Dazzling Divas is such a fun and fresh look to the Waxahachie Downtown Square. This boutique offers looks for all ages of women coming from every background (yes, they even carry yoga pants.) Brittany’s vison came about in her childhood with, “Britt’s Boutique.” She began drafting up her business plan during high school and her hard work and planning enabled her to open her first store. If you have ever made the trip out to Bristol, Texas you know that your drive will be filled with picturesque views of homesteads, livestock and in the spring Ellis County’s iconic bluebonnets. With just a quick drive down I-45 you can find this small town gem 10 miles outside of Ennis and just under 20 miles from Waxahachie. The population is around 700 but soon will occupy more guests if Sarah Beauregard from The Range Resort has anything to do with it. Sarah and her husband Paul are set to open The Range Resort, a Airstream and Vintage Trailer Resort in October 2019. The Range itself is 30 acres and is the perfect place to pop over for a quick overnight stay or a weekend getaway.
The Range includes 20 full hook up concrete sites that contain patio areas in each one. Don’t own an Airstream or vintage trailer? There is no need to worry. The Range has you covered with nine of the pads already occupying Sarah and Paul’s very own vintage trailers they restored. Their trailers range from the 1950s to 1970s with the likes of Airstreams, Boles Aeros, Shasta, Ideal and more. Each model having just as many unique touches as the next! If you ask which one is the Beauregard’s favorite, they won’t be able to tell you, and once you step foot in one of these intricately restored trailers, you will understand why.

Once they drove around and saw all that it had to offer Sarah was sold at the idea of putting the resort in the quaint, little town. The Range Resort itself is welcoming and warm as you pull into the entry off of Slate Rock Road. It is there that you will be met with a smile from Sarah and her family. Listening to the Beauregard’s thoughtful planning and details for the resort will entice you to get packing.
The experience at the resort is made even more superior because each site is spaciously placed 100 feet in between the next one so you will have more than enough privacy when vacationing there. When asked how they got the idea to begin this resort, Sarah responded: “We could not find any place close to us to take our Airstream for the weekend, so we thought why not make one ourselves?” The Beauregard family currently lives in Dallas but has

Once you are there, you will have no reason to leave as the nicely paved roads of the 30 acres has everything you need during your stay. Amenities range from a bathhouse that includes a laundry mat, mercantile style store, coffee shop, restaurant, dog park, playground, stocked ponds for fishing bass, hiking trail, WiFi and a large barn for weddings and or corporate retreats. Areas for outdoor weddings can be found throughout the scenic acres. “We really tried to pack everything we would want as guests into the resort.” The Beauregard’s are seasoned “Airstreamers” and have traveled all over the country in their very own trailers. They surveyed “Airstream Addicts” from the beginning (what she likes to call their secret resource group on Facebook), so they know what most guests are looking for during their stay and with all the luxurious amenities who wouldn’t want to go visit The Range? For Sarah and her family, this journey started three years ago, and now, the opening day is just around the corner. “We have plans to add a garden and some other fun elements, but we really plan on listening to the needs and wants of our guests. If they want more vintage trailers to stay in, we will bring in more; if they would rather bring in their own, we will move ours out. It’s all about what they want.” Sarah also added that she wants to work with the community in sustaining the future of the resort and plans on doing this by having pop-up shops from local merchants in the mercantile and using local farmers in the restaurant. The Range Resort will no doubt be one of the happiest, love-filled places in Bristol as Sarah and her family aim to serve the community and all guests that check in from near and far. “I have been so amazed at our following and support on social media. People have traveled not only from the Dallas/ Fort Worth area but also from North Carolina, Virginia, New Mexico and Wisconsin to see us here and that has completely blown me away. Meet Kars Tamminga Born in Holland to an entrepreneurial family, Kars Tamminga grew up in the dairy industry. He got to Texas as soon as he could after deciding to carry on the family business and bring his expertise to Waxahachie in 1984. Now he is moving into a new phase and developing his land to give future homeowners a chance to live in the beautiful Pioneer Point neighborhood.
A New Chapter
Kars is a family man and has great support from his wife and children. They are all woven into this business and lifestyle that started while he was a Holland Dairyman. Having been here in Waxahachie for 35 years, he is excited about this new concept and challenge in knowing the good he is doing in developing new homes for other families and providing a place to create new memories at Pioneer Point. A lifelong soccer player, he continues to play his favorite sport in a 60 and older league.
The Holland Dairyman
Tamminga traveled all over Europe to learn about the various cultures and lifestyles before returning to Holland to start his own dairy farm. Beginning with 39 mature cows in 1966 and growing his farm to 240 by 1984. While traveling abroad to explore opportunities for expansion, his dairy needed help, and a woman answered an ad for a job. Grace and Kars met and “that was that,” he says, that was in 1966 and they were married a year later. They will be celebrating 52 years of marriage this year. They have four children who were raised in Waxahachie but visited Holland often during their childhood.
A Man Moves West
Waxahachie came on Tamminga’s radar after seeing an ad for real estate in the newspaper. The ad was placed by the brother of a friend, and he was inspired to visit the US. He returned and sold his land in 1979, deciding to bring his young family to Texas and open a new dairy. The new dairy began with 400 cows, grew to 800 and by 2014 he had 1600 cows producing in Waxahachie.

Celebrating Mom Moming is hard, yall! Right? I have such a love and passion for parents doing this selfless job of raising little humans. With this in mind, i wanted to find a way to give back to the community by loving on a mom that desperately needed a makeover!
We put out the call on social media and got so many deserving mom nominations. It was so difficult to narrow it down, yet one letter stood out. In his nomination letter, her husband praised our recipient’s devotion to others but lamented that it left her little time for her own pursuits. She had attempted to decorate their bedroom with items she’d been given and had found at garage sales, but the project kept getting put on the back burner. Little wonder! She had been commuting more than an hour to her job as area director for a foster child agency, where she worked over 60 hours per week–and was on call 24/7!

My goal was to take this decor from dated and tired to light and dreamy. With a serene new gray on the walls, I reserved any “distress” for the mahogany nightstands, which had been refreshed with white chalk paint by Relic + Root. Then I visually extended the lamp height with some vintage white shutters. The shutters also add some texture, as do the wood and chippy wall art and tactile fabrics Every girl likes a little pink, but to keep it from being too feminine, I just used accents of pink and paired it with black in the pillows and rug. Bring nature in whenever you can! Fresh or faux flowers add color and life to any room. And botanical prints are everywhere this season! You can even download them from the internet and print them out.
Have you been to Board & Brush Waxahachie? She had the best time creating her “Mr. & Mrs.” sign that adds a personable touch to the room. Have you tried this trick to give your art more size and presence? Hang it inside a larger open frame (in this case an old window frame from Waxahachie Architectural Salvage)! I also tied in the black with the gingham platter. Yes, you can use plates for art anywhere in the house! The result was a room she adored and a much more lovely current space. The reveal was so much fun and she was thrilled with the outcome. It was a delight to contribute to this local project for someone who serves families in our community! Many thanks to the businesses who contributed to make it happen! It could not have been put together without the generous local businesses in Ellis County. We were fortunate enough to catch an interview with the famous Little Mermaid as she was passing through town to one of her parties in Waxahachie: What inspired you and your fellow royals to start attending parties on land?
Everyone deserves at least one dream to come true in their lifetime! Since my fellow royals and I have all experienced the most wonderful dreams come true, we thought that we should all get together and go make dreams come true for our friends in nearby kingdoms. Then, when we heard about Feeling Fanciful, and their mission to help feed hungry children and give them a better future, we knew we had to be a part of that. And birthday parties and special events seemed like just the way to do it!
What do you enjoy most about attending parties and meeting new people with your new-found legs?
It has to be seeing the smiles on so many faces! I love making new friends, and making dreams come true is one of my favorite things to do. Creating those magical memories that will last a lifetime is priceless to me!

Who are your fairytale friends?
Oh I’m friends with almost every fairytale creature everywhere, and we all get together frequently. The Snow Sisters host banquets and royal balls for all of us at their castle now that the gates are open up there. Beauty always manages to bring some sort of intriguing story for everyone, while Snow White brings her apple-free pie, and by the time Sleeping Beauty wakes up from her nap and Cinderella finds her slipper we all start twirling the night away. We have connections to pretty much every fairytale friend there is and they all love entertaining parties!
How can we invite you to our party?
Oh, this is the best part! So instead of sending a pigeon to try to reach us, our friends at Feeling Fanciful have made it super easy for you to invite us to your party. What other types of events do you do besides birthday parties? We love visiting large public events or private tea parties, too – or any other event with fanciful friends for that matter! We have created experiences for special events where we get
to sing and socialize and take portraits with everyone. I think we decided to call them Meet & Greets… But anyway, we have hosted several of those at different special events, and they’re the best!
What would you say to anyone who is considering inviting you to their party? We want to be part of your world, and we promise to give you a party that is fintastic with magic and memories! Every time you party with us, dreams also come true for a child in need. In shady spots, plant caladiums, begonias, coleus, impatiens (mildew-resistant types). Seeds of celosia, cosmos, marigold, morning glory, portulaca and zinnia can be sown directly in the beds. Keep seeded area moist until seeds germinate. Achimenes, cannas, dahlias and other summer flowering bulbs can be planted now. Establish new lawns before summer heat sets in. Sow seeded varieties of Bermudagrass early in the month; or sod Bermuda or St. Augustine grass. Water daily for first few weeks to develop a good root system.

Feed fruit trees, perennials, annuals, ground covers and vines with a lawn fertilizer (3-1-2 or 4-1-2 ratio). Fertilize tomatoes and most other vegetables every other week for productive and vigorous plants. Manually thin the fruit on peaches, pears, plums and apples to 5-6 inches apart early in the month. Prune spring-flowering shrubs and vines soon after flowering. Keep the natural shape of the plant in mind as you prune, and avoid excessive cutting except where necessary to control size. Deadhead roses and other reblooming plants. Allow foliage of daffodils and other springflowering bulbs to mature and yellow before removing.

Look for squash bugs in early morning. Destroy eggs found on underside of leaves by hand. Vegetable pests can often be controlled by mechanical, biological or organic means rather than by synthetic pesticides. Watch for bagworms on junipers and other narrow-leafed evergreens. Apply Bt (Bacillus thuringiensis) or general insecticide at first sign of larvae feeding. Remember that once the bag has formed, your only option is to manually pull them off. Buy and plant crape myrtles in bloom to be sure you are getting the desired color. Know the variety’s mature size to avoid future pruning. Ask for varieties that are resistant to powdery mildew. This is the best time to plant vinca (periwinkle) in full sun. Look for the variety ‘Cora’ since it is resistant to soil-borne diseases. Water with drip irrigation or soaker hose to keep water off foliage. Plant these tropical annuals for their flowers: tropical hibiscus, ‘Gold Star’ esperanza, mandevilla and Mexican heather. Use croton, bougainvillea and variegated tapioca for their foliage color. June is the time to select day lily varieties as they reach peak bloom.

Early July is the time to plant small and medium pumpkins for a Halloween harvest. Plant heat-tolerant annuals that have been acclimated to hot, sunny conditions. This includes moss rose, purslane, trailing lantana, purple fountain grass, firebush and copper plants. Lawn grasses can be planted this month, but you will need to water twice daily for short intervals to keep soil surface moist until the grass has established good roots, usually in two to three weeks.

Be a “plant health” detective! Plants respond in various ways to heat and drought stress. These symptoms are often misdiagnosed as an insect or disease problem. Correctly identify the problem before turning to a pesticide. Galls on leaves of oaks, hackberries and other trees are caused by many species of gall-forming insects, and are result of the female stinging the leaf tissues as she

lays her eggs. Galls are harmless since the insect doesn’t feed on plant tissues. Watch for lawn pests. Dry, light-colored areas in sunny parts of St. Augustine are probably the result of chinch bugs (small black insects with a white diamond on their backs). Apply Merit (imidacloprid) or other labeled insecticide. Grub worms are the culprits if the turf turns brown and easily comes up when pulled on. Treat with a granular insecticide. Rapid death of established landscape plants and orchard trees during the summer may signify the presence of cotton root rot, a soil-borne fungal disease common in our calcareous clay soils. Since there is no effective control, verification by the Plant Disease Diagnostic Lab at Texas A&M (http://plantclinic.tamu.edu) will help you know what plants can be used as replacements.

A Major Pain in the Joints

When you think of costly health conditions, what comes to mind? Heart disease? Diabetes? Obesity? Probably not arthritis. However, arthritis is among the most widespread, costliest – but often overlooked – conditions affecting Americans. According to a 2013 National Institutes of Health study, 55 million adults in the United States had physician-diagnosed arthritis costing an estimated $300 billion, including medical expenses and lost wages. Many people think of arthritis as pain in the joints that only old people get. That’s another misconception. “There are more than 100 types of joint diseases that affect men and women of all ages,” explains Sunny Patel, MD, a rheumatologist on the Baylor Scott & White Medical Center – Waxahachie medical staff. “Understanding the type of arthritis is a crucial step in preventing and treating long-term complications.” In broadest terms, there are two categories of arthritis: osteoarthritis and inflammatory arthritis. DIFFERENT PATHS, DIFFERENT PLACES The most common type of arthritis is osteoarthritis, which results from the breakdown of cartilage located at the ends of bones. This leads to uneven joint movement, loss of shock absorption and bone rubbing against bone. Inflammatory arthritis – such as rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis and
gout – are caused by the body’s own immune system attacking and inflaming joint tissue. Dr. Patel says that osteoarthritis mostly affects larger joints like the knees and hips and is usually acquired over the course of a lifetime, particularly in those who are obese, with prior trauma to the joint or have jobs requiring repetitive movements. Inflammatory arthritis more frequently attacks smaller joints like those in the hand, wrist or foot, and the causes behind it can be more complex. “Patients with inflammatory arthritis are often genetically predisposed individuals who are thought to have an environmental or infectious trigger activate the underlying disease process leading to joint destruction,” says Dr. Patel. Treating this form of arthritis often involves immunosuppressant medications. There are limited treatment options for osteoarthritis. For patients with severe cases, joint replacement may be an option. However, Dr. Patel says that physical and occupational therapy also can help patients with all forms of the disease. SUMMER LIVING During the summer months, people are often more active especially outdoors. Light to moderate activity is important for patients with arthritis. “Patients think – or maybe have even been told – that they shouldn’t do activity if they have arthritis. In fact, it’s the opposite,” advises Dr.

Patel. “Rheumatologists encourage patients with all types of arthritis to engage in activity and exercise.” Patients with arthritis shouldn’t exercise to the point of pain, but they should do what they can. Dr. Patel recommends stretching for 1015 minutes before exercising, staying hydrated to prevent cramps and, for those with arthritis, wearing shoe insoles or other support devices that help lessen stress on joints. “Pool exercises are great because you’re not putting a lot of load-bearing weight on your joints,” he adds. For patients who are overweight with – or at risk of – osteoarthritis, exercising also can be an important part of a weight-loss program. And it doesn’t take drastic weight loss to improve joint health. Weight loss of just five percent translates into a 20 percent improvement in function, making it a great investment in both joint and overall health. TIME TO SEE A SPECIALIST? Dr. Patel says that over-the-counter anti-inflammatory medications, rest and heating pads can help with the occasional joint pain nearly everyone experiences at some point. I have shared our story many times over the years, but as we celebrate the 25th year of owning the Doves Nest, I find myself reflecting on our incredible journey. My mom, Marilyn Goss, had a popular little shop next door to the Ellis County Museum, where she had sold her artwork and gifts for several years, when in 1992 my husband and I opened a little restaurant in the back of her store. We had a tiny kitchen with household appliances and found our tables were quickly filled everyday with customers that loved our lunches and many more waiting to be seated. We began preparing as much food as possible each morning with a sweet little lady who would tirelessly appear to bake homemade pies, cakes and cobblers. Wondering if we had taken on too much of a task, each month was beginning to get easier when one afternoon two ladies walked in and made us an offer that would ultimately change our lives. Built in 1913, the ladies had purchased the Moore Hardware store building one block south of the square. They opened a tea room alongside one of the first antique mall concepts in the area. Sadly, after a couple of years their partnership soured and they no longer wanted to be in business together. They asked us if we might be interested in buying their building. We certainly needed more space, but as a newly married couple we hadn’t yet bought our first home, much less a commercial property. We graciously thanked the ladies, but declined their offer. The next day one of their husbands came in asking if he were to co-sign a bank loan would we reconsider the offer. By the third day we found ourselves the new owners of a 12,000

square foot historic building. When I think back on the transaction it’s overwhelming. We didn’t even know this man. He was just trying to end a bad situation for his wife, but for us it was a blessed beginning.
The next few months were spent renovating the space that once housed the saddle and tack portion of the hardware store and what is still to this day the Doves Nest Restaurant. Twenty five years later the hand painted artwork on the ochre walls and the black and white tile floors is still the same. We went from serving about 30 people per day to feeding over 100 hungry mouths six days a week. Over the years we have had many famous people dine with us, but our favorite patrons are the ones who have raised their children on our chicken apricot salad and who are now bringing their own children, three generations later, to experience the Doves Nest. In the spring of 1998, we renovated the second floor loft and built a home that we have enjoyed and currently share with our Rottweiler, Elsa. Living above our business has made for an easy commute to work and Elsa even comes downstairs with me each day to help in my office. Along the way we have catered countless weddings, anniversaries, rehearsal dinners and corporate events. Our award winning cookbook is now in its fifth printing, having sold over 40,000 copies and winning the National Writers Digest grand prize award for selfpublished books. We have been written up in numerous publications and received the highest accolades in the Dallas Morning News, coined
the phrase, “It’s Worth Flying South” in the Fort Worth Star Telegram, and been voted by Texas Monthly Magazine as one of the top ten best small town restaurants in the state. I think what has made our business unique is the combination of our restaurant as well as our store, which has blossomed from predominately antiques into home accents, clothing, gifts and gourmet food items. It has made the Doves Nest a destination for tourists and a beloved experience for locals. I love buying and decorating the store each season, but would never be able to do it without the help of incredibly talented and loyal ladies, most of whom have worked with us for many years. It’s hard to believe that two Dallas city kids have been so blessed to not only have a business in Waxahachie for a quarter of a century, but to be a part of a wonderful community with such special people. We have so many memories and so much to be thankful for. You just never know what opportunities might come your way when you least expect it.
