National Lampoon’s Hurricane Vacation “Granted: I am an inmate of a mental hospital; my keeper is watching me, he never lets me out of his sight; there’s a peephole in the door, and my keeper’s eye is the shade of brown that can never see through a blue-eyed type like me.” – Günter Grass, The Tin Drum “All this happened, more or less.” – Kurt Vonnegut, Slaughterhouse-Five “Then there was the bad weather.” – Ernest Hemingway, Moveable Feast

Call me Ishmael. Like most St. Simons residents, my parents and I evacuated the island Thursday before Hurricane Matthew arrived. Unlike most St. Simons residents, I didn’t bother to start looking online for hotels until 3:00 p.m. on Thursday. The closest pet-friendly hotel I could find was in Greenville, SC which is 6 hours away. So, at 5:00 p.m. Thursday, we headed off the island with three adults and three dogs on the first “family vacation” I’ve been on since 1978. But in all seriousness, we as a community were very fortunate to come out of this event mostly unscathed. It may take a little while to get back to normal, but considering what could have happened, we are very lucky indeed! I want to say a special thank you to my good buddy, Andy Jones, who was out clearing trees off of Frederica Road just hours after Matthew blew through. He truly embodies what it means to be a good neighbor! Also, Harrison Sapp, Griffin Bufkin and their crew at Southern Soul, as well as Chef Dave Snyder of Halyards and Tramici, went above and beyond, feeding the many workers who were getting the power and water back up and running. Those guys don’t just talk the talk, they walk the walk!

Ed. Note: In last month’s article “Keeping It In the Family,” we incorrectly identified Jack and Fran Pierce in a photo caption. That is, in fact, the Pierces, and we apologize for the error.

ol the umkin, ring on the i! It’s official; the nation has lost its collective mind over pumpkin spice.

I

t may have been Starbucks that created the craze when it introduced its seasonal pumpkin spice lattes as the heralding flavor of fall, but they wouldn’t have become popular if there wasn’t some demand. Now, however, a trip to your nearest store will reveal that the trend has gone far beyond coffee, and the typical muffins, breads, cookies, and pies. Today you can find pumpkin spice flavored mixed nuts, candies and caramel, popcorn, beers, and even dog treats, not to mention candles, body lotions, soaps, and facial masks capitalizing on the pumpkin trend. Of course, fall does mean Thanksgiving and with Thanksgiving comes PIE! And for the purists, this generally includes pumpkin, pecan, and apple, but since we think the pumpkin spice bandwagon is much too full right now, we’re looking at everything BUT the pumpkin! Turkey Pot Pie

ccording to the American Pie Council,

16

ELEGANT ISLAND LIVING

(yes, there really is such a thing!), pie has been around since the ancient Egyptians, with the first pies being made by early Romans, who may have learned about it from the Greeks. But these weren’t exactly what we’d consider pie today; they were sometimes made using “reeds” which held the filling but weren’t eaten. The first pie recipe was published by the Romans, and it did have a rye crust which was filled with goat cheese and honey. In England, early “pyes” were mostly meat pies, and may have appeared as early as the 12th century. The crust was referred to as the “coffyn,” and often blanketed a dish using fowl, with the legs left hanging over the dish to serve as handles. Early American colonists baked pie in a similar fashion, in long narrow pans, calling them “coffins” and often

the crust was simply used to hold the filling during baking, and was not eaten. During the Revolutionary War, the term “crust” instead of “coffyn” became widespread. A nice, golden, flaky pie crust is essential for the perfect pie. Making that crust from scratch is a task that scares away many novice bakers. But there are some tips to ensure a no-fail pie crust every time. First, make sure your ingredients are very, very cold, especially the butter or shortening. You can also put your bowl of flour and your pastry cutter in the freezer for a few minutes to ensure that everything stays cold and the butter doesn’t melt or get overworked. Add a teaspoon of apple cider vinegar at the same time you add the ice water (continues)

ow to Make a attice op for a ie Crust 1. Before starting the lattice top, roll out half of your pie dough and line your pie dish with it. The dough should extend beyond the rim of the pie dish by about half an inch. Put it in the refrigerator to chill while you work on the lattice. On a lightly floured surface, roll out the other half of your pie dough to the same extent as the first half (about 3 inches beyond the diameter of your pie dish). It's easier to work with the dough if it is chilled, so if the dough has softened too much, put the rolled-out piece on a flat cookie sheet and chill it in the refrigerator or freezer for a few minutes. 2. For the top crust, roll out the same way you did with the bottom crust. Using a pizza cutter or a knife, slice it into even strips about 1/2" wide. 3. Lay the two middle strips to establish the center, then work out from there. Before each new strip is laid down, lift back every other strip in the perpendicular rows, so that when those strips are laid back in place, it creates an over-under-over-under weave. 4. Pinch the lattice strips to the bottom crust to help seal them; trim away the excess dough. Finish your edge by folding the overhanging dough under itself. 5. Crimp the edge if you'd like to. Remember, it doesn't really matter if your crust is a bit lopsided or funny looking.

in your favorite pie crust recipe. This helps prevent gluten from forming. Then, let your dough rest for at least one hour before rolling it out. When you do roll it out, use flour liberally. Once it’s rolled to the appropriate diameter, take a pastry brush and brush off any and all excess on each side. Most importantly, RELAX! Enjoy yourself in the kitchen and tweak your recipes and technique as needed. That’s part of the fun of cooking! In the tradition of those first “pyes,” you might consider making a turkey pot pie with your Thanksgiving leftovers. Here’s an excellent recipe from The Pioneer Woman:

eftover Turkey Pot ie INGREDIENTS:

1 pie crust ½ stick butter ½ c. finely diced onion ½ c. finely diced carrot ½ c. finely diced celery 2 c. leftover turkey, light and dark, diced or shredded (or both!) ¼ c. flour 2 to 3 c. low-sodium chicken or turkey broth (or more, if needed) splash of white wine ¾ c. heavy cream Fresh thyme, chopped salt and pepper to taste PREPARATION:

Preheat oven to 400°. Melt butter in skillet or Dutch oven. Add onion, carrots, and celery, and cook until translucent (a couple of minutes). Add turkey and stir. Sprinkle flour over mixture and stir. Cook over medium heat for a couple of minutes, stirring constantly. Pour in broth, (continues)

stirring constantly. Splash in wine. Pour in cream. Bring to a slow boil and allow mixture to cook and thicken for a few minutes. Add salt and pepper to taste (do not underseason), and fresh or dried thyme to taste. Pour mixture into a casserole dish or deep pie pan. Roll out crust so that it’s about 1" larger than the pan you are using. Place the crust on top of the pot pie mixture, and press crust into the sides of the dish. Cut vents in the top of the crust. Bake for 30-40 minutes or until very golden and bubbly and the crust is done. Allow to cool for a little bit before serving with a large spoon.

Fruit pies and tarts didn’t come along until around the 1500s. Lore has it that Queen Elizabeth I was credited with baking the first cherry pie. We have a recipe for that all-American favorite that’s excellent using either fresh or frozen cherries. And speaking of cherries, it was Martha Washington who shared in a mid1700s cookbook this recipe for a classic Southern pie – essentially a “cheese”less cheesecake.

hess ie INGREDIENTS:

Single pastry crust, shaped into a pie plate and chilled 4 eggs, room temperature 2 ½ oz. (about 5 Tbsp.) whole milk 1 Tbsp. vanilla extract 14 oz. (about 2 c.) granulated sugar 4 oz. (1 stick) melted butter, cooled ½ tsp. salt 2 Tbsp. finely ground cornmeal 1 Tbsp all-purpose flour 1 Tbsp. white vinegar PREPARATION:

Adjust oven rack to lowest position and preheat oven to 425°. Line chilled pie shell with foil or parchment and fill it with pie weights (dried beans work well). Bake on bottom rack of oven for 5 minutes, then lower temperature to 325° and bake for an additional 3 minutes. Remove (continues)

the weights and liner and bake pie shell until it is light golden brown, 3 to 4 minutes longer. Remove the crust from oven and cool completely. In a bowl, whisk eggs, milk, and vanilla together for 30 seconds, until well combined. Add sugar slowly, whisking as you go. Add butter, salt, cornmeal, flour, and vinegar, and whisk until filling is smooth and there are no visible lumps. Pour filling into cooled shell and place on lower rack of oven. Bake for 45 minutes, or until filling has set up but still quivers a bit and is slightly puffed at edges. Allow pie to cool completely. Either serve warm or cover and refrigerate for a chilled filling.

minutes, remove from heat. In a small bowl, mix sugar and cornstarch together. Pour mixture into hot cherries and mix well. Return the mixture to stove and cook over low heat until thickened, stirring frequently. Remove from heat and let cool. If filling is too thick, add a little water, if too thin, add a little more cornstarch. Preheat oven to 375. Prepare your pie crust. Divide in half. Roll out each piece large enough to fit into an 8 to 9" pan. Pour cooled cherry mixture into the crust. Dot with butter. Moisten edge of bottom crust. Place top crust on and flute the edge of the pie. Make a slit in the middle of the crust for steam to escape. Sprinkle with sugar. Bake for about 50 minutes. Remove from oven and place on a rack to cool. Blueberries always make for a juicy, sweet pie. Pick them during the summer and freeze them. They bake well either way!

Line a 9" deep-dish pie plate with bottom crust. Trim pastry to ½ in. beyond edge of plate; flute edges. Line unpricked pastry shell with a double thickness of heavy-duty foil. Bake at 450° for 8 minutes. Remove foil; bake 5 minutes longer. Cool on wire rack. Reduce heat to 375°. In a small bowl, beat cream cheese, confectioners’ sugar and lemon juice until light and fluffy. Beat in egg yolk until blended. Spread into crust. In a large saucepan, combine ½ c. sugar, flour and cornstarch; stir in water until smooth. Stir in 2 c. berries. Bring to a boil; cook and stir for 1-2 minutes or until thickened. Cool slightly. Gently stir in the lemon juice, mint and remaining berries. Pour over cheese filling. Cut remaining pastry for top crust into decorative shapes (Leaves for Thanksgiving/ fall; stars for Independence Day, etc. Have fun with it!) and arrange over filling, leaving center uncovered. Brush pastry with egg white; sprinkle with remaining sugar. Bake at 375° for 35-40 minutes or until crust is golden brown and filling is bubbly. Pastry crust ¾ stick unsalted butter 1 ¼ c. packed light brown sugar ¾ c. light corn syrup 2 tsp. pure vanilla extract ½ tsp. grated orange zest ¼ tsp. salt 3 large eggs 2 c. pecan halves (1/2 lb.) PREPARATION:

Preheat oven to 350° with a baking sheet on middle rack. Roll out dough on a lightly floured surface with a lightly floured rolling pin into a 12" round and fit into a 9" pie plate. Trim edge, leaving a ½" overhang. Fold overhang under and lightly press against rim of pie plate, then crimp decoratively. Lightly prick bottom all over with a fork. Chill until firm, at least 30 minutes (or freeze 10 minutes). Meanwhile, melt butter in a small heavy saucepan over medium heat. Add brown sugar, whisking until smooth. Remove from heat and whisk in corn syrup, vanilla, zest, and salt. Lightly beat eggs in a medium bowl, then whisk in corn syrup mixture. Put pecans in pie shell and pour corn syrup mixture evenly over them. Bake on hot baking sheet until filling is set, 50 minutes to 1 hour. Cool completely. Serve with vanilla ice cream. (continues)

Relics uncovered, such as a turtle bone necklace, continue to inform our view of life in the cabins. Event is free and open to the public. C’mon out and get some tasty goodies! HOLIDAY MARKET CRAFT FAIR

L

ord of Life Lutheran Church is busy preparing for its eighth annual Holiday Market Craft Fair, which will be held at 2801 Frederica Road on Saturday, December 3, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The annual event hosts over thirty vendors, both indoor and outdoor, who sell quality handmade wares including pottery, artwork, glasswork, jewelry, baby and children’s gift items, cute things for pets, cement outdoor art, holiday items, aprons and kitchenware, one of a kind totes, knitted and crocheted items, and many other interesting gift ideas. Nancy Day, children’s book author, will be available to sign her books. “Flavor of Georgia” winner Rockingham Pecans will sell their fried pecans and candies. The Blueberry Barn, from Alma, will be at the event for their third year to sell a variety of blueberry products. In addition, the church will host a bake sale and a used book sale. Coffee and breakfast snacks and lunch will be served. Outstanding raffle prizes include restaurant gift cards, specialty gift baskets and a hand-crafted woodwork item donated by Paul Speich, member of the Golden Isles Woodworkers. Door prizes, donated by our vendors, are awarded every hour. Committee chairperson, Renée Evenson Balka says,

“It’s hard to believe this is our eighth annual Holiday Market Craft Fair. We are so proud that our fair has become well-known in our community. Our neighbors throughout the Golden Isles look forward to this event. We are also proud that every year we have returning vendors along with new ones to showcase their handcrafted and specialty items. We always provide shoppers with a wide variety of gift ideas for the holidays. Santa Claus spends the day so this is a great photo op for families. We are thankful for our many volunteers who work hard to make this an enjoyable day for everyone and we look forward to welcoming our visitors.” Proceeds benefit Lord of Life Youth Camp Scholarship Fund and other church, social ministry, and outreach programs in our community. Pastor Bonnie Lanyi says, “Last year was my first year as Lord of Life’s new pastor to experience this fun event. Funds were raised to help send our young people to camp. They came home from camp with many stories about how their lives were changed for the better in significant ways.

Also, funds were used to care for people in our community who found themselves in dire need. God is so good and provides. This is one way we are able to reach out and serve those in need, and impact the community in positive ways. Thank you to all who support this event!” For additional information call 912.638.4673. during National Collection Week for Operation Christmas Child in November. Since 1993, Samaritan’s Purse, a non-denominational Christian organization that supports a variety of ministries, has distributed over 130 million shoebox gifts to children in more than 150 countries or territories around the world in Jesus’ Name. OCC is the world’s largest Christmas project of this kind. They delivered over 20 million shoeboxes to children in over 100 countries in the last three years. This year, they hope to collect enough shoebox gifts to reach another 14 million children. Every shoebox gift is an expression of God’s love that brings joy and the Good News of Jesus Christ to a child in need. Addition-

ally, many of the children are enrolled in a 12-lesson discipleship course, The Greatest Journey. Many of these children are coming to Christ as they study the lessons. This ministry not only spreads the Gospel abroad but also locally. Lord of Life has shoeboxes available if needed or you could simply pack a shoebox from your closet. Items that go in the shoeboxes are specified for a girl or boy, ages 2-4, ages 5-9 or ages 1014. Examples of what to buy are hair brushes, soap and washcloth, toothbrushes and toothpaste, toys, games, puzzles, books, stuffed animal, jump rope, balls, flip flops or shoes, pencils and notebook paper, markers or crayons, socks, hats, pajamas, shirt, etc. Basically anything that you can fit in a shoebox that a child in need could use is acceptable. What a great way to start the holiday season! The church, located at 2801 Frederica Road, will be open for anyone to drop off shoeboxes during the following hours: Monday-Friday, November 14-20 from 9:30-11:30 a.m. and 5-7:00 p.m.; Saturday, November 19, 9-11:00 a.m. and 2-4:00 p.m.; Sunday, November 20, 122:00 p.m. and 4-7:00 p.m.; and Monday, November 21, 9:3011:30 a.m. If you would like to volunteer counting shoeboxes and packing cartons, please call Lord of Life at 912.638.7431 because many hands make light work.

he holiday concert not to miss! The Golden Isles Community Chorus will present its annual performance of the Christmas portion of Handel’s “Messiah, Part I” at Wesley United Methodist Church, Frederica on Saturday, December 3 at 3:00 p.m. and Sunday, December 4 at 7:00 p.m. The Christmas portion of Handel’s beloved oratorio includes choir, organ, soloists, and orchestra. It’s a rather epic undertaking: the community choir consists of 90 members plus soloists who represent 35 area churches, and they are accompanied by an orchestra. This has been a Golden Isles tradition for more than three decades and it continues for good reason. The performance is always phenomenal and will fill you with the spirit of the season. he Mistletoe Market Holiday Arts & Crafts Festival presented by Glynn Visual Arts will take place Saturday and Sunday, December 3-4 in Postell Park on St. Simons Island. This fine art and gift market is in its sixth year and has become a mainstay of the Golden Isles’ holiday festivities. The yarn-bombers will decorate just for the occasion! For the second year, local knitters will be turning Postell Park into its own work of art! Throughout the year they have been working away and will reveal their beautiful work at the opening of the festival. The colorful decorations will only remain in the park for this festival weekend. “This year, we expect over 60 accomplished artists and artisans offering a wide array of quality artwork including two dimensional art, pottery, jewelry, sculpture, photography, woodworking, baskets, fabric and mixed media.” says festival director Hannah Roberts. “This show combines fine art, fabulous gifts,

great food, entertainment & family fun in a festive Island holiday atmosphere. It is the perfect opportunity for residents and visitors alike to find that one-of-a-kind purchase or gift for the holiday season. As an added bonus, when you buy something handmade, purchased directly from the artist, you are supporting small business and the local community.” In addition to the vendors, there will be some holiday-themed family entertainment and activities scheduled. There will be a Holiday Hound Hike, where local pooches (and maybe even a potbellied pig!) will get all dressed up in their holiday best and put on a parade to celebrate the season. There will be a Kid’s Creation Station to entertain the smallest artists with free holiday themed craft activities. Some of our favorite local celebrities will be providing live music. And no holiday festival would be complete without a visit from Santa! Plan to come out to the village and take part in the fun! For more information, visit glynnvisualarts.org. (continues)

Both veterans of the United States Air Force, the Sharpes are among the ranks of our nation’s heroes who bravely served and protected our freedom and way of life. But upon returning from war and service to our country, they realized that reintegrating into “normal” life was proving to be challenging; they both had experienced personal traumas that seriously affected their personal relationships and their psychological well being. When Dave’s struggle became too much for him to bear and he found himself on the brink of suicide, another unlikely hero came to his rescue – a tiny pit bull puppy named Cheyenne, whom Dave had adopted from a rescue organization just three months earlier. Cheyenne became a confidant with whom Dave could express his emotions and share his pain, without fear of judgment or misunderstanding. And so it was, Dave and Cheyenne actually saved each other, and out of what could have been a tragic ending, a beautiful and purposeful idea was born. In 2009, Dave Sharpe founded Companions for Heroes (C4H), a 501(c)3 non-profit organization which pairs shelter and rescued animals with active duty military and military veterans as well as first responders (police/fire/ EMS/trauma nurses and doctors), with hopes that these heroes, who may be suffering from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), Traumatic Brain Injuries (TBI) and other psycho-

logical stresses, may form a similarly supportive and loving bond with an animal friend. Dave said at the time of founding, “My shelter dog is the sole reason I am here today. Furthermore, my dog has allowed me to grow close relationships with my family and friends. I believe other veterans can benefit from the same type of companionship.” C4H’s mission is to ensure that financial barriers do not prevent prospective adoptions from going through, and also to follow up with the paired Heroes and their rescue pets to ensure the partnership gets off to a positive start. C4H covers adoption costs, veterinary fees, pet supplies and even training services in hopes of building strong bonds between the Heroes and their new companions. To date, C4H has assisted in the pairing of over 1500 heroes with sheltered and rescued animals that would otherwise spend their lives in shelters, or be euthanized. Which means that over 3000 lives have

been saved, or at least dramatically improved, thanks to the tireless efforts of the Sharpes and the C4H team. In 2016, C4H began to focus more than ever on female veterans and the traumas they endure from service to our country. Like her husband, Jenny (currently a Registered Nurse who is pursuing her Master’s as a Nurse Practitioner) is a military veteran of the U.S. Air Force who served our country for 12 years. She enlisted in the Air Force as a Special Operations Communications Specialist and then changed careers to fly our nation’s top leadership as a Flight Attendant; serving on Air Force 2 as part of Vice President Dick Cheney’s Staff and for several other high-ranking U.S. officials including Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, General Colin Powell, Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld, Presidents George H.W. Bush and Bill Clinton. In 2007, Jenny volunteered to deploy to Balad, Iraq to serve as an U.S. Air Force

services to the high-ranking officials who commanded the operations in Iraq. A high stress position, for sure, especially for a woman. Jenny and Dave met and the two were married in January 2011. They spent eight months apart from each other with Dave located in Washington D.C. serving our country as part of the U.S. Intelligence community and Jenny stationed with the Air Force at Ramstein Air Base, Germany. Following that separation, Jenny decided to end her tenure in the military to join Dave in Washington, D.C. An unanticipated side effect of that was that Jenny immediately began to experience the difficult adjustment to civilian life and the hardships of reintegrating into society after a military career. At that point, five months pregnant with their son, Dax, Jenny found herself often home alone while Dave travelled or was working 10-12 hour days. She began to become depressed and frustrated, contemplating how to choose her next career. Jenny endured severe anxiety from this, “I remember spending many restless nights, tossing and turning, wondering how I was going to begin my new life out of the military, but more importantly, I was in fear of choosing the career and then failing at it. The fear of failure is what created the deep issues for me.” Unfortunately, this is a reoccurring theme from, not only our female veterans, but all veterans.

The fear of failure in making the right decision, which, for some heroes, is the first decision they’ve had to make on their own. Most military personnel are given orders and must follow those orders. However, C4H’s staff has learned from post-adoption follow ups with its heroes, that making the decision to adopt a dog or cat and choosing their animal with the help of the animal experts at the rescues and shelters, has been a life-changing decision for its veterans and leads to good decisions thereafter. C4H Executive Director Eric Basek explains, “We’ve learned that when a hero applies for our services, he or she is very concerned about their future and is scared to make a decision post-military life. With the hero being an integral part of the decision process regarding selecting their animal, the praise that follows from their family or friends about how cute their dog or cat is, or how sweet the dog or cat are, provides validation to the hero that they made a good decision. Positive reinforcement of that decision leads to other major decisions that turn to be very good such as going back to school, obtaining a job and even being a volunteer for C4H to share their experience for the next hero seeking help where they once were. It’s simply amazing!” The Sharpes’ passion and enthusiasm for this important cause is incredibly moving, and serves as a poignant reminder that out of darkness there is light, and with faith and convic-

tion anything is possible. Their heroism didn’t end with their military service—rather, it truly began there, and continues to this day. Our little community on St. Simons Island is better for having admirable and inspirational neighbors such as these. This locally based, nationally recognized effort to afford critical support to our service members and first responders while also saving countless animals from the heartbreaking scourge of shelters and euthanasia, could use your support. Companions For Heroes’ current goal is to raise $50,000 to help 33 heroes and animals in our local area to become productive members of our society and have a better life. The average cost per hero-animal adoption is $1,500. All donations are 100% tax deductible, and 92% of your donation goes directly to the Heroes being assisted with adoption costs. Please visit companionsforheroes.org to learn more about their mission, read additional success stories and, if you are able, make a donation. If you have friends and family who support Veterans’ issues and/ or animal rescue, please consider making a gift in their honor. The website also has information about holiday gift giving and In Honor/In Memoriam gifting. Your support will help local community members, US Veterans, and homeless animals, it’s a gift that truly keeps giving.

and empowerment. May God always use this for his glory and take it wherever he wants it. May we always walk in obedience.” Marci, one of the women helped by the ministry, starts her story by saying, “No one ever sits and dreams as a little girl that they hope to get married, divorced and then their ex pass away. I was tired and scared. I knew it was only by the Grace of God I put my feet on the floor every morning. Life is amazing with Jesus and even more amazing celebrating it with Sisters in Christ. I asked Jesus awhile back to place women in my life who would get me. I wasn’t even sure I got ‘me.’” Then she joined the ladies of GraceFull Goods. Marci shares, “I was invited to sit at a kitchen table surround by fear, well- beads, wire, peg boards and rope, it scared me. I just kept thinking fake it till you make it. I listened, watched and tried. I knew in that exact moment Jesus was at that kitchen table because what I created amazed me, all the while surrounded by women of God. I went home and literally dreamed a design. I was so scared to try and explain it the next day, but I was the new girl. Something empowered me to mention my idea. Just throw it out there. I was surrounded with such support and encouragement I even believed I could do it. I made a piece I loved.

The very first piece I ever watched someone buy was my piece. I knew at that exact moment Jesus had wrapped his arms around me and I have never felt safer. This was the creation of the ‘Lord, Have Marci!’ bracelet.” Another GraceFull artisan, Ginger, explains that her story is “A story of recovery, divorce and receiving Grace. In 2015 I was served with

divorce papers on the grounds of my untreated alcohol abuse. The very next Sunday I heard a little voice say go to church. I had turned my back on Christ for the past 40 years. Three weeks later I entered recovery and through prayers and obedience I began developing a deep a relation with Christ.” She found her way to GraceFull Goods too. “In 2016 I started praying for women to

be placed in my life that would continue to help me grow even more spiritually. Through Beloved Ministries, God led me to Sharon’s table and I knew my prayers were answered. Sitting around her table with my sisters in Christ while sharing life and listening to praise and worship music has given me new hope, strength, and empowerment. As someone in recovery, it truly has given me a chance to get outside my problems and learn even more compassion and love for others. This has been and continues to be an amazing spiritual awakening! Grace-Filled.” Less than one year into existence, GraceFull Goods has been blessed to go to other parts of “everywhere.” Sharon explains, “God has opened doors to so many places. We do work with women in recovery locally. And we have relationships with Romania, Africa, Haiti, and the Dominican Republic. Only He can write this story. My prayer is that GraceFull Goods is used for His glory and that we can all learn to love as Christ loves us.” Consider purchasing your holiday gifts from GraceFull Goods this year; your purchase provides income and greater hope and opportunity to these ladies in our community and beyond. Be Road Trip Ready Are you planning a trek over the river and through the woods to Grandmother’s house for Thanksgiving? Or maybe a Christmas vacation getaway to the mountains? The last thing you want is to be stranded somewhere along your trip due to mechanical issues.

ith the upcoming season of holiday travel in mind, our hometown family service automotive experts at Bill Duckworth Tire want to remind you about the importance of regular vehicle maintenance and automotive checkups. Not only are they there to provide all of your automotive care needs, they’re also sharing some useful tips from the non-profit Car Care Council that will assist in keeping your car road trip ready. The Car Care Council is the source of information for the “Be Car Care Aware” consumer education campaign promoting the benefits of regular vehicle care, maintenance and repair to consumers. They publish an excellent vehicle resource called the Car Care Guide, which is available for free via their website carcare.org.

“It’s easy to remember to get your family ready for the holiday festivities, but what about preparing the car that’s going to get you there?” said Rich White, executive director, Car Care Council. “Having a pre-inspection performed on your car will give you peace of mind as you travel and help make your journey safer.” Before leaving home, the Car Care Council recommends a check of the following, often overlooked, items: tires and tire pressure, brakes, hoses and belts, air filters, wipers, exterior and interior lighting, and fluid levels, including engine oil, windshield washer solvent and antifreeze/coolant. “A pre-trip inspection provides the opportunity to have service repairs made at home by your own trusted technician who knows the vehicle, and helps reduce the chance of costly and dangerous trouble on the road,” White explains. TIRE PRESSURE: Pressure that is too low or

too high can affect gas mileage, tread wear and vehicle performance. Check your tires once a month when they are still cold, using the PSI (pounds per square inch) number located on the driver door or in the owner’s manual. FLUIDS CHECK: Check your car’s fluids once

The Car Care Council also recommends that you perform routine maintenance and do-ityourself automobile checkups regularly so your car is always ready to hit the road – whether your trip is planned or unexpected. White says, “It is important and gives you peace of mind to know that your vehicle is always ready for the task.” They suggest that the following checks be made on a regular basis: TIRE TREAD: Tire tread helps your car grip the

road. Having low tire tread is especially dangerous when driving in wet, flood-like, snowy or icy conditions. Check your tread easily with a penny by inserting it into your tire’s tread groove with Lincoln’s head upside down and facing you. If you can see all of Lincoln’s head, your tread depth is less than 2/32 of an inch

The Oglethorpe Hotel: A Lost Landmark

I

n 1888, Harper’s Weekly, an American news magazine, predicted that “Brunswick by the Sea” would become the winter Newport. The 1880s marked the beginning of the resort era in southeast Georgia as northerners traveled to the southern coast in search of warmer winters and leisure activities like hunting and fishing. The Jekyll Island Club, for example, was established in 1886 as a winter retreat by a group of America’s most prominent businessmen, including J.P. Morgan and William Rockefeller. Club members and other travelers

arriving by train sought suitable accommodations. These visitors flocked to the Oglethorpe Hotel when its doors opened in 1888. Located between Newcastle Street and the train station to the west, the magnificent brick structure was three stories high. New York architect J.A. Wood designed the building in a Victorian revival style, featuring round towers and an ornate front piazza. M. Rich and Bro. of Atlanta (forerunner of Rich’s Department Store) supplied all inte-

rior decorations with no two rooms being furnished alike. The elegant interior featured marble floors, crystal chandeliers and indoor plumbing. An artesian well supplied water for baths, the kitchen and the fire suppression system. Each floor was equipped with a fire hydrant, hose and alarms. The hotel was originally lighted with gas; however, arrangements for later installation of electrical lighting were made during construction. After providing seventy years of gracious hospitality to visitors and local residents, the hotel was demolished in 1958.

This month’s image of a hand-colored glass lantern slide of the hotel is from the Coastal Georgia Historical Society’s Margaret Davis Cate Collection. Since its founding in 1965, the Coastal Georgia Historical Society’s archival collection has grown to over 15,000 historically important artifacts, documents and photographs.

Our monthly images on this page are from the vast archives of the Coastal Georgia Historical Society. The Society’s mission includes the “administration, restoration and maintenance of historic facilities and resources … preserved as a living part of the historical and cultural foundations of our coastal community.” Society facilities include the St. Simons Lighthouse and Museum, the A.W. Jones Heritage Center, and the Maritime Center (formerly the U.S. Coast Guard Station). To learn more about the Society, its diverse programs, and the benefits of Society membership, please call (912) 638.4666, or visit www.saintsimonslighthouse.org. 138 E L E G A N T I S L A N D L I V I N G
