PUBLISHER’S LETTER

An Island Thanksgiving

A

nyone who has lived on St. Simons Island for more than a year knows about the “Christmas lights house” in Sea Palms. Since the early 80s, Wally Spencer, a 93 year-old World War II Navy Veteran, has been putting up Christmas lights and decorations in his yard to the delight of his Shore Rush Drive neighbors and countless others who pass by. Over the years, the display has grown from a few Christmas lights and decorations to a holiday extravaganza that would make Clark Griswold in Christmas Vacation green with envy. Every year, starting on Thanksgiving night and continuing through December, hundreds of families drive slowly by the Spencer house to view the magnificent cornucopia of colorful lights. It’s even become a stop for the Christmas lights trolley tours. Last month, Wally had an accident and was in the hospital for over two weeks, enduring three separate surgeries. Since Wally and his lovely wife, Urania, always like to have the lights and decorations up by Thanksgiving, their daughter Judy reached out on social media to see if

folks in the community would be willing to help pitch in. According to Judy, the response has been overwhelming! Judy said of the outpouring of support, “I can’t even tell you how overflowing my heart is. It puts tears in my eyes seeing how much joy my Dad has given to this

community!” Many individuals and companies alike have heeded the call to make sure no Grinch steals Christmas from this wonderful Santa’s helper! If you would like to help Wally and the Spencer family with the holiday display that we all enjoy so much every year, please email us at elegantislandliving@comcast.net and we’ll forward your name and number to Judy. Thanksgiving is a time for giving thanks, and we as a community want to thank Wally for his service and inspiration.

n November 12-18, the Golden Isles will welcome The RSM Classic, an Official Event of the PGA TOUR, hosted by Davis Love III, for its ninth consecutive year. Each year this tournament gets bigger and better, with the Davis Love Foundation and RSM US LLP continually looking for ways to expand their opportunities to give back to the community. To date, their efforts have been incredibly successful. Proceeds donated to children and family charities through The RSM Classic will exceed $10 million by the end of the 2018 event. Recently, Elegant Island Living had the opportunity to sit down with tournament host Davis Love III and Andy Bosman, CMO, and Bill Gorman, COO, of title sponsor RSM US LLP, to discuss their exciting announcement about the expansion of the Birdies Fore Love charitable giving platform. The annual RSM employee giving challenge will now include an on-course birdie competition for the PGA TOUR players. For a full list of participating charities, visit rsmclassic.com/charity/friends-of-dlf/ To give a small illustration of the impact of the charitable giving that takes place here thanks to The RSM Classic, the Davis Love Foundation, in partnership with Rich Products, recently presented a check for $30,000 to the Glynn County Schools athletics department representing a portion of the funds raised from last year’s tournament. Mark Love, the tournament’s Executive Director, explained “We just wanted to try to do it to help the kids in our community and the athletic programs.” Glynn County Athletic Director Steve Waters says that the support provided is vital to helping the athletic department meet the needs of its students. That money benefits more than 2,000 student athletes and over 113 athletic teams in the Glynn County School System. And just think, that’s only ONE of the many organizations that receive funds from The RSM Classic through the Davis Love Foundation. Imagine how the ripples spread from these donations. The RSM Classic will open to the public on Wednesday, November 14 with free admission

for Community Day, but there are some additional tournament related events happening off-site on Tuesday, November 13 that you may want to attend. On Tuesday evening at 5:00 p.m., the PGA TOUR Wives take on their pro golfer husbands in a friendly, yet spirited, game of Wiffle Ball at the Frederica Academy ballfield on St. Simons Island. Each team includes students from Altama Elementary School who have earned a playing spot through the school’s “Positive Behavior Initiative and Support” program. Admission to the game is free and if you’ve never been out to see the fun, we encourage you to attend. It’s always entertaining and proceeds benefit Blessings in a Backpack, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that provides food on the weekends to elementary

school children who might otherwise go hungry. This year at the game, the Davis Love Foundation will hold a drawing for 2 VIP tickets to the Jon Pardi concert on Saturday night. You must be present to win. For a more upscale affair Tuesday evening, head to the Mizner Ballroom at The Cloister on Sea Island at 6:00 p.m. for the 8th annual Meet the RSM Pros cocktail party presented by the St. Simons Island Rotary. Here, guests have the opportunity to mix and mingle with top professional golfers over cocktails and heavy hors d’oeuvres. The highlight of the evening is an informal press conference interviewing the participating golfers and the always entertaining Q&A session that follows. Tickets for the Meet the RSM Pros event are $75 per person and include one free good-any-one-day ticket

to the golf tournament. Proceeds from the event will benefit more than a dozen children’s charities in Glynn County. On Wednesday, tournament gates open at approximately 7:00 a.m. Take advantage of the free admission on Community Day and come watch the Yamaha Pro-Am Event which will be held on Seaside and Plantation Courses or bring the kids out to experience the Youth Golf Zone sponsored by Southeast Georgia Health System at 3:00 p.m. This is where kids can meet PGA TOUR Players at the Sea Island Golf Performance Center Practice Putting Green to learn more about the game and have a little fun. Round One of tournament play begins Thursday on Seaside and Plantation courses. Gates open at approximately 9:00 a.m. Tee times to be announced. Play continues on these courses for Round Two on Friday. But after the golf is over on Friday, there’s more fun to be had! You’ll want to head down to the Village for Taste of the Golden Isles. The theme for this year’s event is MORE! A true treat for the tastebuds, this epicurean event will feature more food being served up by more local standout chefs and eateries from St. Simons Island, Jekyll Island, and Brunswick. Enjoy one-of-a-kind tastings and scrumptious concoctions created by our culinary experts and spirit slingers. The Pine Box Dwellers will bring their own unique blend of swamp rock bluegrass-Americana to the mix for a fabulous evening overlooking the ocean under the stars at the St. Simons Island Casino grounds. Taste of the Golden Isles takes place from 6:00-8:00 p.m. Tickets are $70 and

include one Friday grounds ticket to attend The RSM Classic. You must be 21 or older to purchase and you must have your ticket at the event to ensure admission. Proceeds from this event benefit Hospice of the Golden Isles. On Saturday, tournament patrons and locals have the chance to head over to nearby Jekyll Island to participate in an exciting new tournament event: The RSM Classic Charity Bike Ride presented by Chick-Fil-A. Begin your day bright and early with either a 14.5 or 29 mile route (space permitting) to make your journey on the bike paths around the beautiful natural scenery of the island. Every participant will receive a ride t-shirt, a Chick-Fil-A biscuit, beverages via Coca-Cola, and two good-anyone-day tickets to the golf tournament. Packet pick-ups are Friday from 4:00-6:00 p.m. and Saturday from 6:00-8:00 a.m. before the race begins at 8:30 a.m. Registration after November 1 is $50 per rider or $60 on the day of the ride (space permitting). Register at rsmclassic. com/home/bike-ride. Appreciation Day as well, so all military service men and women, retirees, and veterans are encouraged to come out and enjoy the day at The RSM Classic. As their salute to all men and women who serve and have served in the United States armed forces, The RSM Classic offers special ticket pricing and an exclusive hospitality venue with premium golf viewing, complimentary food and non-alcoholic beverages. If you are a current active duty, military reserve, or National Guard service member, or are a military retiree, you can receive up to two complimentary tickets for each day of the tournament (Thursday-Sunday). Military veterans can receive up to two discounted tickets ($15 per ticket) for each day of the tournament (Thursday-Sunday). To take advantage of the special ticket pricing, visit The RSM Classic website and complete the military verification. All fans attending The RSM Classic on Saturday can also help raise valuable funds for The Folds of Honor Foundation while testing their golf skills and possibly winning $1 Million by participating in The Folds of Honor Million Dollar Challenge, presented by Bridgestone. Participants will compete in a “Closest to the Pin” contest with a select number of finalists qualifying for a one-shot Challenge Round immediately following the third round of The RSM Classic. The finalist who hits their shot

closest to the pin will win a Grand Prize Package and a Hole-in-One is worth $1 Million. C’mon and take a swing! On Saturday night, November 17, it will be the reigning CMA New Artist of the Year, Jon Pardi, taking center stage at the RSM Classic Concert sponsored by Southeast Georgia Health System. Considered by many to be a “throwback,” Pardi offers up songs that have led to comparisons with George Strait and Dwight Yoakam rather than glossy pop country. The singerRSM Concert Headliner & CMA songwriter made his debut New Artist of the in 2014 with Write You a Year Jon Pardi Song, which featured the rollicking hit “Up All Night.” His second album, California Sunrise, firmly cemented him as a popular touring act with songs that showcase his strong, masculine voice and musical artistry while blending themes of sexy romance, Western sensibilities, and working class ethic. Pardi says, “It’s all about living and learning.” Not only does he take that to heart, he shares that in his music as well. The concert begins at 7:30 p.m. and the venue will once again be the McKinnon St. Simons Airport. All seats are lawn seating general admission. Tickets for the concert are

$40 for adults or $30 for youth ages 17 and under. Combination tickets that include a Saturday grounds ticket for the golf tournament and the concert are available for $50. On Sunday, November 18, the final round of play for the tournament takes place on the Seaside Course. Gates open at approximately 9:00 a.m. Take in the beauty of the grounds and walk with the golfers, or, if your company has taken advantage of the tournament’s excellent hospitality packages, grab a seat in the Oaks Terrace or the Skybox Club to see the remaining golfers finish the day. The past few years have provided some last-minute showdowns and surprises which have made for exciting golf! The Trophy Presentation will take place on the 18th green immediately following the completion of play. For more detailed information about The RSM Classic and to purchase tickets to the tournament and/or any of the events or to inquire about hospitality packages, visit rsmclassic.com. It’s one of the most exciting times of the year on the island, and we hope to see you out at Seaside or some of the other events!

It just feels different here. There’s a sense of openness you won’t find under our stately tree canopies and there’s a calm stillness that you don’t get where the waves crash against the shore. Here, the marshes envelop you in rich shades of gold and green with blue sky overhead. Herons and egrets can be spotted on posts and in the waving grasses. As you walk, tiny crabs scurry everywhere. The sun sparkles on the surface of the winding creek. If you grew up on St. Simons Island, there’s a good chance you know this property well. For decades, Village Creek Landing has been welcoming people to enjoy the splendor of the Golden Isles by using its marina and boat ramp or visiting the current event venue and earlier restaurants there that hosted countless celebrations over the years. Once the site of Cusie’s Fish Camp, Village Creek Landing is a peninsula located at the end of South Harrington Road off of Frederica Road midisland. The spot provides panoramic views over the Marshes of Glynn of Sea Island, Little St. Simons Island, and St. Simons Island. (continues)

While the Gowens stress there are no plans for development or changing the traditional use of the property, they are updating the structures there. They plan on installing a wrap-around deck and decking the area to the gazebo. The iconic wooden gazebo will be repaired and new stairs installed. All this to make the venue safer and more attractive as a place for celebration and to watch the sunsets. nce November arrives, the Golden Isles becomes a treasure trove of holiday events. Because we want to make sure you never miss a thing, the EIL Elf dons her hat and shares from her calendar of holiday markets, Santa sightings, and other seasonal delights. Here’s what we know is coming so far. We’ll be updating our online calendar as we learn of more holiday events and share via social media, so keep an eye out from that first Christmas tree lighting to Santa’s final “ho, ho, ho” as he makes his rounds on Christmas Eve. Confections and Concoctions is the theme of the Cassina Garden Club’s Annual Christmas Bake Sale at the Tabby Cabins located at Gascoigne Bluff on St. Simons Island. On December 1, the cabins will be open for tours from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. and the club will host its sale during those hours. The bake sale is open to the public, and everyone is invited to stop by and purchase some homemade taste treats, jellies and jams, cakes, pies, and cookies. If you’re lucky, you might even get your hands on a delightful and decadent Yule log! Since it’s “the Best Bake Sale in the Southeast,” you don’t want to miss your chance to drop by and pick up some deliciousness! (continues)

peration Christmas Child (OCC) is a holiday ministry supported by Samaritan’s Purse, a non-denominational Christian organization. This year, they’re celebrating 25 years of this Christmas ministry! Since 1993, Samaritan’s Purse has distributed over 157 million shoebox gifts to children in more than 160 countries or territories around the world. OCC is the world’s largest Christmas project of this kind. This year, they hope to collect enough shoebox gifts to reach another 11 million children.

National Collection Week is November 12-19 and Lord of Life Lutheran Church at 2801 Frederica Road on St. Simons Island is serving as a Central Drop-off once again this year. Grab an empty shoebox from your closet or pick one up from Lord of Life and pack it with items specified for a girl or boy, ages 2-4, ages 5-9 or ages 10-14. They suggest items like hair brushes, soap and washcloths, toothbrushes,

toys, games, puzzles, books, stuffed animals, bubbles, jump ropes, balls, flip flops or shoes, pencils and notebook paper, markers or crayons, socks, hats, pajamas, shirts, etc. Please do NOT pack toothpaste or candy in the shoeboxes. The church will be open for anyone to drop off shoeboxes during the following hours: Monday-Friday (11/13-17) 9:30-11:30am and 5-7pm; Saturday (11/18) 9-11am and 2-4pm; Sunday (11/19) 12-2pm and 4-7pm; and Monday (11/20) 9:3011:30am. n Saturday morning, December 8, the jingles you hear on Jekyll Island won’t be reindeer on the rooftops, they’ll be runners hitting the road in the 7th annual CASA Jingle All the Way 5K and One Mile Fun Run. Proceeds from this holiday-themed run with awards for top finishers, team spirit, best costume, etc. benefit CASA Glynn and CASA Camden and their hundreds of volunteers who support Southeast Georgia children who are in foster care programs. In Glynn and Camden County there are approximately 200250 abused and neglected children in foster care at any given time because they are unable to live safely at home. The CASA volunteers watch over and advocate for these children to make sure they move quickly through the system and they are placed in a safe, permanent home. For many children, the CASA volunteer may be the only constant adult presence during this process. Supporting CASA’s work and allowing them to help others have a happy holiday would be a welcome gift. To register for the run, go to active.com. You won’t find the reindeer pulling Santa on the sleigh as he makes early rounds on Christmas Eve either, because he’ll be riding atop ol’ Engine 32. The St. Simons Civinettes and members of the Glynn County Volunteer Fire Department are as busy as the elves at the North Pole making preparations to escort Santa Claus on his annual Christmas Eve journey around St. Simons Island on the antique red fire truck. For more than 70 years, adults and children have been flocking to the various points where Santa stops to take last minute

requests from children and hand out stockings to the little ones. Whether you come out just to wave to Santa on the lighted truck or have little ones who want to make their last pleas to be included on the “nice” list, be sure to join in this beloved island Christmas tradition. The EIL elves will be posting information about the location of the stops and estimated times of arrival on Christmas Eve, so stay in touch with us via social media. Make your own holiday tour around St. Simons Island by hopping aboard a trolley for a Christmas lights tour. The Fendig Family began the Christmas Tour of Lights tradition on Lighthouse Trolleys and thousands have joined them each year to celebrate our community and the lights and sounds of Christmas. Sing along with Christmas carols during the 90-minute tour and bring your cameras to snap pictures of the beautifully decorated houses in the various island neighborhoods. There’s even a surprise stop with Santa Claus! Two tours are scheduled nightly from December 13-24. Reservations are required, and private bookings are also accepted; visit lighthousetrolleys.com. Saint Simons Colonial Island Trolley Tours also offers nightly Christmas lights tours during the season, for their information, visit colonialtrolley.com. LET’S GO TO THE MOVIES

O

n Sunday, November 11, sixtyfive young musicians led by conductor Jorgé Peña will welcome you to an afternoon at the movies, but you won’t be at the theater. Experience the world of the silver screen through a recital of popular movie melodies in the opulent setting of the Mizner Ballroom at The Cloister on Sea Island. The concert will take place 5:00 p.m. with a cocktail reception beginning at 4:00 p.m. Pianist Christopher Smith will entertain guests at the reception. In addition to its regular repertoire of classical pieces, GIYO members enjoy playing modern pieces that are familiar and loved by the audience. This fall recital will have the full orchestra playing themes from Oklahoma, James Bond, the Magnificent Seven, Showboat, the Way We Were and others. Long-time GIYO supporter and friend, Jim Bishop and A.W. “Bill” Jones III are the honorary chairs. 58

ELEGANT ISLAND LIVING

The recital supports two important summer music experiences for local musicians, one for high school students that takes place at the College of Coastal Georgia and one for younger students that takes place at Frederica Academy. Last summer nearly 100 young people took part in a week-long CCGA Summer Music Camp at the College of Coastal Georgia and another 100 at the Federica camp. Taught by 20 professional musicians, students had intensive daily private lessons, ensemble coaching, section practice and full orchestra rehearsal. All proceeds from the November recital will be used strictly to fund next year’s summer music camps. Students in the Golden Isles Youth Orchestra take music lessons, rehearse weekly in the orchestra and perform two public concerts per year, the first on December 18 and the second in May. A younger group of 31 students play in the Symphonette, a training group for

the orchestra. An introductory program of violin entitled “String-On!” is being offered to all Glynn County 5th graders this year. Violin classes are offered in several area public schools as well and The Golden Isles Youth Orchestra Ensemble provides music at many community events. It’s important to note that 33% of GIYO musicians come from low-income families and100% of participants graduate from high school and continue their education. This demonstrates the lasting legacy of community support. Board members Barbara Sullivan and Jane Thau, along with a committee of volunteers, are chairing this event. Please contact Barbara at 912.434.9344 with any questions or for more information. Tickets are $125 per person. To purchase, send a check made out to the Golden Isles Youth Orchestra (GIYO) to PO Box 603, Brunswick, GA 31521.

ISLAND IMPRESSIONS

how pumpkin spice snuck into Every. Single. Food. In. The. Store. And I don’t get it. I mean, I like pumpkin pie as much as the next guy. At Thanksgiving. But now, when we hit Septem-

Social media mocks Southern autumn with its assertions that the first day of fall in the South means absolutely nothing.

ber, it’s pumpkin spice all day, every day, until the fat turkey sings.

We can try to use our orange and gold harvest decorations and cornucopias to set the scene, but it can’t really get us all the way there. This is probably why pumpkin spice has become such a thing. Someone figured out it’s what fall tastes like. And apparently, we can’t get enough of it. It moved from coffee, to beer, and from there it made its way into everything. It’s the lifeblood of the lost season. As we shift from summer to winter, we create fall with each little explosion of flavor in our mouths. If there is another flavor that so encompasses and summarizes a season, I can’t think of it. Sure, we have seasonal foods in every part of the country, but pumpkin spice is now the official flavor of fall.

BY FR. TOM PURDY, RECTOR OF CHRIST CHURCH

PUMPKIN SPICE INVASION

I

f you’re like me, you might be a bit concerned that pumpkin spice is some sort of bioengineered virus produced by one our nation’s most powerful enemies. I know biological warfare is a real and present danger, but I’m starting to think that taste-ological warfare might be a thing too. This fall I have been assaulted, more than ever, by the seemingly contagious spread of pumpkin spice. While it used to be limited to Starbucks, it has taken over local grocery stores. The endcap of every aisle at a local grocery store seemed to bear this affliction during a recent shopping trip: pumpkin spice PopTarts, pumpkin spice tea, pumpkin spice oatmeal, pumpkin spice crackers, pumpkin spice EVERYTHING. It was like some sort of Twilight Zone experience. It was as though some-

It occurs to me that this might be a factor of what fall is, or in our case, isn’t. There are a lot of places in our country where the season isn’t multicolored leaves, cool breezes, and a legitimate reason to wear vests. I grew up in a region that experienced fall, and when it comes to the Golden Isles, we ain’t got it. Our autumn is a fair approximation, but it’s not the real thing. We don’t have big piles of crunchy leaves to jump in or frost in the mornings shortly after school starts back up. We don’t have nearly as many days that just beg for chili and mulled cider. Instead we get lovebugs, more hot weather, and the return of sand gnats. As I’ve written before, I’m not fan of winter up north. I can’t stand the prolonged gray of the winter months. But fall is special, and I miss it terribly. Fall is the last, best show that nature has before the dullness of the northern freeze. That’s probably why it’s so endearing. It’s the last explosion of beauty before winter challenges our ability to endure hardship and suffering. Which is why everyone loves fall, even if it isn’t “our thing” in the South.

So maybe pumpkin spice isn’t an engineered attempt to take over the world, and it’s likely not malicious, but it’s pervasive nonetheless. There is no escaping it. And that’s not all bad, I suppose. I’ve avoided pumpkin spice so far, but my willpower is weakening. Maybe I’ll have to get my fall fix like so many other folks. But what to choose? The pumpkin spice latte is a bit on the nose, I think. Maybe it’s time for turkey-flavored ice cream. That could be the next big thing.

HOLIDAY BEDLAM Thursday, December 6, come out to Mullet Bay for Operation Bed Spread’s Holiday BEDlam celebration and fundraiser. The party starts at 5:00 p.m. and continues until 8:00 p.m. with live music by Backbeat Boulevard and Happy Hour prices at the bar. Donation $25 includes food and entry into the night’s raffle. This nonprofit organization that provides beds for children in need in our community is close to delivering their 850th bed. Let’s help them keep the momentum going and maybe make the holidays even more special for

some local children. Whether their dreams are visions of sugar plums or presents from Santa, they’re sure to be sweeter when sleeping in their own bed.

JOIN THE CRUSADE! On November 30, The King and Prince Beach & Golf Resort will be the site of Crusaders Bash, St. Francis Xavier Catholic School’s biggest annual fun-

draiser. Enjoy dinner accompanied by the sounds of jazz ensemble Tonic Blue. Bid on unique items in the silent auction and/or take home a bottle or two from a special wine pull. Tickets are $100 ($75 if purchased before November 1). Silent auction donations are being accepted and sponsorships are available. Financial contributions from the community are heavily relied upon by the school to bridge the gap between tuition and operating budget, as tuition and fees cover only about 75% of the actual cost of educating our children. Contributions also finance capital improvements, increase financial aid, enhance technology, improve curriculum, and support salary for faculty and staff. For more information, contact Stephanie D’Amico at 912.399.9296 or Amanda Murphy at 502.488.4545.

Local Memorial to a Global Conflict

T

his year on Veterans Day, we celebrate a special anniversary. One hundred years ago on November 11 in Compiègne, France, the armistice was signed that brought an end to World War I. The United States stayed out of this massive conflict for almost three years. Once America entered the war in April 1917, the State of Georgia became heavily involved. Many training camps were

scattered around the state, and over 100,000 men and women from Georgia participated in the war effort. After the war, thousands of memorials were erected around the world, including a significant one in Brunswick: Memorial Hall at Glynn Academy. Dedicated on Armistice Day (the original name for Veterans Day) in 1923, the building honored local veterans of World

War I. It was designed by Savannah architect, Henrik Wallin, who was reportedly inspired by the Library of Louvain in Belgium, a university library burned by the German army in 1914. This month’s image shows an early postcard of Glynn Academy’s Memorial Hall, now known as the Glynn Academy Building.

Our monthly images on this page are from the vast archives of the Coastal Georgia Historical Society. The Society’s mission includes the “administration, restoration and maintenance of historic facilities and resources … preserved as a living part of the historical and cultural foundations of our coastal community.” Society facilities include the St. Simons Lighthouse and Museum, the A.W. Jones Heritage Center, and the Historic Coast Guard Station.
