Who’s the Boss?

hhhh … David went to bed and he thinks I’m sleeping in the shower. (My favorite cool spot!) But tonight, I saw that he left his iPad on the couch, so I snuck out to use it. This is it, MY turn to write the Publisher’s Letter! I’m Bear, the top dog at Elegant Island Living. David is my human. When people ask him what kind of dog I am, he laughs and says, “a Chihuahua,” but really, I’m a Newfoundland. David’s the best because we drive around in a convertible and he takes me and my brother Onyx, who he adopted from HSSCG, lots of places. We go to Gascoigne Park to see our friends and sniff the trees, go swimming under the Mackay River Bridge, and chase birds at the beach. It’s not all fun and games though, we have important business too.

At 6:00 a.m. I start the day by standing next to the bed and poking David with my nose. Then I stare at him until he gets up. Once he gets in the shower, the bed is MINE! Then we go out for breakfast. On a good day, Mr. Andy

or Mr. Jeff will sneak me some sausage from Palmer’s. Sometimes they both do – don’t tell! We go to the post office and the bank, and keep magazines stocked around the island. I inspect the warehouse and even meet the big truck that comes every month! When people see me in the car, they tell David, “I can’t believe he just sits there. My dog would never stay.” I don’t think they understand this is my job. Who else would make sure the magazine work gets done? Enjoy reading about my new friend Sidney’s adventures this month. Come over and say “hi” when you see me, Onyx, and David out and about. Because I will always be on the job!

Begin!

Hi! My name is Sidney and I love to travel! I’ve just arrived on St. Simons Island and I’m so excited for my adventure to begin. You see, while my humans have been coming here for years (they met at some place called Frat Beach), it’s my first visit ever! And can I tell you a secret? It’s also my first trip to the beach! On the way here, we drove over a bridge that looked like it had sails and they told me it’s where they got my name! This is going to be AWESOME!

She says there are lots of places to go: Redfern Village, The Shops on Market Street, and The Shops at Sea Island. Wow! I thought there was a lot right here by the Pier. When EIL was contacted by Tibi about Founder & Creative Director Amy Smilovic’s upcoming visit to the island and plans to shoot the line’s Fall 2021 collection at SCAD, we were thrilled to be offered the exclusive invitation to participate. But this rare opportunity speaks perfectly to a key element of the Tibi brand in 2021: accessibility. Some of you may only know Tibi as a store or NY designer label you see advertised in our pages or showcased during Fashion Week, or even as a mid-island shop where young women flock when visiting the island. You may not be aware that Tibi has local roots. Amy is the daughter of Island residents Ken and Judy Wallin and a graduate of Glynn Academy. Inspired by the local culture and textiles while living in Hong Kong, she founded Tibi there in 1997, before returning to the States a few years later and setting up a studio in a Soho loft. (Fun fact: you can see Amy’s studio, complete with some of her design sketches in the movie Devil Wears Prada.) Fashion insiders love Tibi’s relaxed and minimal designs, eye-catching prints, unexpected color combinations, and modern celebration 48

Today more than ever, Amy says, the designs are informed by the women who wear them. During the pandemic, Amy and Tibi Visual Styling Director Dione Davis took to Instagram as a way to reach out and engage with their customer base. It was a year without catwalks and they had a collection to sell. So, in a world of Zoom meetings and TikTok dance trends and cooking demonstrations, the pair launched Instagram Style Class, where they address followers’ requests for how to style what’s already in their closet or suggestions on how to pack for a 3 day trip. The sessions are popular because Amy and Dione are engaging, witty, and completely candid. Amy has a passion for showing women

how to express themselves and their personal aesthetic through their wardrobe and helping them to be more confident. She believes the best compliment a person can receive is “I love your style!” Because that embraces their whole persona, not the shoes, the jacket, or the elements of the outfit. In the Tibi Style Class and other social media engagement, Amy also offers guidance and business insight to entrepreneurs and aspiring designers. Such accessibility and approachability is rare and valuable. Dione appreciates the way Style Class let her reconnect on a different level,

As we stood chatting in The Outlet, Amy pulled up that first class, which launched, they realized, almost exactly a year before, on her phone, and they mused about how far the sessions have come. What began as off the cuff tips offered by Amy on Instagram stories evolved into something for which they’ve hired a filmmaker! Dione says they’re amazed by and grateful for the connection that the Style Classes have allowed them to make with Tibi followers and to see an influx of brand new customers. It was this desire for connection that brought Amy to town and to shoot the Fall 2021 campaign at SCAD. Amy explains, “We wanted to tell the story of our Fall 2021 collection in a location that made my team and me feel alive

opportunity to shoot in this setting, but to involve students in the creative fields in the process. Amy says, “After speaking with SCAD about the campaign, we came up with a terrific partnership. Our teams met for the first time in Savannah, and it felt like coming home.” After EIL met with Amy and Dione at the Tibi Outlet, the other members of the Tibi team were arriving for the next day’s shoot in Savannah. They graciously shared some exclusive behind-the-scenes photos with us as they styled the not yet released fall line. Their enthusiasm for the project was easy to see and their excitement contagious. After the shoot, Amy shared, “SCAD was a phenomenal experience. What started as the idea of shooting a fall campaign quickly morphed into a fully creative experience. It was incredibly inspiring to be around such young unbridled talent.” Keep an eye on Tibi’s social media accounts to see the campaign when it rolls out.

and styles, and placing orders for items not on the racks here or offered in different colors, Robin, Bonney, and a few other shoppers left with Tibi bags or purchased items arriving soon. Amy also got to enjoy some catch-up sessions with hometown friends. She says, “Every day I am more and more grateful to have grown up in a place like St. Simons. The balance of life and creativity has stayed with me. And I am so happy to be continue my relationship with my home by having part of our company located here.” Hopefully this visit strengthened that coastal connection even further.

Support foR the Squares Takes Root

n 1771, The Council of the Royal Colony of Georgia laid out the city of Brunswick utilizing the Oglethorpe Plan. This design, named after the colony’s founder, General James Oglethorpe, featured 14 large and small squares spaced evenly among residential and commercial land lots. These park-like areas were to be deeded to the people of the city in perpetuity, never to be sold or developed. Over the past 250 years, a number of the squares of Brunswick have been sold, encroached upon or developed for civic or private purposes. Many of the squares are still in use today as community gathering spots or parks. Yet others wait for the day when their true potential can be realized.

In 2005, a group of Old Town Brunswick homeowners began a mission to reclaim and beautify the district’s original colonial parks and squares in keeping with the intent of the city’s founders. Led by Julie Hunter Martin and LuAnn Whalen, Signature Squares of Brunswick, Inc., a non-profit preservation organization, was formed and soon grew in strength and numbers. Following plans drawn by founding member landscape architect Jerry Spencer, the organization began taking steps to transform neglected and underutilized spaces

into garden spots for the city. Work commenced in early 2006 with the replacement of the broken fountain in Hanover Square, repair of walkways, and replanting the garden areas. Today, Signature Squares of Brunswick remains a 501(c)(3) organization funded completely by grants and donations. It has no paid staff, and operates on 100% volunteer participation. Revitalization project funding is supplied by generous contributions from citizens, local businesses, garden clubs, and foundations; grants, strategic partnerships and in-kind services. 100% of all donations go toward restoration projects. Each renovation project involves a partner relationship with the City of Brunswick. Signature Squares’ work continues along the business corridor, as well as in residential park areas, and its mission has grown to include educating the public about the history of our city. They are dedicated to bringing the story of our modern colonial city to life by restoring its historic public green spaces in an environmentally responsible manner and sharing its rich legacy. labor is enjoyed by downtown visitors, shoppers, residents, and businesses. “The squares are an important asset to downtown Brunswick,” says Susan Bates, owner of Tipsy McSway’s Neighborhood Bar & Grill. “They are the hubs of the monthly First Friday events and are regularly used as community gathering places. We see it daily outside our windows.” Each of Brunswick’s 14 original squares in the Old Town Historic District has a story to tell, and every story plays an important part of the city’s narrative. Government offices and commercial businesses bordering squares in the downtown corridor shaped the cultural and economic destiny of our port city. Homes around the residential squares tell the stories

of the people who built the city and raised their families here. Intensive research into the architectural, horticultural and cultural heritage of the space precedes the preservation of each square. The relevance of each structure, past and present, and location of the square are all taken into consideration before any bench, brick, or shrub is installed. While many of the original squares have been fully restored, several still are in need of attention. We’re touching on the history and renovation of some of the Brunswick squares here to give you an idea of the legacy Signature Squares seeks to preserve. To delve deeper, we encourage you to visit signaturesquares.org. When the city of Brunswick was chartered and plans for its streets and squares were formalized,

the colony of Georgia was already 39 years old, and ties with Britain were still strong. This is reflected in many of the names, such as King and Queen Squares, named to honor Britain’s Royal rulers. These two squares were designed in four quadrants. Queen Square, home to one of the city’s most recognizable landmarks, Historic City Hall, is the only true square in Brunswick located within the downtown commercial district. Other smaller, so-called “pocket parks,” such as Jekyll and Machen Squares, were originally named “Place” and were not considered true squares until the names changed on city maps in the 1930s. Hanover Square was named for the house of Hanover, from which England’s rulers at that time, namely George III, descended. It is one of only two large squares in Old Town Brunswick that retains its original size and shape. Initially, Hanover Square was the hub of official city and county business. The county courthouse, jail and stockyards were located in the square until the late 19th century, when Brunswick citizens began to feel that the muddy, trampled stockyard and shabby wooden buildings did not properly represent their up-and-coming city. In 1882, the Ladies Park Association campaigned for the removal of the courthouse from the square and raised funds to purchase materials to beautify what they referred to as “Hanover Park.” The city drilled a deep artesian well in the square and topped it with an ornate fountain. This new fountain provided clean drinking

water for local citizens and created a tourist attraction for the times. In the late 19th-century, there was a popular practice for the healthconscious of “taking the waters.” This brought many people to Brunswick to drink the fountain’s therapeutic natural mineral water. In later years, the fountain fell into disrepair and several pieces were missing when Signature Squares of Brunswick took on its inaugural restoration project. The entire assembly was removed down to the ground, and a replacement in a classic Tall Crane design, chosen to most closely reflect the original 1884 fountain, was installed. The base bowl of the old fountain was saved and repurposed as the basin of the new Jekyll Square West fountain. Wright Square was named for Sir James Wright, the last colonial Governor of Georgia. Wright was known as a fair and well-respected administrator and held his office from 1760 until the end of the Revolutionary War. In 1952, Glynn County Middle School was built on the northern half of Wright Square. In 2009, a modern middle school was built to replace it in a different location. Three years later, a land swap between the City of Brunswick and the Board of Education for the northern half of Wright Square was finalized, providing the city the opportunity to re-connect the two halves of Wright Square into a fully intact 4-acre historic square with the removal of George Street. After the demolition of the school, the site was painstakingly excavated by archaeologist William Weeks, who had for years researched the possibility that a settlers’ burial ground might have

been beneath the square. Thirty-seven colonial grave sites were discovered although identities were lost with the passage of time and progress. The graves were recorded but left undisturbed and respectfully covered again by native soil. The first citizens of the city are now honored with a monument in the square. The origin of the name of Machen Place (now Square) isn’t as clear as others, and this northernmost square in Old Town wasn’t even included on the 1826 official map of the city. But during Brunswick’s period of growth and prosperity in the late 19th century, landmark structures were built adjacent to or near Machen Square and the space assumed its rightful status as an important part of the Newcastle Street downtown corridor. It once held a magnificent threestory National Bank of Brunswick building, designed in the same Richardson-Romanesque revival style as Historic City Hall. The Victorian masterpiece known as the Oglethorpe Hotel was completed in 1888 on the adjoining block. Also built nearby was the Grand Opera House. Sadly, all that remains of these structures are a substantially transformed Ritz Theatre and a walkway at the entrance to Machen Square West of engraved pink and white Italian marble tiles preserved from the Oglethorpe Hotel. Signature Squares now invites you to get in touch with the city’s roots through the Square Roots program. Square Roots is a newly developed community partnership dedicated to the preservation, restoration and broadened awareness of Brunswick’s public green spaces.

Square Roots member businesses create a funding resource that helps bring the story of our modern colonial city to life and to maintain the design intended by its founders in 1771: to promote health and wellbeing through unrestricted access to common green spaces. Restoring the historic squares set aside for public good by our colonial founders keeps our treasured cultural and environmental heritage intact. When we preserve the squares, we protect the quality of life that results from daily contact with nature. The squares are ideal for walking, strolling with children, visiting with a friend, bird watching, reading a book or simply relaxing. They belong to all of us, and all are welcome. Use for larger public or private events can be reserved through the City of Brunswick.

Like Father, Like Son

andall Jordan, more commonly known as RJ, knew early on that he would pursue a career in law. RJ grew up in Glynn County and credits his initial interest in law to two of his parents’ friends. “Mr. Russell Tuten was a congressman, and my parents took me to D.C. often to visit with him at the Capitol and see how government works in person,” says RJ. After learning how fascinated RJ was by the speeches and debates on the House floor, RJ’s dad told him that if he wanted to do that, he needed to be a lawyer. That advice stuck. RJ also spent a lot of time at the home of his best friend, Bob Killian. Bob’s dad, Billy Killian, was a lawyer, legislator, and later a Superior Court judge. RJ enjoyed his wit and “the clever ways he talked about almost anything.”

Chris Jordan, the oldest of RJ’s three sons, was born in Chapel Hill, NC, but grew up in Glynn County. Neither parent pushed any of the boys towards a particular career, but when Chris was growing up, the family joke was that he was cut out to be either a lawyer or a priest. As Chris got older, he realized that lawyers had to know how to speak and write, both of which interested him. Chris’ path went from Glynn Academy to Duke University, then to the Vanderbilt University School of Law. Both schools have special meaning to the family. Chris’ grandfather graduated from Vanderbilt, as did Chris’ mother, who later went to Duke for grad school. RJ also received his undergraduate degree from Duke. Chris says that while his school choices were “unimaginative,” they were “great experiences nonetheless.”

After law school, Chris joined a large firm in Atlanta and met his wife, Christy, through a mutual friend. Christy was a recent graduate of the University of Georgia School of Law and was working in Atlanta. Chris and Christy eventually moved to St. Simons Island so that Chris could practice with RJ. “My wife left her family and a great job to come down, so it was a big decision for us,” Chris notes, “but we’re extremely thankful to live where we live.” Chris joined RJ at The Jordan Firm, and Christy joined Southeast Georgia Health System’s legal team in Brunswick, where she now serves as the general counsel. In 2017, Chris joined HunterMaclean, a business law firm with offices in St. Simons Island and Savannah. A couple of years later, RJ dis

solved The Jordan Firm and moved to HunterMaclean as well. Both RJ and Chris are wellrespected litigators with a wealth of experience with torts, railroads, and other transportation matters. RJ acknowledges that he and Chris are very much alike in some ways. “We do really enjoy our work and routinely commit lots of time to our practices,” says RJ, “but some wonderful differences are Chris’ youth and superior IT skills. He stays current on frequently subtle changes in the law and in society that allow him to advise his clients effectively.” RJ leans on Chris for those insights. Chris is quick to praise RJ’s work ethic and great instincts, and says RJ is “preternaturally poised,” adding, “if people think we have professional similarities, that means I’m probably doing something right.” One potentially awkward transition from family to work was never an issue, though: what do you call your dad at work? “I’m not sure what it says about us,” says Chris, “but my brothers and I have actu-

ally been calling our dad ‘RJ’ for a really long time. It’s completely second nature to us. But, to be sure,” he quips, “it also comes in handy in court or on big conference calls.” Striking a work-life balance is a challenge for many, but when you work with family, the challenge is reality. The Jordans agree that their family keeps them in check. “Our families are quick to point out that lawyers talking about law is really boring. So, we’re encouraged to leave work at the office as much as we can,” says RJ. “Fortunately, Chris and I share a lot of the same interests, so finding a non-law subject to talk about is never, ever hard. In fact, it’s great. Chris is a very interesting and entertaining guy, and it’s just fun to have conversations with him

about almost anything. Rarely are those conversations tedious.” Chris chimes in that they enjoy “playing golf poorly together.” They also play a lot of music together, “at times competently!” Chris and RJ are both talented musicians and members of different bands: RJ is a drummer, and Chris plays piano and guitar. Chris admits that RJ is a better singer. They also spend a lot of time at the beach, which is especially fun now with Chris’ three kids in the mix. When asked what they have learned from each other, Chris says that the great advice RJ has given him over the years is too much to recount, but one of the best parts of his job is collaborating with RJ on strategy. “It is truly a gift,” says Chris. He bets even some of their close friends would be surprised how often they laugh at work. “RJ and I try to take our jobs seriously, but not necessarily ourselves or each other.” RJ commends Chris for being more attentive to detail than he is, as not being detail-oriented is dangerous in the law. Chris has made him more aware of such things, and RJ says that has made him a better lawyer, adding that he is “forever blessed to have Chris Jordan as my son regardless of his line of work.” RJ says their close collaboration has given them priceless insights into each other, and he has respect for Chris’ toughness, instincts, and judgment. Along those lines, a life lesson that RJ wants to pass on to Chris is to trust his instincts. That is often hard to do in the context of legal analysis and advice, because the law can seem rigid and emotionless. “But Chris is a good person and a smart person, so his instincts are usually reliable,” RJ says. “I’d advise Chris to use the law as his rulebook but to not be afraid to trust his gut.” From Chris’ perspective, litigation is inherently competitive, with each side trying as hard as they can to win. He compares RJ to Lebron in

that, when the game is on the line, he’d rather have the ball in his hands. Even in the competitive environment of law, though, RJ is a gentleman above all else. He has had great success conveying to judges and juries that he is, as Chris puts it, “the most reasonable person in the room, and thus the one worth listening to.” Chris explains that it works so well for RJ because it’s not an act, adding, “I hope my kids will treat people the way he does.” There is such value in learning your craft from the best in the business, but it is truly special when the best happens to be your own father. RJ has been fine-tuning his craft for forty-five years, defending some of the nation’s largest railroad companies and other corporations in high-stakes lawsuits. He has tried countless cases to jury verdicts. For fourteen of Chris’ eighteen years of practicing law, he has worked alongside RJ, gaining invaluable experience and direction. Chris is an aggressive and pragmatic litigator in his own right, but he expects to continue partnering with and learning from RJ. As he puts it, “RJ’s a machine, and I’m just trying to keep up with him.”

few years ago I attended a conference in Washington, DC. Soaking everything in, I had pages and pages of notes. Though I had been teaching etiquette for a long time, I’d been teaching in my small part of the world. In today’s fast-paced society, we connect with more people than we ever thought possible and it’s very easy to communicate with even those living hundreds of miles. This makes teaching etiquette tricky at times. One coun★ Holding the door for someone. ★ Looking people in the eye and smiling. ★ Not interrupting, unless it’s an emergency. ★ Saying “Please” and “Thank you."

try or culture may do something one way while another does it a different way. Both ways are considered correct. One morning I asked an instructor what I should do if I found myself in a situation at an event where I had no idea what behavior was correct. Though I know a lot about etiquette, it’s impossible for me to know everything in every situation especially with hundreds of people and many different cultures. There’s no “phone a friend” option. The instructor’s response: “Be kind. Be very kind.” ★ Leaving things better than you found them.

I was incredulous! I inquired, “Be kind? No, seriously. What would I do?” The instructor replied, “Be kind. It’s universal.” I went back to my seat totally unsatisfied with that answer, and I could not stop thinking about it. Good manners are, in fact, little kindnesses that show compassion, respect, friendship and care. And in today’s world, I can’t think of many things we need more. So this month, I’m listing some of my favorite “good manners” that are merely, when you really think about it, small acts of kindness. ★ Greeting people by name.

★ Sending thank you notes.

★ Knocking before entering a room.

★ Complimenting a friend.

★ Introducing yourself.

★ Helping a stranger.

★ Returning items after you borrow them.

★ Saying “Congratulations!”

★ Passing the bread basket before you take a piece.

★ Learning to say, “I’m sorry.”

★ Leaving a good tip.

★ Letting someone else go first.

★ Refusing to gossip.

★ Sharing. ★ Not trying to steal the spotlight. ★ Cleaning up after yourself.

★ Clearing the table.

Spreading a little kindness is something we can all do and behavior we can model for our children and grandchildren. Modeling kindness is teaching good manners. See?! You’re a teacher and didn’t even know it!

Neighbors Helping Neighbors In this issue of Elegant Island Living, the Davis Love Foundation (DLF) continues its partner and charity spotlight with a focus on food insecurity and on those working in the service and hospitality industries.

t’s no secret that Golden Isles resident and professional golfer Davis Love III is a barbeque aficionado and that he enjoys sharing his passion with others. It’s not uncommon to find Davis behind a smoker at home, around the community or, very likely, at Southern Soul Barbeque. So, it’s natural that he has an immense appreciation for those in the food service and hospitality industry and also that one focus of his Foundation is food security for children and families The impact of 2020 on the service and hospitality industry and those in our community facing food insecurity was severe. With proceeds from The RSM Classic which are generated by sponsors and individual and corporate partners, the Foundation was able to support nonprofits serving these needs. “Our community has a strong tradition of helping each other in times of need,” said Love. “We saw it in the aftermath of Hurricanes Matthew and Irma. We saw it during the pandemic. And, we see it every day in so many ways.” For example, Southern Soul Barbeque owners Griffin Bufkin and Harrison Sapp felt the love of the community when their restaurant burned in 2010. This outpouring of community support planted the seed for The Firebox Initiative, a 501(c)(3) founded by restaurant

PRIZES AWARDED TO YOUNG PLAYWRIGHTS AND POETS The Eugenia Price/Joyce Blackburn Charitable Fund of the Communities of Coastal Georgia Foundation recently presented the Young Playwrights and Poets Showcase at the Historic Ritz Theatre. The winning poets, Amyah Mack (9th grade, Glynn Academy, Freedom from Covid), Alliyah Stallworth (10th grade Brunswick High School, Freedom, Oh Freedom), Lisbel Ayala (11th grade, Glynn Academy, Now Go Free), and Lily Seemann (12th grade, Glynn Academy, Good Girls Fight Back) shared their poems and received a cash prize of $250 each. Brunswick High Production Company performed the

winning play, A Game of Witches and Rubies, under the direction of Lucy Bryson, and winning playwrights Amelia McGlaughlin and Elizabeth Temple, 7th graders at Frederica Academy, shared the $500 cash prize. The Young Playwrights and Poets Awards are coordinated by Golden Isles Arts & Humanities. Fund advisor Eileen Humphlett is pictured with the winners. MORE COMMUNITY CITRUS ORCHARDS PLANTED Keep Golden Isles Beautiful has secured grants and donations for a “patchwork of edible orchards” across the City of Brunswick. Citrus groves (orange and grapefruit) are planted in heavily pedestrian traveled public spaces, and when mature, the resulting fruit is available for passersby to enjoy a healthy snack. Community partner Coastal Greenery sources, secures and installs the citrus trees while the city’s public works staff waters them. The most recent orchards at Perry Park, David Griffin Park, Abe Brown Park and Goodyear Park, made possible by a Keep America Beautiful/UPS tree planting grant, were symbolically unveiled with Mayor Cornell Harvey and City Manager Regina McDuffie present at the celebration of the new Orange Square location. They join previous installations at the Howard Coffin Park walking track and Ringel Park, funded by a Keep Georgia Beautiful Foundation grant and BB&T (now Truist), donation respectively.

PADDLING WITH PURPOSE “I’d cross the ocean for you!” It seems a hyperbolic cliche until it isn’t. Charlotte Snyder is a 17 year-old Cystic Fibrosis warrior and member of Brunswick’s St. Mark’s Episcopal Church family. Also part of that family are Fr. Alan+ Akridge, his son Harrison, and crew member Steve Crowder. On June 27, they’ll join 200 other paddlers for the Crossing for a Cure. This long-distance endurance paddle challenge and international championship takes

participants 80 miles across the Gulf Stream from Bimini, Bahamas back to Lake Worth, Florida. Fr. Alan+ and Harrison paddled in the 2019 Crossing, raising over $10,000 for CF and cancer. SCHERNECK TO RETIRE Michael D. Scherneck, president and chief executive officer, has announced he will retire from Southeast Georgia Health System in early 2022. COMMUNITY JUBILEE SCHEDULED FOR JULY Keep Golden Isles Beautiful’s annual Community Jubilee at The TreeBar at Bennie’s Red Barn on St. Simons Island is a toe tapping, fun fundraising event with live music by Backbeat Boulevard, upcycled art silent auction items, big ticket live auction items and a super Southern BBQ buffet.

This year’s fundraiser has been rescheduled to Sunday, July 18th, from 5-8:00 p.m., so mark your calendar for an evening of fun! THE WEEK OF THE 15TH ANNUAL TABBY & TILLANDSIA GARDEN WALK WAS A BUSY ONE FOR THE CASSINA GARDEN CLUB. Launching a Local Tradition: The Sunshine Festival

he first Sunshine Festival on St. Simons Island was held in 1955, and was sponsored by the St. Simons Jaycees as a fundraising event. Unlike recent years, the Festival took place in June rather than over the 4th of July holiday. There was no fireworks display, but the organizers packed three days with activities full of music, dancing, contests, a raffle, military displays, and even a visit by Miss America! Thursday and Friday of the first festival featured a Little League game, sailboat races, and water skiing in the Frederica River. Several events planned for Saturday were cancelled due to rain and high winds, including the demonstration of a helium-inflated balloon used by the Navy at Glynco for airship training. But the Festival went on, with the Hunter Air Force Base band filling in by supplying music for an impromptu jitterbug contest. Later in the day, a band from Camp (now Fort) Stewart presented a concert on the Casino lawn.

Perhaps most interesting to the modern audience was the enforcement of a “skinclad” order during daylight hours. According to the Brunswick News, this required that “only persons wearing shorts

or bathing attire will be allowed in the pier section of the island.” Members of the Jaycees and local high school club, Pirates of the Spanish Main, were assigned to patrol the Pier Village and levy a fine on anyone not complying with the order. Proceeds from these “arrests,” as well as other fundraising activities like carnival games, were to be used for civic improvements. The culmination of the Festival was a street dance featuring a twelve-piece string band from Waycross, the Palmetto Band. At 10:30 p.m., Miss America 1955, Lee Meriwether from California, pulled the winning raffle ticket in a random drawing for a free boat, motor, and trailer. This month’s image shows Lee Meriwether with (left to right) St. Simons Jaycees Jack Jenkins, Lamar Davis, and Joe Bradford. Also shown is the Army band from Camp Stewart. These photographs are preserved in a Jaycees scrapbook generously donated to the Society by Bill Strother.
