Spirit of the West...
I’ve been dressing the part from head-to-toe for years, so people often assume that I ride horses. The truth is...I’m only a wannabe cowgirl...or what I call a “Dimestore Cowgirl.” I love horses and all things western...the hacienda western theme is very much a part of some of my living spaces and my closet. However, I never learned to ride a horse and it’s probably related to a childhood experience. When I was a young girl, I visited a dude ranch, got on a horse and went on a trail ride for the first time. Instead of relaxing in the saddle and confidently leading my horse to simply follow the Trail Boss, I became uneasy and apprehensive which allowed my horse to lead. It suddenly bolted away from the group! I was completely panicked, hung on tightly, and ducked to miss low branches as it raced through the woods. The horse eventually stopped in a pasture and started grazing. I was relieved, but had no idea what to do but wait for the guide to find and rescue me to get me back on the trail with the others. A total Greenhorn, I know it wasn’t the well-trained horse...it was me! When the guide finally appeared, I was sooo happy to be found. Sometimes life feels a little like that. I’ll be on the right trail and doing just fine, and every now and then I somehow get inside my head, possibly panic or make a poor decision, and the next thing I know, I’m a runaway and off the designated path! When I find myself “out in a pasture somewhere,” my Divine Guide...my “Trail Boss” safely brings me right back to where I am supposed to be... following Him!

Standy Buchholz here...the owner of The Boho Blonde Salon! This Buda, TX native-turned-Waxahachian, likes to call myself a transplant to Ellis County. I am so excited to be sharing this little dream of mine with y'all. I am first and foremost a farmer/rancher wife and mother to two little feral ranch girls as well as a business owner. I have been a cosmetologist for ten years and have loved every single opportunity the beauty industry has given me. I am also a little eccentric! My momma calls me "an old soul," which I don't mind at all. I love "old things” such as music and things with a vintage style. We live on a cattle ranch here in Ellis County and also love "all things cows, chickens and dogs." When you sit in my chair, you will hear funny things about our farm. My husband, Garrett, who has lived and grown up in Ellis county his whole life, brought me up here just five short years ago. I stayed home with my two Littles the first few years of being here. Although I cherished the time spent loving and nurturing their little minds, momma was going stir crazy! It was in those years when I was immersed in motherhood that The Boho Blonde was born.
I've had the dream of owning my own salon and being a business owner ever since I could remember. My life has been quite the journey. It hasn't been perfect, but looking back now, I wouldn't change a thing! I went into the beauty industry right out of high school and graduated from Paul Mitchell Austin in 2014. After working in it for a few years, I found myself both frustrated and uninspired. I was confused as it seemed I had let others tell me what I "needed" to do instead of following my own heart and my dream. I was working at a blow out bar in Austin, TX, when I decided to go back to school to be a teacher. I thought I would make the “responsible, smart choice" to get my degree and a job in education with benefits. I enrolled at Texas State University with the mindset that I was going to become a Kindergarten teacher. Not too long after that, I happened to meet this old cowboy (my husband Garrett) and fell in love. A couple of months later we found out that we were going to be welcoming a baby girl into our lives. I was three semesters from graduation when God pulled Garrett and I in a different direction. He was offered a job working on his family's cattle ranch in Waxahachie. We did what we thought was best for our little family. He took the job, I left Texas State, and we packed up our lives! Moving to Waxahachie was intimidating to say the least. Our oldest daughter Finlee had just been born, but we knew this was the best idea to help our little family succeed.

STARTING OVER It certainly wasn't easy and I had a hard time adjusting to the "new normal." Starting over is difficult and change is scary, but it was actually one of the easiest decisions I have ever made! Fear had held me back a lot throughout the years, but making the choice to move away from everything I had ever known set me up to conquer those fears. I had a choice. I could either sit at home and be scared to go after my dreams and constantly wonder "what if"...or I could get up and just put myself out there and show my daughter what a little faith, hard work and determination looked like. I knew that being in a salon and getting my hands back into some hair was exactly what I needed! I started slowly building my clientele at Eye Candy Salon in Midlothian, and with the encouragement of my mentor/boss Jeannie Benner, I gained confidence. She helped me not only perfect my craft, but also helped me to in believe in myself. Fast forward a year and a half later, I found out I was going to be welcoming another little girl into our little family! I continued to work behind the chair until I had her. While on maternity leave, I had this pull that I really just needed to focus on my babies and raising them. It only took about six months of being at home that I was going stir crazy again. I wanted to be back behind the chair, but this time I wanted to be able to schedule my own hours. A couple of months later, God planted this seed that is now "The Boho Blonde."
Braiding, branding, & the boho blonde Starting a business in a place where you don't know a whole lot of people definitely has its challenges. I had to get creative with marketing. I started setting up braid bars with tinsel and hair feathers. My first event was at the Ellis County Fair & Rodeo. I was blown away with the response to the braid bar and continued to do pop up events across the county. I have grown so much over the past year and I credit that to the people of Ellis County! Y’all have all welcomed me with open arms and allowed me to live out my dreams...and for that I will be forever grateful! A year after I started my business, I was able to open my first brick and mortar salon. When you walk in, I hope that you get the feeling of "home." I strive to make sure every single one of my clients feels relaxed and taken care of. It is so much more than hair at The Boho Blonde. It’s an experience! Come on in, grab a drink, sit back and let me take care of you. Need a laugh? I got you. Need a cry? Let's cry together. Need some silence? I'm pretty good at that too! Whatever it may be...I am here not only for your hair, but for you as well! I specialize in blondes/lived-in color, bridal hair, make-up, and spray tans. We are located in Forreston,TX...just 10 minutes south of Waxahachie in the old bank building. My hope is that you will stop by, come on in...and stay while!

ABOUT the MAKER: KYLE KEEVER I am deeply rooted as a Texan, 5th Generation Ellis County and 3rd Generation Born in Ennis. While playing college baseball at McMurry University in Abilene, Texas, I was introduced to the western art of leatherwork and began to fall in love with the tradition, lifestyle, and the trade. I am very blessed to have had many friends and family support my work at the early stages of my then hobby-turned-business. Like most leatherworkers, my passion for the art is derived from a love for the American West. I strive to keep a dying tradition alive by producing fine custom leather products for clients who appreciate owning something custom. Every order has challenged my creative side, skill and work ethic into completing a quality leather product. After steadily fulfilling one order after another, I can now step back and appreciate where I am today. A plethora of handcrafted quality leather products are continually being shipped all over the nation. Being in the leatherwork business builds a certain pride within that cannot be easily expressed. In a world where computers seem to be replacing some of the workforce, intricate custom leatherwork requires skilled hands using the swivel knife and tools and cannot easily be replaced. It is an honor for me to listen to someone’s creative thoughts and ideas about a leather item, and then be able to successfully design and construct their dream. Owning a handcrafted piece of art, so personal and unique and made out of leather specifically for them, can become a reality. Through hard work, some failure, and a lot of determination, I have developed a name for myself. Here at FireWater Custom Leather, I am thrilled to embark on the adventures ahead...where only God knows what is next!

The Bootstitch
•2 parts TX Whiskey •1 part Grapefruit Juice •0.5 part Lime Juice •0.5 part Agave Nectar •1 Jalapeño Slice •1 Rosemary Sprig – for garnish
INSTRUCTIONS Muddle jalapeño in agave nectar and lime juice. Add TX Whiskey and grapefruit juice and shake. Fine strain over ice into a fresh glass.
PERFECT FOR This is a TX favorite! This cocktail is the perfect balance of spice, citrus, and Texas. We like to add a Texan touch by torching the rosemary sprig before garnishing the cocktail so that it is smoking to enhance the flavors even more. While you may not catch me in a cowboy hat (unless it’s the Dallas Cowboys), you might catch me throwing down on a tomahawk. A tomahawk is a ribeye steak with the bone left intact, making it look like a tomahawk axe AKA battle axe. Technically, a tomahawk steak is a bone-in ribeye or “cowboy steak” with at least 5 inches of bone exposed. Tomahawks have become increasingly more popular over recent years and what I would call a social media worthy piece of meat…”Instagrammable” if you will. One of my favorite ways to grill a tomahawk is reversed caveman sear. A caveman sear happens when you place the steak directly on a white-hot coal bed. This technique got its name from way back when there was nothing but an open fire to work with. A larger cut of meat will need to be reverse seared, meaning cooking with the use of indirect heat first followed by the direct heat of the glowing embers. Just think of it as the five second rule or a little dirt won’t hurt. Pro tip, fan the coal bed prior to placing your meat on it to knock off the loose ash. Although the caveman sear will not take long, about 60 seconds on each side, there is always time to whip up a cowboy-inspired cocktail with our favorite TX Whiskey. Make your own Ranch Water or give The Bootstitch or Yippie-Ki-Yay a try! After all... CRAVING MORE? @MEAT.THERAPY

•2 parts TX Whiskey •0.5 part Lime Juice •0.5 part Agave Nectar •Meat Church Seasoning - for rim, I prefer The Gospel
INSTRUCTIONS Combine all ingredients over ice and shake. Rim fresh glass with Meat Church seasoning and fill with fresh ice. Strain ingredients into new glass and enjoy.

Clint Eastwood emulated this often in his western movies. That’s really the premise of our name, Fire Awakes Tobacco. It’s no secret that we’re overmarketed by lavish designs and catchy social media marketing, making it extremely difficult to know whether you’re purchasing an amazing cigar stick or something you will regret. Decades ago, you could categorize most premium cigars into Good, Better, or Best. But the blurred lines of mass production and false marketing in the cigar industry has left many of us cigar aficionados categorizing them more as...
The Good, The Bad, and The...Hmmmm... In the same way the role of taste and smell in the flavor of food trigger memories, a great cigar can open a memory file of a peaceful fall night sitting on the porch while watching lightning bugs dance among the pecan trees. Imagine in the era of expansive memory loss if we could conjure up recalling these memories by smoking a certain profiled cigar. One of the reasons I started a cigar rolling class here in Waxahachie was to allow individuals to create their own flavor profiles to not only taste different flavors, but also to develop their own unique profile that could be reserved for unique moments in life. The flavors are far more advanced than if you’re thinking of low-end java, rum, or cherry flavored cigars. We’re talking about Sumatra, Cameroon, Rosado, Criollo, and more! The art of building a cigar is very complex. Outside of desired flavor profiles are the choosing of certain tobacco leaves that lend themselves to controlling the speed of the cigar burn all the way to the amount of nicotine you desire to consume. Bourbon is almost always a go-to when smoking a cigar, but one of the latest trends to enhance tobacco flavor profiles is smoking a cigar while drinking coffee. The pairing of an amazing cortado or latte while smoking a Camacho Criollo Robusto is exquisite! Criollo tobacco leaves that come from Honduras are generally creamy and quite smoothly sweet compared to the Rosado tobacco leaf that will leave your taste buds with spice and cedar. Before you go and tune me out and say "I never taste flavors and they’re just making these up," I want to urge you to consider two things. First, the art in which you smoke a cigar matters by the type of fire you light it with, the speed at which you puff it, or even the way that you remove the ash. All of these can affect flavor outcomes. Secondly, the reason I tagged a fellow aficionado from our local cigar lounge to expound upon this is...maybe what you thought was a premium cigar, might in fact be a non-premium. The Premium Cigar industry weaves throughout our history as a country, and there is much to learn as you experience cigars today. I highly recommend that you find a local shop with an experienced tobacconist who can help you navigate towards the blends and flavors that you enjoy.The journey is not the same for all, but find a good drink-pairing and great people to “slow-down” with and enjoy a nice cigar. – The Captain @ Latitude Cigars LLC

THE DROVERS and the rich history of the stockyards helped put the city of
Fort Worth on the map. Drovers created a legacy and were an integral part of the old West as the experienced cowboy riders who herded cattle from one place to another. Hard-working, persevering and fiercely independent, they relentlessly moved livestock to market. Fort Worth served as their resting spot and watering hole. Similarly, the Hotel Drover is an anchor at the Fort Worth Stockyards National District and a modern day urban oasis. The exclusive furnishings are conversation pieces you'd imagine finding in a guest suite at a cattle baron's ranch. You'll enjoy the finest amenities including a locally-curated minibar, a custom boot jack, brass steer coat hooks, and King Ranch leather goods. You can actually "shop the room." Look at the price list and see if some of your favorite signature small items are on it. The bathrooms are roomy and luxurious. Love the framed art, custom Hotel Drover branded lighting, the black, gold, terra cotta and white tile; the bronze soaking tub, the ornate brass hardware, oversized shower, super soft robes, and the Los Poblanos artisan lavender products. The heavy barn door pull that leads to the bathroom is wrapped in leather. Every detail speaks western luxury!
W97 WEST KITCHEN & BAR Enjoy the bold flavors of Texas at Hotel Drover's signature restaurant. No matter where your eyes rest, there are interesting design elements at 97 West Kitchen & Bar. Handcrafted light fixtures, western art, repurposed wood floors, luxe furnishings, servers crisply dressed in marble snap shirts and custom aprons, creative food presentation, and every signature detail including the etched glassware and the branded burger buns. I highly recommend the deviled eggs and the filet. Reserve the Chef's table to watch everyone in action in the bustling open-air kitchen. Saturday Brunch on the veranda overlooking the Backyard was amazing. Sunlight danced on the water in the fountain as a backdrop to the shareable Taco Board and Sweet & Spicy Bacon. Crispy house-smoked pork belly clipped and served clothes-line style arrived drizzling with maple syrup over the best jalapeño cornbread ever. It took every ounce of my Keto-cowgirl discipline to pass on the giant cast iron cinnamon roll. Y'all...the food is incredible. Even if you don't stay overnight at Hotel Drover, make plans to enjoy a meal at 97 West Kitchen & Bar.
THE BACKYARD All of the expansive areas outside of the hotel are just as beautiful and thoughtfully designed as the interior. Large gas lanterns light the gate entries at the heated ranch pool. There are custom chaise lounges and three private cabanas with hanging daybeds and crystal chandeliers. There is a lovely outdoor bar and restaurant seating areas. A "Backyard" sign arches over the gate and walkway down to Marine Creek; casual seating lines the edge of the expansive outdoor area. A fountain is the centerpiece among the lush landscaping of large agave, saguaro cacti, flowers, trees and so many beautiful pots and containers meticulously planted. Cowgirl murals provide photo ops, string lights add sparkle, s'mores kits are available for the fire pits and Adirondack chairs shaded by large umbrellas promote conversation. There are outdoor yard games and a live music stage. My favorite vignette was the elegant horse trailer bar surrounded by container gardens with a glorious sunset as the backdrop. THE MARK SIGNATURE EXPERIENCE No two Autograph Collection Hotels are the same and they each have their own unique story to tell. Their vision is to make their mark and leave a lasting imprint to enjoy long after your stay. At Hotel Drover, you are invited to head to the Backyard near the horse trailer where an authentic branding station is set up. Using the same process as drovers did to mark their livestock, you will enjoy the opportunity to brand your own one-of-akind leather luggage tag. SPECIAL EVENT SPACES You'll find plenty of event
space rentals with western character throughout the Stockyards, but first consider the possibilities at Hotel Drover. There are five beautiful venues to choose from to accommodate your special event or corporate gathering: The Barn, Legacy Hall, The Drover Boardroom, the Vaquero Room, or the Ranchero Room. I was able to peek into The Barn as a wedding was being set up. Love the "tough and tender" ambiance of reclaimed wood, heavy barn doors, high-vaulted ceilings, a neon cowgirl perched in a horseshoe at the built-in bar...and sparkling Italian crystal chandeliers!
RETAIL INSIDE HOTEL DROVER There are two
unique shopping experiences: Lucchese Custom Collection and Wide Brim. Lucchese has carried fine handcrafted boots since 1883. They also offer impeccable clothing and accessories. If you are in the market for a quality custom pair of boots, this is the place! Wide Brim is Flea Style's latest boutique concept with a trendy selection of super-cute hats, tees, gifts, clothing, and accessories.
BEYOND HOTEL DROVER There is so much to take
in at Hotel Drover that you could spend days just enjoying your room and all of the curated areas on the property. However, there are 98 acres to explore in the Stockyards. Approximately 46 restaurants and bars, about 54 shops and over 20 must-see attractions are all within walking distance. My visit included a filling breakfast at The Biscuit Bar, a savory lunch at Tim Love's Paloma Suerte, and a flavorsome dinner at Provender Hall. Don't be late to the cattle drives...secure a curbside spot so you can take great photos of the Texas Longhorns and the drovers. The John Wayne Experience is fun and informative and the guided Stockyard tour is a must. Friday night's rodeo was exciting and strolling afterwards under the big Harvest Moon, I was able to catch some great outdoor live music. I know it will persevere because it is what we all lean on and lean into. So, I leave you with a few excerpts from this well-known prayer and I wish you well!

CODE OF THE WEST The Western lifestyle has persevered and survived over the centuries and it’s no wonder. It’s starting out the day knowing there are challenges to overcome. It’s living an authentic life and going into each day with courage, taking pride in your work, and being thankful for what the good Lord has Provided. It’s believing that handshakes are still a person’s bond, trusting that people are as good as their word, and it’s about looking people in the eye. It’s a “can-do” spirit filled with strength of character, humbleness, chivalry, and heart.

Just a typical junior high girl, dreaming of new and exciting high school adventures, I decided I wanted to get involved in FFA. As a family, we discussed starting with a small animal project, but my grandmother chimed in, “I have a Registered Texas Longhorn she could show”...and that's how it all began! With much reservation, we went to a Longhorn show to just observe. We were blown away by the friendly people and supportive atmosphere, and to top it off they even held church in the stands before the show got started. We were sold! My dad literally built our dream from the ground up. Starting with barns, pens, fences, trucks, and trailers, we acquired all we needed to bring my first show cows home. My dream had become our new family adventure. We were all in! Within my short five years of showing livestock, I have grown in countless ways, shaping me into the person I am today. I have trained twelve Longhorns, two market steers and two pigs. As I train each animal, I have learned patience over frustration as I gain their trust. I have learned work-ethic, which means to work hard while always doing the right thing, even when no one is looking. I have learned to lose gracefully and win humbly. I compete fiercely in the ring, and treat my competitors kindly outside of the ring. I used to define success as buckles and banners...I even made it to be the FFA President! Despite these accomplishments, I have come to realize my highest achievement is loving people and being an image-bearer for God. One of my greatest accomplishments has been mentoring a 9 year old girl. What a joy it is to love her and guide her in and out of the ring! I thought I had it all figured out by my senior year, but the hard reality of raising livestock brought me to my knees as I anxiously awaited the birth of a newborn show calf. My excitement quickly changed to sadness when my prized mama cow passed away after giving birth. I now have a healthy baby calf I bottle feed several times a day. He has even made an appearance at my FFA class to help students learn about raising livestock. In life, some sad things may happen, but I have learned you can always find the good in any circumstance. The day after losing my cow, I was blessed to pick up my senior sale heifer, named Bundt Cake.

The final show of my senior year will have an amazing ending. At this show, The Texas Longhorn Breeders Association puts on a "Senior Sale." This is an amazing opportunity for each senior to purchase a heifer at the beginning of the show season to show, promote and advertise with the goal of selling their heifer to make money towards their future goals after graduation. Your work is being showcased in so many places and you seem to be one of Texas' most recognizable and favorite artists. What do you love most about Texas and why is it so special to you?
A: I love Texas because it is so big and so diverse
geographically that it would take many lifetimes to capture it all on canvas. I specifically love far west Texas, Big Bend - the cactus, yucca, agave, ocotillo, mountains, and desert have been the subjects of many of my paintings. The Modern Cowboy Series has re-imagined the "spirit of the West" genre for your collectors. Your unmistakable style seems to unfold a journey of fine art skills which span from modern, contemporary and cubism to a form of raw, primitive and folk art...all stemming from a deeply rooted graphic design background. What is your definition of "the spirit of the West" and what does it evoke in you as an artist? How does it combine with your style and play out in your work?
A: My work is mostly large. I try to create pieces that are heroic and bigger than life. The spirit of the west is heroic and bigger than life. It is gritty, bold and confident, but it, also knows when to ask for help and it values family/community. My art does draw on many influences -- it is a mixed bag of styles collected over many years that has brought me to something new and original in the world of western art. Your studio is a visual overload! Tell us a little bit about it. Describe your inspirational surroundings and vignettes... your mediums...favorite color palettes and tools, etc?
A: My studio is full of pieces that I have collected over many years - navajo rugs, saddles, chaps, tumbleweeds, cow skulls, old flags, old photos and signs, and lots of paintings. I am influenced by things that I see, not by things tucked away in a drawer. Earth colors, textures, typography, all these things surround me in my workspace and influence my art. My favorite color palette is very earthy -- like someone took one of my paintings and left it on a dusty Texas backroad for a month. I create a "painting" with texture before ever putting paint on canvas. Once I start laying down color, the texture creates a depth to my work which is mostly flat in nature. Your faith is foundational, but also relational. I've heard you say that James 1:19-20 has been a reminder to "be quick to listen, be slow to speak, and slow to become angry." It seems to have made you an approachable artist with meaningful friendships...not because you necessarily agree on everything, but because you are determined to listen well and try to understand where others are coming from. Painted as an expression of your own faith, what is the spiritual reference to the symbolic Rancher depicted in your piece, "Savior?"
A: I love those verses. Sometimes I'm good at it and other times I fail, but having that scripture memorized is a constant reminder of how I need to love other people. "Savior" is a favorite piece because it reminds me of my dependence on a loving God who saves me from trouble and from myself every day. It is a visual reminder of Jesus leaving the 99 to go after the one. Like the lost sheep or the prodigal son, I am prone to wander far from the God I love. But when I do, God is always forgiving, merciful and gracious and welcomes me with open arms.
Your work has been influenced by collected stories and photos of those with determination, an aura of a certain toughness and independence, and yet a standard of integrity. Cowboys and cowgirls...gritty, strong, and deeply entrenched in the West. As one example, your online John Wayne "Gritcast" clip shares a glimpse of how his character has impacted your artistic backstory. You captured his "bigger than life" expression! Tell us how the piece came to be and what "grit" means to you.
A: My wife and I got to know the John Wayne family about 10 years ago. They are wonderful people and are carrying on John Wayne's legacy in many ways. One way is the John Wayne Cancer Foundation. In 2015 they asked me to create the identity for the John Wayne Film Festival that took place in Dallas. I also created 3 portraits of John Wayne that were auctioned off to raise money for the foundation. The largest portrait was sold to a friend in London and hangs in his flat there. Grit for me is a dogged determination to stay the course -- the courage and persistence to do the right thing when its very difficult. Would you like to share where some of your spectacular pieces now call "home" and also a few of the galleries where your work is shown?
A: My work is in many private and corporate collections. It is also in the Museum of the Southwest in Midland, the San Angelo Museum of Art, The Tyler Museum of Art, and the Grace Museum of Art in Abilene, Texas. I've shown my work in numerous galleries including David Dike Fine Art, Sarah Foltz Fine Art, Artspace 111, The Gage Hotel in Marathon, Texas.

The biggest little fall festival event in Texas, Ennis Autumn Daze, is three incredible days of family fun! Friday, October 27th will kick off 21 years of the celebration with entertainment for the whole family, free kids activities and a gorgeous pumpkin display sure to make it a memorable experience for all! The giant Hay Maze and Pumpkin Patch (featuring over 15k pumpkins) will continue to be a main attraction. The Shed will be open 7 days a week for snacks and beverages. Pumpkins will be for sale this year so you can take home a little piece of the patch! The maze and pumpkin patch will be free and open to the public from October 1st through October 31st with the exception of October 27th through the 29th when it is within festival grounds.

Kids will have a blast in the free kids craft area where they can get creative and use their imagination. They can also enjoy fun sensory play in the giant corn pit! Talley Amusements, the carnival provider for the State Fair of Texas and Ft. Worth Stock Show, will be bringing in carnival rides appealing to both thrill seekers and small children. The event will also feature a cornhole tournament with a $1,000 cash prize, beer garden, food, and unique shopping vendors. This event is truly a family experience with fun for all ages!

You can most certainly navigate the stockyards with their detailed map, but I took a delightful tour with one of the entertaining and informative guides, Ed Brown. Even after a descriptive tour, warm conversation, and about twenty pages of notes later, this dimestore cowgirl was filled with a burning curiosity to discover more about the historic stockyards, the cowboy culture, Texas Longhorns,the history and the mysteries, the outlaws and the in-laws, and other fascinating details. Ed is a self-proclaimed "re-enactor, Texas historian, stockyards ambassador, and an ordained minister." Now you know who to call if you want to get hitched cowboy-style!

Mule Alley
Refurbished 100-year-old historic horse and mule barns recently added about 200,000 sq feet of creatively designed restaurants with the most fabulous food, lively watering holes, indoor music venues, outdoor stages, beautiful stores brimming with western merchandise and beyond, dazzling neon lights and signage, rustic planters filled with cactus and seasonal flowers, carriage rides, and both fun and fine art...including the majestic bronze horse sculpture, "Legacy of Color," which commemorated the historic 40th Anniversary of the American Paint Horse Association.
John Wayne: An American Experience
This is a must-see if you are a fan of John Wayne or love movie nostalgia. Housed in a soon-to-expand 10,000 sq ft museum, it is a detailed exhibit of the Duke's personal life since childhood and highlights his entire career. There are costumes, movie props, photo displays and a lifetime of collected items which play into his larger-than-life legacy. Snoring... IS IT A Serious Health Problem?
I had the opportunity to see a family as patients this week that are new to the area. Before I even sat down to examine their 10-year-old son, the mom stated, “My son snores! His dad thinks that it’s cute. Should I be concerned?” The short answer is “yes." Snoring can be a sign of apnea or lack of breathing during sleep. Apnea is measured with a sleep test. Adults are classified as normal if their measure of apneas per hour is less than 5. For children, even 1 apnea per hour is considered bad because it can affect growth and development. Snoring can keep a child from entering into deep sleep where growth hormone is released. Sometimes children may be smaller than normal and are labelled as “failure to thrive." Enlarged tonsils and adenoids are often the cause of snoring as well as a narrow roof of the mouth (palate). The roof of the mouth is also the floor of the nose. When the palate is narrow, it will have a high arch, which restricts the inside of the nose. I think of the airway as a garden hose. Anything that restricts air movement is like pinching the water hose. Treatment for snoring in children can include tonsillectomy/adenoidectomy as well as palatal expansion. Both treatments are aimed at increasing the size of the airway or “enlarging the garden hose” to allow better breathing.

You might think it is not a good time to visit Maui after the fires that devastated the culturally significant community of Lahaina, but Maui needs tourism more than ever. I started traveling to Maui with my parents 45 years ago when it was incredibly remote. Lahaina was a beautiful old whaling port and a National Historic Landmark with rich history. There were no direct flights and aside from whale watching, the most happening thing in Lahaina was an ice cream shop. Over the years Lahaina’s Front Street became a favorite area with scores of shops, restaurants, and art galleries. Sadly, it is now gone and wiped out by a fire on August 8th of this year with close to 100 lives lost and over 2,000 homes destroyed, not to mention all the businesses and historical landmarks in Lahaina.

Once you have arrived at the resort the bungalows look out onto the magnificent Hana Bay, and you are treated to five-star luxury.Waianapanapa State Park is just a 10-minute drive where you can experience the park’s famed black sand beach. Whether you are situated at the base of a dormant volcano between the breathtaking hillsides andspectacular ocean, watching the sunrise above the clouds at Haleakala Mountain or hiking through a rain forest, consider Maui for your next vacation and go with patience, compassion, and
