design and installation, and is an acknowledged expert not just in Western Australia but world-wide. Roberto’s hands-on porcelain training course covered cutting and detailing to produce invisible mitre joints, detailed step-by-step fabrication of the perfect base structure for basins, worktops, shower trays, sinks, and other items. And, for the purpose of this article, it also looked at the selection of the ideal type of adhesives and grouts for this kind of complex, hand-made, fabrication. Failure-free performance and high-end aesthetics must go hand in hand form these type of projects. The session, attended by fabricators mainly from the natural stone sector, along with material suppliers such as Porcelanosa, Neolith, and Dry Treat, really drilled down on this topic. Roberto has extensive experience of using XXL format slabs from Florim, Atlas Concorde, Mirage, and many of the other leading European porcelain slab manufacturers. He uses adhesives and grouts from major brands like Kerakoll and Mapei, but made no secret that, for
him, CerCol provides the optimum range of construction chemicals for bespoke kitchen and bathroom installations, whether manufactured from porcelain or conglomerate alternatives such as Quartzform or Cosentino. CerCol has created a dedicated product range for this market. It is designed to allow fabricators to maximise the benefits of porcelain slabs such as UV- and chemicalresistance, colour fastness, heatresistance, and tensile strength. The seamless installation also allows the major advantage of porcelain stoneware – its ability to imitate, through use of modern decorating technology, the characteristic surface textures of materials like marble or corten steel – to be used to maximum advantage. Ceramic furniture is made by cutting porcelain slabs of different thicknesses to shape, and then bonding them to a preformed framework, generally made of structural composite panels. Roberto prefers Wedi, but also uses other foam-based backerboards for these base structures. These panels usually contain a

core of light polymeric material and are covered on both sides by a thin layer of resin with high mechanical properties, reinforced by fiberglass mesh. To ensure maximum stability and waterproofing, Roberto recommends that these bearing framework panels are glued using CerCol’s F.50 Policol Eco using a notched trowel. But perhaps the most critical procedure is when the cut porcelain stoneware slabs are glued to these reinforced composite panels using CerCol’s F.49 Poxyrapid, which is applied with a 3mm triangularshaped trowel to ensure 100% coverage.
The external edges are grouted with F.40 Cerpoxy Art after protecting the edges with masking tape to ensure there is not colour bleed through. After 24 hours, if required, these edges can be sanded down for a perfect finish. Roberto also demonstrated how this epoxy grout can be easily removed with a hot air gun and craft knife should any imperfections, such as an air bubble, need correcting. This grout removal process is incredibly fast and clean, and simply cannot be achieved with cementitious grouts. It is even possible – years after the initial application – to remove

and replace all the original grout in this manner, either to refresh the appearance or to spice up the installation by adding a contrasting grout. The other main take-away from Roberto’s masterclass is the vital importance of the accuracy and detail of the slab cutting prior to assembly. He went through the correct sequencing of cuts to relieve the inherent manufacturing stresses in the XXL porcelain slabs, an area little understood by most installers/ fabricators, but the key advice concerned the machining of the mitre itself. 6
Most of the stone fabricators professed to an excessive concentration on achieving precise butt-jointed 90-degree mitres. This may look great initially but is a potential area of failure should any movement occur in the worktop or island, as any failure will take place in the weakest area: the thin edge of the mitre itself. Roberto advises cutting a precise mitre and then machining the edge again to remove 1mm of material to create a “bird’s beak detail. The resultant 2mm gap is then filled with colour-matched CerCol F.40 Cerpoxy Art to create a virtually invisible grouted edge that will absorb such slight movements, preventing damage to the slab. It is a neat, simple, but highly important detail that could prevent many failures and site recalls. F.40 Cerpoxy Art is a twocomponent epoxy adhesive/sealant suitable for grout joints up to 10mm wide. It comprises a thick paste and a liquid additive. It is supplied in 10kg buckets (9.0 + 1.0) or 5kg buckets (4.5 + 0.5). The grout contains tiny aggregates allowing an equivalent finish to that of the surface of the ceramic slab to be obtained. After the grout is applied, the surface should be finished off immediately using water, white felt and a cellulose sponge to obtain a smooth and homogeneous result. n

exports to Australia during December 2019 and January 2020. His company was contracted by the Istanbul Mineral and Metals Exporters’ Association (IMMIB) to organise the one-on-one meetings. They were held at the Sheraton Melbourne and Hyatt Regency Sydney respectively. In terms of promoting the events, Baris explains, “We ran an awareness campaign promoting the events through Discovering Stone magazine, e-newsletters and LinkedIn advertising. We also built our own contact lists through publicly available data, and researched the companies involved”. IMMIB contributes to the development of foreign trade that is aligned with the interests of the Turkish government. It represents around 25,000 members that produce and/or export products and services. More specifically, it works to increase exports in the minerals sector that includes the natural stone industry. The organisation also provides export advice and assistance to members to raise their competitiveness in global markets. IMMIB lifts the profile of the minerals sector through trade exhibitions, buying and trade missions as well as projects.
Turkish Carrara white marble

Stone origins Turkey has one of the world’s oldest marble production sites and has history dating back 4000 years producing natural stone, starting at Marmara Island. It provided material for statues and monuments for the ancient Greeks and Romans. The country is also a leading supplier travertine. Similar to Italy, Turkey has a major reputation for stone quarrying. It has close to 5,000 natural stone quarries and approximately 1,750 workshops and factories located there. The country yields more than 250 different types of marble and travertine, shipping it to more than 130 countries around the world. According to the Turkish government, more than 30 per cent of the world’s reserves of marble are in Turkey. Most of it comes from an area west of the 31st Parallel and south of Istanbul. White and travertine are its best-known natural stone products, but the country is a source of granite, limestone, and onyx too. One of the top-selling Turkish products is Turkish Carrara. Not to be confused with Italian Carrara marble, it’s a white marble with more of a yellowish hue than the pure white Italian version. But it’s a choice that gives the same crisp, clean look of white marble at a fraction of the pr ice. n
AWISA exhibition postponement The AWISA exhibition planned for July this year was going to include probably the largest display of stone processing machinery ever presented at an Australian trade show. Six major suppliers had booked for the show, at the very time when the stone industry is wanting to learn more about modern and automated equipment. However, at the AWISA Ltd board meeting on Friday 6 March the decision was made to postpone the AWISA exhibition planned for 1-4 July 2020. The reasons all relate to coronavirus. The board first and foremost considered the health and safety of visitors and the staff of exhibiting companies. It is clear that in Australia the coronavirus is only in its early stages, and on the basis of the experience in China and other countries it still has many weeks or months to run its course. Normally an AWISA exhibition has a combined attendance in the order of 12,000, both visitors and exhibitors. At the moment, such gatherings are allowed but that may change. Then there is the subject of the confidence that people may have in planning travel in 15 weeks time. This confidence is already suffering. AWISA has never been in the business of running half-hearted exhibitions. The association did not hold an event in 2010 because of the GFC, and the board feels that the circumstances today have similarities. In the board’s view, the shows that followed 2010 were far stronger than if a diminished 2010 exhibition had taken place. Then the board considered the effect of coronavirus on the woodworking industry worldwide. Three of the key countries that contribute products to AWISA exhibitions are
Germany, Italy and China. All have cancelled or postponed exhibitions in the last few weeks. Many AWISA members are experiencing difficulty sourcing products from overseas in time for the planned July dates. Especially China where factories have been shut for weeks. Worldwide, there are shortages of components and of shipping containers, and in some cases products are not allowed to be moved within, or out of countries. There is also the problem of getting technicians and product specialists to travel to Australia - all essential to the running of the exhibition. Some companies and unions in Europe have banned international travel. Such travel is also currently uninsurable. Many major AWISA exhibitors bring between 10 and 25 technicians and other staff to the show. All of them are essential to the running of a show of AWISA’s size. This decision has not been taken lightly. It is not a panicked or hysterical reaction, but a businesslike reaction to what is actually happening in other parts of the world, and to what is highly likely to happen in Australia.
AWISA 2020
The board is bitterly disappointed that this decision has had to be made. AWISA 2020 was close to being sold out. The decision to postpone was made just as this magazine going to print, and discussions were about to be held with the venue regarding dates a few months later than originally planned. Up to date information will be available at www.awisa.com/exhibition. ■

Sealant solutions for natural stone Joe Simpson writes that with the correct selection of cleaning and maintenance products, caring for natural stone or tiled surfaces should be relatively straightforward. It will extend the life and preserve the value of the investment in these beautiful surfaces.
E
normous care goes into the manufacture and supply of natural stone, porcelain, and ceramic tile. Their individual aesthetics and formats are carefully engineered, along with their performance characteristics. However, when it comes to maintenance, these hugely varied materials are all too often viewed collectively as “tiles” … and treated in the same way. This is a fundamental mistake. The care and maintenance regimes for “man-made” ceramic
and porcelain surfaces – including sintered stone; conglomerates such a quartz solid surfacing; and each and every family of natural stone should be created individually. In terms of the actual regime, they may follow similar paths, starting with the vitally important initial clean; but the products used in each case should be specific to the material being cleaned and, if necessary, sealed. 14
Maintaining natural stone products often involve an initial post-installation clean, often called a builder’s clean

First step An initial post-installation clean, often referred to as a builder’s clean, is the vital first step in any effective maintenance regime. It will remove manufacturing debris and installation dirt, including any excess grout and adhesive. This very important step should always be carried out before any sealer is applied. If you try to apply a sealer onto a dirty surface, it will not be properly absorbed. This will affect the performance of the sealer, and the overall surface aesthetic. What’s more, subsequent on-going maintenance will be more difficult. To ensure that the correct cleaning product is used, it is vital to determine the acid sensitivity of the natural stone or other surface finish. If the surface isn’t acid sensitive, and if you have to use an acid detergent, it is generally good practice to choose a safe “buffered” acid-based cleaner, rather than a muriatic acid-based alternative. Muriatic acid releases fumes that can harm both humans and the environment. They can also cause substantial damage to stainless steel and aluminium profiles. Buffered acids, on the other hand, do not emit fumes or cause erosion. Certain materials, including polished marble, limestone and travertine, will not withstand an acid wash, and a pH-neutral or alkaline product should always be used. Alkaline products are effective at removing organic dirt and polymers from grouts and adhesives, but they are not suitable for polished stone tiles. A safe selection, in all cases, is a pH-neutral cleaner. A concentrated product is a great option as it can be used at various dilutions to cater for most cleaning needs. Once the stone tiles have been thoroughly cleaned, the surface is then ready to be sealed.
Prevent, don’t cure The fundamental maxim is that the best way to prevent stains on natural stone — or, indeed, any porous hard surface — is to treat it with a protective sealer. Sealers can repel spills on the surface, causing them to bead so that they can be wiped away before they have a chance to penetrate the stone. Sealers generally fall into two

basic categories: topical sealers and impregnating sealers. Impregnating sealers line the pores of natural stone, allowing the stone to breathe, while maintaining the natural stone’s strength. Impregnating sealers have a natural look and provide a barrier against oils and other liquid contaminants. Some manufacturers have taken this impregnation technology a step further; using nano particles to create sealers that penetrate deeply into the treated material, providing what is billed as invisible, long-lasting protection. Topical sealers, on the other hand, are hard-wearing surface sealers that provide a physical barrier, protecting natural stone or other surfaces from normal wear and tear. These sealers can have either a gloss or a matt finish. They can make the sealed area slippery when wet, and so anti-slip agents can be added, if required, to counteract this effect. Some sealers can enhance (darken) natural stone, while others retain the stone’s natural hue. As a result, different stone types may require different grades of sealer, depending on the intended use, and the desired aesthetic.
Most natural stone and tile grout are cement-based, and porous. Because of this, sealant companies recommend sealing cement-based grout joints as soon as possible after installation to provide protection against water- and oil-based stains
Selection and application
Most natural stone surfaces will need to be sealed, to protect them from water, oil, and other contaminants. Some very porous stone surfaces may even need to be sealed before grouting. Treatments come in many forms, both water-based and solvent-based. Water-based products offer a host of advantages and, compared with solvent-based formulations, many manufacturers claim that they perform equally well, or even better, than solvent-based alternatives. Waterbased treatments can normally be applied over residual moisture and, somewhat surprisingly, tend to have faster drying times, cutting project time-scales. What’s more, water-based formulations are now available to meet most required tasks: to protect from stains; to repel water; to 16

enhance surfaces; and even block efflorescence. As ecological considerations have become more of a priority on the political and social agenda, manufacturers have increasingly promoted water-based sealants. They are better for the environment and the tradespeople who apply them. In particular, they help limit the amount of VOCs (volatile organic compounds) released into the atmosphere. With solvent-based treatments, application methods are different and drying times are extended. But surfaces have to be completely dry before a solvent is applied. Ventilation may also be required to extract fumes. There are still some heavy-duty sealers, particularly those for external applications, that are solvent-based. These can offer some
application advantages, particularly for aerosol sprays. Vanity tops and food preparation areas may need to have an impregnator applied. If required, users and installers should make sure that it is safe for use on food preparation surfaces. Product manufacturers will able to answer any questions.
Making a choice Once natural stone or tiled surfaces have been sealed, cleaning is quite simple. Natural stone surfaces should always be cleaned with a product that is specifically manufactured to be sensitive to its unique mineral composition. For everyday cleaning, PH neutral cleaners, with a gentle formula, should be used to remove soiling. These cleaners can reinforce the

original protective seal to help prevent future staining. General spray-and-wipe style household cleaning products — that are not specifically formulated for natural stone or tile — should not be used. These formulations can break down the sealer, undermining its protective properties, and making the natural stone or grout joints susceptible to staining. Many common cleaning products — including those that contain abrasives, lemon, vinegar, bleach, or ammonia — can actually etch away the polish, degrade the sealer, and discolour, or even scratch, the surface. Avoid using these products, and select alternatives that are scientifically formulated for use on natural stone and ceramic tile. Of course, accidents do happen, and so most suppliers offer powerful formulations to cope with specific problems. For instance, professionalstrength acidic cleaners can remove hard water deposits, grout haze, efflorescence, and soap scum. They are particularly suitable for use on ceramic and porcelain tiles. There are also professional strength, alkaline-based formulas that can remove even the most stubborn grease stains. There are specific products designed to remove deep-set oil stains from natural stone surfaces, and formulas that can remove mould and mildew stains without degrading stone or grout. They are supplemented by polishes that add a brilliant shine to polished

stone without leaving a greasy film, enhancers that can deepen the natural colour of stone while providing stain protection, and topical gloss finishing sealers that provide shine and deepen the colour of natural stone. These are particularly recommended for textured or tumbled natural stone.
Etch marks or water stains Many common household items have the power to degrade a natural stone or tiled surface. One of the most vexatious is etching, which is the result of a chemical reaction that occurs when acid comes in contact with a susceptible surface. Etch marks on stone surfaces generally resemble water spots or a worn polish. These can be caused by orange juice, coffee, vinegar, wine, tomato products, mustard, and many common soft drinks. All these liquids are highly acidic and can etch, dull, or discolour most marble, limestone, travertine, and
cement-based grout. It is less well known that common toiletries such as perfume, mouthwash, and toothpaste can also damage a stone’s surface. Ceramic and porcelain tile, and acid-resistant stones such as granite, slate and sandstone are not usually affected. Sealing can provide a vital window in which to wipe up a spill, but sealers may not stop the chemical reaction entirely, so it is best to provide a physical barrier for acid-sensitive stones. While on-going maintenance tackles everyday dirt, grime, and atmospheric agents, some installations may also need a periodic deep clean to remove dirt build-up. Unsuitable maintenance products can undo everything achieved to this point. They will affect the performance of the sealer and can also damage the surface. For example, if an acidic cleaning product is used on an acidsensitive stone, it will etch the surface. Likewise, an alkaline cleaning product

used on a polished limestone will, over time, dull the surface. Inferior products often leave residues behind, and many flooring treatments contain a “maintainer” that creates a surface shine. Over time, this builds up and becomes a key to dirt. If not addressed, the floor will become stained and, in extreme cases, a slip hazard can be created. 18

Just cleaning a natural stone surface with pure water is not a realistic option. However this is quite common, because fear of using the wrong detergent puts many people off using any detergent at all. If a surface is “cleaned” by mopping with water; this just mixes and spreads the dirt, which builds up and becomes trapped in the porosity of the stone. This creates a key for further dirt and the stone tiles become steadily harder to clean. Once again, the safe option is a pH-neutral cleaner. Many products do not need rinsing at low concentrations and will not leave a residue.

Care and maintenance
Porcelain and ceramics are both man-made products and their care regimes are similar. Once again, an initial post installation clean should be carried out to remove and debris and installation dirt. Generally, buffered acid and alkaline detergents will be suitable. When it comes to sealing ceramic and porcelain tiles, there are a host of conflicting views. Many people think that all porcelain and ceramic tiles don’t need sealing. However, with polished porcelain, micro-pores are opened up during the polishing process. As a result, many polished porcelains are factory sealed but this may be only sufficient to protect the surface during installation. A further seal — after a thorough initial clean — is recommended, to protect the tile and grout joint. In addition, some very porous man-made tiles, like cement-based encaustics, will require sealing before and after grout is applied. There are now water-based sealers that can be used on all stone and polished porcelain surfaces, and which offer other benefits including “food-safe” certification. Many quartz surface manufacturers report that worktop discolouration often turns out to be stains held on the surface of the worktop by unnecessary topical sealants. Unable to penetrate the non-absorbent surface, they simply dry on top and provide a key for staining. It is essential with quartz and other solid surfaces, as well as fully-vitrified porcelain and sintered stone, to always follow the surface

manufacturer’s instructions when it comes to surface sealing. On-going maintenance of porcelain and ceramics tackles the same issues seen in stone installations. Alkaline and pH-neutral detergents may be suitable, but pHneutral cleaners are the safest option. Inferior cleaning products which contain “maintainers” can be a big issue with porcelains and ceramics,
18 | DISCOVERING STONE #36 | www.discoveringstonemagazine.com.au
especially those with textured finishes. They will leave a waxy shine on the surface and this will build up, attracting dirt. Very quickly, tiles will become stained by organic foot traffic and, in some cases, a slip hazard will be created. Also, on polished porcelain, the maintainer build up can cause the surface to dull, rather than enhance the polished finish. n
Locally made and serviced sealants
T
he differences between purchasing Australian made products and imported products aren’t always obvious at first glance. However, the decision to buy Australian made will often pay off in more ways than one, according to Neil Paynter, product manager at Actichem. He explains, ”While the differences in physical quality may only show themselves over a period of time, there are many benefits that Australian made products like the Actichem range can offer over imported competitors. “While we do acknowledge that some key ingredients are sourced from international suppliers, the Actichem products are made using only the highest quality materials. At Actichem, we insist on ensuring that our supply chain is sustainable and we avoid being reliant on supplies that don’t have a sustainable future in Australia. “In recent months we have seen many projects held up due to limitation on supplies from overseas, that is why Australian made products can give you an edge in reliability. “Furthermore, being an Australian made product, Actichem products will always be made to Australian standards and with the local climate in mind. Imported products may be fine for their country of origin’s climate, but many do not consider Australia’s dramatic, frequently changing weather patterns and can age — or fail — much faster as a result.” There is also the added bonus of supporting local communities, and ensuring that top quality products can continue to be produced. Actichem believes there has never been a more important time to support Australian owned and operated businesses. “Australian suppliers are only ever a phone call away, should end-users need advice on a decision or any after sales services, and consumers have additional peace of mind that their warranty is being provided by a local company, which has been operating for over twenty years and is here to stay,” adds Neil. n
IF ONLY THEY KNEW... Meet Ed and Sarah. They love their home and recently retiled their balcony using natural stone. The job was perfect and they were thrilled. But 1 month later, they started to get leaching as well as picture framing.
IF ONLY THEIR STONE MERCHANT OR TILER HAD RECOMMENDED EFFLOCK Efflock is an advanced additive that prevents migration of calcium hydroxide and other salts that cause efflorescence. It also provides a hydrophobic function for mortar to minimise picture framing in moisture sensitive stone. When added to screed, render, tile adhesive and grout, Efflock provides a primary water barrier and is proven to be a reliable solution for preventing efflorescence.

Sealant for stability and strength
S
ure Seal® Consolidator Sealer is specially designed to naturally stabilise and strengthen crumbling stone, seal and strengthen stone pool coping, sandstone, and other soft or damaged natural stone surfaces. It works by penetrating beneath the stone surface. This sealer assists in stopping stone erosion and halts further damage. Sure Seal, the company, said the Consolidator Sealer provides unparalleled protection against water, moss, efflorescence and alkalis to maintain the natural look and beauty of stone surfaces. It is invisible upon application and will not change the appearance of the treated surface. Specific benefits include: • Easy to apply • High performing • Resistant against alkaline • Preserves the natural finish of stone • Ideal to use around swimming pools • Helps to prevent salt water corrosion • Water based sealer is environmentally friendly • Strengthens the structure of natural stone • Consolidates loose and friable surfaces n
A water-based solution
S
pirit Sealers asks the following questions: Are all water base sealers equal? Is it safe? Does it come with warnings? Is workplace health and safety important? Obviously when choosing a sealer for any given project, it is important to choose the right sealer for the job. There may be questions users need to consider that should influence the decision including: • Is it safe to the environment? • Does water base mean a safer product? • Is the sealer safe for your workplace? • Does environmentally friendly mean a compromise on quality? Spirit Sealers believe users should be aware the need for low VOC (volatile organic compound) sealers is increasing with the community’s growing interest in lowering toxicity and chemical usage. The company said its Water Based Premium Seal VOC content is extremely low. At less than 1gram per litre, there is no measurable impact on the environment or the user. This is well under the Australian recognised and official guidelines limit of 50grams per litre for VOC content. Tested for proven quality, Spirit Sealers said its Water Based Premium Seal is second to none. It also encourages users to review the safety data sheet of the sealer intended for use prior to its purchase. Spirit Sealers always offers a variety of sealers in the range, from preseals to rapid drying, to water based, to colour enhancing and more, for the finishing touches on any job. It prides itself on continuing to evolve its products to meet the demands of the market as well as the environment. n
An app for choosing sealers
S
olution Sealers said it is the first in the industry to develop an app for its architects and specifiers to simplify their sealer selections. The Sealers for Stone & Tile Product selector app – available on Android and Apple – is a comprehensive selection tool that can make finding the right sealing solution easy. It has been designed to assist users in quickly finding the right sealant for their projects, and provides the relevant technical information and product guides. This app highlights many FAQ’s and provides users with additional sealant information, a “How to Clean” guide and a coverage estimator to confirm the required sealer for each surface. According to Solution Sealers, it has received excellent feedback since is launch because it helps to eliminate incorrect product being used on the stone type. In another company development, Solution Sealers has been working with Queensland construction companies to deliver a high-quality product and finish, for the natural stone used throughout the Sunshine Coast University Hospital. A commercial grade, impregnating sealer was needed to assist in the long-term maintenance of these surfaces and QUANTUM was selected for its performance values and proven track record on many other local projects.
QUANTUM was designed during the construction of the Q1 Tower, a 322.5-metre skyscraper on the Gold Coast. It officially opened in November 2005 and is now the sixthtallest residential tower in the world. At the time, it required a higher performing sealer than others that could be sourced. As an Australian manufacturer, Solution Sealers said it was able to create a product that not only met its requirements but exceeded the performance values of our competitors. The Sunshine Coast University Hospital joins a list of projects benefiting from QUANTUM because it can easily clean the building’s natural stone and masonry surfaces. It helps protect against oil-based staining, food products and moisture uptake. n

SILICOSIS SAFETY AND PROTECTION WorkSafe Victoria provides tools to help create a safe and healthy workplace. As a statutory authority of the Victorian state government, it asks: Are you a worker or an employer in the stonemason industry?
I
n the last year, Victoria has seen a significant increase in workers diagnosed with silicosis and about 80% of these have worked in the stonemason industry. When workers do things like cut, grind, drill or polish products that contain crystalline silica, it releases very fine dust. Some of the dust is so small they may not be able to see it. When breathed in, this dust can cause silicosis and other related diseases. These diseases don’t discriminate. They can affect young workers just starting out in their trade, tradespeople in the prime of their working lives as well as older workers looking forward to retirement. Those in the stonemasonry, construction and the extractive
industries may all be exposed to crystalline silica dust. Benchtop fabrication workers are at higher risk because they regularly work with engineered stone; a product that can contain up to 95% crystalline silica. In response to the alarming silicosis rates, Worksafe has developed a free silicosis health assessment program for all past and present workers in the Victorian stonemason industry. It is really important stonemasons and other industry professionals have a respiratory health assessment if they have worked with or still work with crystalline silica. It’s easy to register by calling WorkSafe Advisory on 1800 136 089 (option 1, option 3) or email healthscreening@worksafe.vic.

gov.au and leave your name and contact number. The health assessment program has helped Worksafe identify workers who have silicosis or associated diseases, such as lung cancer and autoimmune disorders. Early detection of these diseases can lead to far better health outcomes. Since the program began in May last year, close to 700 stonemasons have registered for a free health assessment. Sadly, there has already been over 60 positive diagnosis (all data is accurate as of March 2020). A number of stonemasons are still progressing through the health 30

SILICOSIS SAFETY AND PROTECTION assessment program because completion can take up to three months. No Victorian worker should feel unsafe at work. Worksafe is taking the necessary steps to ensure workers in the industry are provided with safe and healthy workplaces. Its silica action plan includes an increased focus on compliance, enforcement, awareness and education. Some core outputs of the plan ensure Worksafe can help businesses prevent this disease in the workplace and support stonemasons through the health assessment program. There is still a lot that is unknown about silicosis and its associated diseases. However, Worksafe is committed to ongoing research so it can provide the stonemason industry with the best support and knowledge.

As part of its continuous support for this industry, WorkSafe has introduced a fast-tracked claims process, support for workers throughout the assessment program and those with accepted claims — including psychological support for them and their families — and re-training for those who, for their own health, need to down tools for good and seek new employment. There are controls available to reduce exposure to crystalline silica dust. Ensure you and your co-workers: • use tools with water suppression • on tool extraction • wear fit-for-purpose respirators • carry out air monitoring • regular health checks

REGULATION CHANGES The Victorian Government amended the Occupational Health and Safety Regulations 2017 to give workers in the stonemasonry industry have greater protection. Uncontrolled cutting, grinding and abrasive polishing of engineered stone with power tools is prohibited. The amendments came into effect on 20 August 2019. Industry professionals must ensure they understand the changes. Visit worksafe.vic.gov. au/crystalline-silica for further information.
NEW COMPLIANCE CODE Victoria’s first silica compliance code “Managing exposure to crystalline silica – engineered stone” is now available. This code provides critical guidance for employers working with engineered stone. It includes information to assist with compliance with the ban on uncontrolled dry cutting and how to monitor workers’ health. This code applies to all workplaces where engineered stone is being handled. If you are an employer, contractor, supplier or manufacturer please read this code and implement the required changes to your workplace. Contact Worksafe about a free health assessment. Please call WorkSafe Advisory on 1800 136 089 (option 1, option 3) or email: healthscreening@worksafe. vic.gov.au to find out more and register for the health assessment program. SUPPORTING INDUSTRY SAFETY
S
ince its establishment almost 20 years ago, Farnese Australia said it has always met the demands the stone fabrication industry has had to face to improve the way professional end-users process stone. As the industry faces its biggest challenge, silicosis, this is turn affects how it continues to ensure stone fabricators are protected and work more safely than ever before. Everyone’s health remains a priority and this is balanced with the need to grow and maintain a viable business, the company said. Compliance with new regulations is mandatory and won’t be easy but necessary going forward. With the issues of dry cutting and grinding at the centre of most work practices, most stone work will now need to be performed by wet processing to reduce the considerable amount of risk to the fabricator. Fortunately, Farnese Australia said it has a forward thinking approach in terms of its range of affordable stone processing machinery. It places an emphasis on easy to use machines that eliminate the need to work dry and assist in improving production whilst working more safely. Most of its machinery keeps the operator at a distance and reduces any further risk, according to the company. As most dry cutting and grinding predominantly operates around cutting drop in or undermount sink
work, Farnese has a range of CNC machines that can address these operations and increase production. Preventing silicosis also means water recycling has become a necessity to ensure all the stone slurry that drops onto the factory floor is removed while wet, and processed immediately. This means the final waste is collected into mud bags and disposed of while it remains wet, cutting down on factory water consumption at the same time.
EASYSINK This compact CNC machine is designed to simplify the task of doing sink cutouts at an affordable price. The EASYSINK comes with a user-friendly touch screen interface to machine sink cutouts parametrically. It allows users to machine non-complicated shapes such as squares, circles and oval shapes, changing dimensions and the radius for corners with common sink templates. For other non standard shapes, these can be supplied on demand. Sink cutouts can be processed within the front and rear pneumatic clamps up to 1200 by 600mm on slabs over three metres long by 700mm. A laser indicator can help locate and position the centre of the cutout and the machine is
also equipped with a manual tool changer, lubrication pump and takes up a small footprint, saving valuable factory space.
ALEXIA GEN2 The Alexia automates the cutting, drilling and polishing of sink cutouts. This machine has automatic tool changing with 23 stations. The main feature of the Alexia is its user-friendly interface, the software has been designed for MS Windows and is intuitive and simple to use. It is pre-loaded with common sink templates listed by brands including Oliveri, Franke, Clark and Blanco. Additional sinks sizes and shapes can be easily created using the parametric section that extends the machine’s cutting capabilities. The Alexia has the ability to connect directly to the internet which allows the Farnese office to log into a customer’s machine and help them with training and troubleshooting. Inclined drain grooves can be cut either onto the bench top or incorporated into the polished flat drain board. The width of the grooves are dictated by the tooling selected. The length is inputted on “grooving” selections and is in relation to and in proportion with, the centre of the sink cut out. The Alexia can also perform edge profile work (for example, Lambstongue, bullnose etc.) subject to tools selected. These can be supplied at additional cost to standard tooling provided. n

tonemasons, amongst several other industries including construction and mining, still need protection against crystalline silica dust. However the current COVID-19 crisis has made it increasingly difficult for many to source N95 disposable masks. CleanSpace respirators are reusable, which means the industry can continue to operate safely and efficiently, without supply shortages that could cripple operations or put workers in danger. Silica dust is harmful when inhaled into lungs. It is 100 times smaller than a grain of sand, so small it can be inhaled without knowing. Respirable crystalline silica exposure can cause silicosis, a debilitating and irreversible lung condition that can cut short careers, reduce quality of life and lead to death. It is also linked to lung cancer, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and kidney disease. When looking to protect yourself or your staff from any airborne contaminants, Powered Air Purifying Respirators (PAPRs), offer high and reliable protection, far exceeding disposable masks. CleanSpace respirators are a revolution in the area of respiratory protection because while they provide all the protection of a PAPR, they a free from belts, battery packs and hoses which make them more comfortable and easy to deploy.
When used in hot or humid conditions, CleanSpace respirators provide cool, clean air to the user and eliminate fogging and moisture. They are also light, easy to put on, reliably safe and comfortable. These smart powered devices are easily operated using a one-button smart system. Their unique features mean more workers wear these respirators for a full shift every time. CleanSpace assists its clients to be safe and compliant when working around silica dust. Compared to disposable masks, CleanSpace respirators are high protection reusable devices with economic advantages, as the annual cost of replacing disposables stacks up. Disposable masks are well-known for causing fogging and discomfort, leading to low compliance, frequent stopping or mask changes. To guard against silica exposure, state regulators have moved to recommending staff wear powered respiratory protection using a minimum of a P2 filter. CleanSpace respirators meet and exceed these requirements with a P3 filter. Regardless of whether workers see the dust or not, silica is a hazard they cannot afford to ignore. Under the Standards, all worn tight fitting respirators, (regardless of whether it’s a disposable mask or powered
respirator), must achieve a correct fit to ensure the wearer is protected. Facial hair, including stubble, beards, moustaches and sideburns, between the edge of a tight-facing facepiece and the face will prevent the respirator from sealing properly. CleanSpace offers both half face and full face masks. The full face mask also has a high impact rating. Its respirators are compact systems that have up to six hours run time and fast/ top up charging. “The feedback we get from teams wearing CleanSpace Ultra, full face mask for mining activities, is that the mask is comfortable to wear all day, and the cool fresh air on the face is a dramatic improvement on disposable or reusable half masks,” said CleanSpace CEO Alex Birrell. “They have also told us there is no fogging or hot moisture on their face.” CleanSpace respirators are available in different models with a range of particulate and combination gas filters depending on the task requirements. CleanSpace EX is intrinsically safe approved and can be worn in potentially explosive environments. Ultra is IP rated 66, making it water tolerant and CleanSpace2 is the standard model suitable for those that do not require the aforementioned features. The newly launched HALO is designed specifically for laboratories and testing facilities. The company’s team of product specialists can assist with onsite product training, fit testing, trouble shooting and instructions on maintenance. With the renewed focus of regulators and the industry on silica, it is an opportune time to re-evaluate your site’s respiratory program and equipment. n

S.E.A. GROUP INFORMS ABOUT SAFETY
S
afety Equipment Australia (S.E.A. Group) provide some respiratory terms, definitions and differences. What is a negative-pressure respirator? What is the meaning of face-seal? What is the difference between qualitative and quantitative respirator testing? Many terms in breathing protection might not be clear at first glance. One good place to start decoding the terminology used in the field of breathing safety is the “Australian and New Zealand Standards 1715:2009 – selection, use and maintenance of respiratory equipment”. In it, a glossary explains some important definitions and differentiations used by health professionals, and well worth perusing for all respirator users. Here are some basic terms:
NEGATIVE VERSUS POSITIVEPRESSURE RESPIRATORS In a negative-pressure respirator, the lungs perform the job of drawing contaminated air through a filter. A positive-pressure respirator can work in three ways: clean air is supplied through an air-line from a remote source; clean air can be carried in a cylinder (breathing apparatus); or a fan motor can draw contaminated air through filters (powered air-purifying respirator or PAPR).
AIR-PURIFYING VERSUS AIR-LINE RESPIRATOR An air-purifying respirator cleans contaminated air through a filter or filters. An air-line respirator supplies clean air from a remote source through a breathing hose.
FULL VERSUS HALF FACE-PIECE A full face-piece (full mask) covers the face, eyes, nose and mouth. It has a visor for clear vision. A half face-piece (half mask) covers only the nose and mouth. It has no visor.
TIGHT VERSUS LOOSEFITTING FACE/HEAD PIECE A tight-fitting (also close-fitting) device relies on a tight skin seal in order that no surrounding air can leak into the face-piece. Therefore, it requires a clean-shaven face with smooth skin. A loose-fitting device (often called a head-top) operates on a supply of clean air that maintains a positive pressure inside the device, so that no outside air can enter. It does not rely on face seal, so even people with a stubble or a beard can get adequate protection.
QUALITATIVE VERSUS QUANTITATIVE INDIVIDUAL FIT TEST In a qualitative fit test, the wearer of the respirator is exposed to a test agent with a particular smell or taste. If the wearer can detect the smell or taste, the respirator has failed to provide adequate 36 | DISCOVERING STONE #35 | www.discoveringstonemagazine.com.au
protection. Qualitative fit tests can be unreliable, as people’s sense of smell and taste can vary, or if the person has a cold or other affliction that can affect the ability to detect the test agent. A quantitative test does not rely on sensory abilities. It measures the difference between the (contaminated) air outside the mask and the (filtered) air inside the mask. Thus, the protection factor of the respirator can be established.
MINIMUM VERSUS ASSIGNED PROTECTION FACTOR A protection factor is a guide to how effective a respirator is at supplying breathing-quality air to the user. A minimum protection factor is the least protection that can be expected of a respirator, intact, complete, correctly assembled and fitted by a trained user, and used according to the manufacturer’s instructions. An assigned protection factor is given to any respirator of a particular type, regardless of the actual protection factor that can be achieved by that respirator. Caesarstone and Wattyl collaborate Two of Australia’s most innovative interiors brands are working together to create pairings of colours and materials in surface finishes and fittings for consumers
T
he collaboration between Wattyl and Caesarstone, in which a diverse collection of quartz surfaces are paired with paint colours, will provide an inspirational guide to many homeowners looking to update their interiors. It has created a series of palettes featuring a combination of Caesarstone surfaces and Wattyl
paints, paired with metallic tapware finishes from Sussex and door cabinetry from Polytec. Key to this interior design pairing is the subtle diversity in colour palettes — ranging from crisp whites and softest greys to sublime neutrals and deep, dark charcoals and black. And while neutrals are preferred by most consumers, Wattyl has introduced a few more saturated colours, showing how to use them to the best effect with surfaces and other decorative elements. The Wattyl/Caesarstone collaboration caters for a wide selection of architectural themes and consumer demographics, from those who want to learn how to create a customised, on-trend statement kitchen or bathroom to those wanting to nail the effortless style and elegance of a colour palette that is perennially fresh. Linda Hannah, Caesarstone Australia senior brand manager, explains: “The Caesarstone brand has long been recognised for its premium durability and the fact that it resists stains and chipping but we wanted to

highlight the fact that these practical features are never at the expense of style and design. “Open plan living is a feature of most modern homes, whereby the kitchen, dining and living areas meld seamlessly so selecting a colour and finishes palette is more complex than ever. We wanted to help the consumer make the best choice, confident that their selection is based on the knowledge and expertise of professional colour specialists. “Our collaboration with Wattyl illustrates these inspirational, fool proof design opportunities in a very visual way.” Sarah Stephenson, colour expert and Wattyl senior brand communications manager, said: “Consumers can lack confidence in their ability to pull a successful colour palette together. They want something that expresses their personality and has the sophistication of a designer-led project but they are unsure of how to get there. This collaboration has enabled Wattyl to give some really creative — and practical — examples of customised colour pairings.” n

Biesse transforms stair business Slattery & Acquroff Stairs is renowned for making distinctive, high end staircases. Its 25-year partnership with Biesse has seen the company implement the first five axis CNC machines in Australia and master the technology in the years that followed.
T
he story of S&A Stairs is about family and craft. It was established in 1920 as a small, local stair builder that serviced a market for the exclusive areas located primarily in the eastern. Today it is Australia’s only national stair builder, making and installing
stairs in more than 9000 homes a year. It is a business that has a culture of learning and invention. In factories around the country, S&A Stairs are doing things that many furniture makers and stair builders have not imagined, taking mere minutes to make pitched handrails,
cappings, scrolls and wreaths that would have taken weeks just a generation ago. The company’s approach to innovation means it always invests in the latest machinery and more importantly, people with the ability and dedication to program those machines.
Valuable people In the programming area, S&A Stairs have excelled, carving out an idiosyncratic design and manufacturing process that has set a benchmark for other stair builders around the world. According to director of operations, Tom Acquroff, S&A’s entrepreneurial DNA and a desire for innovation is a “lived culture” rather than something the company has enforced. It all began with Tom’s forefathers. “When the Great Depression came along, my great grandfather and his business partner would pack up a wheelbarrow and then walk Just a few of the talented staff working the Biesse machines at S&A Stairs

everything to site. Sometimes in the next suburb,” he said. At the time, Ted Slattery and Alec Acquroff, two migrants from Scotland, had gone out on their own to start a business and rented abandoned horse stables in the back streets of South Yarra, a inner Melbourne suburb. When times got tough, they spent the latter part of the 1920s doing whatever they had to do to survive. By the 1960s, during the post-war boom, S&A became the stair builder of choice for many architects. “We had a very cosmopolitan workforce,” said Tom. When it needed new staff, S&A found an incredible resource in migrants arriving from Europe, Germany and Italy who completely changed the skillset and dynamics of S&A. “We developed this new culture of quality and ingenuity, and many of those families who started with us in the 1960s are still permeating through the business today. They are the second and third generation families that are the lifeblood of our business,” he said. This attitude has developed into a strong work ethic and company culture that demands quality, according to Tom, when recalling the story of his great grandfather. It is also a way of protecting yourself from your competitors. “Quality is our point of difference. Quality and complexity are the tools we use to create barriers to entry. Innovation is safety,” he explains.
Arrival of machines While there had always been an emphasis for craft at S&A, the requirement and respect for technology came later. Led by Tom’s father, Robert Acquroff, and current managing director, Robert Beard, S&A began working with Australia’s largest home builder in the early 1990s, Henley Properties. Before long, they realised that a family business with 20 or 30 staff was desperately under-equipped to deal with the kind of quality and scale that Henley demanded. Tom remembers his father visiting William

Russell Doors with Rob Beard, where they saw their first Biesse CNC machine in 1996. Rob famously remarked, on first look, that the machine was very impressive, but doubted it could be applied effectively to stair building. Six weeks later, they bought their first Biesse CNC machine from Allwood Machinery. It is widely recognised that Allwood and Biesse changed the landscape for furniture manufacturers in Australia, and with the purchase of their first machine, S&A were about to become a big part of that change. Over the next two decades, S&A Stairs became not only the biggest but probably the most well-regarded stair builder in Australia. By implementing CNC technology from Biesse, the company became known for its ability to manufacture elaborate stairs at scale, a reputation it still holds today. The new Biesse CNC machine cut lead times dramatically and improved the quality of the work.
Stair supplier S&A Stairs have become a major business that supplies eight out the 10 biggest residential builders in Australia, with 14 Biesse CNC machines across Victoria, New South Wales, Queensland and South Australia. “The Biesse CNC machines
make a unique product very quickly but more importantly to us, very consistently,” Tom said. “We have to work to the timelines of major builders and with Biesse, we know what we are going to get that. Stair making is a highly complex business, but it is intensely rewarding.” While furniture making is often repeatable, the stair making process is for S&A Stairs is still largely custom. Thirty five percent of S&A’s output is still for tailor-made stairs, so the challenge is to make bespoke products with both precision and efficiency. To achieve its distinctive set of production constraints, S&A Stairs rely on the Biesse Group to supply machines that can produce intricate components quickly, while maintaining the standards that the business has set for their customers. “Biesse has transformed our business. We currently build and install 150 stairs a week, from split-level stairs to those in Toorak mansions. With the consistent product produced on the Biesse CNC machines, our time spent installing stairs has been reduced enormously. “We are not a Toyota production line; we are still artisans, specialists, and the Biesse product fits our 42

needs very well. We are crossmaterial specialists using a range of Australian and imported hardwoods, softwoods, stone, acrylic, glass and stainless steel,” Tom said. S&A Stairs use many forms of software including AutoCAD©, 3D stair software and freeform 3D modelling software and they all interact with the Biesse CNC machines. “We also use bSolid for our 5-axes machining. It is a visual process that simplifies the set-up for our most complex parts. Some components that took several hours to machine are now made in as little as twelve minutes!” Tom said. S&A continue to work with Biesse because it provides a good mix of hardware and software. “It is a mix that has really worked for us,” he adds. “It appeals to us from a value proposition. The everimproving service is fundamental in our decision to continue our long partnership with the Biesse Group. One of the hardest things to achieve is high quality at scale. High quality at low scale is achievable due to our talented individuals. High volume without detail is achievable through processes and machines. High quality and scale are a mixture of both these things.”
There are many capable stair makers in Australia, so Tom is focused on growing the business and gaining more customers, and Biesse is fundamental to this goal. “Biesse [machines] are both flexible and powerful and produce high-quality work that is repeatable. Biesse is an excellent workshop tool for us,” he said. “In our work we find a balance between design, craft and technology. We produce stairs for some of Australia’s largest and most wellrespected builders, ten of these for over 50 years. We look for technology that makes our processes easier and provides a competitive advantage and Biesse certainly does both those things. “If we got a new Biesse CNC machine tomorrow, we would be running product on it ten minutes after it was commissioned. Our team understands the Biesse product very well and the people at Biesse have invested in us to provide the right outcome for us. We don’t feel like Biesse machines are anything but excellent.” n
