actors! In 1992, I was living in Atlanta while the movie Freejack, starring Emilio Estevez and Mick Jagger, was being filmed. I got a part
as a featured extra, playing a young executive of a company that was a big sponsor of a race car driver played by Emilio Estevez. In the scene, I was supposed to stand next my “boss” and Estevez while the two actors spoke their lines. When Emilio walked up and was introduced to my boss, I was just supposed to shake his hand. Instead, I shook his hand and said something like, “Nice to meet you.” Luckily, the director didn’t catch my little ad lib and they continued shooting the scene. Unfortunately, one of the ADs (assistant directors) did catch my indiscretion and I wasn’t asked back. With more and more movies being filmed here, I thought I’d give a couple of pointers on how to get your face on the big screen: 1.) Do not ever look at the camera. 2.) NEVER, EVER, EVER talk to the star actors! (Sounds familiar, right?)
Eventually, I did get an actual speaking role on the TV show, In The Heat Of The Night. I was thrilled – until I got the script and read my first line: “Daddy’s gotta hit the john, then we’re outta here.” Not exactly the onscreen debut I’d hoped for. Maybe I should have remembered Rule #2!

Georgia has become a hub for film and television production. It boasts enticing tax incentives established more than a decade ago, a highly skilled workforce within the industry, and an infrastructure that supports bigbudget productions. the Golden Isles are strong. St. Simons Island resident Bess Thompson makes an appearance as the pretty woman who stops to pet Uga in Forsyth Park. The fact that she’s an extra isn’t what makes this notable, it’s the fact that she’s the daughter of Sonny Seiler, the attorney who represented Jim Williams in real life and the owner of our beloved line of UGA mascots. Sonny played a judge in the movie. Other locals connected to the story are local attorney Austin Catts and the late Nancy Hillis, the accomplished singer, named Mandy Nichols in the film, who ran Sweet Georgia Brown’s with Joe Odom and later resided on St. Simons Island. starred Academy Award winners Ben Affleck and Sandra Bullock and had scenes filmed in Savannah. It was widely published that Ben fell in love with Georgia while filming the movie, which led to his purchase of a hideaway on Hampton Island Preserve. (Fun fact: the golf course on Hampton, Ricefields, was built by Davis Love III.) Bullock felt the love for the region too and bought her own compound on Tybee Island. This is important because Affleck knows the area well and has used it to his benefit. He

On the other extreme is 2017’s Hot Summer Nights. This coming-of-age film set in Cape Cod during the 90s rather surprisingly slipped under the radar while in town, considering it stars hot Hollywood up-and-comer Timothée Chalamet. in Coastal Georgia has always meant the convergence of three lifestyle pillars: faith, family and friends. But as the pandemic of 2020 sent the world careening into solitary confinement, home became even more. Our personal sanctuaries went into multitasking overdrive, transformed virtually overnight into classrooms, workplaces, computer labs, entertainment complexes and decorating centers. We were regularly invaded by outsiders via phenomena called Zoom, Microsoft Teams, and the like. By and large, we spent so much time nestled in our four walls that “home sweet home” took on a whole new meaning. For most of us, it was simply a matter of adjusting our home and space. However, for others in our community, there were much more significant challenges.

“For people living in unsafe, substandard or overcrowded housing when lockdown began, to call 2020 a living nightmare would be an understatement,” said Mason Waters, board chairman of Habitat for Humanity of Glynn County (HFHGC). “Things went from bad to much, much worse.” HFHGC was founded on the principle that no one should have to live in unsafe or substandard housing, and this is where they can step in to help. The nonprofit’s Hunt Ball fundraiser is a celebration of the Southern hunt and designed to help others in their hunt for a home. The 2021 event will be held Sunday, October 10th from 5:00 to 9:00 p.m. at Frederica Golf Club. HFHGC executive director and CEO, Becca Randall, who took the helm this July upon the retirement of stalwart Bert Brown, shared the organization’s excitement about the muchanticipated event and the role it plays. 36

“We completed three homes in 2019 and looked forward to starting construction on home number 88, on Reynolds Street in Brunswick, in the spring of 2020. That, of course, didn’t happen. Fortunately, we were able to begin building this year, postvaccination, with limited crews for safety. Our partner family, a single mom with four kids, moves into its new home this month,” Randall stated. The post-vaccination economy, however, also brought unexpected developments that may prove to be the Glynn County’s Habitat affiliate’s greatest-ever challenge. Lumber prices skyrocketed at a rate unseen in the U.S. since the post-World War II housing boom. “Lumber prices rose 60% between April and May 2021,” said Waters, citing industry research, “en route to a 374% increase above the previous year. The price of an average new single-family home in America rose almost $40,000. And prices
aren’t expected to drop any time soon. No one could have predicted these numbers. HFHGC is beyond grateful this year for the generosity of our supporters and volunteers. By their grace we’ve been able to readjust and recalibrate for the market’s new normal to build again.” Hunt Ball proceeds will also support Century Place, HFHGC’s new fifteenhome neighborhood in Brunswick, which broke ground in May and will include the organization’s 100th home. The unique community is located near schools, the Boys & Girls Club, Southeast Georgia Regional Health System and the College of Coastal Georgia. The Hunt Ball celebrates traditional Southern outdoor endeavors of fishing, fowling, and game hunting. The evening features wildlife artists and artisans; live demonstrations with owls, hawks

and hounds; exhibitions of vintage and European marksmanry; a live auction of exceptional hunting and fishing experiences, and entertainment by the Mason Waters and the Groove AllStars. Guests will enjoy local oysters, wild game, delicious BBQ , and other Southern fare, paired with bourbon tastings, an open bar, and some additional hunt-themed culinary delights. Dress for the informal event is jeans and stylish hunting attire. Tickets are $250 per person. The 2019 inaugural Hunt Ball was a sold-out event and was an evening to remember, so be sure to get your tickets early. Purchase by contacting Hunt Ball co-chair
Amanda Johnson at 912.663.9477 or go to hfhglynn.org > Donate > Hunt Ball 2021 to buy online. A new addition to this year’s Hunt Ball festivities is a pre-event pheasant shoot at the Dorchester Shooting Preserve in Midway, on Saturday, October 9, from 9:00 a.m. to noon. Limited blinds are available for the shoot, with two or three people maximum per blind. Registration is $1200 per blind and includes lunch. Pheasant Hunt Particulars: During a pheasant hunt, participants (in pairs or teams of three) occupy one of 12
stations located in a circle approximately 150 yards from a 60-foot tower. The stations are situated approximately 50-60 yards apart. The shooting round begins when a signal is given from the tower. All guns are to remain unloaded until the signal is given. Once the pheasants for that shooting round have been released, and the downed birds are retrieved, another signal will be given to end the shooting round. Hunters unload their guns and rotate clockwise to the next shooting station; no shooting is allowed while rotating stations. Once each pair of hunters has arrived at the next station, another signal is given and the next shooting round will begin. The shoot continues in this manner until each pair of hunters has visited all stations. As the number of blinds is limited, advance registration is required. If you’d like to participate, please contact Amanda Johnson or send your check to: Becca Randall HFHGC, PO Box 296, Brunswick, GA 31521. With your support, Habitat for Humanity of Glynn County can help make the hunt for a safe home easier for those in need, one family at a time.

ast month, we did a feature that focused on our neighbors in nature throughout the Golden Isles. Yet there was one so stealthy that it slipped under our radar. Bobcats! Jekyll Island is home to a small population of bobcats. So sneaky!
A bobcat was first documented by photo on Jekyll Island in 2014. A year later, they identified a second bobcat. By 2016, there were two kittens. Because these cats are so elusive, it’s hard to pinpoint exactly how many there are. According to Joseph Colbert, a Certified Wildlife Biologist with the Jekyll Island Authority Conservation Department, we have the eagle eyes and diligence of some AmeriCorps Members to thank for the current estimate of 10-12 adult bobcats. Using photos captured of the cats on the many trail cameras they have situated around the island, they have been able to identify specific and unique patterns on each cat’s tail to differentiate between them. It’s like their fingerprint! By recording these different patterns for each cat, they can now tell if they’re seeing the same cats or new cats in the area. Colbert shared that the first bobcat that they were able to monitor with a tracking device was a young male they named Bullwinkle (seen in photo on opposite page). He was found hiding in the foliage suffering from a case of what they were able to identify, with some assistance from
the Jacksonville Zoo, as tick paralysis. Fortunately, treatment was simple: remove the ticks! They reached out to friends on Kiawah Island and we’re able to secure a tracking collar so they could monitor him following treatment. He appeared to be heading off the island the last time his collar transmitted and essentially vanished. A recent report by Ben Carswell, JIA Director of Conservation and Sustainability, in the Jekyll Island Foundation Newsletter detailed more recent bobcat tracking efforts. “In 2019, with Jekyll Island Foundation support and
permitting approvals from Georgia DNR, the conservation team began working to capture and fit a GPS tracking collar on a Jekyll Island bobcat with the goal of enhancing the understanding of habitat use, movement patterns, and potential reproduction by these small but powerful predators.” They were unsuccessful in their attempts until 2020, when they were able to capture Victoria on the south end of the island, near the soccer complex.

Carswell describes her as approximately one year old at time of capture, “in good health and, as a female just entering her reproductive years, an ideal subject for closer observation of her activity.” This February, just about the time her tracking collar was about to fail, Colbert says, “we got lucky and were able to capture her and replace the collar.” This enables them to continue monitoring her for about another year or so. What has been learned from the Jekyll Island bobcats so far? Some interesting stuff! The primary food in the bobcats’ diet is rabbit. While they can be found anywhere on the island, there are some core areas where they tend to stay. (Victoria loves the golf course!). Bobcats are not social animals, so do not travel in groups, although a mother may be seen in a pair with a grown cub. They are generally timid and will dart away if they see you. Most, importantly, they’ve been able to find a sustainable food source, have adapted to urban conditions, and are reproducing, so they are comfortable with Jekyll Island as a home range. So, if you spot a bobcat, don’t be surprised. Their stealthy behavior and nocturnal movements make it rather unlikely that you will, but if you do, there’s no need to be alarmed or concerned. They’re not a threat to you. If you see an animal on Jekyll Island that appears injured or sick, please contact Wildlife Response at 912.222.5992. These cats aren’t bad neighbors to have around.

Local non-profit Firebox Initiative is the brainchild of Southern Soul Barbeque owners Griffin Bufkin and Harrison Sapp. The inspiration for creating a fund for service industry people in need stemmed from a fire that Southern Soul endured in 2010 that devastated the restaurant.
The event kicks off on Thursday, September 30, with a lively dinner at Southern Soul that will highlight the culinary skills of Chef James London of Chubby Fish, accompanied by the fine libations offered by Virgil Kaine Lowcountry Whiskey and Wild Heaven Beer. Chef James London is a proud native of South Carolina and graduate of the College of Charleston with a BBA in Hospitality Management. James also attended the French Culinary Institute and moved back to his home state for his first independent venture, Chubby Fish, a restaurant serving up innovatively prepared dock to table Lowcountry seafood. If you enjoy good whiskey but aren’t familiar with Virgil Kaine, you’re in for a treat! Accomplished chefs David Szlam and Ryan Meany founded this South Carolina brand and have been described perfectly as “honest,

In response, folks in the community stepped up and supported the eatery and their employees until they were able to rebuild. The grateful owners returned the favor by creating a nonprofit that can help local restaurant owners and hospitality staff who may find themselves in need. The funds raised from the BBQ on the Bluff events support the cause and enable Firebox to lend a helping hand in the form of financial grants to those in our local Coastal Georgia hospitality and service industry family who require emergency assistance. Firebox may also extend scholarship opportunities for qualified applicants. Pitmasters, chefs, and farmers from all over will be coming to the island to marinate, smoke, sear, and grill offerings that will delight the tastebuds of ticket holders.
unpretentious whiskey makers that aim to be as approachable as they are premium.” They boldly blend, infuse and tinker with choice ingredients to craft absolutely delicious category-shattering whiskeys. The folks from Wild Heaven Beer will also be back to supply their ambitious, creative, Georgia-made craft beers. Seats are limited and this dinner sells out, so get your tickets! The event at Gascoigne Bluff on Saturday, October 2, will showcase the prowess of the pitmasters. Before we get to the meat of the event, so to speak, we’ll mention that the musical ambiance of the evening will be set by the band Night Fever out of Athens. Entertainment veterans Jason Fuller and Ansley Stewart bring the yacht-rock vibes of a full band with a small footprint. You’ll be feelin’ the soulshine and groovin’ all night. Joining our hometown hosts of the event, Harrison Sapp and Griffin Buffkin and their crew at Southern Soul Barbeque, who we believe need no introduction other than the ever-present line out the door of their highly acclaimed smoke joint, are the fine folks that follow. Of course the best barbeque starts with glorious pork. Holy City Hogs will be supplying the pitmasters with that succulent
treat. Owner Tank Jackson and his wife Christian raise their animals outdoors in the wild without additives or chemicals. The hogs are allowed to roam in large pastures and wooded lots under hundred year old live oaks, feasting on the flavors of the farm’s earth, grasses, and roots. Talking to Farmer Tank, you instantly know he has much respect for the breeds his oversees. He’s on a mission to raise Happy Hogs. We know there will be a lot of happy people at the BBQ on the Bluff enjoying his fare. Catch Tank on the Discovery Channel show Moonshiners: Smoke Ring this fall. He and his co-host, legendary moonshiner Stephen Ray Tickle, will be venturing around the South to showcase the best barbecue pitmasters in the country. Fox Bros. Whether NYC-style pastrami, Italian charcuterie, Za’tar rubbed leg of lamb, Yuzu glazed smoked duck or good old Buffalo chicken wings, the focus will always be on the best ingredients, thoughtful cooking, and a great guest experience. With over 80 years of cooking and restaurant service experience coupled with several top awards at America’s foremost BBQ cooking competitions, this is not an upstart team, but a skilled and knowledgeable group of professional chefs who take BBQ culture to the next level. 17th Street Barbecue Owner Amy Mills, daughter of barbecue legend Mike Mills, who sadly passed away last December, is considered the industry’s go-to girl for all things barbecue. She is the James Beard Award-nominated co-author of Peace, Love and Barbecue, a television personality, and a branding, marketing and PR pro. Her company, OnCue Consulting, offers premiere barbecue industry education and she consults with restaurants and barbecuers world-wide. Amy divides her time between Boston, Southern Illinois and barbecue destinations across the country.
Sam Jones BBQ Known as an honest, hardworking guy who is passionate about barbecue, loves people, his hometown, and what he does, Sam Jones is the third generation to cook traditional whole hog barbecue. Since Sam’s family opened Skylight Inn BBQ in Ayden, NC in 1947, they have always stayed true to what has made them what they are: standard bearers for wood-cooked eastern NC-style barbecue. Skylight Inn and Sam Jones BBQ , as well as Sam himself, have been mentioned among the greats when it comes to legendary barbecue joints and pitmasters in many publications and TV shows. In 2003, Skylight Inn received a James Beard award for “America’s Classic” In 2015, Sam opened his own restaurant, Sam Jones BBQ , in Winterville, NC. Buxton Hall BBQ Growing up in Florence, South Carolina, where mom and pop ’cue joints reigned supreme, Elliot Moss gained a deep appreciation of the art of smoke. He has vivid memories of his grandfather setting up block pits to feed the neighborhood whole hog on special occasions, while helping his grandmother stir kettles of chicken bog, and his father saucing barbecued chicken and hogs on the family smoker. It’s no wonder this son of the South has vinegar mop running in his veins. Moss moved to Asheville in 2007 to help open The Admiral Restaurant, garnering acclaim throughout the South for his creative and eclectic fare. After being
nominated for Best Chef Southeast through the James Beard Foundation in 2013, he left to chase his barbecue dreams. Das BBQ With two locations in Atlanta, Das BBQ offers traditional fare like brisket and Brunswick Stew. When you are sitting in Das, you just know you are going to get a great meal and they’re bringing that goodness (and hopefully some of their banana pudding!) right to our backyard. Cool Smoke Tuffy Stone might be considered the most successful guy on the competitive barbecue circuit, having earned Grand Champion titles in nearly every major barbecue competition. Tuffy is the Cool Smoke team’s head cook, co-owner of multiple Q Barbeque restaurants and Rancho T in Richmond, VA, and appears as a judge and host on TV’s BBQ Pitmasters. A classically trained French chef, Tuffy, was one of the premiere caterers in Virginia and the co-owner and proprietor of A Sharper Palate Catering in his “pre-BBQ days.” In 2013, Stone took World Champion titles home from two of the eight contests in which he cooked, and followed up with another World Championship title, winning the American Royal Open. Since then, Tuffy has won contests all over the country, including earning Grand Champion honors at the Jack Daniels World Championship Invitational and the Kingsford Invitational.
Mama Jean’s Barbecue Raised in Destin, FL, Madison Ruckel followed his love of live music and family history to Charleston, where he studied culinary arts at Johnson and Wales. In 2006, he began his journey with Home Team BBQ. Through years of hard work and the mentorship of Chef Aaron Seigel, he became a proper pitmaster. His passion for live fire cooking has been inspired by the barbecue community and the invaluable experience he has gained at international events from London to Sao Paulo to Dublin where he served as a featured chef. Sugarfire Smokehouse They are doing something completely different at Sugarfire. They take the tastiest traditions of the best barbecue cities in the U.S. to create a St. Louis barbecue with a style all its own. Their award-winning barbeque tantalizes taste buds with baby back ribs, juicy pulled pork, and beef brisket, but they’re also famous for meaty mashups that defy logic and even gravity. Alongside the classics, they’ve ’cued up andouille, artichokes, cheese curds, mushrooms, and more. Certified Burgers & Beverage This is not your typical burger joint. For Brian Whitley and Richie Jones, it started with a passion for smoked meats, music, craft beer, laid-back times and the unique culture that makes Middle Georgia such a great place to live. As the craft brewing industry in Georgia exploded in 2014, so did their dream of opening a place that displayed their passion for food
artisanship and hand-crafted beer inspired by music. Sea Island Forge With backgrounds in construction, custom furniture, product design, photography and art, Steve and Sandy Schoettle envisioned a business that combined their respective crafts and a passion for bringing people together. The Schoettles and their team of talented artisans have built just that with a line of fire kettles and accessories that perfect the fireside experience. Outdoor gatherings around a roaring fire and the simple, meaningful traditions they foster are the cornerstone of the Sea Island Forge lifestyle. Also taking part in the event will be Southern Living barbecue contributing writer Robert Moss. Moss is the author of Barbecue: The History of an American Institution and The Barbecue Lover’s Carolinas. Additionally, The Local Palate will be on the scene. ehind the iconic gates of what was once knows as Boys’ Estate, sits an agency quietly serving some of our community’s most vulnerable children. MorningStar Children & Family Services was established in 1996 to serve children with developmental disabilities who are in the Georgia foster care system. This 300-acre property bordered by the Altamaha River was once Santo Domingo State Park. The footprint of the campus itself is nestled on 25 acres, and is surrounded by the natural beauty of coastal Georgia. The history of this property includes a working sugar mill, with ruins of the old mill still standing. and counseling programs, as well as administration of the agency. “Working with the children we serve is a calling, and we have some incredible team members.” said Nick Doster, Chairman of the Board of Directors for MorningStar. Beth VanDerbeck came to MorningStar as CEO in late 2017, after she was offered a tour by Doster. At the time, Beth had no plans to make a career change, but like many who visit the program, the mission of the agency was too important to ignore. Bringing new ideas and innovation to how MorningStar serves children is a hallmark of Beth’s leadership style. Like all agencies, MorningStar had to pivot quickly during the global pandemic. “With 52 children on campus when school closed, we just had to figure it out,” said VanDerbeck. The community stepped forward to make sure the residents had what they needed. One day, just before Easter, we received a call from a local church. First Baptist Brunswick had to cancel their annual Easter egg hunt, and wanted to share the candy and eggs they wouldn’t be able to use. Another great partnership was born when the Morrison family, owners of several local McDonald’s restaurants, heard about our need. The team at the Canal Road location fed our children three mornings a week for months. They were later joined by two other locations and the partnership continues today. We are thankful for our extraordinary team members. One of these is Devan Carter, who joined MorningStar in January. As part of our cottage supervision team, she works directly with the boys in Macon Cottage. Whatever activity our boys are engaged in, Devan can be seen enthusiastically participating along with the group. Her work exemplifies the mission of MorningStar as we strive to be a healing sanctuary for the children in our care. The real story at MorningStar is one of healing and hope. MorningStar are the stories of individual lives impacted by our services. There was a young lady who came through our program, then went back home. Unfortunately, however, her family wasn’t ready to care for her, and she had to return to foster care. When she was sitting in her DFCS caseworker’s office, she said “MorningStar is home,” and she wanted to come back to us. She did return, and we worked with DFCS to help her transition to a long-term foster home where she lives with her siblings. Being with her siblings is a fantastic outcome for her, as they were separated for years. Last year, a young man who had been with us for three years returned home. A few weeks after he left us, we noticed a five-star Google review he posted. Five simple words brought home the importance of the work we do here: “Y’all changed my whole life.” When the team needs encouragement, we can always pull up that review and draw strength from the knowledge that we made a difference in this young man’s life. One of the ways you can support MorningStar is by attending our annual fundraiser, Dinner Under the Stars, on
Saturday, October 16, here on our beautiful campus. Catered by Halyards Restaurant Group, working with local farmers and fisherman, this year promises to offer the best sustainable cuisine available. Live music will be provided by Suzy & the Bird Dogs. For the second year, Georgia Peach World is the presenting sponsor. I personally feel like there is nowhere like the Golden Isles for bringing the bounty of the sea and the land together in one epic dinner. This four-course dinner with wine pairings is a local favorite! Best of all, the proceeds benefit these exceptional children. Whether you have been our partner for the past three years, or you are joining us for the first time, the 4th Annual Dinner Under the Stars promises to be an unforgettable evening. A Season to Remember Elephants may never forget, but people with Alzheimer’s Disease
and memory impairment struggle with this. Some upcoming events in the Golden Isles
this fall make it the perfect season for us to show our loved ones and community members dealing with these issues that we remember them and support them.
I
n September, the Georgia Alzheimer’s Foundation will again be hosting the Golden Isles Alzheimer’s Walk on St. Simons Island, but that’s not the only local event that supports Alzheimer’s and memory care organizations. In October, Thrive at Frederica will host their Fore The Memories Golf Classic at Sea Palms Resort to benefit Georgia Alzheimer’s Foundation,

and Marsh’s Edge is bringing back Cars for a Cause benefiting the national organization Alzheimer’s Association. We’re taking a closer look at these organizations and events to spread the word about support for Alzheimer’s and memory care in the Golden Isles community. Memory Matters Glynn began in 1994 as Alzheimer’s of Glynn/Brunswick. In 2016, they expanded their mission to include all forms of adult onset memory impairment and renamed the organization Memory Matters. Their purpose is to educate, support and enrich the lives of those dealing with illness related memory loss, their families and their caregivers. They are located in a home at 2803 Sherwood Drive in Brunswick and their caring and compassionate staff hosts events at the house that are designed to stimulate brain function, hand eye coordination, focus, decision making and memory. Their events
and planned activities also encourage social interaction, which is extremely important. People with memory loss can feel comfortable in a setting where they know they are not alone in their struggles with memory issues. They do not have to feel embarrassed or self conscious. Monthly activities include yoga, arts and crafts, game time, and special themed events, complete with a photo booth with instant photos for keepsakes that the members love! Memory Matters also has support groups for caregivers called Caregiver Connections. These group meetings provide caregivers with a chance to talk about what is happening with their loved one with people who understand how they feel. Here, they can ask questions of those who may have gone through the same things. Caregiver Connections meetings are held at Memory Matters in Brunswick on the second and fourth Wednesday of each month at 1:00 p.m., on St. Simons Island at North Island Church on the third Tuesday of the month at 1:00 p.m, and on Jekyll Island at Jekyll Island Methodist Church on the third Thursday of the month at 11:00 a.m. Participants are welcome at all locations.
All Memory Matters programs are free for participants. Memory Matters is funded solely by donations from our generous community, often facilitated through the Georgia Alzheimer’s Foundation. As such, your participation in fundraisers such as the Golden Isles Alzheimer’s Walk and the golf tournament being held by Thrive at Frederica is vital to their mission. To learn more about Memory Matters and see their calendar of events, visit memorymattersglynn.com or call 912.264.0777. Founded in May 2020, the Georgia Alzheimer’s Foundation, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization whose mission is to support innovative research and local community services for those affected by Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias. The Georgia Alzheimer’s Foundation identifies leaders in the field who support their mission and vision
and provide funding opportunities to qualified beneficiaries through annual fundraising efforts. The Foundation is honored to be supporting Memory Matters Glynn locally with funds from the Walk so that they can continue to provide services that include educating and raising public awareness about Alzheimer’s Disease, social activities for persons with memory impairment, individual
consultations, and support groups in Glynn County. In addition, a portion of the Walk proceeds will also support the Goizueta Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center at Emory University in Atlanta. The Golden Isles Alzheimer’s Walk will be held on St. Simons Island, Saturday, September 25. During this family-friendly event, attendees

Last year was the inaugural event at Sea Palms Resort on St. Simons Island, and Community Relations Director Charlotte Graham was thrilled to share that the tournament will return on Monday, October 11 (Columbus Day) with an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start. $150 registration fee includes awards and buffet lunch, drink tickets, and more. Sponsorship opportunities available. For more details or to register, contact Charlotte at 912.295.4699 or by email to Charlotte.Graham@ ThriveatFrederica.com. On Saturday October 23, St. Simons Island luxury retirement community Marsh’s Edge brings back its fundraiser for the Alzheimer’s Association, Cars for a Cause. Twenty-seven vehicles were shown at last year’s inaugural
event and they’re hoping to add even more! Register your car to participate or buy a ticket to come out and see the unique and vintage beauties on display from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. There will also be live music, fresh food, and plenty of fun. Admission is $10, Car Admission free with a donation to the Alzheimer’s Association. To register your car, e-mail Annsley Felton at AFelton@ Marshs-Edge.com. To reserve a ticket, call 912.291.2001. All proceeds benefit the Alzheimer’s Association, a national not-for-profit and the leading voluntary health organization in Alzheimer’s care, support and research. This is our season to let our loved ones with memory impairment know they are not forgotten.

Top 3 Healthy Habits to Prevent Wrinkles
W
rinkles have a reputation for creeping up on us when we least expect, but it’s never too late to start preventing future wrinkles. Here are the top 3 healthy habits to prevent wrinkles from our local skin experts at Atlantic Shore Dermatology, a Forefront Dermatology practice.
rays can get through the clouds. According to board-certified dermatologist, Dr. Ashley Cavalier, “By taking minimal actions like wearing broad-spectrum sunscreen SPF 30 or higher, wearing a hat with a wide brim and sticking to shaded areas, you can drastically reduce the damage the sun is doing to your skin, and in turn decrease the rate at which your skin will age.”
1. Rain or shine, summer or winter, put on the sunscreen and shade your face.
2. Watch your sugar and carb intake.
Reminders about the importance of sunscreen may sound like a broken record, but honestly the sun and its UV rays are the number one reason your skin may be aging faster than it should be. No matter whether it’s snowing, raining, or blazing heat, those pesky UV
If you have a sweet tooth or love pasta night, our skin specialists have bad news for you. Sugar and refined carbohydrates cause transient elevation of blood sugar levels. These “sugar spikes” can damage and tangle your collagen by causing glycation and cross linking

of the collagen fibers in your dermis, the deep layer of your skin. This weakening of the collagen support structure leads to less pliable skin, sagging and wrinkles. Try to choose healthier options as much as possible. Curb your cravings by drinking more water and eating foods high in antioxidants such as blueberries, cranberries, grapes, and spinach.
3.Get your beauty sleep. “The phrase ‘beauty sleep’ was coined for a reason,” noted Dr. Cavalier. “Sleep allows your body a chance to heal and repair. It’s also the time when your skin cells produce most of your collagen. Your sleep positions can also affect the potential for wrinkles. By sleeping on your face, the repeated
compression restricts blood flow to your skin, resulting in weaker skin that is more likely to develop ‘sleep creases’ and wrinkles. Lastly, always remember to wash your face before bedtime. Leaving makeup and environmental dirt, which you likely don’t even realize is there, on your skin all night will never do your skin any favors.” When it comes to the best ways to treat your current wrinkles, Atlantic Shore Dermatology has you covered! Here are some of the options they offer:
Anti-wrinkle Creams These creams are designed to both prevent wrinkles from occurring and to reduce the appearance of those that have formed. Many anti-aging creams are known as “pro-collagen” creams that contain ingredients to promote your skin’s collagen production, which naturally declines as you age. Topical retinoids are a good first-line treatment for photo-aging. Anti-wrinkle creams containing antioxidants, vitamin C , hyaluronic acid, or plant extracts are also good adjuncts to retinoids. Stop by their St. Simons Island office at 7000 Wellness Way, Suite 7120 or check out their online store at atlanticshoredermatology.com for anti-aging skin care products.
and discoloration,” Dr. Cavalier described. “They also enhance collagen production and remove the top layer of the skin revealing a smoother, more radiant complexion. There are multiple different strengths of chemical peels that range from surface level peels to deeper peels. A consultation with your dermatology office will help determine which type of chemical peels will best target your needs.”
lines and creases to smooth your skin.” Fillers are versatile and can be used to lift the cheeks and jowls, and smooth and soften the lines on the lower face. Fillers can last between 6 to 18 months, giving you fast results at a fraction of the cost of a facelift. Depending on your skin goals, it is common for neuromodulators and dermal fillers to be used in conjunction with each other.
Preventative Neuromodulators
Effective collagen boosting medical procedures to firm and regenerate the skin include microneedling, and the use of laser or lightbased energy devices. These work by triggering the healing cascade in your skin to stimulate new and youthful collagen. Lasers use the technology of selective photothermolysis. Experienced providers Rachel Hawkins Duncan, PA-C; Hannah Davis, NP-C; Lindsey Gross Jones, PA-C; and Ashley Cavalier, M.D. at Atlantic Shore Dermatology can accurately diagnose skin conditions to help choose and safely perform the best laser treatments for you. Whether it is treating unwanted age spots, broken capillaries, or zapping unwanted hair or tattoos, they’ve got you covered!
Botox® and Dysport®, are fantastic cosmetic treatments for facial wrinkles. “These products are purified substances safely derived from bacteria and are used to relax facial muscles, softening the expressions that cause wrinkling of the skin over time,” explained Dr. Cavalier. “They are commonly placed on the forehead, frown lines and ‘crow’s feet’ next to eyes. These neuromodulators can also be used off-label on the lower face with the ‘lip flip’ which can relax the skin above the top lip to smooth the lines and give the lip a fuller look. These injection procedures are best performed at the office of a board-certified dermatologist with extensive experience in performing these techniques. They will be able to determine what is best for you once learning what your skin goals are.”
Dermal Fillers Chemical Peels “A great, non-invasive option, chemical peels help remove dull surface cells, improve fine lines and wrinkles, and reduce sunspots
“Another great treatment for reducing wrinkles and providing a more youthful appearance is dermal fillers.” added Dr. Cavalier. “Instead of relaxing the muscles they fill the

he federal estate tax has been on the endangered species list for several years, but several Congressional members in Washington are hoping to revive this rarely seen tax. Before you stop reading because you think “this tax only applies to the super wealthy,” consider (1) what is included in your taxable estate: bank accounts, securities, homes and other real estate, retirement accounts, life insurance, businesses, personal property, etc., and (2) an estate tax rate of 50%. To make sure your financial legacy transfers to your family and named beneficiaries instead of the government, consider the Estate Tax laws.
Federal Estate Tax Exemption Amount:
to realize large capital gains upon the sale of the appreciated asset if sold shortly after death.
CURRENT LAW: The current
federal estate tax exemption is $11.7 million; this amount will expire on December 31, 2025, and revert to $5 million, adjusted for inflation.
PROPOSED PLAN: Elimination
PROPOSED PLAN: Not many
Congressional proposals have been made to eliminate planning strategies long used to maximize what is passed to family members at death, but all – or 50% from estate tax – is not lost … yet! Prior to any tax law changes, opportunities are currently available to make or change plans. Consult with your attorney, CPA, and financial advisor to develop your plan this year and be ready to pull the trigger if or when the time comes.
specifics are detailed, but indications are that the proposed estate tax exemption will be reduced to $3.5 million. Stepped-up Income Tax Basis upon Death to an Individual: CURRENT TAX LAW: For most assets, the income tax basis is adjusted or “stepped up” to the fair market value of that asset on the date of death. This permits the family and beneficiaries not
of income tax basis adjustment, except for certain assets which may be stepped-up to $1,000,000.

POLISHED PEYTON by Jennifer Daniel
A
few months ago, a lady stopped me in the grocery store to tell me how much she enjoyed reading the etiquette tips each month. As we parted ways she said, “I bet you never miss a beat with all of this.” I smiled and replied, “I absolutely do.” The truth is, we all do. This month, I thought it would be fun to talk about five ways we all break etiquette rules, occasionally. 1. Forgetting to Introduce Others
Whether at work, a neighborhood picnic, or a child’s birthday party, the situation is the same. If you are standing with someone and another person walks up, you should make an introduction. Even if you don’t know the person or maybe you forgot their name (it happens) introductions are still in order. Simply apologize and say something like, “Hello, It is so great to see you. This is my
Breaking the Rules neighbor, Elizabeth. Please remind me of your first name again.” 2. Announcing That You’re Going
you are running late, call or text the friends or co-workers you are meeting. Let them know what happened and what time you expect to join them.
to the Restroom.
We all do this. Dinner with good friends leads to stories and laughter. We hate to jump up, so it’s almost apologetic: “I’m going to the rest room. I’ll be right back. Don’t say anything funny until I return.” No matter who we are with, all we really need to say is, “Excuse me, I’ll be right back.” 3. Being Late.
We all have that one friend. The friend that arrives late to everything so you tell them it starts thirty minutes earlier in hopes they make it on time. Being late once in a while happens to all of us. Traffic really was backed up, our babysitter really was late, or the dog ran off. Occasional tardiness happens, but don’t let it become a habit. If
4. Covering Your Mouth with Your Right Hand.
For most of us, it’s the hand we use to pass the salt, use a pen, or shake the hand of a friend or new acquaintance. Make an effort this week to use your left hand to cover your mouth if you yawn, touch your face, or sneeze. It comes so natural to use our dominant hand for everything – it will take practice to use your left. 5. Drinking as the Subject of a Toast.
If people are toasting you, you do not drink to yourself. It’s like standing up and patting yourself on the back and then also clapping loudly. As the subject of the toast, you should just smile and nod.

Small Yard, Big Story: Wartime Production at Brunswick Marine
D
ue to the city’s deep natural harbor, it is no surprise that there is a long legacy of shipbuilding in Brunswick. The Brunswick Marine Construction Corporation was a local shipbuilding and repair facility that supplied ships for both World Wars, operating through the midtwentieth century. It was, in fact, Brunswick Marine rather than the better known J.A. Jones Construction Company that won the U.S. Maritime Commission contract in 1942 to establish a Liberty shipyard in Glynn County. Brunswick Marine carved the six ways and massive lot for workshops out of the marsh along the Brunswick River. The Liberty shipyard would be officially handed over to the Jones Company in 1943, but Brunswick Marine continued to operate their old yard, known as the Small Yard, on Bay Street throughout the war. Brunswick Marine built 16 war vessels during World War II: nine tankers for the Navy, three
Army supply ships, and four tugs. Although nowhere near the volume of production at the Jones Yard, the company still swelled from 100 employees pre-war to nearly 700 employees at peak production. Adolph P. Jensen was one of the employees recruited to work at Brunswick Marine. Of Scandinavian descent, Jensen was born in Hoboken, New Jersey, and was working in Brooklyn, New York, when he received a letter recruiting him to Brunswick in 1942. As shipbuilding ramped up in the South, there was a huge need for experienced shipfitters, and Jensen came with the recommendation of the Superintendent of Brunswick Marine’s Hull Department.
The Coastal Georgia Historical Society recently received a collection of Jensen’s family records, with information about his life and time working for Brunswick Marine. The collection includes the letter that offered Jensen the job in Brunswick for an annual salary of $5,400. Due to Jensen’s position as construction superintendent, his wife was asked to sponsor, or christen, a ship. Included in the collection are items related to Mrs. Lucille Jensen’s role in launching USS YO-193, a type of tanker known as a “yard oiler,” on July 29, 1945.
The image shown (top) is of Mrs. Jensen (right) with Mrs. Julius Anderson, the co-sponsor and “matron of honor,” whose husband was the master shipwright at Brunswick Marine. Also shown (above) is the tanker as it slips into the water after being christened.
