ELEVEN MART ÍN PESCADOR

PRE-ARRIVAL PLANNING GUIDE

WELCOME

We are thrilled that you have chosen Eleven® and Martín Pescador for your upcoming trip. We will be here every step of the way to help with everything from fly fishing tackle recommendations to travel logistics, and anything in between. At our riverside lodges, our staff and guides are looking forward to meeting you and introducing you to their favorite rivers, lakes and streams.

The fishing is phenomenal, and so extensive that a week is hardly enough to explore all of the places we access. While you’re here, we’ll make sure you see the best of it, tailored exactly to your preferences and the current conditions. We plan our days to maximize your time on the water, and after a full day of catching brown and rainbow trout, we bet you’ll be ready for a hot tub soak and a relaxing après treat on the deck followed by a chef-prepared gourmet dinner. This region of Chile has a world-famous reputation for seafood, and since the fjords and sea are so close, our dishes deliver the best of these renowned flavors. Of course, some would argue that the steaks and carne asado are the best in the world here, as well. We would agree!

Between our water, which boasts both quality and quantity, and the lodge staff, whose warm personalities and top-notch delivery of food, wine and lodge amenities are unmatched, we promise you’ll be coming back year after year.

A DAY IN THE LIFE A MULTI-LODGE ADVENTURE

Martín Pescador Lodge is actually composed of two unique lodges that are strategically located in two distinct world-class watersheds. Anglers will fish from both lodges: Rio Yelcho Lodge, located in the Rio and Lago Yelcho basin, and Rio Rosselot Lodge, on the banks of Rio Rosselot. By combining these two destinations, our anglers see more of the region and have more variety of fishing techniques.

Our local and North American guides have fished and guided these waters for years. They consider the weather, fish migration, water levels, hatches, and much more to make each day the best possible. Every location has its own watercraft needs, so we have jet boats, hybrid power drifters, lake boats, fly fishing rafts and fly fishing cata-rafts customized for each individual body of water. In several spots, throwing dry flies works great all day. There are also places for dry dragonfly fly fishing. Plus, there are areas that challenge your light tippet skills and require you to match the hatch while sight fishing sipping rainbows. Streamers work well everywhere and can be just the ticket for very large rainbows and browns. Of course, all of this comes with chef-prepared lunches, some of the most beautiful scenery in the world, and very short drive times. In fact, quite a few of our trips start or finish right at the lodge.

ELEVEN ANGLING PATAGONIA

THE FISHING SURROUNDED BY AMAZING RIVERS AND LAKES

From Martín Pescador’s Rio Yelcho Lodge, anglers usually fish both ends of Lago Yelcho. Near the lodge at the outlet, we combine both lake and river fishing. The lake fishing includes dry dragonfly, dragonfly nymph, and streamer fishing—plus, a technique called ‘eeling’. The eels are actually a skinny semi-transparent minnow that measure 1 ½ inches to 3 inches long. Trout surround a school of minnows or herd them against a shore, then attack! Minnows flying and large swirls indicate a blitz. Then, as quickly as we can, we make a cast right into the frenzy.

In the river below the outlet, literally right in front of the lodge, the guides start to search for trout in eddies, suspended and rising to a variety of aquatic and terrestrial insects. Here, a small dry, often a size 18, will be much more productive than a big chubby or parachute madam X. This is sight fishing at its best. Rio Yelcho has miles of great streamer water, and on any given day, a blue wing olive hatch can begin and bring all the trout to the surface. At the other end of Lago Yelcho, we fish the lower Futaleufú River where it enters the lake. This is big fish country, including browns and rainbows. Famous for the dry dragonfly fishing midsummer, this area also sees migrating baby salmon and ‘eels’ that help put pounds on the local trout. All the while, you’re surrounded by some of the best scenery in Chile.

At Martín Pescador’s Rio Rosselot Lodge, anglers will experience wilderness-framed rivers, bordered by never-ending forests and interspersed with rapids, boulder gardens and emerald-green pools. These waters are rich with river-born insects, like mayflies, caddis flies and stoneflies. Many anglers fish with dry flies all day, every day, and streamer fishing is also always excellent, as is a dry dropper rig. These wild rainbows and browns average 16 to 19 inches, with larger fish caught quite often. This is the perfect “quality and quantity” scenario. Large, whitewater cata-rafts negotiate the rapids easily and provide a roomy platform to cast. We have several wilderness rivers to pick from and the drive times are from zero (starting at the lodge) to a half hour, making our Rio Rosselot Lodge location absolutely incredible. Needless to say, time in the truck is always far outweighed by time on the water.

SUGGESTED GEAR LIST & RECOMMENDED FLIES

We understand that many anglers prefer to fish with their own gear. Here are some suggestions and recommendations on what to bring.

RECOMMENDED EQUIPMENT AND TACKLE

RODS

We recommend medium fast to fast action rods. Patagonia is known for being windy so it’s good to be prepared with a rod that can deliver all sizes of flies on target. If you only bring one all-around trout rod we suggest a 9’ 6-weight 4-piece travel rod. A 5-weight is a good choice for dry fly fishing, and a 7-weight for larger streamers.

REELS

Large arbor reels are best for quick retrieve and less line memory. We recommend 75 to 100 yards of 20lb backing.

LINES

Fly lines can get complicated if you let them, so keep it simple. WF floating line for dries and most nymphs, and a fast sinking 24’ sinking tip streamer line are recommended. We have a good selection of specialty lines in all appropriate weights.

LEADERS/TIPPET

Your guides will have all the leaders and tippets you need. Stiff butt sections are important to turn over large dries and streamers. Use 3X – 5X for dries and nymphs and 0X – 3X for streamers.

OUR FAVORITE FLIES

These are some standard patterns to have handy if you feel like bringing some flies of your own.

DRIES

A variety of Chernobyl style patterns and Fat Alberts #6-12. Parachute Madam X (yellow, royal) #814. Muddler Trude/Tarantula (red, yellow, natural) #8-12. Dave’s and Parachute Hoppers #6-10. Royal Wulff, Royal Humpy, Yellow Humpy #10-16. Parachute Adams #12 – 16. Adult Damsel #10-12. Gibson’s Dragonfly #6-10.

NYMPHS

FOOD & DRINK

FOOD

The Martín Pescador lodges aren’t just an angling destination—the cuisine is equally as incredible. Chile’s rich soil and long coast make for an exceptionally delicious spread of local ingredients. The range of ecosystems delivers nearly every treat from the sea you can imagine, while grass-fed beef from Chile and Argentina gives you a taste of some of the world’s finest cuts of meat. The wine, of course, is also a standout. From the rich notes of dark Cabernets to the crisp flavors of Sauvignon Blancs, Chile’s regional wine is truly exquisite. Perhaps a favorite at the Rio Yelcho and Rio Rosselot Lodges is the Asado, a Chilean-style barbeque marked by smoked meats, a light-strung ambiance, and music and dancing. This tradition includes an open fire, plenty of local beverages, and an unforgettable night amongst friends new and old.

Three meals a day are included in your stay at Martín Pescador. You will enjoy thoughtfully prepared, seasonally relevant dishes that are plated and served family-style. We are happy to cater to dietary preferences and restrictions.

DRINK

A Chilean Tradition: The Pisco Sour

You haven’t tasted Chile until you’ve tried a Pisco Sour. This zesty, refreshing sipper is mixed with Pisco (a grape brandy), fresh-squeezed lemon, sugar, an egg white, and a dash of bitters. Wonderfully tasty and delightfully simple, the Pisco Sour is as integral to Chilean culture as anything—it even has its own national holiday.

ABOUT CHILE

CHILEAN CULTURE

Traveling in Chile delivers a unique offering of unspoiled natural beauty and a sense of cultural charisma. The landscape is a blend of stunning contrasts; snow-white salt plains, ancient glaciers, the driest desert on Earth, active volcanoes, and a myriad of lush forests, emerald lakes, and pristine rivers that serpentine through the Andes Mountains as they journey towards the Pacific Ocean.

Chile’s population is made up of a distinct blend of primarily European and indigineous peoples. The indigineous influence, especially that of the largest group the Mapuche, is integral to the fabric of Chile, while European influence has also shaped much of Chilean culture. On the economic front, Chile has achieved more economic prosperity than most countries in Latin America, in part due to their incredibly rich land and ocean resources, and in part due to systematic economic advances following an era of dictatorships.

The majority of Chileans are Roman Catholics, around 60%, with about 15% Christian Protestant, making it one of the nations in Latin America with the greatest Protestant influence. Around 25% of Chileans are religiously non-affiliated or state that religion is not important in their lives -- again one of the highest percentages in Latin America.

Spanish is the official language, and Chileans champion a thoroughly unique iteration woven with one-ofa-kind colloquialisms and faster-than-light pronunciation. Their rich traditions rooted in language, land, cuisine, and customs are punctuated by the quintessential warmth of hospitality, family, and passion for their country’s past, present, and future.

WEATHER AND HOW TO PACK

GEOGRAPHY AND CLIMATE WEATHER CONDITIONS BY MONTH

Summer is one of the most enjoyable times to visit Patagonia. While the weather, at times, can be quite unpredictable, with a wide range of extremes in temperature, sunlight, and rainfall, the summer generally offers mild, comfortable days and cool nights. Patagonia is considered a temerpate rainforest and can get large amounts of rain during the summer months, so packing footware that can get wet and muddy is key. The sun in the Southern Hempishere is far stronger than in the Northern Hempishere, and it is strongly recommended that adequate protection, like SPF 50, sun hoodies, and other protoctecive attire be added to your kit.

DECEMBER

As Patagonia enters the start of their beautiful summer season, temperatures begin to rise during the day while early mornings and evenings stay crisp and cool. Temperatures can range from the mid 40’s to mid 60’s.

JANUARY - MARCH

Overall the most popular time in terms of weather, these months typically deliver the sunniest, warmest days. Daylight is at its longest, with early sunrises and later sunsets. Temperatures start to warm up with ranges of mid 50’s to mid 70’s, with the possibility of reaching the mid 80’s on warmer days.

APRIL

April brings along the start of the seasonal change. The days are shorter and wetter as the autumn rain moves in and the temperatures drop to the 30’s. The vegetation turns rust red before the first snowflakes fall, and nights see the first freezing temperatures of the season. Autumn in Chile can be sunny and peaceful, but it can also offer howling winds that help relieve the trees of their last leaves.

RECOMMENDED TRAVEL INSIGHTS

From the moment your booking is confirmed, your Eleven Team is available to make your travel arrangements smooth and easy! We strongly suggest planning your air travel as soon as possible to secure best fares and ensure availability. Your Experience Team will reach out 90 days prior to your stay to kick off this process.

INTERNATIONAL AIR TRAVEL

For international flights into Chile, guests must book their own travel to Santiago. LATAM Airlines is an airline based in Santiago, Chile, and has direct flights to Santiago from the U.S. and many European cities. American, Delta, and United also offer direct and connecting flights to Santiago from many locations within the U.S. including New York, Miami, Los Angeles, Dallas, Atlanta, and Houston.

Things to consider before booking your international travel:

• Most flights are overnight so be sure to depart at least one day before check-in.

• We highly recommend that all group members coordinate similar arrival times in Santiago.

TRAVEL IN CHILE

Guests are required to book their own travel to Puerto Montt (PMC) if flying commercial, or, if flying private, to Chaitén. All travel to the lodge, after landing in either Puerto Montt or Chaitén, will be arranged by your Experience Team. Please note: Guests flying commercial into Puerto Montt are encouraged to spend the night in Puerto Varas (about 30 minutes away) the night before check-in.

NEED TO KNOW

CURRENCY EXCHANGE

The Chilean peso (CLP) is the official currency of Chile. The exchange rate does fluctuate, so please check the exchange rate before your depart for your trip. Don’t change USD or euro before arriving in Chile. You can exchange at the airport, at most hotels, at banks (ATMs available in Santiago and other cities), and exchange houses. Exchanges houses (Casa de Cambio) usually give the best rates.

CASH AND CREDIT CARDS

You will need Chilean pesos (cash) to pay for taxis and incidentals around Santiago and other cities and towns as foreign currency is not accepted in many of these places. It’s always good to have 50 to 100 USD in Chilean pesos. Credit cards are widely accepted in hotels, shops and restaurants. Depending on your credit card, this is the way to get the best exchange rate. It is best to use MasterCard or Visa. AMEX is less widely accepted.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

U.S. and British citizens entering Chile must have a valid passport. There is no reciprocity fee. U.S. and British citizens traveling to Chile for recreation, tourism, business, or academic conferences do not need to obtain a visa prior to their arrival in Chile. Citizens from other countries, please inquire. Upon arrival in Chile, customs will give you a small piece of paper that says PDI. Make sure to save that document for the duration of your stay, as you will be asked to hand it back to customs upon departure. We recommend that all travelers make copies of their passports and keep them separately.

LOCAL LANGUAGE

Spanish is the official language of Chile. English is widely spoken in resort areas and in Santiago at international chain hotels, but in Puerto Varas most taxi drivers only speak Spanish. At the lodge, all hospitality staff and guides speak English. We encourage all guests to download Google Translate before traveling.

22

LOCAL TIMEZONE

Santiago, Chile is on Chile Standard Time which is U.S. Eastern Time +1 hour. Chile does change to and from daylight savings time with the U.S.

COMMUNICATION SERVICES

If you have cell service in the U.S. with Verizon or AT&T you can sign up for a plan specifically for Chile for about 40 USD per month. This should cover your trip for cell and internet/email service wherever there is coverage. Santiago and most cities and towns have good coverage. At the lodge, there is cell service and internet available, but weather conditions can interfere with both at times. When the internet is working there is Wi-Fi in the lodge. The lodge has a telephone for use in emergencies.

ELECTRICAL CURRENT

Throughout Chile the power sockets are of type C and L. The standard voltage is 220 V and the standard frequency is 50 Hz. U.S. guests will require a voltage converter for 110 volt devices. Electrical sockets have two or three holes and accept round (European) plugs. You will need an adapter for your U.S. plugs. We have adapters at the lodge, but not converters. Please bring them for devices not already equipped. Most laptop computers and cell phones have chargers with converters, so for those you only need the adapter.

GRATUITIES AND TIPPING

Please be assured that gratuities are not expected by our team, however, if you feel you would like to reward the Eleven staff or guides, here is some helpful information and standard courtesies.

At the end of your stay, the Lodge Manager will walk you through your final invoice and the gratuity guidance sheet. If you choose to leave one amount for the entire team, it will get distributed amongst all guides and staff who contributed to your stay. For the entire hospitality and guide team, we suggest $1,000 USD per guest per week. If you prefer to leave this on your credit card your Experience Manager can assist you. Tipping is at your discretion and this is merely a recommendation.

SPECIAL REQUESTS

Please be sure to fill out the pre-trip questionnaire, which you have received separately via email, and other correspondence. Most importantly we need to know if you have any food allergies, physical limitations, or medical needs that the lodge manager and staff should know about ahead of your arrival. Please share any special requests such as: favorite food, wine, or alcohol; if you are celebrating a birthday or anniversary; any requests related to the type of fishing you prefer, or anything else that could make your trip more enjoyable. We do everything possible to meet all special requests.

DEPOSIT AND CANCELLATION POLICY

Please refer to our website for updated information regarding our deposit and cancellation policy: https://elevenexperience.com/cancellation-policies

TRIP INSURANCE

The purchase of trip cancellation insurance is required. The Eleven Team can help you arrange trip cancellation insurance prior to your trip. Please ask your sales representative for more information.
