PUBLISHER’S LETTER

An “Exceptional” Artist

S

t. Simons Island isn’t just a beach town. It’s also one big art gallery. The beauty of the island can be seen in many of the wonderful works our local artists create. I’ve had the privilege of getting to know some of our amazing local artists including Gogo Ferguson (who’s on this month’s cover), the late Jack Davis, Millie Wilcox, Peggy Everett, Jim Jones, Ken Wallin, and Glenda Cason, among others. One thing they all have in common, besides being incredibly talented, is a deep love for our little island. Through the years, whether the medium is clay, canvas, jewelry, metal, or photography, our artists have given us thousands of works that help beautify our houses and make them into homes.

ELEGANT ISLAND LIVING

Some adventurous folks go from being art admirers to picking up a paint brush themselves. There are numerous classes taught by artists that offer you a chance to get in touch with your inner Rembrandt. I actually took a painting class a few years back. It went about as well as the time I tried to take singing lessons or when my mom made me take piano lessons back in 7th grade. In all three instances, the instructors were honest enough to tell me that, while they always thought “anyone can learn” to play the piano, sing, or paint, there is always an exception – and I was the exception. In the case of my piano lessons, I didn’t have to quit, my piano teacher asked my mom NOT to enroll me the next year. Rhonda Hambright is an amazing singer and vocal coach. After my first private singing lesson, she offered to give me my money back. And when I took a two-day

painting class taught by Peggy Everett with 14 other artists, I tried to quit after the first day. Fortunately, Peggy let me! While I know I may not be able to create art, I can and DO appreciate art. I love going into Anderson Art Gallery to view the latest paintings and seeing new works by local artists at Glynn Visual Arts. I encourage every EIL reader to get out this month and visit the wonderful art galleries on the island. No exceptions!

RAGEOUS APPEAL , It s time to vote! Every October, in

observance of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the Southeast Georgia Health System Foundation holds its ARTrageous Bras fundraiser to benefit the Health System’s cancer care programs. This creativity for a good cause actually started in September when Health System team members and participants from the community working in teams or individually picked up plain, white bras to embellish using their imagination and whatever artistic theme inspired them. Throughout October, these themed bras are displayed on the Brunswick and Camden campuses of the Southeast Georgia Health System and available to view with a link online at wearethefoundation.org. Vote for your favorite bras with your wallet – votes are $1 each and you can vote for multiple entries. You can vote in the following ways: Votes can be accepted and received by the bra creator and then returned to the Foundation. Health Sys-

tem Team Members only can cast their votes at the Health System Guest Services Desks in Brunswick and Camden. Votes can be cast at the Foundation office: 2436 Parkwood Drive, Brunswick. Votes can be cast online using the gallery link that will be provided on October 1. Voting will end on October 31. The top ten vote receiving bras will be featured in a live auction to be held during a reception Historic Ritz Theatre in Downtown Brunswick on Friday, November 5 from 6-7:30 p.m. The remaining artist creations will be entered for bidding in a silent auction. ARTrageous Bras creators, friends, families, and community supporters are invited to attend. Based on COVID-19 safety protocol, plans may be subject to change for the silent and live auction. All proceeds benefit the Health System’s cancer care programs. Find out more by calling 912.466.3360 or visit wearethefoundation.org.

Making Luxury Living an Art

T

he nationwide real estate boom continues and the housing market in the Golden Isles remains strong. Housing inventory, especially in luxury markets, has been limited and Coastal Georgia has realized significant price increases due to the availability of properties. Now, more than ever, it is incredibly important to make sure you are working with a qualified agent that can effectively represent you in a real estate transaction. The team of Luxury Collection Specialists at Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices Hodnett Cooper Real Estate has been pleased to represent over 349 transaction sides through August of this year – totaling over $163 million in total sales volume. They specialize in representing luxury and unique properties including private homes, waterfront estates, equestrian properties, and residences with historical significance or unique architectural details. POLISHED PEYTON by Jennifer Daniel

F

all is absolutely my favorite time of year. Football and family gatherings are at the top of my list along with all of the holiday celebrations. Here are five tips to help practice good manners with the little people in your life so they are ready for the season.

Practice Makes Perfect catch them helping a friend or sibling with something, or for when they use extra good manners while running errands with you. Reward them with a special treat like letting them pick dessert one night. Positive Praise

Sit with Your Children at Mealtime

While I hope every family is eating together at least one night a week and being intentional with practicing good manners, we should eat with our children as much as possible. While cereal for breakfast on a busy school morning or a turkey sandwich for lunch as you head out the door for afternoon activities, they will model your manners. It’s the simple things, like using your napkin, not talking with food in your mouth, not allowing your children to interrupt each other. All of those things are witnessed by little ones while we eat.

Always use positive praise. “Sally, I love that you offered to help Ms. Perry with her grocery cart.” Praise them for the little things. They love this.

help too. You will be surprised how much reinforcement of your lessons by other people can really make them stick.

Enlist Others as Reinforcement

Create a List to Display

I believe most families encourage good manners. The only reason people look to me for etiquette guidance is because it’s always helpful for your children and grandchildren to hear the same “rules” expressed by someone other than you. Keep those close to you in the loop with the things you are currently working on with your little ones. They can

Once children are eight or nine, they really need to “own” what you are trying to teach. Ask them to help you make a list of four or five things that you want to work on as a family. Have them write it out and decorate it. Post their drawing on the refrigerator or in another prominent place. Seeing this sheet daily will be a helpful reminder.

Make it a Game

For young children, this can be fun. They can earn points for setting the table, for when you

STRIVING for More Live United. More Than a Mission. More Than a Goal. That’s the theme of the United Way of Coastal Georgia (UWCGA)’s 2021-22 Annual Campaign, which launched last month and will run through February 2022.

“In Coastal Georgia, UWCGA works to increase self-sufficiency for every person in our community through resources and programs related to health, education and income stability,” said Justin Callaway, President & CEO. “Through investment in and partnership with local agencies, we strive to deliver strategic solutions related to child/ youth readiness, stable environments, and workforce development. For 65 years, our organization has worked with local businesses, nonprofits, government, and civic- and faithbased groups, along with educators, health providers, senior citizens, young leaders, and other influencers to continue to build stronger communities in Glynn and McIntosh.”

United Way is able to accomplish its mission year after year thanks to generous individuals and organizations who show their support through their financial contributions during the Annual Campaign as well as the invaluable gift of their time and talents. This year, they aim to exceed the fundraising goal of $850,000. “Earlier this year, we expanded our service area to include Camden County, as well,” Callaway announced. “We look forward to providing the same level of service and leadership to our neighbors in Camden as has come to be expected in Glynn and McIntosh.” Although the UWCGA business operation will continue to be based in Brunswick, Callaway says the organization will have impact at the local level in all three counties, especially as they begin to fund programs

operated by Camden, Glynn, and McIntosh nonprofits. He states,“Our local United Way remains committed to providing relevant, impactful service throughout the Coastal

Georgia region.” More money raised means more impact and more people who can be assisted through UWCGA funded programs. To learn more about United Way of Coastal Georgia and the 2021-22 Annual Campaign, or to donate, visit uwcga.org.

The organization fills a critical need in our community and serves more than 3,600 youth annually. We thank the Davis Love Foundation for continuing to support the youth in Glynn County.” “The Boys and Girls Club fills an important need in our community with programs that span learning and literacy, empowering good citizenship and leading healthy and productive lives,” said RSM Classic Executive Director Mark Love who also serves on the Boys and Girls Club Board of Directors. “We hear and see the stories of lives changed by the organization

LET THE WATER FLOW This is the theme of the 2021 Fête for Haiti, the annual fundraiser to support St. William’s twin parish in Haiti. Presented by Helping Hugs, Inc., the October 23rd event features an outstanding meal catered by Tom Delaney, live and silent auctions. Money raised will finance medical care, infrastructure projects, education, and, most importantly, clean water. As a source of good health and the foundation of community development, clean water is a priority. Ann HArrell

Your home is more than a building or an address. It’s where you experience life, connection, and growth. That is why our agents find what they do so rewarding! Each month we are going to take you into the home of one of our agents. See what they love and value most about their homes and where they live.

we have friends over or at family celebrations, we tell funny stories around the table. At Christmas, my father-in-law, Wallace recites from memory the Christmas story from Luke. We watch all the UGA games and the back nine at Augusta on Sunday in the den. This is also where I exhale - watching my favorite TV programs.

Good neighbors and the tremendous oaks are what attracted my husband Wallace and me to Shaw’s Bounty. The oaks, God’s works of sculpture, inspire me! We have lived here for over twenty years, and we love that it is a quiet settled area yet convenient to everything, even an easy bike ride to the beach over back roads.

My house is full of things that are meaningful to me. My most cherished pieces are antiques and art passed down from my parents and the portraits of my daughters by my mother in law, Charlotte.

Wallace and I loved bringing up our daughters, Laura Ann and Elizabeth, here. They had lots of friends their age nearby who would play in our yards. When they were older, they would ride bikes to the beach or through bike trails to see friends in Devonwood and Wymberly. As empty nesters, we are concentrating on our careers, and it is a great place to come home. We often walk or bike the neighborhood in the evenings. It's relaxing to hear the cicadas and see herons around the neighborhood pond. The other day I saw one of the neighborhood children on a mud flat in the pond, like our girls liked to do.

To me a home is where you get inspired, relax, feel your best and make wonderful memories with family and friends. When I meet with my clients, I always ask what their goals are relative to real estate or what will make them happy? I am in the fun business of helping people fulfill their dreams, and I love doing it! Ann Harrell is an Associate Broker at DeLoach Sotheby’s International Realty. Ann’s work ethic and drive have earned her Top Producer status consistently every year since 1996. She has been ranked as a Top 10 Agent in the Golden Isles MLS for four years! She thrives in a competitive real estate market doing everything she possibly can to achieve her client's goals.

My favorite spaces at home tend to be around one of the dining tables or in the den, where the family gathers and life happens. When

World War II Posters: Artists Rally Support for the War Effort

D

uring World War II, many American artists contributed to the war effort by creating artwork for posters that would help galvanize public support for Federal programs, such as rationing and civilian defense. Two prominent illustrators, Frances O’Brien and Ernest Hamlin Baker, collaborated on a series of woodcut posters for the Putnam County Defense Council in New York. They signed the posters with a pseudonym combining letters of their first names, “Francerne.” O’Brien was known for her portraits of notable people, often used for the covers of The Saturday Review of Literature magazine. Baker, who had illustrated World War I posters, was working exclusively for Time magazine by 1939. He eventually illustrated more than 350 Time covers. The civilian defense theme of the “Francerne” poster shown here would have resonated with the residents of Coastal Georgia. Even before the attack on Pearl Harbor, there was growing concern that the Axis powers had developed long-range bombers that could cross the Atlantic Ocean. A civilian arm of the U.S. Army’s Ground Observer Corps was formed to

provide volunteer airplane spotters, trained to identify and report enemy aircraft. Thousands of observation posts manned by hundreds of thousands of volunteers were established along the East and West Coasts. Glynn County locations included Arco, the Brunswick Country Club, the King and Prince Hotel, and the Sea Island Administration Building.

This poster is one of seven acquired by the Coastal Georgia Historical Society for their World War II collection through a generous donation by the late Dr. Irwin R. Berman. His gift makes it possible to exhibit original posters on a rotating basis at the World War II Home Front Museum. The “Francerne” poster will be on display until the end of the year.
