PUBLISHER’S LETTER

When I Was Your Age I Had To …

I

probably heard that line from my dad a thousand times while I was growing up when I would complain about something. Did EVERYONE’S dad walk five miles to school in the snow? Last month at my 40th high school reunion (it was supposed to be in 2020, but, well, you know …) some classmates and I were retelling old stories and were amazed that we were somehow able to communicate back then without cellphones, email, Facebook, Twitter, TikTok, etc. Our only “social media” was the phone in the kitchen with the long cord. I got to thinking about how different the lives of the 18-year-old students of the Glynn Academy Class of 2022 are compared to our lives as the Class of 1980. Here are some things I’m not sure these kids would even understand. I Meeting up with a friend at the movies and having no way to communicate once you’ve left the house. I Taking photos and then waiting for them to be developed to see if they turned out okay. I Finding places while traveling without GPS navigation.

I Turning the dial on the TV to change the channel.

ELEGANT ISLAND LIVING

I Even worse, having to properly time getting a drink and snack before the commercial break on TV ended. I Or NEVER being able to see a show because you missed it when it aired on TV. I Checking the pay phone change return for any forgotten coins.

I Having to buy the entire album to get the one song you liked, or else wait for it to come on the radio and try to record it. I Being unable to read a letter or note because you can’t decipher someone else’s handwriting. I Looking through the Yellow Pages for a telephone number. I Hanging out at the Coast Guard Station or Gascoigne Bluff.

As the reunion began to wind down, I noticed classmates taking selfies on their iPhones, and trading cell numbers to keep in touch. I heard someone yell, “Party at the Coast Guard Station!” I wonder how many of my classmates had to GPS it! As you gather with your old friends or your families to enjoy turkey dinners and tailgates, oyster roasts and football, our EIL family wishes you all a safe and Happy Thanksgiving!

ELEGANT ISLAND LIVING

s always, we’re getting a jump on the holiday season in our November issue with our traditional Holiday Happenings guide. As much as we love Thanksgiving, we know that here in the Golden Isles, the holiday open houses and Christmas celebrations tend to start before we even finish our leftover turkey and dressing, and we don’t want you to miss a thing! In these pages you’ll find details about the charity galas and fundraisers, special holiday shopping events, light displays, opportunities to visit with Santa, Christmas concerts and performances, parades, and fireworks too!

Sponsors choose to decorate a 6’ tree or a wreath, providing their own theme and decorations, to be auctioned as a fundraiser for Hope 1312 Collective. Sponsors have been encouraged to have fun and be creative with their themes and to consider items that are not typical Christmas décor, such as a “Family Movie Night” tree with movie themed ornaments, popcorn, and movie tickets; “Candy Land” with candy ornaments, bright colors and edible candies and a board game under the tree, or an “UGA Wreath” decorated with game tickets and red and black Bulldawg 22

ea turtles need love too! Start your winter season by participating in the Cold-Stunned Plunge benefiting Jekyll Island Authority’s Georgia Sea Turtle Center on November 27 at 9:30 a.m. Presented by the Beach Village

Merchants and Georgia Power, this ‘cold-stunned’ plunge into the chilly Atlantic is a fun and slightly frigid fundraiser to help the sea turtles on the Georgia coast. Many sea turtles get caught in hypothermic water temperatures during the winter months, and your support will assist with cold-stun rehabilitation and recovery. Upon an airhorn start, participants will run and ‘plunge’ into the ocean and emerge back onto the sand to collect their commemorative t-shirt. Take the plunge and raise some funds! ELEGANT ISLAND LIVING

For the past several months, Elegant Island Living has partnered with the Davis Love Foundation (DLF) to spotlight local charities they support and other partner organizations. We have dedicated a page in each issue leading up to The RSM Classic tournament as a “Foundation Focus.” We began in April by highlighting the tournament’s Charity Putting Challenge. In May, the subject was the partnership with the Southeast Georgia Health System and its Foundation. In June, the focus was food insecurity and the Firebox Initiative. The role of Rich’s as a founding local partner who continues to support the tournament was July’s subject. Non-profit organization Communities in Schools was the focus in August. For the September issue, we highlighted the Friends of the Foundation car raffle. Last month, we turned to the Boys & Girls Club of Southeast Georgia. In this issue, we’ll wrap things up with a closer look at Safe Harbor Children’s Center, a non-profit organization that is celebrating 30 years of service to our community’s most vulnerable members. For the children and youth who come to Safe Harbor, the first pages of their story have been difficult and discouraging. Time and again, they have been discarded and discounted. They’ve been told they aren’t worthy. They are deeply damaged and bruised – the sad result of years of abuse, violence, and trauma. Too many have been rejected (or worse) by those who should love them unconditionally, leaving behind physical and emotional scars that can linger for a lifetime. But if you ever meet them, you know that’s only part of their story. Their goodness, bravery, and resilience are truly inspiring. The first pages of their stories don’t have to be predictive of how it will continue. Safe Harbor

represents the start of new pages in their life to bring hope and healing that will alter the trajectory of their lives and profoundly change the content of their stories. Children, families, and individuals who come to Safe Harbor have been abused, abandoned, or neglected, are homeless or have run away from home, or who are otherwise at risk or feel threatened. The Center’s mission is to provide services that promote security

and stability for at risk families, children, and individuals. The mission is powered by seven unique programs: Safe Harbor Children’s Shelter, Zach’s Place: Runaway & Homeless Youth Emergency Shelter, STRIVE Transitional Living Program, Street Beat, Safe Harbor Children’s Advocacy Center, the Connie Smith Rape Crisis Center, and Family Preservation. This past year, these programs collectively provided more than 2,898 individuals with vital services. It was the largest one-year growth since Safe Harbor was founded in 1991. And they continue to strive for excellence and to produce outcomes that are impactful for our community. The services of Safe Harbor would not be possible without the support of the Golden Isles community. Among those supporters are the Loves. “When Safe Harbor first opened its doors in 1991, Davis and Robin Love were one of the first families

in our community to ask, “How can we help?” said Leslie Hartman, Safe Harbor’s Executive Director. “Since that time, we have regarded Davis and Robin among our greatest blessings. Through their vision and thoughtful leadership in giving, the Love family has been integral to our continued growth and development as a vital nonprofit organization. Without a doubt, their long-term support has helped change the lives of so many children and youth in our community. Some people dream dreams. David and Robin help make dreams become reality.” Funding from The RSM Classic and the Davis Love Foundation provides the opportunity to do more for those currently served and for those who will seek assistance. “This generous support allows us to implement new innovative services,” said Hartman. “It also allows us to increase staffing in key areas to ensure we meet the growing demand for our services while upholding the level of excellence expected by our clients and community.” We hope that these articles have demonstrated the incredible impact that The RSM Classic, hosted by Davis Love III, the Davis Love Foundation, and their partners have had on our local community through the more than $22.2 million raised since the tournament’s inception 11 years ago, and the ongoing “Drive to $25 Million.” The 2021 PGA TOUR event is November 15-21 at Sea Island Golf Club and it’s not too late for you to contribute. For partnership information and to be a part of the “Drive for $25M,” regardless of the size of your business, contact John McKenzie, Director of Sales, at jmckenzie@dlovefoundation.com or visit rsmclassic.com. ELEGANT ISLAND LIVING

One of the best things about the colder months in the South is the oyster roast.

T

here’s nothing like an evening with friends around a fire, sharing camaraderie, cold beer, and crackers topped with that tasty roasted ocean treat and a little hot sauce! On Saturday, December 18, the community is invited join the American Cancer Society Victory Board to “Shuck Cancer!” at their 52nd Annual Charity Gala. Since the very first charity event more than a half century ago, “Harriet’s fashion show” has evolved from that initial luncheon/fashion show at Frederica Yacht Club to a full-blown charity gala. Over the years, the themes for the

event have ranged from sparkling soirees to beach carnivals to Southern suppers. All with the goal and hard work of many volunteers to raise funds for the American Cancer Society. This year’s the gala goes casual under the stars at Sea Island’s Rainbow Island. This memorable December evening will begin at 4:00 p.m. with soul warming cocktails and succulent oysters with delicious accompanying fare. After everyone has shucked their fill, the live auction

will begin. Numerous auction items generously donated by not only our community, but surrounding communities as well, will be showcased. Since funds raised will benefit the American Cancer Society, you’re encouraged to bid often and on as many items as you can! To close out the night, Mason Waters & the Groove Allstars will provide musical entertainment, so put on your boogie shoes and get ready to dance the night away! And don’t worry about keeping the babysitter out too late, because things will

wrap up at 8:00 p.m. But if you want to take the party elsewhere and make a full night of it, we won’t tell! To bring home the importance of supporting the American Cancer Society’s fight to end cancer, the Victory Board highlights a member of our community and requests that they share their own personal experience with cancer. “This year, we’re so honored that Lauren Belt will be joining us to share her story and how the local community has supported her and her family along their journey” says Co-Chair Jeanie Beth Baxter. She continues, “Lauren’s positive outlook during her battle has inspired me from the start, and I am so excited that she will get to share her story with all of you during our event. Gala brings us together for a cause that hits home for so many. By supporting the American Cancer Society, we are dedicated to helping find a cure.” Lauren is a lifetime member of our community and has inspired so many with her unwavering courage. Here’s a little snippet Lauren shared about her journey: “On April 9th, 2020, when the country began shutting down with COVID,

my world shattered. At age 27, I was diagnosed with Invasive Ductal Carcinoma, a form of Breast Cancer. In 2020, 2.3 million women were diagnosed with breast cancer. Although breast cancer in young adults is rare, more than 250,000 people living in the U.S. were diagnosed under the age of 40. In young adults, breast cancer tends to be diagnosed in later stages and tends to be more aggressive. Nearly 80% of young adults with breast cancer find their abnormality themselves. This was the case with my diagnosis. I was diagnosed, treated early and my projected prognosis is great. Early detection, as in most cancer diagnosis, is the key. Thankfully, I am one of the lucky ones.”

Lauren and John Belt

For Victory Board Co-Chairs Lexie Whatley, Claire Bryan, Jeanie Beth Baxter, Laura Peebles, and Emily Alonso, Shuck Cancer is all about creating a memorable experience centered around friends and family, that raises money toward cancer research, local patient support and prevention. “Everyone has been impacted by cancer whether through family and friends or a personal battle, so planning Shuck Cancer is our opportunity to give back to our community,” says Claire Bryan. Emily Alonso

adds, “We hope that you will take a break during the busy holiday season and join us for a night under the stars as we raise funds to Shuck Cancer!” Tickets are on sale now for $125/each and can be purchased at ACSVictoryBoard.org. Sponsorship opportunities are also available ranging from $750-$10,000. If you’re interested in becoming a sponsor, email shuckcancer2021@gmail.com. Sharpen your knives, ready your gloves, and get ready to shuck!

Home for the Holidays

R

Luke takes time to study the market each and every day so that he can answer any sort of questions for his clients, friends, and the general public. “You don’t have to be working with (me) in a transaction….my job as a Realtor is to be able to provide information at any time.”

Missy Neu Top producer, agent trainer, and active community volunteer, Missy Neu has always said that she is “blessed to call the Golden Isles home.” She welcomes the opportunity to introduce newcomers to the area and show them what it is like to live here. A NATIONAL TREASURE

S

in Our Backyard

ince it was established in 1936, Fort Frederica National Monument has been an example of excellence in historic preservation and innovative education. In its early days, Frederica was the site of some of the most comprehensive historical archeological excavations ever carried out. In the 1990s, the fort created and played host to an education program that revolutionized the way colonial history and S.T.E.M. principals were taught in elementary schools. The new Junior Ranger book developed at the fort in the 2000s is considered the gold standard throughout the National Park Service. Frederica’s Volunteer Program was recognized as the most outstanding in the Southeast Region in 2018 and 2019. In 2020, Fort Frederica added more feathers to its cap, so to speak, with its staff and volunteers earning recognition for

their dedication, innovation, and exemplary contributions to the National Park Service and the community. Michael Seibert received three prestigious awards for work he did to resolve a longstanding question about the location of burials of enslaved and freed populations of AfricanAmericans on St. Simons Island. Working closely with stakeholders, Seibert developed a research methodology to locate burials with minimal ground disturbance, established a committee who participated in the decisionmaking process, and hosted a re-dedication ceremony involving four different religious sects. The project culminated in a day-long festival celebrating Gullah Geechee cultural heritage. Seibert also supervised and mentored students and volunteers who played integral roles in researching biographies of the interred

individuals, developing outreach events and materials, and contacting stakeholder groups. The fort’s new museum exhibit highlighting the insights gained from this project was created under his design. Seibert was recognized by the National Park Service with the 2020 John L. Cotter Award for Excellence in Archeology National Award, which is presented to individuals and teams who demonstrate innovation in archeological practice, resource stewardship, and public outreach, among other criteria. This award celebrates the kind of work the National Park Service wishes to see system-wide. He also received the 2020 Freeman Tilden Award for Interpretation Southeast Region, the highest Interpretation and Education awards presented to a National Park Service individual or team to recognize

outstanding contributions to the profession of interpretation and education. This award was created to inspire and reward creative thinking and original programs/projects in our National Parks that result in positive and meaningful impacts for the visitors and for the preservation of the parks. The NPS Directors also awarded Seibert the 2020 Appleman-Judd-Lewis Excellence in Cultural Resource Management, which recognizes expertise and outstanding contributions to cultural resource stewardship and management employees of the National Park Service. This award was designed to encourage creativity in cultural resource stewardship and management practices and projects, particularly those that may serve as examples or models for programs service-wide. Fort Frederica’s volunteers received 2020 recognition as well, with George and Helen Hartzog Volunteerism Awards granted to Tom and Karen Hartley and the Glynn Academy Ethnology Club. It was former National Park Service Director George B. Hartzog, Jr. who created the Volunteers-In-Parks (VIP) program in 1970. After his retirement, George and his wife Helen remembered the VIP program with a generous donation to the National Park Foundation. This fund has been used to support awards that honor the efforts of exceptional volunteers, groups, and park VIP programs. Tom and Karen Hartley received the Hartzog Individual Volunteer National Award for the dedication they exhibited when, at the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, they safely remained at the park past their original commitment to help staff begin new protocols, train new employees, and provide visitors with the opportunity to continue experiencing their national parks. The Hartleys also built an 18th-century bake oven for visitor programming and trained staff in its use, created and marked 1.5 miles of nature trails for visitors to safely social

distance and enjoy access to a previously unused part of the park. They assisted park staff with the development and hosting of an African American festival day that focused on the life of Robert S. Abbott and the discovery of an unmarked cemetery containing Abbott’s father and two aunts, and developed a self-guided nature walk with signage and brochures along existing trails. The Hartzog Youth Group Volunteer Award Southeast Region was granted to a group of students from Glynn Academy who created a volunteer organization to carry out a series of excavations and educational programs throughout 2020 and 2021. The excavations have yielded new information on the development of the town during the colonial period and its continued use/habitation through the 1940s. Their findings have led to new interpretative programming, including museum exhibits, and provided a unique perspective and experience to park visitors. The efforts of the students increased community awareness of the park, providing opportunities for remote learning, and modified educational programming to schools. The students act as ambassadors for Fort Frederica, recruiting new volunteers and assisting with visitor messaging. Their work and positive attitudes had led to the donation of over $50,000 to the Friends of Fort Frederica for the development of archeological education programming and internship opportunities. In 2021, the Friends of Fort Frederica were able to offer the first archeological educational internships to four students from Glynn Academy. We are so proud to have Fort Frederica National Monument and its incredible staff and volunteers continuing to further our education about and beyond colonial history here in our island home. For more information about Fort Frederica and its programs, visit nps.gov/fofr and follow the park on Facebook.

The Name Game W

ith the busiest time of year fast approaching, here are some tips to remember names (or save yourself when you forget) at office gatherings, community celebrations, and family dinners with new faces.

Listen. Be sure to listen carefully when introductions are made and make eye contact with your new acquaintance. Repeat the Name Immediately. Say the name and try to make a connection based on the introduction. For

example, “John, it is nice to meet you. I was in Dallas last month for my daughter’s college orientation.”

Tell them Goodbye. Speaking to someone as you leave and calling them by name is a great way to remember their name the next time you see them. You are making a picture in your head whether you realize it or not.

Use the Conversational Clue. My mentor, Dorthea Johnson, spoke of this trick often. Especially in business gatherings, adding a conversational “clue” plants a seed and will help in remembering names. For example, “Sara

Whitten, I’d like to introduce to you Robert Maxwell from the Marketing Department. Robert, Sara is the Director of Human Resources. Like you, she grew up in Boston.”

Re-Introduce Yourself. If there are people you should know but whose names you have forgotten, introduce yourself (very humbly) to them just as you walk in. Say something like, “It’s so great to see you! I’m Jennifer Daniel with North University.” They should respond by introducing themselves to you. You should never expect someone to remember your name. Reintroducing yourself is something you should be very comfortable doing.

Jennifer Daniel is a graduate of The Protocol School of Washington and she may be reached at Jennifer@polishedpeyton.com or visit her website at polishedpeyton.com.

FISHING UNDER A CATFISH MOON The Brunswick Actors Theatre presents Catfish Moon by Laddy Sartin November 13-14, 20-21, 27-28. This play offers something for everyone: romance, friendship, and fishing! The old fishing pier out on the end of Cypress Lake has just fallen under the magic of another Catfish Moon. It was the favorite hangout for three best friends when they were kids – skipping school, skinny dipping and even experiencing the mysteries of kissing girls. On the pier, the weight of adulthood is lifted by laughter and their love of fishing. Showtimes Saturday nights at 8:00 p.m. and Sunday matinees at 3:00 p.m. Doors open 30 minutes prior to curtain. For tickets and more information, call 912.230.1042 or visit soglogallery.com.

Your home is more than a building or an address. It’s where you experience life, connection, and growth. That is why our agents find what they do so rewarding! Each month we are going to take you into the home of one of our agents. See what they love and value most about their homes and where they live. My husband David and I live in the St. Simons community of Harrington. It is convenient for my lifestyle because I am always in and out of my home and most everything I need is nearby. I love that I can walk or ride my bike to Harrington Park, Musgrove Plantation, and Village Creek. We love spending time outdoors and having quick access to some of the best nature spots on the island was a huge selling point for us. From early morning nature walks to kayaking through the salt marsh rivers, there is always something to do and see outside! When we are at home, we are either relaxing out on our covered back deck or sitting around our dining room table playing cards. Our back deck has a tin roof and when it rains it is especially soothing to sit outside and listen to the rainfall. When it comes to cards, we are all pretty competitive. We also found it is a great way to get our kids to spend more time with us. I also enjoy cooking for friends and family. Some of my favorite Peruvian recipes were passed down by my Grandmother. When we have time to get away, we enjoy trips to North Carolina where we have a lake house on Lake Chatuge, or back to my hometown in Athens, Georgia. To me, a house is not simply a structure. The elements one adds makes it a home. Personal touches such as photos and kids’ drawings give the feel of a home. A combination of favorite pieces of furniture along with familiar little touches is what makes a house a home. There is a connection one makes when one steps into a future home. This moment and the experience that leads to it is why I enjoy what I do. Whether finding a home or selling a home, there are many details I help facilitate on behalf of my clients to ensure that they are making the best choice for their families. Maria Jennings is a Top Producer in the Golden Isles with over 20 years of real estate experience as an Associate Broker. Remembering the Goat Man

M

any who lived in the South in the 1950s and 60s remember encountering Charles “Ches” McCartney, more commonly known as the “Goat Man.” McCartney became a folk legend as he travelled around the country with a small herd of goats and all his belongings heaped on a rickety wagon.

McCartney was born in Iowa in 1901 and worked as a farmer until the 1930s. After losing his farm during the Great Depression, he began working for the Works Progress Administration. In 1935, he was injured on the job when a falling tree pinned him down for many hours. After his near-death experience, he took to the road and became an itinerant preacher, travelling from town to town with 15-30 goats pulling his wagon or trailing along beside it.

Crowds gathered on the outskirts of southern towns to hear him preach and share his philosophy of life. He was known to wear goatskin clothes and subsist on goat’s milk which, along with his habit of rarely bathing, earned him the nickname Goat Man. Such was his fame for religious fervor that he caught the attention of writer Flannery O’Connor, who lived in Milledgeville. He is mentioned in her letters and may have inspired a character in one of her novels. To earn a living on the road, McCartney sold pots, pans, and picture postcards of his caravan. He was married three times and had several children. One of his wives was a Spanish knife thrower ten years his senior. McCartney claimed to have travelled through every state except Hawaii. After being attacked and injured near Chattanooga in

the late 1960s, he settled in Jeffersonville, Georgia, which had been headquarters of his Free Thinking Christian Mission for many years. He eventually sold or gave away his goats but continued to travel by foot and hitchhike. He died in a nursing home in Macon in November 1998. Though in his late nineties, he claimed to be well over 100. Earlier this year, Chuck Horton, a former resident of Brunswick, donated the postcard shown here to the Society. He has vivid childhood memories of the Goat Man’s visits to Glynn County.
