You Only Live Once, But if You Do it Right, Once is Enough.

What does it mean to live a life well lived? Everyone has a slightly different definition of what makes for a life well-lived. To me, it means that you are living a happy life of which you are proud. A life you live by your standards. A life that is filled with happiness, achievement, a positive impact and legacy.

We all learn by example. As kids, our parents, teachers, coaches, etc. help build our character. There are always some people who have a positive effect on our lives. And there are possibly a few people who we look at and truly admire. If we are lucky, we come across someone in our lifetime who not only has a positive effect on us and we truly admire, but we want to emulate. In short, someone who is exceptional.

Exceptional people radiate a sense of inner elegance and are graceful even amidst a challenge. They are able to handle themselves in a noble and ethical manner. I met such an exceptional person when I was 8 years old and for the past 52 years I have had the fortune to witness a shining example of a “life well lived.” I lost my “life mentor” last week. Now, as I sit here at the computer with tears in my eyes, I just want to say, “Thank you, Anne Hodnett, for a life well lived!”

With visitors flocking to spring festivities and plentiful events like the CASA Fashion Show & Luncheon and Cassina Garden Club’s Tabby & Tillandsia Garden Walk, it’s also the time we want to freshen up our homes and yards so we can entertain in style. Here in the pages of our annual Home & Garden issue, you’ll find tips from experts about indoor and outdoor projects, a preview of the Garden Walk, and a splash of color.

ANNUAL CASSINA GARDEN CLUB TABBY & TILLANDSIA GARDEN WALK

April 29 and Garden Walk Co-Chairs

The 17th annual event will occur on Saturday, April 29 and Garden Walk Co-Chairs Judie Mattie and Julie Sellers say this year’s Garden Walk, featuring six gorgeous private gardens on St. Simons Island, is one you won’t want to miss! Guests are also invited to visit the Demere Butterfly Garden and enjoy the Garden Party and Members Cultivated Plant Sale at the Hamilton Plantation Tabby Cabins located on Gascoigne Bluff (1195 Arthur J. Moore Drive) from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Each garden included on the Garden Walk reflects the homeowners’ love of nature and tells a unique story of its own. Don’t worry if you’re not particularly plant savvy, docents will be available at each location to provide information on garden designs, features, and plantings. Those with both green and not-so-green thumbs will find inspiration in the wide variety of sights.

There are two homes in Frederica: “High Heel Farms” is a showstopping estate garden. The owner is a devoted garden and beekeeper, so you won’t want to miss seeing her raised-bed hobby garden and the “shed” where she does her planting and potting and harvests the honey from hives located in the Frederica Community Garden. But before you get there, abundant native plants welcome you along the impressive driveway or byway of meandering paths. The pool area features a walkway of hand-crafted brick pavers, manicured lawn, beds of tropical plantings, and overflowing urns of seasonal color. They provide a perfect tableau for viewing from the screened porch, pool house, guest house, or simply the pool deck and adjacent outdoor kitchen. Around the corner is an expansive lawn flanked by stunning antique urns and a table overlooking Frederica Lake.

“Perfect Porches” is the moniker chosen to describe the Southern brick charmer that awaits beyond the expansive lawn and brick coping edge that approach wide welcoming porches with billowing pots. The landscape here is strong on form and function with a large bed of seasonal plantings, antique syrup kettle planter, and dramatic “Little Gem” Magnolia trees. The rear of the property boasts a magnificent hedge of Awabuki. An outdoor kitchen and screened in porch are ideal for year-round entertaining. The manicured terrace beckons visitors to cool off in its plunge pool on hot summer days. Easy coastal living at its finest!

Head to The Commons to see a compact yet charming space defined by hardscapes with rock, iron, and brick among the materials used. Juniper and firecracker plants buzzing with hummingbirds greet you at the entrance to this secret garden. Through the architectural garden gate, you’ll find a kitchen garden filled with vegetables. The garden owners have incorporated recycled Brunswick brick, pavers and curb stones into pathways, a barbeque pit, a poolside cabana, and a children’s playhouse. Fragrant vines and citrus trees welcome birds and butterflies while guests of the human variety will be charmed and enchanted by the pool with trickling waterfall and goldfish pond nearby. Sunny pathways are filled with colorful plants and collected garden ornaments while huge staghorn ferns and a Lady Sago Palm inhabit the small shady spot.

In Black Banks, you’ll see a stunning renovation rich with the charm of coastal living. A pergola gate lush with jasmine is framed by queen palms, cabbage palms and African Iris. A circular path leads to a modern fire pit surrounded by Bismarck palms showing off their spectacular silvery gray fronds. Large containers of Agave and the ever-gold grasses of Carex accent the sparkling pool. This inviting garden entreats you to stay and enjoy this playful area.

Always open to the public, the Butterfly Garden at Demere Park has been the site of extensive redesign and maintenance by the Live Oak Garden Club. The garden’s major redesign took place in 2019 when more than 200 new plants were installed to attract and welcome the types of butterflies that call St. Simons Island home and encourage all four stages of their development. Butterflies can lay their eggs on the plentiful milkweed while abundant flowers provide food and water. The stationary butterflies you see “flying” throughout the garden were painted by local artist, Karen Keene Braswell, and represent the four most common butterflies that visit our island: Monarch, Tiger Swallowtail, Gulf Fritillary, and Painted Lady. Everyone is welcome to stop by and visit this tranquil spot which is enjoyed by many walkers and parents of children playing softball and skateboarding at the park.

Cabins at Gascoigne Bluff, there will be the Members Plant Sale and a Garden Party, featuring live by Annie Akins and plein air artists creating colorful canvases on site. You do not need a ticket to attend. Tours of the cabins will be available during this time as well. Proceeds from the Garden Walk and Plant Sale will help maintain and preserve Cassina’s historic Tabby Cabins and gardens.

Homeownership is considered the largest source of wealth for most Americans and when it comes to selling your home, the first impression is the only impression. You get one chance to set the tone for the home. Psychologically, when a buyer sees a home that looks pulled together, they walk in with a positive impression.

The common goal of homeowners when deciding to sell their home is generally to get the most money in the shortest amount of time. When you’re preparing to put your home on the market, you may want to consider which updates yield the largest return on investment. Should you paint? Remodel a bathroom? Add a pool in the backyard? The list goes on and on.

When updating the interior of your home, there are even more options. Understanding your market is important when making these selections, as this will play into what you’re able to recoup. For instance, renovating a kitchen is often the most expensive in terms of construction, but can also yield a large return if you don’t upgrade beyond what is considered the norm for your neighborhood.

Here are five DO’s (and a few DON’Ts) to consider before putting your home on the market that will help yield the highest return on your investment:

1. Apply a fresh coat of paint.

If the exterior of your home needs a little more than a good pressure washing, consider having a fresh coat of paint professionally applied. Keeping the paint similar in color to

Painting your home in neutral colors makes it easier for a buyer to be able to visualize themselves in the home.

2. Add curb appeal.

Curb appeal is more than just a pretty yard. It influences the feeling a buyer gets when looking at the exterior of your home. You want your home to feel welcoming and offer hints of what it might be like inside. One

budget friendly option to enhance your curb appeal is sprucing up and refreshing the landscaping. Add some inexpensive shrubs or flowers and a fresh layer of pine straw in the beds. Azaleas are a great option for our area and come in many different shades. Don’t overlook the basics, like trimming trees, keeping up with general lawn care maintenance and pressure washing the driveway and walkways. Updating your curb appeal increases a property’s value and typically can result in a 100% rate of return on your investment.

3. Replace carpet/repair flooring

Updating your flooring can instantly change the look and feel of your home. Beautiful floors make a great first impression. When investing in new flooring choose something that is not only desirable to you but will also be appealing to potential buyers. Luxury

4. Update kitchen/bathrooms

Although aesthetic appeal plays a role in your overall return, you also want your upgrades to be functional and useful to future buyers. Knowing your home value can also help influence your selections, as your budget may be driven to some degree by the value of not only your home but other properties in your neighborhood.

When it comes to kitchens and baths, there are different levels of remodeling. A minor kitchen remodel is said to yield the largest return. This would include upgrading items such as cabinet door fronts, installing new countertops, cabinet hardware and fresh paint. Don’t do a major kitchen remodel prior to listing your home! A major remodel would include moving walls to achieve better functionality, semi-custom cabinetry, ecofriendly appliances, and new durable flooring that compliments your home. You have seen them, and if you are anything like me, you LOVE the look of those beautiful, lush, landscapes with layers of plant material everywhere you look. Layered landscapes contain plant material in all stages of growth, different shades of green, a diverse group of textures with gorgeous pop of color placed throughout. You might not believe me when I tell you this, but you too can have this type of layered landscape on your property. Creating a magazine-worthy landscape can be achieved by stacking plant material in three layers.

So where do you start? Creating a layered landscape begins with designing what I call the “bones” of the landscape, also known as layer number one. The first layer, or bones, of a layered landscape act as a framework for the entire project. This foundation layer consists of tall plant material which will be used as a guide for planting the additional two layers. Tall plant material such as a tree form Ligustrum with its rich green leaves, a Bismark palm with steelblue fan shaped fronds, the majestic oak tree, or the rapid growing sky pencil holly can be placed anywhere in a planting bed. The plant material in layer number one can be placed in the middle, side, or back of a bed. You can opt for one large tree, such as a Magnolia or you can line up a hedge of Viburnum against a fence that is located at the edge of the bed. You might choose several different types of tall plant material such as a few Japanese Maple trees, one Elm tree, and one Eastern Redbud tree. The plant choices are many and planning is a must. The more you plan the bones, or the first layer, of the planting bed, the better the outcome—a layered landscape cannot sustain when built on a weak foundation!

Once you have the first layer planned, you will want to start choosing plant material for the second layer. The purpose of this layer is to fill in the areas around and up against the first layer. When considering plant material for the second layer, a good rule of thumb is to choose plants that will grow out more than up. Layer number one consists of tall plant material, so medium-height shrubs and/or perennials are a nice choice for the second layer of plant material. For example, your foundation layer consists of a line of Podocarpus against an established fence. In layer number 2, you can choose to fill the area around and in front of the Podocarpus with a few Hydrangeas, Japanese Hollies, a few Ligustrum shrubs, Azaleas, Pittosporum, Distylium or Camellias. You can choose to plant one type of plant in this layer or mix it up. If you choose to mix it up, remember to combine plant materials that are compatible with each other and to the area you are planting.

Ornamental grasses, like Miscanthus, Pink Muhly, or Purple Fountain grass

are great choices for a second layer of plant material and the textures these grasses bring to the total look are amazing.

Now that you have your first and second layers planned, it is time to plan the final third layer of your plant bed. In the first layer, or the foundation layer, you are using tall plants or plant material that grows vertically. In the second layer, you are using medium-height –or horizontal growing – plant material. The final layer in this planting bed will be more of a low growing plant material or a ground cover. This layer of plants will creep along the ground, filling in spaces under the first and second layers of the planting bed. Picture what happens when you spill a glass of water

on your countertop: the water runs out and around objects in its way. Ground cover grows in much the same fashion. For this third and final layer, you have a wide variety of ground covers from which to choose. Some popular choice in the Golden Isles include Asiatic Jasmine, Creeping Jenny, Mondo Grass, Interrupted fern, Liriope, Carex, and Hosta.

Continuing with our earlier example of a layered plant bed design consisting of a line of Podocarpus planted against a fence as the foundation of the bed, layer number one. In layer number 2, you add a mixture of Hydrangeas, Muhly grass and Ligustrum shrubs around and in front of the Podocarpus hedges. For the final third layer, you could add several Creeping Jenny in front of the second layer of plant material. Creeping Jenny is a great choice for ground cover, especially in our area because it creeps along damp, wet ground. This plant material has yellow-green heart-shaped leaves, and creates an attractive, dense mat of plant material. Ground cover

serves many purposes in a landscape. It can be used to control erosion, as a substitute for sod in areas where turf is difficult to grow, and as a border for planting beds. Denser ground covers also aid in controlling weeds.

The main principle in creating a layered landscape is to layer (or stack) plants using the plant height to create a lush, full, exciting landscape. Use other characteristics of your plants, such as texture, leaf color, flowering, nonflowering, blooming times, sun, and water needs, etc. when choosing which to grow together in a single layer. When selecting plant material always keep in mind how well those plants will blend with each other to create a sensational landscape with non-stop color from one season to the next. Using a plant characteristic in repetition throughout all three layers is great way to pull your landscape together.

Throughout the year, you can replace plant material that has reached its limits and/or

change out plant material that isn’t working well without losing the overall beauty of the landscape. Be bold! Loosen up on the idea that you must have everything symmetrical in your planting beds. One of the best features of this type of landscape is most of the time, you will never know if there is a mistake within your design. These landscapes are not meant to be perfect and the more imperfect they are, the more beautiful they become! Nature will do the work for you!

HYDRANGEAS ARE THE SHOWSTOPPERS FOR MANY A SOUTHERN GARDEN.

These beautiful flowering bushes will provide big, clusters of blossoms and verdant foliage all through the summer as long as they are given adequate shade, water, and fertilizer and protected from harsh afternoon sunlight. But even the star of your garden should have a supporting cast. You can enhance visual appeal, provide essential shade, and still keep your hydrangeas in the spotlight by adding companion plants.

If you haven’t planted your hydrangeas yet, you may want to consider placing them near existing trees of small to medium height so they can provide the essential shade for the flowering shrubs. Be careful when considering placement and digging the hole to plant shrubs near existing trees so you don’t nick or damage an existing root system. If your hydrangeas are already established, you may want to plant trees for shade such as dogwoods. Several varieties of dogwood grow to heights of 10-20 feet, just the right size to provide protective shade to neighboring hydrangeas. They also offer pretty blooms, attractive foliage and bark.

Taking the importance of shade into consideration, a wonderful companion plant for hydrangeas is the hosta. With a wide variety of shapes, sizes, and colors to choose from, hostas share hydrangea’s love of morning sun and afternoon shade, and will thrive under the canopy of hydrangea foliage. The lush foliage of the hosta will serve as green canvas and background for your hydrangeas’ bursting blooms.

Since hydrangeas don’t bloom year-round, you’ll should assortment of other plants that will blossom during the shrub’s dormant months to ensure long-lasting color. A combination and summer flowering annuals that happily soak up the sun, like zinnias and snapdragons, can add more bright and bold colors to catch the eye. You may want to complement your hydrangeas’ blooms by planting flowers with similar hues or choose to create a more varied and vibrant palette with bright contrasting colors.

Ornamental grasses can add an understated elegance to your garden without shifting the focus from the flowering shrubs. These easy to grow grasses generally require little maintenance and subtly enhance the beauty of the flowers without calling attention to themselves. Tall fountain grass is a perfect anchor for the corners of your garden. This sun-lover has showy purple plumes that will sway in the breeze and provide light shade for the hydrangeas. Blue fescue, which has similar sun tolerance to hydrangeas and grows in 4-11” tall bluish-gray tufts makes for perfect edging.

Diving the Great Barrier Reef has been my dream since I was sixteen and living on Guam, where my love of diving and the ocean began. Ultimately, it resulted in a career as a marine biologist and SCUBA diving instructor.

My wife, Carol, and I decided to embark on a cruise with Viking, specifically on their ship Viking Mars. We had traveled on both ocean and river vessels with this cruise line previously and loved the Viking experience. We settled on the Sydney, Australia to Auckland, New Zealand cruise during Georgia’s winter, which is summer for Australia and New Zealand.

Upon landing in Sydney, we flew to Cairns for our Great Barrier Reef dive the next day. I was disappointed. We were in ten feet of water and saw individual

coral heads separated by sand. It was certainly not the barrier reef experience I expected.

In Sydney we walked the Royal Sydney Botanical Gardens, toured the Sydney Opera House, visited Bondi Beach and the Sydney Ocean Reef Aquarium. The aquarium houses one of only two dugongs (think manatee) in captivity. This is an older aquarium, and

it showed its age. The Georgia Aquarium in Atlanta and South Carolina Aquarium in Charleston provide much more enjoyable experiences.

Every morning we were at sea I spent a couple of hours on the 7th deck with Stephen Marsh, the Viking Mars wildlife expert, looking for whales and dolphins. We saw several species of albatross and other sea birds, such as shearwaters and petrels, but few whales or dolphins. On one of our sea days, I left the viewing deck fifteen minutes before Stephen spotted a sperm whale. At least I got to see the photos! Another day we saw a whale blow, but sea conditions were such that we couldn’t identify the species.

In Melbourne, we visited the Healesville Sanctuary, which houses many species indigenous to Australia, including kangaroo and koala. My recommendation: do not visit a wildlife park in the middle of the day. The animals were much smarter than we were and spent that time sleeping. Carol’s dream of holding a koala was, unfortunately, not realized.

In Hobart, Tasmania, we visited the Barilla Bay Oyster farm where we enjoyed a sampling of Pacific oysters, which are also called Japanese oysters or Miyagi (Think “wax on/wax off.”) oysters. They were outstanding! The Barilla Bay Oyster farm has thousands of cages placed in the tidal bay adjacent to the facility. The oysters remain in cages until they are three years old, at which time they are harvested and sent to market. In addition to oyster farming, they purchase abalone from local divers and dry the abalone before shipping them

to Japan and China. One abalone brings $159 in those countries. That equates to more than $200 per pound!

Christchurch on New Zealand’s South Island was our next stop. Christchurch was the site of a magnitude 7 earthquake on September 4, 2010. Less than six months later, a second earthquake— magnitude 6.3 this time—struck, causing even greater devastation and the death of 180 people. Thousands of buildings not destroyed by the quake were condemned. Amazingly, 90 percent of the earthquake rubble has been recycled.

In the mountains north of Christchurch, we took a jet boat ride on the Waimakariri River. At full speed our driver would put the boat into a 360-degree spin. It was wonderful, although the wetted participants did not seem to enjoy it as much as I did. My

GoPro captured the action and soaked participants, including me and Carol.

Our next stop was to have been Wellington, capital of New Zealand. However, a day before we were to arrive in Wellington, we learned the port denied access, so we continued our cruise to Napier on the North Island. Access to a port is the purview of the Port Captain and I suspect larger ships that pay higher port fees were given priority. In Napier, home of the famous Hawke’s Bay wine growing region, we toured Clearview Estates and Abbey Cellars. We would have purchased wine to ship home but these wineries will only ship in country and to Australia. We did purchase a couple of bottles to pack in our checked luggage.

In Rotorua (Tauranga) we visited a Māori marae (meeting place) and learned about the earliest settlers of New Zealand. At the marae, a

Māori warrior challenged an appointed representative from our ship. Our group was required to sing a song to prove we came in peace and avoid beheading. We concluded our time in Rotorua with a visit to a Māori school and enjoyed performances of traditional dances, including a haka by the high school students. Our next stop was Auckland, where we enjoyed a walking tour of the city followed by an excellent seafood lunch at one of the riverfront restaurants. On the ship that evening, we enjoyed a performance by Māori singers/dancers including another haka.

Viking is rated number one in both ocean and river cruises and our travels with them have demonstrated that their reputation is well-earned. Their ocean ships (with the exception of the Expedition ships) carry 932 passengers, so it is a relatively small vessel compared to the megaships operated by other companies. We are looking forward to our next cruise with Viking, especially since we were given a voucher to make up for missing our scheduled stop in Wellington!

This was a trip of a lifetime, and we would go back in a heartbeat! It was expensive, however, but I am dedicated to fishing in New Zealand. Perhaps in another five years. Until next time, Kia Ora!

COMES THROUGH

In our January 2023 issue, we shared the story of community efforts spearheaded by Miriam Lancaster, Pat Featherstone, and Sandy Colhard, and joined by Michael Torras, to preserve the historic tabby structure at the foot of the Torras Causeway once known as “The Visitors Club.”

Designed by Francis Abreu, completed in 1931 and used as a welcome center until 2012, the attractive building was unfortunately allowed to slowly become darker and darker and overgrown. Torras says, “It was disappearing right in front of our eyes and, although everyone seems to have been disappointed with that outcome, no one knew what to do.”

But NOW look at it! With many members of the Golden Isles community coming together to accomplish a common goal, the Spanish Colonial structure is once again welcoming. Now clean and in good repair, well-lit, and beautifully landscaped, it is a pleasant sight for visitors passing through the Golden Isles and a source of pride for residents. It’s an amazing accomplishment! There has been somewhere around $150,000 in volunteer service and material donations invested in this project through March and nearly everyone approached was excited to be a part of the preserving a part of our local history.

In addition to the numerous businesses and organizations involved in assisting with the restoration, cleaning, lighting, and Christmas cheer that we referenced in January’s story, more folks joined the effort as the end of the project draws near. Beyond Expectations did some necessary cleaning. Collins Lock

& Safe provided and installed new antiqued deadbolts for all exterior doors. When interior repair work was needed, JC Strother Co. provided lumber and Sweet Leaf Customs made floor repairs. Lee & Cates Glass cut new windowpanes to replace the broken ones, and Pane in the Glass will be installing them. Once installed, Island Painting will be back to complete the exterior painting.

Sea Island went above and beyond their original commitment to provide plants for landscaping. They not only performed the installation of the plants and trees, which required a crane, frontend loader, and forklift; they reworked the irrigation system as well. Roberts Civil Engineering provided drainage plans. Work still to be completed at time of print includes the installation of a new walkway connecting the parking lot to the covered cloister area by Seaside Pavers and Tile. Joe Jones has offered to sealcoat the asphalt parking lot and, following that, the city will repaint the yellow parking stops.

The pièce de resistance will be the recreation of the weathervane. That job is in the hands of Sea Island Forge. Marine Co. removed the old rusted out piece that could not be salvaged. A design plan for the banner was created following research of what the old design might have been is currently being finalized. Sea Island Forge will sandblast, galvanize, and powder coat the completed weathervane. This is anticipated to be the “cherry on top” that finalizes the restoration efforts. A ribbon cutting ceremony will be held to celebrate the completion of the project, so keep an eye out for that.

The preservation of this little yet historically significant building holds an important lesson for us all. When we choose to reach a common goal and someone steps up to coordinate communication and tasks, many hands are willing to help. Projects that seem like they may be cost prohibitive or beset with too many obstacles to overcome may simply require joint effort, determination, and the willingness to ask for help. Working together like this, it’s remarkable how much we can accomplish! So…does anyone want to tackle the Jekyll Island Amphitheatre?

Foundation Club Instrumental in Success of the RSM Classic

e Davis Love Foundation often shares stories about the 1,200+ volunteers that it takes to make e RSM Classic possible. Spectators and players see these individuals performing the duties of ambassadors, marshals, laser operators, walking scorers and many other roles. However, there’s also another special group of leaders who assist the tournament team throughout the year. Known as the Foundation Club, these volunteers help raise additional funds for the tournament through recruiting and educating new potential corporate partners. ey also tour tournament charities, visit hospitality venues during tournament week to thank supporters, participate in tournament charity events, and serve as starters on the rst and tenth tees during the Wednesday Pro-Am event and for all 4 tournament rounds of e RSM Classic.

Coastal Georgia Honor Flight will be taking o on May 13 and, at the present time, there are still seats available for veterans and Guardians. is is an incredible opportunity to participate in an enriching experience in Washington D.C. for our honored Coastal Georgia veterans. Veterans

y free to visit the war and branch of service memorials and Arlington National Cemetery. Guardians pay $500 to accompany a veteran for the day. Priority is given to WWII veterans, followed by veterans of the Korean and Vietnam wars. If a veteran is terminally ill, they are given top priority regardless of service. GIRLS HIT THE TRAIL

Support Girls on the Run of the Golden Isles and the accomplishments of its young runners by participating in the annual GOTR 5K at Blythe Island Regional Park on Saturday, May 6, starting at 8:30 a.m. is is a trail run that is open to the public and spectators are also welcome to cheer the participants on. Because Girls on the Run focuses on self-improvement and achieving goals, the race is not chip-timed (there will be a clock at the nish). Program participants are already registered for the 5K and will receive their race materials the morning of the event. Bottling Sunlight

In 1927, Colonel Tillinghast L. Huston bought Butler Island, south of Darien, Georgia, at a sheriff’s sale and began construction of a residence there. A New Yorker, Huston was co-owner of the New York Yankees baseball team from 1915 to 1923. At Butler Island, Huston transformed the former rice plantation into a successful dairy farm stocked with purebred Guernsey cattle. Supplying both local and East Coast markets, the dairy produced milk, cottage cheese, and ice cream. At the same time, the farm produced and shipped crops of vegetables and fruits, such as iceberg lettuce, satsuma oranges, and lemons.

The high standards of the Butler Island Dairy were recognized in 1932 when it was approved as a supplier of vitamin D fortified milk. During the first decades

of the 20th century, the disease caused by vitamin D deficiency, known as rickets, became a major threat to the wellbeing of children throughout America. Although vitamin D can be produced naturally by exposure to sunlight, as the nation became more industrialized and urban, children spent less time outdoors. According to a Brunswick Pilot article on the topic, dated July 8, 1932, even in areas with abundant sunshine, “ten to twenty percent of all babies show traces of rickets.”

Researchers at the University of Wisconsin discovered that yeast irradiated with ultraviolet light had greater vitamin D potency. When cows were fed this yeast, the vitamin was incorporated into their milk without affecting the taste or appearance. The Pilot article noted that only highly

efficient dairies such as the one at Butler Island were awarded licenses to use the process. Subsequent advertisements for Butler Island Dairies referred to the milk as “Bottled Sunlight,” noting that each quart contained as much vitamin D as three teaspoons of cod liver oil.

Colonel Huston died at Butler Island in 1938. The dairy operations eventually ceased, but the farm continued to grow lettuce, beans, cauliflower,

cabbage, and other produce. The

cabbage, and other produce. The Huston estate sold Butler Island and the adjacent Champney Island to R. J. Reynolds, Jr. in 1949. Reynolds sold the property to the state of Georgia in 1954.
