PUBLISHER’S LETTER

Frankly Scarlett …

F

or years I have considered myself to be a master procrastinator. The “art” of putting off something to a later time or “getting around to it” takes years of practice. From learning my lines in an Island Players production, to doing laundry, working out, or even writing my publisher’s letter, procrastination covers me like a bad cologne. I’m sure all of us procrastinate from time to time to some degree. The key is to not feel guilty about it! Well, friends, I have discovered a new “lifestyle” concept that I would like to share with you all. The next time you get accused of procrastinating, inform your accuser that you are merely practicing the art of “niksen.” Niksen is the Dutch lifestyle concept of doing nothing. Practicing niksen can be as simple as just hanging around, looking at your surroundings, or listening to music, as long as it’s without purpose. It cannot be an activity done in order to achieve something or be productive. Researchers say niksen helps with stress and may even curtail the aging process.

ELEGANT ISLAND LIVING

I got to practice the art of niksen recently when lightning hit my house and fried both of my

TVs, so I was stuck in my house looking out the windows. The problem with practicing niksen is that while you’re sitting there doing nothing, you’re thinking about all of the things you’ve been putting off by procrastinating! I need to buy a new TV, work on production for the upcoming Island Players show, do some laundry, work out, and write THIS publisher’s letter. Think I’ll put off practicing niksen ’til tomorrow. As Scarlett O’Hara once said, “Tomorrow is another day.”

T

he family named Love had very big hearts. When tragedy befell Kenny and Sandra Love in 2017, they sought and received custody of their young grandchildren. The Loves

lived in a modest home in Brunswick until a kitchen fire changed their lives, necessitating a move into a small, substandard, overcrowded apartment five days before Christmas. They were desperate. (continues)

Meet the Love family, homeowners of HFHGC’s 87th home. Miah, Youlanda, Mercedes, Sandra, Kenny, and Anthony.

The staff at Communities in Schools at Goodyear Elementary, where one of the grandchildren attends school, recommended that the family apply for a home through Habitat for Humanity of Glynn County (HFHGC). In the New Year, the Loves began the journey to a safe, decent and affordable home for their extended family, as they became the 87th family to qualify for an HFHGC home. “I don’t know how to thank the Habitat community of supporters and volunteers,” says Sandra Love, now struggling with cancer. “We couldn’t be more excited about every detail of our new place, and Lord knows we are grateful. Home means everything to us and our grandkids.” Her husband Kenny happily contributes sweat equity at every build, and plans to continue to donate his carpentry skills to future Habitat projects even after his family 18

takes ownership of their MLK Blvd home. “Our partnership with Habitat has been lifechanging for us,” states Kenny. Millard Fuller, who founded Habitat for Humanity International on Koinonia Farm outside of Americus, GA, in 1976, would approve. “Everyone who gets sleepy at night should have a simple, decent place to lay their heads, on terms they can afford to pay,” Fuller frequently opined, and, with his wife, Linda, dedicated his life to building safe, decent and affordable homes for low-income households who have no other hope for home ownership. It was when Ben Slade III, then president of First Federal Savings and Loan, saw a TV segment on former President Jimmy Carter’s Habitat projects that the wheels started in motion for the Glynn County affiliate.

Slade was intrigued by the program. “First Federal was a primary mortgage lender,” he noted in an interview, “and I saw firsthand the need that some low-income families had. Over the years, I had seen people who wanted to get better housing but just couldn’t afford a conventional bank loan, and I thought this would be an ideal way to help them.” Thus, he founded affiliate Habitat for Humanity of Glynn County in 1989 and enlisted an eight-member board of trustees (Tom Dennard, Bill Stewart, Robert Long, Ann Dempsey, Roosevelt Harris, LaRon Bennett, Johnny Patelidas, and Charlie Thrower) plus executive director Gordon Davis, to help answer the call. Slade served as HFHGC’s chairman for eight years. The organization celebrates its 30th anniversary this year with a Hunt Ball at The Boathouse

at Frederica Golf Club. This inaugural fall fundraiser supports HFHGC’s mission of helping others in their hunt for a home and also celebrates the Southern hunt – fishing, fowl and game. Held on Sunday, October 6th, from 5:00-9:00 p.m., the event will feature wildlife artists and artisans, live demonstrations with owls, hawks and hounds, exhibitions of antique and European firearms, vintage hunting vehicles, and a live auction of exceptional hunting and fishing experiences. Guests will enjoy classic Southern cuisine paired with bourbon tastings, an open bar, and live music by Mason Waters & the Groove Allstars. And despite the Hunt Ball title, there will be no ballgowns here; dress for the casual event is jeans or stylish sporting attire. At print date, Sponsors for the Hunt Ball include: Ashley’s Business Solutions, Elegant Island Living, Frederica Golf Club, Georgia Pacific Brunswick Cellulose, Laura Angela Photography, Sea Island, Synovus, and United Community Bank. Participating vendors include: Brackish Ties, Dorchester Hunting Preserve, Emily McCarthy, Jennifer Broadus Fine Art, Kevin’s Guns and Fine Apparel, Lisa Zipperer Designs, Mossy Pond Retrievers, Norton and Hodges, On the Fly Outfitters, Over Under, Plantation Gallery - David Lanier Fine Art, Sea Island Forge. HFHGC has come a long way since October 30, 1989, when it broke ground for its first home on a donated lot at the corner of Gordon and Fourth Streets in Brunswick. First-time homeowners Jimmy and Kathleen Wilson, and their four children, moved into their three-bedroom, one-bath home on April 7, 1990. Currently, HFHGC is working on plans for its 100th home. Like today’s Habitat homeowners, the Wilsons met the organization’s eligibility requirements. Applicants must have at least one year of legal residency in Glynn County, pass a criminal background and credit check, and currently reside in overcrowded, unsafe, or substandard shelter. They must demonstrate that (continues)

they are unable to acquire a conventional home mortgage and that they have a steady income sufficient to meet household expenses plus a monthly mortgage obligation. They must also be willing to contribute 200 sweat equity hours per household adult during the build, to take ten hours of personal financial man-

agement classes, and commit to maintaining their Habitat house in an appropriate manner. These eligibility requirements come as a surprise to many people. HFHGC President & CEO Bert Brown sets the record straight: “We offer a path to home ownership – a hand up,

not a hand out. Habitat’s mission statement expresses the organization’s aim to transition families from substandard, overcrowded, or unsafe residences to safe, decent, affordable homes. Habitat homeowners make a minimal deposit and interest-free, affordable monthly mortgage payments, in addition to (continues)

their sweat equity construction investments. The Habitat-financed homes are sold to our partner families at no profit, and the mortgage payments return to Habitat’s capital pool used to build future homes. It’s a proven model that works!”

Mac Barnhardt, T.J. Mitchell, George Jackson, and Michael Kaufman.

Board chairman Mason Waters notes that the typical HFHGC home is a simple, three-bedroom/two-bath residence of about 1200 square feet. Its cost to the homeowner averages between $70,000 and $85,000, for an approximate $450/month payment that includes property taxes and insurance. Homes are built by a family/volunteer partnership that is like no other. “It is particularly gratifying that HFHGC’s overhead is financed 100% by our highly-successful retail ReStore,” explains Waters. Located in Lanier Plaza in Brunswick, the ReStore accepts donations of gently-used furniture, home furnishings and construction products and sells them to Habitat families and the general public at deep discounts. “If you live anywhere in Glynn County, please know that if you call the Habitat ReStore, we will hap-

pily schedule a pickup,” Waters says. “You don’t have to worry about getting your donation to us – our truck will be on its way!” Continuing its milestone 2019, Habitat for Humanity of Glynn County is honored to announce Century Place, a new Habitat-built urban neighborhood. Century Place will be a neighborhood of approximately 15 homes, including HFHGC’s 100th home. The oneof-a-kind community is ideally located near schools, the Boys & Girls Club, Southeast Georgia Regional Health System, and the College of Coastal Georgia. “Century Place is a dream come true,” enthuses Bert Brown. “Research shows that children who grow up in secure and

stable homes do better academically, have higher graduation rates, and most importantly, go on to be citizens that contribute to society, raising families that do the same. So a Habitat home impacts not just the generation that lives in it, but subsequent generations. Affordable home ownership changes lives in ways that little else does today.” He continues, “We look forward to Century Place having a positive impact on our community for not only this, but also future generations. It is the project of our lifetimes, and I want to invite all residents of Coastal Georgia to contribute their time and/or resources to help make Century Place the tremendous success it can be.” By attending the Hunt Ball, you are supporting this project and the mission of HFHGC. Tickets to the October 6 Hunt Ball at the Frederica Boathouse are $150 per person and can be purchased online at eventbrite.com. served under a beautiful tent on the historic campus of Morningstar Children and Family Services, located on Highway 99. According to Beth VanDerbeck, CEO of Morningstar, one of the most often asked questions about Morningstar is “What’s behind those gates?”

There is a story behind the gates. While Morningstar has been serving children with developmental disabilities since 1996, the gates have stood on the property since the late 1940s. Originally established as a children’s home during this period, the property has a (continues)

history dating back to the 1700s when it was Elizafield Plantation. The state of Georgia acquired the land, and it became Santo Domingo State Park. After the park closed, Ardell Nation, Boys’ Estate founder, acquired the property and erected the gates as a symbol of hope for boys in need of a place to call home. Today, the gates still stand as a symbol that all who enter may find hope.

hard to provide these opportunities, and we couldn’t do it without significant community support,” says VanDerbeck. “We are especially proud of the impact our community counseling program has on children here in the community. This is where we see a real opportunity to grow in our capacity to serve,” VanDerbeck noted. The agency served 385 children in the counseling program last year.

Today, Morningstar Children and Family Services is a local non-profit with over 100 team members serving children every day. The mission of Morningstar is to be a sanctuary where

transformative teaching and healing affirms children through real relationships. Established in 1996 to help children with profound developmental disabilities through residential programming, today Morningstar also offers foster care, and community counseling programs in Brunswick and Reynolds, Georgia. In 2018, the agency served 483 children across these three programs. Morningstar is connecting kids with brighter days and making a real impact in the community. All proceeds from the event go back into the programs of Morningstar. According to Beth VanDerbeck, CEO of Morningstar, “we have a great story to tell. We are serving a group of exceptional children and providing opportunities for children to heal.” “Our team, including our Board, works very 26

through the gates on a tour with his friend and board member Nick Doster and being struck by the work being done on the campus. Linda Sewell, another local board member, says, “The Morningstar Board realizes the dire need of the children we serve. Every child comes into this world with their own set of needs. The focus of the Morningstar Board is to improve the lives of these children staying at Morningstar who live with autism or are mentally and emotionally challenged. We are working hard to expand our counseling services into the Brunswick community to provide our services to many of the children and teenagers in need.” Chip Beaton, a local attorney who gives his time to serve on the Board, says, “Morningstar’s mission fulfills Christ’s

command to serve the least of these. I have enjoyed seeing the strides the organization has taken and look forward to its bright future.” What does the future hold for Morningstar? According to VanDerbeck, “One of the greatest challenges facing our leadership is the restoration of our buildings on the residential campus. We must bring our facilities up to match the quality of our services.” Morningstar will launch its capital effort later this year. Needs include new roofs, plumbing upgrades, and a complete overhaul of the gymnasium, the hub of the residential life on the campus of Morningstar. “We are going to need to call on the community to be generous in supporting the future of an amazing group of children,” added Lisa Johnson. On October 19, everyone will have the opportunity to see the magic behind the gates and help support the future of Morningstar at the second annual Dinner Under the Stars. The evening is all about showcasing local and sustainable foods. Highlighting local farmers of the land and the sea, the team from Halyards Catering will prepare a five-course feast and serve it up in a unique setting. The event begins at 6:00 p.m., and dinner seating is around 7:15. Suzy and the Bird Dogs, a popular local band, will be returning this year to entertain the crowd, so you’ll be able to dance under the stars. If you snag a ticket to the event, when you come through those historic gates, you can expect a culinary experience that is like no other. When Lisa Johnson accepted the position of Director of Development with Morningstar, she had been working with Dave Snyder and his team for several years, putting on events in other cities. She immediately knew that she wanted to showcase the talents of the Halyards team in their back yard. For the inaugural event in 2018, Dave reached out to local vendors like Sapelo Sea Farms and Canewater Farms to provide a fantastic experience for the 200 plus guests in attendance. Once again, Dave promises a few surprises and a menu that is perfection! (continues)

The event takes place around one of the most historic buildings on the property. Originally constructed as the welcome center for Santo Domingo State Park, today the building serves as the Morningstar Chapel. When you arrive, you will be struck by how expertly the property has been transformed into the backdrop for the evening. To set up the event, the committee mobilizes volunteers from as far away as Macon to assist with the three-day effort to build the venue. There will be chandeliers hanging from the historic live oaks, offering an opportunity for guests to see the beauty of the property, along with the artistry of the event. “Our friends at Beachview Tent Rental do a beautiful job with the outdoor dining room,” says Johnson. Beachview is one of many corporate sponsors. This year’s presenting sponsor is the Georgia Ports Authority. “We are so fortunate that GPA leadership connects with our mission,” Johnson noted. “Corporate sponsorships also pay for our residents to have a fun evening off campus during the event. This year Georgia Pacific’s sponsorship will defray costs of the children’s outing.” GP is a longtime partner with Morningstar. Every November, over 400 GP staff and retirees come to the campus for a dinner to celebrate their service. You are going to want to arrive in time to check out the silent auction. Planning for this event has been underway since March, and the

Dinner Under the Stars committee has put together an amazing auction including pieces from renowned artists Catherine Hillis and Sonia Grineva. Of course there would be art in the auction, the committee is chaired by Millie Wilcox, who is the second generation to serve on the Board of Boys’ Estate, the original children’s home established on the property. Millie’s mother, Mildred Huie, served on the Board as well. In addition to great art, there will be trips, chefs’ dinners, and handmade items from local artisans up for bids. Tickets are $100 per person or $800 for a reserved table of eight and are available at morningstarcfs.org/dus2019 or by calling 912.222.6463. Seating is limited to 275 guests. Don’t wait to get your tickets, last year was a sellout and this year will be too. Directions to

the event can be found on the Morningstar website. When you arrive on campus, volunteers will direct parking. Based on demand, there may be shuttle service available from St. Simons Island. Contact the Morningstar development team at 912.267.3700 ext. 2122 for further information. If you want to know more about the history of the Morningstar property, De-Leon Peacock, a Morningstar volunteer and former resident of Boys’ Estate has written a book chronicling the history of the property and his experiences as a resident. Entitled “Boys’ Estate Georgia 19461976 A Pictorial History of Georgia’s Town Just for Boys,” the book can be found in local bookstores. Property tours are available with advanced scheduling. ELEGANT ISLAND LIVING

NEW ATTRACTIONS CONTINUED TRADITIONS For more than a decade, celebrated chefs from around the state have gathered on Jekyll Island to compete for the coveted title of “Georgia’s Best Shrimp & Grits.”

T

he annual event that brings them here, now in its fourteenth year, earned a significant award of its own. The Jekyll Island Shrimp & Grits Festival was crowned “Best Festival in the Southeast” at the Southeast Festival and Events Association’s Kaleidoscope Awards earlier this year. It’s also been featured in numerous publications, including National Geographic, adding to the growing popularity of vacationers and visitors to the Golden Isles. The Shrimp & Grits Festival, taking place September 20-22, is still centered on the Southern seafood favorite, but has grown to include much more. A new addition to this year’s lineup is the Go for the Grits 5K race, which is billed as “one of the fastest and most scenic 5Ks in all of Georgia.” The September 22 race begins at 8:00 a.m. on the Jekyll Island Airport runway and takes runners on a course shaded by majestic live oaks into the island’s National Historic Landmark District. The first 200 run-

ners will receive a take-home bag of grits as they cross the finish line. And once there, all competitors are rewarded with early access to the festival before it opens to the public.

sented by the Georgia National Guard, and The Soccer Collies, a team of soccer-playing border collies, all making their Shrimp & Grits Festival debuts.

There are plenty of other ways to burn off those extra helpings of shrimp and grits at this year’s event. “Shrimp & Grits is a walking festival,” according to Nancy Kring-Rowan, director of events at the Jekyll Island Authority and lead organizer of the festival. She and her team have been measuring distances around the festival and will deploy new wayfinding signage indicating the number of steps between festival attractions, so festival goers can map out their activity. Those who need just a bit more motivation can enter the Workout Anytime Brunswick Step Challenge and compete for memberships and other prizes. Whether they enter the challenge or not, attendees will definitely get their steps in with so much to see and do. In addition to the 5K, attendees can experience a Shrimp & Grits Dolphin Tour presented by Jekyll Island Boat Tours, an escape room pre-

The Georgia Grown Alley focuses on the state’s agricultural treasures with 43 vendors offering handmade provisions, baked goods, seasonings, honey, grits, spirits, essential oils, soaps, and more. In addition, nearly 100 artists working in pottery, glass, jewelry, painting, photography, textiles, and woodworking have been selected for the festival’s Artists Market. “The quality of the artwork at this year’s market will be exceptional,” Kring-Rowan said, “This year, Sunshine Artist Magazine, America’s premier art and craft show publication, named Shrimp & Grits one of the top 200 arts and crafts markets in the United States.” Dozens of artists of the musical variety will also perform throughout the festival on four stages. Younger guests will flock to the Kids Zone, where a variety of inflatable slides, bounce houses, and agility games await. (continues)

The best way to experience all the festival has to offer, according to Kring-Rowan, is as a VIP. While entry to the Shrimp & Grits Festival is free, a limited number of tickets available for purchase online allow access to the Atlanta magazine VIP Lounge. This “exclusive festival retreat” offers a host of perks including on-site festival parking; access to an elegant private area when you can keep you cool and enjoy unlimited beer and wine, and non-alcoholic beverages, provided by Southern Eagle Distributing and Coca-Cola, catered meals and snacks, phonecharging stations, and a private, air-conditioned bathroom. VIP tickets also include entry to Craft Brew Fest, a “festival within a festival,” sponsored by Southern Eagle Distributing. Tickets for Brew Fest, which can be purchased separately, include 10 tastings, a souvenir glass, snacks, a big screen TV to view the weekend games, live music, and private restrooms.“VIP Lounge and Craft Brew are literally hot tickets,” KringRowan said. “Demand is high, so we encourage people to buy theirs early.” Even with so many new festival activities being added and old favorites returning, our beloved coastal delicacy Wild Georgia shrimp remains at the heart of the Shrimp & Grits Festival. Chef Liz Morris of Statesboro’s Eagle Creek Brewing Company will return to defend her Best Shrimp & Grits title, squaring off against

noted chefs from around the state in Georgia’s Best Shrimp & Grits Cooking Competition, presented by Quaker. The 2016 champion, Chef Andrew Smith of Atlanta’s West Egg Café, is also returning after finishing second last year, in what’s sure to be a thrilling rematch with Morris. Eight other contenders span from as far away as the North Georgia Mountains. Cooking will truly become a spectator sport as the chefs bring their singular creations to life using fresh Georgia shrimp, all in front of the festival audience. The competition will be judged by a trio of culinary luminaries: award-winning chef and cookbook author Chef Virginia Willis, Executive Chef for the Georgia Departments of Agriculture and Economic Development Holly Chute, and Chef Todd White, department chair and instructor at Albany Technical College’s Culinary Department. Elsewhere, there’s delicious food everywhere you turn from the Georgia Grown Alley to the main lawn food court, where 15 vendors will serve Latin cuisine, pizza, chicken and waffles, frozen yogurt, adult ice pops, and more. Shrimp and grits specialists, including local establishments like the Jekyll Island Club Resort, will be serving the festival’s sig-

nature dish on the Riverfront Lawn, along with other crowd-pleasing favorites. On the opening night of the festival, guests can purchase a sample of shrimp and grits from each vendor for half price and help a worthy cause. “We have a fun twist to the People’s Choice event with the help of the Jekyll Island Rotary Club. On Friday Sept. 20 from 5-8:30 p.m. on the Riverfront Lawn, our guests can purchase a half price portion of shrimp and grits and vote for their favorite recipe for only $1 per vote. The Riverfront Lawn vendor with the most money in their jar by 8:30 p.m. will win the People’s Choice Award. All proceeds from this competition will go to the Jekyll Island Rotary Club.” According to Jekyll Island Authority Events Coordinator Erin Evors, the festival’s success is a credit to the more than 300 JIA employees and 200 volunteers who pull together and work tirelessly to produce delightful and delicious experience for guests. “They are passionate about Jekyll Island. They love greeting firsttime visitors and welcoming back familiar faces to our community,” she said. After 2019, the Shrimp & Grits festival will be on the move. It’s not changing locations, just dates, to become a November event going forward, when the weather is cooler. The 2020 Shrimp & Grits Festival will be held November 6-8. It’s never too early to put it on your calendar! For more information about the Jekyll Island Shrimp & Grits Festival or to purchase tickets, visit jekyllisland.com/shrimpgrits.

The Southern Soul BBQ Dinner Thursday, October 3, from 7:30-10:00 p.m. is described as the “boozy BBQ kickoff event to the weekend’s Firebox festivities.” This year, author & chef EDDIE HERNANDEZ from the celebrated Taqueria del Sol empire of restaurants will be the featured guest. Chef Eddie and restaurateur Mike Klank will join SSBQ in the kitchen and Smokehouse to create a spread that pairs up perfectly with Wild Heaven Beer’s taps and Virgil Kaine’s bourbons. For the 6th consecutive year, Sarah Young with the awardwinning Wild Heaven Brewery and David Szlam, founder and proprietor of Virgil Kaine Distilling will be in the house. Tickets are $65 per person, all food and beverage included.

Kevin Pettingill, general manager of Driftwood Bistro, was another recipient of assistance from Firebox. “I want to thank Griffin Bufkin and Harrison & Kitty Sapp for creating an organization to help service industry people in their time of need. It definitely relieved some major stress during my medical issues.” He continues, “Having such wonderful, kind and caring people like them and Firebox in our community to help me in such a time of need, truly means the world to me. hen you walk through the doors of Heller Healthcare, you feel like family. Stepping into Dr. Jennifer Heller’s office feels less like visiting a medical center and more like entering a friend’s home. And she’s just fine with that. No sliding glass window or sterile waiting room here; instead, the front desk staff will greet you by name and, better yet, the clinical staff will not only know how to care for you and your health, but also know all about you as an individual. “As silly as it may sound, we ask patients what kind of hot tea that they like on their consultation day, and then have it ready for them for their following visits. It’s a great way to get to know our patients and make that connection with them,” Heller said. The office is open and inviting with a “living room” offering comfortable seating accented with plush pillows. A separate counter in the back of the waiting area is reserved for Jenny Sharpe, a Nurse Practitioner, and Kasey Miller, Physician Assistant, who head up the office’s medical side, providing a number of innovative and alternative treatments along with traditional medicine. There’s even an area for adult “time outs,” with tables for relaxing while waiting for treatments if you so choose. Heller’s passion and commitment to go above and beyond for her patients is not only reflected by her staff, and a comfortable and relaxed atmosphere, but also by a new type of healthcare system. A reimagined healthcare system with fresh new options is exactly what Heller wanted and needed for her family and she decided to also make it available to the Golden Isles by opening the doors of Heller Healthcare in 2015. She explained, “I put programs and care options in place that I want for my family. I figure if I want this care for my family, I’m sure others would benefit from it as well.” Her reasoning was on point, because the practice has been thriving ever since. The Heller Healthcare approach is different than the traditional medical standard. Heller and her incredible staff work together to provide patients with a well-rounded and coordinated care plans, bringing healthcare full circle. Imagine having a combined, centralized network of healthcare professionals for every stage of health management. From your sick care visits to new injuries or chronic pain, hormone or thyroid imbalances to weight loss and nutritional imbalances, Heller Healthcare’s integrative (continues) ABOVE (left): Dr. Jennifer Heller and Jenny Sharpe, Nurse Practitioner

approach to healthcare allows her team to work in unison and treat a patient as a whole, offering a variety of programs to comprehensively tackle health issues. By shifting the traditional focus of medicine to a more patient-centered approach, Heller’s team addresses the whole person, not just an isolated set of symptoms. Dr. Heller says, “It’s so great when a patient walks through the door that has suffered with chronic pain for so long to finally get relief in a very short time without jumping to medications and traditional injections, but utilizing a multidisciplinary approach of conservative care. Specifically for many of our pain patients, if we can get their joints moving through chiropractic care, their soft tissue more soft (muscles, tendons, facia), correct their structure as much as possible and then use our physical and occupational therapists to stabilize and strengthen the body, we see lasting results with not only pain relief, but improved balance, strength, mobility, and frankly, an improved quality of life and attitude!” Heller Healthcare specializes in traditional, integrative, regenerative and functional medicine. They offer a wide range of care, all under one roof, that includes physical therapy, occupational therapy, stem cell therapy, bio-iden40

tical hormone optimization, physician guided weight loss, advanced diagnostic testing, chiropractic care, massage therapy, and neuromuscular therapy all in a combined approach. Dr. Heller explains, “So many people have tried chiropractic care or physical therapy and think to themselves, well that didn’t work or that it was just too painful to do. They think their body has failed them or that the medical system has failed them. But what would happen if a combination of treatments at just the right time was implemented? What would happen if multiple providers discussed that particular patient’s gains and struggles on a daily basis, treatment by treatment, and were able to tweak and change their approach in the moment based on how the patient is progressing that day? No more faxing and waiting for a follow up appointment in 2 weeks to find out if there’s something else that can be done. Find out that day, in that moment.” At Heller Healthcare, the treatment is focused on you as a person, not just your chronic sinus infection, bone on bone knee pain, or chronic fatigue and sleeping issues. They map out a custom care plan tailored to each patient. This approach allows them to use whatever treatment/discipline, or combination of treatments/disciplines, is best suited to each individual patient to achieve optimal results. A comprehensive blood analysis that they call “The Compass” is utilized along with food allergy testing to get to the core of any inflammatory or disease process that is enhancing the patient’s symptoms. Heller notes, “Patients with physical stress (pain, balance issues, headaches, arthritis, difficulty losing weight) are commonly not tested for issues with their chemical stress. Hormone imbalances along with nutritional deficits or food intolerances will create a whole host of pain, swelling, and fatigue symptoms and will derail any good physical treatment plan from the beginning.”

that steals away parts of your life. It can make it hard to do basically anything including work, sleep, and being with friends and family. They also understand that many times health goals can be challenging, intimidating, and hard to face on your own. Heller believes it’s all about a team approach and want patients to know they don’t have to face these hurdles alone. As

performed, the patient and providers of the office agree on a plan and goals are set. Not to worry, testing will be performed after a series of regular visits to ensure the best results possible. “Test, treat, communicate; test, treat, communicate; that’s our motto,” Heller said. Heller Healthcare offers all their modalities under one roof, which include their own urgent and sick care department, an in-house physical and occupational therapy department, and chiropractic care and massage.

Heller’s medical side the offers functional medicine including physician guided weight loss, bioidentical hormone optimization, advanced diagnostic testing and regenerative medicine (stem cell therapy). “We do a lot of anti-inflammatory, anti-arthritis, and stem cell treatments for our patients who really want to correct their spine and reverse arthritis as much as possible. Down here, it’s so nice out, people want to be outside moving. They want to keep playing golf or tennis and we want to help them do that.” Heller said. “Stem cell therapy is used to help regenerate joints. If conservative and functional medicine is not enough and the joint is so degenerated that they need something more, we will

a million times greater in quantity and thousands of times more potent than stem cells taken from an aged body. This also makes it a less-invasive treatment with fewer steps since your own stem cells are not harvested from your body. Decreasing the amount of processes causes HUCT stem cell therapy injections to be vastly more affordable. It is a quick, painless, outpatient procedure performed by the medical staff of Heller Healthcare’s office. The stem cells are injected into the patient’s problem area(s) and within 28 hours those cells will have attached to the inflamed and degenerated tissue, doubled, and already started the process of regenerative medicine. This doubling process of every 28 hours continues

stem cell it, adjust it and then rehab it,” she explained. When stem cells are injected into tissue or joints they support the natural healing process by regenerating that tissue and stimulating the body’s natural healing and anti-inflammatory processes. “Stem cell therapy is a great alternative to surgery,” stated Dr. Heller, “But most of all, it’s a “one-and-done” in-office procedure with no recovery time.” This fits right into the typical busy lifestyle that we all have.

for three months to change and regenerate the joints, arthritis, and tissue until new, healthy tissue has formed and replaced the old, degenerated tissue. After the stem cells have been injected, the amount of chiropractic, massage, and/or rehabilitative treatments needed to assist change and enhancement of the results varies by a patient’s needs and goals to achieve optimal results.

Stem cell therapy can be used anywhere in the body where there is joint pain, arthritis, muscle or tendon damage. Heller Healthcare uses Human Umbilical Cord Tissue (HUCT) stem cells, which are derived from the consented, donated umbilical cords from healthy mothers who birthed healthy babies. The amount of stem cells from a newborn’s umbilical cord are

ELEGANT ISLAND LIVING

Welcome to the Amazing 37th Season of The Coastal Symphony of Georgia

T

he kaleidoscope has been part of our cultural landscape since the early 1800s, when a Scottish inventor named his intriguing invention after Greek words meaning “beautiful form watcher.” Since then, this charming instrument of recreation has delighted children as a toy and adults as a uniquely crafted art form. The constant shifting patterns of jewel tone colors somehow challenge and yet satisfy our aesthetic appreciation of a continuing disparity that coalesces into infinite patterns of loveliness. Michelle Merrill, Musical Director and Conductor of The Coastal Symphony of Georgia, obviously knows something about the delights of kaleidoscopic effect; her four 2019-20 concert season programs epitomize the technique of juxtaposing contrasting musical offerings to create a composite lyrical image, asking the audience to participate as beautiful form listeners. And so, not surprisingly, the September 23 concert commences with contemporary composer Jared Miller and the “shiny, bejeweled colors and timbres” of Luster. Then with a twist of the evening progression, George Gershwin takes over the varying pattern with his lesser known Lullaby and then the iconic favorite, An American in Paris. Ravel’s lilting La Valse is next, followed by his Mother Goose Suite, concluding the program and delightfully preparing the audience for the next performance. The December 2 concert picks up the thematic thread with just a slight turn, progressing from nursery rhyme to fairy tale: Humperdinck’s Hansel and Gretel welcomes us with strong

melodic passages, including the beloved children’s prayer, “When at Night I Go to Sleep.” Hummel’s Trumpet Concerto in D changes the color dramatically, featuring soloist Tristan Clark’s virtuoso trumpet performance throughout the orchestral music. The high energy of Hummel then segues to the familiar holiday perennial, with selections from Tchaikovsky’s The Nutcracker Ballet. Haydn’s Symphony No. 84 in E-flat Major launches the March 2 program, setting up the inevitable tonal contrast of the next offering, Jessie Montgomery’s Starburst, a composition that blends classical chamber music with folk and spiritual motifs. Caroline Shaw, who won the Pulitzer Prize for Music in 2013, acknowledges Haydn’s influence with a contemporary piece, Entr’acte, that captures mini-jeweled bits of Classical and Baroque. And then comes Mozart, re-coloring the program image and embracing the 18th Century with his Symphony No. 39 in E-flat Major. The kaleidoscopic features of the Symphony’s 37th season resonate strongly and imaginatively in the final concert on April 13. The entire program is an eclectic banquet of astounding musical contrasts. C. T. Griffe’s White Peacock offers an impressionistic piece that prepares the way for the colorful

performance of viola soloist, Brett Deubner, in Joan Tower’s orchestral Purple Rhapsody; Deubner continues with Bruch’s Romanze for Viola. Ginaster’s dances from Estancia then send us off to the life of Argentinian gauchos. And as if that were not contrast enough, Stravinsky’s Polka for a Young Elephant and The Firebird Suite send us flying into musical colorations that end with an inspiring finale of celebration and triumph. The best news of all? In addition to the 201920 concert season offerings, the Symphony’s musical kaleidoscope keeps on whirling and twirling this year, presenting additional events and venues with plentiful variety and instrumental excellence. Mark your calendars for Terry Readdick’s family friendly Holiday Piano Recital at Christ Church on the afternoon of December 8 and watch for continuing colorful SoundBites events at various locales throughout the Golden Isles. The Symphony’s website provides a reliable resource for admission to all calendar events. This season’s kaleidoscope of artistic richness and color will both entertain and also remind audiences of the rewarding power of music in all its infinite expressions. The mission of the Coastal Symphony of Georgia is to engage, enrich, and inspire the community through artistically vibrant musical performances. Hurricane Preparedness Insurance Style

b y A n d r e w Tu r n e r , Risk Management Advisor

O

ver the last few years, the Golden Isles has had its fair share of storms. We took some high winds from Hermine, a beating from Matthew, and wind and waves from Irma. We even had an ice storm in early 2018 that caused some damage and a power outage. The Weather Channel, local news anchors, and all of your neighbors will tell you to buy a generator, have plenty of water, and stock up on supplies to prepare for hurricane season. But I’m here to tell you that the time to prepare for hurricanes isn’t June 1st. It isn’t when you see a hurricane out in the Atlantic. And it isn’t when the authorities tell you to evacuate. The best time to prepare for hurricanes is when you purchase your homeowners insurance!

44

ELEGANT ISLAND LIVING

When a hurricane has its sights set on St. Simons and the Golden Isles, there is nothing you can do to stop it, but if you have done your due diligence and purchased a good homeowners policy, your home can be replaced or any damage repaired. When purchasing homeowners insurance there are three main things you should consider when comparing quotes and companies: First, you want to choose a company that has an A rating by A.M. Best. A.M. Best is the only global credit rating agency with a unique focus

on the insurance industry. Best’s Credit Ratings, which are issued through A.M. Best Rating Services, Inc., are a recognized indicator of insurer financial strength and creditworthiness. This is especially important after a catastrophe. You want to know that the company who writes your insurance has the financial stability to pay your claim. You can search companies and learn more about the ratings at ambest.com.

Secondly, you should make sure your policy covers wind damage. Some companies exclude wind coverage in coastal Georgia. Hopefully, your policy includes wind coverage and you probably have a special wind deductible. There are 3 different types of wind deductibles: wind/hail, named storm, and hurricane. The broadest wind-related deductible is the wind/hail deductible which is assessed if you have damage from any type of wind or hail. A named storm deductible is only assessed if you have damage resulting from a storm that has been named by the National Weather Service. And finally, the hurricane deductible is assessed only if damage is the result of a storm classified as a hurricane when it makes landfall. Knowing what type of deductible is on your homeowners policy will help you make informed decisions about whether to file a claim after your house has sustained damage. Currently in coastal Georgia, most properties qualify for a two percent wind-related deductible. This means that when you have a loss from wind, your deductible is 2% of your dwelling (or building) amount. For example, if your home is insured for $500,000 then it carries a $10,000 wind related deductible. Many people that I talk to have the misconception that the 2% deductible

means that the deductible is 2% of the loss, i.e. “I have a $10,000 loss and then my deductible should be 2% of the loss, which is $200.” That is simply not the case and can lead to frustration when misunderstood. Last, but not least, make certain that you have insured the home to the full replacement cost value. Every day when speaking to potential clients, when asked what they think the replacement cost of their home is, the first thing many people say is, “I paid X for it.” The purchase price of a house is its market value, which is a separate valuation from replacement cost. Maybe when you bought your house, the sellers were highly motivated, and you got a good deal. That doesn’t change the cost of rebuilding or replacing the house after a loss. Also consider that the land value, which was part of the purchase price, cannot be insured. Now imagine a scenario in which we have just been hit by a major storm: countless homes have sustained damage and many property owners will be looking to rebuild or repair at the same time. A limited labor force and limited building materials coupled with high demand means that the cost of rebuilding will be higher than usual. A house that cost $500,000

to build before the storm might cost $600,000 or $700,000 to replace after a hurricane. It is not only important to insure to replacement value but to have a conversation with your agent about extended replacement cost. Extended replacement cost coverage gives you additional coverage beyond the dwelling amount. Having an open discussion with your agent about this optional coverage endorsement could make the difference between being able to rebuild your home or not. By far the best way to prepare for a hurricane is to buy your homeowners insurance from the experts. Influence to Inspire Rev. Billy Graham once said, “A coach will impact more people in one year than the average person will in an entire lifetime.”

rounded in Rev. Graham’s philosophy, the mission of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) is to “lead every coach and athlete into a growing relationship with Jesus Christ and His church.” For more than six decades, professional athletes and coaches have been involved in FCA through ministry events, speaking engagements, camps, volunteer opportunities and leadership roles. Athletes and coaches from both major and minor professional sports and top-tier college programs have engaged with FCA to communicate their Christian faith and participate in community outreach opportunities. One of FCA’s biggest supporters is our own local sports star, St. Louis Cardinals pitcher Adam Wainwright. Now in his 19th season of professional baseball, Adam has been involved with FCA since his high school days at Glynn Academy, and has participated in countless events for the organization, not only nationally, but here

locally. He is the perfect example of how the local FCA chapter here in Glynn County can literally influence millions of people. EIL Publisher David Butler recounts his involvement with FCA: “As a 9th grader at Glynn Academy, I was introduced to FCA by my football coach, Coach Pruitt. Watching the older players in the FCA team meetings was a big influence on me. Each year I got a little more involved and by my senior year I was president of the Glynn Academy FCA chapter. My good friend, Mike Covington, who I met the first day of football practice our freshman year, was the vice president. Nearly 40 years later we’re still great friends and I owe much of that to our time together with FCA. In fact, it was through Mike that I met Tim Harden, the current local president of FCA. Tim is doing an amazing job and I’m excited to see how involved the students of Glynn County are with this wonderful organization.” He adds,

“Not every athlete can be a professional athlete like Adam Wainwright, but every athlete CAN be a Fellowship of Christian Athlete.” Since its founding in 1954, this international non-profit Christian sports ministry has been challenging coaches and athletes (continues) TOP: FCA Area Representative Chandler Norris, Golden Isles FCA President Tim Harden. from all levels of sports to use their influence and the powerful medium of athletics to impact the world spiritually. Currently FCA’s global ministry reaches more than two million athletes and coaches and has ministry personnel in more than 450 U.S. offices and 62 countries. The Golden Isles FCA serves each of Glynn County’s public middle and high schools as well as Frederica Academy and the College of Coastal Georgia. Golden Isles FCA President Tim Harden explains, “FCA is a strategic ministry designed to influence the influencers – our local coaches and athletes. We serve as both a beacon of light for God’s Kingdom and a link for connecting them with the Church family in our community.” FCA does this through “The 4 C’s”: Coaches, Campus, Camp, and Community Ministries. Coaches Ministry focuses on ministering to the heart of the coach first, and then through the coach by engaging them with Coaches Huddles, Camps and Retreats. Coaches are the heart of FCA. Most coaches address the physical dimension of the athlete: their strength, fitness, conditioning, technique and strategy. A few address a second dimension: motivation, confidence and team cohesion. Yet fewer still address a third dimension: identity, purpose, and character. FCA aims to improve those numbers by providing the 3D Coaching program (an approach designed for coaches by a coach to reach and influence the body, mind, and spirit of the athlete) to coaches for free. The goal is to help change the relationship coaches have with their players from transactional to transformational. Glynn Academy Varsity Boys Soccer Coach Bobby Brockman shares, “Locally, I’ve been part of a coaches bible study that really opened my eyes to what’s important as a coach, and it’s not wins and losses. Tim Harden is an amazing leader of FCA in our area and someone who I really look up to and learn a lot from every time I’m around him. I also have had fantas-

tic team chaplains who FCA lined up for my team and the bond they have with my players is special to see. The chaplain will discuss Biblical verses and how they are intertwined in our goals as a team and how they make each person better. It’s great to see players mature in the time they spend in high school as well as their faith journey and FCA is here to help foster that. Regionally, I’ve been to Black Mountain, NC for FCA coaches camp with my family and we all left there with a renewed sense of purpose and peace. I met many coaches that week who I would see on sidelines on Saturdays coaching college football and was amazed at how down to earth these guys were and how welcoming they were to a high school soccer coach. It was a real blessing to get to know these coaches and learn about the journey they have been on. I can’t say enough about how blessed I feel to have FCA supporting me, fellow coaches, and, ultimately, students in changing lives forever.” Campus Ministry on middle, high school or college campuses is initiated and led on a regular basis by student-athletes with the support of faculty advisors called “huddle leaders.” FCA focuses on engaging, equipping, and empowering student-athletes, coaches and adult leaders to impact and influence their campus for Christ. Brunswick High School Golf Coach Drew Culpepper explains, “FCA helps take sports past the field, it’s bigger than the game.” Mike Covington said that for him,

“FCA was a great organization that helped athletes remember what was really important in life and how to remain grounded in both good and difficult times.” Camp Ministry provides a time of “inspiration and perspiration.” FCA gives athletes and coaches the opportunity to reach their Godgiven potential by offering comprehensive athletic, spiritual and leadership training in a sports camp environment. Harden says, “Team camps help our young athletes grow in character and return prepared to serve as leaders on their home teams and school campuses.” Brunswick High School Head Girls’ Basketball Coach Maria Mangram stated, “I had the opportunity to take my team to FCA camp this summer at Georgia Southern University. The experience was amazing. I was so excited to see myself, my family, and my team grow spiritually. The team building sessions were awesome to witness. I saw my team strategizing and working together to attain one main goal. My favorite moment from FCA was watching my son Damare rededicate his life to Christ on his birthday. FCA will always have a special place in my heart!” Holly Carter recalls her camp experience as a student-athlete, “As a high school student I attended FCA camp in Black Mountain, NC. It was an experience that changed my life. I learned the importance of daily (continues)

spending time focusing on God. The Bible I received at camp has been my security on almost every mission trip, Children’s camp, and Vacation Bible School I have attended. Now as a high school teacher and mother, I pray that my students and my children find the grace and peace I found on top of that mountain. I feel privileged to be a huddle leader and have an opportunity to give back to FCA.” Community Ministry is off-campus ministry that reaches coaches and athletes through club and recreational sports environments. Today, the vast majority of athletes play sports in community (non-school) programs. FCA is expanding here to join coaches and athletes where they are. Luanne Fendig described FCA’s role in her life: “Weaving in and out over a 40 year period, FCA has been the organization that has given me the key to life and allowed me to share

that key with others. From being a student in a huddle to being a teacher huddle leader, I have had the opportunity to receive the gift that FCA offers. My dad was the head football coach at McEachern High School, and every summer some wonderful donor would pay for the football team and family of the coaches to go to Black Mountain, NC to FCA camp. It was there that I learned about a loving, gracious God. The talks at night, the fun, competitive games as group or huddle, and the atmosphere of humor, all showed me that there was so much more to being a Christian. While at an FCA camp, I gave my life to Christ. During high school and college, FCA would be the organization that met once a week to hold me accountable and offer fellowship. As a high school cheerleader and softball player, I could lead by serving, an example of Christ. FCA continued to influence those things in which I participated by teaching and guiding me.” Now a middle school huddle leader, she says,

“Playing games, meaningful lessons, worshipful singing, and going to Christian concerts all made up the huddle at our school. In a place where prayer is not allowed, and yet we need prayer to get through the day, we need FCA. In a place where children come to school anxious and scared, we need FCA. In a place where we don’t know who we are yet, we need FCA.” FCA needs the support of the community to extend their ministry. Sponsoring coaches, athletes, and teams to attend camps and providing them with Bibles and other resources requires FCA to raise funds. Businesses and individuals can assist through financial partnership or by volunteering to help with fundraising efforts and events. FCA also seeks volunteers from within our community who love God, kids, and sports to serve as Character Coaches for local teams. If you are interested in any of these opportunities, please call 912.279.0807 or email tharden@fca.org.

hen HunterMaclean, a leading business law firm based in Savannah, Georgia, expanded to Brunswick in 2002, the office included one attorney and one paralegal. That office has since grown to eight attorneys and four staff members and recently moved to St. Simons Island. Longtime Glynn County resident Ben Hartman has been an attorney with HunterMaclean since 2011 and is heavily

involved with the community. Current vicechair of the Brunswick-Golden Isles Chamber of Commerce, Ben says he is “excited to see the growth affiliated with our business community and delighted to be part of a firm committed to encouraging development for our region.” On July 29th, HunterMaclean officially opened its office at 455 Sea Island Road. The firm is one of three businesses in the newly constructed, stand-alone building. The convenient location, Hartman says, provides more accessibility for clients. Attorney Chris Jordan agrees and believes the location will benefit clients in other ways. “Our new office is centrally located, easy to find, and in a great area,” Jordan says. “Additionally, law firm workspaces have evolved quite a bit over the years, and we have tried to maximize our efficiencies. For example, in designing our new space, we were able to increase our conference room capacity, upgrade our IT platform, and streamline our workspaces.” All of which, Jordan explains, are improvements that ultimately will benefit HunterMaclean’s clients. While moving an entire office is unavoidably disruptive, everyone at HunterMaclean has been enthusiastic throughout the construction and relocation. “Our staff has been incredible, and the support from our Savannah office has been equally invaluable,” says Jordan. The team is excited to see it all come together and proud to welcome clients and the community to the new office. HunterMaclean’s presence has grown considerably

in recent years, and Jordan notes that the new location is both a reflection of that fact and an important step forward within the Golden Isles community. Hartman echoes that, adding, “HunterMaclean is able to offer families and businesses a deep Ben Hartman bench of attorneys with decades of experience in estate planning, real estate, litigation, employment, environmental law, corporate law, logistics, intellectual property, taxation, cybersecurity, health care, and other practice areas. We are local and invested in our community.” As Glynn County and coastal Georgia continue to grow, Jordan expects that many of HunterMaclean’s clients—from large companies to families and individuals—will be best served by a law firm with experience across a wide range of legal disciplines. Jordan explains, “we feel uniquely positioned to offer that kind of service, as our attorneys specialize in many different areas and routinely collaborate to help address multidisciplinary issues for our clients.” HunterMaclean 455 Sea Island Road St. Simons Island, GA 31522 912.262.5996 www.huntermaclean.com

5 YEARS OF GOING GOLD September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month and, for the 5th (and final) year, Gnat’s Landing will go gold in support of that cause. Why? Because every day in the U.S., an average of 43 children under 20 are diagnosed with cancer. Because a quarter of them will not survive the disease. Because despite the fact that cancer is the #1 disease killer of children in this country, it only receives 4% of federal government cancer research funding. Because children and families in our community are affected. You can help by coming out to Gnat’s Landing Friday, September 20 to participate in the annual Redfern Goes Gold event. A War Measured in Months, Not Years

F

or twelve weeks in 1898, the United States came to the aid of Cuban nationals fighting for independence from Spain in a conflict that would become known as the Spanish American War. America initially steered clear of involvement, in spite of the heavy toll that disruption in trade with Cuba was taking on U.S. shipping interests. Public opinion shifted when a massive explosion on February 15, 1898, destroyed the U.S. Navy cruiser Maine, anchored in Havana harbor. Over 250 sailors were killed. Succumbing to a public outcry to “Remember the Maine!,” President William McKinley asked Congress to declare war on Spain in April. The state of Georgia quickly answered the call to arms by providing both troops and training camp locations. In addi-

tion, infantry units from other states were stationed along the coast to protect against a possible Spanish invasion. On St. Simons Island, a temporary encampment known as Camp Gordon was set up near the lighthouse. As many as six companies of the 2nd North Carolina Volunteer Infantry were stationed there from the beginning of August until mid-September, though a cease-fire was signed on August 12.

E. Lee’s Army of Northern Virginia, thanked the residents for their gracious hospitality and commended his men for “conducting yourselves like soldiers and gentlemen.” The following day, the troops left by train for Raleigh and “Camp Gordon became but a memory.”

On Sunday, September 11, the last dress parade was held at Camp Gordon, and a large crowd of Brunswick residents gathered to bid the North Carolina troops farewell. As described in the September 13 edition of the Brunswick Times, the commanding officer, Colonel William Burgwyn, a Civil War veteran who had served in Robert

An image from the Coastal Georgia Historical Society archives shows the troops enjoying a barbeque provided by the residents of Brunswick. Also shown is construction of a battery for defense of St. Simons Sound, located on the property of Captain F.D.M. Strachan, west of the Village Pier.
