Meet Dustin Leek, MD FOUNDER AND MEDICAL DIRECTOR
If you are suffering from pain, addiction, or both, it can be an overwhelming experience. At Eclipse Pain and Recovery, we understand that everybody experiences pain differently and there is no one-sizefits-all approach. Sir William Osler was credited for saying, “It is more important to know what kind of patient has the disease than what kind of a disease the patient has.” I can think of no better application than for someone with pain or an addiction. Do not put off feeling your best another day. It is time to live more with less pain. Let us take that next step together!

Growing in Grace...
Spring has always been my favorite season with its pleasant weather and nature’s evolving beauty. If you enjoy a flourishing garden, you are familiar with all that it takes ahead of time: planning, planting, cultivating, watering, hoping and waiting for vegetation or blooms. There’s always a lot going on below the surface to produce a healthy, pretty plant. With a year of publishing in my rear view mirror, it feels like a similar process. Lots of learning, change, teamwork and growth for each issue! I treasure the new friendships that have blossomed out of the relationships through this magazine...with readers, contributors, and advertising partners. My heart is full of gratitude and I appreciate the support more than you know!
I first fell in love with Ellis County back in 2017 when I started exploring the area in order to make a business decision. Cindy Burch had asked me to consider bringing Wild Grace into her Waxahachie gift store and restaurant, The Doves Nest. Wild Grace, a name to celebrate God’s wonderful, arms-wide-open, wild grace for each one of us, is my women’s pop-up boutique. I found a new home! In retrospect, it was such a good move to plant roots in an already well-loved, established business right in the heart of the county seat. This year, the Doves Nest celebrates 30 wonderful years, and I love our customers and enjoy the additional friendships which have grown out of being a small part of their business for the past seven years.
Enjoy our Spring One issue and may your life flourish like a well-watered garden of growth and purpose as you embrace His wild grace!

CHARLEY DUNCAN
Growth Through Giving Back with Charley Duncan
In the heart of Ellis County, Texas, Charley Duncan stands as a beacon of community cultivation through his many businesses, aptly named: A Oasis. His journey to entrepreneurship and dedication to enhancing outdoor spaces for families reflect not only his passion for the outdoors, but also his commitment to serving his community.
A Oasis Pools & Outdoor Living didn’t emerge overnight. It sprouted from humble beginnings as A Oasis Landscaping & Irrigation back in 2014. Duncan’s initial venture into landscaping was driven by a desire to transform outdoor spaces into havens of beauty and functionality. However, he soon realized that to offer a complete outdoor living experience, the missing piece of the puzzle was a pool. This realization marked the birth of A Oasis Pools & Outdoor Living, expanding his services to include the installation and maintenance of pools alongside landscaping.
For Duncan, the motivation behind his business is about enriching the lives of families by creating spaces where they can forge lasting memories. He believes that the environments they craft have a profound impact on families, and this belief is reflected in every project undertaken by his one-of-a-kind team. Their commitment to values such as family, faith, honor, integrity, and servant leadership is evident in every interaction with clients.
In 2023, A Oasis Pools & Outdoor Living was named a Top 50 Pool Builder by the Pool & Hot Tub Alliance, a testament to the company’s commitment to excellence and innovation in the industry. They also won three excellence awards at the International Pool Spa & Patio Expo. The trifecta of outdoor solutions offered by the A Oasis name, also includes A Oasis Pool Service, the maintenance division dedicated to helping people extend the life of their pools.
Most of all, a unique factor that sets A Oasis apart from other builders is that all facets of your project, from design to construction, fall under the AO umbrella. This internal synergy ensures consistency and excellence throughout, providing our customers with peace of mind knowing their outdoor oasis is crafted by a dedicated team under one roof.
Duncan’s dedication doesn’t end with his business endeavors. He is deeply invested in giving back to his community. The A Oasis family of companies proudly supports various local initiatives and organizations, including Ellis County Children’s Advocacy Center, Multiple FFAs, WISD Education Foundation, Maypearl Booster Club, Red Oak Firefighter’s Association, Waxahachie Junior Service League, etc.
“I have a lot of family - blood and created - and they’re all in the business,” Duncan shares. “The drive of my family would be my kids, raising them up in that ‘go-giver’ mindset.” Charley and his children traveled with The Avenue Church to Guatemala.
Recently, in a move to streamline operations and enhance customer service, A Oasis Pools & Outdoor Living brought its headquarters to Charley’s land in Waxahachie. Here, all three companies—A Oasis Pools & Outdoor Living, A Oasis Landscaping & Irrigation, and A Oasis Pool Service—work synergistically to provide comprehensive outdoor solutions to customers and the community.
“Work willingly at whatever you do, as though you were working for the Lord rather than for people. Remember that the Lord will give you an inheritance as your reward, and that the Master you are serving is Christ.”

Spring is almost here...thank You, Lord!
Now is the time to start planning ahead for your garden, although I somehow feel we’re still very much in between seasons. We are looking forward to spring and the anticipation of the trees and plants bringing their early color. If you can’t wait to plant outside, the addition of some indoor plants will not disappoint.
LOTS OF SUNSHINE Having a sunny window is a blessing for your indoor plants and can serve as a beautiful focal point to give your home just the right touch. I don’t know about you, but a healthy green ivy can really compliment any spot in your home. I have one on my island and love the color and flowing runners. Indoor plants at this time of year can really brighten your home and bring a sense of beauty and add “life” to any space.
WATCH OUT FOR COLD SNAPS
The weather was so nice in December, my plants seemed to love it outside a little longer than usual. We finally had that one bad cold spell that Texas usually gets. When it hit a few weeks ago, my husband and I brought the plants in and found new spaces for them. I’m loving the green that is spread throughout our home. My philodendron has found a place to thrive in an old antique dry sink. I love it there so much; I plan on keeping it inside and adding two more for my front porch in the spring. I enjoy having different textures of lush green leaves. Our cactus even found its way into a fun old crock in my hallway. He makes a really nice design statement!
ADD SOME GREEN If you find yourself wanting or needing a little pick-me-up in your home, check out The Greenery in Waxahachie for an indoor ivy or a tender outside plant that will dazzle a great spot in or outside your home. We are a unique home and garden center with a wide variety of landscaping options, containers, and all types of items for indoor and outdoor living. Enjoy your decorative plants, but also don’t forget to get your onions and potatoes planted now.
Hope to see all garden enthusiasts or those whose interest in plants has been piqued at the Ellis County Lawn and Garden Expo!
Blessings from The Greenery, Deb

I love this time of year because it’s the season to prepare the soil for the growth that I would like to see in my life in the months ahead. It’s an opportunity for a fresh start, a do over, or do better. For me, I would like to do better at finding balance in my life. Several years ago, God gave me a vision for a ministry, which led me to start CORE Women. CORE Women is based on four pillars: mind, body, spirit, and community. CORE stands for Cultivating Open Real Empowered Women. He showed me that, like our physical cores need to be strong to support our bodies, women need to be strong to support their families, friends, and community. Throughout my life, I have tried to find balance in these areas and have done okay at different times, but usually find I am stronger in one area than another. This year, I invite you to join me on my journey of finding balance, as I take a deeper dive into the following areas to ensure each one is getting the attention it deserves.”
Core 24 Introduction t o
BY JULIE SIDES FARRAR
I believe these four areas – mind, body, spirit, and community are the combination of elements needed to produce the rich soil for balance in our lives.
MIND- It’s important for us to feed our minds. How does the saying go? If you don’t use it, you’ll lose it. Well, I don’t want to lose it! Whatever interests you, learn more about it. Whatever the topic is, learn and grow.
BODY- Who doesn’t look in the mirror and see areas you would like to improve, or go to the doctor and find there are areas you need to improve? If you can’t relate, I’m giving you a (slightly sarcastic) high five. The truth is most of us could do better in this area.
SPIRIT- Although I have listed this third, it’s the most important one. What I’m referring to when I say “spirit,” is my spiritual walk. Of all the pillars, if I don’t give this area of my life the amount of time and attention it needs, I am not my best self. With our busy schedules, it’s easy to let this area fall behind. If you find you are feeling stressed or just “off,” pause and consider if this might be an area that needs watering.
COMMUNITY- Sometimes I get caught up in my own world and need to stop and shift the focus off myself to others. It’s easy to get distracted or weighed down with life. You might be surprised how taking the focus off yourself and giving back to the community can reset your perspective and bring you joy.
I’ve heard it said that balance, as it relates to life, is impossible. Is it? I believe these four areas – mind, body, spirit, and community are the combination of elements needed to produce the rich soil for balance in our lives. I hope you will join me on this journey, and I encourage you to be kind to yourself and thankful, each day, for another chance to do better because that means you’re still alive!

THE Dessert Spot
STORY & PHOTOS PROVIDED BY ELMO & THEA HARRIS
Elmo and Thea Harris, the owners of the Dessert Spot opened the sweet corner in downtown Waxahachie in 2018. Both Elmo and Thea grew up in Dallas and have been married over thirty years. They have one son, Jordan, a graduate of Tuskegee University with a degree in Chemical Engineering. Becoming entrepreneurs was something that they both had dreamed of, and after Jordan graduated from college, they made the bold move to exit their corporate careers.
Early in 2018, on a Sunday drive, they discovered the Rogers Hotel in downtown Waxahachie. If asked, Thea would tell you that the Holy Spirit led them to Waxahachie. They immediately envisioned the little spot at the corner of Main and College as a place to fellowship. The relaxed atmosphere of the Dessert Spot was created as a result of mimicking a space similar to the family gatherings they enjoy. They also wanted to create a space where customers could gather, sit, converse and most importantly enjoy great desserts while enjoying time with family and friends. They have become well-known for the large cookies and brownies. Many of the recipes have come from family cookbooks. Elmo and Thea handle the day-to-day operations of the business, while Jordan works to streamline processes and create efficiencies.
The Dessert Spot is proud of its reputation as a place where customers can get an exceptional dessert while enjoying time with friends and family. They were also awarded "Small Business of the Year" in 2022 by the Waxahachie Chamber of Commerce. They are grateful for the customers and friendships which bring them so much joy, and look forward to continuing to serve and support the community!

STORY
& PHOTOS BY JASON WILSON, MEAT THERAPY
While some people focus on spring cleaning and others are well on their way to conquering (or breaking) their New Year’s resolutions, for me the Spring season represents freshness. Fresh applies to what has not lost its qualities of newness: a fresh start, fresh air, fresh ingredients, fresh food.
I recently had the opportunity to experience these aspects of freshness while bay fishing with Traeger and Journey South Outfitters located on the Gulf Coast just south of New Orleans. After a fun day out on the water, I was tasked with making a dish using Cobia belly. If you are anything like me, you are currently googling “what is Cobia belly” and “what to make out of Cobia belly.” The Texan in me landed on smoked cobia fish belly tacos topped with a fresh smoked pineapple and green chili salsa…or is it relish?
Help me solve the great debate and give me the right to say “I told you so” to the Mrs. Is it relish or is it salsa? Diced smoked pineapple and tomatoes, chopped bell pepper and onion, cilantro, jalapeno, hatch green chilis…sounds like the makings of a salsa to me. Salsa is a sauce that typically consists of tomatoes, onions and chiles, while relishes are cooked or pickled chopped fruits or vegetables that are mixed in a sauce. There ain’t no dang vinegar or pickled anything in this recipe, so I say SALSA!
At the risk of sounding Forrest Gump-ish, you can use this salsa on everything. From tacos to seafood, flank steak to chips and dip or garnish atop anything you are wanting to freshen up or make look healthy. Even though this has now been proven to be a salsa (told you so!), ‘relish’ the flavor of this bright fresh condiment to enhance your next dish.
INGREDIENTS:
Half of a pineapple or pineapple spears
1 red or orange bell pepper (chopped)
1/2 cup red onion (chopped)
1/4 cup cilantro (chopped)
1 jalapeño deveined and deseeded (diced)
1 green chile diced (optional)
1 tbsp avocado oil
1/2 tbsp Meat Church Texas Sugar
1/4 cup diced tomatoes
DIRECTIONS:
Get smoker going at 225°
Quarter 1/2 onion and separate. Quarter bell pepper. Oil pineapple, onion, bell pepper, & jalapeño, and place on smoker.
Smoke until tender, about 30-40 minutes. Pull and let cool. Combine all ingredients and mix well. Serve immediately or put in the fridge to chill and serve later.

The Wander Edit
Relaxation R E C A P
began a couple of years ago with the purchase of a cowhide and leather travel bag, and the idea of celebrating the art of the weekend getaway by curating a destination road trip within a comfortable driving distance to share with our readers. I've chosen accommodations in all different price ranges, but sometimes it's fun to budget a little extra to staycation at extraordinary properties all the while being immersed in the history and local color of places not too far from home. The focus has been on shorter trips, living more intentionally and in the moment, and enjoying the journey! People often ask which is my favorite. How could I ever choose a favorite when each of these twelve properties are quite exceptional in their own right? I do a lot of research ahead of time to ensure that I feature the best in uniqueness, comfort, cleanliness, decor, management or ownership, property grounds, hospitality, and amenities. Each one of these experiences...the sights, scents, flavors, and especially the rich conversations with the people I have met, have become a part of my travel-loving soul. Planning a few getaways or staycations for this year? Keep a bag packed (still loving mine!) and consider choosing from The Wander Edit's list of featured properties...I have not been disappointed and I'm so grateful for the invitations to be their guest!

@HOTEL_LUCY@TEXICAN.COURT @THEWHITEHOUSEONTHEHILL @THEFRENCHIEROUNDTOP
Hotel Lucy (Granbury, TX)
Within walking distance from the vibrant Granbury square, you'll find a magnificent boutique hotel. Hotel Lucy, in all of her opulent grandeur, sprawls gracefully over three meticulously developed acres on Pearl Street, directly across from Granbury City Beach Park. The hotel grounds include a grouping of several well-designed and visually cohesive buildings with various names, but all have surprisingly different interiors and rooms with incredible individual style and themes. "Hey Sugar" was my very plush/very pink suite with its high-end finishes, tactile fabrics and textures, a luxurious bathroom, and glamour in every detail. There is an impressive common area dream kitchen with an adjacent elegant bar, an outdoor fireplace, an event center, and a beautiful pool. Hotel Lucy has a luxe boutique right next door called The Pearl. With so many shops and restaurants, Granbury is bustling on the weekends. Don't miss the Granbury Wine Walk in late April. Get your tickets online ahead of time and indulge yourself with a room at hotel-lucy.com.
Texican Court (Las Colinas, TX) The Valencia Hotel Group has perfected the resurgence of the motor court. Historically, the motor court was typically a one-off motel with an interesting name, a fun theme, "parking lot to room" access, and built around a pool. Think Route 66 charm. The Texican Court is warm and inviting with its Spanish mission-style architecture, pink doors and minimalistic southwest landscaping, combined with the nostalgic ambiance of a 152-room, three-story motor court. The rooms are cleverly retro inside...relaxed luxury and also fairly affordable and fun for either a family adventure or a romantic getaway. It's located in Las Colinas across from the Irving Convention Center and Toyota Music Factory. Two Mules Cantina's menu boasts fresh flavors and chef-prepared cuisine. Nestle into the cozy area across from the bar - perfect for conversations and enjoying live entertainment on the weekends. There is a mission-style chapel and area for special events and a boardroom for corporate meetings. Relax by the circular pool, outdoor fireplaces, cowboy cauldrons (pick up your s'mores supplies at the front desk), plenty of picnic tables and lounging chairs. Explore authentic Americana at texicancourt.com.
The Frenchie (Round Top, TX) Ooh la la...the bold Parisienne style of each uniquely decorated room, the array of colors, the swanky pool area, the professionalism of the staff, and the easy-going tranquility will have you saying "Oui oui" to staying at The Frenchie! This property is pure eye candy! The buildings range from 1800's farmhouse to mid-century modern, to highly contemporary. I was able to see all of the rooms in person and was on "inspiration overload" after viewing dozens of gorgeous chandeliers, vintage mirrors, plush furnishings, decorative tiles and all types of tubs and showers. The atmosphere is a mix and mingling of eclectic excitement. I chose Room 11, one of the poolside bungalows with the coolest oversized round bathtub. I highly recommend visiting Round Top when the internationally attended antique shows aren't going on so you can relax and experience the quaintness of this community. It's a decorator's dream looking online at all the various rooms and common areas around The Frenchie Boutique Hotel at roundtoptx.com.
The White House on the Hill
(Burton, TX) Sunsets chase you at The White House on the Hill! This hidden country gem is a 19-acre property about halfway between Austin and Houston, and just minutes from Round Top and Burton. Fields of wildflowers flourish in the spring all over the compound which consists of a main house, a white chapel guest house, an event barn with guest rooms, a catering kitchen, an art barn, a pond and a 400-vine vineyard. Linda O'Neal and her husband, Rob Rosenbaum are the dynamic duo whose dream became a reality in developing this special piece of property in Washington County. All of the architectural elements, elegant vintage furnishings and lighting, and luxe linens were hand-picked by the couple in designing this peaceful, romantic haven. The concept which drew me to the property originally was their art barn. On Tuesday mornings, locals and overnight guests are welcome to stop by to create, collaborate, and learn alongside others or bring their own specific project to work on. The spacious barn has large glass roll-up doors and a view of the property's tranquil pond. The art barn is where art is made and friendships are formed! It's "business as usual" until the right buyer comes along, but this treasure has just been listed. Want to be the new discerning owner? Search 5025 Wickel Road on roundtoprealestate.com. Refresh, relax, renew or book your next special event at thewhitehouseonthehill.com.
The George (College Station, TX) Nestled in the heart of College Station and in the center of Century Square, you'll find The George™; a luxury four-star boutique hotel. Contemporary hipness is well-blended with Texas history throughout the 162-room property. Ordinary found objects have made their way into fascinating art exhibits. One amazing example is the Texas Flag Book Wall, installed in the entry to the lobby as a powerfully dramatic display. Century Square is full of shopping and dining opportunities. Downtown Bryan is just minutes away, and the First Friday monthly activities fill the streets with live music and fun! By George, book a getaway at thegeorgetexas.com!
Poplar Place Tx (Fredericksburg, TX) It's difficult to choose a rental on this corner property in Fredericksburg because they're all so tricked out with different themes. I've now stayed in the "Mod" house twice because I love the decor and design details! You'll need at least a couple of days to hit all of the local shops, wineries, and restaurants. Watch online for wine and wildflower festivals! If you're looking to be about eight blocks from Main Street, try poplarplacetx.com.
Rosewood Mansion on Turtle Creek (Dallas, TX) You'll be welcomed by an impeccable staff and surrounded by pure luxury at this century old Texas mansion. Sitting majestically on a hill in a neighborhood in Dallas, Rosewood Mansion not only has pristine accommodations, but also one of the finest restaurants and most iconic bars in North Texas. Before your stay, speak with the hotel concierge and inquire about the most current and suggested excursions. Feeling fancy? Relax in style at rosewoodhotels.com.
Q&C Hotel (New Orleans, LA) Oh how I fell unexpectedly in love with New Orleans! My five days at the centrally located Q&C included home tours, shopping, fresh seafood, cajun flavors, and a lot of jazz! New Orleans is an example of where you will want to immerse yourself in the history and local color. Q&C Hotel & Bar is positioned in the heart of the city, and proves to be a convenient launch pad for sightseeing. Ready to explore all that The Crescent City has to offer? Start your journey from qandc.com.
Hall Arts Hotel
(Dallas, TX) The Dallas Arts District is a playground for all things creative! The Hall Arts Hotel is the first hotel in the district and is masterfully designed with show-stopping contemporary art collections and high-tech accommodations. DISCOVER THE
OF HOME joy
renovating in phases...
After living in their home for several years, my clients reached out wanting to add color, depth, and style to their home. When building eight years ago, they chose a neutral palette with fresh white for trim and cabinetry, a soft beige for walls, and beautiful hardwoods. A great foundation to build upon! However, as they have lived in the home, they found themselves craving color and depth – and that’s what inspired them to give me a call. We focused first on the kitchen and office – which are now complete and featured within this article. We have now moved on to the living room and side baths throughout the home. I think there is an assumption with hiring a designer that a client’s budget and time should be unlimited – however, I often work in phases throughout a clients home. I focus first on priority areas, and then move to additional spaces. Home design can be a collaboration and relationship over time, taking steps with each new phase to design and style the home of my clients' dreams. Let’s take a look at this beautiful home's newly renovated office and kitchen!

the office...
The office prior to the renovation was a space that wasn’t fully utilized – a small area with a desk and chair, but mostly being used for storage and exercise equipment and more of a landing zone (can’t we all relate!) of sorts. With the husband primarily splitting his time between working from home or traveling for work, he needed a dedicated office space. An office in my opinion needs to be a space that inspires focus and calm, while being functional and beautiful. An office that is polished and organized inspires great ideas and productivity. I wanted to be sure to add a large custom built-in that spanned the length and height of the focal wall. We used color drenching in the space with a deep green hue – Sherwin Williams Ripe Olive. We added bead board on the back panel of the cabinetry for added interest. Many assume bead board tends to lean more toward a traditional or country style – however when paired with a modern moody hue, it’s the perfect balance of classic and modern day. We tore up the existing carpet, and polished the existing concrete slab finishing it with a matte sheen. As far as styling the space, I went with a masculine approach throughout. A plush plaid area rug set a great foundation for the space. The cognac leather is a classic leather color for the office and side chair – and gives a nice pop against the deep green. An airy and unique matte black light fixture was perfect for the space to avoid obstructing the view of the built-in to the ceiling. We accessorized with unique pieces such as a vintage marble chess board sourced from Round Top, distressed pottery, and grapewood branches to bring in warmth and movement. Every accessory and detail were thoughtfully picked specific to this client. The "before and after" are "night and day!" I have enjoyed hearing how my client is utilizing and enjoying his office like never before!

the kitchen...
The kitchen area before the renovation was light and bright with fresh white cabinetry, and a light neutral quartz. The backsplash was a charcoal gray, and the cabinet hardware was too small for the scale of the cabinetry. To be mindful of budget, we left the lower cabinetry untouched throughout the space – but extended the upper cabinetry to the ten foot ceilings. Extending the cabinetry added increased storage, and really drew the eye up to make the space feel larger. The cabinetry before was a raised-panel style, and updating to shaker style doors and drawer fronts gave it a timeless look that will last for decades. For countertops, we chose a beautiful natural quartzite with depth and movement. The mixture of taupe/brown and white tones was the perfect complement to the crisp white cabinetry and trim already existing throughout the home. We brought the quartzite up as a backsplash to add to the ratio of deeper tones versus white. We added a quartzite shelf over the cooktop as a unique display. Beautiful polished nickel hardware adorns the cabinetry for a glint of added personality. Woven barstools, art, fresh flowers, and accessories really completed the space. Now her kitchen is ready for entertainment and everyday use! We solved every problem aesthetically, while adding several new functional improvements to the space. I’ve loved hearing how they are enjoying their new beautiful kitchen!

STORY
Hi! I'm Alli K!
Q: With over 85k followers on Instagram, you are one of the most fun, followed and well-loved Dallas (and far beyond!) mural artists and illustration authors. Tell us a little about yourself and your brand!
A: I'm based in Dallas, TX, and am the founder behind Alli K Design. I create custom murals for businesses around the US and have collaborated with brands and artists such as LuluLemon, Kacey Musgraves, and Kendra Scott. Alli K Design was a happy accident. What started as a side hustle during my free time while I was interviewing for corporate jobs, Alli K Design ended up turning into my full-time job.
In my head the plan was: go to college, get married, work a nine-to-five job, have babies, and become a stay-at-home mom. It’s what I saw my mom do and all of my friends' moms do. I thought that they had the life, but that "high" — the high of making something with my own two hands and someone wanting to pay money for it — got to me. I could set the rules and I could sleep in and stay up as late as I wanted. I bought craft supplies, not just because I wanted to, but because I needed to. I couldn’t shake it. I remember bargaining with my husband to let me make this my job. My husband was a by-the-books guy — the “what about insurance and 401k” kind of guy. He saw it more of a hobby instead of a job, but gave me six months to show him I could bring in more money than I was spending on art supplies — if I couldn’t, I needed a nine-to-five. Well, challenge accepted. That six months has turned into ten years and Landon has retired from by-the-books thinking and the corporate world and works with me!
Q: In some of your reels we see your husband, Landon, painting alongside you. How and when did you meet and expound a bit more on the process of the two of you moving into the art world?
A: Landon and I have known each other over half our lives at this point. We met at church camp the summer going into high school, started dating when we were 14, and have been together ever since! We have both always been artistic. I sometimes joke around and tell people that Landon is actually the better artist since he was in AP Art in high school. During high school neither of us saw art as a viable profession/business, so Landon went down the “corporate” path and worked for Amazon as a Project Manager for seven years. Eventually he started to get burned out from the corporate grind and saw me enjoying every day while growing my business. One day he came home and said he was quitting Amazon to come work for me. I really thought he was joking, but five weeks later he joined Alli K Design.
Q: I love the fact that you mentor and encourage others to create and seem eager to offer very specific instructions and inspiration. How many illustration books have you written?
A: Same! Mentoring, helping others, and being an example to the younger generations is what fuels my fire! I have 12 books total and am currently working on four more! I’m always brainstorming book ideas so I’m sure I won't be stopping anytime soon.

Q: Your latest book, Love in Bloom, was just released a few weeks ago...and wow...you certainly know how to throw a celebration party! Swag bags, live music, beautiful food and florals, an art table full of Alli K coloring pages, a bracelet and a coffee bar, a sticker "gumball" machine, a pop-up shop with your merch....and plenty of photo ops. So many smiles and happy vibes! What inspired this book and where can we find it?
A: Hosting and giving gifts is my love language! LoveinBloom is a coloring book full of love and I hope that people can feel the love throughout the pages! Signed copies are available on my website (allikdesign.com) or unsigned copies at Amazon or Barnes & Noble!
Q: Love watching your reels and you seem to be having fun in all that you do! Is it scary up on those scaffolds? Share a little about one of your most challenging and yet favorite projects.
A: Painting from swing stages or 40ft boom lifts can be a bit challenging yet thrilling. A six-story mural (this issue's cover art) in LA required us to use a swing stage (think window washer basket) that is held up by a single, small wire cable in the middle. It was a balancing act the entire time since my husband, who is twice my size, was in the basket with me. Any step left or right would cause the basket to lean so we had to call out any big movements so the other person could act as a counter balance. This was one of my favorite projects not only because of how it turned out, but because it forced me to do something outside of my comfort zone.
Q: Your work and your wardrobe have a cohesive vibe. Tell us about your unmistakable personal style!
A: Can you believe that I used to wear hot pink and glittered nails?! Working by yourself, you are alone a lot. I didn’t have to pick the right outfits to fit in with what the cool kids were wearing. I found out who I was as a person and with that, found my artistic style: minimal black and white. A lot of it also comes from having decision paralysis. I am making allllll of the decisions in Alli K Design, so when it comes to my wardrobe, wearing all black is a no brainer. Black is also my favorite color so that helps in the obsession!
Q: You seem to be continually blooming as beautifully as your work! Tell us how you've grown as a Creative.
A: My dad has always told me, don't worry about creating something better just as long as it is new. I know it sounds silly but the minute he said that the pressure was lifted. I'm able to just create without putting too much pressure on myself to make something perfect/better and I think that has been a huge factor on how I have grown. My Dad is full of wisdom! I am excited to re-launch our podcast in the summer. We'll record every Saturday so we can share more wisdom nuggets to whoever wants to listen. It is called Breakfast With Sis!
Q:
It's easy to spot your work in Texas, especially around Dallas, but how many states are your murals currently in? What are some of your bigger projects in the near future? We've heard there's a secret you've been keeping...is it out...and can you share?
A: I currently have murals in eight states with the goal to add a new state each year! In March I will be painting the entire month in Florida for the outside of a hotel! I can't go into too many details just yet, but it's going to be so much fun and I will be sharing the entire process on my Instagram, so please join me for the creative adventure!

the COUNTRY FIELD WITH
Janie Fricke
Forever Grateful
Nearly a half century ago, I moved to north central Texas to grow new roots, but a big part of my heart still lives in Indiana where I originally grew up on a 400-acre farm, and also in Tennessee where my music really started taking off. All I ever wanted to do was sing! My father taught me to play guitar, and I sang at church where my mother played piano. I sang wherever and whenever I could, and that took me to Memphis. Although my degree is in elementary ed, I chose the path of a musical career. My life has been an exciting adventure full of music performances, many recordings (including 18 number one hits), and all kinds of remarkable events for which I am blessed and forever grateful.
Career Highlights
There have been so many fun highlights when I look back over my career. I'm humbled to have been nominated or won about fourteen awards including some at the CMA and the ACM. I've had the honor to sing before four presidents: President Gerald Ford, President Ronald Reagan, President George H.W. Bush, and President George W. Bush. I had the opportunity to attend a state dinner at The White House, and my voice was sent to the moon on Apollo 12 when I was a jingle singer! I've had the privilege of singing on both Elvis' and Charlie Rich's albums after their passing. There's been so many incredible opportunities that have come my way. I figured that if I could sing...I could surely act, so I even accepted some television roles including "Ginny," a bank robber, in Season 7 Episode 1 of "The Dukes of Hazzard." If you've watched the recent Netflix documentary, "The Greatest Night in Pop"...a behind-the-scenes peek into the legendary 1985 "We Are The World" gathering...you might have caught a little glimpse of me presenting an award to Prince in 1985. These are cherished memories that make me wonder if it has all been a dream!
Texas is Home
No matter where I go or who I get to meet or what crowd I am entertaining, when I return from tour and travels, I am so content to spend down time with my husband, my local friends, and our church. My husband, Jeff Steele, is also my bandleader and drummer. When we're not on the road, we love tending to our animals. I'm still very much
a farm girl! We have twenty chickens and I sell the eggs to local markets! We always enjoy shopping at familiar stores and dining at our favorite restaurants. North central Texas is definitely now "home"...where I relax and where I thrive.
The Texas Theater Event
It's so special to once again play the recently restored Texas Theater on the square in downtown Waxahachie. This historic treasure has been reborn with its incredible sound system, spectacular lighting, beautiful decor, and also not far from our home. After all these years in the music industry, I have never lost the enthusiasm and pure heart and love of music from my childhood days when all I wanted to do was sing. I hope to see you in the audience on May 18, 2024 or sometime soon!
Much Love, Janie

THE VIBRANT WORLD of orchestral music
An integrated program of orchestral works written by diverse composers, the FWSO “Women of Texas” program taught students the stories of notable women in Texas history. This unique performance wove music and history together with spellbinding classical pieces all the while taking students on a captivating journey through the symphony’s diverse family of instruments. "A love for music takes root early," says WSA President Melissa Baird Chapman. "For many of these students, these concerts are their first exposure to the magic of a live orchestra. We love to witness their wonder as they tap their toes, sway in their seats, and connect with the power of music."
The Shirley Singleton Memorial Children’s Concert honors the memory of Shirley Singleton, a dedicated and active mother in Waxahachie who loved music, children, and supporting the community. Tailored specifically for students, this enriching experience promises to spark curiosity, cultivate appreciation for the arts, and encourage discovery of musical aspirations.
This cherished initiative event, co-sponsored by Citizens National Bank of Texas and the Texas Commission on the Arts, marks a milestone in their commitment to education and outreach. “With the enormous growth Ellis County has seen over the last several years our schools have seen significant growth as well. In addition to the two concerts we traditionally hold in Waxahachie, this year for the first time WSA held a third concert solely for Midlothian ISD,” said Chapman. “We are so thankful to Citizens National Bank of Texas for their increased sponsorship which allowed us to expand our concert schedule.” In addition to Waxahachie and Midlothian ISD fifth-graders, students from Avalon ISD, Milford ISD, Red Oak ISD and Southern Star Home School Program also attended. A pillar of our student-focused initiatives since 1985, the continued success of our Children’s Concerts, this vital program rests on the result of the unwavering support of our sponsors like these, a pillar of our student focused initiatives since 2015. This year, their generous sponsorship has blossomed, enabling the expansion to a third concert and allowed WSA to amplifying the reach of music and magic to even more young minds in Ellis County.

The WSA was founded in 1976 by a group of passionate music lovers who wanted to enrich the cultural life of their community.
ABOUT THE FORT WORTH SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA
The Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra, a beacon of artistic excellence and innovation, stands as a national leader in the orchestral landscape. Under the visionary leadership of Music Director Robert Spano, the Orchestra enthralls audiences with a dynamic season encompassing classical masterpieces, pops favorites, and engaging family concerts. 30 years!!!
STORY BY CINDY BURCH
I have shared our story many times over the years, but as we celebrate the 30th year of owning the Doves Nest, I find myself once again reflecting on our incredible journey.
Back in 1986, my mother, Marilyn Goss, opened an art gallery and gift shop in the Marchman’s building on Waxahachie’s town square. She was nervous to take on a lease and fill the space with her art which always included a scripture verse and white dove, but not long after opening, an elderly lady with beautiful white hair wearing a lavender dress and a strand of pearls seemed to appear out of nowhere. As she admired my mother’s artwork she said: “The Lord is in your work and He has brought you here.” Astonished, my mother asked her how she could possibly know such a thing and the lady smiled and said “I just needed to tell you that." My mother never saw that sweet lady again and felt God had sent her an angel to give her the assurance she was exactly where she was meant to be.
After five years of being in the Marchman’s building we moved. It was a larger space next door to the Ellis County Museum, where in 1992 my husband and I had opened a little restaurant in the back of the store. We had a tiny kitchen with household appliances and found our tables were quickly filled everyday with customers that loved our lunches and many more waited to be seated. We began preparing as much food as possible each morning with a sweet little lady who would tirelessly appear to bake homemade pies, cakes and cobblers. Wondering if we had taken on too much of a task, each month was beginning
to get easier. Then in 1994, two ladies walked in and made us an offer that would ultimately change our lives.
The ladies had purchased the Moore Hardware store building one block south of the square. They opened a tea room alongside one of the first antique mall concepts in the area, but they were ready to sell and asked us if we might be interested in buying their building. We certainly needed more space, but as a newly married couple we hadn’t yet bought our first home, much less a commercial property. We graciously thanked the ladies, but declined their offer. The next day one of their husbands came in asking if he were to co-sign a bank loan, would we reconsider the offer. By the third day we found ourselves as the new owners of a 12,000 square foot historic building. When I think back on the transaction it is overwhelming. We didn’t even know this man. He was just trying to end a bad situation for his wife, but for us it was a blessed beginning.
My mother decided to retire and the next few months were spent renovating the space that once housed the saddle and tack portion of the hardware store and what is still to this day the Doves Nest Restaurant. Thirty years later, the hand-painted artwork on the ochre walls and the black and white tile floors is still the same. We went from serving about 30 people per day to feeding over 100 hungry mouths six days a week. Over the years we have had many famous people dine with us, but our favorite patrons are the ones who have raised their children on our chicken apricot salad and who are now bringing their own children,
three generations later, to experience the Doves Nest.
Throughout the years, we have loved catering a countless number of weddings, anniversaries, rehearsal dinners and corporate events. Our award-winning cookbook is now in its fifth printing, having sold over 40,000 copies. It also won the National Writers Digest grand prize award for self-published books. We have been written up in numerous publications and received the highest accolades in the Dallas Morning News, coined the phrase, "It’s Worth Flying South” in the Fort Worth Star Telegram, and have been voted as one one of the top ten best small town restaurants in the state by Texas Monthly Magazine.
I think what has made our business unique is the combination of our restaurant as well as our store, which has blossomed from predominantly antiques into home accents, clothing, gifts and gourmet food items. It has made the Doves Nest a destination for tourists and a beloved experience for locals. I love buying and decorating the store each season, but would never be able to do it without the help of incredibly talented and loyal ladies, most of whom have worked with us for many years.
It’s hard to believe that two Dallas city kids have been so blessed to not only have a business in Waxahachie for thirty years, but to be a part of a wonderful community with such special people. We have so many memories and so much to be thankful for. You just never know what opportunities might come your way when you least expect it
